There’s a simple solution- drop Tidal and get Qobuz. MQA can never be
better than true hires. That’s what I did and I do have an MQA capable
DAC.

The "pin size" has nothing to do with the electrical output of the power
supply. You could have easily destroyed your Squeezebox by finding a
power supply with the right "pin size" that put out too much voltage.
You need to be careful to match output voltage and amperage in addition
to the "pin size" when selecting a replacement power supply.

The Node2i supports MQA in two different ways. If you're using the
digital output to an outboard DAC, it does the first unfold to 88/96kHz.
If that digital stream is fed to an MQA DAC, then it will do the second
unfold. The way I use it it only does the first unfold.

The Node2i fully supports MQA on its Analogue outputs, which gives you
full MQA decoding without any external DACs. In this configuration it
seems like quite a bargain. I haven't tried this since my amps have only
digital inputs. (Note to self - get out an old amplifier and try the
Node 2i Analog outputs)

Some Tidal MQA titles seem to definitely sound better than the ripped CD
versions (for example Enya Dark Sky Island). Others titles I can't tell
any difference. A possible cause is that the MQA/high resolution
versions have been mastered differently than the CD versions.

I have 4 Touch and a Radio, which I still use, but for Christmas I got
myself a Bluesound Node 2i. On CD quality material it sounds the same,
but it does have built-in MQA decoding for Tidal. I like the plethora of
BluOS control apps, but there's support for only limited metadata tags.
Cataloging and searching seems much faster than LMS, and no separate
computer is needed to run LMS as long as your music is available on a
NAS or USB drive plugged into the Node 2i. It also supports AirPlay and
a ton of other streaming services.

If you already have an MQA DAC you're using with your Touch, there won't
be any improvement in sound quality with the Node 2i. I find it faster
and more convenient to use.

If #1 doesn't work try #2 temporarily. If that fixes the SBT then it's
2.4G interference from the extender. Try moving the extender somewhere
else. I also didn't see in the extender manual if you could change the
2.4G channel the extender is using, but if you can try that too.

Referring to Chapter 3 of the extender's user guide:

1) Is the extender set to the same SSID as the SBT? If so try changing
the SSID on the extender to something else so the SBT won't try to
connect to it.

2) If that doesn't work, try turning off the 2.4G network on the
extender so it's only extending the 5G network (assuming you have a 5G
router)

Good luck,

I've diagrammed out your system and I'm pretty confident that the
router-as-a-switch still has the DHCP server enabled. It should be
disabled.

If you switch both SBTs and the LMS PC to wifi connecting to the living

It will take me a while to absorb your entire configuration, but with
regards to your "router-as-a-switch"

1) Make certain the "DHCP server" functionality is disabled.
2) Make certain there's nothing plugged into the WAN port.

After making these changes and rebooting the router and audio PC, run
"ipconfig /all". Hopefully the ipv4 address will now be on the same
subnet as the SBT.

Your LMS PC is 192.168.1.100, so the SBT and PC are on two different
subnetworks. I'm surprised that the LMS PC can ping the SBT, and
wouldn't be at all surprised if the SBT can't see the PC, although I
don't know much about the LMS network architecture.

If I were debugging this I'd work on finding out why the SBT doesn't
have a 192.168.1.* IP address. Routers normally assign IP addresses -
how many routers do you have and how are they connected to the two
networks?

To be clear, you're now running your bedroom SBT and LMS PC on the main
network, not the second network?

In any case, can the LMS PC see the bedroom SBT?

1) On the bedroom SBT, go to Settings->Advanced->Squeezebox
Information->Squeezebox Touch Information and write down the IP field.
It should be something like 192.168.1.100.

2) Go to the LMS PC, open a command prompt, and enter "ping ", where
is the number you got from the SBT.

3) Tell us what happens.

4) While you have the LMS PC command prompt open, you might as well run
"ipconfig /all" and post the results of that command too.

I suspect you're the only person in the world who doesn't run LMS/SBT on
their main network. You already have your main network (ISP drop) in the
bedroom, just use that. Run whatever malware/antivirus protection you
use on your main computer on your LMS PC. LMS doesn't use that much
network bandwidth and I doubt you'll ever get dropouts.

I intended to include all RAID configurations in my comment.

Regarding (1) I just upgraded from 3TB to 4TB drives (main + 2 backup)
and it took about 24 hours to copy the data and another 24 to verify. My
music was available all the time. The ability of to extend the RAID
array doesn't do anything to extend your backup NAS unless it's a RAID
too.

