Hi Carol;

This is Dalton. I just got terminated today. It seems I couldn't overcome

Up till now they have been very nice. But they don't keep persons around

BARBRA WALTERS WRITES:

Unfortunately, many have forgotten and still countless others have never
known how Ms. Fonda betrayed not only the idea of our country, but specific
men who served and sacrificed during Vietnam

The first part of this is from an F-4E pilot. The pilot's name is Jerry
Driscoll, a River Rat.

In 1968, the former Commandant of the USAF Survival School was a POW in Ho
Lo Prison the ' Hanoi Hilton.'

Dragged from a stinking cesspit of a cell, cleaned, fed, and dressed in
clean PJ's, he was ordered to describe for a visiting American 'Peace
Activist' the 'lenient and humane treatment' he'd received.

He spat at Ms. Fonda, was clubbed, and was dragged away. During the
subsequent beating, he fell forward on to the camp Commandant 's feet, which
sent that officer berserk.

In 1978, the Air Force Colonel still suffered from double vision (which
permanently ended his flying career) from the Commandant's frenzied
application of a wooden baton.

From 1963-65, Col. Larry Carrigan was in the 47FW/DO (F-4E's). He spent 6
years in the ' Hanoi Hilton',,, the first three of which his family only
knew
he was 'missing in action'. His wife lived on faith that he was still alive.
His group, too, got the cleaned-up, fed and clothed routine in preparation
for a 'peace delegation' visit.

They, however, had time and devised a plan to get word to the world that
they were alive and still survived. Each man secreted a tiny piece of paper,
with his Social Security Number on it , in the palm of his hand.

When paraded before Ms. Fonda and a cameraman, she walked the line, shaking
each man's hand and asking little encouraging snippets like: 'Aren't you
sorry you bombed babies?' and 'Are you grateful for the humane treatment
from your benevolent captors?' Believing this HAD to be an act, they each
palmed her their sliver of paper.

She took them all without missing a beat.. At the end of the line and once
the camera stopped rolling, to the shocked disbelief of the POWs, she turned
to the officer in charge and handed him all the little pieces of paper..

Three men died from the subsequent beatings. Colonel Carrigan was almost
number four but he survived, which is the only reason we know of her actions
that day.

To All TMIC family;
I need all the prayers for my childrens mother, my ex-wife Sally. We are
very good friends and have a better relationship than when we were married.
Here is a short version she wrote explaining what has been happening to her.
many of you know she was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer years ago:
here is her latest condition. She needs all our prayers to survive this for
any length of time.
Thank you and Sincerely,
Bernie

Have been on a couple of different oral chemotherapies since first
discovering the cancer in 2005 - Arimidex for a long time, 'til it
apparently stopped working (when I had the double mastectomy in late 2008),
and Xeloda, which also did not work. This week I'll have my second round of
Taxotere. Couple of weeks after the first round, my hair started falling
out, so now I'm shaved bald!
I've lost about 80 pounds, which is skinniest Ive been in about 30 years!
I look normal to myself because spent greater portion of my life closer to
this weight, but my appearance is apparently shocking to those who haven't
seen me in awhile.
I get short of breath easily and my voice is hoarse most of the time.
I've already outlived the median life expectancy of 3 years for my diagnosis
(stage 4 breast cancer), so plan to keep it up as long as I can! Chemo
makes me tired, so I sleep a lot.
It's a funny kind of limbo...
Now I see why didn't want to write this - it's depressing! How does one
write about cancer in an upbeat way?
Anyway, I don't spend time wringing my hands moaning. Enjoy myself doing
what I want each day and I get lots of rest!
That's all for now.. Pray for me and keep my in your happy thoughts.

Janice I don’t have leg spasms but if I am sitting or it has been a while since
I made a trip to the bathroom, I get a pain in the area just above the pubic
bone. That tells me it has been sometime since I went potty. The pain also
wakes me at night so again I go. I have noticed that when I am going the pain
slowly goes away, and by the time I have emptied my bladder the pain is gone.
That has been happening for about the past year, and my urologist is aware of
it and is not concerned. I believe that maybe some nerves are now coming

If Bee is legitimate, she would be contacting her credit card companies to stop

My instinct is to ignore this plea for financial help.

I have to share with you my attempt at cutting back on my high intake of
pregabalin. I thought I was going great guns for about two days, then I
awoke with my skin on fire and electrical shock torture in limbs, torso and
neck. I didn't even know what was going on. Then, I gobbled a couple of
pregabalin and waited. In a couple of hours the pains subsided.

Hooked for life, I guess. No way to get off any of it.

WOW! wow wow!

So so similar.

Thank you ever so very much for sharing these insights!!!

It is so affirming to hear my symptoms described--- yes humming and
thrumming!

GReat solutions!

What is the name of your pedal machine?

My PT came today and brought a walker. She wanted me to try to stand. I am
near tears of joy to recount this --- there's no way I could do this, but it
just meant SO MUCH to be seen as a person who could be assisted and
improved vs. being denied, derided or dismissed.

I pulled it close and talked about how the farme need to fit around me, vs
be in fonr of me.

You can't stand on jello, she mused.

So we talked about isometrics--- she asked me to push my extended leg (
that she held)

down against her hand. I tried and saw nothing... but she said she felt

flutterings.

So i did these several times on each leg --she felt flutterings.

BUT I FELT THE PULSE MOVE FROM MY THIGH TO THE BACK OF MY CALF.

I offer up prayers and praise.

She is going to give me another series of exercises that i can do in bed to
reawaken these connections.

She talked about a stimulation machine that makes the muscles contract.

Again these are things that were never done for me in the five years of TM
paralysis.

Thanks again, for chiming in!

That we heal and that all be well,

Akua

So familiar--my wife does my pt because I cannot afford $1600/day for a live
in PT facility that was prescribed for me. I know all about the buzzing--I
call it humming in my feet and the stronger thrumming in my legs. But my
wife found a solution for feet jumping off the wheel chair. I use a regular
chair in the house and she uses a velcro back brace (the kind with no
shoulder straps) and wraps it around the legs of the wheel chair and my
legs. Works!

I also have a Jazzy electric wheel chair that we bought second hand from
Craigs List for a $1000 that I use for outdoor activities like my grandsons
ball games and trips to Cost Co. Here's the neat part. She screwed a pair
of sandals onto foot rest of the Jazzy and straps my feet in so they can't
jump out.

We also bought a pedal machine and she put sandals on that as well because
my feet wouldn't stay on it. $100 for the pedal machine 25 for the
slippers. It moves my legs for me and I am now doing 30 minutes at top
speed twice a day. It will keep your legs from shrinking.

I also contacted Redman about a standup electric wheel chair and found it
cost $28,000. I passed.

I know this is a very late reply, but for what it is worth . . .

I had a partial knee replacement - Avon - on my right knee on March 26,
2009. It was the best thing I did!

I had severe arthritis and bone on bone. So at 47 years of age, my doctor
suggested the Avon partial replacement.

