[Trisquel-users] your-freedom and your-privacy for Trisquel ?
https://www.reddit.com/r/privacytoolsIO/comments/3sgikq/parabola_as_arch_linux_alternative/ I thought this was cool ! I'd love that for Trisquel. Not in the defeault install, but in the repo, that would be nice. I wonder how complicated that would be (maybe there are complications since both aren't based on the same system).
Re: [Trisquel-users] EU: All your internet are belong to us
Good point: Respect among community members Discrimination -- Do not discriminate against people based on age, gender, sex, sexual orientation, disability, religion, ideology, ideas, social class, nationality, race, intelligence, or any analogous grounds. Profanity -- Do not curse or use hard language here. Social norms differ from place to place; hard language can deter people from our community. Incivility -- Do not insult others here. Disagree and challenge ideas instead. Does that go against free-speech? If it does, I'm fine with that. I definitely don't mind giving so much voice to intolerant propaganda. I mean What's happening in Croatia or Poland is not something I want to encourage in the name of free speech. It makes me think about that Voltaire quote. Wait a second: if you want to quote Voltaire on free speech, here’s something that he did write once, in his 1763 Treatise on Toleration: “The supposed right of intolerance is absurd and barbaric. It is the right of the tiger; nay, it is far worse, for tigers do but tear in order to have food, while we rend each other for paragraphs.” That’s something probably everybody on the Internet could stand to think about, ourselves included.if you want to quote Voltaire on free speech, here’s something that he did write once, in his 1763 Treatise on Toleration: “The supposed right of intolerance is absurd and barbaric. So, what about the actual text? How loosely defined is it, in practice?

Re: [Trisquel-users] EU: All your internet are belong to us
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_speech See the limitations part. Also I find interesting that the right to privacy (which I value a whole lot) is a restriction of free speech. Depending on the context (as nearly always), I'm perfectly fine with that. Allowing unrestricted free speech is at least as dangerous as heavily restricted free speech. Like many things in real life, it's too complex to just be either all black or all white, but more like shades of grey.
Re: [Trisquel-users] EU: All your internet are belong to us
Is this all you got about this law? Any source, something? Anyway, I second this thread to at least be moved to the Troll hole. It has nothing to do with Trisquel or free software.
Re: [Trisquel-users] EU: All your internet are belong to us
You mean those things about copyright infringement and intellectual property? By definition, they fit free software way more than that "imaginary" EU bill. But let's say it does belong in the main forum for a second, because I'd like you to answer the other part of my statement. I say "Imaginary" because this is the 3rd time I'm pointing out that the discussion revolves around nothing concrete. Would you care to provide some actual sources? Because I don't see the point of going on if it's a philosophical debate about the concept of free speech.
Re: [Trisquel-users] netinstall; first timer's question
So I'd have to edit my .Xinitrc every time I want to switch. But at this point, installing LightDM or similar would be easier. Hey thanks for the link, it makes me think I need to comment my .xinitrc file (and others). This helps understand what happens. It makes me think that I want to write a startup installation script, just like Crunchbang had (has, I think it still exist with a new name). But I'm not completely done building the system that fits my needs. Hopefully it won't take me too much time anymore.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel is about ethics not technology or innovation
It's about getting the newest cool toy, it's very human. But among people who actually get the job done, they sometimes work with very archaic/simple tools and methods. So it's a fact that Trisquel will always be a bit late. But at least you know what's in there, and why it matters to you. Plus the programs who need a more regular update are taken care of, if I'm not mistaken. I probably misunderstand the difference between an update and getting the next version. But my point is, once you got the tool that fits your needs, don't focus so much on it, just use it for your goals. That's why it's useful, and not a time waster/diversion. Trisquel isn't perfect, but it's pretty solid, and does that while respecting the user.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
I commented the wlan related lines in /etc/network/interfaces and made a reboot. Still no grub, still having a delay. Once booted, I tried your suggestion, and I'm still stuck at sudo dhclient. after a minute or two, I still have no wifi up. I'll uncomment back my interfaces file now. However, wicd-ncurses seems interesting. I mean I like the wpa_supplican't text-based wifi management, but I have no idea about how to manage more than one network. I think I'll quickly document what I need to do from scratch, and reinstall the whole thing again. I'll start to try and fix grub if needed. Just before that, I want to really master wifi networking. Maybe too much minimalism/optimization is counterproductive. Depending on its size, a simpler GUI interface might be better, specially for joining a new network.'ll try network-manager
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
I'm in the process of reinstalling the whole thing with encryption, but I can tell you this: seeing that grub wasn't displayed, I went in Synaptics and saw that grub 'not grub-pc) wasn't installed. I installed it, but nothing changed. Also, the grub parameters are identical to the ones on my other machine. Anyway, in a few hours, I'll see if grub is displayed. if not, I'll see if grub-pc is installed. And then I'll try to modify the grub parameters. Or maybe should I do that first?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
