  I just don't understand all this;

In the old days the press and others knew the weaknesses of President
Kennedy, for example; but they kept quiet so as not to debase the station of
the office of President of the United States in the eyes of the world or our
own citizenry, including those serving in the military and for whom the
President is their Commander in Chief. Now, it seems that people will do
anything to discredit the President, even lie about what actually happened or
deliberately misrepresent the facts.

Could this be the worst political atmosphere we have had since Andrew Jackson

---
35 Things you probably don't know about TM

1. It is a cousin disorder to Multiple Sclerosis.
http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/neurology_neurosurgery/specialty_areas/project_restore/conditions/

2. Fairly rare disorder, only 2-5 people per million get it.

3. Approx. 1400 new cases a year in the U.S.
http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/transversemyelitis/detail_transversemyelitis.htm

4. Roughly 33,000 people with TM in U.S.
http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/transversemyelitis/detail_transversemyelitis.htm

5. Transverse myelitis occurs in adults and children, in both genders, and
in all
races.
http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/transversemyelitis/detail_transversemyelitis.htm

6. Can be Acute (happening within hours) or Subacute (happening within days
or weeks)

7. The inflammation that causes such extensive damage to nerve fibers of the
spinal cord may result from viral infections, abnormal immune reactions, or
insufficient blood flow through the blood vessels located in the spinal
cord.

Transverse myelitis also may occur as a complication of syphilis, measles,
Lyme disease, and some vaccinations, including those for chickenpox and
rabies.

8. Can be Idiopathic (no known cause)

9. Typically a one time occurrence but there are some that have recurrent
TM.

10. 10% or better possibility of developing Multiple Sclerosis but the
possibility is fairly low if there is a normal brain MRI at TM
onset...http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18080852

11.Most symptoms of TM are identical to MS

12.Prevailing difference between TM and MS is that lesions are on spinal
nerve in

TM and on Brain in MS.

13.Transverse myelitis is a neurological disorder caused by inflammation
across

both sides of one level, or segment, of the spinal cord. This damage causes
nervous system scars that interrupt communications between the nerves in
the spinal cord and the rest of the body.

14. The inflammation and lesion created, is caused by the bodies own immune
system attacking the myelin coating of the spinal nerve.

15.The segment of the spinal cord at which the damage occurs determines
which

parts of the body are affected. Nerves in the cervical (neck) region control
signals to the neck, arms, hands, and muscles of breathing (the diaphragm).
Nerves in the thoracic (upper back) region relay signals to the torso and
some
parts of the arms. Nerves at the lumbar (mid-back) level control signals to
the
hips and legs. Finally, sacral nerves, located within the lowest segment of
the
spinal cord, relay signals to the groin, toes, and some parts of the legs.
Damage
at one segment will affect function at that segment and segments below it.
In
patients with transverse myelitis, demyelination usually occurs at the
thoracic

level, causing problems with leg movement and bowel and bladder control,
which require signals from the lower segments of the spinal cord.
http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/transversemyelitis/detail_transversemyelitis.htm

16.About one-third of people affected with transverse myelitis experience
good or

full recovery from their symptoms; they regain the ability to walk normally
and experience minimal urinary or bowel effects and paresthesias. Another
one-third show only fair recovery and are left with significant deficits
such as

spastic gait, sensory dysfunction, and prominent urinary urgency or
incontinence. The remaining one-third show no recovery at all, remaining
wheelchair-bound or bedridden with marked dependence on others for basic
functions of daily living.
http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/transversemyelitis/detail_transversemyelitis.htm

17. Four classic features of transverse myelitis emerge: (1) weakness of the
legs

and arms, (2) pain, (3) sensory alteration, and (4) bowel and bladder
dysfunction.
http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/transversemyelitis/detail_transversemyelitis.htm

18. Pain is the primary presenting symptom of transverse myelitis in
approximately one-third to one-half of all patients. The pain may be
localized

in the lower back or may consist of sharp, shooting sensations that radiate
down the legs or arms or around the torso.