Before my surgery I was very limited to what I could do. I was to minimize
the amount of walking and avoid stairs. The only exercise I was permitted
was swimming and golf if I took a cart. I was in constant pain.

When I woke from surgery, my knee ached. But within a few hours after the
surgery, I literally had no pain at all. The nurses would not believe me so
I had to lie and tell them that my pain level was around 3 on a scale of 1
to 10. That seemed to make them happy and they would leave me alone and not
try to force pain meds on me.

My surgery was at 1:00 PM on Thursday and I spent the day in bed. On friday
morning, they removed my catheter and I used the walker twice, once to get
to washroom to wash up and the second time to actually use the washroom.
After that I was on crutches.

Because of the 14 surgeries I had on my right knee prior to the partial
replacement, I had a great deal of scar tissue which hampered my mobility.
I relied on my crutches for 10 weeks and then went to a cane for almost 4
weeks.

I have full mobility and aside from a squeek I have absolutely no pain.

Best thing I ever did.

Hi Patti,

I'm not sure if he is right or wrong, but my physical therapist told me that
I probably have hypersensitivity. I am not sure if that had anything to do
with the pain issue, but I don't think so. I think it's due to the fact
that I don't walk well and that I wouldn't be able to do the rehab as well
or in the same manner as somebody who is walking much better. I know that
they keep you comfortable with pain meds, but I went through plenty with my
shoulder, needing to put pressure on it just to be able to ambulate about a
little. I still needed to get back and forth to the bathroom, on and off a
toilet, etc and that's just the minimum.

Wow, it seems like a double replacement is rather common. Although I cannot
imagine doing 2 at once, it may be nice if you need to do them. to get the
pain and rehab over with all at once. And.then on with your life!

Barbara my husband had double knee replacement in 2006. Whatever pain he
had must not have been too bad as he didn't complain. I think the one thing
that made it easier for him is doing your pre-surgery exercised to
strengthen leg muscles. A month before surgery he a given a 3-ring binder
with all the excises listed. He did them faithfully all day so his body was
ready for the demand surgery would put on his legs. In fact, he only went
to P.T. for about 3-4 weeks, as they said they couldn't do any more for him
and Medicare wouldn't pay for it any more. He was driving again in less
than 4 weeks. Of course, he didn't have any other health problems, which
might make a big difference.

Dalton, you are so right. I am older than most of the TMers, and I remember
most of my friends had a grandma and/or grandpa as part of the family. My
grandparents were gone before I was born, but my husband's family took care
of the grandparents until the end. My husband and I moved to Waupaca, WI so
we could be near my daughter and her family. We live separately but
together. We live in a house where an apartment is joined by a breeze way
to the main house where my husband and I live. I get to see my beautiful
granddaughters each day, my daughter is nearby in case of an emergency. So
far no emergencies, thank God.

I agree that this country has lost its way over the years. I think part of
it is the fact that families don't live in the same community, but are all
over the country so family is unable to give help when needed. Also, the
fact that both husband and wife must work and are stretched so thin as far
as time is concerned. I don't know the answer to this problem. It has been
going on for so many years our current generations are conditioned to think
only of themselves.

I can only pray for the future of this nation.

In response to our discussion of American nursing homes and rehab centers:

I remember going to the nursing home to say good-bye to my grandmother of
103 years of age. I had to move to Texas for work.

She was very sharp while she could still read, until at aged 102, the
cataract pealing surgery changed her nervous system and did not improve her
vision. After that, she couldn't read about Nixon and his cronies and she
lost interest in things. When I saw her the staff had shifted treatment for
her from some level of respect to simply tying her in a wheelchair with a
crapper pan under it, keeping her doped up all day, nodding her head this
way and that, so she wouldn't be any trouble for maybe eight hours.

My grandmother, who used to be so fierce well into her 90's she had us all
scared and paying attention, now like a baby with grey hair, on the nod
from the dope they gave her. I put my hand on her dear head and said some
prayers. Then I had to go; our mother would see her during the months to
follow. She died at 105. That was in 1989.

I can't adjust to the disrespect they show to the old and disabled in
America. Some of it America brought on itself, with all those notions of
the nuclear family and labor mobility. Like most of my friends when I was a
kid, we lived in a house with three generations in it, the grandparents in
their rooms on the second floor, my parents down the hall, and we kids in
another room. Back then people were able to hang on to jobs, or if not
jobs, at least stay with the same company. The company had a personal
relationship with the worker if he or she was lucky and the company was
good. But there were good companies then, who tried to keep things going
and all their labor force in work as long as possible.

But my wife and our daughter lived in Florida after moving from Texas; and
our mother was in Massachusetts, my sister and her family were in New York,
and my brother's family lived in Connecticut. My cousins' families were in
Colorado. My wife's parents were in Vermont.

Now I live in Abu Dhabi. My present and future wife, Qian-her parents are
in Chengdu, central China.

When did America stop being a family and start being a team? Teams are
different than families. Teams bench the weak ones, and when they don't
improve, or are no longer capable of playing the game up to snuff, they are
let go. Families, on the other hand, nurse the weak back to health and
business, raise the little ones, and take care of their old, who have now
become unable to compete as before. Nursing homes would be staffed by our
own neighbors, who take care of Mrs. Johnson because she taught some of the
staff in fifth grade; and Stan Kopek mowed our lawns and was a vet of the
Pacific Theater in World War II. Any complaints would arouse the interest
of the Congregational Church's Reverend, the Baptist Church's pastor, the
synagogue's Rabbi, or St. Bridges' Catholic priest maybe. They'd have a few
words with the nursing home's management and that would take care of it.

American management and our government now think of themselves as a team,
with the people representing an inexhaustible source of interchangeable
workers that can be added or subtracted at will, who do not represent any
responsibility for the firm in terms of the workers' family needs. I don't
have a warm and fuzzy feeling for Team America. Sounds too much like living
as the people in that old movie, Metropolis, had to live. That's why our
nursing homes pay staff starvation wages a lot of the time, who don't
generally have the interest of the patient on

I think the reason I was very happy with my care when I was in rehab was
because I was at a hospital Not Nursing Home/Rehab facility. We all know
that nursing home care sucks big time. There was always enough equipment
and tables to work on. My P.T. was scheduled at a hour at a time twice a

As some of the other TM'ers have found out when being in a skilled
nursing/rehab facility and required more care than others - you don't always
get it.

Another thing that makes me angry on reflection is that , though i was
paralyzed and had TM,

I was a lot less work than a lot of other patients. I was younger than 95%
of the other residents,

I could communicate. I was easy to contain and maintain from a nursing
standpoint. They only had to help me move from place to place and teach me
how to move. Having upper body meant that no one had to feed me or dress me
or wash me -- they just had to get me to the food or the shower. If they
were better resourced, my falling in the shower wouldn't have happened--
that happened with an

unassisted transfer from a wet shower bench into a sliding wheel chair (I'm
falling i said as the aide stood and watched me fall)

at home as in the hospital -- i don't do wet transfers-- I use a shower
wheelchair so no more going from

wet to wet.

