Hi all,

As nobobdy has complained, the next meeting will take place on Thursday,
November 1st at 15:00 UTC. Be there or be square.

Topics will include but are not limited to:

* Moving forward with the gallery art.ubuntu.com plans
* Defining concise design and palette ideas for Hardy
* Defining exactly what we want to change for Hardy (basically everything)
  and how to get there

ps-sorry for the late reply, i was looking for my motherboard manual
which was stacked away somewhere deep.

Is this the first time you are trying Ubuntu? If not, did any previous
versions work properly? Check if you have the proper drivers in
xorg.conf for your motherboard on board graphics card
(http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=2model=377l1=3l2=14l3=149l4=0).
I have used 6.06 since its release on the same system and if i remember
correctly there was an issue with the live CD last time too and i had used
alternate CD. But since than dapper had worked without any problem.

As regards the current situation with freeze-up/crashes and corrupted
graphicswell since there was no solution on the horizon and since i saw no
hope of a fix i decided to go by my hunch and i have just finished
clean re-installation of gutsy using alternate CD(ubuntu7.10-alternate-amd64)

And now i am trying it out and uptil now no freeze-up and no graphics
corruption!!!hurray,,,happy days are back again!.
i have not installed flash or java plug-in uptill now(which i suspect could
have done something last time). I am going to be alert as to when the trouble
starts this time(if it starts at all). i am keeping my fingers crossed.

Just a quick note. For about the first time, the BBC have included Linux
as an option in one of their polls, so we're quickly trying to get
people to vote for it, thus demonstrating to them that Linux is
something they should be taking more seriously.

 The poll is on http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/

 And reads:

 =

 VOTE
 Will you be buying Leopard?
*Yes - I need new spots*
*No - I'm happy with Tiger*
*No - Linux is my OS of choice*
 *No - I'm a Windows user

 =

*Some people over on the Ubuntu-UK list noted that when the poll first
appeared, the Linux option was missing, but was added within minutes!

I'm actually making it a point now to browse to the BBC site once a day

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu TV Advert

2007-10-28 Thread Daniel Lamb
Surely someone must have a contact in tv or a tv show?

Wouldn’t it be better to do something jointly with dell or someone and
promote it on a breakfast show or a gadget show, they might well be
interested in it, once that is done it could be followed up a lot easier by
radio and papers so greatly reducing the costs overall.

If enough shows are approached and then badgered by us then they might be
willing to do it.

Daniel

Think about what we could do with the advert, the talent of the

could show Compiz Fusion against Aero. Make a joke about the cost,
something like a fake shopping channel where the orange guy shows off

price must be wrong on the screen. You get the idea.

Yeah I think it would be a good idea if it could be funded.

between channels like Bravo / MenMotors and ITV / Ch4?

I'm wondering if we could start a donation fund then ask Canonical to
match what we raise or go directly to Mark Shuttleworth or something.

Think about what we could do with the advert, the talent of the
Open-Source community coming together with ideas and contributions. We
could show Compiz Fusion against Aero. Make a joke about the cost,
something like a fake shopping channel where the orange guy shows off
this fab Operating System and the cost is on the screen as £0.00 and all
hell breaks loose with people ringing in for it etc. and they think the
price must be wrong on the screen. You get the idea.

  What do you think?

I think TV would be a bit expensive (toyed with the idea myself)
Maybe a newspaper or radio ad?

The bbc click episode is a good one. It introduces Open Source in a

The same morning this was broadcast, I was displaying on my Infopoint

If I give a talk to local computer clubs about open source I may often
include some of it to illustrate a point.

Worth noting what might be obvious that:
- News items or journalists items etc are free (to us)
- Learning how to manage 'News', publicity, and how to initiate it, is
a most valuable art, and is something which is worth taking on board.
- However brilliant something is and well proven and reliable and

I'm not sure how many people work professionally with ubuntu on this
list - but I think a major news item would be the number of companies
now turning to ubuntu ahead of linux. It's all about having a
eye-catching statistic/event. The main advantage that Ubuntu has, is
that it has ballast behind it to back it up - rather than just become
'another headline'.