Patti I have found that the cold is much worse for me. I have found that
if I wear soft long underwear under my jeans it doesn't bother me and helps to
keep me warmer. I too always have the pins needles plus the burning/freezing
all the time, but it is so much worse in the evening.. I believe that I have
learned to live with it since I am able to fall asleep and stay asleep all
night except to go potty at least once maybe twice. I have also been told by
doctors that the pins needles in the feet is called neuropathy, which is the
same nerve pain that people with diabetes suffer from. I have a good friend
with diabetes and has suffered with it for years.

You are right to remide us about cothes, shoes and sock contributing to
our TM pain. I think I've posted for eight straight winters that wearing blue

material causes. New TMers beware! It isn't just the heat that causes
additional painful sensations. The cold weather causes its own set of

I don't do meds as all they did was make me completely spaced out or

There are other external causes. The shoes you wear, your socks (always

 Hello,

A few people suggested I look into homeopathic treatment for TM
symptoms. In particular, I was suggested to take: tissue salts
(Combination F, mag. phos.; kali. phos.; nat. mur.), arnica (to take
as pills) and St John's Wart. Has anyone tried these? Anything to
report on? Of course, I am aware that the efficacy of homeopathy is
very controversial. Either way, we have the big pharma and the
'alternative' medicine guru who await our custom.

My initial TM attack was October last year and diagnosis two months
later. So that I am late for steroids, which may actually be a good
thing after hearing so many horror stories about the steroids.

You may wonder if the risks associated with the shingles vaccine,
though minimal, outweigh its benefits. And if we were only talking about
shingles, you might be right. It's not pleasant, but most people get through
shingles just fine.

Postherpetic neuralgia is another story. It can last for months,
even years, and be debilitating. The shingles vaccine can cut the risk of that
happening by two thirds. And I'd say that tips the balance in favor getting
the vaccine. I've voted with my feet. I got the vaccine, because I've seen
too many of my patients suffer from postherpetic neuralgia. Chronic pain can
disrupt a person's life

  Jim,
I think this is a question for a neurologist. Unfortunately, I
haven't seen mine in three years so I cannot ask for you. I think it would be
good of all our Tmers who are seeing a neuro to call and ask if the neuro votes
yes or no for the vaccine and post the results for us.

  Hi,
Patti--I hope you do stay on TMIC for a a long time! You are one of the
earliest ones I remember when I first got on (I remember since you are also in
Michigan) along with Jude and others.

I look on Facebook once in a while but am not on it much and did not even
include my picture in my profile section (probably to the relief of Facebook
friends). It seems like it can take up a lot of time yet I understand how it
can help people connect but I do prefer this method of TM'ers communicating
with each other.

I haven't written much about my TM but the fatigue is the most annoying. I
have been under stress with my mom in a nursing home with Alzheimer's and my
dad having had a stroke last fall and living alone )but fortunately nearby).
My two siblings live out of town so I keep track of both parents although my
brother and sister do real well in coming as often as they can and giving me a
break now and again. Applying for Medicaid a year ago and still not getting
everything finalized yet has been almost a nightmare. This past week some news
(or lack of it) regarding our Medicaid application set my banding off and I
felt like I was being squeezed to death until I talked with our Elder Law
attorney and it started ease off a bit. Does anyone else experience this
increased banding or squeezed feeling in times of stress?

I have appreciated over the years, on the list, the bits of advice given and
the sharing of symptom experiences. Once in a while I have a slipper come off
my foot and I don't know it until I see the slipper or my bare foot because I
really don't feel anything much different whether the slippers are off or on.
When this happens I remember the story I probably read on this list: a lady
with TM was walking up church steps and didn't realize her shoes had come off
until she heard people behind her laughing (may not be the exact story, but
close, as I remember it).