One of the things I would love to fix is nursing homes think tank?
Lobby? there's a guy who has developed new kind of community for nursing
homes, healthy... but they are few and far between and require $. for me the
prison analogy holds --- people are supposed to be rehabilitated, but they
are most often warehoused.

for colon surgery and when I was walking down the hall to the restroom, I
noticed a patient in bed completely naked and no curtain was closed. They
were trying to reach behind them to pull up a sheet. I complained to my
husband's doctor but was afraid that if I complained to the nursing staff my
husband's care would suffer. I now realize that I should have said
something more.

But when you are dealing with cancer surgery you aren't thinking right.

The closest I came to hell on earth was in rehab. I was allowed to fall
twice. I was given the wrong meds daily for nearly two months, I was
insulted and demeaned. I remember the nurse entering my room and finding me
crying -- I was in awful electric pain --- and she told me I shouldn't be
crying. She often brought he son to work. I wrote her about her gross
insensitivity and she apologized.

I worked hard to learn how to use the sliding board to get in and out of
bed-- it was so so hard, and frightening, because an idiot had let me fall,
but this mainly

because if you couldn't get up, you wouldn't be attended to. Now that I'm
home,

I understand one of the basic challenges the idiot didn't address-- the
wheelchair slides on a polished, linoleum floor. I have a bathmat with grips
by my bed now, so my wheelchair, doesn't slide. this is just one of a
zillion things they could have taught or worked on or shared or presented
to or for me and didn't. And this was rehab, to ready me for life on my
own as a paraplegic: worthless.

One of the friends I made there was immobile without assistance, although
unlike me, she was not paralyzed. She was left on her bedpan

for an hour. I had passed aides chatting at the station, ignoring her
buzzer, as i wheeled down the hall to see her.

I wrote the board and management and met with management. I met with the
dietitian twice, who quit about a month after i left. She told me that she
was unable to get me the food that with restore my health ( fresh fruit and
vegtables, fish, whole grain breads, baked potatoes).

I kept in touch with several friends I made there who were still there when
I left, because we all knew the importance of having people call.

Only the cleaning staff helped. They advocated and interceded. I'll never
forget one man who came and prayed for and over me.

An investigation began when I and several other patients lost over 50
pounds. The few visits I had, folks brought food. Staff ate or discarded my
(good) food.

So, while I don't know about the hip pain, I can relate to the soul pain of
being in a nursing home.

It was like being in prison. There was a courtyard allegedly for getting
air--- the door was always locked. I was awakened, whenever they felt like
it, seldom consistently. Hellish to be awakened at 5 a.m. to have blood
drawn by unskilled phlebotomists. Privacy was seldom observed

I remember always asking for doors or curtains to be closed.

If Cindy needs calls, I'm more than willing. all other things being equal,
being in a nursing home is awful.

When I was first dx with TM, the first hospital was a pit. The people were
nice enough, but the food I won't feed to a dog. After a week, I was
transferred to their larger hospital that had a rehab floor, mostly for
people who had knee and hip replacement. My nurses and P.T. people couldn't
have been nicer or more capable. Even the people who came in to clean were
all so caring. I was there for over 4 weeks, and my room was the place they
all spent their breaks. I was so glad to go home, but in one way I hated
leaving all the wonderful care givers I had. I wish all could have that
kind of care, especially when you consider what we pay for it.

Interesting to read these last two emails, as it reminded me of how I
injured myself last summer by overstretching, but not by the same kind of
accident as did Wim! I didn't even know I'd done it! We stretch to help
manage the spacticity, right. Well, I finally went to a podiatrist when
my left ankle had been hurting worse and worse. He told me I had TORN my
Achilles tendon!

Apparently, I had gradually stretched it too much and it had torn 33%! It
healed in a few months, but still hurts almost as much as before it
healed. Now they tell me I have Sural Nerve Neuritis - apparently from
scar tissue pressing on the nerve??? Good news is that the Podiatrist
recommended Lyrica, which just happens to also be good for spacticity,
too. I've only been on it a couple of weeks but it seems to be helping.

Bottom line is, PLEASE BE CAREFUL NOT TO OVERSTRETCH!

Apparently, b/c of the spacticity, there's not as much give as there
normally would be, and it facilitated the tear. And even more, it's the
exact pain I've had in my hip (thigh) for 4 years, which they decided was
from overcompensating for my right leg which was the one most affected by
the TM. But the podiatrist agreed that if I could tear at the ankle, I
could well have torn a tendon in my thigh/hip. It all makes sense b/c
someone had talked me into doing some extreme stretches shortly after the
initial TM, thinking that would help me. At the time I didn't have too
much feeling in that leg and didn't notice how bad it was until my feeling
improved! But I'm pretty sure, now, that that was what caused this
sciatica-like pain, too.

I've been wanting to post about this to warn others about overstretching.
(I tend to easily go to extremes! It's keeping that balance; being
'moderate' that I have a problem with. And now I'm paying for it! :)

Happy New Year,
Sally

I had a hamstring problem too. Therapists had me doing lots of
stretching and I am back to normal (if you can call TM normal) now.
 Good luck
with it.Spain sounds like a great cure!Tell us about the trip when
 you get back.

I never heard that you get into trouble with too much calcium. I take over
1200 mg a day, but I don't take them all at once. I take one at lunch and
one at dinner, plus my multi which has calcium in the a.m. I also take one
magnesium tablet in the a.m. It helps to absorb the calcium, but you don't
take it at the same time as your calcium. I was under the impression if you
take more than you need, you just pee it out which is a waste since they
aren't cheap. Plus I drink milk and have milk on my cereal in the a.m.

John,

I'm not sure what your spasms are like - maybe yours are much worse than
mine, but I've found that if I take sufficient calcium supplements, I
don't have them. (What I refer to as 'spasms', for me, is when nerves in
my legs actually cause my legs to jerk around when I'm still. It makes it
hard to go to sleep.)

I take maybe 800 mg to 1200 mg/day, depending on how much calcium foods
I've eaten. If my legs start to spasm, I know I didn't take enough and
get up and take some. (Calcium is more effective if taken in smaller
doses - i.e. 400mg - throughout the day, rather than all at once.) My
calcium levels were good before I was given the 5000 mg methyl-prednisone
to zap the myelitis, but that zapped the calcium, too. So this is likely
to be true for all of us who were given steroids to treat the TM. It
might be worth it to give it a try.

Sally

John, do you have paralysis and spasms? And is that why the neuro has you

Because I would love to be more medicated if I could.

I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and I pray there is some
improvement in your lives during the next year. I am thankful that I have
my upperbody not affected by TM and look forward to medical science finding
a way to regrow the Mylan sheath. Even though I cannot walk I can use my
hands and arms and brain and my laptop to communicate with my friends across
the country.

Each of you and your strength provides a reason for us to go on and without
contact with you all life would be much harder indeed. It seems that all of
us have different restrictions from TM and while I get very depressed about
not being able to use my legs, I have the good forture not to have the
severe pain many of you experience. The level of pain I do have is mostly
manageable and so I consider myself very lucky.

