Probably more things I forgot... I agree with pretty much everything you say :-) I began hacking on the gtk color definitions last night as well. One of the challenges is going to be creating work arounds for dark color themeing bugs in specific apps. Some observations for the future: 1. Perhaps we need to change the orange colour, perhaps it would be better to be darkened. 2. I set the nautilus-location colour simply to @selected_bg_color. For Human-Murrine I used a mix statement to lighten the orange a little so that it blended better with murrine's glaze, but it won't work well with the new colourscheme. We can change this later, especially after any changes to the selected background (i.e. orange) colour. The bright orange seems out of place on a dark background. I think we would be better off going with something less contrasty. 3. Of course, the metacity theme doesn't look very nice anymore. I suggest we adopt a similar theme to UbuntuStudio, but use a darker brown rather than black. Oh, we could arrange it so that the inactive window is 90% shaded to the background colour, so it will blend with the darkened menubar - that would be a nice effect. [ubuntu-art] Design of a complete user interface
Just a quick question for discussion sorry if this has been discussed before). Who in Ubuntu is responsible for the overall main user interface? i.e. Placement of gnome panel or panels, placement of menu and icons on the panel and how this fits in with the theme. Because it strikes me that many of the themes which are currently only mockups require more or less radical UI changes. Ones which are already 'in production' like New Wave are ones which haven't messed with the UI layout. I'm not necessarily suggesting we should radically change the UI, I'm just suggesting that from a design point of view it seems odd to have an art team which doesn't appear to be able to make decisions about the the UI as a whole. Or am I wrong? If so, how do we communicate with those people who do make UI layout changes? Are some of them on the art team? Or are we in fact just a glorified colour changing team? Hmmm * In addition to the vertical gradient present in many themes there is a central horizontal gradient too. I think this also contributes to the matte feeling. * The danger of the very tangible buttons is that other ui elements may seem dull in comparison. See for example the tabs which appear a bit flat. If no one is responsible for this (ie, the decisions are made ad hoc by the programmers of the various apps, gnome panel, etc etc) then that strikes me as a problem. (think of walking from a sunny area into a dark room) This may need some good user testing. Also testers should probably look at this with their screen's brightness at different levels. When I unplug my laptop my screen's brightness decreases to 50 - 60% to save power. Also apple machines always come packed with latest technologies. For ex. they started shipping graphics cards with DVI output interface long time before other vendors. Macbook seems to be favorite among FOSS developers. Check photos from UDS on planet Ubuntu you will know what I mean. As for disadvantage they are overpriced in my opinion. And if you plan to run on linux you will have some binary only driver, mostly graphics card but you may need for wireless too. I would like some clarification on what Mr. Slytherin :) has written. Macs are favorites among FOSS developers, but do they use the machine with Linux or with OS X? I have no idea, but you might? And I agree they are grossly overpriced, but getting them from a reseller, rather than an Apple Store, its comes out much cheaper. --- e) getting the latest generations of apple ipod to work under gnulinux is not so much a technical issue, as apple's extreme reluctance to work with the FOSS community and allow fair enduser rights for all customers. Hmm, I must say Niyam's mail has compelled me to throw in my POV, considering the fact I am going thru my 4th sem exams. But what are you trying to say here? Trying to sync ipod with Linux (you know that's easy), or running a