Anyway, I hope this list continues. Even with Facebook as an alternative.

I'm still here, too. I don't comment as much -- if someone else has
already said what I might have said, then I don't usually chime in. The
TMIC as a whole is not nearly as active as it was when I first joined back
some...oh, 14-15 years ago. I'm coming up on my 16th anniversary with TM
on Sept. 1. I think one reason is that there is a lot of information
available online now, and that's a good thing. When I first contracted TM,
I didn't have a computer, and the local library had a two-page spread in
one medical book, and that was it. TM was the first thing I searched for
when we did get a computer, and this group was the first concrete link I
found. It was a godsend, really, to have somewhere to post questions and
compare notes. But now that so much more information is online, people may
be getting their questions answered in their own research.

And I think, too, for some of us who have been here a while, we've gotten
our basic questions answered (even if the answer in some cases is that
there is no known answer), so there's not as much to talk about. The main
reason I stay on now is to be of help if anyone else has a question or
just needs some empathy and support.

Too, as Roger said, some have gone on to other means of communication now.
I think the TM message board or bulletin board was pretty active for a
while, and now Facebook is where many people go to interact online. I was
in the group there for a while, but left -- the 50+ messages Bobby Jim
referred to were just too much for me. When I first came online, TMIC was
about the only thing I did online besides an occasional e-mail to family
who had e-mail. But now nearly everybody has e-mail, many friends are on
Facebook, I've found several blogs I read as well as news and
entertainment -- now I have to be careful not to let computer time eat up
too much of my day. And I don't know, but I think that may be the biggest
reason some folks aren't as active.

When I send out birthday greetings, if an e-mail bounces back to me, I'll
make a note of it so I don't post that non-working e-mail again next time,
but I don't delete the name in case they come back. It is sad every month
to see that there are almost as many inactive names there as there are
active now. I miss hearing from some of those folks and wonder how they
are.

But I truly think as long as there is a TMIC, there will be some of us
here. We just need to wave every now and then. :-)

Yeah, I can still work, just finished an eight year 'stint' at FedEx. Me
missus, the one with MS, can also pull a 40 hr week. Avonex takes respons..
for that one.Nope, no more travelling, no more 'fun' things; what I do do
now that am re-retired (at age 71) is lots of gardening, even in this 90s type
heat, fix and upgrade my computers, look after Da Boss (weekly shot), and
clearing out the outside rear cottage so I can set up a new sculpture studio.
If it weren't so farken heat and humid,
I could do even more.;).

Quit screamming and do something useful!! Do you still work, can you
work, or are you retired? If I remember correctly, you have done a lot of
traveling and
done a lot of fun things that you don’t usually associate with TM’ers.
What do you do to take up time during the day?

Subj: It does not mean YOU...But You know a senior ( Me = 81 yrs old and
blessed !)

I like this one.

Senior version of Jesus Loves Me

  92 YEAR OLD PREACHER

While watching a little TV on Sunday instead of
going to church, I watched a church in Atlanta honoring one of its senior
pastors who had been retired many years. He was 92 at that time and I wondered
why the church even bothered to ask the old gentleman to preach at that age.
After a warm welcome, introduction of this speaker, and as the applause
quieted down, he rose from his high back chair and walked slowly, with great
effort and a sliding gait to the podium. Without a note or written paper of
any kind he placed both hands on the pulpit to steady himself and then quietly
and slowly he began to speak

When I was asked to come here today and talk to
you, your pastor asked me to tell you what was the greatest lesson ever
learned in my 50-odd years of preaching. I thought about it for a few days and
boiled it down to just one thing that made the most difference in my life and
sustained me through all my trials.. The one thing that I could always rely on
when tears and heartbreak and pain and fear and sorrow paralyzed me...
The only thing that would comfort was this
verse. .

Jesus loves me this I know.
For the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong,
We are weak but He is strong.
Yes, Jesus loves me
The Bible tells me so.

