VMWare, QEMU, Virtualbox and Parallels (and many others) are software products which can be installed on various platforms including Windows, Linux and Mac OSX. Their purpose is to emulate/simulate/virtualise computer hardware so that you can run a computer within a computer. So for example if you were a Mac user who needed to run some Windows applications you might use Parallels to run a full Windows environment inside OSX. If you were a Windows user who wanted to try out Linux you might install VMWare on Windows and install Linux inside VM. The benefit of this is that you can run both operating systems at the same time rather than switch between them with a reboot - so called dual-booting. The reason I mentioned VirtualBox and QEMU in response to the mail about VMWare is because VMWare is a proprietary (closed source) application, whereas (some versions of) VirtualBox and (all versions of) QEMU are free/open source products. They all achieve much the same goal, but each has advantages and disadvantages. Hi I have asked several people this question, but do not get any replies, I have just installed ubuntu onto my pc at home, but as I am not on line i have to use a library pc for any downloading at present, (i on the sick and cannot afford it at present). i want to install a different media player, but just can't seem to do it, 1st, do i have to be online to load programes? 2nd, how do i adjust the write speed on the cd burner? as it just has a 1 showing. and cannot be changed, I have to admit that i am getting a bit frustrated at the moment, and seriously considering going back to windows, But i don't realy like the idea of helping Mr Gates getting richer, Please help me, Liam Jackson [EMAIL PROTECTED] PS as you may have gathered, i am a complete novice, ___ All New Yahoo! By load do you mean to run the program or do you mean to install the program? Either way you shouldn't need to be online. You can download packages from http://packages.ubuntu.com and install them by clicking on them and they should open in Gdebi You sometimes have to be careful to get all the dependencies. This is indeed a problem, but not a totally impossible one to work around. There are a couple of tutorials online which are designed for debian based systems such as ubuntu. http://beans.seartipy.com/2006/05/06/update-or-install-applications-on-debianubuntu-without-an-internet-connection/ http://beans.seartipy.com/2006/11/03/simple-way-to-update-ubuntu-edgy-with-slowno-internet-connection/ You could use this method to generate a script which you put on a usb key or print out and take to the library. There is a slight flaw with those options. They assume you are using linux on the internet connected computer (in your case the library). This is unlikely to be the case, and as such you would need to look at the file generated (on your usb key) and manually grab the individual files onto the key. Messy but your options are limited. You would pay a company a deposit for the disk and then subscription, and for that money you get sent a USB disk containing the entire Ubuntu repository for the release you are on (or the next one up you want to upgrade to). At any time you could send it back and get it updated and returned (24/48 hour turnaround would be appropriate). This would work well also for people on dialup or people in outlying areas. It would also be good for people with many machines which need updating - such as a school - but limited bandwidth. For the technically minded this could be easily implemented with the use of apt-mirror to mirror the repo(s), and rsync to update the USB hard disks. The entire repo for one release is about 30GiB at the moment, which easily fits on a cheap small USB hard disk (retail currently around 35GBP. Using laptop sized ones there is no need for a power supply (although if a machine has issues with power the user can supply one themselves), and the postage would be relatively cheap. The main issues I see with this are:- 1) Licensing - would it be 100% legal to redistribute the entire (main, restricted, multiverse, universe) repository? 2) Cost - it would need to be less than the cost of capped broadband - although for those people with no opportunity to get broadband this might not be a problem :) 3) Drive failure - disks being sent back and forth in the post might lead to a shorter lifespan? 4) Trust: Would a customer trust that the disk really does contain the repo and not some nasty spyware etc. Maybe a system with different levels. Bronze: You get one repo on the disk and can send the disk back once a month. Silver: You get two repos (e.g. Feisty and Gutsy) and can send the disk back twice a month. Gold: You get three repos (e.g. Dapper, Feisty and Gutsy) and can send the disk back four times a month. If the signing system in apt is used surely it doesn't matter how the files got to you it would be extremely difficult to maliciously alter them and still get a valid signature for them. Of course I could be wrong, I don't know as much about apt as I should. They are if you get them from a deb http source, but I am not sure it would if you (the user) uses deb file to load directly from the USB disk. Of course they could put the USB disk on their intranet - then apt would moan about the site because it's not where the files came from iirc. Is it not possible to automatically parse the generate file to work out which files to fetch and them fetch them automatically? Would be good to have an app that can do that. Probably best to do it in Java as that has the best deployment so is most likely to be on a public computer. Somebody must have thought of and done this before? Remember the KISS principle and that this USB key is being put into someone elses computer - in this case the library. You cannot assume that you can run applications from or install applications from the USB key. Maybe the wget script could be translated into an html page