Never Forgive A Traitor For those of you too young to remember Hanoi Jane is a bad person and did some terrible things during the Vietnam war. Things that can not be forgiven For those who served and/or died. . . NEVER FORGIVE A TRAITOR. SHE REALLY WAS A TRAITOR!! and now OBAMA wants to honor her.. In Memory of LT. C.Thomsen Wieland who spent 100 days at the Hanoi Hilton IF YOU NEVER FORWARDED ANYTHING IN YOUR LIFE FORWARD THIS SO THAT EVERYONE WILL KNOW!! She really is a traitor. A TRAITOR IS ABOUT TO BE HONORED KEEP THIS MOVING ACROSS AMERICA This is for all the kids born in the 70's and after who do not remember, and didn't have to bear the burden that our fathers, mothers and older brothers and sisters had to bear.. Jane Fonda is being honored as one of the '100 Women of the Century.' BARBRA WALTERS WRITES: Unfortunately, many have forgotten and still countless others have never known how Ms. Fonda betrayed not only the idea of our country, but specific men who served and sacrificed during Vietnam The first part of this is from an F-4E pilot. The pilot's name is Jerry Driscoll, a River Rat. In 1968, the former Commandant of the USAF Survival School was a POW in Ho Lo Prison the ' Hanoi Hilton.' Dragged from a stinking cesspit of a cell, cleaned, fed, and dressed in clean PJ's, he was ordered to describe for a visiting American 'Peace Activist' the 'lenient and humane treatment' he'd received. He spat at Ms. Fonda, was clubbed, and was dragged away. During the subsequent beating, he fell forward on to the camp Commandant 's feet, which sent that officer berserk. In 1978, the Air Force Colonel still suffered from double vision (which permanently ended his flying career) from the Commandant's frenzied application of a wooden baton. From 1963-65, Col. Larry Carrigan was in the 47FW/DO (F-4E's). He spent 6 years in the ' Hanoi Hilton',,, the first three of which his family only knew he was 'missing in action'. His wife lived on faith that he was still alive. His group, too, got the cleaned-up, fed and clothed routine in preparation for a 'peace delegation' visit. They, however, had time and devised a plan to get word to the world that they were alive and still survived. Each man secreted a tiny piece of paper, with his Social Security Number on it , in the palm of his hand. When paraded before Ms. Fonda and a cameraman, she walked the line, shaking each man's hand and asking little encouraging snippets like: 'Aren't you sorry you bombed babies?' and 'Are you grateful for the humane treatment from your benevolent captors?' Believing this HAD to be an act, they each palmed her their sliver of paper. She took them all without missing a beat.. At the end of the line and once the camera stopped rolling, to the shocked disbelief of the POWs, she turned to the officer in charge and handed him all the little pieces of paper.. Three men died from the subsequent beatings. Colonel Carrigan was almost number four but he survived, which is the only reason we know of her actions that day. I was a civilian economic development advisor in Vietnam , and was captured by the North Vietnamese communists in South Vietnam in 1968, and held prisoner for over 5 years. RE: [TMIC] Bladder/Spasms
Janice I don’t have leg spasms but if I am sitting or it has been a while since I made a trip to the bathroom, I get a pain in the area just above the pubic bone. That tells me it has been sometime since I went potty. The pain also wakes me at night so again I go. I have noticed that when I am going the pain slowly goes away, and by the time I have emptied my bladder the pain is gone. That has been happening for about the past year, and my urologist is aware of it and is not concerned. I believe that maybe some nerves are now coming alive, and least I hope so. Again these are things that were never done for me in the five years of TM paralysis. Thanks again, for chiming in! That we heal and that all be well, Akua So familiar--my wife does my pt because I cannot afford $1600/day for a live in PT facility that was prescribed for me. I know all about the buzzing--I call it humming in my feet and the stronger thrumming in my legs. But my wife found a solution for feet jumping off the wheel chair. I use a regular chair in the house and she uses a velcro back brace (the kind with no shoulder straps) and wraps it around the legs of the wheel chair and my legs. Works! I also have a Jazzy electric wheel chair that we bought second hand from Craigs List for a $1000 that I use for outdoor activities like my grandsons ball games and trips to Cost Co. Here's the neat part. She screwed a pair of sandals onto foot rest of the Jazzy and straps my feet in so they can't jump out. We also bought a pedal machine and she put sandals on that as well because my feet wouldn't stay on it. $100 for the pedal machine 25 for the slippers. It moves my legs for me and I am now doing 30 minutes at top speed twice a day. It will keep your legs from shrinking. I also contacted Redman about a standup electric wheel chair and found it cost $28,000. I passed. Jim -- --

I had a partial knee replacement - Avon - on my right knee on March 26, 2009. It was the best thing I did! I had severe arthritis and bone on bone. So at 47 years of age, my doctor suggested the Avon partial replacement. Before my surgery I was very limited to what I could do. I was to minimize the amount of walking and avoid stairs. The only exercise I was permitted was swimming and golf if I took a cart. I was in constant pain. When I woke from surgery, my knee ached. But within a few hours after the surgery, I literally had no pain at all. The nurses would not believe me so I had to lie and tell them that my pain level was around 3 on a scale of 1 to 10. That seemed to make them happy and they would leave me alone and not try to force pain meds on me. My surgery was at 1:00 PM on Thursday and I spent the day in bed. On friday morning, they removed my catheter and I used the walker twice, once to get to washroom to wash up and the second