Linux-kernel on the ipod? (possible with Rockbox) so, in purchasing a macbook, do i wish to convey my support with dollars, to a company whose business practices are at times quite anti-customer? I have been going through this debate since the last 2 years now, and its the sole reason why I have stuck to my uber-cool desktop. But if I think, isn't M$ more anti-customer? They practically don't give a damn to what the consumer market says, Apple at least does that (I have seen Apple's OS and devices show drastic improvement after every iteration, most of the consumer grievances seem to be sorted out, yet they do keep a few cards to themselves) nevertheless, i do have a few points on why i feel compelled to purchase a macbook running ubuntu, ubuntustudio, and debian, for myself. I have Liferea installed on a laptop and a desktop (both connected to my home LAN). Currently, I have the same feeds on both. When reading on one machine, I just click past material I think I've already read on the other. But this is getting tiresome now that I have a lot of feeds, and I'd like to be able to sync the two copies of Liferea, so that I see a single version whichever machine I happen to be using. Sadly, extensive searching on the internet suggests that setting this up is tricky and messy. Any of you clever folks found an idiot-proof way of doing this? Mac, To sync my feeds up between my main laptop, Ubuntu-vmware image on my Windows work-supplied laptop and the desktop in my home office (aka back of garage! :)) I just rsync my liferea profile to my home/backup server. I have alias's set so I can 'put' and 'get' as required. Although a bit manual, it means I can both backup my feeds/articles and push/pull them to which ever machine I'm using at the time. Below is the alias's from my .bash_alias if it helps: alias lifeget='/usr/bin/rsync -avz --delete --force -e ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/mnt/backup/stuart/LifereaProfile/ /home/stuart/.liferea_1.4' alias lifeput='/usr/bin/rsync -avz --delete --force -e ssh /home/stuart/.liferea_1.4/ [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/mnt/backup/stuart/LifereaProfile' I do basically the same for my thunderbird and firefox profiles also, but as well as having aliases for these, I have a bash file which has a minimal amount of checking in it, to try and avoid writing the wrong way! If you've got a network drive mounted you can put a link to somewhere on it in place of the ~/.liferea folder and then the different machines will share the same profile. It might do weird things if you try and have two instances of the program using the profile at the same time but it should work if you avoid that. Procedure to set this up: - Move ~/.liferea onto the network drive - Run ln -s /path/to/where/you/put/.liferea ~/.liferea I should point out that I haven't tried this so keep a copy of the directory safe to put it back if it doesn't work. Mounting drive - still having problems
Hi, Please forgive me still asking for help trying to get this to work - I don't understand why not despite manuals and this list's help. The drive just does not mount this way. I need to be able to use different mount points at different non-clashing times. I clearly hear the difference when I record my music at 48khz vs. 44.1khz. Another extremely important thing to know about sampling rates and multitrack recording and effect plug-in chains (a mastering engineer told me), is data bits get mangled in the process, so the higher the sampling rate the more accurate interpolation you get. He basically told me, I should have recorded my project at least at 48khz but ideally 96khz. It sounds like the article only applies to two track final mixdowns. I still hear a difference. I think I can hear the difference too but to be honest I've never been put threw a double blind test to see if I really am right. at the end of the day the point I was hoping to make is for the many of our projects, 44K works fine. In the spirit of cost effective solutions like Ubuntu Studio, 44K is less demanding on the systems. So we should be able to get less powerful and less expensive systems to work well. For those of us who want to use a higher sampling ratego for it! But for those of us who wont, no worries. [Ubuntu-BR] Problemas com eth0 Realtek Ubuntu 8.04