which the user just clicks the files to get them. One of the things that I do like about MS is the fact that just about any PC auto-runs removable media by default. Granted this slows you down a bit if the USB drives are disabled, however a small piece of VBScript set to autorun on insertion of the pendrive that downloaded the debs to the USBStick then a bash script that installs them to the Linux PC would probably work. My library certainly doesn't have it, does your local library? Are you deliberately reading only the first line of all my mails? :) Saying it's human readble does not imply that I am assuming that wget is on the machines. Merely that if a file consists of a list of wgets then it is possible to pluck out the URLs. I never said that wget would be on the machine. One question though, if your machine has never been connected to the internet how is it going to have a list of packages from Multiverse/Universe? Feisty has multiverse and universe enabled by default, but yes, it would not have the list of packages, and certainly would not be up to date. Again, if you read the links I pasted you would see a section about this under additional notes. This could be done over dialup. John What qualifies for 'geriatric' these days (worried :-) ) re: Virtual Machines If you've got a *full* version of XP on CD (doesn't work with 'upgrades') you can install, say VMWare, on Linux, then 'install' XP into that so for most purposes you will have XP under Linux. Hi, I need to regularly convert a few hundred/thousand .jpgs to a mpeg4 (or other) video. These files are selected as the result of a mysql query from perl and sit within a number of directories along with many more images which will not form part of the video - hence I cannot use wildcards with ffmpeg (or any other tool). I can easily list all the filenames in order to a file but am unable to find a way to use this file (which currently has the full path to one jpg on each line) as input to ffmpeg. Currently the only way I have found to do this is to copy all the files (or create links) to a new directory which then allows me to use wildcards - however this seems horribly inefficient! OK - apologies if I was somewhat vague in my requirements! 1) There is a directory structure with very many (several thousand) directories containing a large amount of .jpg files. 2) I have a perl script that runs periodically and using criteria stored in a mysql database identifies a subset of these files (based on a number of criteria stored within the db). 3) The files identified in 2) will be spread across a number of directories with not all files in any single directory necessarily included. 4) I wish to convert these images into a video running at (say) 10 fps using reasonably high compression which can later be viewed from Linux Windows clients. 5) The number of images identified in each run (probably daily) will range from a few dozen to a few thousand with each image in the range 20-80k. If you just want Make/Model then i'd recommend running from the console/terminal: $ lspci | grep VGA That will list the PCI devices attached and 'grep' VGA - which will remove all lines that do not contain the line 'VGA'. Yep sounds great and a real good un too! My only worry on this would be the cost of maintaining the stocks of those USB drives. Presumeably this would be just a web based and not a telephone based service Alan? How about taking it one step back and providing CD / DVD with just the new apps and dependancies, and updates that the user requires? For instance you install the Live CD so have the basic package. You log onto Al's virtual store and look at the descriptions of those apps available in whichever repo is available to you. You select those apps you want to try, and 48 hours later the CD / DVD arrives with not only those packages you requested, but all the updates for the base install. Next time around, the system remembers what you have already asked for so sends out the updates for those as well as the new requests. Additionally, you could have a monthly or bi-monthly subscription to send out all the updates that have come out during the previous period. If you don't like the package, you remove it from your personal list, and so won't get any further updates. This seems a cheaper and less difficult system to maintain. But it's unfortunately not that green, and more importantly I haven't got a clue as to how practical it is either! It also means that the cost to the end user is less as we aren't holding a returns fee with all the cost and implications that that entails; instead all they pay for is the cost of the CD / DVD, PP and a small mark up to cover running costs. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a really grand idea, and certainly would enjoy the challenge of something like this! The main issues I see with this are:- 1) Licensing - would it be 100% legal to redistribute the entire (main, restricted, multiverse, universe) repository? 2) Cost - it would need to be less than the cost of capped broadband - although for those people with no opportunity to get broadband this might not be a problem :) 3) Drive failure - disks being sent back and forth in the post might lead to a shorter lifespan? 4) Trust: Would a customer trust that the disk really does contain the repo and not some nasty spyware etc. Maybe a system with different levels. Bronze: You get one repo on the disk and can send the disk back once a month. Silver: You get two repos (e.g. Feisty and Gutsy) and can send the disk back twice a month. Gold: You get three repos (e.g. Dapper, Feisty and Gutsy) and can send the disk back four times a month. Platinum: You get all the repos for all versions of Ubuntu released so far (Warty through Gutsy) and can send the disk back as many times as you like. All disks would also contain the ISO images which match the version of Ubuntu being mirrored, and would clearly contain all packages for Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu, server etc. Of course for platinum I realise

