IMHO, most people will be better of with a separate server on a
computer, Sheevaplug, Vortexbox appliance or similar. For some people
the built-in server in the Touch will work, but it might also not work
depending on your size of library, file format, network, customization
requirements, performance requirements other similar things.

I wouldn't want to guarantee that the built-in server will work for
anything else than occasional USB sticks from friends. Sure, it might
work with a USB drive with your main library, but it depends too much
on your requirements and the environment so there is no way to
guarantee it.

The situation might of course be different in the future if the server
is further optimized.

But at the moment I think the best recommendation if you want to be
sure to get a trouble free reliable setup, is to use a separate server.
Consider it to be a positive side effect if the built-in server works in
your environment for your main library.

Have you tried the different now playing screens? Just touch anywhere
in the middle of the now playing screen and it toggles between 5
different screens, one of which has no artwork and one which is the VU
meters.

Are you refering to the playlist screen? You are right that there is no
way to get rid of the iconic artwork in that view. It would help a
little. If you made it just one line and made the font big enough so it
covered the full vertical distance you would only have say three
characters on the screen at once. True it would be more visible but the
scrolling would be horrendous! The font size VS how many characters you
can display on the screen at once is an interesting exercise in trade
offs.

Anything in the user interface can be modified by changing the lua code
which can be installed with the patch installer so its not cast in
concrete. But most people have been focusing on the now playing screen.
If you consider the playlist screen to be of high importance and can get
enough people to agree that its a high priority I'm sure someone will
eventually come up with some modifications, but its going to be tough
to satify everybody since there will be many different "ideal" points
on the font size VS number of characters scale.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Album art missing in album lists

2010-05-29 Thread HectorHughMunro

I had this with TinySC on the Touch. It was fine with Squeezebox Server
but not TinySC. It seemed to affect an handful of albums that I had
downloaded from Itunes. The way I fixed it was to have a jpeg copy of
the artwork named cover.jpg in each of the album folders. I use MP3Tag
(it's free) which allows you to extract artwork from the tags.

Tony T;551378 Wrote:

The server (squeezeboxServer) is written in perl, the player part
(SqueezePlay) uses lua as its user interface language.

In both cases major parts are written in C linked into the particular
interpreter.

In the player the audio samples exist entirely in C code with the lua
code handling the UI parts (what is in a menu, what a button looks
like, what to do when a button is pushed). The actual drawing on the
frame buffer is also done by C code.

The server is written in perl to be transportable to many different
plattforms. It uses many perl modules that have complex C
implementations but they use "standard" ones that have already been
ported to many different platforms.

I have not spent too much time in the guts of the server so I can't
give precise details, primarily because I hate perl. I too would prefer
python.

Lua was chosen for the player I presume because the basic
implementation of the server is quite small and it interfaces well to
underlying C code. There is a large amount of custom C code in the
player. With the player they were aiming at specific hardware
implementations so did not need to maintain portability to a large
number of platforms so large amounts of custom C code was not as big a
deal as it would be for the server.

> Toshiba drive?

There are a couple of issues, its a little difficult to figure out
which is which.

Lets tackle the sleep issue first. IF the drive just spins down but
keeps its connection to the USB port alive there is no problem. You can
test this by seeing of the server is still alive. Don't use it for
awhile and see if its spun down. If yes don't try and play any music,
go to the home menu and select USB, there should then be a selection
for SqueezeboxServer. Select that and it will tell you if the server is
running or not. If it is, drive sleeping is not the problem. If the
server IS stopped, then you have to worry about the sleep setting of
the drive.

If the server is still running you have other issues.

There is a known bug with ALAC files so that is probably whats
happening with the them. The developers are working on it. I think I
heard there is a fix, there are threads on this already, do a search
ALAC and you should find it.

Are the flac files 24/96 files? Some people are having problems with
24/96 flac files that use high compression settings. The high
compression takes more horsepower and can cause problems. Are the flac
files that are causing problems 24/96? Ifr yes this is probably the
problem and can be fixed by re-encoding them to a low compression
level.