I think that each of us must look at the positive abilities we have that
others may not have to help us gather the strength and will to continue.

May God bless you all.

And I'm not even sure Neurontin really helps. But I need a walker when I'm

Maybe not.

She swears by this Amtriptyline. She says that she takes it at bedtime and

My husband had both knees replaced 6 weeks ago. He spent 3 weeks in the

The first week he had a constant motion machine on his knees to keep the
muscles limber to bend his knees. About every 2 days they increased the
angle of the machine to bend the knees a little more. His pain was
controlled with oral pain meds ice packs. Physical Therapy was started
the second day post-op he was up in a chair. In the rehab unit the 2nd
3rd weeks, he had 3 hours of PT in the AM another 3 hours in the
afternoon. After the 2nd week, he was walking with a walker, showering with
assistance, taking meals in a common dining room. This rehab was very
intense, but really helped. At home now he recieves PT three times a week.
After 1 week home he is now walking with a cane even by himself. The
first 2 weeks were the hardest, but once he was home improvement has really
been fast and home health will probably only come another 2-4 weeks. Hope
this answers some of your questions. My husband has COPD has done well.
He was in such pain before the surgery (bone on bone in both knees) he is
very glad he had the surgery. Any questions I would try to answer.

Barbara my husband had double knee replacement in 2006. Whatever pain he had
must not have been too bad as he didn’t complain. I think the one thing that
made it easier for him is doing your pre-surgery exercised to strengthen leg
muscles. A month before surgery he a given a 3-ring binder with all the
excises listed. He did them faithfully all day so his body was ready for the
demand surgery would put on his legs. In fact, he only went to P.T. for about
3-4 weeks, as they said they couldn’t do any more for him and Medicare wouldn’t
pay for it any more. He was driving again in less than 4 weeks. Of course, he
didn’t have any other health problems, which might make a big difference.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Hi Rob,

After having trouble with what I thought was my leg due to 2 DVT's and poor
circulation, I found out that

I am not totally bone on bone yet, but there is a lot of arthritis, which means
I could get the replacement. I'm only 59, so figure if I can put it off for
awhile, I will. As much as I walk, I'll probably never wear it out.

I was actually on schedule for a knee replacement last year when I asked to see
a physical therapist in order to best improve the strength in my body so I
could get through the rehab in the best way possible. The therapist told me
that the knee is no walk in the park. It is extremely painful, after the
surgery, but especially the rehab. I don't understand what you mean about
rehab differently. From what I understand, and I really didn't go into it all
the way, you have exercises and walking. He told me that a very painful part
is straightening the knee, as it will want to be bent to be in less pain, but
not good since you develop scar tissue very quickly and if not careful, you
will not be able to straighten it fully. I had a couple of visits and from the
exercises that I was doing for my legs I no longer had the pain that I was
having.

At the time I also was having a lot of pain with my shoulder over for a year
and a half at that point, so knew it would be extra painful on the shoulder. I
use canadian crutches or a rolling walker to get around, and the orthopedic
surgeon says that I walk on my shoulders, lol. I had rotator cuff surgery and
a bone spur removed two months ago and am no longer in pain there, so when I
really need the knee, I'll hopefully be in better shape.

Good luck Rob, just thought I'd share my small bit of knowledge.

Hugs, Barbara A in Auburn CA

I just wish things didnt take so long.
perhaps our children(which are grown) or even our grandchildren will benefit
greatly from things like this.

SCIENTISTS TURN SKIN CELLS DIRECTLY INTO BLOOD CELLS - WITHOUT USING EMBRYOS -
Step aside stem-cell research. Step aside Dr. Connors and his use of lizard DNA
to regrow human tissue (a Spiderman thing). A group of Canadian researchers
have successfully produced red blood cells straight from adult skin cells. Not
only did these scientists trick human skin cells into becoming blood cells,
but no stem cells were harmed in the making of the experiment.

Stem cell research has long held hope for those suffering from major
degenerative diseases. By infusing healthy stem cells into the pancreas of
diabetics or the heart muscle of heart-attack victims or the brains of people
with Parkinson's disease, researchers have hoped to replace degenerating tissue
with healthy tissue that can grow and regenerate patients back to health.

Now, researchers have found a method to completely skip the stem cell stage
through a process called direct conversion and turn one kind of adult cell
into another. Stem-cell researchers at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada,
published their findings in the November 25, 2010 edition of Nature, describing
their success in taking fibroblast cells from human skin and converting them
into the progenitors for red blood cells.

Mickie Bhatia and his fellow researchers faced the same problem many
researchers face when working with stem cells; the cells want to act like
embryonic cells. Those cells, because they think they're embryonic, make
embryonic and fetal blood, Bhatia said. Adults do not need embryonic
hemoglobin in their blood. They need grown-up hemoglobin. Bhatia and his team
decided that they therefore needed to find a method of taking adult cells and
converting them into the adult red blood cells they wanted.

The researchers infected the fibroblast cells with a virus that inserts OCT4
gene into them. This would normally transform the fibroblasts into induced
pluripotent stem cells (IPS) – cells able to turn into anything. However, after
encouraging the cells to grow and reproduce in a cocktail of regulatory
proteins, researchers found that the cells developed into blood progenitor
cells without first turning into IPS intermediate cells. IPS cells tend to
cause tumors, which means there's an advantage in avoiding IPS cells as the
middle man. The team had success; the blood progenitor cells produced
functioning white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets – of the adult
variety.

Direct conversion researcher John Gearhart of the University of Pennsylvania
told the Associated Press, This is something that's really caught fire because
it's an easy strategy to use. Everyone's out there trying their different
combinations (of chemical signals) to see if they can succeed.

Still, Gearhart cautioned the public to not get too excited too fast. The
direct conversion technology is new and requires a great deal more research
before it can be ready for testing on human patients. There are many unknowns
regarding how these cells will actually act in the human body. We do not want
to put red blood cells in a human being and find that those cells want to act
like skin cells after all.

We're a long way from showing safety and efficacy for any of these things,
Gearhart said. This stuff is all so new that we have a lot of work to do.

There is great hope that new techniques like this will provide the field of
regenerative medicine with options that avoid the moral and ethical (and
medical) problems associated with embryonic stem cell research. Dr. David
Prentice, a former Indiana State University biology professor who is now a
fellow at the Family Research Council said the success of the technique
exposes the failure of unethical, unsafe embryonic stem cell research, rather
than the usual hype associated with embryo research. Direct conversion offers
an ethical way forward, and may even be one mechanism by which adult stem cells
are producing current successes in patients.

[TMIC] Med Question

2010-12-04 Thread Patricia Cooley
On Thursday I saw a new doctor, a physiatrist (sp), that my neuro
recommended. I am very impressed with him and his care which was very
thorough. When I mentioned my freezing/burning and pain n my feet, he gave
me a script for gabapentin. My previous neuro always said there was nothing
I could take. I know many of who have mentioned it previously. I took my
first capsule last night when I went to bed. This morning I feel so groggy,
like I had a night on the town last night. Is that common? Will it go away
after I am on it for a while? Maybe I should take it earlier in the evening
so the affect wears off by morning.

