[Bug 872093] Re: SD Card not being recognized

2013-08-18 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Thiago Motta, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder,
but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel,
please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is
fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc5

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 872093] Re: SD Card not being recognized

2012-01-15 Thread smiley1962
found this workaround in fedora forums, works half by half, e.g. works
when sdcard not inserted on boot.

You must add those lines to one of the *.conf files in the
etc/modprobe.d folder, I believe it would be dist.conf.

Do this by typing the following into konsole. (substitute gedit with text
editor of choice)
Code:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/dist.conf

Then just add those lines:
Code:

alias mmc_core tifm_core
alias mmc_card tifm_sd

And save the file.

*If this is the wrong .conf file, someone please correct me.

Hope that helps.

[Bug 872093] Re: SD Card not being recognized

2012-01-04 Thread John Belton
This situation doesn't seem to have changed, even though there has been another
release of the Kernel, now 3.0.0-15.25, I'm not sure exactly what this change
was supposed to cover but built in SD Card readers don't seem to be consided
as standard. Does this also apply to built in web-cams and microphones and
the like? If it is the case I can see a lot of people moving to OSX or even
Windows.

I'm having the same problem with my SD card reader. It actually doesn't
allow my system to shutdown or restart when I have it inserted into my
laptop. When I hard boot it, it freezes at the Gateway logo screen with
the SD card inserted. It doesn't move from that screen.

2011-12-18 Thread John Belton
In my frustration I purchased a USB Card Reader and that permits me to read the
SD cards (and others) via a USB port, so the problem must be not seeing or
identifying the hardware but I'm not sure how to confirm this. I have tried
looking at some settings in the terminal but am not sure where to look let
alone what to change. This might help those who do know where to look.

[Bug 872093] Re: SD Card not being recognized

2011-11-27 Thread John Belton
I have tried looking at the kernel.org site but though it seems to be active
(the last date quoted seems to be 25 Nov 2011) but I can't see any search
facility and the numbers may be latest releases not that used by Ubuntu. Any
help would be nice, copying photo files from the SD card in Windows to then
have to use a USB stick to get them into Ubuntu for my uses is annoying (not
least being my desire to remove Windows Vista completely from the laptop).

[Bug 872093] Re: SD Card not being recognized

2011-11-17 Thread Joseph Salisbury
This issue appears to be an upstream bug, since you tested the latest
upstream kernel. Would it be possible for you to open an upstream bug
report at bugzilla.kernel.org [1]? That will allow the upstream
Developers to examine the issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to
the bug.

If you are comfortable with opening a bug upstream, It would be great if
you can report back the upstream bug number in this bug report. That
will allow us to link this bug to the upstream report.

The bugzilla.kernel.org site may still be unavailable due to the recent
break-in. If that is the case, please add the tag: kernel-needs-
upstream-bug-report

[Bug 872093] Re: SD Card not being recognized

2011-11-17 Thread John Belton
I'm not sure what to do but was under the impression it had been reported as a
Kernel bug, perhaps I misread a comment suggesting it should be reported?
I do feel it is something that needs investigation as it may be related to some
other things that don't seem to be seen now, (my laptop has a firewire port
which used to be listed as not used as I haven't got anything that used it
but it isn't in the current list of devices/drivers).
I will report it if you can tell me what is needed and who I should contact.

[Bug 872093] Re: SD Card not being recognized

2011-11-17 Thread Thiago Motta
seens that kernel.org bugzilla is still down.

Inded the bug was reported in the Kernel, and Joseph is right the
problem is in the mainline kernel and not specific on ubuntu build, this
bug is not even exclusive to Ubuntu, i had this same problem with Fedora
starting from 15 (as they use kernel 3.0 renamed as 2.6.40) and the
recently released version 16 that use kernel 3.1 and also with OpenSUSE
12.1 that use Kernel 3.1 as well.

Will report the bug to kernel.org as soon as possible. Any
recomendations on how to proced while kernel.org bugzilla is not
avaliable?

[Bug 872093] Re: SD Card not being recognized

2011-11-09 Thread John Belton
I have used the fact that the SD card I have works in Windows to re-format it
(as the default DOS 32 format) and reloaded some files onto it to ensure the
card wasn't corrupted. It works OK in Windows Vista but still isn't recognized
(or even detected) in Ubuntu 11.10. I can only conclude the upgrade of the
kernel to 3.0.0.12 misses these devices.

I have tried the restart with and without the SD card plugged in, it still
doesn't see it in either case.
this version of Ubuntu is getting worse, the Launcher doesn't indicate open
files or programs unless they are new and the screen switching locks up
preventing a full-screen browser or other program from being closed. I am
seriously thinking of going back to Ubuntu 11.04 until it is sorted out.

[Bug 872093] Re: SD Card not being recognized

2011-10-28 Thread John Belton
I trued that early on but it still doesn't see the SD card so can't just use
it, it doesn't show as mounted or otherwise when looking with the command line
(the card has a disk name added in this case and is identified as such in
Windows Vista on the same machine).
I don't know what machine you are using is or if it is an external USB plug-in
adapter that may work by fooling the system into seeing it as a USB card. I
don't have an adapter to try so I don't know if that works.
I'm not sure it's the same bug as the card worked fine in 11.04, I used it for
transferring files when studying with the OU on a course that has Windows only
software without problems.

[Bug 872093] Re: SD Card not being recognized

2011-10-27 Thread parq
Same problem with an card reader in a pc. It worked all fine before
upgrade, and stopped working after upgrade.

The reader has an usb output that works fine, so it only affect to SD
card reader. It has other card slots such MS and CF, but I don't have
any card to test it in order to know if only affects to SD or not.

[Bug 872093] Re: SD Card not being recognized

2011-10-27 Thread John Belton
My USB ports work OK but I don't know about the other ports (there is a
Firewire port and another connection (for a docking station I think)
but I don't have devices to test these. I understand others have also
noted the SD card failure.

[Bug 872093] Re: SD Card not being recognized

2011-10-24 Thread John Belton
Looking at the data presented above it seems to have been from a system running
the 64 bit version, for the record I have the same problem with the 32 bit
Ubuntu 11.10 on a Dell Vostro 1510. I don't think it should matter as the data
in/out to an SD card is serial but I thought it may be worth mentioning.

@Thiago,

It's probably not necessary to run apport-collect again, since the bug
report already has this data.

[Bug 872093] Re: SD Card not being recognized

2011-10-11 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It
will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This
can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag
located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-
upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 872093] Re: SD Card not being recognized

2011-10-11 Thread Thiago Motta
Hi, i tested with kernels 3.0.4, 3.0.6 and 3.1rc9 and all of then has
this same problem. I had to reinstall the system from my previous posted
info because some custom changes i made where causing the system to
crash at boot and i didnt had time to troubleshoot, it was quicker for
me to reinstal.

Again, i ran full-upgrade before installing mainline kernel and making
the tests, but i should mention that the system was overall very
unstable with this kernel...

I belive this is very likelly to be on the mainline kernel because i
have the same error in Fedora 16 and OpenSUSE 12.1 that use the same
kernel, the previous versions of them also work fine.

apport-collect is running and should post the data soon (as i said the
mainline kernel is very unstable and slowed a lot my system).

Please, let me know if there is any aditional info i can provide.