If the flac files are 16/44.1 files then it very unusual and we need to
do some investigation to find out whats happening. Let us know as much
information as you can about the files and library. Sample rate, bit
depth, compression level. How big your library is. Do you have artwork
with these files? Is it a separate file or embedded in the file.

Have waited for the scan to complete before trying to play music? Both
initial scan and "quick" scan whenever attaching the drive.

On the back, immediately above the power jack is a Reset button. Press
it briefly to reboot the Touch. To do a factory reset hold it down for

There have been reports that a large music collection can cause
problems, but there is no consensus of what is 'Large' -- I have 8,000
Flac files. The only minor annoyance I find is that selecting a Random
Mix of songs will pause and re-buffer for about 10 seconds, but only on
the 1st song. No problems after that.

Are you FLAC's compressed with the default '5' setting? Higher
compression or 96 Khz 24 bit FLAC files been reported to cause
problems.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Using as a standalone FLAC player from portable HDD...

2010-05-29 Thread Dead Cell

Guys I'm new here and have done some reading regarding this but I'm
still confused.

Basically I have a Sony 2400ES AVR connected to a pair of floor
standing Mordaunt Short 916i and an Eltax sub.

I am in need of a device which I can connect to the AVR via Coaxial,
Optical or HDMI and be able to play FLAC files from my Seagate Go
Portable HDD.

I understand that the Squeezebox Touch allows for SD cards but does it
also allow for an USB 2.5 inch Seagate Go Portable hard drive to be
connected via it's USB port and will it play the FLAC files from it?

I'm not interested in streaming music from my PC but the Internet radio
seems useful and I'm also guessing that I can just connect an Ethernet
cable and have access to online radio without needing my PC?

I'm desperately in need of a device which can play FLAC files without
streaming from PC or having to have my TV on in order to be able to do
so.

Is the Squeezebox Touch what I need or is there a better alternative
out there?

I also plan on buying a decent separate stereop amplifier in the near
future.

If someone can help me out and point me in the right direction I'd be
very grateful.

Cheers and thanks in advance.

I use the Duet remote to control the Touch. It works fine. I actually
sold my Duet receiver and kept the controller. (The Duet controller
also works fine with my SB3 in a second system and the Radio in the
kitchen.)

I'm in the same boat with you and a lot of others. I consider the
Touch's screen and touch capability pretty much superfluous. It is rare
that I look at the Touch (it is behind my listening position) and rare
that I control any aspect of the Touch's operation with its screen.

That doesn't bother me too much as one gets "extras" one never uses
with many products these days, especially technology ones. The only
time I get annoyed is when the extras interfere with the fundamental
operation. That's not been a problem for me as I use the Touch with an
external server and it performs its player obligations extremely well.
(I would not be so happy if I used a USB drive directly)

I think it is a very legitmate question for a buyer to have some idea
if this device is going to work for him. There are a number of people
who, for various reasons, would love to have a Touch directly play
their music from a USB drive without the need for an external server.

Nothing on the web site gives these people any indication that results
may be iffy or require a special, ritualistic setup procedure to have
any chance of succeeding.

My two cents is that if Logitech is going to continue marketing the
Touch as capable of playing directly from USB devices, they've got a
long way to go in making it a consumer friendly device. In the
meantime, it is only common decency that potential buyers get some
indication of the current limitations. Given Logitech's history in the
area of honest marketing, I'm not too optimistic they'll change
anything.

I tried deactivating the plugin, applying/restarting, then reactivating

The "Pressing SEARCH on the Remote Control" setting I have is "Accesses

(oh btw, while I'm here & trying to be economical with topic count,
didn't ReplayGain used to be configurable somewhere? has that facility
been removed or am I missing something?)

Thanks in advance...

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Help for an aspiring audiophile

2010-05-29 Thread NeonFrog

Excellent!! Just spent the last 2 hours trying to order one from the UK
Logitech site with the 15% discount, but it refused with 'payment
authorisation failed'. Called the support line but they were no help,
telling me that it must be fault at my card end WITHOUT asking me any
questions. Nothing wrong with my card mate, I just used it to buy the
Western Digital My Passport 320gb.

