It's not a criminal offence in the UK, and in fact, the Sale of Goods

distinct legal entity.

The OFT are also irrelevant if there have been no dodgy practices by

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch reads wrong Time from the Server

2010-05-06 Thread Kyruss

Hello,

the TimeZone on the Box is set to GMT +1 and so it is also at
mysqueezebox.com.
The Tiem hat the WHS is also correct, and the other Boxes are also set
to GMT+1 and sync correctly with the Server.

I also deleted the Touch at my squeezebox.com and made a FactoryReset.

After setting it up and registering it at mysqueezebox.com the time was
ok.
Till i connectet it to my WHS / the squeezeserver, then *ps* time
-15h as before.

If I do this with a Boom, the Time stays correct.

I really don't get it.

[SlimDevices: Touch] HDD removal

2010-05-06 Thread Zibi

When i put Touch in sleep mode, or power off (offline) nothing changes
(somehow annoying light from screen all night), except small sign in
the upper left corner of the screen power off (or sth. like that).

When i detach HDD in this mode Touch wakes up with warning - HDD
improperly removed, data loss possible... i do not understand that - if
this is really power off there should be no issue with removal of HDD -
at least from computer experience when off one can do whatever needed
with HDD?

Is there any way around, or one has to wake it up and remove hdd via
context menu and than put it back to sleep mode?

btw. what is TinySC?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] HDD removal

2010-05-06 Thread JJZolx

The Touch doesn't power off. It just goes into a standby mode. If you
want to remove the hard drive, you should use the menu item to
disconnect it _before_ turning off the Touch. You shouldn't just
disconnect it.

You must turn off the Touch yourself - it won't turn off by itself. It
will only go into the 'When stopped' screensaver. You need to go out to
the Home menu and press the power button in the upper left corner. The
screen should turn off, but only if you have 'Screen off' set in
ettings Screen Screensavers When off.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Change of Title Format in TinySC

2010-05-06 Thread rotho

I tried to change the Title Format in the server.prefs file of the Touch
via SSH, but I did not manage to set it to the format I want :
DISC-TRACKNUM. TITLE

In the server.prefs file, I have the following lines:

titleFormat:
- TITLE
- DISC-TRACKNUM. TITLE
- TRACKNUM. TITLE
- TRACKNUM. ARTIST - TITLE
- TRACKNUM. TITLE (ARTIST)
- TRACKNUM. TITLE - ARTIST - ALBUM
- FILE.EXT
- TRACKNUM. TITLE from ALBUM by ARTIST
- TITLE (ARTIST)
- ARTIST - TITLE
titleFormatWeb: 0

I changed the last line by putting 1 instead of 0, in order to select
the second Title Format:
titleFormatWeb: 1

So now, in the title format, I have the number of the track, but for
albums with more than one disc, I don't have the disc number, but only
the track number. So, for example, I see the following tracks for an
album with 3 tracks in disc 1 and 2 tracks in disc 2 :
1. Track 1
2. Track 2
3. Track 3
1. Track 4
2. Track 5

This is only when using TinySC. With the server running on my Mac (and
with also the titleFormatWeb value 1), with exactly the same music
files (so the same Tags), I have the correct titles:
1-1. Track 1
1-2. Track 2
1-3. Track 3
2-1. Track 4
2-2. Track 5

(In both situations, I have also the groupdiscs value set to 1)

So, is there a bug in TinySC or am I missing something ?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] HDD removal

2010-05-06 Thread JohnSwenson

The onscreen power button does two things:

Stops anything thats playing.

Engages the OFF screensaver.

There a settings page from which you can set the OFF screensaver to be
many things, including completely screen off.

There is a bug that prevents the OFF screensaver from being engaged if
the Touch is not connected to any server. So if you are not connected
to a network and you unplug the drive, the builtin server will shut
down and now the off screensave won't show up. If you have the Touch
connected to a network with an internet connection it will connect to
mysqueezebox.com (an over the internet server) when the drive is
unplugged, thus the power button will work.

The Touch comes with a minimal brightness setting
(settings-brightness-Minimal Brightness) which allows you you to set
how bright the screen is when its dark in the room. You can set this
very low so its just a very dim glow in a dark room. It will still get
bright when you turn the room lights on (or the sun comes up and you
have the curtains open)

BTW TinySC stands for Tiny Squeeze Center, the original name for the
builtin server that runs when you plug a USB drive in. (since then the
server has been renamed Squeezebox Server, so it should probably be
called TinySBS, but the original name has sort of stuck) Its called
Tiny because its stripped down so it will run on the limited resources
of the Touch.