time to actually use the washroom. After that I was on crutches. Because of the 14 surgeries I had on my right knee prior to the partial replacement, I had a great deal of scar tissue which hampered my mobility. I relied on my crutches for 10 weeks and then went to a cane for almost 4 weeks. I have full mobility and aside from a squeek I have absolutely no pain. Best thing I ever did. I am not sure if that had anything to do with the pain issue, but I don't think so. I think it's due to the fact that I don't walk well and that I wouldn't be able to do the rehab as well or in the same manner as somebody who is walking much better. I know that they keep you comfortable with pain meds, but I went through plenty with my shoulder, needing to put pressure on it just to be able to ambulate about a little. I still needed to get back and forth to the bathroom, on and off a toilet, etc and that's just the minimum. Wow, it seems like a double replacement is rather common. RE: [TMIC] REHAB
Dalton, you are so right. I am older than most of the TMers, and I remember most of my friends had a grandma and/or grandpa as part of the family. My grandparents were gone before I was born, but my husband's family took care of the grandparents until the end. My husband and I moved to Waupaca, WI so we could be near my daughter and her family. We live separately but together. We live in a house where an apartment is joined by a breeze way to the main house where my husband and I live. I get to see my beautiful granddaughters each day, my daughter is nearby in case of an emergency. So far no emergencies, thank God. I agree that this country has lost its way over the years. I think part of it is the fact that families don't live in the same community, but are all over the country so family is unable to give help when needed. Also, the fact that both husband and wife must work and are stretched so thin as far as time is concerned. I don't know the answer to this problem. It has been going on for so many years our current generations are conditioned to think only of themselves. I can only pray for the future of this nation. I had to move to Texas for work. She was very sharp while she could still read, until at aged 102, the cataract pealing surgery changed her nervous system and did not improve her vision. After that, she couldn't read about Nixon and his cronies and she lost interest in things. When I saw her the staff had shifted treatment for her from some level of respect to simply tying her in a wheelchair with a crapper pan under it, keeping her doped up all day, nodding her head this way and that, so she wouldn't be any trouble for maybe eight hours. My grandmother, who used to be so fierce well into her 90's she had us all scared and paying attention, now like a baby with grey hair, on the nod from the dope they gave her. I put my hand on her dear head and said some prayers. Then I had to go; our mother would see her during the months to follow. She died at 105. That was in 1989. I can't adjust to the disrespect they show to the old and disabled in America. Some of it America brought on itself, with all those notions of the nuclear family and labor mobility. Like most of my friends when I was a kid, we lived in a house with three generations in it, the grandparents in their rooms on the second floor, my parents down the hall, and we kids in another room. Back then people were able to hang on to jobs, or if not jobs, at least stay with the same company. The company had a personal relationship with the worker if he or she was lucky and the company was good. But there were good companies then, who tried to keep things going and all their labor force in work as long as possible. But my wife and our daughter lived in Florida after moving from Texas; and our mother was in Massachusetts, my sister and her family were in New York, and my brother's family lived in Connecticut. My cousins' families were in Colorado. My wife's parents were in Vermont. Now I live in Abu Dhabi. My present and future wife, Qian-her parents are in Chengdu, central China. When did America stop being a family and start being a team? Teams are different than families. Teams bench the weak ones, and when they don't improve, or are no longer capable of playing the game up to snuff, they are let go. Families, on the other hand, nurse the weak back to health and business, raise the little ones, and take care of their old, who have now become unable to compete as before. Nursing homes would be staffed by our own neighbors, who take care of Mrs. Johnson because she taught some of the staff in fifth grade; and Stan Kopek mowed our lawns and was a vet of the Pacific Theater in World War II. Any complaints would arouse the interest of the Congregational Church's Reverend, the Baptist Church's pastor, the synagogue's Rabbi, or St. Bridges' Catholic priest maybe. They'd have a few words with the nursing home's management and that would take care of it. American management and our government now think of themselves as a team, with the people representing an inexhaustible source of interchangeable workers that can be added or subtracted at will, who do not represent any responsibility for the firm in terms of the workers' family needs. I don't have a warm and fuzzy feeling for Team America. Sounds too much like living as the people in that old movie, Metropolis, had to live. That's why our nursing homes pay staff starvation wages a lot of the time, who don't generally have the interest of the patient on
RE: [TMIC] REHAB
