You could have easily destroyed your Squeezebox by finding a power supply with the right "pin size" that put out too much voltage. If you're using the digital output to an outboard DAC, it does the first unfold to 88/96kHz. If that digital stream is fed to an MQA DAC, then it will do the second unfold. The way I use it it only does the first unfold. The Node2i fully supports MQA on its Analogue outputs, which gives you full MQA decoding without any external DACs. In this configuration it seems like quite a bargain. I haven't tried this since my amps have only digital inputs. (Note to self - get out an old amplifier and try the Node 2i Analog outputs) Some Tidal MQA titles seem to definitely sound better than the ripped CD versions (for example Enya Dark Sky Island). Others titles I can't tell any difference. A possible cause is that the MQA/high resolution versions have been mastered differently than the CD versions. celo wrote: > Is there anything better than SBT currently? The technology has improved > a lot so there must be something better, right? No? I have 4 Touch and a Radio, which I still use, but for Christmas I got myself a Bluesound Node 2i. On CD quality material it sounds the same, but it does have built-in MQA decoding for Tidal. I like the plethora of BluOS control apps, but there's support for only limited metadata tags. Cataloging and searching seems much faster than LMS, and no separate computer is needed to run LMS as long as your music is available on a NAS or USB drive plugged into the Node 2i. It also supports AirPlay and a ton of other streaming services. If you already have an MQA DAC you're using with your Touch, there won't be any improvement in sound quality with the Node 2i. I tried a DIP 2496 upsampler with my SB3 and almost destroyed my speakers. The problem is that if the DIP loses input lock it outputs digital noise at full volume. In the case of the SB3, if the network connection dropped so would the digital output. According to Monarchy, the unit was working as designed - but not suitable use with a wireless media streamer! The Touch has a very different architecture than the SB3, so it may not have the same problem. That said, whether or not an anti-jitter device will make a difference is entirely up to your DAC. The Touch digital output is very good, so in all likelyhood such a device will add jitter, not remove it. I have used an Apogee Big Ben on the output of the Touch and there was a small improvement, but that's a device that costs 5x what the Touch does. That's because the output isn't a stream of 1's and 0's - it's a high-frequency analog signal representing square waves which in turn represent 1's and 0's. And even worse, it includes timing signals which need to be precise in the picosecond range. Being an analog representation of a square wave, rise time, overshoot, jitter (how precisely the embedded clock is recovered is recovered), impedance, and other signal characteristics can influence the "quality" of the digital output. The SqueezeCenter setting for iTunes is to use an existing iTunes library, which you obviously don't have. I would just uninstall iTunes if I were you. Squeezebox Server can transmit almost any file format to the Touch - you don't need any extra programs. What you do need to do is to put all your music files under a single folder on your PC (using subfolders to organize is OK), then open the Squeezebox Server web interface. Then go to settings (button on bottom right), "basic settings" tab. Use the browse button my the "Music Folder" field to find your music folder. After you have it set, press the "Rescan" button at the bottom of the page. In a few minutes, the Touch should be able to access and play all the music files in that folder. The problem I experienced was connection problems if the server wasn't available, and reconnecting after waking the server required persistence and several minutes - one of those annoyances you're trying to avoid. I used to run SqueezeCenter on a regular PC that I would suspend at the end of the day. Squeezeboxes can send Wake-On-Lan (WOL) to wake up suspended servers but it never worked properly for that machine. So I switched to a separate VortexBox machine and it worked beautifully for weeks - press "play" and it played. Then I got worried about power usage (40 watts for that particular PC, some are as low as 20 watts), so I activated the "Server Power Control" plugin for end-of-day power suspension and used the player's WOL capability to wake up the server in the morning. This worked, but it took a couple of minutes to wake up and reconnect in the morning - a delay I found so annoying that I turned off the power plugin and now just run 24 hours a day. With regards to running SqueezeCenter on a NAS - many here have reported poor performance with some NAS units. VortexBox is a much better solution. It also has a one-click software "update" feature. FWIW, the Vortexbox is hard-wired to the network, 4 of my 5 players are wireless. -- krochat -- iZotope SRC (96kHz offline upsampler) -> Touch -> TacT RCS 2.2X -> Convolver PC (w/Acourate filter)-> Apogee Big Ben -> (TacT S2150 -> Vandersteen 3a Signature + TacT S2150 -> TacT W210) krochat's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6579 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84267 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Or do I just have music in a dedicated > folder, and it plays regardless? > > Hope that makes sense! Many thanks. JC. It depends on a number of things: 1) Does the laptop have a dual-core processor? If not, there might be problems. 