So now I've ordered the USB drive to use with the Touch, but no
Touch!!

Still got to make my mind up:

Audioengine A5
Audioengine A2
Alesis M1 Active 520
Alesis M1 Active 320

H... help?

You want the Touch II that I asked for a year ago - where the

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch - first impressions and questions

2010-05-29 Thread liffy99

I can only agree with the disappointing readability of the Touch screen.
I for one find the album art a gimmick and would far prefer to do away
with that for a larger font I can read from 4m plus away. And why do I
need to see three song titles at once ? My SB3 was perfectly adequate
showing one at a time and I just scrolled.

I think Logitech have got this seriously wrong - the Touch would be
fantastic as an in car item (where the proximity and touch elements of
the screen would be perfect) but for remote operation it's next to
hopeless. What is the point of a 5cm picture of album art that you can
barely see from a listening position ?

So are there any cures ? Would / could Logitech release a software
update that did away with (or provided an option to replace) the 3 song
titles / small font thing and tried to emulate the SB3 ? Is there a
remote device that can handle the display info in your hand (like the
Sonos) ? I've heard mention of Itouch / Ipeng etc but haven't a clue
how this might work.

Oh, and please Logitech, can I have my analogue sound level meters back
. . . .

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Incorrect album artwork displayed

2010-05-29 Thread sachadog

Hi,
I had problems with the Touch, on a Windows Home Server.
I run 3 Classics and a Duet and of course the Touch. I had never had a
problem with Duet, artwork wise. But with the Touch, (probably more
noticeable with the larger screen) I was getting random artwork, which
was especially noticeable when playing "Various Artists" albums. The
one's in particular were the "Now That's What I Call Music! # CD1 or
CD2". I found out that if you truncated the title to "Now # CD1 or
CD2" the correct artwork was displayed.
I then tried taking out all of the punctuation in the title "Now Thats
What I Call Music # CD1 or CD2. The correct artwork was displayed. I
then tried "Now that's What I Call Music # CD1 or CD2" and that worked
fine. The upshot is that it appears the exclamation mark in the title,
somehow affects the way the artwork is shown. All of my files have
embedded artwork shown as "Folder.jpg". By removing the exclamation
mark the correct artwork was displayed.
I checked my other files and found random files showed up with random
artwork. On each occasion there was punctuation in the title. By
trial and error, I eventually got the Touch to show the right artwork.
I am not saying this is the definitive answer, but it worked for me.
I am running the latest release of Squeezebox Server.

My many years old Archos mp3 player does just that: scans the database
on disconnection from the PC. The only way I have ever added tracks to
it has been by cutting & pasting. No database on the PC at all. And it
just works & has never crashed. Now, my touch with a directly connected
drive has been somewhat different! Which has the most hardware resources
I wonder...

In any case, the Touch crashes AFTER the database is created too (using
USB), so that is a red herring anyway.

Very true. ;)

I presumed the OP wanted full SBS UI control of Touch.
If the OP only requires basic play back control of Touch then Netbook +
SqueezePlay would certainly do the trick.

As a retail product they have nothing in common. Technology is

You know what I meant...

Go to any retail web site - find iThings under "Portable Music Players"
and find SB devices (if you CAN find them) under Wi-fi Music Players or
Network Players or Media Streamers.

They are chalk and cheese.

So they have a similar CPU? - so does my Dishwasher!

The only functional similarity is that both they have software that
organises music on a hard disk into a library...

I could change "nothing" to "very little".