/etc/network/interfaces was the culprit. 18 seconds from boot only now (still no grub displayed though). I used ADFENO/root_vegetable method to get ethernet up. I installed wicd. Job done. No more plain wpa_supplicant if I can avoid it. Thanks a lot for the help ! I'll write down all I need for a super lean but easy to setup netinstall, and reinstall the whole thing, with the focus on grub.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
Ah, so that's the reason for the absence of those folders. Thanks for the info. Ok, so let's recap: For eth0, I've written 2 lines in /etc/network/interfaces. It seems I can also make it work with a few commands. Now I'm installing wicd, thus I need to put the interfaces file back to what it was. This should allow me to manage all my interfaces and connections without headaches, hopefully. It's heavier than wpa_supplicant, but probably easier in the long run (more networks, no complex steps to remember...). Well, if I can install it, because there's a problem with Synaptic ("Glib-CRITICAL something. I'll try from the CLI). If satisfied with that networking aspect, I'll reinstall the whole thing from scratch and focus on the "absence" of grub. I have some other issues, like xbkcomp errors (but not affecting a thing), and xmodmap not working (I want to switch 2 keys, and maybe remap another one). grsecurity is probably overkill (very effective, but too much time to configure, I expect), so I'll focus on Firejail with Apparmor for now.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
Oh right, thanks, trisquel-base might be useful. Just for the sake of it, I'll see what packages it's made of, and pick the ones I really need.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
Thanks, I was wondering which was the smallest install between your suggestion (server and bitmap fonts) and this one: "sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends xorg". There must be a way to display the dependencies/the package contents in the CLI/tty.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
Nice, thanks! A bit more and I could live without Synaptics.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
Thanks! So that would be sudo ifconfig ethX up or sudo ifconfig "ethX" "up"? I just copied the content of interfaces from my main machine (without even checking the number of the eth interface, which would have probably been a bit troublesome on another network) auto ethX iface ethX inet dhcp If I understand properly, the dhclient command sets ethX as dhcp instead of nothing (not even a static IP address)? But it's very interesting (and needed, for identifying the interface's name) to see how to do so from commands only.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
It seems I have sudo (at least it responds when accessing files with vi), but my problem now is that I can't start X. When I try i3, it tells me it cannot open display. And I wonder if I need that "console environment" that is suggested at the install phase. I wonder what it provides. So if you know anything about this as well, I'm interested.
[Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
I just performed a fresh Netinstall on a 32bits machine (it worked at last), but this time without even a console environment (whatever that is). I find myself in something called tty1. I go for a "sudo apt-get update", which fails. I ping some websites, no positive results. I also tried while being plugged in with ethernet. Something interesting: when trying to locate my folders, all there is is the /home/user/, and that's all! Even when going back to /, I don't see much (I need to check again though). Any idea what to do next, and how?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
Yeah obviously I have everything at /.
Re: [Trisquel-users] EU: All your internet are belong to us
What EU law? I still don't see any source, therefore I can hardly judge whether it's right or wrong.
Re: [Trisquel-users] EU: All your internet are belong to us
Since I'm blinded by your brilliance (at avoiding to present sources), please help me find actual proof of what you're saying about that EU bill. Because I still don't see a damn source. Since you want to bring RMS in: When people talk about punishing "hate speech", they advocate censorship of opinions. Censorship is dangerous to society and democracy. And I can't disagree with that, yet I'd tell him that unrestricted free speech is just as dangerous to society and democracy. https://stallman.org/archives/2016-mar-jun.html#3_June_2016_%28Censorship_in_the_UK%29 And here's a source about that EU thing you're talking about: http://ec.europa.eu/justice/fundamental-rights/files/hate_speech_code_of_conduct_en.pdf You remind me of that Demolition Man movie which is Manichean (and extreme) as possible, in freedom and its opposite. It's all about balance, it's not all or nothing. It's contextual, not the same concept you apply "as is" any time, anywhere. The IT Companies also share the European Commission 's and EU Member States' com mitment to tackle illegal hate speech online. Illegal hate speech, as defined by the Framework Decision 2008/913/JHA of 28 November 2008 on combating certain forms and expressions of racism and xenophobia by means of criminal law and national laws transpos ing it, means all conduct publicly inciting to violence or hatred directed against a group of persons or a member of such a group defined by reference to race, colour, religion, descent or national or ethnic origin. The IT Companies and the European Commis sion also stress the need to defend the right to freedom of expression, which, as the European Court of Human Rights has stated, “is applicable not only to "information" or "ideas" that are favourably received or regarded as inoffensive or as a matter of i ndifference, but also to those that offend, shock or disturb the State or any sector of the population” . 1 This sounds perfectly reasonable to me. What matters is HOW they intend to do it. That's the difference between theory (or good intentions) and practice.
Re: [Trisquel-users] netinstall; first timer's question
Thankfully, for now I want to stick to one environment. But that means every time you want to switch to another environment, you have to edit that file?? Even if it's only commenting out a line, it's not the most practical. Maybe there's some kind of CLI (or tty, not sure about that) GDM version? That wouldn't surprise me.
