I think https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ needs a new theme, especially now with the new visual identity. I don't know if there's work under way already, if there are at least plans. But we can find out, if you are interested. http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/ also needs a new theme. The brainstorm logo/header and the icons on http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/tour/ are my work. I already have a rather obvious idea for a new logo/header matching the new identity, but maybe you will come up with something better. Wouldn't mind to see those icons replaced with something that works better with the other ones or ideally a complete new set for the site. I worked with the guy that developed the site, initially. Don't know who's in charge now, but I can ask him. Once again, if you are interested. Rootstock for ARMv5
Hello, I'd like to create a Ubuntu ARM root file system based on the 10.04 LTS release using the rootstock tool. The problem is that I'm stuck with my current AT91sam9260 processor which only supports ARMv5 (rootstock in 9.10 and 10.04 dropped support for it). What do you think would be the ideal path to follow to get an ARMv5-friendly rootstock? I'm ready to put the resources to recompile the whole source repository. Any suggestions on how to proceed would be very much appreciated. Hi All I have recently installed LXDE alongside Gnome in Ubuntu 10.04. After starting the system I just looked at the System monitor to see the RAM usage in each case. GNOME uses about 270 MB of RAM, LXDE uses 185 and OpenBox uses 165 MB. However with GNOME/Openbox the processors were showing 90-95% use. So among the Ubuntu variants, does any one use any other DE other than the regular GNOME/KDE. In terms of installed size and memory (RAM) use which Desktop Environment / Window Manager would be most small / efficient. Say the whole system installed on around 1GB and RAM of around 125MB. And how can this be done. I know i can install the DE/WM in parallel to gnome, but will it be possible to remove Gnome and install the other DE /WM. Is this at all possible to install just the base OS and them chose which DE / WM and apps i chose to install. Well, it is quiet hard to exactly say that my system uses 160MB of ram, depends on various factors, like your ram, services running, applications running, size of swap... Yes it is definitely possible to completely remove Gnome and install other DE's either manually -- use Synaptic package manager or https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD (I haven't tried, but should work AFAIK) and install everything starting from network manager to audio players... [ubuntu-in] Lucid installations without internet
Hello All, I have recently installed Lucid on a 64 bit computer, but I do not have internet access at the speeds I need to install the additional softwares I need. So I went to synaptic and selected all the softwares I want to install and then clicked on apply, thus I got links to all the files I need to download. A friend is downloading these files at a broadband connection. I will install these files with sudo dpkg -i *.deb I now need to install it on 2 other 64 bit computers, and create identical installations. So I can use these downloads many times over. My problem was related to my system being able to see the wireless networks but would not connect to them via the gnome network applet. The applet would consistently throw up a box requesting the passphrase which just kept looping and opening again when the passphrase was entered. As stated, installing wicd solved the problem at that time. Interestingly a few months after that my hard drive failed and I decided to ditch Windows and just installed 9.10 onto the new drive. From that point on the gnome network applet worked perfectly even handling global changes when I switched from my wired, work network which had various proxy settings to my home wireless set-up which didn't. My Asus eee 1000H is affected by bug /545443. I have a clean install Ubuntu 10.4 and can only connect to the internet by ethernet. Can I download and then load into grub an earlier ubuntu kernel eg the latest 9.1 kernel so that I can use this until the bug /545443 is sorted out and I can then update the 10.4 kernel and revert to using that? I have a need to run an application that depends on these settings to optimise speed but have found that Ubuntu has no make.conf file which is where I would normally expect to find/tweak these settings. Basically I need to ensure that Ubuntu is multiprocessor aware and that it is making use of all the processors and/or cores when a program designed to use them all is run. There is no make.conf as each package will define what it needs separately. There are gcc defaults depending on the version, but they aren't accessible to easily change. I don't see why you need to change global settings to affect one application? CFLAGS is an environment variable that is fed to the [gcc] compiler at build time: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CFLAGS. It isn't really a setting as such. And if you want to change it you will need to recompile whatever the app or library is that needs it to be different. I'm not sure what the Ubuntu packagers use normally, nor if you can read how it was set after a binary has been compiled, but the CFLAGS var *can* be different for each and every package built. The issue is now sorted as a result of me re-reading the man pages properly this time and noticing that you can set the required flag as an option when you build the run command at the shell. So no need to mess with system wide settings for one application as someone pointed out. Interestingly the 15GiB file was processed seven minutes faster with the flag set than without so at least I know it works :) Lesson learnt: RTFM (thoroughly) Matthew I just got fed up with a desktop taking 14 days to build! I know what you mean. The phrase # emerge -uavDNt world still brings me out in a cold sweat :) I seem to remember a Ubentu or Genbuntu fork being talked about in the past but don't know if it ever got off the ground? I used grsync to restore my /home after a clean install of 10.04, but although it restored the folders, it didn't restore the contents. They were backed up OK though, so I copied them over manually. I've looked at my settings, and they seem OK. I had ignore existing and skip newer checked, but my /home was empty anyway so that shouldn't be a problem. Any suggestions on what I did wrong? TIA Dianne Hello Dianne, I believe that as soon as you login to the desktop a series of default folders are created (Documents, Pictures, etc) so if you had ignore existing there option checked then all files and sub folders in the defaults would probably be skipped. Also login into the desktop creates a number of .gnome and .somethingelse files and folders for user configuration settings of the desktop and standard apps, so some of those files may not have copied back accross. I usually have a seperate /home partition and before logining into the new distributions desktop I login via a virtual terminal and rename my /home/username folder to something else ( /home/username-old ). Thanks for this Liam. Since my netbook is dual boot I have decided to keep Ubuntu 10.4 and use it when it is convenient to go online by ethernet and when I need wireless operation to boot into XP. Hopefully it will not be too long before the 10.4 kernel will be tweaked to kill off this annoying bug. Apart from that issue I think 10.4 netbook remix is great. [ubuntu-uk] Running off a USB connected HDD?