TinySBS starts up when you plug in the drive and quits when you unplug
the drive. You should always use the Eject item from the menu before
physically unplugging a drive. The server keeps the library database on
the drive, if you just unplug it you can corrupt the database stored on
the disk and then all kinds of strange things can happen. (it probably
won't corrupt the songs themselves, just the database)

Well in the SB world off is not really a good term I agree. Since
the devices originally were extremely dumb clients having them turn off
was just not really doable. Even with the Touch you probably do not
want it going truly off in most cases since it would take it some time
to boot up and rescan each time and if the Touch. Now I could see them
adding an option for the Touch particularly if it is used standalone to
have off be a deeper off where TinySC is shutdown, screen turned
off and drive unmounted. This would be handy for people who want to
have their Touch be more trans-portable.

Note though that if the Touch is acting as a server for other devices
if TinySC is turned off (which is needed to unmount the drive) then the
other devices will not be able to connect.

I understand now that bug prevents screen off, and hdd must be manually
unmounted each time.
As far as i know in home electronics it used to be standby=ready for

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] how to open up the squeezebox touch?

2010-05-06 Thread yeo

i finally managed to dismantle it. the flexi pcb cable did give me some
problems until i could locate the latch.

then as i unscrewed the screws, i didn't know i missed one. it's hidden
underneath some soft damping material. damn!

ok. the bad news. the touch is a thousand times unlike the sb3. if you
look at the sb3, you could trace the spdif output to the ttl ic driving
it. you could trace the dac. you could tell which is which, what is
what.

on the touch, everything is much much smaller! chip packages are bga,
qfn, tssop... very very tiny, very very small.

i could identify the dac as akm4420. headphone chip ts486. couldn't
locate what's driving the spdif output though. i don't care much about
the internal dac, headphone amp, nor toslink. i only want i2s or find a
better way to tap out spdif.

i2s can be tapped from input of akm4420 but you still need to do your
homework. all the components around it are so tiny. believe me, a 0805
resistor dwarfs over all the passive components here!

i could also see a wolfson wm8974 chip. since this chip has so many
features, not sure what it's function here.

as much as i want to remove the spdif rca and replace with a bnc, and
put in a pulse transformer for spdif, the lack of space is really an
issue here. there simply isn't much!

i get home late every day so it's too dark to take photos. i'll take
photos if i get home early.

Any device that can be controlled via a remote can not be powered off
open-circuit. Now some will have a standby and off state but few
devices bother with that confusion and just call it off. Even devices
without a remote but have a soft-touch button or momentary button can
not truly be powered off. Modern computers with motherboards that
follow the ATX spec do NOT fully power off when you hit the front power
button. They can not because that power button is just a momentary
switch. So the motherboard if the PSU is plugged in and switch active
(some PSUs have builtin power switch), then the motherboard is powered.
Some portions are in a powered down state but that is configured in the
bios.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch problems

2010-05-06 Thread floater

I've been using the Touch for a week and am impressed by the sound
(digital, not tried analogue). However, I'm wary of recommending it to
others at present for various reasons.

1. Where's the manual? The quick start guide gets you going (though I
only read it after setting it up), but it is very low on information
for a device that needs a fair bit of tweaking.

2. The built in server stops regularly.

3. It says it's scanning files when sometimes it's not (hard drive
silent).

4. It'll crash if you scroll through the database quickly whilst
playing.

5. Sometimes repeats the first part of a track continually for no
apparent reason on tracks that have played ok before and do again
later.

6. Sometimes 96/24 flac files stutter with buffering message
appearing.

7. Sometimes a wipe rescan works, sometimes it doesn't just hangs.

8. The Touch claims the username password is wrong sometimes. Since
there doesn't seem any way to change this without a reset to default
this is a bit baffling.

This is with an almost new mains powered 1.5TB Samsung USB drive that
has been rock solid in use with an NSLU2 with approx. 18000 tracks,
mostly flac. The files were copied over from another drive, so no
fragmentation issues likely. As far as I can tell there is no problem
with the USB drive: if you leave it a while, you can hear it come out
of standby when you use the Touch. I've got so frustrated by the
flakiness constant worry that something will crash it that I've set
up an Eee PC running Ubuntu as server to use in the meantime. I'm not
overjoyed as one of the things that made me go for the Touch was the
ability to run without a separate server: I'll only ever have one
further client in future which will either be a Squeezebox or something
reading the SAMBA share.

Overall I'm reasonably happy, but disappointed with the internal
server. I hope the next firmware release solves these issues! As
someone who has used various flavours of Linux on and off for many
years I'm used to a bit of mucking around, but can imagine the horror
the average customer would feel if they'd just bought one.