Re: [Trisquel-users] EU: All your internet are belong to us
I see what you mean. But I don't see how hate speech has even a remote chance to be correct, anywhere, at any time. Let me rephrase that: I don't see how "attacks on a person or group on the basis of attributes such as gender, ethnic origin, religion, race, disability, or sexual orientation" can potentially be the correct way to go, in any context. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_speech I'm still thinking about this by the way. But right now I don't see how hate speech deserves a free pass. Specially when seeing the amount of it on the web.
Re: [Trisquel-users] netinstall; first timer's question
Definitely. In my experience, LightDM needs some tweaking but is functional out of the box. You indeed shouldn't need to manually start X in that case. I didn't know that startx could be problematic with more than one environment, thanks for the info.
Re: [Trisquel-users] netinstall; first timer's question
Will MATE launch automatically when I subsequently turn my computer on? No, you need to start X (I don't remember, but I think the command is "startx"). At least that's what I had to do with my i3wm install until I configured a file to make it start without my input. You'll definitely have a CLI with BASH, but you might have to "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install" some programs. No big deal. The problem I faced with my net install is that i3wm is really minimalist, so wifi, and making hard drives to mount/unmount/eject automatically (or close to that) was tough for me. But maybe the default MATE comes with lots of fully featured programs, or maybe you'll have to add some more programs, hopefully avoiding duplicates.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
I have GRUB_TIMEOUT set at 10, and GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT set at 0 (zero).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
This is one weird but pleasing Netinstall (less stuff install by default): - I have no GRUB displayed on startup (Synaptic shows some grub files, but grub isn't installed) - it takes very long between startup, and the tty login display. I suspect it's my wlan config that's doing this (didn't have such a delay at first). - no pulseaudio or alsa by default. - no gksudo installed. (though sudo -i seems to be better) But it seems I can get i3 running ok with really minimal programs: - a real Netinstal, not even a console environment - putting ethernet up in etc/network/interfaces (or the ADFENO way, thanks again) - adding wpa-supplicant with wlan ssid and psk - adding xorg with --no-install recommends - adding i3, adding my configuration files, xinitrc, profile, - adding a few programs for wallpaper, brightness, audio Anyway, I installed grub (which suggested to uninstall 3 grub related programs (grub2 something, for example), But still no grub displayed, and still that long delay on boot. Strange.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
Many thanks, I'll read and try right now.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
Ok, I'm finishing my netinstall, and grub (grub2) refuses to install. I choose to install it one the MBR (master boot record). After trying to execute grub-install, I got this: The execution of " grub-install /dev/sda " failed. This error is fatal. Then I can either continue and try to install lilo (if it works, didn't try yet), or continue without a bootloader. I'm not on Libreboot here, but I (mistakenly?) followed the steps here: https://libreboot.org/docs/gnulinux/encrypted_trisquel.html I suppose I could continue without a bootloader, or with lilo if it works (it suggests to install it either on the MBR or the new partition in case I want to use another bootloader). Most likely it would need to be on the MBR, but I'd rather have grub. I suppose I could manually boot, but I'm not sure. In doubt, I'll try this. But I'll wait for now. Any suggestions?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
I see, so both are used at different stages of the boot process. I commented the line containing the splash and quiet parameters, and now I still have the delay, and no grub displayed. All I have is a blinking cursor (a line) and I can write text if I want. But nothing else happens.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
I see, so both are used at different stages of the boot process. The way you describe it, it sounds like a safely editable "alias" (probably not the right word). I commented the line containing the splash and quiet parameters, and now I still have the delay, and no grub displayed. All I have is a blinking cursor (a line) and I can write text if I want. But nothing else happens.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
Still, this is weird. I must be doing something wrong, since I could have grub installed when the disk wasn't encrypted, with the full iso. Even with the netinstall, though grub wasn't displayed, I could boot when the disk wasn't encrypted. Though all I do is follow the Libreboot method to a point: I make a manual partitioning, encrypt the whole disk, LVM it, and voilà. Nothing special I think.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
yes, when the disk isn't encrypted. I just tried. I still can't make grub install work. I tried all the methods I know of. I think I'll stick with an unencrypted 32bits Trisquel install for now. At least I know this worked.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
yes, unfortunately I did just that. I'll try this now maybe: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/1414124
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
no luck :( I did that many times, it still stays on /dev/sda Then I tried to refuse the grub install on the MBR, which gave me the possibility to choose /dev/sdb instead. It properly launches on /dev/sdb, but still fails... The stick being in or out doesn't change a thing for me, whether it's sda or sdb. I really don't know what to do now.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
Noted, thank you. I'm redoing the install quickly, and since grub-install didn't want to install on either /dev/sda nor sdb, I'm seeing that my drive is sdXX_crypt. I'll try that if it still fails.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wacom tablets
Yes, and it's probably the better option, since it has an integrated animation program inside. The other one I was thinking of was Grafx2.