Hi Folks, I have a 9.10 32-bit system on my internal SATA drive and ive been trying out 10.04 64-bit on an external connected IDE drive on USB (usb2 I believe). I find that the 10.04 system seems sluggish in comparison. Would it be because im using USB connection? I done a similar test on a different machine back in release 8.04 / 8.10 but that had an internal IDE drive instead, in that case the speeds seemed similar. Todo foi ben, é máis rápido, tes maior produtividade e todo o que ti queiras pero cando subo os ficheiros, launchpad respóndeme dicindo que hai erros e non se poden cargar. Para mim valeu apena, pois além de uma interface agradável, papéis de paredes mais bacanas... por incrivel que parece o 10.04 otimizou a carga da bateria do meu notebook. Antes, no 9.04, a bateria dificilmente chegava a 100%, (sempre entre 95% e 98%), e o tempo de duração era de 1h 45min. Para minha surpresa, ontem quando usei pela primeira vez o note só na bateria o marcador apareceu 2hrs e 35min. (??) Primeiro não acreditei, pensei ser um bug do ubuntu, mas pra minha surpresa fiquei brincando com aqueles joguinhos de cálculos, lógicas etc por mais de 2hrs na boa... achei incrível... Pra mim foi surpreendente. Além de terem melhorado demais a interface gráfica dele, está tudo mto mais rápido no meu PC. O tempo de boot foi reduzido drásticamente, não demora nada, mau consigo ver a tela do Ubuntu hehehehe. Mandaram mto bem nessa versão. To impressionado com o desempenho que conseguiram colocar no sistema. Aliás, o meu problema com modens da Vivo tbm foi resolvido, na 9.10 eu passava um sufoco com isso e agora ta tudo automático. Estão conseguindo se superar cada dia mais. Eu uso um Dell Optiplex 320, Dual Core 1.6 Ghz com 1,5 Gb RAM (ou seja, não é lá um maquinão), a galera pira qdo me ver usando os recursos gráficos, os desktops múltiplos e como dá pra eu fazer nele tudo o que eles fazem no Windows e como tenho coisas que eles nao tem... hehehe Nota 1000 pra todos q ajudam o Ubuntu a melhorar assim! Caso consiga, vc está sim na rede com o pc dele e vai ver as pastas que estiverem compartilhadas. Caso não, vc vai precisar verificar no pc dele as opções de compartilhamento. Olá galera, meu problema ainda é fazer a conexão através do modem 3 G vivo - modelo ZTE , no ubuntu. aliais ainda não consegui conectar de nenhum modo, porque também fui a uma zona de internet livre e ele também não conectou. heheheh, o troço é brabo do lado da plataforma GNU. Mas sou teimoso e enquanto não se esgotarem nenhuma das possibilidades não retornarei para Microsoft. Ainda acalento o sonho de resolver todos os meus assuntos em TIC usando o Linux. No synaptic (menu SIstema, Administração) procure por 'linux-image' e 'linux-headers' e remova as imagens do kernel que não utiliza mais. Para evitar edições no grub, vá no Synaptic e busque os pacotes linux-image e linux-headers, verifique as versões anteriores à que está usando e as remova (cuidado para não remover a atual), aplique. Em seguida, pelo terminal, atualize o grub com: sudo grub-update. Para evitar edições no grub, vá no Synaptic e busque os pacotes linux-image e linux-headers, verifique as versões anteriores à que está usando e as remova (cuidado para não remover a atual), aplique. Em seguida, pelo terminal, atualize o grub com: sudo grub-update. Reinicie e seu grub estará limpinho. Não precisa utilizar o grub-update após remover imagens de kernel. Olha, Eu acesso Servidores Win2008 usando o Ubuntu 10.04 e portanto voce tambem deveria. Seu problema aí provavelmente é com o Windows7 que em determinadas configurações só aceita conexões préviamente estabelecidas. Numa rede com AD, apenas máquinas com nivel de confiança acendem ao Windows, neste caso se eu quero conectar um Linux tenho que rebaixar o nivel de segurança do Windows. No seu caso talvez seja a mesma coisa, mas terá de descobrir como, eu tenho o Win7 mas só usei ele uma vez e se não me engano quando se cria um compartilhamento nele, ele cria um mecanismo com senha que não é do compartilhamento para você agregar tal computador a sua rede criando uma homegroup, máquinas que não estejam no mesmo homegroup ( workgroup) não acendem ao compartilhamento. Enfim, acho que seu problema está mais com o Windows, em como agregar o seu Linux a homegroup. Sugestão 2 - Desinstale o programinha infame, instale o modem através do usb-modeswitch (quando vc me passar o modelo do seu modem te mostro como fazer). O problema é que o programinha infame não vai aparecer na lista do Synaptic porque ele não segue uma instalação padrão. Resultado: para remover vai ter de ser no braço. Ele instala seus arquivos nos lugares mais inusitados no disco. Sugestão 3 - Reclame com o suporte da Vivo (tá, não precisa me mandar pra aquele lugar...) Abraço. [Ubuntu-BR] Positivo z80, resolução 800x600 ?