No thats definitely not normal. I've never seen it happen - ever. That
means the player ran out of data in its buffer (which is pretty good
size), which either means something is REALLY slowing down the server
or the server has died.

Are you running anything else on the Touch? SD card with pictures
maybe?

Your best bet at this point is to look at the log files when something
bad happens. The log files are exported over the network so you can use
another computer to look at the log files. They should show up in the
networking Places under windows netowrk section of Windows Explorer,
if using a Mac I have no idea how to look at a network share, but I'm
sure it can be done. When you click on the Squeezebox Touch it wil ask
for a username and password. You can find these out in the USB_storage
sharing window. Once you have it connected you should see the logfile
directory. Look in there to find out what has been happening. Error
messages such as the rebuffering thing should show up in the log along
with other messages about what was happening, this should help tracking
things down.

If it can be done just as a forum attachment, would be good to start a

If you post the images, I can arrange the rest.

Basically:
- If you like to replace the VU meters in the Now Playing screen you
need a repository XML + package the image in a zip in the right
structure
- If you only like to use it as a screen saver with Custom Clock
plugin, it should be enough to post it here on the forum and point the
Custom Clock configuration url to the attachment.

Anyway, if you post the images or send them to me, I can arrange the
rest you they are available both as patches for Now Playing screen and
as screen savers in Custom Clock.

JohnSwenson;544027 Wrote:
Interesting, since TinySBS is closer to 7.6 server than it is to 7.5
server I wonder if an external 7.6 server would behave the same way?

Good point. You're right. It behaves the same with an external 7.6
server, but works correctly on a 7.5 server. With TinySC or a 7.6
server DISC is suppressed, DURATION is suppressed, and it won't display
FILE.EXT. It's interesting that it isn't simply failing to perform the
token substitution, it's actually purposely removing them. If you use
a title format containing '(DISC)' or '(DURATION)' it also removes the
parentheses.

For example, The Beatles [White Album], track 1 of disc 1, using the
titleformat of 'DISC-TRACKNUM. TITLE (DURATION)'.

With 7.5:

1-1. Back In The U.S.S.R. (2:43)

With TinySC and 7.6:

1. Back In The U.S.S.R.

So, is it a bug? It still bothers me that the SqueezePlay based
players no longer have their own individual player titleformats, but
are instead tied to the titleformat used by the server and intended
primarily for the web interface. SqueezePlay in many ways has been a
large step backward in terms of usability compared with the prior
implementation.

I have a feeling that only so much can be done to fix the embedded
server problems. After all, the main reason the Touch was more than
six months late to market was to get the server running in the limited
amount of memory available. How much more tweaking can be done is
anyone's guess, but I wouldn't expect too much.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch problems

2010-05-06 Thread JohnSwenson

1: There is no printed manual. There is a section for the Touch in the
wiki, click on the community tab at the top of this page and go to the
wiki. Scroll down to the Hardware section and click on the Touch entry.
This gives a few general hints about using the Touch ibternal server.

Its a little paranoid about bus powered drives. There are many bus
powered drives that will work fine when plugged direct into the Touch.
Some though actually draw more power than the USB spec allows and these
will have problems. Thus the recommendation to use a powered hub with
bus powered drives. The consensus here seems to be: try it direct first
and only resort to a powered hub if it doesn't work when connected
directly.

There is no detailed reference manual that goes into detail about every
menu option on the Touch. Your best bet is to spend some time and go
through all the setting options and get familiar with what is there.
There is a lot of stuff under the advanced settings menu.

It sounds like most of your issues are related to server problems, I'll
cover a procedure I have found which seems to have a good probability of
success, its similar to the one in the wiki, with a few modifications.

First eject the drive (from home menu) then unplug the drive. Unplug
the power on the touch. Plug the drive into a PC or Mac and delete the
.squeezebox directory. On some OSes a name that starts with a '.' is
hidden so you should turn on hidden files. This deletes any existing
database on the disk. If you have a corrupted database on the disk from
a previous scan that didn't complete strange things can happen.

Now plug in the power to the Touch. Wait a couple minutes so the
initialization is complete and things have settled down. Now plug in
the USB drive. You should get a popup saying the a USB device has been
recognized and the server is starting. You will get a message about
ejecting, at this point say you want to see the progress. From now on
do not do ANYTHING with the Touch. Don't touch the screen, don't try
and show pictures, don't try and look at the menus, don't try and play
internet radio. This is very important, the scan process takes a lot of
memory and anything else you do can use up enough memory that the scan
can crash.