Re: [Trisquel-users] forced to Cisco proprietary
Basically, my idea was to separate your personal computing and data from anything Cisco. If you run a separated OS (or even several OS) in either: - a virtual machine - Wine, hardened preferably - or another computer, then even Javascript or the firmwares aren't much of an issue in terms of privacy. I'm not a fan of online services also because you can't study much when offline. If not needed, I wouldn't spend on Cisco hardware. You might be able to study most of the features on paper, and maybe there are ways to test it without owning one during the course. Plus if you have the cash for Cisco equipment, investing on a dedicated work/study laptop isn't a bad idea IMO. I'm not sure how Wine relates to mobility though. I hope this answers your question.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New ReTux Release and a Level Making Competition
This looks fun, yet the manual for level making is a bit overwhelming to me. Basically, I need to get Tiled, the game or the game demo, and get a specific file from the game that I can modify with Tiled? I didn't read it all, but it seems there is much more to it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wacom tablets
Pixel art programs are also worth it (I know 2 of them in the repo, can't remember the names right now).
Re: [Trisquel-users] forced to Cisco proprietary
What I would do in your boat: - Online services? $$$ and also javascript, most likely non-free. - Real Cisco equipment? Besides the money, is it required, or just recommended for the course? - Run Packet Tracer on Wine: sounds like an option, though I'd add some Apparmor and Firejail to Wine. - Run GNS3 an then use Cisco firmwares: why not. Dual boot is a possiblity. Also using another machine (an old one you don't use, a cheap one you can buy). I guess you won't be needing a monster CPU or RAM capacity. So I would probably use another dedicated machine, just for that. If that's not possible, I'd dual boot. Else, Wine, but I'd rather keep my personal stuff as separated as possible from that Cisco stuff.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to translate sentences
Maybe try to delete and reinstall again. I doubt just restating the computer would fix anything here.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Corrupted install
Maybe try PhotoRec first: PhotoRec is a companion program to TestDisk, also included in this Hive Five. Like TestDisk, this app is also devoid of a GUI, but likewise is quite powerful at file recovery. We're including PhotoRec independently of TestDisk because many users distinctly prefer PhotoRec as a safer alternative when deep disk recovery isn't necessary. This recovery tool won't mess with your partitions or help you rebuild your master boot record; it will, however, dive into your disks in a safe, read-only mode and ignore partitions and file systems in an effort to seek out your missing files. PhotoRec focuses on file types, is operating-system agnostic, and despite its name, isn't relegated to just photos. Overall, PhotoRec is a powerful tool for quickly and safely copying your deleted files to another disk. http://lifehacker.com/5237503/five-best-free-data-recovery-tools
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
Do I really need all these? I didn't read enough about partitioning, but it seems a separated boot partition is only interesting if running several OS. Not sure about the root partition though. Anyway, I tried an assisted, minimal install from the full iso (which is different from a real Netinstall since I didn't have to install killall this time, for instance). No encryption. I found out that grub was there, not showing because it seems it a default behavior when only 1 OS is installed. Maintaining Shift pressed maded it show up. An alternative I have yet to try is to uncomment the 2 HIDDEN lines in the grub.cfg. Still, 2 problems remain: There's a serious delay between the moment I turn the machine on and the login screen. Maybe it's because of my 1GB of RAM though. The more serious one is that there's no way (I think) to install grub when I encrypt the disk. I've read about installing it from the live CD, but I'm not sure it's going to be that easy. I'll look for a method and will try.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
I don't know how it's supposed to work. So the image is burned to the CD. Why, during the install, would it accept installing GRUB on my encrypted drive more than if I use a USB stick instead? Normally, a CD is recognized as some kind of drive I think. So I see no reason for it to be different. At least that's my conclusion with the knowledge I have for now.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
I've made progress, but problems don't end: I've done the whole process again, updating grub for good measure. it told me there was something wrong with the config: GRUB_TIMEOUT wasn't null (was at 10), which is not allowed anymore if GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT is defined. So I've put it back to 0. I decrypted my drive: the keyboard at this step was probably the default US one. But now I land in a BusyBox with (intramfs). I'll try this: https://askubuntu.com/questions/137655/boot-drops-to-a-initramfs-prompts-busybox
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
Oh, so you did LUKS over LVM then. I did the opposite. I doubt mine is really safer (preventing access to the LVM partitions in the first place); plus yours allows stretching partitions over several physical disks. My LVM is set in stone instead, so to speak (But I don't need the feature on that machine). Unfortunately, I tried removing the USB stick several times without success, even changing the installation path to /dev/sdb didn't work either. I think I even tried /dev/mapper/herd-of-cats_main. Also there's no CD drive on that machine. Why would a CD be different btw? Because it's not seen as /dev/sdX maybe?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is there a way to post to Reddit without enabling its JavaScript?
