2010-05-07 Thread Kenneth Oliver

I was raised in the U.P. of Mich. and was living in northern Mich in 1981
when

got TM. at age 55. Thirty years ago many believed that living in the north was
a

 contributing factor for TM.

After the awful news Janet Dunn has given us, I am wondering if where we live

you don't mind my asking you to do this, but I think it would be very

According to my booklet from the Reed foundation, it is well within
the realm of possibility.
It seems to depend on the level and type/span of your injury.
You should contact the Reed foundation and get that booklet-- it was
incredibly helpful
to me while i was in the nursing home being mistreated. And I shared
it with the other
oppressed prisoners-- a couple of guys who told me it was VERY helpful.

Janice - I am and was living in S.E. Wisconsin when I got TM. I have heard
that our northern states i.e., Wisconsin, Minnesota, etc. have more cases of TM
& MS. They believe it may be due to the long winters and lack of Vitamin D
during our long and dark winters. I have been taking 2,000 IU 3 times a day.
It is worth a try.

I don't think that where we lived when TM struck is the only underlying factor.

I was watching CNN and the doctor, Dr. Grupa?, said that they have studied the
cord blood of newborns and they have found that the cord blood contained over
200 chemicals, not body chemials but harmful chemicals - "contaminated
newborns" is what they called the newborns.

The Dr. also said that there are thousands of chemicals that are in our food,
air, clothing, cleaning supplies, etc. that have NOT been studied to make sure
that they are not harmful. A Congressman has submitted a bill that will not
allow any chemical to be used until the chemical is proven not harmful - as it
stands now, a chemical is put into use and used until it is proven to be
harmful! So we are all guinea pigs for the industries.

For myself I believe that I had the "bad genes" for my auoimmune sstem but also
just 75 days before TM struc me, I had a "botched" surgery then a follow-up
"successful" surgery 30 days later. In between the surgeries, I had an
allergy reaction to the meds that they gave me. After the "successful" sugery,
I went back to work early - due to deadlines which resulted in stress! Added
to that were the holidays stress - Thanksgiving and Christmas. I think
another factor was that the hospital where I had the "botched" & "successful"
surgery was

2009-08-13 Thread Kenneth Oliver
Those of you who have questions about the banding of Tm.. I was in the hospital
for nine weeks during this
time The band around my belly felt like a band of steel holding me down. At
the same my belly went fro 36 to 55
inches even though I lost 30 lbs. It was 1981 that got this, for several years
I had a band of pain that got worse
if I tried to lay on my back. At times my waist could swell up in a matter of
minutes, this was always when
I had a nervous reaction. The constant pain lasted for ten years plus. Even
now after 29 yrs I still have it once in awhile, and my belly swells up at the
same time. Many times it may only take an hour after some nervous
reaction, I have never been able to get any medical relief..

I got my blured vision in the time the first signs were there month for TM.
Only I did not know what was happening to me. Around a few month before. Meds
did not make the difference. It got worse after the TM. I only take Baclofen,
no pain meds. The most logical explenation for the eye-site problem was the
age, around 43. But just a year before my eyes were checked by the medical
serveces of my company.

This discussion has come by every few years, look into the archives and you
will see, that what we has found out. Blured vion is TM related, and medication
has very little to do with that. Some meds will make a little difference, the
mail course is TM. Also the age. Most of us are in the 40's or older. Yes guys,
you are getting old. So it is a difficult discussion with the doctors, they
simply keep it on the age, while we know, compairing this problem with
eachother that it is also TM related.

I have had tm since 1981. In the hospital itt felt like a steel band

Tm

completely changed both my life, but also my wife who was my care given for

27yrs, we became very close in spite of lack of intermmacy. I could not bear

was

so concerned for me that she requested my son to take me home, she was dying

and did not want me to see her.

Both hot and cold bother me, my feet feel like they in hot water even in hot

[TMIC] RE: tmic-digest Digest V2009 #475

2009-05-30 Thread Kenneth Oliver

Jude,

It is nearly 29 yrs since tm. There are still new things happening, some where
we

will have many of the same pains repeating themselves. A doctor told me years

ago that I would have good days and bad and be thankful for good. That is how
it has been for me. He also said what ever I had at two years would be what I

would live with. That has been pretty much it has been for.

May God's mercy and care be with you all.

Ken

Dearest Mindy,

It has only been two years for you. That is not a long time and even though
you may feel that you are emotionally healed and have accepted your life the
way it is now, I doubt that you have. You would be exceptional if you were
that stable. I'm not saying that you are not stable, but from experience, I
know how big the losses are with TM and they sneak up on you years after you
think you are finished with them.

