For some people the built-in server in the Touch will work, but it might also not work depending on your size of library, file format, network, customization requirements, performance requirements other similar things. I wouldn't want to guarantee that the built-in server will work for anything else than occasional USB sticks from friends. Sure, it might work with a USB drive with your main library, but it depends too much on your requirements and the environment so there is no way to guarantee it. The situation might of course be different in the future if the server is further optimized. But at the moment I think the best recommendation if you want to be sure to get a trouble free reliable setup, is to use a separate server. Consider it to be a positive side effect if the built-in server works in your environment for your main library. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info) (Install my plugins through Extension Downloader) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library, Title Switcher and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.isaksson.info/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79212 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Just touch anywhere in the middle of the now playing screen and it toggles between 5 different screens, one of which has no artwork and one which is the VU meters. Are you refering to the playlist screen? You are right that there is no way to get rid of the iconic artwork in that view. It would help a little. If you made it just one line and made the font big enough so it covered the full vertical distance you would only have say three characters on the screen at once. True it would be more visible but the scrolling would be horrendous! The font size VS how many characters you can display on the screen at once is an interesting exercise in trade offs. Anything in the user interface can be modified by changing the lua code which can be installed with the patch installer so its not cast in concrete. But most people have been focusing on the now playing screen. If you consider the playlist screen to be of high importance and can get enough people to agree that its a high priority I'm sure someone will eventually come up with some modifications, but its going to be tough to satify everybody since there will be many different "ideal" points on the font size VS number of characters scale. I had this with TinySC on the Touch. It was fine with Squeezebox Server but not TinySC. It seemed to affect an handful of albums that I had downloaded from Itunes. The way I fixed it was to have a jpeg copy of the artwork named cover.jpg in each of the album folders. Tony T;551378 Wrote: > Or at the very least move to python scripts. > (Is all of SBS and TinySC really in Perl?) The server (squeezeboxServer) is written in perl, the player part (SqueezePlay) uses lua as its user interface language. In both cases major parts are written in C linked into the particular interpreter. In the player the audio samples exist entirely in C code with the lua code handling the UI parts (what is in a menu, what a button looks like, what to do when a button is pushed). The actual drawing on the frame buffer is also done by C code. The server is written in perl to be transportable to many different plattforms. It uses many perl modules that have complex C implementations but they use "standard" ones that have already been ported to many different platforms. I have not spent too much time in the guts of the server so I can't give precise details, primarily because I hate perl. I too would prefer python. Lua was chosen for the player I presume because the basic implementation of the server is quite small and it interfaces well to underlying C code. There is a large amount of custom C code in the player. With the player they were aiming at specific hardware implementations so did not need to maintain portability to a large number of platforms so large amounts of custom C code was not as big a deal as it would be for the server. Is it possible to turn off the sleep function on my > Toshiba drive? There are a couple of issues, its a little difficult to figure out which is which. Lets tackle the sleep issue first. IF the drive just spins down but keeps its connection to the USB port alive there is no problem. You can test this by seeing of the server is still alive. Don't use it for awhile and see if its spun down. If yes don't try and play any music, go to the home menu and select USB, there should then be a selection for SqueezeboxServer. Select that and it will tell you if the server is running or not. If it is, drive sleeping is not the problem. If the server IS stopped, then you have to worry about the sleep setting of the drive. If the server is still running you have other issues. There is a known bug with ALAC files so that is probably whats happening with the them. The developers are working on it. I think I heard there is a fix, there are threads on this already, do a search ALAC and you should find it. Are the flac files 24/96 files? Some people are having problems with 24/96 flac files that use high compression settings. The high compression takes more horsepower and can cause problems. Are the flac files that are causing problems 24/96? Ifr yes this is probably the problem and can be fixed by re-encoding them to a low compression level. If the flac files are 16/44.1 files then it very unusual and we need to do some investigation to find out whats happening. Let us know as much information as you can about the files and library. Sample rate, bit depth, compression level. How big your library is. Do you have artwork with these files? Is it a separate file or embedded in the file. Have waited for the scan to complete before trying to play music? Both initial scan and "quick" scan whenever attaching the drive. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Incorrect album artwork displayed
Hi, I had problems with the Touch, on a Windows Home Server. I run 3 Classics and a Duet and of course the Touch. I had never had a problem with Duet, artwork wise. But with the Touch, (probably more noticeable with the larger screen) I was getting random artwork, which was especially noticeable when playing "Various Artists" albums. The one's in particular were the "Now That's What I Call Music! # CD1 or CD2". I found out that if you truncated the title to "Now # CD1 or CD2" the correct artwork was displayed. I then tried taking out all of the punctuation in the title "Now Thats What I Call Music # CD1 or CD2. The correct artwork was displayed. I then tried "Now that's What I Call Music # CD1 or CD2" and that worked fine. The upshot is that it appears the exclamation mark in the title, somehow affects the way the artwork is shown. All of my files have embedded artwork shown as "Folder.jpg". By removing the exclamation mark the correct artwork was displayed. I checked my other files and found random files showed up with random artwork. On each occasion there was punctuation in the title. By trial and error, I eventually got the Touch to show the right artwork. I am not saying this is the definitive answer, but it worked for me. I am running the latest release of Squeezebox Server. -- sachadog sachadog's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10564 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79202 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

My many years old Archos mp3 player does just that: scans the database on disconnection from the PC. The only way I have ever added tracks to it has been by cutting & pasting. No database on the PC at all. And it just works & has never crashed. Now, my touch with a directly connected drive has been somewhat different! Which has the most hardware resources I wonder... Anything audio is very subjective, but I think you will find the Touch's DAC far superior to a $400 class AVR/receiver. It is very simple to compare the Touch vs AVR DAC's. Simply attach both analog and digital outs from Touch to two separate input devices on your AVR. Now simply switch between these two inputs with your AVR's remote, see which you prefer. This is an overly simplistic ABX comparison, but I'd bet you will easily hear a difference. Let your ears decide which you find more pleasing. As suggested, your AVR is doing double DAC conversions using it's DAC. Touch's DAC (analog outs) will eliminate this double conversion. IMO, Touch's excellent DAC plus eliminating the double DAC conversion will be quite revealing to your ears. :) -- toby10 toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79230 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