I think the reason I was very happy with my care when I was in rehab was because I was at a hospital Not Nursing Home/Rehab facility. We all know that nursing home care sucks big time. There was always enough equipment and tables to work on. My P.T. was scheduled at a hour at a time twice a day, and I always had the same therapist except for weekends. Even the weekend people were wonderful. It sounds as though it depends are where you live and what is available to you. I was fortunate that I lived near large hospitals. Patti From: Akua [mailto:a...@artfarm.com] Sent: Tuesday, January 04, 2011 4:07 PM To: tmic-list@eskimo.com Subject: [TMIC] REHAB As some of the other TM'ers have found out when being in a skilled nursing/rehab facility and required more care than others - you don't always get it. Another thing that makes me angry on reflection is that , though i was paralyzed and had TM, I was a lot less work than a lot of other patients. I was younger than 95% of the other residents, I could communicate. I was easy to contain and maintain from a nursing standpoint. They only had to help me move from place to place and teach me how to move. Having upper body meant that no one had to feed me or dress me or wash me -- they just had to get me to the food or the shower. If they were better resourced, my falling in the shower wouldn't have happened-- that happened with an unassisted transfer from a wet shower bench into a sliding wheel chair (I'm falling i said as the aide stood and watched me fall) at home as in the hospital -- i don't do wet transfers-- I use a shower wheelchair so no more going from wet to wet. One of the things I would love to fix is nursing homes think tank? Lobby? there's a guy who has developed new kind of community for nursing homes, healthy... but they are few and far between and require $. for me the prison analogy holds --- people are supposed to be rehabilitated, but they are most often warehoused. -- When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. RE: [TMIC] REHAB
Your experience sounds like a time spent in HELL. It is unfortunate that there are so many places like that in this country. People who have family or friends that can monitor their care are the lucky ones. Even hospitals lack proper care at times. I remember when my husband was in the hospital for colon surgery and when I was walking down the hall to the restroom, I noticed a patient in bed completely naked and no curtain was closed. They were trying to reach behind them to pull up a sheet. I complained to my husband's doctor but was afraid that if I complained to the nursing staff my husband's care would suffer. When I was first dx with TM, the first hospital was a pit. The people were nice enough, but the food I won't feed to a dog. After a week, I was transferred to their larger hospital that had a rehab floor, mostly for people who had knee and hip replacement. My nurses and P.T. people couldn't have been nicer or more capable. Even the people who came in to clean were all so caring. I was there for over 4 weeks, and my room was the place they all spent their breaks. I was so glad to go home, but in one way I hated leaving all the wonderful care givers I had. RE: RE: [TMIC] A Bad Fall
Todd I did the same thing about 6 weeks after I got home from the hospital. I was at the computer paying some bills. When I finished, I got up to go to the bathroom and completely forgot that I couldn’t walk. Needless to say, I landed flat on my face. Fortunately, I didn’t hurt myself, but I thought okay how do I get up since my hubby was outside cutting the grass. I was lucky that my P.T. therapist showed me what to do in case I would fall. As I was going down all I could think was oh s__t! Well, what she showed me worked. I have gone down at least 2 more times, but I have been lucky that all I bruised was my self esteem. I didn't even know I'd done it! We stretch to help manage the spacticity, right. Well, I finally went to a podiatrist when my left ankle had been hurting worse and worse. He told me I had TORN my Achilles tendon! Apparently, I had gradually stretched it too much and it had torn 33%! It healed in a few months, but still hurts almost as much as before it healed. Now they tell me I have Sural Nerve Neuritis - apparently from scar tissue pressing on the nerve??? Good news is that the Podiatrist recommended Lyrica, which just happens to also be good for spacticity, too. I've only been on it a couple of weeks but it seems to be helping. Bottom line is, PLEASE BE CAREFUL NOT TO OVERSTRETCH! Apparently, b/c of the spacticity, there's not as much give as there normally would be, and it facilitated the tear. And even more, it's the exact pain I've had in my hip (thigh) for 4 years, which they decided was from overcompensating for my right leg which was the one most affected by the TM. But the podiatrist agreed that if I could tear at the ankle, I could well have torn a tendon in my thigh/hip. It all makes sense b/c someone had talked me into doing some extreme stretches shortly after the initial TM, thinking that would help me. At the time I didn't have too much feeling in that leg and didn't notice how bad it was until my feeling improved! But I'm pretty sure, now, that that was what caused this sciatica-like pain, too. I've been wanting to post about this to warn others about overstretching. (I tend to easily go to extremes! It's keeping that balance; being 'moderate' that I have a problem with. And now I'm paying for it! :) Happy New Year, Sally I had a hamstring problem too. Therapists had me doing lots of stretching and I am back to normal (if you can call TM normal) now. I take maybe 800 mg to 1200 mg/day, depending on how much calcium foods I've eaten. If my legs start to spasm, I know I didn't take enough and get up and take some. (Calcium is more effective if taken in smaller doses - i.e. 400mg - throughout the day, rather than all at once.) My calcium levels were good before I was given the 5000 mg methyl-prednisone to zap the myelitis, but that zapped the calcium, too. The point I'm making is how differently TMers function. My pain is a five and I seem to handle it without pain meds, just Neurontin. And I'm not even sure Neurontin really helps. But I need a walker when I'm out. Sometimes I wonder if I would be willing to trade her pain with going shopping without needing a walker, or holding on to somebody's arm. Maybe. Maybe not. RE: [TMIC] question