This starts a full scan of the disk. This can take a LONG time for
large collections of music. Yours is not too big so it shouldn't be too
bad. First it finds all files on the disk and determines which are audio
and cover art files. You will get a file count as it goes. When it has
visited all the files you will get a completed message.

Then it goes and reads every audio file it previously found and
extracts any tag information in the file. It builds a database of
information about each song. This can take a long time. When it is done
you get a completed message.

Now it goes and reads the cover art it found on the disk. At this point
it is cataloging and resizing the cover art. Large cover art can really
slow this down, and might even crash the server if the image size is
really large. Again when it is done you will get a completed message.

You need to wait until you get all three completed messages before
continuing. At this point you can touch the Touch again. Here is where
I differ, at this point I recommend ejecting the USB device using the
home menu, physically unplug the drive cable, unplug the power to the
Touch. Plug the Touch back in, wait a couple minutes. Plug the USB
drive back in. At this point it will do a quick scan looking for any
new files it didn't see last time. If there was nothing new on the disk
it should complete this fairly quickly and NOW you are ready to play
music!

Many people don't wait long enough for the initial scan to complete and
thus leave a corrupted database on the disk. Thus the next time they
plug it in it goes and does a full scan. They then try and play music
while its still scanning, causing all kinds of problems.

One very important thing to note is that if the drive is plugged in
when the Touch boots, you get NO indication whatsoever that a scan is
happening!! Thus when you try and play music things are going to be
very slow and its quite easy to kill the server when trying to play
music while a scan is going on. This is why I highly recommend to get
in the habit of always plugging the drive in AFTER booting the Touch,
then you KNOW when the scan is done.

If you try this procedure and you are still having the problems come
back with the details and we can try and work them out.

John S.

2010-05-06 Thread JohnSwenson

The power button doesn't actually turn the power off, all it does is
stop any playing music and bring up the OFF screensaver. You have
many different choices for the OFF screensaver including a full screen
off.

There is a bug in the touch which prevents the off screensaver from
starting when you don't have a server connected (external or internal).
So it sounds like you are trying to push the power button when the drive
is not connected or when the server has died.

Please see my post in this thread for a sequence that seems to work
well:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78386

With such a small number of songs the scanning process should be very
quick on your drive.

If this doesn't work come back and we can dive in some more.

On the 24/96 FLAC files that shutter, do you know what compression level
was used? The Touch when in Standalone Mode is using just about all of
its resources and can't reliably play 24/96 FLAC files with -8
compression. Best to convert 24/96 FLAC files to -5 for use with the
Touch. -8 Compression needs a bunch of CPU time and very little space
is actually saved by using anything above -5.

I wouldn't dismiss the possibility of running your server over a
wireless connection until you try it first. Many people with healthy

After having reported my problems of reading 24/96 files with Tiny SC on

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=543088postcount=161)
whereas I had no problem when reading these files from a 4Gb USB stick,
I decided to make the following test :

I erased the contents of my HDD and copied on it the contents of the
USB stick. And now, on the HDD, the reading of the 24/96 files is
perfect (even when using the other now playing screens : large
cover, vu-meters, ...).

So my conclusion is the following : TinySC uses far more CPU when
playing music files from a huge database.

What could be the explanation ?
Can we expect an optimization of the CPU usage in a future release of
SBS or is the hardware of the Touch too limited, anyway ?

squezeboxes while using Squeezebox server on the Touch?

I am able to synch my Touch with two other SB3s, but I am unable to
figure out how to synch the volume on all of them. I was able to do
this when I was using squeezebox server on my computer. Is there a
setting for this? I beleive the interfce on the computer has a setting
for synching the volume.

Thanks!

Re your other problems, I am sorry but it works flawlessly for me but
then I am not using a locally connected drive which is where I suspect
the problems originate (Logitechs not your drive!)

Thanks: that's what should have been in the box, or at the very least
referenced. Maybe with the next production run...

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Search engine

2010-05-06 Thread JJZolx

This is to the best of my memory.

- First, there's a server setting that affects whether your search
string will be matched only at the beginning of words or anywhere
within words. Note the _words_ part. Words begin either at the
beginning of the string or after a space. Find it at:

Settings My Music Search Within Words

If you set it to 'within words' then 'body' will match both 'Body and
  Soul' and 'Everybody's Gone'.

- Searches are case insensitive.

- It does a simple string match on the _entire_ string that you
enter. If you search for 'soul body', then you're looking for that
exact string. It's not like a web search where you're searching for
something containing the two words 'soul' and 'body'.