2) Is your music MP3, CD-quality FLAC, or Hi-resolution FLAC? The bigger the music files, the more likelyhood of problems. If you're using MP3, things will more likely be fine, regardless of the speed of the hardware. If you're using CD-quality flac on a single-core processor, there's a possiblility of music interruptions when running CPU intensive applications. If you're using hi-res, you'll need at least a dual core. I use an old Dell desktop, 2.4GHz Pentium single-core with Windows XP, to feed 96/24kHz FLAC files to my Touch. I pretty much can't do anything else on the machine without interrupting the music. I also have a dual-core 2.1GHz Pentium desktop running Windows 7 that can serve CD-quality FLAC files. When running CPU intensive applications (like ripping to MP3 files on iTunes) I would get occasional interruptions in the music. On the other hand, if you have an old PC (or can get one for $5 at a garage sale like I did recently), and load VortexBox (a Linux-based Squeezebox server) on it, you'll be set for anything you want to play. I've had good luck with the ActionTec MegaPlug A/V 200 (mbs) - pretty much everything in the house, including 2 Touchs, are wired up with them. I can stream 96/24 without any problem. ( http://www.amazon.com/Actiontec-MegaPlug-Powerline-Network-Adapter/dp/B001OOZ1X2 ) My sister has the ActionTec MegaPlug 85 (mbs) and I'm less impressed with them. One thing to keep in mind is that just like wi-fi, the transmission speed decreases with difficulty - number of circuit hops, other electrical interference on the powerline, etc. Also, you cannot use them on surge-protected circuits and sometimes switching to an outlet on an adjacent wall either improves or degrades the connection. Fortunately things like extension cords and non-surge protected power strips don't seem to have any effect on the transmission speed. With the MegaPlug 200, my "speed" indicator is showing red (slow), but the speed is still faster than wi-fi's best of 54mbs. One thing I love about the MegaPlug - the connection is always rock-solid even if the speed varies, there are no dropped connections as is common with Wifi. She has decided to use it in the kitchen, where it sits next to my SB3 with a audio selector switch to pick which SB to listen to. The current issue is that when she uses the Boom remote to control the Touch, it also controls the SB3. I now see that I can use the JVC remote codes to control the SB3 independently of the Touch, but is there a way to control the Touch using IR without also controlling the SB3? It seem redundant to have to ajacent squeezeboxen, but they are each logged into separate mysqueezebox.com and last.fm accounts. I don't know of a quick way to quickly change the "personal profile" of a SB, so using both seems logical. Am I missing anything? USB-HD: 2TB 3.5" Samsung Files: 38000 Scan time: 9 hrs Scan results: completed, but no artwork for some reason Scan for new files time: 90 minutes Firmware: 7.5.0 r8673 USB-HD: 750GB 3.5" Seagate Files: 7000 Scan time: 15 minutes (more or less, it was pretty quick) Scan results: completed Scan for new files time: didn't try Firmware: 7.5.0 r8673 I was going to try swapping two USB drives in and out since my library is too big to fit on one drive, but once I saw the 90 minute rescan time after detaching the reattaching the first drive I abandoned that idea. I think there should be an option to disable or bypass the new file scan once the database has been created. [SlimDevices: Touch] File System Not Recognized?
I just plugged in my 750GB Seagate drive (in a Ximeta Netdisk enclosure) into the Touch I received today. It recognized a USB device and spun the hourglass for a while, then came up with a message "File System Not Recognized. The file system must be FAT, FAT32, NTFS, or ext2." We, all fine and dandy except that the disk IS formatted as NTFS and has one logical partition. I ran chkdsk on the drive and everything was OK. It has 2300 files, and is about a third full. You can use the free DD-WRT firmware with many cheap wireless routers to create a wireless bridge - see http://www.dd-wrt.com/ . I used to use this with an old Linksys WRT-54G router until the router gave up the ghost. You probably won't get 200mbs, but you will get a rock-solid connection at wireless-G speeds at least. I've been recommending them to my relatives and they work well for them too.
