[SlimDevices: Touch] Setting a DNS - no easy way to change the Touch?

2012-10-24 Thread castalla

Is there really no easy way to set up a specific DNS address for the
Touch? I really don't want to have to reset and lose all the other
settings.

If you are not using dhcp - then edit Touch resolv.conf file.

2012-10-24 Thread Anton

Triode wrote:

Hi Triode

Firstly, thank you for your quick responses, and secondly, thanks a
stack for the awesome utility!

I think I mentioned in my first thread that I was using FLAC
predominantly/only. The hi-res files are also FLAC, purchased and
downloaded from Linn. From your previous responses to other queries,
I've ensured that in LMS the file-type for FLAC has the PCM option
changed to FLAC. It appears that EDO isn't able to see the TacT RCS when
I go into the advanced settings on the SBT, selecting the digital out
option. I'm using coax, not optical. Do you think that I should perhaps
update the firmware from 7.7.2 to 7.8 beta? I don't have any problems
playing audio files up to 96 kHz or internet radio stations with low
sampling rates; it's only files that are sampled at rates greater than
96 kHz these play slowly. I've been using Logitech's
Squeezeboxes/Slimdevices for ages, plugged directly into the S/PDIF
input of the RCS 2.2 without any problems, and now, after upgrading with
the EDO firmware, the sound has improved so that my listening experience
has benefited even more. Thank you, once again. I can happily listen to
44,1 kHz and hi-res files at up to 96 kHz, but would love to hear for
myself if the higher resolutions sound even better, so I would really
appreciate it if I can get my SBT to output the 192 kHz files and not
down-sample them to 96 kHz and slow speed, as it's presently doing.

What I do is
1. Enable the DHCP server of the router.
2. Set the DHCP lease to infinity so they never expire - this is the
very nearly the same as static as there are no lease renewals
3. Change the DNS address in the router DHCP server to use OpenDNS so
the router gives the OpenDNS address to all devices which make a DHCP
request.

Maybe this is not what you are asking, but I set a fixed IP for my TOUCH
(all my SB players and controller). Temporarily turn off DHCP on router.
then go through network setup on TOUCH. It will fail to get an IP
address then offer up manual way of adding. I use:

IP: 192.168.1.15 (router is 192.168.1.1 and DHCP range for me is .100
to .254), just needs to be outside that range and above .1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS1: 8.8.8.8 (this is google public DNS
DNS2: 8.8.4.4
DNS3: 192.168.1.1

when done, then turn router's DHCP server back to ON.

Don't think that is possible without changing the LMS code.

It all looks too complicated for me, then!

All I want is that I can use the iPlayer link for BBC World Service -
this always fails, and I have to use the Tunein link.

That may be totally unrelated to DNS. But try the fixed IP approach I

Why didn't you say this in the first place.

A while ago, I did a bit of checking about problems playing World
Service flash stream and IIRC it looked like a bug or incompatibility
between the BBC Flash server and the iPlayer implementation of Flash. I
didn't have time to look deeper.

The work around is to set up a Favorite using the non Flash stream.

I had a look at the existing interfaces file - but was thrown by the

This is the interfaces file of my statically conected Touch using
ethernet .

Code:

  auto lo
  iface lo inet loopback

  auto eth0
  iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.15
network 192.168.1.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
  netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1
dns 192.168.1.1
up echo 'nameserver 192.168.1.1' /etc/resolv.conf

dns entry(ies) and the echo to resolv.conf could be whatever you fancy
.

If you fail then just redo or repair the network in the settings and the
file will be wiped , you don't have to do the whole factory sreset.

But i do think BPA's advice is best to track down the root cause
directly if that suggested logg could bring some info . Before messing
up your network

But as you see my SSID is Liogor you seems to have two so you have 3
wlan interfaces specified ,you been connecting somewhere else to so it
might be ok with that?

Connectify-me seems to be a PC software for sharing a wlan directly so
it probably it's SSID to :

iface *SpeedTouch567D9A* inet dhcp
script /etc/network/udhcpc_action
iface *Connectify-me* inet dhcp
script /etc/network/udhcpc_action
iface *FTE-FEA2* inet dhcp
script /etc/network/udhcpc_action

I think the *bolded* is your routers SSID's the unused interfaces could
possibly be removed .

Note the syntax iface ssid inet dhcp or iface ssid inet static .