I would like others to comment on this one. It's very important and I am
interested in what you have to say.

Even with blessings from your doctor, Mindy, I would be very careful and think
this through thoroughly. I love you so much and only want you to be safe,
healthy and happy.

Love and Prayers,
Jude

Dear friends.
I am continuing to feel better. Now that I look back I can see that I have
been Improving for about a month even though I'm passed the 2 year mark. The
hope it has given me above and beyond the general "coming to terms" and
"acceptance" that one should reach by their 2 year mark, has made me decide
that I am ready to get off my antidepressant. I have read that Cymbalta is
very difficult to come off of and that other people have had good results
opening the capsules and reducing the dose incrementally themselves every few
days. I just spoke with my doctor and have her blessing in this endeavor as
she has had other patients wean off successfully doing this.

Cymbalta saved my life and helped with the nerve pain in ways that other
antidepressants do not but I am ready to face the world again. Will keep you
all informed of my progress!

Oh the joys of TM - yes I also have the same problem - our internal thermostats
are also affected. Once you go either direction, hot or cold, it seems like
forever before it evens out. I don't know how many times I've woke up sweating
like a race horse and then the next minute I'm freezing and it takes forever to
get back to sleep. I know it's not menopause because that happened many a year
ago and quit long before TM.

My legs burn like they have 2nd degree sunburn while my feet feel as if they
are in an ice bucket! The burning, itchy, stingy occurs all over the body for
whatever reason. It seems as if everyday its the same but different in
different ways.

And never regret anything that made you smile.

I don't know about anyone else but I have had problems with over heating since
TM hit. Seems like I am constantly putting on and taking off clothes. Don't
remember the last time I was able to crawl into bed and snuggle down under the

  Hello Ken,
Thanks for your prayers and thoughts, ours are
with all the victims of this disaster. It will take a long time for those folk
to recover, some will return others won’t as the pain will be just too much.
This I can understand. But we do have to move on, and I feel we all will
after a period of mourning and reflecting on the unfortunate events. We may
travel down there again a little later this year, if I could be of active
support, we would be on the way down now, however in our position that is not
viable.
I know Mavis’s cousin and her husband are just
devistated as Nicole was an only child, as was her husband, both Mavis’s cousin
and her husband are also only children. So fortunately, Mavis’s larger family
are of good support.
Yes, Ken, society has gone into too much evil and
“I’m all right” and forget the rest, however this disaster has brought our
country togather.Again there is too much evil and take and not enough give
in this world today, nowdays young ones don’t want to start with a modest home,
they must have th best castle and all trimmings and new cars and the like, and
a few months later, it is all on the market again and families breaking up.
Not enough of us take time to pray for guidance, and reflect on what our
forebears did for us. Too many TV shows are crime and more crime, they don’t
rate in our house.
Any way Ken, good to hear from you, you look after
yourself now. I often wonder how you are going over there.
Take care and God Bless.
Kindest Regards from Errol, South East Queensland, Australia……

Sorry to tell you but Janet will not be coming home. Her whole

worn out, at 81 she has lived a good life and we have had a happy 62

Yesterday was not a good one, Janet had run a temperature of 104 early
inthe morning Friday, yesterday heart was kept going only by her pacemaker.
They tried to lower the breathing tube, but she could not breathe for
herself. All bodily function were shutting down. She is very very sick with
pneumonia also compounding her condition. A phone call this morning
told of her oxegen level was up and the kidney funcitions were improved.
Bruce went early to talk to the doctor, he is not back so i don't know the
news for now. He insisted I stay home as I did sleep after two am. . As
soon as I know more I will post. Thank you for all your well wishes and
especially your prayers. I believe this will be God's will, so I have
commited her to Gods care and He does not make mistakes. Thanks again
and over look the spelling, I can not remember how to spell. Ken

Update on Janet. I am sorry to not have sent an address. Yesterday it was
not good news, she
cannot breath alone so the so still has breathing tube, and heart is working
only
the pacemaker. She is kept in a sedated sleep to promote healing of lungs and
heart. The last word I had this morning was that oxegen level was up and the
kidneys were doing better. I wish I had a more positive report.

She is in an icu , and she is not awake enough to read cards or appreciate
flowers.