I'm not sure how far Paladine is getting with the UUSN, but to couple
the launch of something like that - nicely integrated with the some
exposure to the excellent ubuntu-forums and a bit on the 3D desktop
would grab some media attention.

It's a shame we couldn't usurp the launch of Leopard with a nice BBC
article the week before on Gutsy. It is such articles that can bolster
the Public's general opinion of Linux (IMHO). If Gutsy is given no poll
on the BBC website (but Leopard is) then the public are going to have
the view that leopard is someone bigger (and better).

It's also a question of branding. The Ubuntu brand is getting to a
stage where it being 'GNU/Linux' is decreasing in importance. Just as
'GNU' was dropped by a number of people from Linux to make it appear
more user friendly; Ubuntu has taken over where Linux has dropped off.

I first heard about Linux, then learned of the GNU project. I will give
all credit to RMS and GNU for placing substantial effort into the
development of Free Software, however, in written articles I would still
refer to my system as a Linux-based system. I digress.

My point is that Ubuntu is building up a strong brand image, and as said
previously in this thread - the brand image needs integrating strongly
across all sections and then publicising through case studies and
concrete gains. We need some flagship products and communication with
editors/journalists to get articles written. IMHO a TV advert or a
newspaper article isn't what Ubuntu needs yet. If the consumer can't
yet go out and get an ubuntu-powered PC from their local store - what
point is there of advertising it to them?

Although I love everything about ubuntu - the majority of British
Consumers won't go out and burn an iso - and the main reason I put this
isn't because the task itself is difficult - but it's the data
management. Where does the users current data end up?

There are hurdles to overcome before reaching the mass-market through
advertising. I think we should wait a little while (though let's start
raising funds now).

(Sorry for the long mail :))

I have been following this item with great interest and believe that all
the comments made have been reasonable and apposite. However, while I
can understand the desire to see Ubuntu more upfront than it is, I have
to put the question why not? Surely the main thrust must come from
Canonical and, if we think it hasn't, then I would suggest that our
contact man asks a few questions in the appropriate place. Then, pending
on the answers, our strategy could be reviewed.

Is there a utility that works with orca for doing this.

This is not a place to ask general support questions. Such questions should be
asked on the Ubuntu forums, or on the
ubuntu user's mailing list.

As to working with wireless, at this point, network manager is not entirely
accessible, so it may be better to work
with the wireless devices from the command-line and using
/etc/network/interfaces. I hope to contact upstream to see
about getting network manager more accessible for use with orca.

If you got the rt-kernel running and if you are in group audio,
everything should be at its best...

i don't understand here what you are referring to with group audio.
 could you please explain?

In Linux you have certain priviledges as:

1.) a user (quite little but sufficient for dayly work).
2.) a member of one or more user-groups

To make audioapps run with the needed power in Linux smart people
invented a machanism that gives you, as the normal user certain
priviledges to access your computers hardware. To allow this the
usergroup audio is used:

audio:x:29:jason

in the file /etc/group says, that the normal user jason is member of
group audio.

@audio  -   rtprio  99
@audio  -   memlock 86
@audio  -   nice-10

in the file /etc/security/limits.conf

says, that members of group audio are allowed to run software with
realtime-priority 99, lock down 86 bytes of memory and start
processes that are 10 stages more importent then normal processes
running with the default nice -0.

Those priviledges can only be granted this way, if your running kernel
allows it. Thats why you need to run the RT-Kernel from Ubuntu
Studio/Universe and you need to be in group audio (can be set with the
user-tool in the system-preferences menu), to have fun with jack/Linux
Audio.

that helps? ;-)

Me responde aí

Sistemas operacionais montados pra fins didáticos eu conheço desde a
época do Minix, cujo tamanho permite q vc escreva o kernel literalmente

encontradas algumas urnas falsas aqui no DF. Em Alagoas rolou aquele

2007-10-28 Thread Fernando Bunn
la.
Alguém sabe o que pode ser?
Obrigado

Eu instalei o plugin do icedtea para testar (a versão oficial e a do
repositório do Matthias Klose, segundo o link passado antes), e apenas
a segunda funciona com o firefox (e mal). Eu prefiro instalar o
Swiftweasel e o Blackdown, que funcionam melhor.
O que eu fiz:
http://derkosak.blogspot.com/2007/10/ubuntu-64-bits-e-java-no-firefox-quase.html
funcionam.

