I had been wanting to say: If you are that enthusiast about it, by all
means go ahead by now ;-). It might come to an interesting conversation
and it is a courageous thing to do nonetheless. After all, this person
is apparently a Gnome Ubuntu user and you'd get your side of the story ;-).

Well..

Bye.

The artwork team is working on everything now - installer, logo, website,
wallpapers, I even want a Firefox theme if you will (as soon as I figure out
how to do it) for a complete personalized desktop experience. It's a small
extra, but it would be nice.

We know people want to see results, but real life comes first. Some of us had
their exams and some have work way over their head.

We're currently discussing the final stages of some projects. Yesterday I
started modifying our pictograms and soon I'll have a look at ubiquity.

As far as the logo is concerned, borrowing GNOME's was a mistake from day 1.
It's highly confusing, and due to its complexity difficult to work with, plus
using someone else's logo as our own isn't quite all right, even though certain
permissions have been given it will never be clear unless it's completely
changed, which it will, soon.

Rule of thumb: Changing somebody else's trademark is a no go and is often a
violation (many entities have an explicit statement, that altering their
identity is strictly prohibited). An identity is a unique representation of a
product/company. Using somebody else's should only be done in full context with
no modifications and w/ permission.

Personally, I don't (entirely) agree with what Xubuntu and Ubuntu MATE did
(technically they violate some rules, because they have modified somebody
else's logo and used it to represent themselves), but if those whose identities
were forked don't object, neither can anyone else.

As far as the the Craiglist issue goes, we should drop it. Unless it's someone
earning a fortune and literally claiming the product as their own it's not an
issue.

Nothing ruins creativity like too many voices weighing in. We call it the Ice
Cream Principle. Tell 10 people to go get ice cream with one condition: they
all have to agree on one flavour. That flavour is going to be chocolate or
vanilla every time. Groups of people don't agree on what's cool or interesting,
they agree on what's easy to agree on.

The full logo has approval from both Canonical and the GNOME foundation and is
fully legit.
The problem is that the GNOME foundation wont allow us to use the roundel by
itself, i.e like what you see on the plymouth boot splash screen,
since it looses the context of 'Ubuntu'. This is a particular problem on social
media sites and what not.

Agreed! And what an awesome distro it is. I remember reading an Interview with
stormy peters about how new gnome3 was going to be, unlike anything else! It
is! Thank you for your hard work in making this available! I really did not
want to use fedora or having the crazy hybrid of unity/gnome3 I had for some
time.

But while on the subject of legalities and such, is gnome going to be one of
the official trademarks ? Is that what the new Logo going to be for?

If this person is actually charging users $30.00 to install Ubuntu

We don't know what the person's limitations might be maybe
English is not his/her native language. Why stir the pot? Is he actually
doing anyone any harm? Has anyone actually complained that they've been
negatively impacted (aka; ripped off)?

I truly suggest we just drop this to avoid sounding like a bunch of kids
fighting over who gets to use the sand box.

However if this person is simply downloading the ISO and burning it to
a DVD/Flash Drive then I will try my best to educate him about the
ethical issues of selling "free software". I would ask that he
discontinue this and if it does continue then we will need to decide
our next steps.

Even then I see no real problem. I've created a vast number of live
DVD's at no cost to the recipient, but I do accept donations to cover my
out-of-pocket costs. Live USB's w/persistence are a different story. The
cost of USB sticks varies greatly but $30 is about what I charge for a
32GB live USB, again just to recover my out-of-pocket costs and a bit
for my time.

I will try to reach out to this person after my morning meetings and
report back to the community with what happens.

Seems a lot of people are getting riled up for nothing here. Keep calm, and
keep reporting bugs to further polish Ubuntu GNOME? ;) Geez...

Just to recap, citing Tim that left this:

You can also sell GPL software and anything under MIT/BSD, etc. This isn't
something new, maybe to the new users. There are better things to worry about
than keeping a look out on people that sells GNU/Linux distributions on
DVD/CD/any type of media, imho.

There is no ethical issues with selling free software. Lots of companies
distribute free software in CD or DVD. I think we're unnecessarily wasting
time on this.

Re: Someone Tries to Sell Ubuntu GNOME Linux OS on Craigslist for $30

2015-06-22 Thread Xen
I don't think "doing it solely for your own good" contradicts doing
something that might be of benefit to some others, as if you have to
take the interests of those others into account before you start doing
something.

The highest good anyone can does for himself or herself is also the
highest good for everyone else. You don't have to take into
consideration all of the interests for all of the other parties before
you start doing your thing. That aside, probably doing someone a
service, thinking that the product might be of use to someone, is good
enough in itself.

But I don't think the person is trying to sell a copy of Ubuntu Gnome,
as the other author mentioned. I think the person is trying to sell a
complete system that has Ubuntu Gnome installed on it, and actually the
wording is so bad that you can't distinguish between the two.

I think the best service you can do to this person is to help him
clarify what he wants to sell, but that aside, it's not like there's a
monumental problem here; the guy wrote a bad ad.

There are people selling copies of Ubuntu Linux (and other derivatives
or distributions) and I know there is one in the Netherlands and he is
actually doing a service to people who cannot download or burn
themselves. There are also people I believe on Amazon or Similar in the
USA doing the same thing. You buy a small package for a small price,
usually around $8 or $10, and you get a DVD sent to you.

You can end up in situations in life where the simple means of burning a
disc yourself can be unavailable to you.

Then having a DVD sent to you is a real help.

I think you guys fail to see the point that this person might solely
be doing it for their own good.

Just look at the grammar. Do you honestly think they might actually be
doing the community a service by "spreading the word" this way?
Without a proper product presentation the one offering this doesn't
sound like an honest entity.