Regarding (2) You're doing an automated backup daily, as do I, so the
most I can lose without RAID is whatever I did that day.

My concern is that RAID tends to make one complacent. You have your
configuration under control, but I wonder what you'd really lose if you
weren't using RAID with the associated extra hardware and energy costs.

I rip with dBPowerAmp on Windows 10 and just set the output path to

I left the CD drive out of my VortexBox to reduce power consumption. I'm

Option 6 - install VortexBox on a old PC, or a new low power
consumption PC if you want to spend some money.
http://wiki.vortexbox.org/
VortexBox is a Linux install that includes NAS and LMS. I've been using
it for years and it's hassle free and there's a large supportive
community.

You DO NOT want RAID. That only protects from hardware failure. It will
not protect you from accidental deletion, file system corruption or
ransomware. You want regular OFFLINE backups to multiple drives.

went OK until I tried to find ickStream under "My Apps" on the Touch -

I could play ickStream from the Touch using the web interface of my

But, the display on the Touch didn't update, and for a while there
wasn't even a frozen progress bar showing. The music did play (Pink

sequence of "GetStream Failed" with a Tidal URL, then it skipped to
track 17, played it, and then quit completely.

I'm in Washington State, USA. It may just be an internet thing, but

Googling shows that 192.168.15.2 is associated with the Vonage box.

Try
1) turn off/unplug everything connected to the Linksys router
2) turn off the squeezebox
3) power cycle the linksys router
4) turn on the squeezebox and reconnect the wireless to the Linksys
5) Check the network settings on the Squeezebox. They should be
IP=192.168.1.100 and DNS = 192.168.1.1.

Report back if they aren't.
Note that you're not connected to the internet in this test, so the
Squeezebox won't connect to anything the the router.

I would check the health of the hard drive. I'd had hard drives getting
ready to fail that would lock up for a few seconds on access, get some
data, and then lock up again on the next access.

Try rebooting the Vortexbox. If it takes an unusually long time this
would be an indication of hard drive problems or file system
corruption.
It's also possible that a reboot will fix the problem if the file system
is corrupted, since a scan is run on boot.

1) "Choose Player" should be set to "Squeezebox Touch"
2) The "Vortexbox" player plays though the sound card of the Vortexbox
PC.
3) Do not synchronize. This will play the same music through all
synchronized devices, and is not needed for your setup
4) Logitech Media Server MUST BE running on the Vortexbox before you can
select the Vortexbox as your music source under the "My Music" menu on
the Squeezebox. (Logitech Media Server is the brains behind the
Squeezebox - you have to have one running somewhere before you can play
anything on the Touch. Somewhere might be the Vortexbox, another local
PC you've installed LMS on, or MySqueezebox.com global LMS server).

Be very careful with the Monarchy products. I tried a DIP 2496
upsampler with my SB3 and almost destroyed my speakers.

The problem is that if the DIP loses input lock it outputs digital
noise at full volume. In the case of the SB3, if the network connection
dropped so would the digital output.

According to Monarchy, the unit was working as designed - but not
suitable use with a wireless media streamer!

The Touch has a very different architecture than the SB3, so it may not
have the same problem.

That said, whether or not an anti-jitter device will make a difference
is entirely up to your DAC. The Touch digital output is very good, so
in all likelyhood such a device will add jitter, not remove it.

I have used an Apogee Big Ben on the output of the Touch and there was
a small improvement, but that's a device that costs 5x what the Touch
does.

I ran the VortexBox software (Linux-based) on a slow-ish computer with
512Mb RAM and it wasn't very nice to use- I upgraded the memory to 1GB
and it got a lot faster.

If you want to run XP instead of the VortexBox image, I suspect it
would work in 512Mb, but the response of the web GUI might be pretty
bad. If you don't use the Web GUI it might work OK. How much RAM is in
your wife's netbook?

Yes, with 2 caveats:

1) It needs more memory - probably 1 GB. Since it has 4 memory slots,
so that will cost another $30 or so.

2) The Vostro is a business machine and may have a relatively noisy fan
- so you should have a backup plan to put it outside the listening room

You should have exactly one primary partition.

It should show you how the disk is partitioned. There should only be 1
partition and it should be a physical partition.

If not, just delete all partitions and then recreate 1 physical
partition formatted NTFS.