Please let us know if it works for you, I'm interested as well. The other annoying part for me is not being able to see the folded comments.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
Thanks lembas, that's a great option. Thanks jxself, now I know how to do it, and why I should (or not). The way I roughly consider my threat model is this: even if there's no threat involved, if it's easy/takes little time to setup, it's better to have it than not. This could be a good option for computers that don't support libreboot and can't have an encrypted /boot (since proprietary BIOSes typically do not have support for reading an encrypted /boot it needs to be left unencrypted.) Looking at this (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB#Boot_partition) and this (http://www.pavelkogan.com/2014/05/23/luks-full-disk-encryption/), it seems I don't need to be on Libreboot in order to have a functioning encrypted /boot anymore. Grub offers this exception now. Even if I'm not on Libreboot on this machine, I still can boot manually. But I can't figure out how to save my manual input. Yet.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Old Fashioned Tiled Wallpaper
Nice one. I wonder if it's hard to do. I suppose it depends on the pattern complexity. I'd try by creating a small pattern, than cropping the image at random. in theory it should work.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
My bad. I'll read what you said again then.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
I suppose it is, since it's in the / partition. So I need a dedicated unencrypted /boot partition in that case? How come?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
Browsing through my 2009 netbook, I see no AMT/ME parameters. Sweet. With the encrypted /boot nearly working, even without Libreboot, it's a rather secure computer. AMT/ME's wiki page seems to say that only 2015 are concerned. But I might be wrong. After all, the X200 is of 2008. I never had the opportunity to check it's original BIOS. Either way, such a black box on my machine is unacceptable. Though I agree that realistically the danger is currently minimal, the fact that it has potential for abuse makes it wrong, to me. There's also such a thing as over-cautiousness, but for now I'm at a deep learning stage, so I go all out ;)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
Oh, right, I meant my BIOS settings. I'm supposed to be able to able/disable AMT. Yet there's no related option. Unfortunately, My netbook has a North bridge chipset is Intel 945GSE, which suIntel® 82573E Gigabit Ethernet Controllerpports AMT: Intel® Active Management Technology,2 when used with the Intel® 82573E Gigabit Ethernet Controller, supports high-quality asset management capabilities such as remote management of unmanned sites -- 2 - Intel® Active Management Technology requires the platform to have an Intel® AMT-enabled chipset, network hardware and software, as well as connection with a power source and a corporate network connection. With regard to notebooks, Intel AMT may not be available or certain capabilities may belimited over a host OS-based VPN or when connecting wirelessly, on battery power, sleeping, hibernating or powered off. For more information, see http://www.intel.com/technology/iamt. Fortunately (I hope), the Device's map indicates that the Gigabit Ethernet Controller is "an optional Intel component". https://www-ssl.intel.com/content/www/us/en/intelligent-systems/navy-pier/atom-n270-ibd.html Can I safely deduce that I'm off the hook with this one, regarding AMT/ME? If I don't have that optional piece on my machine, I can safely say I'm AMT-free. I'll check the Ethernet controller's name in my machine just to be sure, but I know for sure it wasn't replaced or upgraded.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
SOLVED. I'm now happily running an encrypted netinstall (with /boot encrypted) without having to worry about AMT/ME, even if this machine isn't running Libreboot. What I did to finally be able to boot automatically: I removed "quiet splash $vt_handoff" from the grub bot config ("c" when in grub). This worked. I tried again only removing splash this time. It worked also. So after booting, I removed quiet splash altogether (I don't like the black screen "quiet" offers). And did an "update-grub". Worked marvelously.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
I'm actually saving that old netbook from that same graveyard. Sure, there's no Libreboot, and that's ok for what I plan to do with it. And according to the data above, the AMT/ME is no threat on this machine anyway. So there's no point in me getting an X60 right now. But if I need another machine, it's one of the best choices indeed.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
I know I have another command in GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="... cryptdevice=UUID=:lvm root=/dev/mapper/MyStorage-rootvol ..." Hopefully this will be enough. Regarding partitioning, it's very standard: I encrypted the whole thing, then I partitioned it as one / ext4 partition, and a swap one. As long as you don't have a dedicated /boot partition, it shoulldn't be a problem. I never had this error though, this deserves some more investigation.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
Nice, I'm glad it worked :) I wonder what the difference is between having those commands in GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX, and not having the commands but removing /boot from fstab. The weird thing is that I don't have a /boot entr in fstab, only /dev/mapper/main and /dev/mapper/swap.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
No, you don't need a GRUB password. If I'm not mistaken, a GRUB password is meant to prevent unauthorized access to GRUB, nothing more.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
So that means you had no alert during the install that GRUB failed to install? Due to encryption (without it, GRUB get installed properly), I had to finish Trisquel's installation without a bootloader. So after booting, I only had a blank screen, no way to input anything. Maybe GRUB was there hidden (I didn't know about Shift to make it appear at this point), but I doubt it since during the install, the message was "continue without a bootloader". Trisquel really needs improvements in this regard. Or I just need to switch to Debian by myself. But hey, it works for now.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
In my attempt to install grub over a Netinstall 'that fails to install grub, at least when encrypted), I found that there was an expert-mode allowing to manually install everything, just like on arch or Parabola. THIS IS COOL! Best of both worlds (if we put aside the bleeding edge packages I don't personally need). Totally worth trying on a VM.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