He has also recommend that I saw a ortho who will evaluate me to see if a
brace on my bad leg would help with my balance and walking. If it helps, I
am game for anything.

Thank you in advance for any advice you can give me.

Hello Group,

This is Judy Hoops (Jude) and it has been quite a while since I have written to
the site. No reason why, except that maybe I needed a break from all of the
talk of the “blusey” side of the disease. I try to maintain a positive
attitude, but since the death of my best TM friend, Pam Montz, I needed a long
break before I could once more become an active participant of the group like I
used to be.

For new members, I have had TM for somewhat more than eight years, can’t recall
due to memory dysfunction, and other related symptoms of TM, for one being a
difficulty in typing, where I used to be a whiz...maybe just a matter of
continuing to do it on a regular basis. I am paralyzed from T3 (breast level
with the use of my arms, Thank God.) I have horrible continuous pain from T3
on the Spinal Column to the tips of my toes. I am not able to walk, use a
wheelchair to get around and spend a lot of time in bed just because of
laziness.

We have no children and do not have a large social group and no family to speak
of. My husband wanted property so we moved out of our living area where we had
resided forever, to a small, and I mean “small” village where we have 5 acres
and a nice two story home, which we bought before I became ill. Now, the house
makes no sense whatsoever and I am able to use only a small portion of it; my
bedroom, which used to be the den, the kitchen/dining area and living room. I
have spent so long in my bedroom that I have forgotten what the rest of the
house looks like. It’s either that or the memory difficulties which I just two
days ago began taking meds to, hopefully, reverse the dysfunction.

OK, that’s all I can muster for my first time back. What’s going on with all
of my old friends? Let me know.

I love you all,

Jude

Anyway, I make use of the three rooms, but my husband does all of the cooking
and eats in my room with me, and he takes care of all of the remaining
household chores that I cannot do because of the constant intense pain I
experience 24/7. I have pain meds, but hate to take them because they turn me
into a “zombie” and it affects most of my “normal” human existence, as it is.
Most of you know what I mean, the rest of you will catch on the longer you have
TM and continue to read these excerpts.

Subject: [TMIC] Final diagnosis: Transverse idiopathic

Well folks;

The doctor's final diagnosis, of which I am in possession, affirms the
earlier diagnosis and in full regard to the New York work-up, that I had
Transverse Myelitis, idiopathic, which means, cause unknown.

He also said that the anomalies in the brainstem the New York drs noted was
also caused by Transverse Myelitis and is affecting my arms, hands and
everything below. He also said that I did indeed have Transverse Myelitis,
and that it affected my upper spine and everything below.

Now, the goal is management, because it has affected things so that the
fusions and metal, which have always affected the circulatory system in the
spine, can make the TM act up. Any change causes the spinal cord and
associated nerves to swell up hours later and give me problems for days.
This is the TM effect; and I will need to deal with it from now on.

I am very happy since the pain is mostly easy except for days following any
stress or exertion, I can walk and go to work and do my job. So, I am very

RE: [TMIC] Peddle Machine

2010-11-20 Thread Patricia Cooley
I am sure not an expert, but after getting TM I went to rehab for several
months. The therapists always put me on several different peddle bikes at
each session. At the time it seemed like I was on each one for quite a
while. As far as how long and how fast should be checked out with your doc
or P.T. person.

Has anyone used a peddle machine to work their legs? I am using one now

should I run my legs at one session and is it adviseable to do more than one
session a day. I am currently doing 20 minutes and one session a day at

Some of you may recall that I was the drummer with a group called the
Edsels in the late 50's. We recorded a song called Rama Lama Ding Dong.
Anyway, I was talkin with Harry Green (2nd Tenor), and Marshall Sewel (Bass)
the other night, and we discussed George (Wydell) Jones who passed away two
years ago. George was the lead singer with us. Marshall asked what was wrong
with me using a cane, so I told him. He asked if that was anything like
Polio and I told him the difference, and started complaining. He said, Ya
know, Doc Had Polio. Doc who I asked. He said Doc Pomus who's real name was
Jerome Felder. I never met him but Marshall had so he related this story.
Doc contracted Polio as a child way back and in his early years, and was
confined to a wheel chair. It seems he and his wife were at an awards
ceremony where Doc was watching his wife dance with other guys that they of
course knew, so Doc penned a song for her as he watched called Save the
last dance for me. If anyone here is old enough, the Drifters recorded that
back in the early 60's. Check out the Drifters on You Tube, click on save
the last dance for me, and listen to the words. Just goes to show what you
can do if you set your mind to it. He wrote a ton of other hits also, but
this one especially hit home with me. Something I never knew before. I guess
we never stop learning.

AWESOME! I think this one will stick with you awhile :)

The
Cab Ride

I arrived at the address and honked the horn.
after waiting a few minutes
I walked to the
door and knocked.. 'Just a minute', answered a
frail, elderly voice. I could hear something
being dragged across the floor.

After
a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in
her 90's stood before me. She was wearing a
print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned
on it, like somebody out of a 1940's
movie.

By her side was a small nylon
suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had
lived in it for years. All the furniture was
covered with sheets.

There were no
clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils
on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard
box filled with photos and
glassware.

'Would you carry my bag
out to the car?' she said. I took the suitcase
to the cab, then returned to assist the
woman.
She took my arm and we walked
slowly toward the curb.
She kept
thanking me for my kindness. 'It's nothing', I
told her.. 'I just try to treat my passengers
the way I would want my mother to be
treated.'
'Oh, you're such a good
boy, she said. When we got in the cab, she gave
me an address and then asked, 'Could you drive
through downtown?'

'It's not the
shortest way ma'am,' I answered
quickly..

'Oh, I don't mind,' she
said. 'I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a
hospice.

I looked in the rear-view
mirror. Her eyes were glistening. 'I don't have
any family left,' she continued in a soft
voice.. 'The doctor says I don't have very
long.' I quietly reached over and shut off the
meter.

'What route would you like me
to take?' I asked.
For the next two
hours, we drove through the city. She showed me
the building where she had once worked as an
elevator operator.
We drove through the
neighborhood where she and her husband had lived
when they were newlyweds She had me pull up in
front of a furniture warehouse that had once
been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a
girl.

Sometimes she'd ask me to slow
in front of a particular building or corner and
would sit staring into the darkness, saying
nothing.

As the first hint of sun was
creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, 'I'm
tired. Let's go now'.

We drove in
silence to the address she had given me. It was
a low building, like a small convalescent home,
with a driveway that passed under a
portico.

Two orderlies came out to
the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were
solicitous and intent, watching her every move.
They must have been expecting her.

I
opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to
the door. The woman was already seated in a
wheelchair.

'How much do I owe you?'
She asked, reaching into her
purse.

'Nothing,' I
said

'You have to make a living,' she
answered.