Segue a saída no

o usbview tenho a mensagem:
Can not open the file /proc/bus/usb/devices
Verify that you have USB compiled into your kernel,
have the USB core modules loaded, and have the

Alguém pode me ajudar?

[ubuntu-marketing] The ubuntu.com website

2007-10-28 Thread Martin Ahnelöv
Hello.
I'll make this quick and to the point. I'm sorry if ubuntu-marketing
isn't the right place for this email: in that case, please forward it to
the correct instance.

From my experience, Ubuntu.com looks a bit weird in - at least - IE6 (I
don't know about IE7, but I've heard that it uses the same rendering
engine as the one in IE6). Since we are trying to sell an alternative
product, we'll have to make sure that people using competing systems
and browsers can reach us so we can win them over. So, could the code be
looked over so that it is presentable even on MS-products?

Things (from the top of my head) that is a bit damaged (you can
probably spot some more):
* PNG-transparency.
* Some images overlapping text.
* Div-tag positioning/size-errors.

Some pages I noted it on (but I'm sure there is more):
* http://www.ubuntu.com/
* http://www.ubuntu.com/products/WhatIsUbuntu/desktopedition

I'm sorry about the sparse information, but I do not have any
Windows-computer available at the moment.

Can you spot any errors (that haven't been mentioned)? Who should be
contacted about this issue?

redémarrer internet / routeur

2007-10-28 Thread numarrou
bonjour

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

[Bug 157962] gtk-qt-engine prevents GTK apps from opening

2007-10-28 Thread integr8e
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gtk-qt-engine

After realizing I couldn't open any GTK apps, I ran the command
firefox in Konsole and this was its output:

~$ firefox
QPainter::begin: Cannot paint null pixmap
QPainter::setPen: Will be reset by begin()
QPainter::setFont: Will be reset by begin()
QPainter::end: Missing begin() or begin() failed
The program 'firefox-bin' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 449 error_code 2 request_code 53 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I opened Konqueror (opened fine) and searched kubuntuforum.org for an any posts
regarding this error, and found the below:
http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3082114.msg64797#msg64797

Following the instruction posted, I uninstalled the gtk-qt-engine
package, ran the firefox command in Konsole again, and, VOILA, Firefox
opened.

This apparently isn't a new bug, just it hasn't been reported before.
My GTK apps look like mess without the gtk-qt-engine installed, but I'm
just happy they run.

[Bug 157961] black window when using desktop effects

2007-10-28 Thread Kirk Bridger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz-gnome

After running gutsy for some time (hours), using the Extra Desktop
setting, windows, upon being maximized, begin showing up as black rather
than rendering the window contents. I am able to resize the window and
move it around normally, but the contents remain black. The only way to
resolve this once it happens is to resize the window until it is very
small, and then the contents are rendered. If a window is not
resizable, then I have to disable the desktop effects setting to restore
the window contents. The hard part here is that the desktop settings
window itself is not resizable, meaning when this happens I have to
click around in the black window until I hit the right area to disable
effects.

[Bug 155461] Re: Upgrade problems Feisty - Gutsy

2007-10-28 Thread luis
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 134858 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/134858

This really does not seem to be a duplicate of #134858. It's clear that
for that bug the package where the bug shows up is more or less random,
whereas here it always start with libpam0g. My upgrade is still going,
but the list of files that fail so far is identical to the posted. Race
conditions should depend heavily on the particular hardware, thus will
show up in different files, but this bug always start at libpam0g. I
didn't have Pidgin, just the gnome-desktop. I have a few packages
installed outside ubuntu (Codeweavers cross office, latest ATI binary
drivers, ...), but it's mostly an up-to-date Feisty install.

