[Bug 331681] Re: Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the device

2013-06-30 Thread ts
This bug does still exist in current versions. digging google I found
the hint to try usb-2.0 ports and indeed in my case my canon 400d
refuses to work on usb-3.0 ports but I can happily connect it through
the usb-2.0 port. may be worth a try..

[Bug 331681] Re: Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the device

2011-04-25 Thread awatt
I am also suffering from this bug, but I was able to import my photos
using Shotwell. Icons for my camera (Kodak Z712 IS) and memory card
would appear on the desktop and be visible in Nautilus. What I couldn't
do was import/move/copy files using any other program than Shotwell.
Since Shotwell only manages photos, I couldn't import my videos.

I tried the hacks above:

sudo killall gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor
sudo chmod a-x gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor

Now I can import photos/videos using gphoto2, but I can't see my
camera/memory card in Nautilus or on my desktop

Has anyone found a better workaround?
Or maybe even more importantly, does anyone know if this problem will persist
with 11.04 (Natty)?

As an aside I don't think this is a Gnome problem. I was using Gnome
under Debian 5 before I switched to Ubuntu 10.10 and I had no problem.
(Aside from this I am really much happier with Ubuntu.)

I can access the camera memory on my Windowx XP running in VirtualBox

can't access it on my host system. (?)

So has the problem been reported to the Gnome developers? I've read
something elsewhere that leads me to suspect that my camera is handled
properly with another Gnome-based distribution (Foresight Linux), which
makes me wonder whether the issue could have an Ubuntu component to it.

I notice that this bug is still marked unassigned. It's been almost 2

2010-12-29 Thread Dave Stevenson
KODAK EasyShare Z981 Digital Camera has the same problem. After many hours of
testing, with bootable live-usb, it appears that this might not be an Ubuntu
problem.
Ubuntu 10.10
Ubuntu 10.04
PCLinuxOS-gnome-2010.12
All fail every time. "Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the
device."

Kubuntu 10.10
PCLinuxOS-kde-2010.12
Both seem to work OK.

It looks as though the problem is more likely to be with Gnome.

Recent upgrade Jaunty-Karmic produced the same problems for me, camera is a

Maverick: New version of Ubuntu, new symptoms; still not solved

I would say that a Nikon D90 is one of the key cameras in its class so
it should definitely work out of the box. I don't care about using the
CLI to get the pictures but closing down my audio player to get
pictures? That is quite insane imho.

I hope below log of actions and symptoms may help some-one to fix the
problem.

With normal rights on gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor:

No Rhythmbox
Turn on camera
Get files with gphoto2: Success!!! (so the ugly hack is not necessary anymore)
Turn off camera
Start Rhythmbox, play music
Turn on camera
Get files with gphoto2: Same error
Turn off camera

After chmod a-x gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor (ugly hack):

Start Rhythmbox, play music; turn on camera (Nikon D90) --> "Unknown device";
app stays responsive (better than Lucid)
Get files with gphoto2: An error occurred in the io-library ('Could not lock
the device'): Camera is already in use.
Close Rhythmbox
Get files with gphoto2: Same error
Turn off camera
Turn on camera
Get files with gphoto2: Success

[Bug 331681] Re: Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the device

2010-09-12 Thread Bart Kroon
I've done another test:

1. kill gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor
2. launch rhythmbox --> gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor gets launched
3. kill gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor
4. play music --> does so
5. turn on camera --> watch how the rhythmbox GUI turns gray (unresponsive) and
track position stalls (music goes on)
6. turn off camera --> the GUI comes back to color and the track position jumps

The results are puzzling to me:
  - even after killing gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor rhythmbox seems to respond
to the camera
  - I could repeat steps 4 and 5 a couple of times within one track

Rhythmbox is still running (as I click post).

[Bug 331681] Re: Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the device

2010-04-29 Thread Steven Sciame
I experienced this problem in Karmic. Now I am using Lucid Lynx and
seem to be experiencing something similar. I get the same error
messages: Unable to mount KODAK EasyShare CX7430 Zoom Digital Camera
Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the device And this:
Error Conecting to Camera Received error "Could not lock the device"
while connecting to camera

The difference is that I am now able to download the photos from my
camera! This is great to see, but I would love to get these error
messages cleaned up for when I show Lucid off to my judgemental
"Proprietary Operating System" owning friends. :-) I know that this
is relatively low priority, but any help would be much appreciated.

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that
would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine
the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds .
Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-

I am having this same issue with a Kodak C180 on Ubuntu 9.10. I get the
"Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the device" message when
connecting the camera. I get unable to connect to device type of errors
from both F-spot as well as Digikam.

I tried the reported workaround of killing the gvfs-gphoto2-volume-
monitor process, but now I do not get the camera able to mount at all.