Dear Friends, Thank all of you who sent
e-mail with prayers for Janet. Tonight I believe that our prayers
are being answered in a way that gives all joy. All week since Tue.
she was kept asleep to rest heart and lungs. This morning about 4am she
began to have tempeture I had a call from the nurse telling that
she had 104 temp.. When Bruce and I reached the hospital we were
pleasantly surprised to find her awake and responding with the
tempeture normal. If this continues as is they will remove the
breathing tube. She was breathing on her own today, Hopefully she
will continue to improve so they can put stents in Monday if that
is successful she will make a good recovery. I feel quite
optomistic tonight. Your prayers and words of comfort have meant
a lot to us. God be praised for all His wonderful love to us poor
sinners who saved by His Grace. May God draw very near to each of
you. My Thought for Today will be continued next week. Until
then I pray each of will blessed by our wonderful Friend and

for research. Maybe we ought to make ourselves available to them.

But, funny thing bout June 1. It was my mom's birthday, I got engaged on June

Not fair really since I had done almost all the planning. I could have done

  Hello Steven,
Welcome to our world such as it is. Tm never lets go as far as I am
concerned, I went into the
hospital Jan.31, 1981. So I have lived with this for 27 yrs. I am now
coming up to my 83 rd
birthday and it seems that with each year it gets a little worse. I have
had bladder & bowel problem
all these years and until two months ago the burning stinging pain, & low
back and other pain to
numerous to mention. The first year I regained most my mobility for
walking even with a cane.
I was in Northern Mich. that winter it snowed about 100 inches and I went
back to crutches needed
help with support for walking. I have been in a power chair since 2000.
I hope you can keep
  what you have.
My lesion was at C7 and I do not feel normal pain from my chest down, but
oh the nerve pain,
thankfully it has let up about 90% in the last two months.
Keep fighting to maintain the mobility you have, and whatever else you
know that seems to get better
this takes a lot of stick to it attitude and being thankful for any
positive changes.

Hi Bernie
I am C7 and have normal feelings from just above the upper shoulder blade, but the burning stinging pain is from there down, with my feet and lower legs are nearly always burning like being in hot water. My left arm and right side from the waist down is where the most pain is.  I only take anacin when I get a headache, I have not had anything take away the pain for all these years.

My ankles swell also (I am a C4, left side affected - arm & leg) - I get around slowly with a walker. My PT told me it's from spinal cord. I wear compression socks & take Triamterine, which help, but still swell.

Hi Barbara,  thanks for the reply, we have some of the same results of tm.  My left hand and right leg are the most affected. My right leg has always been undependable.  The last five years both hips and knees have let me down quite often.
I guess I can't complain too much, I'll be 82 April first.  Just hope I can hang in there for awhile longer.

Rick welcome back, I am sorry to hear of your hospital stay, and I hope they found the help you need.  TM is bad enough, and any of these other ailments are some times hard to understand.  You are in my prayers.

Its Rick back on the line. I hope all of you are doing well. I've had a few setbacks but all and all I'm in fairly good shape. Just last week I was in the hospital after having a seizure at home and another in the emergency room, quite scary. Any I just wanted to post a line to you all and see if I can still remember how to operate my new computer. I've really been missing all the great people at Tmic. Glad to be back. Rick

Re: [TMIC] Pain vs No pain

2007-03-12 Thread Kenneth Oliver

Hi Kevin,
I have had TM since 1981 and in that time I haven't had a dozen days without pain.  Sometimes days it gets hard to bear, but I gave up the so called pain relievers, all I take now is a couple of anacin for headaches. My pain is from the waist, where I still have banding , to my feet.  All these years I have felt like my feet were in a pan of hot water, yet I have had a toe nail removed with no pain from that.  I attribute all of my pain to nerves redirecting the signals. I'm a C7 , limited to a power chair.
I have question, have you or anyone else on the list, had any trouble with feet and legs swelling?  If so have you found any help for this.

[TMIC] RE. Handlying TM

2007-03-06 Thread Kenneth Oliver

Hi Larry,
Nice to hear from you.  How long have you had TM?  Any time at all seems too long.  This past year my wife fell and hurt her shoulder and had surgery four months after the fall she was having theapy before and after surgery.  It gets a bit of problem some times to be both patient and care giver.  We had a lot coming and going with nursing,  pt, and home help.

I'm glad you have a handle on the pain.  I am thankful that I don't have the constant pain that I had for so many years.  Now with spring here if I get hurting too much I wheel my self out to the yard and do everything from lawn mowing and gardening from power chair.  The sunshine and fresh air helps relieve the pain.

Where do you live in Oklahoma.  We lived in Bristow for four years, and liked it very much except for being in tornado ally.

Some have been talking about pain clinics,  I tried one and all he was concerned about was treating mood swings.  One month it was buspar and the next paxil, I got disgusted and dumped them down the toilet.

Keep looking up there are a lot of sunny days ahead.