[Bug 135233] Re: Sony PCG-SRX51P/B suspend fails

2007-10-28 Thread Russel Winder
I recently tried to install Gutsy on this machine and that was
essentailly a disaster -- Gutsy appears unable to boot from the install
CD-ROM (cf. Bug #141646) and if an installation is forced via doing a
safe boot, it only works in 800x600 mode. I therefore reinstalled
Feisty from my original install CD-ROM and then updating and now suspend
seems to work fine. In fact this machine has never worked better.
Feisty rules, Gutsy sucks :-)

[Bug 141646] Re: Gutsy LiveCD won't start on Vaio SRX51 SRX41

2007-10-28 Thread Russel Winder
I would like to add my voice to this. I have a SRX51P/B and the
downloaded Gutsy install CD-ROM (the standard one) refuses to boot
sensibly -- it appears to boot fine but as soon as anything associated
with the display and Xorg is supposed to happen I just get a black
screen. I forced a boot in safe mode (which gave me 640x480 screen) and
did an installation but this led to only being able to use the machine
in 800x600 mode which is just not acceptable.

I have given up on Gutsy completely, and reinstalled Feisty from my
original install CD-ROM plus updating in the usual way. This works
fine.

I'm afraid my report would be Feisty 9/10, Gutsy 0/10 -- Gutsy just is
not up to scratch :-(

PS I think my Bug #157077 may effectively be a replica of this bug
report.

[Bug 128315] Re: Resume immediately after Suspend due to some WAKE event

2007-10-28 Thread Russel Winder
I have a PCG SRX51P/B. I tried installing Gutsy on it a few days ago
and that was a disaster -- it booted and worked except that the Xorg
system refused to work in any thing other than 800x600 mode (cf.
Bug#141646 and Bug #157077). I therefore reinstalled Feisty from my
original install discs and network upgrades and it works fine. Before
the attempt to use Gutsy, suspend simply failed for me on this machine
(cf. Bug #135233) however since the complete reinstall suspend now works
fine. I have no idea why, but I am now not unhappy.

[Bug 157968] Keypad decimal key doesn't work in register with French (alternative) keyboard layout

2007-10-28 Thread Fred
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnucash

In Gutsy, keypad decimal key doesn't work out-of-the-box in register.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open a Gnucash file with at least one account
2. Open an account
3. Try to create a new transaction with '42.42' in Withdrawal using the
keypad

Actual results:
Keypad decimal key does nothing (so you end up with '4242' when you try to
enter '42.42')

Expected results:
42.42 (or more precisely 42,42 since I use a the French locale)
Keypad decimal key should be mapped to the correct decimal character for the
locale ('.' or ',').

Does this happen every time?
Yes.

Other information:
$ locale
LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE=fr_FR.UTF-8
LC_NUMERIC=fr_FR.UTF-8
LC_TIME=fr_FR.UTF-8

LC_ADDRESS=fr_FR.UTF-8
LC_TELEPHONE=fr_FR.UTF-8
LC_MEASUREMENT=fr_FR.UTF-8
LC_IDENTIFICATION=fr_FR.UTF-8
LC_ALL=

From Gnome Keybord Properties : I use the France Alternative (France
Autre in french) layout.

Workaround :
If I use the France layout in Gnome Keybord Properties, it works.

I have already reported this bug upstream. It is still unclear whether it is a
gnucash bug or a layout one.
In any case, it should work out of the box.

[Bug 70745] Re: Erlang-doc-html conflicts packages erlang et al in Edgy Eft

2007-10-28 Thread Vsevolod Krishchenko
Me too. I cannot understand why it works in my debian sid (same
packages?) but does not work in my ubuntu gutsy.

Ok, I can live with wget -c -m http://www.erlang.org/doc

[Bug 153233] Re: Keyboard freezes in nautilus when support for entereing complex characters is enabled in nautilus

2007-10-28 Thread jenhsun
Problem solved.

Please take a look at this bug report
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/scim/+bug/34282

And the most important is the document in your
/usr/share/doc/scim/README.Debian.gz

If nothing wrong with your keyboard input and your system but only the input of
complex characters, you should take a look into the scim documents.
I think I made a big mistake not doing this.