Am looking for a viable patch, a fallback option, or true working
workaround option as this all worked fine for me under Ubuntu 9.04

[Bug 331681] Re: Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the device

2009-11-09 Thread Petr
I found this an it works fine for me:

Quick fix - run script in terminal "sudo killall gvfs-gphoto2-volume-
monitor" then connect the camera.

Long-term fix (Prevent the process from starting) - run script in
terminal "sudo chmod -x /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor"

Then go to System -> Preferences -> Removable drives and media ->
Cameras and remove the "f-spot-import" with "gthumb --import-photos" or
etc...

Couple of attachments of what happens having 'sudo killall gvfs-gphoto2

copy, the second what happens when I give up!

BTW is anyone actively addressing this bug or can someone recommend a
replacement for f-spot that still works in Karmic before I go out and
but Windows 7 (excuse my language!)

[Bug 331681] Re: Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the device

2009-10-31 Thread Rich Wales
I have some more info about this bug. Apparently, it is not simply a
device *permissions* problem (as I had previously supposed). Rather,
there seems to be a device *locking* problem involving the gphoto2
volume monitor -- i.e., gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor is grabbing the
camera device and preventing any other application from getting
exclusive access. This was happening even after I temporarily added my
user account to the "root" group, and after I added stuff to
/etc/udev/rules.d to recognize my camera and put its USB device file in
the "plugdev" group.

See http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=7205...@postcount=4 for more
on this.

I killed off the running gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor process, and I also
changed the permissions on that application's binary to make it non-
executable. After doing this, I was able to mount my camera and access
it from Picasa2.

Another workaround might possibly be to uninstall the gphoto2 package; I
haven't tried this yet.

2009-10-11 Thread Rich Wales
See my earlier comment #19 above. The problem appears to be a device
permissions problem; the solution is probably to update the "udev"
rules. Temporarily putting the user account in the "root" group (see my
comment #18) should confirm whether it really is a device permissions
problem or not.

[Bug 331681] Re: Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the device

2009-10-11 Thread ricardisimo
I don't think downgrading to Hardy is the solution, to be honest. If the
maintainers of the repositories would be so kind as to keep "legacy"
version of libgphoto (and ALL Ubuntu software, while they're at it)
available for people to force the version they need, that would be the
solution. Where are the older versions? If someone would be so kind as
to point us to them, I'm sure we could confirm or deny very rapidly what
the problem is.

Mind you, there might very well be dependency problems if we force
install a two-year-old version of libgphoto, so maybe the devs can give
us a tip or two with that as well. Thanks.

[Bug 331681] Re: Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the device

2009-09-17 Thread Richard Gauvin
Hi,

See this work around:

http://www.korben.info/impossible-de-monter-un-appareil-photo-sur-
ubuntu-810-intrepid-ibex-la-solution.html

In short =

Apply to U9.04 and Kodak DX7590 = OK

sudo gedit /usr/share/hal/fdi/preprobe/10osvendor/20-libgphoto2.fdi
Search for "Kodak DX7590" (or your camera model)
Put in XML comment of this paragraph =

Reconnect your Kodak DX7590
Now, the camera is seen like an external stockage device by Ubuntu 9.04

I hope it will help to solve this bug, putting you on a track !
Good lock.

I should mention one little detail: even with "Camera" I get all the

no arguing with results, and "Camera" is in fact extracting my photos

Nobodie: it sounds like you may not have tried Camera. I can once again

2009-08-22 Thread nobodie
u, yes i have the problem with a Kodak camera but obviously it is
lib related and has nothing to do with a specific application since it
errors before any application is triggered. Yes that seems to mean an
ownership problem and the kludgey stufff is kludgey so we need a good
solution. Yes Rich is probably right about the UDEV rules being a
possible solution, but unless Rich is a dev type (and I am not saying
you aren't or that I could judge you if you were,) it would be nice to
have somebody with some dev creds to fix this. It goes back to my
birthday (second post anyway) which was more than half a year ago now.
Can this get bumped into somebody's inbox for a permanent solution?

[Bug 331681] Re: Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the device

2009-07-24 Thread Rich Wales
The fact that changing group membership of a user account (see my
comment #18 above) sidesteps the problem suggests to me that the
preferred solution would be to add the right "udev" rules (in
/lib/udev/rules.d or /etc/udev/rules.d) to create the camera's USB
device with the correct group membership ("plugdev" group?).

My mother's camera is identified (via the "lsusb" command) as "Kodak Co.
Digital Camera", ID 040a:05b8. Is there a comprehensive list of USB
camera ID's, and/or a good set of pattern matches for the names of
common USB cameras, which could be added to the "udev" rules?

Or, alternatively -- since camera support used to work properly in
Ubuntu, but apparently broke fairly recently -- did such info exist in
the "udev" rules at some time in the past, and was it either
intentionally removed (and why?), or did some other change inadvertently
take it all away?