Hi, I know a few people have used virtual box and I am thinking of using it to run a few windows programs. How easy is it to setup and use with orca. I think someone said it works well in the terminal, so once you have it running do you actually use this program to install windows. Or is it a windows emulator. The rest of the window would show settings for the current display. That's a strange thing to say, because you've already added an option menu for locations that works much the same way, like the one in network-admin. (I hope it's sharing the list of locations with network-admin.) Whether a list of objects should be presented in an option menu, a combo box, a listbox, or a text field with compulsory auto-complete depends not on the OS, but on the likely number of items and how prominent the list should be. For example, word processors (such as AbiWord) typically have an option menu or combo box for typeface selection in their toolbar, but a listbox for the same set of typefaces in their Font dialog. I am against using the combobox for such a central element of the dialog, since it hides all other information at the first time. Since -- as you pointed out -- most people will have only one display, I think it is quite prominent enough as an option menu, the same as in Windows. (And I know my Ascii art is dodgy, but I did intend it to be an option menu, not a combo box.) Especially there is no indication to find the arrangement and graphics card action in the combobox. [Ubuntu-BR] Erro no Deluge
Estava eu ontem baixando alguns arquivos torrents pelo DELUGE, quando ao pedir para acrescentar mias um link de torrent, ele travou. Me lembrou outro sistema naquele momento... Fui forçado a fechar o aplicativo e depois nada de voltar. Tentei pelos ícones, pelo menu e pelo Alt+F2 e nada, apenas o cursor 'girando'. Vi no Monitor do Sistema e nada do danado lá também. Removi e instalei-o de novo (via Automatix2) e tudo igual: nada. Alguém já passou por isso? Se eu for pelo terminal e digitar 'deluge' resolve (ou pelo menos me mostra os erros)? Olá Thiago, Tenho um kit combo de mouse e teclado wireless da Microsoft. Roda perfeitamente, porém as teclas especiais só funcionam no Ruindows. Pode comprar tranquilo! Além do iptraf tem também o ntop Par ainstalar: apt-get install ntop Chama ele na linha de comando pra registrar a senha do admin: ntop Depois de cadastrar a senha, dê um control-c para terminar esse processo e chame ele da seguinte forma: ntop -u ntop -i eth0 -w 3000 Onde: -u eh o usuario com o qual tu vais rodar ele -i se refere à interface de rede que ele vai 'escutar' -w se refere à porta na qual ele vai trabalhar para rodar em background [ libera o terminal ]. Caso não uses o quando fechares o terminal, o ntop fecha junto. Mas em princípio eu diria que podem ser várias coisas: 1 - A página, feita no MS Word ou no Front Page Express, usa a codificação Windows-1252 2 - A fonte que você escolheu como padrão para o conjunto de caracteres ocidental não tem todos os símbolos necessários. 3 - A página não está em português, mas em alguma lingua exótica. 4 - A página está em UTF-8 mesmo, mas com algum erro de codificação. 5 - As meta-tags da página dizem que ela está em uma codificação diferente daquele que realmente usa (isso é comum em sites feitos por pessoas que só acham que sabem o que estão fazendo) e o Firefox está usando a meta-tag como referência (e a opção auto-detectar Unicode está desligada). No caso do Windows, que é iso8859-1 a página carrega normal e o webdesigner vai dizer que é frescura de usuários de Linux esse troço de dizer que a página tem problema. Caros. O Suporte do Unibanco entrou em contato comigo hoje. O Técnico me orientou a utilizar um browser (linux) diferente do firefox. Sugeriu Netscape ou outro que não lembro o nome agora(me lembro que começa com S. :P ), pois neste caso não seria solicitada instalação do guardião e conseguiria usar o site normalmente. Conforme o técnico, eles estão trabalhando em uma solução para o linux, visto que é um sistema operacional mais robusto, e não necessita desta segurança. A previsão é sexta-feira para resolverem o problema. Vamos aguardar. Enquanto isto... Bom, não quis instalar outro browser, então instalei uma extensão do firefox chamada user agent switcher. Com a própria configuração default da extensão, consigo logar no site normalmente, sem precisar clicar em cancelar instalação como até agora. []s Allison Almeida. Eu utilizo para fazer as páginas o BlueFish[1] e para fazer o ftp eu utilizo o Gftp[2] se tu quiser um programa mais parecido com o Dreamweaver eu li que o pessoal está indicando bastante o Nvu[3], não posso falar dele pois nunca utilizei o mesmo! Olá amigo, conforme já relatado pelo pessoal existe muitas opções de programas para estas suas necessidades, porém eu sugiro como editor HTML o BlueFish (para quem esta acostumado com o Frontpage acho uma boa opção) que vc pode instalar via APT facilmente (sudo apt-get install bluefish). E para FTP embora as boas opções citadas, existe um plugin para o Firefox chamado de FireFTP que é muito simples e vc tem numa página web dentro do seu navegador as mesmas opções que existem nos principais softwares do mercado. Outra dica legal para copiar e colar um determinado conteúdo. Selecione e mantenha selecionado o conteúdo desejado, va até o local onde deseja colar o mesmo e clique com o botão de scroll (rodinha) do mouse no local e pronto. Pode ser usado tanto no terminal como qualquer outro programa do Ubuntu. Pois é... Uso o FireFTP também, mas uma ferramenta integrada com o sistema operacional me parecia mais confiável... Caro Amigos: Ainda estou conectando via terminal através do comando sudo pon dsl provider e sudo poff dsl provider para desconectar. Alguém poderia sugerir uma forma de fazer isso de forma automática ?