Barbara my husband had double knee replacement in 2006. Whatever pain he had must not have been too bad as he didn’t complain. I think the one thing that made it easier for him is doing your pre-surgery exercised to strengthen leg muscles. A month before surgery he a given a 3-ring binder with all the excises listed. He did them faithfully all day so his body was ready for the demand surgery would put on his legs. In fact, he only went to P.T. for about 3-4 weeks, as they said they couldn’t do any more for him and Medicare wouldn’t pay for it any more. He was driving again in less than 4 weeks. Of course, he didn’t have any other health problems, which might make a big difference. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. I'm only 59, so figure if I can put it off for awhile, I will. As much as I walk, I'll probably never wear it out. I was actually on schedule for a knee replacement last year when I asked to see a physical therapist in order to best improve the strength in my body so I could get through the rehab in the best way possible. The therapist told me that the knee is no walk in the park. It is extremely painful, after the surgery, but especially the rehab. I don't understand what you mean about rehab differently. From what I understand, and I really didn't go into it all the way, you have exercises and walking. He told me that a very painful part is straightening the knee, as it will want to be bent to be in less pain, but not good since you develop scar tissue very quickly and if not careful, you will not be able to straighten it fully. I had a couple of visits and from the exercises that I was doing for my legs I no longer had the pain that I was having. At the time I also was having a lot of pain with my shoulder over for a year and a half at that point, so knew it would be extra painful on the shoulder. I use canadian crutches or a rolling walker to get around, and the orthopedic surgeon says that I walk on my shoulders, lol. I had rotator cuff surgery and a bone spur removed two months ago and am no longer in pain there, so when I really need the knee, I'll hopefully be in better shape. SCIENTISTS TURN SKIN CELLS DIRECTLY INTO BLOOD CELLS - WITHOUT USING EMBRYOS - Step aside stem-cell research. Step aside Dr. Connors and his use of lizard DNA to regrow human tissue (a Spiderman thing). A group of Canadian researchers have successfully produced red blood cells straight from adult skin cells. Not only did these scientists trick human skin cells into becoming blood cells, but no stem cells were harmed in the making of the experiment. Stem cell research has long held hope for those suffering from major degenerative diseases. By infusing healthy stem cells into the pancreas of diabetics or the heart muscle of heart-attack victims or the brains of people with Parkinson's disease, researchers have hoped to replace degenerating tissue with healthy tissue that can grow and regenerate patients back to health. Now, researchers have found a method to completely skip the stem cell stage through a process called direct conversion and turn one kind of adult cell into another. Stem-cell researchers at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, published their findings in the November 25, 2010 edition of Nature, describing their success in taking fibroblast cells from human skin and converting them into the progenitors for red blood cells. Mickie Bhatia and his fellow researchers faced the same problem many researchers face when working with stem cells; the cells want to act like embryonic cells. Those cells, because they think they're embryonic, make embryonic and fetal blood, Bhatia said. Adults do not need embryonic hemoglobin in their blood. They need grown-up hemoglobin. Bhatia and his team decided that they therefore needed to find a method of taking adult cells and converting them into the adult red blood cells they wanted. The researchers infected the fibroblast cells with a virus that inserts OCT4 gene into them. This would normally transform the fibroblasts into induced pluripotent stem cells (IPS) – cells able to turn into anything. However, after encouraging the cells to grow and reproduce in a cocktail of regulatory proteins, researchers found that the cells developed into blood progenitor cells without first turning into IPS intermediate cells. IPS cells tend to cause tumors, which means there's an advantage in avoiding IPS cells as the middle man. The team had success; the blood progenitor cells produced functioning white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets – of the adult variety. Direct conversion researcher John Gearhart of the University of Pennsylvania told the Associated Press, This is something that's really caught fire because it's an easy strategy to use. Everyone's out there trying their different combinations (of chemical signals) to see if they can succeed. Still, Gearhart cautioned the public to not get too excited too fast. The direct conversion technology is new and requires a great deal more research before it can be ready for testing on human patients. There are many unknowns regarding how these cells will actually act in the human body. We do not want to put red blood cells in a human being and find that those cells want to act like skin cells after all. We're a long way from showing safety and efficacy for any of these things, Gearhart said. This stuff is all so new that we have a lot of work to do. There is great hope that new techniques like this will provide the field of regenerative medicine with options that avoid the moral and ethical (and medical) problems associated with embryonic stem cell research. Dr. David Prentice, a former Indiana State University biology professor who is now a fellow at the Family Research Council said the success of the technique exposes the failure of unethical, unsafe embryonic stem cell research, rather than the usual hype associated with embryo research. Direct conversion offers an ethical way forward, and may even be one mechanism by which adult stem cells are producing current successes in patients.