2009-07-19 Thread Rich Wales
I managed to work around this bug by adding user accounts to the "root"
group in /etc/group.

Yes, I do know this is a nasty, odiferous kludge, with so many horrible
security implications that I can't even count them, but my elderly mom
(who really doesn't understand the difference between Windows and Linux
and only knows that she hasn't been able to use her camera on her
computer) would probably have gone out and bought a new camera AND a new
computer some day if I hadn't found some sort of fix (or messy pseudo-
fix) for this problem NOW.

Presumably, the right way to fix the problem would be to change the
permissions on the usbdev* special file created in /dev when a camera is
connected.

ricardisimo's comment, i was willing to give it a try by installing
"camera.app" package from the synaptic. And the result was very good.
Now, my Jaunty machine is able to detect nikon coolpix S51 . thanks a
lot ricardisimo for your suggestion. I hope this problem can be fixed in
the next Karmic Release.

I have a Kodak C533 and I am also no longer able to connect my camera
(worked great up until Jaunty). I get the "Error initializing camera:

Ooops, this is not a bug on my Motozine ZN5. There are USB settings
that allow the phone to be mounted as either a camera, memory card, etc.
Changing the USB setting to "memory card" fixed it.

Yes, you are correct, this probably won't even survive the unplug/replug
of the device since that should destroy and recreate the devices...I
wasn't sure where to start on a more permanent solution, your idea
sounds good. I'll try it out soon.

2009-05-29 Thread Rich Wales
I assume the above is an extremely temporary workaround which won't
survive a reboot. Is the right solution going to involve adding
something to /lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules or some other
/lib/udev/rules.d/* file?

2009-05-28 Thread Chris Guirl
I was having this problem with my Canon SX10 IS, and I fixed it thus.
The USB bus/device IDs (found through lsusb) led me to /dev/usbdev2.25*.
I checked the permissions on these files and they were root:root 660
which means my user can't access them. My user is already in the plugdev
group so I did "sudo chgrp plugdev /dev/usbdev2.25*", and then gThumb
was able to import my photos again.

[Bug 331681] Re: Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the device

2009-05-12 Thread Russ
Same problems as the others with a Kodak C533 plugged into USB, right
down to the screen shots and dmesg already mentioned. Additionally, the
internal flash memory card reader would not work properly. The drives in
the reader do not show up in Computer. I could temporarily get them to
appear by plugging and unplugging the internal USB header, or switch to
another header, and the card reader would work properly once the drives
appeared, but the next time I rebooted, the drives would disappear and
not show up on their own. I believe the 'camera not locked' and the
disappearing usb card reader drives are related to some USB issues that
are not yet resolved in 9.04. Everything worked OK in 8.10. Right now in
9.04 I can't get pictures from the camera at all since connecting the
camera via USB cable or using a memory card reader via internal USB
header simply will not work.

2009-05-05 Thread CJLinSF
I'm having a similar problem with a Motorola Motozine ZN5. It used to
mount the two memory cards and I could copy mp3 files etc back and
forth. Now only one drive mounts and I get the -60 error mentioned
above.

dmesg shows:

[ 126.068017] usb 1-6: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 3
[ 126.203278] usb 1-6: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

Note: no /dev/sdc is shown

This all worked before.

[Bug 331681] Re: Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the device

2009-05-04 Thread ricardisimo
Well, at the very least I have found an application that does work, and
pretty flawlessly: "Camera". It is "Camera" under "Add/Remove..." but
camera.app in Synaptic. I also installed gphoto in Synaptic, because it
was recommended within libgphoto, but I don't believe that had anything
to do with this little milestone. Camera is definitely barebones, as far
as GUIs go, but there's no arguing with results.

This application also depends on libgphoto, so there goes my theory,
probably. Good luck everyone.

[Bug 331681] Re: Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the device

2009-05-04 Thread ricardisimo
I have a Kodak EasyShare C310 showing the same error multiple times,
than finally mounting. However, I cannot seem to download any of my
pictures to my hard drive. I had a similar problem with this same camera
under both Feisty and Gutsy, evidently due to some problem with newer
versions of libgphoto: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=102724

Similar to what James mentions, the camera worked brilliantly under both
Hardy and Intrepid. This looks and feels very much like my old problem,
and I would be amazed if libgphoto weren't once again the culprit. Is
there a way once again to downgrade the version we are using?

I have some screenshots of the errors I'm getting. Please let me know if
you need them. As with my pre-Hardy problems, I can view onscreen photos
which have already been uploaded, but none of the newer ones.

I'm seeing the same problem (the "Error initializing camera: -60: Could

Under Intrepid Ibex, it worked like a charm.
