We've generated suggestions and we're currently reviewing them. We have quite a backlog to process though, and the translations are a bit technical for some of the contributors. Also, the USG is always a thin rope between keeping the terms in English and translating them in French. Ubiquity descriptions for Ubuntu and derivatives should be updated by this date (breaking most of the LP translations with only changing 13.04 with 13.10, so the offline translation memory rules at least in this case ;) ), but who knows... October 10th - LanguagePack Translation Deadline, 13.10 translation becomes some kind of sport, nothing more. I'm rather busy next week, but what we can do is resume meetings every two weeks to see if we have anything outstanding. On the French side, we're ok, making progress and tackling the announced ubuntu-touch templates without issues. My worry is that I'm not sure they're listed in the main Ubuntu list, and that some teams might not have noticed it. My other worry is about documentation, which is going to fall on us at some point (no idea when). If you're referring to the DDTP, we're filing a bug for every typo we see, with package name, the string with the typo and the string as it should be. A quick DDTP update
Good news Michael has fixed the issue that prevented DDTP translations from being displayed in the Application Lens, meaning more visibility for all your hard work. This will definitely land soon in Saucy, and maybe in Raring if an URE is granted. In addition to that, he went the extra mile and did a new refresh of the DDTP template (obviously not as dramatic as the previous one) and prepared the ground for the Saucy version of the DDTP (which will be 99% similar to the Raring one). We're also investigating a way to push translations more often (using automation), but it is a complex matter. Finally, thanks to the UDS work, we're beginning to look into putting a way to contribute easily to the DDTP translations into the Software Centre/Synaptic/Application lens. I've noticed a couple of expired questions that went unsolved or unanswered. If it is a bug, can you check if the bug exists (and if not create it - and if yes, link it in the question), and then mark the question as answered. That's exactly what I had in mind. the stable refreshes, which have been a recurring topic for translators, as we get bug reports, and we end up saying that they'll be solved when and if there's an update. But the reality shows that Canonical does not have any strategy in localization and prefer to leave it as is (updates released only when anyone finds someone who can do it, without any schedule). I've created a separate blueprint for the non-technical stuff (see the first mail of the thread for details on the technical stuff). But we agreed that this non-techy kind of stuff could be easily solved in weekly team meetings, and doesn't require a session at UDS. My feeling is that we need to have a website in line with the current Ubuntu web theme, where we can centralize the static part of this content, as well as our tools (Nightmonkey, Translation Statistics, LangPack Statistics…) 4. I copied Danilo because my understanding is that, as he designed LP Translations, he has a clear view of what it would take to fix it, and could give with a quick 15 min QA the community hints about the time needed, the paths and directions to take. 5. For the Language Pack, it's exactly the input that I was looking for. Although he will probably not be able to implement it, I'd be grateful if Martin could give us pointers (30 to 60 min) of what we need to do for fully automating the full rebuild and enabling tests. 6. Then if a dev does manage to solve the problem or add the functionality or whatever then the Freedom Sponsors people collect the money from all the promises and pays the devs. Where it gets a bit hazy for me is that PayPal may charge a fee on top of that and Freedom Sponsors charge 3% on top too, in order to try to cover administration costs. Both things are allowed under GPL licenses but i know some people will object to paying anything for anything mistakenly thinking that Free (as in freedom) has to be free (as in beer). A lot of people do or have done a lot for free and it wrankles a bit to be asked to pay. On the other hand i got shed loads back just by being involved, back when i was quite into helping people on the Launchpad Answers. I have just found out that GSOC closed it's doors last week but there is always next year. I think LibreOffice got couple of projects in before the doors closed so hopefully the work will be done on them over the summer. Does anyone know of other such projects? Thus the stats are frozen at that point in time, which is the main reason why I took the web app down. In order to get exports back up and running I submitted a merge proposal to include it in Launchpad [2], but it still needs some extra work (mainly a database patch to unblock it). I was doing this on my spare time, and unfortunately since then I've not had the chance to look at it. If someone would step up and give a hand with that, that'd be awesome, as from the feedback I got, translators were finding those stats useful, and once that data would be on the webapp, that'd open a world of possibilities [3]. Marketing Package Descriptions to potential translators
Hi, We started a new campaign a week ago in the French community to encourage broad participation in the translation of package descriptions. Given the fact that it's a huge task, that we have automated suggestions for French, and the insight that people usually have a couple of packages they love, we've targeted them on thematic issues (GNOME, KDE, XFCE, LXDE, Games, Education…) by creating links to Nightmonkey (and before that thematic lists of links to translate) which cater to their interests. We also encouraged people to translate the ONE package they love http://traduire.ubuntu-fr.org/node/14 Our insight is that the DDTP is a long tail problem which can be solved both by short tail solution (translating popular packages) and long tail solution (asking for community help) I've translated the blog post in English if you're interested in a similar approach. Nightmonkey is back into action !