- All of the data strings that can be searched (artist, album name,
track title, etc) have a 'search' version stored in the database.
These fields have all punctuation characters replaced by spaces, and
multiple spaces are folded into a single space. This is why 'body
  soul' matches 'Body Soul'.

- The same thing is done for the search string entered. Searching
for 'body soul' is the same as searching for 'body soul'. If you
were to search for 'coleman #%@ ^$- +! hawkins' it will find
  'Coleman Hawkins'.

So, with this in mind, how about a SB equipment swap??

Radio batteries are not available in Canada so maybe a Canadian will
swap a Touch for a Radio battery with me?

Tell you what, I'll throw in free shipping as well!

I too have a PS Audio DL3 and the auto sensing inputs no longer work.
Another vote has been cast on bugzilla to add this feature.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/96 Perfromance Issue ( Solution!)

2010-05-06 Thread JohnSwenson

I don't have that big a library, only about 15000 songs and I don't see
that behavior at all. In may case the server gets up to about 10% max
when playing files (even 24/96 flac -8)

The only time I see it going high is when the scanner is running. Is
there a chance the scanner is still running? Are you booting the Touch
then plugging in the drive and watching the scan to see when it
finishes? (there will always be a scan when you plug a drive in).

The only other thing I can think of is if a bunch of retries are
happening. There could be issues with a large database when skipping
ahead in a playlist, but once a song is playing I don't see how the
number of songs can cause a problem other than normal things like
fragmentation.

Terry,

I agree as well. If it were not for my iphone ipeng app, I would be
pretty disappointed. Fortunately for me as we discussed earlier, the
analog outs sound great to me in my setup, so I guess I can live with
the distance viewing shortcomings.

Coming from the Deut(with no obvious screen viewing other than the
controller) you must have been set on having the ability to see the
text and also hoping for better digital out performance. In your case,
neither came true. Can't win them all:) Hope to see you boys soon!

Someone from my local forum suggested that it is actually possible to
use a SB Touch to control another Touch. Nifty idea though impractical.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch USB drive not visible on computer

Thanks for the replies.
JohnSwenson: I followed your instructions the other night and WAS
able to see the SqueezeBox Touch under My computer\My Network
Places\Entire Network\Microsoft Windows Network\Workgroup, but it gave
my a warning message saying I did not have access to the drive. It did
not give me the option of putting in a user name and password. Today, I
can't see the SqueezeBox Touch at all under Workgroup, so I'm unsure
how to proceed...
JJZolx: Where is the Workgroup name changed on the Touch? Is this
the User name under Advanced/USB and SD Storage/Set Sharing
Account?
I tried getting to the touch by entering \\MyTouchName in the
Windows Explorer address bar but was told Windows couldn't find it.
What is the Samba server? I tried rebooting the Touch, but XP
doesn't see it still.
Thanks for the help. I don't believe I'll be able to do this without
this forum's knowledgeable people.
Sincerely, Dusty

You could also try \\[touch ip]\ where you need to put in the ip of
your touch.

The samba server is the bit (that should be) making access to your HD
available on your network.

As you already knew, my first goal was a better digital source. I
took the Touch over to a coworker/audio friend's house last night for
an objective co-listener before I made the decision to send it back.
After last night, I'm sending it back.

If the screen had been viewable from a greater distance, I would have
kept the Touch for my basement setup. But as it's not...

I'll just wait for the next, and hopefully improved, Squeezebox. Until
then, my Duet will be working just fine.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/96 Perfromance Issue ( Solution!)

2010-05-06 Thread rotho

I will make more tests this evening (I have just finished the
restoration of the initial contents of my FAT32 formatted HDD from its
twin HFS+ HDD : I didn't want to spend too much time with no backup of
my 400 Gb of FLAC files !).

In my initial tests, I had carefully waited that the scan process
(which lasted around 2 hours, for 1200 albums / 16000 songs) was
finished, but then I hadn't rebooted the Touch before listening to
music. After having read your posts, I did other tests where I rebooted
the Touch, then connected the HDD, then waited for the rescan to finish,
and I had the same problem as before.

Anyway, as I said, I will make very careful tests this evening.

On a french forum, I read that someone had certain compatibility
problems with a HDD which had been FAT32 formatted on an Imac. And
that's exactly the case of my HDD : I have formatted it in FAT32 by
using the Disk Utility. I did not encounted any compatibility
problems (on the contrary : the Touch mounts my HDD a lot faster than
my Mac, which is more accustomed to the HFS+ filesystem), but perhaps
it could be an explanation of my problem. Perhaps I should reformat my
HDD with another method. What do you think ?