Hmm wish I could have your machine to tinker with :)

Ok If a crude sketch of something that could work re static IP (note
that you must set the DHCP pool in the router to not use these addresses
)

Code:

  auto lo
  iface lo inet loopback

  mapping wlan0
script /etc/network/if_mapping

  auto wlan0=FTE-FEA2
  iface FTE-FEA2 inet static
address 192.168.x.y
network 192.168.x.0
broadcast 192.168.x.255
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.x.1
dns z.z.z.z
up echo 'nameserver z.z.z.z' /etc/resolv.conf

Replace x.y.z with what you see fit gateway is your routers ip here is
your hint to the value of x it usually 1 or 0 in a home network .

Have a peak inside /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf here is the WPA passkeys

*gulp* I'll drink my tea and hide during the proceedings , if you do
reset use garys suggestion of temporarily disable the dhcp on the router
to force a static set-up (you the turn on the dhcp again )

If you figure a working setup copy it to txt files if you for some
reason have to reset just copy paste back your static setup afterwards
.

Code:

  # reboot

you guess reboots it ,

but i still thinks bpa got the hang on this issue..

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Setting a DNS - no easy way to change the Touch?

2012-10-24 Thread castalla

In fact, I'm trying to sort out a couple of issues at the same time -
bad move, I know, confounding variables!

The main issue is that I have a dns redirect on the router. If the
router goes down and restarts, then the dns redirect has to be
re-authorised. If this happens when I'm not around then all the radios
fail to connect to the Beeb, causing moans and groans from others! So,
I want to redirect the radios to a standard dns.

The World Service issue, I accept, is probably something else.

Don't worry, I accept all responsibility for any messups!

Thanks for the advice.

I'll report back on the outcome - probably tomorrow.

so it seems that a fixed ip that uses a permanent IP, gateway, subnet
and DNS (like the google public 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4) is perfect for you.
Nothing about router reboot will affect this.

Why not just use OpenDNS for your whole network? Set it up in the DHCP
server.

Moving the static IPs up in the hundreds and re-adjusting the DHCP pool

Tip: I didn't find a way of manually changing the IPs on the TOUCH and
radios, so I temporarily disabled DCHP on the router and following a
reset of the devices, they prompt for an IP address. Once set, renabled
DCHP pool and rebooted the whole system including router and hey ho.

You can also configure Reserved DHCP at your router if you just want a
fixed IP for your device.

But you would actually still rely on both the dhcp server and client to
work properly to get that same ip.

reserved is not quite the same as fixed (where one enters IP, gateway,
subnet, and DNS). This is because even with reserved IP address, SB
players can sometimes stumble with DNS access. I don't understand the
technical aspects, but something related to decisions made by designers
about how the SB players deal with DNS that is not as flexible as some
other network devices. Plus one can add other DNS addresses other than
the router itself (google public DNS: 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4)

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] connection reset by local host when switching player on Spotify and WiMP

2012-10-24 Thread Fermate

Today I decided to do some structured testing.

I reset all my players and start playing music at them simultaneously.
To my surprise it all went well!
I played different radio stations, different music from WiMP, and local
MP3 files stored on the server in a mix.
Even some tunes from my old playlists with Spotify entries played (even
If I have no subscription anymore?)
Then suddenly one of the players got a #8220;connection reset by local
host#8221;
After that it would not play any more Internet radio or WiMP. Just local
MP3 files.

I then increased the #8220;buffer length for Internet radio#8221; at
the server, and also the #8220;Wait time for radio station#8221; and
reset all the players and started up radio on all.
It went good for a long time and I thought that I have solved the
problem and stopped all the players but one.
After some time I tried to start again but now I got the
#8220;connection reset..#8221; error again #61516;
But not on the playser that had been playing all the time.
Maybe this is a clue?
Conclusion so far:
The problem is not connected to switching player.
When a player have had one error it will NOT get back to normal without
a reset
You can always play local MP3 files so it must be related to some
network thing

More testing later:
Please share your own testing

 Sorry!

To enable logging use the LMS web interface. Settings/Advanced/Logging
Set the plugin.bbciplayer.rtmp to INFO and click Apply.
Then try playing the BBC station and then look at the log file to see if
there are interesting entries.

If the source files are flaces, do you have the flac native setting
enabled in settings, file types?

Okay - fixed address now set.

I messed up the interfaces edit! So, I had to do the DHCP disable and