Pessoal estou com problemas de rede. Já andei pesquisando nos fóruns e só achei referência em sites em inglês. Seguinte: Possuo um Acer Aspire 3100 placa de rede Realtek (RTL-8139...) Sempre conectei no meu trabalho que oferece ips dinamicos, mas após a última atualização do Ubuntu, a placa de rede ficou esquisita. Ele conecta na rede, navega durante um período e depois ele para de trafegar. O endereço ip fica sempre inalterado, mesmo eu zerando através do ifconfig ou apagando o conteúdo dos arquivos /var/lib/dhcp3/dhclient.leases e dhcliente.eth0.leases /var/run/dhclient.eth0.pid e conectando em outros pontos de rede. Já coloquei o ipv6 em off, já desinstalei a rede com o purge, até o avahi eu removi. Com a remoção deste deu uma melhorada mas continua com o mesmo problema. Para eu navegar de tempos em tempos em tenho que desconectar o cabo, apagar o conteúdo dos arquivos citados acima, e reconectar o cabo para conseguir navegar por mais uns minutos. Aguém tem idéia do que pode ser, porque as vezes as soluções em inglês que encontrei para mim são meio confusas, no fórum ubuntu-br, encontrei a solução do ipv6 em off. Mas ainda estou com problemas. No Ubuntu 7.10 realmente essa placa só funcionava se fizesse uma alteração no Xorg (não me lembro qual no momento), porém no 8.04 ela está funcionando normalmente, com todos os efeitos funcionando. Pessoal não sei se foi só comigo, mas hoje apareceram vários (vários mesmos) updates para mim. Compiz, xserver, firefox 3 rc1 e xulrunner, gnome applets, gnome common, gnome games, language packs, evince, e várias outras coisas. Alguém sabe o motivo pra ter saído tudo junto, ou se é coincidência, e alguém sabe dizer algum(as) coisas novas legais e importantes que vieram com esse monte de updates. Por exemplo correção para algum bug comum que agente via por aqui Ou por exemplo, correção oficial para o problema do Consola e Rato, etc. Eu li as modificações de alguns pacotes, mas é meio ruim ler de todas e alguns não são bem específicos (como os de linguagem). Acho que é melhor não ter uma lista, já que o google indexa tudo...mas tenho certeza que ele não indexa o que eu tenho na minha mente e não está em algum lugar tão fácil. Esta não é uma lista de suporte; quem precisa de suporte (a) paga pelo suporte da Canonical (b) procura em fóruns como o Fórum Ubuntu Linux - PT (c) procura no Google (o endereço do fórum, por exemplo, encontrei procurando por indexadores). Agora o cara faz a busca, acha e diz: vai no google que o primeiro resultado é sobre isso. Por quê não colocou o endereço? Isso não é da o peixe, pois ele ainda vai fazer o processo seja lá compilar ou procurar o pacote. Sabe, enquanto nerd, foi uma coisa orgiástica para mim fazer meu modem Conexant funcionar, e tive pouca ajuda da lista (o José Geraldo foi fundamental, com o seu tutorial de usar o alien -- me ensinou muita coisa, como, por exemplo, procurar melhor antes de perguntar). Teve um que até disse para eu procurar -- como, se meu modem não funcionava?!? (sim, eu era da turma do dual boot na época disso). Já passar o link _é sim_ dar o peixe, porque o sujeito deixa de aprender a buscar corretamente. Se já tivesse sido passado o link, quando ele tivesse outro problema -- às favas, a lista me diz! E é isso que não se deve permitir, porque senão estaremos criando uma raça de usuários como os winusers, que perguntam até mesmo como se faz para desligar o PC... Para quer blog e artigos? Eles dão o peixe né? Pois ensina ali como fazer. Blogs são diários, o cara escreve o que quiser nele. No meu eu falo sobre Ciência da Informação, por exemplo. Falo de SL, mas apenas quando ligado à biblioteca. O Hamacker escreve tutoriais de tudo que há no Ubuntu (obrigado, Hamacker, por me ensinar a instalar o Beryl e o Compiz Fusion!). Artigos do wiki são escritos para serem lidos e aplicados no PC de quem precise das funcionalidades descritas (obrigado, artigo sobre GnuPrivacyGuard!). Blogs e artigos ensinam a usar o Linux e o Ubuntu, de forma bem melhor que listas de discussão. Se o sujeito procurar nesses lugares antes de perguntar à lista, com certeza ele não vai receber um procura no Google, e nem a lista vai ser acusada de ser um estábulo. Valeu! Pessoal, Quando utilizei o driver Z600 para configuração da Lexmark X1195, descompactei os arquivos no diretório lexmark e procedi a instalação.Tudo ok, mas pergunto: Esse diretório inicialmente criado pode ser deletado? O processo de instalação moveu os arquivos necessários para alguma pasta oculta do sistema ou permanece usando este diretório? - Procurei pastas como lexmark, z600 no sistema de arquivos e não as localizei, daí minha questão. Agradeço a informação, estou dando uma limpa no home e quero tirar essa dúvida. Mas eu tô enfrentando alguns problemas com a interface gráfica. Na verdade o X sobe numa boa, mas o Gnome, hora sim hora não, não entra. Chego a ouvir todo o som da inicialização, ver o splash do gnome, ele pinta o pano de fundo, mas quando vai carregar o panel simplesmente não acontece nada. Tenho o skype instalado e funcionando no startup do gnome, chego a ouvir o seu som entrando. Quando faço ps, vejo o trackerd, o stardict, o NetworkManager, todos os processos, mas o gnome não entra. Tenho que fazer vários boots até que ele entra. Quando entro com o kernel antingo (o padrão do ubuntu) não tenho problemas. Mas uma informação, estou entrando via startx. Desabilitei o gdm porque com ele não entrava era nada. O que eu queria era idéias de onde procurar eventuais problemas e soluções. Aproveitar para tentar aprender um pouco sobre a interface gráfica. Onde fica o log do gnome? Sei dos logs em /var/logs/* mas não vejo nada relacionado ao gnome em si. Também, como vejo o log do boot? Aquele conjunto de saídas da inicialização? Eu não queria mudar a porta, o problema é que a MALDITA Brasil Telecom(de Campo Grande - Mato Grosso do Sul), barra a porta 80(e muitas outras) para que o cliente seja obrigado a assinar um plano empresarial para hospedar um site. Alterei o arquivo ports.conf para a porta 8000, funciona 100% se eu acessar de dentro assim: http://localhost:8000 ou assim http://lsbrum.no-ip.org:8000 Porem de fora nada feito! Alguem poderia testar aí? Como eu fico sabendo quais portas estão sendo barradas pela operadora? Meu Ubuntu é o 8.04 Desktop 64 bits Meu apache é Apache/2.2.8 Meu modem é um Speedtouch 510 Router(eu acho) Minha internet é de 1mbps pela BrT e UOL. Meu site é http://lsbrum.no-ip.org ou http://lsbrum.no-ip.org:8000 (tem como tirar esse 8000 daí?) P.S.: Tentei liberar as portas 80 e 8000 na configuração do modem, porem o erro persiste. Nilson e Evandro, O preço é convidativo, já o encontrei a 900 pratas, mas o fato de ter que usar um HD externo (ou pendrive ou drive de CD) é o que chateia. Quebra um galho quando se faz apresentações, mas para carregar um sistema com uma série de aplicativos, é complicado. Pelo que li, ele já vem com um linux na memo (HD) de 4Gb, não me lembro qual. Pelo que pede o Ubuntu, acho que um 7.04 daria para rodar... Detalhes: Se liga no tamanho da tela e na resolução, é pequena e joga apenas 860x480, se não me engano e processador 900: Vale? Problema resolvido. Não sei o que estava acontecendo, mas criei uma nova conta e o problema não se repetiu. Tentei apagar alguns diretórios de usuários como .compiz .config/compiz e nada. Aí fiz o mais radical, excluí o usuário e criei de novo. Olá Lucas, Esse é um problema novo pra mim. Espero que alguém na lista possa te ajudar e se você encontrar a solução eu gostaria de saber também. :) Quanto a porta: se você não estiver usando a porta padrão (80), será obrigatória a definição pelo cliente da porta onde o Apache está escutando, ou seja, a pessoa vai ter que digitar o :8000. No caso do 8.04 na flash do EEE, quando resta de espaço na home? Vou ver de perto esse note, não estou conseguindo visualizar o tamanho da tela e resolução... a gente se acostuma com telas grandes e muita resolução e se perde nessa hora, só vendo mesmo.