Pessoal, usava o ubuntu 9.10, num notebook positivo Z80. Estava tudo indo bem, com alguns probleminhas na placa de som mas nada grave. até aí, blz. Então inventei de instalar o 10.04, ... Ah! o 10.04... O monitor teimava em ficar com a resolução máxima de 800X600 e nao teve cristão que conseguisse mudar isso. Tentei algumas configuraçõe do Xorg.conf, alguns programas para configuração de hardware, e mesmo assim o monitor nao é identificado. Fiz tudo que estava ao meu alcance, devido ao poco conhecimento que tenho com o Linux. Busquei em fóruns, procurei dicas mas nda. Resultado, tive que voltar ao 9.10. e agora a resolução máxima continua 800x600. ja pensei em largar de mão o linux, mas nao quero fazer isso, o considero o melhor S.O. Alguém pode me dar uma dica...não consigo instalar os programas do Imposto de renda no Ubuntu 10.04. Procurando por 'firefox inicia em modo offline' no Google, encontrei isso: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=800179 que resolve o problema assim: Open the terminal (Apllication--accesories---terminal) and type gksudo gedit /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf. Then you replace the allow send_interface=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager/ with deny send_interface=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager/ (there are three it the text). Then save the changes and reboot. This will not permit firefox (or pidgin) to communicate with network manager and the state will be always online in firefox... Traduzindo: - Abra o terminal (Aplicações -- Acessórios -- Terminal) - Digite 'sudo gedit /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf'. - Procure a linha allow send_interface=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager (tem três delas no texto) - Substitua todas por deny send_interface=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager - Salve as modificações e feche o Gedit - Reinicie a máquina - Isso vai fazer com que o Firefox ignore o NetworkManager. Prós: Você vai navegar pela Internet 3G Contras: Você pode parar de navegar pela rede wireless ou pela rede cabeada (tem de testar isso). Tente e nos avise do resultado. [Ubuntu-BR] Criar lançador de app via Wine com r ecurso iniciar em igual ao Atalho no Windows
Pessoal, tenho uma aplicação for Windows que executo via Wine, para ela criei o seguinte lançador: wine /home/user/.wine/drive_c/AppInstal/exec.exe '\\servidor\pasta\app.exe' senha/usuario Funciona quase que 100%, pois no atalho do Windows dessa aplicação utilizamos o recurso Iniciar em (exemplo: '\\servidor\pasta\') e no lançador do Linux não encontrei essa opção. No forum do ubuntu, disseram-me que tinha que editar o arquivo /etc/resolv.conf , da seguinte forma: acrescentar as linhas nameserver 208.67.222.222 nameserver 8.8.8.8 e apagar as outras As linhas do /etc/resolv.conf são irrelevantes porque quando o modem conecta, ele reescreve o /etc/resolv.conf com as informações da rede da Vivo. Você pode verificar isso quando se conectar. Portanto, você pode até mudar mas, na próxima vez em que conectar, as mudanças são apagadas. Existem pastas compartilhadas e visiveis nada rede no windows? -- Marcelo Silvamarc...@ig.com.br sim Sim Fred...para windows x windows (ambos 7), a rede funciona ok, claro, dando permissão em ambas as máquinas, em redes domésticas...Mesmo após dar permissão e elas se enxergarem, quando coloco o ubuntu, o mesmo é ceguinho, hehehehe, não vê nada...detalhe, minha rede é sem fio (router dlink d524)...