'There are other
passengers,' I responded.

Almost
without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She
held onto me tightly.

'You gave an
old woman wonderful moments of joy,' she
said.
'Thank you.'

I squeezed her
hand, then walked into the dim morning
light.. Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound
of the closing of a life..

I didn't
pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove
aimlessly lost in thought. For the rest of that
day, I could hardly talk. What if that woman had
gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient
to end his shift?
What
if I had refused to take the run, or had honked
once, then driven away?

On a quick
review, I don't think that I have done anything
more important in my life.

We're
conditioned to think that our lives revolve
around great moments.

But great
moments often catch us unaware-beautifully
wrapped in what others may consider a small
one.

PEOPLE MAY NOT REMEMBER EXACTLY
WHAT YOU DID, OR WHAT YOU SAID ~BUT~THEY WILL
ALWAYS REMEMBER HOW YOU MADE THEM
FEEL.

You won't get any big surprise
in 10 days if you send this to ten people. But,
you might help make the world a little kinder
and more compassionate by sending.
it on and
reminding us that often it is the random acts of
kindness that most benefit all of
us.

Life
may not be the party we hoped for, but while we
are here we might as well dance.

News release:

StemCells, Inc. Files to Conduct Neural Stem Cell Trial in Chronic Spinal
Cord Injury
PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov 15, 2010 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) --StemCells, Inc.
(Nasdaq:STEM) announced today that is has filed an application with
Swissmedic, the Swiss regulatory agency for therapeutic products, to conduct
a clinical trial in Switzerland of the Company's HuCNS-SC(R) purified human
neural stem cells in chronic spinal cord injury patients. If authorized, the
study would enroll patients who are three to 12 months post-injury.With
this filing we have taken a tangible step to broaden the clinical
development of our HuCNS-SC product candidate beyond the brain and into the
spinal cord, said Martin McGlynn, President and CEO of StemCells, Inc.
This exciting initiative is supported by extensive preclinical research
demonstrating the ability of our proprietary cells to restore lost motor
function when transplanted in the chronic spinal cord injury setting. The
prospect of extending the treatment window to months or longer following
injury would mean that a much larger population of injured patients could
potentially benefit from such an approach.

Janice,

I think I've said this before... but I thank God every day that I was already
taking an anti-depressant before TM hit me. I believe it made (and still makes)
all the difference in my attitude towards TM. In fact, many of my friends and
family have remarked about it. I have always been one to not look back. I take
what I have and go forward and been very good at adapting to my situation.

You're right about it being a constant battle. I think we can't disregard the
severity of what has happened to us by wishing too hard that we'll recover. I
have yet to read from anyone who posts regularly that they've 'miraculously'
been cured. There are obviously too few qualified doctors to treat TMers that
are unwilling to network with those few who are working hard to find a cure and
treatment. If they would all work together and take advantage of our inputs,
maybe we could one day see a light at the end of this very long tunnel... what
a concept! Unfortunately, when dealing with damaged nerves and the seemingly
infinite number of symptoms, it's hard to pinpoint any one treatment -
especially when no one remedy works for everyone. They're trying to hit a
moving target that's always changing.

I share your feelings about your tolerance for others, but I find I'm very
touchy now with people who abuse handicapped parking, are impatient with my
slowness and difficulty getting my hands to work just to get the right amount
of change out of my purse, or not controlling their children or teaching them
to give me a little extra berth so they don't kick my cane or cause me to trip.

Besides dealing with all the physical TM issues, it's immensely more
frustrating once we step outside the 'safety' of our own front door. I figure
if I use medication to help treat my physical issues, why wouldn't I use it to
help treat my mental/emotional ones?

I also have the residuals as Linda mentioned...burning, banding, weakness,
bladder control. Sometimes I can void normally (pre TM) and other times I have
to sit on the pot for 5 minutes to void. I feel like I am about to burst, but
nothing comes out. I wiggle and wiggle and finally a slow trickle that takes
maybe another 3 minutes. I would say about half the time I void normally and
half of the time, I don't.

This week, my back is killing me. It started Saturday with a burning itching
sensation and then Sunday immense pain began about 3 inches lower, about waist
level and lower. My hips hurt and painful when I stand and bear weight. I was
taking Aleve for my discomfort and this week I graduated to Vicodin and
Flexeril. I'm not sure, but I think my pain is from spinal stenosis and
bulging disks instead of the TM. I have scheduled my 2nd Lumbar Epidural for
next week, if I still need it. Would have gone this week, but I have to
discontinue Plavix, aspirin and Aleve before I can get the epidural. What a
zoo!

Has anyone else been receiving spam emails from me? When? What were they?
I'm upset thinking that somehow I've passed along spam.

Cheryl, I wonder if someone has hacked into your account. I have been
getting spam e-mails from you both personally and through TMIC.

RE: [TMIC] ? spam

2010-10-10 Thread Patricia Cooley
Cheryl I have been wondering the same thing. I got 2 e-mails from celrods
today and have in the past. There is no description as to what the sites
are and I have not opened them either. Neither have a I-mailed celrods back
not knowing who it is. If they are legit, I wish they would include a
description or comment about the web site. If not, then don't bother to
pass it on. I don't remember getting anything from pkene2002 but I will
keep my eyes peeled for it.

I've been getting emails from both of them that have addresses in the

opened one. I just delete them. In the subject line it says either no

companies, pet care ,etc. Must be one of those that sends to everyone in
their address book.

RE: [TMIC] handicapped placard

2010-10-09 Thread Patricia Cooley
I agree with you what a shame that people act that way. All they would have
to do is spend a few days in our condition, then they would realize what
having handicapped parking close by means to us. I also have another gripe.
In public restrooms, people who use the handicap stall when they don't have
to. When out, I use a walker or cane, and cannot use the regular size stall
as there isn't enough room to turn your walker around.

Parking is my biggest gripe. I use an accessible van and need to get out
using the ramp on the passenger side. 3 times this month someone was
parked on the stripes adjacent to the parking spot. One time I called the
police and he didn't even know how to write a ticket and for what amount (
this is in New York). Ended up they got a tkt for $250. Once was at the
library and we found the person. This week in the rain I was at the mall.
I had to ask a stranger to pull my car out so I could get into my car. I
didn't have time to wait for the police and security at the mall is never
there when you need them.

In Florida where I go for the winter there is always someone in the
handicapped spot at the tennis complex and then they go to play tennis. I
used to be a tennis player and am always at the courts watching or helping
the captain on my former team and I dont have a spot to park in. Cant do
anything about it because there is a placard. Usually I leave a note to say
if you are playing tennis then you shouldn't be in this spot.I feel like
the parking spot commando.

Such is life,Rosalie

Subject: [TMIC] Dr. Visit Brings Hope

This is the first time in 4 years that I have spoken to a medical
professional who understood
everything, it seemed.

Let's begin with access: his nursed pushed me along the carpet --- carpet is
a shoulder buster and most folks just watch me ache and struggle.