[TMIC] Med Question
On Thursday I saw a new doctor, a physiatrist (sp), that my neuro recommended. I am very impressed with him and his care which was very thorough. When I mentioned my freezing/burning and pain n my feet, he gave me a script for gabapentin. My previous neuro always said there was nothing I could take. I know many of who have mentioned it previously. I took my first capsule last night when I went to bed. This morning I feel so groggy, like I had a night on the town last night. Is that common? Will it go away after I am on it for a while? Maybe I should take it earlier in the evening so the affect wears off by morning. He has also recommend that I saw a ortho who will evaluate me to see if a brace on my bad leg would help with my balance and walking. If it helps, I am game for anything. Thank you in advance for any advice you can give me. Patti - Wisconsin

Thank you, Jude. Your post is my first Christmas present of the year. We have all been missing you and praying that you will be up to posting again very soon. I miss Pam so much like you. In fact, I have saved; many of the jokes she sent shorting before her death. I go back and read them whenever I need a lift. While doing so, I can almost hear her laugh Like you a lot of our everyday living falls on my husband. I am able to get around the house o.k., and I am able to do things like the laundry, cooking, some cleaning, but all the rest falls on my husband. We are both lucky to have such wonderful men in our lives. I will be looking forward to hearing from you more often. I hope you have a very Merry Christmas! No reason why, except that maybe I needed a break from all of the talk of the “blusey” side of the disease. I try to maintain a positive attitude, but since the death of my best TM friend, Pam Montz, I needed a long break before I could once more become an active participant of the group like I used to be. For new members, I have had TM for somewhat more than eight years, can’t recall due to memory dysfunction, and other related symptoms of TM, for one being a difficulty in typing, where I used to be a whiz...maybe just a matter of continuing to do it on a regular basis. I am paralyzed from T3 (breast level with the use of my arms, Thank God.) I have horrible continuous pain from T3 on the Spinal Column to the tips of my toes. I am not able to walk, use a wheelchair to get around and spend a lot of time in bed just because of laziness. We have no children and do not have a large social group and no family to speak of. My husband wanted property so we moved out of our living area where we had resided forever, to a small, and I mean “small” village where we have 5 acres and a nice two story home, which we bought before I became ill. Now, the house makes no sense whatsoever and I am able to use only a small portion of it; my bedroom, which used to be the den, the kitchen/dining area and living room. I have spent so long in my bedroom that I have forgotten what the rest of the house looks like. It’s either that or the memory difficulties which I just two days ago began taking meds to, hopefully, reverse the dysfunction. OK, that’s all I can muster for my first time back. What’s going on with all of my old friends? Let me know. I love you all, Jude Anyway, I make use of the three rooms, but my husband does all of the cooking and eats in my room with me, and he takes care of all of the remaining household chores that I cannot do because of the constant intense pain I experience 24/7. I have pain meds, but hate to take them because they turn me into a “zombie” and it affects most of my “normal” human existence, as it is. Most of you know what I mean, the rest of you will catch on the longer you have TM and continue to read these excerpts.

He also said that the anomalies in the brainstem the New York drs noted was also caused by Transverse Myelitis and is affecting my arms, hands and everything below. He also said that I did indeed have Transverse Myelitis, and that it affected my upper spine and everything below. Now, the goal is management, because it has affected things so that the fusions and metal, which have always affected the circulatory system in the spine, can make the TM act up. Any change causes the spinal cord and associated nerves to swell up hours later and give me problems for days. This is the TM effect; and I will need to deal with it from now on. I am very happy since the pain is mostly easy except for days following any stress or exertion, I can walk and go to work and do my job. So, I am very satisfied with the results. We recorded a song called Rama Lama Ding Dong. Anyway, I was talkin with Harry Green (2nd Tenor), and Marshall Sewel (Bass) the other night, and we discussed George (Wydell) Jones who passed away two years ago. George was the lead singer with us. Marshall asked what was wrong with me using a cane, so I told him. He asked if that was anything like Polio and I told him the difference, and started complaining. He said, Ya know, Doc Had Polio. Doc who I asked. He said Doc Pomus who's real name was Jerome Felder. I never met him but Marshall had so he related this story. Doc contracted Polio as a child way back and in his early years, and was confined to a wheel chair. It seems he and his wife were at an awards ceremony where Doc was watching his wife dance with other guys that they of course knew, so Doc penned a song for her as he watched called Save the last dance for me. If anyone here is old enough, the Drifters recorded that back in the early 60's. Check out the Drifters on You Tube, click on save the last dance for me, and listen to the words. Just goes to show what you can do if you set your mind to it. He wrote a ton of other hits also, but this one especially hit home with me. Something I never knew before. I guess we never stop learning.