following these tutorials (https://stephentanner.com/restoring-grub-for-an-encrypted-lvm.html & https://askubuntu.com/questions/541079/restore-boot-partition-from-running-ubuntu), I though I had successfully installed grub on my encrypted netinstall. but when I boot, I quickly get this prompt: Attempting to decrypt master key... Enter passphrase for hd0,msdos1 (bunchOfNumbersAndLetters): So I go ahead, and I get this: error: access denied. error: no such cryptodisk found. Entering rescue mode... grub rescue>_ Yet, no typo on my part, I even tried my user passphrase (even if it doesn't make sense). I have a hard time finding something on the web right now. If you have a clue about what's going on, I'm interested.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haven't had any software updates for a while
Could you expand just a bit on Debian not backporting security fixes on ESR? I thought that was the point of ESR (which I barely new it existed yesterday, might I add). So Firefox 44 was out in early February (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefox_versions#Version_44). It's been nearly 6 month without any updates, since once a new version comes out, the earlier one isn't supported anymore (can't find again where I've read that yet). But to my understanding, simply upgrading to version 45 (ESR) would have brought security fixes for 10 months or so. Unless there's that backports thing I don't quite get.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
!!!I managed to boot in my 32bits encrypted Netinstall!!! One thing left: despite running sudo update-grub when booted, every time I reboot, I end up in Busybox again. So I have to go once more in grub and type this: set prefix=(lvm/volumeGroupName-logicalVolumeName)/boot/grub set root=(lvm/volumeGroupName-logicalVolumeName) set ls /boot insmod linux linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/mapper/volumeGroupName-logicalVolumeName ro initrd /initrd.img boot How come sudo update grub isn't enough?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haven't had any software updates for a while
In that other thread, it is said that Abrowser's version in Trisquel 7 is outdated. But according to this, it isn't a problem regarding support (https://trisquel.info/fr/forum/icecat-default-browser#comment-3375). > Web Browser 3.5? Why should Trisquel users have to get an outdated version > of their browser for the next six months, when 3.6 has come out already? It will ship with whatever version is the official upstream, to have the same level of support. Stability and security are more important than modernity. So what's the deal? With two people saying the opposite, and me not being knowledgeable enough, what do you all think? And Why?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Ubuntu 16.04 released 2 months ago. Trisquel 8 status?
Ok come on, spit it out... Your a MATE developer, right?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haven't had any software updates for a while
Thanks. Basically, ESR or not, at some point it's time to upgrade, because the security fixes are not backported from the latest version anymore,if I understand. This is definitely not right. I'd rather have the money spent on this instead. The browser is one of the weakest links, so this issue really needs to be first on the list. Specially since it's an OS meant for the average user. In terms of security, I wonder how many programs need to always be up-to-date, besides the browser. Anything accessing the network,I suppose, but this might be overkill.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Compositor Compton on LibreBoot
For me, it kind of works, though I use i3, not Openbox. I only kept the main bar a bit transparent, else I had everything have some transparency, which was unusable. But it works otherwise.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haven't had any software updates for a while
Thanks. Does it happen often? Or, how long has it been left not updated?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haven't had any software updates for a while
I definitely agree. I find strange that the maintainer(s) would do such a mistake continuously. Are you sure there's no missing info on this issue? I remember seeing Abrowser being part of the updates a few "months" ago. Is there a way to see the update history of a program?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haven't had any software updates for a while
Thanks for the .desktop file tip. It's useful for also launching scripts I suppose. And to pre-configure a launch with parameters, like with Firejail (thanks SuperTramp83).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haven't had any software updates for a while
I see -_-" ... *Ahem* so then the latest update I have about abrowser is from November 10 2015. it says version 41.0.2, while abrowser --version in the CLI gives me 44.0.2. Either way, both are dangerously outdated.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haven't had any software updates for a while
Thanks for this. That would mean I'd have to do this every 4 months or so, just to be up-to-date? Because I can't find the ESR (version 45). I only found this, provided I did a proper search: http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/web/firefox OTOH, Debian has it (an is in https): https://packages.debian.org/stable/web/firefox-esr I don't see how compiling from source offers any benefits unless I'd inspect the code, or would want to patch it or something. Anyone feel free to enlighten me on this.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haven't had any software updates for a while
I tried #FSF, they told me I better try the softwares mailing lists. What is that? I'm supposed to simply send a mail? Like for IceCat: bug-gnuzi...@gnu.org For Abrowser I have no idea, it's not in the FSF directory. I can't seem to find info about it yet, besides it being an unbranded Abrowser with the Trisquel addon repo instead. An interesting point is that IceCat is made from a script, which was recently updated by Ruben (http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/gnuzilla.git). What's interesting is that he updated it to 38.8.0ESR. And that was after IceCat being supposedly late compared to Firefox. Why not go to 45 directly (besided having to deal with the tons of changes between versions)? official and default browser needs to come from upstream, though. From https://trisquel.info/fr/forum/icecat-default-browser#comment-3375 Upstream means Trisquel is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr), right? That would mean That Ubuntu still has version 44? I might have some answers in the mailing list, and maybe give some help if I can.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haven't had any software updates for a while