Be aware that the default partition type for Easus Partition Manager is
LOGICAL, not PHYSICAL, which is how I found this bug in the first place
:-)

There is an open bug that this error occurs for external drives that
have a logical partition as the first partition instead of a physical
partition, regardless of what file system they are formatted in. So
check and make sure that there's only one partition on the drive and
it's physical.

That's because the output isn't a stream of 1's and 0's - it's a
high-frequency analog signal representing square waves which in turn
represent 1's and 0's. And even worse, it includes timing signals which
need to be precise in the picosecond range. Being an analog
representation of a square wave, rise time, overshoot, jitter (how
precisely the embedded clock is recovered is recovered), impedance, and
other signal characteristics can influence the "quality" of the digital
output.

Stop downloading programs now!

The SqueezeCenter setting for iTunes is to use an existing iTunes
library, which you obviously don't have. I would just uninstall iTunes
if I were you.

Squeezebox Server can transmit almost any file format to the Touch -
you don't need any extra programs.

What you do need to do is to put all your music files under a single
folder on your PC (using subfolders to organize is OK), then open the
Squeezebox Server web interface.

Then go to settings (button on bottom right), "basic settings" tab. Use
the browse button my the "Music Folder" field to find your music folder.
After you have it set, press the "Rescan" button at the bottom of the
page.

In a few minutes, the Touch should be able to access and play all the
music files in that folder.

One thing that needs to be emphasized - use an always-on music server
of adequate power - I can't recommend VortexBox on an old PC (or newer
low-power silent PC) highly enough.

The problem I experienced was connection problems if the server wasn't
available, and reconnecting after waking the server required
persistence and several minutes - one of those annoyances you're trying
to avoid.

I used to run SqueezeCenter on a regular PC that I would suspend at the
end of the day. Squeezeboxes can send Wake-On-Lan (WOL) to wake up
suspended servers but it never worked properly for that machine.

So I switched to a separate VortexBox machine and it worked beautifully
for weeks - press "play" and it played.

Then I got worried about power usage (40 watts for that particular PC,
some are as low as 20 watts), so I activated the "Server Power Control"
plugin for end-of-day power suspension and used the player's WOL
capability to wake up the server in the morning.

This worked, but it took a couple of minutes to wake up and reconnect
in the morning - a delay I found so annoying that I turned off the
power plugin and now just run 24 hours a day.

With regards to running SqueezeCenter on a NAS - many here have
reported poor performance with some NAS units.
VortexBox is a much better solution. It also has a one-click software
"update" feature.

FWIW, the Vortexbox is hard-wired to the network, 4 of my 5 players are
wireless.

> Hope that makes sense! Many thanks. JC.

It depends on a number of things:
1) Does the laptop have a dual-core processor? If not, there might be
problems.
2) Is your music MP3, CD-quality FLAC, or Hi-resolution FLAC?
The bigger the music files, the more likelyhood of problems.

If you're using MP3, things will more likely be fine, regardless of the
speed of the hardware. If you're using CD-quality flac on a single-core
processor, there's a possiblility of music interruptions when running
CPU intensive applications. If you're using hi-res, you'll need at
least a dual core.

I use an old Dell desktop, 2.4GHz Pentium single-core with Windows XP,
to feed 96/24kHz FLAC files to my Touch. I pretty much can't do
anything else on the machine without interrupting the music.

I also have a dual-core 2.1GHz Pentium desktop running Windows 7 that
can serve CD-quality FLAC files. When running CPU intensive
applications (like ripping to MP3 files on iTunes) I would get
occasional interruptions in the music.

On the other hand, if you have an old PC (or can get one for $5 at a
garage sale like I did recently), and load VortexBox (a Linux-based
Squeezebox server) on it, you'll be set for anything you want to play.

Regards,
Kim

Think bigger - I have 3.7TB of compressed flac files, which requires

would require four more 2TB drives.

I've had good luck with the ActionTec MegaPlug A/V 200 (mbs) - pretty
much everything in the house, including 2 Touchs, are wired up with
them. I can stream 96/24 without any problem. (
http://www.amazon.com/Actiontec-MegaPlug-Powerline-Network-Adapter/dp/B001OOZ1X2
)

My sister has the ActionTec MegaPlug 85 (mbs) and I'm less impressed
with them.

One thing to keep in mind is that just like wi-fi, the transmission
speed decreases with difficulty - number of circuit hops, other
electrical interference on the powerline, etc. Also, you cannot use
them on surge-protected circuits and sometimes switching to an outlet
on an adjacent wall either improves or degrades the connection.
Fortunately things like extension cords and non-surge protected power
strips don't seem to have any effect on the transmission speed.