I think this one will stick with you awhile :) The Cab Ride I arrived at the address and honked the horn. after waiting a few minutes I walked to the door and knocked.. 'Just a minute', answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 90's stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940's movie. By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware. 'Would you carry my bag out to the car?' she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb. She kept thanking me for my kindness. 'It's nothing', I told her.. 'I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother to be treated.' 'Oh, you're such a good boy, she said. When we got in the cab, she gave me an address and then asked, 'Could you drive through downtown?' 'It's not the shortest way ma'am,' I answered quickly.. 'Oh, I don't mind,' she said. 'I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice. I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were glistening. 'I don't have any family left,' she continued in a soft voice.. 'The doctor says I don't have very long.' I quietly reached over and shut off the meter. 'What route would you like me to take?' I asked. For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she'd ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing. As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, 'I'm tired. Let's go now'. We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico. Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move. They must have been expecting her. I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair. 'How much do I owe you?' She asked, reaching into her purse. 'Nothing,' I said 'You have to make a living,' she answered. 'There are other passengers,' I responded. Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly. 'You gave an old woman wonderful moments of joy,' she said. 'Thank you.' I squeezed her hand, then walked into the dim morning light.. Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.. I didn't pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly lost in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away? On a quick review, I don't think that I have done anything more important in my life. We're conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments. But great moments often catch us unaware-beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one. PEOPLE MAY NOT REMEMBER EXACTLY WHAT YOU DID, OR WHAT YOU SAID ~BUT~THEY WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HOW YOU MADE THEM FEEL. You won't get any big surprise in 10 days if you send this to ten people. But, you might help make the world a little kinder and more compassionate by sending. it on and reminding us that often it is the random acts of kindness that most benefit all of us. Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance.

I believe it made (and still makes) all the difference in my attitude towards TM. In fact, many of my friends and family have remarked about it. I have always been one to not look back. I take what I have and go forward and been very good at adapting to my situation. You're right about it being a constant battle. I think we can't disregard the severity of what has happened to us by wishing too hard that we'll recover. I have yet to read from anyone who posts regularly that they've 'miraculously' been cured. There are obviously too few qualified doctors to treat TMers that are unwilling to network with those few who are working hard to find a cure and treatment. If they would all work together and take advantage of our inputs, maybe we could one day see a light at the end of this very long tunnel... what a concept! Unfortunately, when dealing with damaged nerves and the seemingly infinite number of symptoms, it's hard to pinpoint any one treatment - especially when no one remedy works for everyone. They're trying to hit a moving target that's always changing. I share your feelings about your tolerance for others, but I find I'm very touchy now with people who abuse handicapped parking, are impatient with my slowness and difficulty getting my hands to work just to get the right amount of change out of my purse, or not controlling their children or teaching them to give me a little extra berth so they don't kick my cane or cause me to trip. Besides dealing with all the physical TM issues, it's immensely more frustrating once we step outside the 'safety' of our own front door. I figure if I use medication to help treat my physical issues, why wouldn't I use it to help treat my mental/emotional ones? Betty (in Northern California)

RE: [TMIC] handicapped placard
I agree with you what a shame that people act that way. All they would have to do is spend a few days in our condition, then they would realize what having handicapped parking close by means to us. I also have another gripe. In public restrooms, people who use the handicap stall when they don't have to. When out, I use a walker or cane, and cannot use the regular size stall as there isn't enough room to turn your walker around. I use an accessible van and need to get out using the ramp on the passenger side. 3 times this month someone was parked on the stripes adjacent to the parking spot. One time I called the police and he didn't even know how to write a ticket and for what amount ( this is in New York). Ended up they got a tkt for $250. Once was at the library and we found the person. This week in the rain I was at the mall. I had to ask a stranger to pull my car out so I could get into my car. I didn't have time to wait for the police and security at the mall is never there when you need them. In Florida where I go for the winter there is always someone in the handicapped spot at the tennis complex and then they go to play tennis. I used to be a tennis player and am always at the courts watching or helping the captain on my former team and I dont have a spot to park in. Cant do anything about it because there is a placard. Let's begin with access: his nursed pushed me along the carpet --- carpet is a shoulder buster and most folks just watch me ache and struggle. His office had a table that i could transfer to. First one I've seen in four years. He ordered tests no one had suggested: bone density pulmonary function ultrasound of kidneys because sitting in a char affects all of these He's WORKING ON GETTING ME AN IN HOME THERAPIST When i pulled out the STANDER literature he praised me-- yes that was something he envisioned me