The old pastor stated, I always noticed that it
was the adults who chose the children's hymn 'Jesus Loves Me' (for the
children of course) during a hymn sing, and it was the adults who sang the
loudest because I could see they knew it the best.

Here for you now is a Senior version of Jesus
Loves Me:

JESUS LOVES ME

Jesus loves me, this I know,
Though my hair is white as snow
Though my sight is growing dim,
Still He bids me trust in Him.
(CHORUS)
YES, JESUS LOVES ME.. YES, JESUS LOVES ME..
YES, JESUS LOVES ME, FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO.

Though my steps are oh, so slow,
With my hand in His I'll go
On through life, let come what may,
He'll be there to lead the way.
(CHORUS)

When the nights are dark and long,
In my heart He puts a song..
Telling me in words so clear,
Have no fear, for I am near.
(CHORUS)

When my work on earth is done,
And life's victories have been won.
He will take me home above,
Then I'll understand His love.
(CHORUS)

I love Jesus, does He know?
Have I ever told Him so?
Jesus loves to hear me say,
That I love Him every day.
(CHORUS)

If you think this is neat, please pass it on to
your friends. If you do not pass it on, nothing bad will happen, but you will
have missed an opportunity to reach out and touch a friend or a loved one.

God Bless Us All!!!

[TMIC] The TM list

2011-07-20 Thread bobberino
I've noticed that of the 207 messages I've received since 5 July, only EIGHT
are from the original TM group(s).
It seems most have migrated to the Facebook TM Folks page
(tmf...@groups.facebook.com).

As I have as well. Why..??? Because there I can post fotos, articles
and just about anything else (decent, but of course) for y'all to see.
In fact my latest veggie patch accomplishments are there as are other fotos as
well, and as soon as I can set it up, I'll be taking fotos of my favest
sculptures as well.

So, what are y'all waiting for..??

Well, me missus had her first attack in September '97 at T-8. No treatment
received.
Then in Feb '99 she had a second attack, this one at C-5,6.
Her dx was changed from TM to MS and she's been on Avonex ever since.
No more events, relapses, nada. One can't tell she's afflicted.

Hi,
   You're right,it is a circus.
I got tm on 8/13/95. MRI showed lesion from T4-T5. Started out
paralyzed from T4 to toes. Now numb in that area, with a few areas of
hypersensitivity on left side. I have bladder/bowel problems, spasms, numbness
and tingling. I walk with a walker.
A year or so after dx. I had a flare-up and had another MRI. The
original lesion was gone. My dx remains tm. I've never had an LP.
Are your docs planning another LP? Why do they say there is not any
sign of demyl from the spinal fluid? Isn't that what made them think (along
with the spot on the brain) it was MS? I'm confused!

hello,i havnt posted on here in years, recognise most of you and see
alot of new names, just thought i would throw this out there and see what you
all think.
in feb 2000,i fell through a staircase fighting a fire and landed on
my heels,i had a shockwave go up my spine and went over on my head.had no
sighns of numbness or the pins and needles untill 3 weeks later,it got so bad i
started falling on my face and became so weak the wheelchair was the only other
option,i was given all the ms test and came up neg,but they found lesions on my
c spine and were extremely quick to call what i had transverse myelitis (
inflamation of the spinal chord ).through the course of 5 years,i went through
all the crap that comes with ms,everything from spasms, bladderdisfunct, sexual
problems etc etc and experienced every range of emotion there is.in 2005 i was
dx with ms after a positive lp and a small lesion on the brain, the lesions on
the c spine were gone and i thought i was finally going to get some
answers.well in jan i had a repeat mri done and found the spot on the brain is
still there, but was told the spinal fluid they took in 2005 showed no sighns of
demyl and they changed my dx back to tm.now how frustrating is that? 11
years,22 doctors,3 major hospital centers and 15 therapy centers later to be
put back to square 1 with still no answers.what a circus.