You could also leave the TOUCH connected to the internal tinySbS with
UBS drive but control it from your netbook with SQUEEZEPLAY running on
your netbook (with the touch selected as the Player within
squeezeplay). Download it here toward bottom of page:

http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.5

Note that you can also use this squeezeplay to turn your netbook into a
virtual squeezeplayer as well (even playing music FROM your touch/usb

than the touch. bottom line, squeezeplay can mimic both a player and

There is no computer UI control of the Touch when using Touch's inbuilt
server + USB source material.
Touch's touch screens and IR remote are fully functional regardless of
what Touch is connected to (TinySBS on Touch, full SBS on computer,
MySB.com online).

If you had Touch connected to full SBS on a computer (giving you UI
control), simply switch Touch to it's own internal server from the
Touch itself.

Active monitors (or any self powered, self amplified speakers) will
work great with Touch. :)

Anything audio is very subjective, but I think you will find the
Touch's DAC far superior to a $400 class AVR/receiver.
It is very simple to compare the Touch vs AVR DAC's. Simply attach
both analog and digital outs from Touch to two separate input devices
on your AVR.
Now simply switch between these two inputs with your AVR's remote, see
which you prefer.
This is an overly simplistic ABX comparison, but I'd bet you will
easily hear a difference. Let your ears decide which you find more
pleasing.

As suggested, your AVR is doing double DAC conversions using it's DAC.
Touch's DAC (analog outs) will eliminate this double conversion.
IMO, Touch's excellent DAC plus eliminating the double DAC conversion
will be quite revealing to your ears. :)

I've been thinking, if I ever do go to a dedicated server (instead of

database offline as part of the iTunes sync process.

There is a device out there however that also uses an ARM CPU slower
than the Touch, builds its database online and manages to operate
faster than even SBS running on a powerful PC. Even better, it was a
device designed in the previous century...

...the device, the empeg in car mp3 player, a marvel of efficient code
and hardware.

Hahahahahaah

iPod plays music, indexed by tags.

Touch plays music indexed by tags.

iPod plays said music from directly connected hard drive.

Touch plays said music from directly connected hard drive.

iPod has no audible output of its own, but you can connect headphones.

Touch has no audible output of its own, but you can connect
headphones.

iPod runs on an internal battery, but could use an external power
supply.

Touch runs on external power suuply, but could be rigged up to
batteries if desired: I believe one forum member uses one in his car.

No, nothing in common whatsoever!!! Thanks for the biggest laugh of the
day so far.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to lock audio output at 100% (I think)

2010-05-29 Thread firedog

Hi,

I somehow don't get it. How do I install the patch installer?

And where do I find the actual audio 100% patch so that the patch
installer can install it?

Thanks,
Danny

Tranquil PC fanless WHS server running SqueezeServer; SB Duet through
Empirical Audio Pace Car; MF X-150 amp, MF V DAC3, Devore Gibbon Super
8 Speakers; Mirage MS-12 sub; Dual 506 + Ortofon 20 (occasional use);
sometimes use PC with M-Audio 192 as digital source. SB Boom in second
room. Arcam CD82 which I don't use anymore, even though it's a very
good player.

1) The Touch is not a "high-spec portable mp3 player" - it is a (very)
high quality Network Music Player. It has no audible output of its own
and does not run on batteries.

2) The Touch and an ithing have nothing in common.

You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it
ain't what you'd call minimal...
Touch(wired/XP) - TACT 2.2X (Linear PSU) + Good Vibrations S/W - MF
Triplethreat(Audiocom full mods) - Linn 5103 - Aktiv 5.1 system (6x
LK140's, ESPEK/TRIKAN/KATAN/SEIZMIK 10.5), Townsend Supertweeters, Blue
Jeans Digital,Kimber Speaker & Chord Interconnect cables
Kitchen Boom, Outdoors: SB Radio

So we have what is in essence a high spec. mp3 player that can't
function as well as a portable mp3 player... It would seem SBS is not
very efficient & the legacy of having it run on a PC has caught out
Logitech with their hardware specification for the Touch.

If an iPod behaved like this would people be happy?? An iPod Classic
with 160GB drive claims to be able to store up to 40,000 songs. Has
anyone got near this & does it still work? I'd expect a domestic
equivalent (e.g. Touch) to work better, if anything!