using to prevent osteo_ something. I told him about the Flexiciser, he waited for me to follow him (uber points for that, too, treating me like I am a grown up who can go from point a to b) and showed me something VERY similar, a leg moving machine. Then show me the heated hydro therapy pool that i could lowered into--- if i could get transport there, which i can't with regularity SO he said our goal is to get me driving and help me transfer into my car Why don't all doctors have dentist chair type tables? In that they go low enough for someone from a wheelchair could possibly get on. He said where we are is backwards and that he had brought that table with him. I think i love this guy-- who SHOOK MY HAND. which just reminded me how i have not been treated well at all, but maybe this time I can really be on the road to help and healing. He praised me and celebrated me saying he was delighted to have a patient who was motivated. He had read my file and knew i was a vegetarian and fodd conscious and so understood my desire to lose weight was about raising metabolism, not telling me about not eating stuff that hasn't touched my lips for 40 years. I left with 3 appointments already set up for me--- this has never happened before my last blood test was at my OWN insistence. I think I've found a REAL DOCTOR. My bus driver, who I like a lot (but hadn't been getting because his firm declined medical rides for a time) knew this doctor and also praised him. Akua --

RE: Re: Fw: Re: [TMIC] Feet Burns
Todd that is very interesting. I also have the horrible freezing/burning in the feet all the time, plus the pins and needles. However, I have checked and my feet are not and do not get swollen. I have noticed that the pain is more severe when I am just sitting and resting. When I am up and about, there is no freezing/burning. At least it is so little, it doesn't bother me. RE: [TMIC] New to TM
Welcome to our site. I am sorry it took TM to find us. I too have Idiopathic TM. I was DX in June of 2008. I was in the hospital for 5 weeks and was given Prednisone with there and was sent home with a script of oral prednisone to start weaning. The TM affected my legs and of course the bladder and bowels. I had PT while there and then continued when I got home. I have since progressed to where I am able to get around the house with walker/cane, but do need a walker to my electric scooter when I go to any activity that requires a lot of walking. This group is also for the spouses or care givers. There are no questions that you cannot ask. We are all here for you and your hubby. Take care and give our best to your hubby. Before the U.S. had prescription insurance for social security people, we always bought my husband's scripts from Canada with no problem. There are several internet sites for Canadian pharmacies. Reports Breakthrough Using Human Neural Stem Cells to Restore Motor Function in Chronic Spinal Cord Injury Newly Published Study Shows Long-Term Reversal of Hind Limb Paralysis in Spinal Cord Injured Mice PALO ALTO, Calif., Aug 19, 2010 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) -- StemCells, Inc. (Nasdaq:STEM) announced today the publication of new preclinical data demonstrating that the Company's proprietary human neural stem cells restore lost motor function in mice with chronic spinal cord injury. This is the first published study to show that human neural stem cells can restore mobility even when administered at time points beyond the acute phase of trauma, suggesting the prospect of treating a much broader population of injured patients than previously demonstrated. This groundbreaking study, entitled Human Neural Stem Cells Differentiate and Promote Locomotor Recovery in an Early Chronic Spinal Cord Injury NOD-scid Mouse Model, was led by Dr. Aileen Anderson of the Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). The paper was published yesterday in the international peer-reviewed journal PLoS ONE, and is available online at http://dx.plos.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0012272. In this latest study, StemCells' human neural stem cells were transplanted into mice 30 days after a spinal cord injury that results in hind limb paralysis. The transplanted mice demonstrated a significant and persistent recovery of walking ability in two separate tests of motor function when compared to control groups. These results are particularly significant because it is the first time that human neural stem cells have been shown to promote functional recovery in a chronic spinal cord injury setting, which is characterized as a point in time after injury in which inflammation has stabilized and behavioral recovery has reached a plateau. In humans, the chronic phase typically does not set in until several weeks or months following the injury. These exciting results demonstrate an expanded window of opportunity for human neural stem cell intervention in spinal cord injury, stated Stephen Huhn, MD, FACS, FAAP, Vice President and Head of the CNS Program at StemCells, Inc. 1.3 million individuals in the U.S. are living with chronic spinal cord injury, and this latest study provides additional evidence that the use of our human neural stem cells may be a viable treatment approach for them. The strong preclinical data we have accumulated to date will enable our transition to a clinical trial, which we plan to initiate in 2011. Aileen Anderson, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Anatomy and Neurobiology at UCI, added, Human neural stem cells are a novel therapeutic approach that holds much promise for spinal cord injury. However, published research to date has generally focused on the acute and sub-acute phases. As part of our long-standing collaboration with StemCells, we have pursued a thoughtful and deliberate research strategy to establish the groundwork necessary to advance this cell-based approach into the clinic. This latest study builds on the extensive work we had previously published in the sub-acute phase of injury, and offers additional hope to those who are paralyzed or have impaired motor function. What would we do without our TM family. My problems are very much like everyone else's. I am also able to get along in the house with cane/walker, as long as I know I have a wall or furniture to touch on the way. Cheryl, I am so sorry to hear about your fall in WalMart. Besides painful, my first thought is always, I hope no one saw me, which is really stupid. I always use the store electric cart, especially at the big stores as I know I would be exhausted by the time I was through. The only good thing that came out of TM for me is that in the beginning when I was so very depressed and before I found you all, I lost over 50 pounds. I have been trying to lose the weight for as long as I can remember. I try very hard to keep it off, now that I am not depressed as much. It is so hard to lose weight when you can't do much in the way of exercise that would help to lose the weight. For me my left leg is the strongest, which doesn't say much. Take care all. RE: [TMIC] Fw: Clorox vs Peroxide.....this is good