I personally can use a different browser without too much troubles since I'm starting to know my way around the OS. It's about the average users, not me: there's no way this type of users would fix it by themselves. About Tor, well then between April 26 (last v38 update) and And May 30, it's roughly a month between upgrades. I'm seeing now that it's roughly the same amount of time for IceCat (see below). A lack of time makes no sense. If so, Ruben wouldn't be regularly upgrading IceCat's script. Here's the link again: http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/gnuzilla.git And this is the latest commit regarding version upgrade: http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/gnuzilla.git/commit/?id=dfca19be2da9a7043894995d4dafaca201acd329 End of life of this version is actually june 7. Compared to TorBB, for now this makes IceCat AS SAFE AS IT GETS. So IceCat is cleared, even if the problem is the same for Abrowser (anything beyond v44).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haven't had any software updates for a while
mine mentioned the right version too. it's just that Synaptic didn't, for some reason. I'm on IRC as hack2, I made my point about the browsers update, but nobody's there yet.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haven't had any software updates for a while
I can understand, but isn't that a priority over many other things? To me, the browser is one of the more "fragile" programs, the more prone to attacks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haven't had any software updates for a while
Thanks. /var/log I could find, though I only found a search history in Synaptic (which is still a nice discovery).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haven't had any software updates for a while
I don't have answers yet from IRC, but I found this interesting (unfortunate, but interesting): https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox/ https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox-esr/ These completely concern our Abrowser version. That's about 28 exploitable weak spots (orange and red). 10 for the ESR version. Adress bar spoofing? Firejail won't do much against that. And not all users have Javascript disabled. As a reminder: 3 months late for Icecat, 6 months late for Abrowser, being the default browser. Hopefully this won't be taken as ungratitude or bitching on the same level of Trisquel 8 not being ready. I see less and less reasons not to worry about this. And I want to support Trisquel. I want to be able to recommend it without worries.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haven't had any software updates for a while
There are options indeed, but that means that Trisquel isn't enough by default. And since I recommend it around me, that's problematic. Not for my reputation, but for their security.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haven't had any software updates for a while
I find ESR more interesting because I don't have to care about it for at least 10 months. Personally, the less time I spend tweaking or maintaining my OS, the better. I know, I've spent an insane amount of time lately just to have a lightweight but functional OS. But hopefully I'm nearly done fixing stuff. Well that's if I don't get started on grsec...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haven't had any software updates for a while
True, I mean I don't want this issue to be associated with the usual persistent complaints about aesthetics or user-friendliness or the latest packages. This is critical because it's about security updates regarding a vulnerable and exposed program.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haven't had any software updates for a while
That's how I found the search history I talk about above, but there seems to be no update history or version history in Synaptic.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haven't had any software updates for a while
Thanks, then I'll ask him on IRC. For now, I'll probably try one of the suggestions about installing Firefox.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haven't had any software updates for a while
I see, so ESR is clearly the way to go, unless wanting the latest feature (I personally don't care). By the way, Icecat may be ESR, but I just noticed it's unsupported since 3 months ago. The devs seem to be available on IRC, I suppose I'll go ask them about all this.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haven't had any software updates for a while
Oh, so it has nothing to do with Trisquel, but with the specific programs devs? Then logically, these programs shouldn't be relied on as the main browsers. But maybe the alternatives aren't better. Then besides Tor, what would be another alternative, in your opinion? Would a Debian package of Firefox be fine? If so, would I have to check for updates, and download and install the package of the newer version every time, or is there a way to upgrade to the next ESR automatically? Of course, Firejail and Apparmor come to mind (if that's enough). But it sucks for the average user who barely knows about updating the OS, specially if it's the very thing that fails him/her. Oh well, maybe Debian is the simpler solution. I'm not a fan of non-free recommendations though. And Firefox has stuff like Pocket, if I'm not mistaken, which still has a free license. But that's also the more radical and last solution on the list. Midori is up-to-date, but not as secure/privacy-friendly, it seems. Also, no access to some essential plugins.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Doom/Doom II on Trisquel
About functional works, ok, I get the argument overall (though the NC aspect isn't specifically addressed, but I see how it can be impractical to distribute, for say, financing the printing of manuals). about non-functional works, I thought about the post-scarcity mindset (though not as a society but as an individual), and indeed it could work for me. As long as no power (money) is involved, it's a possibility. As for how such a scarcity-free society could happen, (besides for example torrents contributing to that), I vaguely remember that the whole Silicon Valley is working somehow towards that. Probably not with the exact same intentions, but with the idea of making work for a living unnecessary (not necessarily a positive thing, but it's a natural evolution as technology evolves). I'd like to read more about this subject, and I'll try to find that article. I'll also try to check if his argument has evolved. but most likely it didn't, because even with e-books, the situation is overall not that different I suppose. Thanks for the link, Magic Banana.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Professional Photography Tools Free Software
Oh, true, I remember that in Photoshop as well. I've never bothered with it because I never had to, and of course because I didn't know what it was for. Well I knew about (s)RBG and CMYK, but I didn't think of these as color profiles for some reason. So since most screens are innacurate (specially laptops), at least it keeps the numeric color display consistent. Interesting. Then this might be of interest : http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-imaging-color-management.html http://digital-photography-school.com/adding-icc-profiles-in-gimp/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Boot Splash and LightDM do not work!