His office had a table that i could transfer to. First one I've seen in four
years.
He ordered tests no one had suggested:
bone density
pulmonary function
ultrasound of kidneys
because sitting in a char affects all of these

He's WORKING ON GETTING ME AN IN HOME THERAPIST

When i pulled out the STANDER literature he praised me-- yes that was
something he envisioned me using to prevent osteo_ something.

I told him about the Flexiciser, he waited for me to follow him (uber points
for that, too, treating me
like I am a grown up who can go from point a to b) and showed me something
VERY similar,
a leg moving machine.

Then show me the heated hydro therapy pool that i could lowered into--- if i
could get transport there, which i can't with regularity SO he said
our goal is to get me driving
and help me transfer into my car

Why don't all doctors have dentist chair type tables? In that they go low
enough for someone
from a wheelchair could possibly get on.

He said where we are is backwards and that he had brought that table with
him.

I think i love this guy-- who SHOOK MY HAND.
which just reminded me how i have not been treated well at all, but maybe
this time
I can really be on the road to help and healing.

He praised me and celebrated me saying he was delighted to have a patient
who was motivated.
He had read my file and knew i was a vegetarian and fodd conscious and so
understood my desire
to lose weight was about raising metabolism, not telling me about not
eating stuff that hasn't touched my lips for 40 years.

I left with 3 appointments already set up for me--- this has never happened
before
my last blood test was at my OWN insistence. I think I've found a REAL
DOCTOR.
My bus driver, who I like a lot (but hadn't been getting because his firm
declined
medical rides for a time) knew this doctor and also praised him.

had surgery 9/18 and went to rehab 9/19. The surgery placed pins

in my rigtht ankle which I broke on both sides. Am home as of Sat 10/2

This is not all bad news. I've not shared what's been happening to me

since Feb...at that time I had an illness, not flu,but flu-like. My

said it most likely was a virus that would wear out in time. I was down

long enough that I began to lose some of my mobility. On the other hand

I began to regain feelings that hadn't been there since tm came to stay
(19996). I wondered if the pains I began to have were there all along, but
I couldn't feel them. As I lost more mobility, I came to depend more and
more on my 4 prong and my walker. My walker was part of reason I broke my
anklethat and my clumsiness!!

With rehab I have begun to regain the strength I'll need to become a member
of walking wounded again. Home Care, esp.p.t., will continue for at least
next 60 days.

Todd that is very interesting. I also have the horrible freezing/burning in
the feet all the time, plus the pins and needles. However, I have checked
and my feet are not and do not get swollen. I have noticed that the pain is
more severe when I am just sitting and resting. When I am up and about,
there is no freezing/burning. At least it is so little, it doesn't bother
me. Also, I have noticed that if I reach down and hold my feet tight, again
no freezing/burning. But, I sure can't sit in that position for long. That
does goes to show, we all have TM, but it affects all of us in a different

RE: [TMIC] New to TM

2010-09-16 Thread Patricia Cooley

Welcome to our site. I am sorry it took TM to find us. I too have
Idiopathic TM. I was DX in June of 2008. I was in the hospital for 5 weeks
and was given Prednisone with there and was sent home with a script of oral
prednisone to start weaning. The TM affected my legs and of course the
bladder and bowels. I had PT while there and then continued when I got
home. I have since progressed to where I am able to get around the house
with walker/cane, but do need a walker to my electric scooter when I go to
any activity that requires a lot of walking.

This group is also for the spouses or care givers. There are no questions
that you cannot ask. We are all here for you and your hubby.

Take care and give our best to your hubby.

Hi Everyone,

My husband has recently (September 2nd) been diagnosed with Idiopathic TM.
He was treated at Pennsylvania Hospital under the care of a team of
Neurologists. He was given mega doses of Prednisone and is currently
weaning with oral prednisone. He was discharged from the hospital last
Thursday and he is now working hard at an acute rehabilitation center (3-5
hours each day). He has a very positive outlook and is taking it one day
at a time.

My question is this..is there a support group for spouses of TM?

Before the U.S. had prescription insurance for social security people, we
always bought my husband's scripts from Canada with no problem. There are
several internet sites for Canadian pharmacies. Just google Canada
pharmacies. At that time, the prices we about half what we would have paid
in the U.S. We also had a local office that you could place your scripts.
It is worth a try.

Can a US doctor prescribe a drug only available in Canada and the UK? How
does one buy it then (if not able to go to Canada to purchase it) Can it be

I really don't know. My neurologist in Portland (Maine) says that he writes
Rx to patients who then go to a pharmacy in Canada. My pain MD has no other
US patients.

First of all, the weather has broken and the days start at 45
degrees and go to the 80's, so I am not having as many symptom problems with
my TM.

Then, I got a phone call from a company I have done work for
before and we (my wife and I) were offered a full-time job with benefits
which will be doing audits for insurance policies. The best part is that it
will all be done by phone and internet from home! And the starting pay of
$30K/year will be a real blessing. That plus what I earn at the church means
we can now get ourselves back out of debt and start saving money again. The
company has been around for 80 years so they are stable. And the work is
such that it will continue even in a bad economy. Hooray!

Hope you all are having a great day as well.

StemCells, Inc. Reports Breakthrough Using Human Neural Stem Cells to Restore
Motor Function in Chronic Spinal Cord Injury

Newly Published Study Shows Long-Term Reversal of Hind Limb Paralysis in Spinal
Cord Injured Mice

PALO ALTO, Calif., Aug 19, 2010 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) --

StemCells, Inc. (Nasdaq:STEM) announced today the publication of new
preclinical data demonstrating that the Company's proprietary human neural stem
cells restore lost motor function in mice with chronic spinal cord injury. This
is the first published study to show that human neural stem cells can restore
mobility even when administered at time points beyond the acute phase of
trauma, suggesting the prospect of treating a much broader population of
injured patients than previously demonstrated. This groundbreaking study,
entitled Human Neural Stem Cells Differentiate and Promote Locomotor Recovery
in an Early Chronic Spinal Cord Injury NOD-scid Mouse Model, was led by Dr.
Aileen Anderson of the Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center at the
University of California, Irvine (UCI). The paper was published yesterday in
the international peer-reviewed journal PLoS ONE, and is available online at
http://dx.plos.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0012272.

In this latest study, StemCells' human neural stem cells were transplanted into
mice 30 days after a spinal cord injury that results in hind limb paralysis.
The transplanted mice demonstrated a significant and persistent recovery of
walking ability in two separate tests of motor function when compared to
control groups. These results are particularly significant because it is the
first time that human neural stem cells have been shown to promote functional
recovery in a chronic spinal cord injury setting, which is characterized as a
point in time after injury in which inflammation has stabilized and behavioral
recovery has reached a plateau. In humans, the chronic phase typically does not
set in until several weeks or months following the injury.