Kevin, Larry & others,
I have been reading your comments about pain.  I am in my 27th year with TM and will turn 82 in another month.  I have had intense pain for a lot of years until a year ago when I was haveing a lot pain while taking so called pain killers,  I decided to see what would happen I quit taking these.  I found that I really did not have as much pain when I got off everything but anacin.  I now take it when I get a headache, otherwise I lay down till the pain lessens.  I have lost a lot of mobilty the last five years and use a power chair as I can not stand but a few minutes. I guess some of this can be counted for old age.
I have had bad experiences with pain clinics, one all he wanted to treat was his idea of what he wanted and that was anxity.  Another put me on neaurontin and 2800 mgs.  I ended up with losing a whole summer of memory loss and people thought I had had a stroke.  It did not help my pain.  When quit it about six weeks I was myself again. I have learned to do a lot of praying and that is where I go when become a 7-10.

Trudy,I live in CT.  I've been to doctors and hospitalshere and in NYC.  Every one said something different, but when I asked for a painkiller, they refused.  UsuallyI hear: "you're already taking too many medications".I take 2 BP drugs Vasotec & Metoprolol, Xanax, 81mg Aspirin/day, Effexor XR,and Tylenol Rapid Release Gels.Thank you for your understanding.  Yes it is a horrendous nightmare.  I wascoping pretty well for years, even worked for the first 12 years of TM as thePhotographer for a University until I was in a car accident in 1998.  Thingswent downhill from there. You are in my thoughts and prayers also.KevinTrudy wrote:

Candy,Thank you for your reply.  As I mentioned, I had 2 Mri's fairly recently.  I've had about8 Mri's in the past 10 years, plus a full body bone scan, and several EMG's.  I'm notsure what good another Mri would be.The problem is, there are no doctors in my area that properly understand TM, and Iam too sick to travel to John's Hopkins to Dr. Kerr's office.  It took me 7 years toget a final diagnosis of TM, and that was at Yale Hospital, a supposedly reputablemedical facility.I have never even been able to get a doctor to give me any pain medication.  I wasgiven Xanax to help me sleep, and told that it would help my pain.  Today it feelslike my foot is being stabbed with a fork, and the fork is being
twisted around. After almost 20 years of suffering, I pray every night that I pass in my sleep.  Andanti-depressants don't help, I've tried.KevinCandis Kalley wrote:

Kevin,

For what it is worth, I was told by my Neuro, physcial therarpist, and Dr. Kerr at John Hopkins, that the lesions cause trouble from the point on.

I was first dx with lesions from T1 and T2 and possibly some at C4 down.  After 25 days, the lesions appeared from C4 down to T2 - This is when I had the shooting nerve "pain" tingling and then the next morning I woke up to be a complete quadaparaligic.  After PLEX treatments, I regained most of the use of my hands and am able to walk with a cane or walker.  But I was left with hardly any energy and strength.

Have a MRI as soon as possible - insist on it.

My hands started getting numb a few years ago.  I've had an MRI of the thoracic spinewhich didn't show anything, another MRI of the cervical spine which showed "a lot of arthritis",in the words of the neurologist.  That neurologist also said that the arthritis in my neck hasnothing to do with the numbness in my hands.  She did an EMG and said it showed CarpalTunnel Syndrome in both hands, and Ulnar nerve damage in my right elbow.  I've hadanother EMG recently and was told that there is poor conductivity not just in the nerves in my hands, but other nerves coming from my neck.  The doctor doing that test saidif I had surgery for the CTS, it might not help.  So I am supposed to get tests forhypothyroid, diabetes, and I don't know

I was perfectly healthy until the day I got the flu shot.
After I got the shot the nurse handed me the paperwork that comes with the vaccination.  When I got home I read it and one of the side effects listed was Transverse Myelitis.  I didn't know what the heck that was..until I became paralyzed, was diagnosed and did an internet search.

My suggestion?  Read the paperwork BEFORE you get the vaccination and then make your decision as to whether or not you want that shot.

Flu vaccines contain a full dose of mercury plus brain damaging aluminum.
I think it was the mercury that did me in because I have no problem with my brain.

Elderly who receive the shot for five years increase their risk of Alzheimers disease 10-fold (1,000 %).

I got that paralyzing flu shot ten years ago and haven't had a flu shot since.
And.I haven't had the flu for the past ten years.
I boost the heck out of my immune system with vitamins/minerals and it works for me.  also haven't had a cold, pneumonia, bronchiatis, etc.
I used to get bronchiatis so bad every winter that I was down in bed for 2-3 weeks.
I'm so glad those days are over.!

Don't even get me started on infant vaccines and what they are doing to our children.