With the MegaPlug 200, my "speed" indicator is showing red (slow), but
the speed is still faster than wi-fi's best of 54mbs.

One thing I love about the MegaPlug - the connection is always
rock-solid even if the speed varies, there are no dropped connections
as is common with Wifi.

Good luck,
Kim

1) Yes - and you can play different selections or synchronize them -
your choice.

2)Try wireless first. I have the same setup and my kitchen Touch is
about 30' and one floor away from my access point. It works most of the
time, but occasionally complains about not being able to connect. That
said, wired is always best if you can arrange it.

3) Yes, you can manage any number of players on mysqueezebox.com - just
give them different names.

Kim

I can tell you that the stand-alone server does not work well with
96/24 FLAC (compression -5) files. There is a several second pause near
the beginning of each track. It starts to play for a oouple of seconds,
stops for about 5 seconds (presumably while rebuffering), and then
continues.

A 72 minute CD in WAV format is about 700MB. FLAC compression level 5
(the usual default), on the average, gets around 2:1 compression, so a
full-length CD in FLAC is about 350MB. Most CDs aren't 72 minutes long,
resulting in a smaller average size.

Yes, you should get around 3 CDs per gigabyte. A terabyte is enough for
about 3000 CDs. I have 4800 CDs on a 1.5TB drive and it's not full yet.

I have applied these mods, and several times when I go to use the
system it pretends to play (correct clock detected on S/PDIF out, track
position bar moving in the display), but there is digital silence.
Cycling the power on the Touch fixes it.

Has anyone else experienced this? It seems weird that it would be
related to the mods, but it did start happening after I installed
them.

Of course, my Touch could have gone buggy, too.

You are absolutely correct. Despite being a computer professional, I
still don't have a good working model of the interaction between
servers.

The SB3 is usually connected to mysqueezebox.com, which doesn't have
any "remote" settings. So I connected it to my local server, selected
the settings->player->SB3->remote tab and unchecked the "slim devices
remote codes" check box.

After that, I reconnected to mysqueezebox.com and sure enough, it now
ignores commands from the Boom remote.

Thanks for the reminder,

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Universal remote controls SB3 but not Touch

2010-08-16 Thread krochat

I bought my wife a Touch and gave her a Boom remote to use with it to
keep it simpler for her.

She has decided to use it in the kitchen, where it sits next to my SB3
with a audio selector switch to pick which SB to listen to.

The current issue is that when she uses the Boom remote to control the
Touch, it also controls the SB3. I now see that I can use the JVC
remote codes to control the SB3 independently of the Touch, but is
there a way to control the Touch using IR without also controlling the
SB3?

It seem redundant to have to ajacent squeezeboxen, but they are each
logged into separate mysqueezebox.com and last.fm accounts. I don't
know of a quick way to quickly change the "personal profile" of a SB,
so using both seems logical. Am I missing anything?

Thanks,
Kim

My experience was 2 minutes to rescan a drive with 3400 files, 90
minutes to rescan a drive with 38000 files. It's obviously not linear
with the number of files. While you can play music during the rescan,
the UI is pretty sluggish.

Sure, there are just lots of caveats:

1) Don't use Hi-Rez material - no higher than CD quality.
(because tinySC will stutter on hi-rez at default compression)
2) Don't have more than 10,000 files or so on the disk
(because initial scan and rescan times can be long)
3) Don't plan on swapping disks
(because rescan times can be long)
4) Don't use high FLAC compression levels
(the default of -5 works OK with CD quality material).
5) Playlists can't have more than 100 entries
6) If using a 2.5" USB hard drive, make sure it has adequate power.
7) There may still be a problem/bug with artwork disappearing - it
works for some folks.

Actually, the 750GB drive I mentioned is a "FLAC -0" experiment to see
if I can play 96/24 files off an attached hard drive. (Not
satisfactory, stuttered for a couple of seconds at the beginning of
each track unless played into from the previous track).

My actual library is split across two 2TB drives, each with at least
500GB free. I only had the patience to run the scan on one of the two

Correction - I had the number of files wrong - I was thinking of a
different drive. The correct number of files with "scan for new files
time" is:

USB-HD: 750GB 3.5" Seagate
Files: 3400
Scan time: 15 minutes (more or less, it was pretty quick)
Scan for new files time: 2 minutes

I was going to try swapping two USB drives in and out since my library
is too big to fit on one drive, but once I saw the 90 minute rescan
time after detaching the reattaching the first drive I abandoned that
idea.