These exciting results demonstrate an expanded window of opportunity for human
neural stem cell intervention in spinal cord injury, stated Stephen Huhn, MD,
FACS, FAAP, Vice President and Head of the CNS Program at StemCells, Inc. 1.3
million individuals in the U.S. are living with chronic spinal cord injury, and
this latest study provides additional evidence that the use of our human neural
stem cells may be a viable treatment approach for them. The strong preclinical
data we have accumulated to date will enable our transition to a clinical
trial, which we plan to initiate in 2011.

Aileen Anderson, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Departments of Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Anatomy and Neurobiology at UCI, added, Human
neural stem cells are a novel therapeutic approach that holds much promise for
spinal cord injury. However, published research to date has generally focused
on the acute and sub-acute phases. As part of our long-standing collaboration
with StemCells, we have pursued a thoughtful and deliberate research strategy
to establish the groundwork necessary to advance this cell-based approach into
the clinic. This latest study builds on the extensive work we had previously
published in the sub-acute phase of injury, and offers additional hope to those
who are paralyzed or have impaired motor function.

Patti, you may also want to make a sheet on all the meds you are on. Also, the
vitamins and supplements that you may be taking.

I keep an Excel spreadsheet so that I can change dosages and add or delete meds
as needed. I also list the dates of start/end, plus the Dr. info.

This is much easier as I have found that on every visit, the questionaire asks
for current meds. This way, I print the list before the visit and just say
See attached. Much Much easier!

am so sorry to hear about your fall in WalMart. Besides painful, my first
thought is always, I hope no one saw me, which is really stupid. I always
use the store electric cart, especially at the big stores as I know I would
be exhausted by the time I was through.

The only good thing that came out of TM for me is that in the beginning when
I was so very depressed and before I found you all, I lost over 50 pounds.
I have been trying to lose the weight for as long as I can remember. I try
very hard to keep it off, now that I am not depressed as much. It is so
hard to lose weight when you can't do much in the way of exercise that would
help to lose the weight. For me my left leg is the strongest, which doesn't
say much.

Take care all.

A month or so ago I had a span when I was pretty strong.I went to HyVee
and walked the cart like you did. I was so proud. Now I am in a
recession and not

strong enough to do it again. My right leg has decided to weaken. We
are not sure why - could be a ham string, but after a session of PT it was
much better, then

all of a sudden, it went weak. Anything like that happen to you - or

I usually have my daughter Lynn do my grocery shopping since the store

One of the very important things to take note of is that often - for
disinfecting purposes - it is not the 3 percent off the shelf H202 that is
being used. It is the 35 percent food grade that is used for hot tubs,
cutting boards etc. You dilute it down, but not to 3%. 35% burns burns
burns! However, for mouth rinses, yes use 3%. We - at the health food
store where I work - actually had to quit selling it to one woman because
she would bathe in the 35% so much that her skin was turning white. (She
was from Columbia) She was also drinking a very diluted amount.

Moderation, Education, and above all Common Sense!

Found most of the uses interesting, but as a nurse I have to tell you I
would no sooner use peroxide on a wound than bleach. Peroxide can cause
damage to surrounding healthy tissues and actually slow healing. For me
good old soap and water work the best.

Clorox vs Peroxide VERY interesting and inexpensive. This was written by
Becky Ransey of Indiana
(a doctor's Wife), and I want to share it with you. She was over recently
for coffee and smelled the bleach I was using to clean my toilet and counter
tops. This is what she told me. 'I would like to tell you of the benefits of
that Plain little ole bottle of 3% peroxide you can get for under $1.00 at
any drug store. What does bleach cost?

My husband has been in the medical field for over 36 years, And most doctors
don't tell you about peroxide. Have you Ever smelled bleach in a doctor's
office? NO!!!

Why? Because it smells, and it is not healthy! Ask the nurses who work in
the doctor's offices, and ask them if they use bleach at home. They are
wiser and know better!

Did you also know bleach was invented in the late 40's? It's chlorine,
folks! And it was used to kill our Troops. Peroxide was invented during WWI
in the 20's. It was used to save and help cleanse the needs of our troops
and hospitals.

Please think about this:
1. Take one capful (the little white cap that comes with the bottle) and
hold in your mouth for 10 minutes daily, then spit it out. (I do it when I
bathe.) No more canker sores, and your teeth will be whiter without
expensive pastes. Use it instead of mouthwash.

2. Let your toothbrushes soak in a cup of peroxide to keep them free of
germs.

3. Clean your counters and table tops with peroxide to kill germs and leave
a fresh smell. Simply put a little on your dishrag when you wipe, or spray
it on the counters.

4. After rinsing off your wooden cutting board, pour peroxide on it to kill
salmonella and other bacteria.

5. I had fungus on my feet for years until I sprayed a 50/50 mixture of
peroxide and water on them (especially the toes) every night and let dry.

6. Soak any infections or cuts in
3% peroxide for five to ten minutes several times a day. My husband has seen
gangrene that would not heal with any medicine but was healed by soaking in
peroxide.

7. Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and Water and keep
it in every bathroom to disinfect without Harming your septic system like
bleach or most other Disinfectants will.

8. Tilt your head back and spray into nostrils with your 50/50 mixture
whenever you have a cold, plugged sinus. It will bubble and help to kill the
bacteria. Hold for a few minutes, and then blow your nose into a tissue.

9. If you have a terrible toothache and cannot get to a dentist right away,
put a capful of 3% peroxide into your mouth and hold it for ten minutes
several times a day. The pain will lessen greatly.

10. And of course, if you like a natural look to your hair, spray the 50/50
solution on your wet hair after a shower and comb it through. You will not
have the peroxide-burnt blonde hair like the hair dye packages but more
natural highlights if your hair is a light brown, reddish, or dirty blonde.
It also lightens gradually, so it's not a drastic change.

11. Put half a bottle of peroxide in your bath to help get rid of boils,
fungus, or other skin infections.

12. You can also add a cup of peroxide instead of bleach to a

I was just sttin here the other day lookin at something I got from
another Marine. I had a though about lookin up my old DI's. I typed in thier
names in my search engine, and came up with only one, Sgt. Levesque. It was
a story about what happened to him in Viet Nam. I called John Brown who is
the commander of the VA, who also worked with me at the Sheriff's dept. yes,
he's from Youngstown. It seems Sgt. Levesque works with the blind veterans,
as he lost his eye sight in Viet Nam. John told me how to get in touch with
him, so I called. He answered, Don Levesque, how can I help you? Here's a
man I haven't seen or talked to in forty eight years, and I got the feeling
of needing to snap to, but I didn't . I said, Platton 289, F Co. Parris
Island. He said, yeah, my platoon. I said Pvt. Boyle, Platoon Guide. He
said, son of a bitch, how the hell are ya. I said, the question is, how are
you, I read a story about you and losing your eye sight. He said, ya know
Boyle, I remember you, you had your head and ass wired together..After
exchanging pleasantries, we discussed disabilities, and I told him my story.
He said, remember one thing Boyle, it's ability, not disability, if I taught
you anything, remember that. We talked a couple more minutes then agreed to
stay in contact.

It got to me people, ability not disablilty. I had to hear that from an old
DI of mine, so, I'm just passin it on. Semper Fi.