I HAVE USED THE 3% MANY TIMES WHEN I HAVE HAD A CUT ON MY FINGER THAT WOULDN'T HEAL BECAUSE I KEPT REOPENING IT ALL THE TIME. IT WORKED EVERY TIME WITHOUT A PROBLEM. I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THAT HAD A STRONGER SOLUTION. It is the 35 percent food grade that is used for hot tubs, cutting boards etc. You dilute it down, but not to 3%. 35% burns burns burns! However, for mouth rinses, yes use 3%. We - at the health food store where I work - actually had to quit selling it to one woman because she would bathe in the 35% so much that her skin was turning white. (She was from Columbia) She was also drinking a very diluted amount. Moderation, Education, and above all Common Sense! Janice - Original Message - Clorox vs Peroxide VERY interesting and inexpensive. This was written by Becky Ransey of Indiana (a doctor's Wife), and I want to share it with you. She was over recently for coffee and smelled the bleach I was using to clean my toilet and counter tops. This is what she told me. 'I would like to tell you of the benefits of that Plain little ole bottle of 3% peroxide you can get for under $1.00 at any drug store. What does bleach cost? My husband has been in the medical field for over 36 years, And most doctors don't tell you about peroxide. Have you Ever smelled bleach in a doctor's office? NO!!! Why? Because it smells, and it is not healthy! Ask the nurses who work in the doctor's offices, and ask them if they use bleach at home. They are wiser and know better! Did you also know bleach was invented in the late 40's? It's chlorine, folks! And it was used to kill our Troops. Peroxide was invented during WWI in the 20's. It was used to save and help cleanse the needs of our troops and hospitals. Please think about this: 1. Take one capful (the little white cap that comes with the bottle) and hold in your mouth for 10 minutes daily, then spit it out. (I do it when I bathe.) No more canker sores, and your teeth will be whiter without expensive pastes. Use it instead of mouthwash. 2. Let your toothbrushes soak in a cup of peroxide to keep them free of germs. 3. Clean your counters and table tops with peroxide to kill germs and leave a fresh smell. Simply put a little on your dishrag when you wipe, or spray it on the counters. 4. After rinsing off your wooden cutting board, pour peroxide on it to kill salmonella and other bacteria. 5. I had fungus on my feet for years until I sprayed a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water on them (especially the toes) every night and let dry. 6. Soak any infections or cuts in 3% peroxide for five to ten minutes several times a day. My husband has seen gangrene that would not heal with any medicine but was healed by soaking in peroxide. 7. Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and Water and keep it in every bathroom to disinfect without Harming your septic system like bleach or most other Disinfectants will. 8. Tilt your head back and spray into nostrils with your 50/50 mixture whenever you have a cold, plugged sinus. It will bubble and help to kill the bacteria. Hold for a few minutes, and then blow your nose into a tissue. 9. If you have a terrible toothache and cannot get to a dentist right away, put a capful of 3% peroxide into your mouth and hold it for ten minutes several times a day. The pain will lessen greatly. 10. And of course, if you like a natural look to your hair, spray the 50/50 solution on your wet hair after a shower and comb it through. You will not have the peroxide-burnt blonde hair like the hair dye packages but more natural highlights if your hair is a light brown, reddish, or dirty blonde. It also lightens gradually, so it's not a drastic change. 11. Put half a bottle of peroxide in your bath to help get rid of boils, fungus, or other skin infections. 12. You can also add a cup of peroxide instead of bleach to a

I had a though about lookin up my old DI's. I typed in thier names in my search engine, and came up with only one, Sgt. Levesque. It was a story about what happened to him in Viet Nam. I called John Brown who is the commander of the VA, who also worked with me at the Sheriff's dept. yes, he's from Youngstown. It seems Sgt. Levesque works with the blind veterans, as he lost his eye sight in Viet Nam. John told me how to get in touch with him, so I called. He answered, Don Levesque, how can I help you? Here's a man I haven't seen or talked to in forty eight years, and I got the feeling of needing to snap to, but I didn't . I said, Platton 289, F Co. Parris Island. He said, yeah, my platoon. I said Pvt. Boyle, Platoon Guide. He said, son of a bitch, how the hell are ya. I said, the question is, how are you, I read a story about you and losing your eye sight. He said, ya know Boyle, I remember you, you had your head and ass wired together..After exchanging pleasantries, we discussed disabilities, and I told him my story. He said, remember one thing Boyle, it's ability, not disability, if I taught you anything, remember that. We talked a couple more minutes then agreed to stay in contact. It got to me people, ability not disablilty. I had to hear that from an old DI of mine, so, I'm just passin it on. Semper Fi.

I FOUND PEOPLE WHO COULD ANSWER MY QUESTIONS AND MADE ME LAUGH, ESPECIALLY PAM AND HER EMAIL JOKES SHE SENT ME EACH DAY. OH, HOW I MISS HER AND JUDE. WE WENT THROUGH PAM'S FOOT SURGERY AND ALL OF JUDES PROBLEMS WITH HER DOCTOR AND HOSPITAL WITH HER. I HAVE TO GET UP AT LEAST ONCE DURING THE NIGHT, SOMETIMES TWICE. I STILL WEAR PADS DURING THE DAY AND NIGHT. I WEAR SPECIAL NIGHTIME PADS. AT TIMES I AM SOAKED AND TIMES I AM PRACTICALLY DRY. THE BLADDER PROBLEMS ARE WHAT REALLY GET ME DEPRESSED. I AM ALSO PRONE TO GET UTI'S A LOT. I AM LUCKY I HAVEN'T HAD ONE LATELY, AND WILL PROBABLY BE SORRY I JUST SAID THAT. HOPE THIS INFO HELPS.