If I were to profit from offering any kind of services involving UG I
would definitely make it look professional, not posting one sentence
as written by Tarzan.

Hi everyone,

The article:

Here is the ad:
http://fayetteville.craigslist.org/sys/5040249435.html

When you click on "Reply" and tell the website that you're not a
bot/machine, you'll get the number of the person who published
that ad 29 days ago!

Could someone who lives in USA to contact that person and
understand what is going on?!

As a person who respects privacy, I am not going to publish
his/her number here on a public mailing list.

I'll be waiting for someone's reply to this :)

Thank you!

@Keith
Can you give him/her a call, please?

Re: Someone Tries to Sell Ubuntu GNOME Linux OS on Craigslist for $30

2015-06-22 Thread Keith I Myers
Hello All,
I will be reaching out to this person this afternoon to try to get his side
of the story. We will all agree that the posting on CraigsList is extremely
vague and leaves A LOT of room for speculation and the article on Softpedia
covering the story was written in a way that it could incite anger, lets
not fall for it until we get both sides of the story. A journalist should
NEVER publish a one sided story without at least making an attempt to reach
out to the other party involved. Lets not question this persons
intelligence or resort to insults.

If this person is actually charging users $30.00 to install Ubuntu Gnome on
their machine and make sure everything works, then this person is doing
nothing wrong and in many ways should be an inspiration to the community as
this person is helping to spread Ubuntu Gnome to his local area. I
personally would love to see such grass-root businesses spring up all over
the place to not only do the install but also provide support. If this is
the case, I will ask this person to re-write the CraigsList posting to be
much more clear and in a way that it respects the Ubuntu and Gnome
trademarks.

However if this person is simply downloading the ISO and burning it to a
DVD/Flash Drive then I will try my best to educate him about the ethical
issues of selling "free software". I would ask that he discontinue this and
if it does continue then we will need to decide our next steps.

I will try to reach out to this person after my morning meetings and report
back to the community with what happens.

Re: Someone Tries to Sell Ubuntu GNOME Linux OS on Craigslist for $30

2015-06-22 Thread Tim
Why is everyone getting so worked up about this? Clearly softpedia is just
click-baiting, otherwise it wouldnt even be news. The monkey that
wrote the ad clearly doesn't have the intelligence to make any money. Surely
any sane person (consumer) would take one look at that ad and ask
wtf. I hardly see him making a rush of sales. At the best someone might wonder
what is Ubuntu GNOME and google it to find out.

Anyway regardless, it is afaik perfectly legal to sell DVD/USB's with Ubuntu
(and the flavours) so long as they are the official unmodified
images (there are or atleast were, heaps of sites doing this, seems osdisc
might be the only one left). Its also perfectly legal for someone to
sell support services so long as they don't make claims that they are
officially connected with the trademark owners. Its also ok to sell
systems with Ubuntu GNOME pre-installed, however if its on a commercial scale,
Canonical would probably want you to sign a OEM agreement.

Seriously just forget about this one! There are plenty more productive things
to be done than worry about some stupid ad on craigslist!

Tim

Actually it can be sold, provided that you respect the GPL licence. For
example, it would be perfectly legal to put Ubuntu CDs or DVDs in nice
boxes with paper docs and sell them in stores or Amazon.

I've made hunderds of Ubuntu/Lubuntu/UbuntuGnome installations
professionally, but I've never sold the software itself.

The problem I see in the ad is the phrase, because it seems Ubuntu can
be sold itself.

For nearly a year, I've been converting people to GNU/Linux left and right
and I did that 'not' for free, but for money. However, before I do
anything, I have informed the user/client that I'm charging for the
service, NOT the software itself. Usually, my services were involving much
more of just installation. I had to do other things beside installation.

All that led me to think about it deeply .. why not expand that and make my
living instead of spending my entire life updating my CV and beg for a job?

So, Kibo was born:
http://kibo.computer/

And, I just got my first client the other day. I managed to convert the
lady from Windows 7 that couldn't even boot in to Xubuntu 14.04 LTS and all
that happened ONLINE .. I did not touch anything .. I was giving
instructions and she (the user) was doing it herself.

My charges where for my time + efforts, NOT the software itself.

The reason I asked someone (thanks To Keith) to contact that person, is to
find out what is going on? if you go back to my original email, I didn't
say anything :) I am not even upset, but so curious to understand what is
going on :) so, let's hold our horses and wait for Keith ;)

 Hi everyone,

I found this tweet on Twitter:
 https://twitter.com/Softpedia/status/612791924282540033

 The article:

 http://linux.softpedia.com/blog/Someone-Tries-to-Sell-Ubuntu-GNOME-Linux-OS-on-Craigslist-for-30-484867.shtml?utm_content=bufferb8c51&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

 Here is the ad:
 http://fayetteville.craigslist.org/sys/5040249435.html

When you click on "Reply" and tell the website that you're not a
bot/machine, you'll get the number of the person who published that ad 29
 days ago!

Could someone who lives in USA to contact that person and understand
 what is going on?!

As a person who respects privacy, I am not going to publish his/her
number here on a public mailing list.

I'll be waiting for someone's reply to this :)

 Thank you!

 @Keith
Can you give him/her a call, please?

Reading the ad for me a "system" is a full computer. For $30 it is
really cheap.

Also this person could be giving a 1hr introduction to ubuntuGnome at
the time of sell, that could be a great service that has no reason to be
free.

This person could actually be doing a public service? What if your

It is more likely that someone is trying to make a quick buck. Hopefully
not someone distributing a dodgy copy with malware. Then again, when was

Some years ago someone was selling CDs of ubuntu in amazon or ebay.
Since canonical stopped providing CDs they were actually providing a