I think there should be an option to disable or bypass the new file
scan once the database has been created. It could even prompt with
"scan for new files?" when a drive with an existing scan database has
been newly attached (or the Touch has been rebooted).

The NTFS formatted Samsung Story was also recognized by the Touch -
yippee.

I need to analyze the partition info for the failing drives - I think
it might be having a single logical partition as opposed to a single

I also got a pair of Samsung Story 2TB external drives today
specifically to use with the Touch. I opened one and it was formatted
FAT32, so I started a slow NTFS format that's been running for hours.

After discovering that I can't get the Touch to recognize any NTFS
partition, I opened the second drive and plugged it into the Touch. It
was recognized, but had no folders so I can't select it as a library.

I didn't even know that one could make a 2TB FAT32 partition, but maybe
that's my work-around.

It will be interesting to see if the NTFS one fails, since the two
drives are identical except for patition format.

I'll post an update late tomorrow.

They are all 3.5" drives with their own power supply. One interesting
thing from the link you posted:

"Do not Reuse Old Hard Drives

Drives with these characteristics are NOT recommended:
PATA drives with PATA-USB adapters"

The first two drives were PATA (not that I see that should make any
difference), but the third one I tried is a year-old SATA drive.

The local squeezeserver is running 7.5.0 - r30464, April 1 (fooled
me).

I just tried a 3rd hard drive with the same error - 1TB WD Caviar Green
in a CP tech enclosure. I'm using a different cable with each drive, so
it's not the cable, and all the drives work fine on XP and Windows 7.

It updated itself to the firmware version you state when I first
connected it to the network (wired) and myqueezebox.com this morning.

I've been using it with a local squeezeserver since I can't get USB to
work and that works OK.

I did try a random FAT32 4GB flash drive, which it did mount and start
Tiny Squeezeserver and I could browse the folders - no music on it
though.

[SlimDevices: Touch] File System Not Recognized?

2010-04-15 Thread krochat

I just plugged in my 750GB Seagate drive (in a Ximeta Netdisk enclosure)
into the Touch I received today. It recognized a USB device and spun the
hourglass for a while, then came up with a message "File System Not
Recognized. The file system must be FAT, FAT32, NTFS, or ext2."

We, all fine and dandy except that the disk IS formatted as NTFS and
has one logical partition. I ran chkdsk on the drive and everything was
OK. It has 2300 files, and is about a third full.

Has anyone else seen this or have any ideas?

Thanks,
Kim

I was assuming that if you switched drives that the Touch would rescan
everything on the "new" drive, causing delays and extra drive wear.

If switching drives really works without excessive overhead and music
on the new drive is available in a few seconds, I may just do that with
my current USB enclosures rather than trying to build that 3.0TB USB
disk array I was asking about on another thread.

FWIW, I've had a pre-order with Crutchfield since November. Today the
order status has gone from "preorder" to "backorder". I contacted them
and they said they had no ETA for delivery.

[SlimDevices: Touch] 3.0TB USB drive on Touch?

2010-04-06 Thread krochat

I'm considering building a 3.0TB external USB drive for use with the
Touch. This would done with a dual USB enclosure that has support for
SPAN/BIG and/or RAID 0 and two 1.5TB drives. The controller in the
enclosure would present a single 3.0TB partition to the Touch.

It appears that I can format a single 3.0TB partition with either NTFS
(using GPT on Windows 7) or with Linux ext2/3.

Does anyone know of either of these file system formats will work with
the Touch?

Thanks,
Kim

I note that the buglist has been pruned from 30+ a week ago to 7 now.

I'm still hoping for April 1.

What happens to the Touch font size if you're using a Controller, Web

will give you $170 for your non-existant brand-new Touch. I'd be willing
to out-bid them!

You can use the free DD-WRT firmware with many cheap wireless routers
to create a wireless bridge - see http://www.dd-wrt.com/ . I used to use
this with an old Linksys WRT-54G router until the router gave up the
ghost.

I'm currently using 6 Actiontec MegaPlug A/V 200 adapters
( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001OOZ1X2 ) and can recommend them
highly. You probably won't get 200mbs, but you will get a rock-solid
connection at wireless-G speeds at least. I've been recommending them to
my relatives and they work well for them too.
