Old is a relative term. I feel fairly young next to my mother, who is

I started my record collecting in the mid 1960s. In the late 1960s I
acquired an open reel and ended up with more than a few original items
on tape along with some copies of studio masters. In those cases, you
either convert or lose them.

I found the process rather enjoyable overall, plus it was always
exciting to rediscover a lost gem.

I noticed the problem with the spectrum analyzer too. An advice `server

Now I´m using 7.6 and there is no problem.
Imo 7.6 works fine, no advice `server aborting` in snatches. (I´m using

[SlimDevices: Touch] TinySB incompatible with .jpg and .png ?

In order to scan the music library without errors I have to delete all

Surely this is a bug in TinySB because all works fine when using the PC

Any recommendations?

TinySBS can handle jpg and png, it just can't handle BIG ones. It
doesn't have enough memory to decode large files. So make sure your

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Power Management - Energy Saving Switch

2011-02-14 Thread JohnSwenson

The clock issue may be related to time. When the Touch powers up it
doesn't have a reliable time (it doesn't have a battery backed up RTC),
it needs to go out to a server to get the time. If it has not received
the time from a server it will not display the clock (better to not
display the clock than to display a completely bogus time) If you are
running stand alone (USB drive and TinySBS) the clock will not display
unless the Touch can connect either to a local SBS somewhere on your
network or connect to mysb.com over the internet.

If you don't have a local SBS then it has to connect over the internet
to mysb.com to get the time. If something is preventing that connection
you won't get a clock. Normally the Touch will try and connect to a
local server first, if there isn't one it will try and connect to
mysb.com. If there is an internet issue, or if mysb.com is not
connecting (sometimes it has problems and players can't connect), no
clock.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] TinySB incompatible with .jpg and .png ?

2011-02-14 Thread Jokke

Message from Andyg (developer Logitech) in April 2010

Local music service has been stopped due to a problem usually means
that the system ran out of memory. The most likely cause for out of
memory errors is during the artwork scan, when a very large image is
encountered. Future versions will refuse to resize very large images
but for now this is a problem. So you should look for large high-res
images as either cover.jpg files or embedded tags. By large I'm talking
over 1MB in size.

Question : Why should it take over 10 months to have this bug resolved?

It will be resolved in 7.6. The artwork code had to be completely
rewritten. You should never use PNGs for artwork, always use
non-progressive JPEGs and you'll be fine. These don't have memory

The music I'm really interested in listening to is readily available in
a digitized format. The issue now becomes one of convenience: am I going
to access that material by thumbing through the pile of poorly organized
physical discs (only to realize an hour later that I've borrowed that
particular CD I was looking for to a friend), or am I going to dial the
music I'm interested in on my iPhone and then stream it to my main audio
system?

If the latter, the question becomes: am I going to keep that digitized
music on my crash-prone HD, or in the cloud?

There are various ways. The FLAC Frontend utility that comes with flac
(flac.sourceforge.net) will do it. So will dBpoweramp, and foobar2000
may do it as well.

After you've converted you'll need to use a good tagging program to add
tags, because the WAV files probably won't have them. If the filenames
are sensible then adding tags is quick and easy with something like
mp3tag. If the filenames are not sensible you'll have to do some
typing.

is an option to fold them into artists, but it doesn't work in the
album display or in now playing. These fields do work in searches.

I try to put the composer in the album title and leave ARTIST for the
 actual musicians, e.g.

 ALBUM: Brahms Tchaikovsky: Violin Concertos
 ARTIST: Heifetz; Reiner

If you have a large collection, you should look into Custom
Scan/Browse. At the very least it allows you to create a menu sorted by
the COMPOSER tag, or you can add your own custom tags.

I use dbpoweramp to rip my CDs. There is an Artist field then an album
field righ underneath. There is also another Artist field on the far
right on the top. What do I do using dbpoweramp?

Absolutely, and that's the only way to go about it. Just because you
rip your CDs to your hard drive, doesn't mean that you should now toss
the CDs on a bon fire.

The prudent way is not to put all one's eggs in only one basket. Right
now, I have my music stored on the original CDs, on my computer, on 4
external hard drives (2 at home, 2 in the office), plus some music in
the cloud as well (Amazon, DropBox, and some other services).

The odds that all these multiple copies will one day disappear at the
same time in a puff of smoke are astronomically minimal.

 About the Squeezebox Touch:

I haven't had this much fun with an audio gizmo since the Hafler Matrix
 (anyone still remembers that one?).

First with the Touch out of the box, then with Soundcheck's mods, then
with rediscovering some forgotten CDs as I (slowly) rip my entire
collection, and finally with being able to listen to 24/96 downloads,
it has been a musically exhilarating few months since the Touch has
 lived in my system.

And all of this for $300!

So much music, so little time . . .

Guido F.I agree completely! I have listened more to my system since I got the
Touch (a couple weeks ago) since I don't know when. I listened to some
'old' stuff the other night, sounded amazing. I think I have
added/upgraded several components since I last listened to it. Guess I
should listen to the CD and do a comparison ... nah! sounds great thru
the Touch (wireless streaming and all), why bother?

BTW, Guido, wondering what is displayed on your 840C when playing thru
the Touch? and if you are going wireless or using Ethernet? (altho I
don't think it would make a difference in what the 840C displays).

Mine shows =20/96 even when streaming 24/96 files, and =20/44.1
when streaming CD-sourced (Apple lossless) files. There is an issue
with the 840C and 'status bits' sent from the source ...

When connected to my Oppo 980H the same files (burned to and played on
a DVD) read 24/96.

TIA, - Rick.

Hi Rick:

I'm hooked up wireless.

Yes, my CA 840C also displays =20/96 when streaming 24/96 files from
my Touch.

But when streaming a 24/96 DVD Audio played on my Oppo, the 840C reads
24/48!

The 840C manual states somewhat cryptically that rather than exact
word width, some sources report data as either 20 bit maximum . . . or
24 bit maximum.

Looks like the 840C display is not accurate in either case.

If the filenames
are sensible then adding tags is quick and easy with something like
mp3tag. If the filenames are not sensible you'll have to do some
 typing.

Will EAC do the trick? If not I'll look into the others. thanks

[SlimDevices: Touch] Clear Library and REscan Everything

2011-02-14 Thread souwalker

Hi

I have ripped 400+ out of my 800+ CD collection. All are ripped via
dbPoweramp and stored on my QNAP NAS. SB Server Software is installed
in the NAS.

I've noticed today that 2 of my Various Artist CDs are not appearing on
the db. I've clear and rescan at least twice and still no show.

I've checked the ID tag and I can confirm all are tagged as 'Various
Artists'.

The missing 2 CDs are from 2 different CDs with Disc 1 2.

I am tearing my hair out trying to sort this out. I have no issues with
single CDs.

Any clues?

Thanks
Patrick