Hi, maybe try to reinstall plymouth. And this (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Plymouth) might hopefully help.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Free Books
I'm honestly surprised by your reactions. These are ebooks, what more do you need besides downloading them, sharing (linking is fine as far as I know) and this without data mining as a payment (no browser-side js needed)? I already know and enjoy Gutenberg's project and others, and I know it's not the same type of service. Plus it's data that you won't find on the gutemberg webside for instance. Now maybe this is all semantics. I just don't care if I'm not allowed to modify or resell one of their books, or share it in any other way than linking to their website, or to not overload their server(s) with automation. Translation is possibly an issue but hey, sue me. So the freedom that is lacking is either freedom most people won't ever need, or it's freedom I'd take anyway with virtually zero risks. I'll agree to disagree because I personally won't throw the baby with the bathwater in that specific case.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Mounting HDD or DVD in both Thunar and PCmanFM: "Not authorized to perform operation"
While reading this, sice fstab seemed to be used for mounting drives on bootup (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fstab), I see that udev is used for automounting. So I reinstalled it, but still no automounting. But I see other related programs, I wonder if they are installed by default on a normal Trisquel install. Can someone please tell me if you have USB mount and/or udevil installed by default?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Mounting HDD or DVD in both Thunar and PCmanFM: "Not authorized to perform operation"
My mistake, I forgot a comma in the conf file. Now I can hotplug, copy/paste, but for some reason, I still can't unmount. Also the usb0 folder is back again.
[Trisquel-users] Free Books
Among them, two I found promising : http://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-319-02456-1 http://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-1-4302-6356-2 All the books are free on the website. Enjoy.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Freedom by "burning bridges"
I guess you're right. I might have tried on a cheaper device, just out of curiosity. The tablet is too big for me. Unfortunately, anything else would mean non-free software. And Android from source looks like a major PITA to setup. Maybe I'll just use the phone as an agenda as well, and accept some more tracking. Is my location history really that important? After all, even with a tablet, having the wifi on at work and other few locations doesn't change much : being tracked all the way from point A to point B is very similar to knowing I've been at A and B (in this order). The alternative is to be completely off the map. But I can't go this far (because of the job, mainly). I understand that being off the grid matters to some professionals. I think it's just not for me, after all. This seems like an investment where returns aren't worth it (for the average user like me).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Freedom by "burning bridges"
If you, like me, wanted to try to physically cut access to camera, GPS, the modem and the mic, WAIT. I just edited this post: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/if-you-could-go-back-time-and-talk-your-former-owned-self#comment-96446 In a nutshell, Replicant is cooler than I thought. I can even disable access to the modem, and essentially turn my device to a super PDA if I decide to leave telephony to another device. And other cool things about keeping the telephony but being less trackable without removing the battery every time. That's of course ok while following Paul Kocialkowski's warning: "If compromising on privacy/security is not an option, or anything serious is at stake (e.g. political activism or journalism in a sensitive area), it is advised to avoid using a telephony-enabled device at all." To be extra safe, that means to me without even a physical modem on the device. But since I don't care that much, I'm totally using a smartphone with Replicant. With or without the modem enabled, not sure yet. Enabled, I won't have to carry another device with the battery removed. But while the modem isolation seems solid, there's no 100% poof yet (if ever). I'll stop boring you with all that stuff I keep repeating and let you decide for yourself if you're facing a similar choice to make.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Old Fashioned Tiled Wallpaper
Oooh, this is really nice!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Old Fashioned Tiled Wallpaper
Feels like retro gaming, really nice pixel art stuff.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Old Fashioned Tiled Wallpaper
Love these, I probably will still able to read my Conky without any trouble (transparent background on the Conky).
Re: [Trisquel-users] If you could go back in time and talk to your former "owned" self
Many thanks for the Rockbox ideas, I'll have my own alarm-clock ready in no time (I have an old device which is supported) ! For emergency, I mostly agree with you, except that when out, you need to rely on others. Calling the police when witnessing an agression, I wonder how many people do so under pressure (I'm not even talking about direct assistance). Counting on public phones is random at best (how Superman would do his thing these days?). OTOH, Never had to use mine for such an emergency. Reminders on the laptop, why not, but it needs to be on, and if you have to move often, it's not the most practical. But I see it's perfect for your professional lifestyle. Thanks again for the Rockbox ideas, cheers !