Re: [TMIC] TM Banding

2006-02-07 Thread Kenneth Oliver

My lesion was at C7 and my band was just below my rib cage.  In the hospital it felt an iron band without any pain.  After a few months it was a band of pain that comes if I lay on my back. This has been for 26 years, I don't have it all the time only when I sit in with recliner too far back or try to sleep on my back.

Hi Sally,
Yes, the doctor did tell me that my banding was probably at the location of the damage in my spinal cord.  T4-T8

I'm curious now.  I'm learning that not everyone has this 'banding'.  So does it depend on where the lesion is?  Mine's at T6 - T8, and the tightness I feel is just below my rib cage.  Do the locations of other TMer's banding depend on where their damage is on the spinal cord?

Bob you have hit on the one thing that keeps UTIs going.  I have self cathed since 1981.  I use Dail soap and I have only had one uti in the last four years.  I do not go by a set number of hours, but when I feel the urge it may only be two hours or so.  I also have a RX for macrodanton ( misspelled)  I take one a day and with the dail soap I am pretty much free of uti,s. I have used this combination for about 24 years.

HE MIGHT TRY VITAMIN C, ORANGE JUICE AND CRANBERRY JUICE.  IT BUILDS UP THE ACID LEVEL IN THE URINE AND HELPS PREVENT THE BACTERIA FROM COLONIZING AND SETTLING IN TO CREATE AN INFECTION.  ANYTHING TO MAKE IT MORE ACIDIC, NOT ALKALINE.

ALSO, THREE TIMES A DAY INTERMITTENT CATHING MAY NOT BE FREQUENT ENOUGH.  IT ALLOWS THE URINE TO STAY IN THE BLADDER LONGER THAN IT SHOULD NORMALLY AND THAT ALSO ALLOWS THE BACTERIA TO GROW.  I SEEM TO RECALL EVERY FOUR HOURS IS RECOMMENDED.

Hi
He has been taking antibiotics. But the infection just comes back. He is on clean intermittent catheterization, three times a day. It is a procedure involving sterilised catheter, usedwith gloves, betadine and dettol cleansing. Still the bacteria find their way in somehow. He drinks a lot of water too but the big queston is should he have something to make his urine acidic or alkaline? Any idiea about that?

wish you a bacteria free days.

Zap that with antibiotics as soon as possible. Until it is cured he cannot progress very far.

I have a relatively harmless resident colony of pseudonomas. My colony is resistent to antibiotics. Puts a bright blue-green coating where ever it lives. It starts growing on the inside of a new hose and can be seen after about ten days. By that time the rubber hose is starting to get a dull brown, so the combination is a dull olive-green. Yuck!  After two weeks, when I change my Foley catheter, I see a pale [pleasant] color on the outside of the tip of the Foley, so I infer that the bladder wall is no worse.

To keep the colony under control [Pseudonomas can be fatal.], I practice the following:

Drink every day at least six to eight ounces of 27% cranberry juice,e.g., Northland 100% juice.

And, to flush out the bladder continuously,

Drink LOTS of water/milk/juice. I drink over two liters of water, spaced roughly equally over the 24 hours.

> ... That made him very weak in the legs

My legs become wimpy every time I have a non-local infection, whether UTI or upper respiratory or even repeated nights of too little sleep. Then, when I stand, I wilt like a candle near a hot stove.

> ... a relapse of TM. Is that possible?

Possible, but very unlikely unless MS is the underlying disease.

> ... side effects?  Are they compatible with ... Tizanidine

I've been doing all this for years. I also take 16 oral medications daily, including a small amount of tizanidine (=Zanaflex,) PRN.

Hi you all, I have not added my two cents in  a long time, but I know something about vibrations.Yesterday was 26 yrs  with TM and I have had these vibrations for longer than I can remember.  When they come I feel them from the my chest to my feet.  At times they get to be quite troublesome.  When they are the worst I can lay my hand on my leg and feel them, usually along with them I hear a large motor running it gets loud. It feels like the whole house is vibrateing.

I believe I have had my TM from 1978 or 79..and I have had the same feelings in my legs from time to time..also my right foot has turned up at the big toe..I'm walking on the outer side of my foot..so I get that feeling usually after I am on my feet to long..the vibration feeling never leaves me tho.

For the last few days I've been experiencing what feels like a sort of vibration or trembling feeling in some of my muscles. It seems to travel around between my chest, left forearm and thighs. I've experienced it to a smaller degree before, but never this much area at one time or for this length of time. It isn't painful or uncomfortable, and I'm not worried about it per se. It's just disconcerting. Ten years post-TM, I know that these kinds of things come and go.

Anyone else experience this?