The rumors are true... Nightmonkey is back into action, thanks to the resolution of a long standing Launchpad bug that broke it in the first place. Solving that bug enabled the Offline Nightmonkey tool you saw before, but I'm very glad to tell you that István reenabled today deep-linking in the actual online Nightmonkey, effectively bypassing the infamous timeout bug :-) In simple terms, this means we'll now be able to translate the Package Descriptions by popularity (both popcon and ratings), by keyword (science, biology, GNOME, KDE, Ubuntu…), by repository (main, multiverse, universe…) and by status (translated/non translated). The translated/untranslated status is updated daily at 08:00 - CET. Nightmonkey is available for/in many languages and will enable us to globally reach casual translators and communities around specific packages or themes. Priority of several Ubuntu-specific packages for Raring
Can the person with sufficient rights raise the priority of those packages which are listed on the very last page, while they're Ubuntu specific ? unity-lens-friends, kubuntu-patched-l10n, desktop-kubuntu-web-shortcuts, desktop-kubuntu-notification-helper. It would also be cool to bring the Kubuntu translation packages up as well. If you've spotted other packages that are Ubuntu-specific as well, and not properly ranked, please report them as well. Offline Nightmonkey - Version 0.9
Hi all, following feedback on the spreadsheet to search in the DDTP, I've turned it into a tool. It's a rather heavy file (17 MB for ODS, 30MB for XLS) called Offline Nightmonkey, as a tribute to the original Nightmonkey (which is being reworked to bypass the Launchpad timeout bug). The new features are: - added language selection (you select your language and the url are customized on the fly) - added data tabs for easy update (you copy paste a dump from poedit in the hidden tabs and everything updates automagically) - consolidated main, multiverse and universe Due to weird corruption and performance issues, there's a LibreOffice copy and Excel copy. Choose whichever is faster on your LibreOffice install. I'm fine with the sorting, as it's the best way to get visible stuff done quickly, as long as it doesn't break the spreadsheet approach (and indeed there's no reason it should break it). The reason I'm keen on search is to go for low hanging fruits and thematic languages (my idea is to get people on board on various topics such as science, programming, servers.. and enable them to translate packages they care about) What I've seen in the recent updates is that there are a lot of bytesize fixes for strings we already translated, or strings that are quite similar, and we must not loose the work done on those ones. Finally, we're going to use the Google Translator Kit approach once more this week-end (http://lite.framapad.org/p/ddtpUbuntu) and I suggest everybody gives it a go. I remember the bad results obtained for German, but my point is that with massives manual fixes to the automated suggestions, you quickly get to a very decent level (It has worked well for French, and my guess is that it should work well for « major » languages such as Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch... The branch I linked to actually sorts the translations in the .po file themselves based on popcon. Currently, they are sorted in some arbitrary order, I believe alphabetically on package name. By sorting the .po file itself to put the most popular packages first, translators don't need to be able to search in the template, because the most important packages are already at the top of the po file. It took quite some work to get my popsort program to work, so I'd really like it to be used to sort the package descriptions. I believe sorting based on popcon would not even interfere with the spreadsheet approach for searching. While doing that, we could do the same for previous releases (quantal, precise and oneiric). I've actually tried a similar approach for Dutch using msgmerge, which might also be worth checking out. When you merge the translations of an older version of ubuntu into the current version (msgmerge quantal_ddtp.po raring_ddtp.po -o merged_ddtp.po, for example), there will be a lot of 'fuzzy' translations for strings that are similar (for example, meta packages for different programs, debugging symbols etc). These fuzzy often only need a few small changes (eg program name) to be accepted, which can really speed up translations. And you don't have to worry about google putting in a weird translation, since it is all based on earlier translations done by a human. Also, stretch goal would be to add strings that are similar in Raring (Transitional Packages and such) as suggestions. This would be for all languages, and not just French and Dutch. We've bypassed the search problem in Launchpad by using a LibreOffice spreadsheet. Here's what we've done for the DDTP (Universe). It's enabled by a recent bugfix in Launchpad Po export. We'll thus have a full export of the po file in order, and we'll be able to map it to individual static URLs in a spreadsheet. Sorting it by POPCON would require us to make a similar list sorted by POPCON. @all As Launchpad doesn't have fuzzy support, we need to create a mock project with the translations which were slightly modified with that refresh so that they show up as suggestions. While doing that, we could do the same for previous releases (quantal, precise and oneiric). I've actually tried a similar approach for Dutch using msgmerge, which might also be worth checking out. When you merge the translations of an older version of ubuntu into the current version (msgmerge quantal_ddtp.po raring_ddtp.po -o merged_ddtp.po, for example), there will be a lot of 'fuzzy' translations for strings that are similar (for example, meta packages for different programs, debugging symbols etc). These fuzzy often only need a few small changes (eg program name) to be accepted, which can really speed up translations. And you don't have to worry about google putting in a weird translation, since it is all based on earlier translations done by a human. Also, stretch goal would be to add strings that are similar in Raring (Transitional Packages and such) as suggestions. This would be for all languages, and not just French and Dutch. Hey, We had the same problem initially for French. As noted on the pad, we went through mass refactoring using Regular Expressions and such, and we're a throusand strings away now :-P Seriously: a lot of us were skeptical, but with some cleanup (you'll quickly find patterns when it comes to mistakes), it will prove useful. For the rest, you'll have snippets in German that you'll be able to reuse. Out of curiosity, could you share part of the result so far ? If you can read French, there's a list of common mistakes we corrected ( http://lite.framapad.org/p/ddtpUbuntu). As we spotted more common mistakes, we reuploaded the file in the bogus project after quick find and replace all. We keep making incredible progress thanks to the process: we validated on average 400 strings a day going from 49289 untranslated strings on Dec 16th to 42746 today. I've updated the structure and the instructions on the Pad to be more detailed and more linear. Tool to generate translation priorities page for Raring
Just wanted to remind everybody of this handy tool made by Rachid for the NL team to generate a list of untranslated packages for your translations wikis: it will remove already translated packages and keep only the untranslated ones in Wiki Syntax for MoinMoin. You'll have for each package untranslated count, suggestion count and a direct link to translations. On a related note, if any of you work on ddtp-translations offline, I have written a python program that can sort entries in ddtp po-files based on the popularity of the package. This way, the most popular packages will be at the top of the po file, and you are always sure you are working on the most important packages first. When you merge the translations of an older version of ubuntu into the current version (msgmerge quantal_ddtp.po raring_ddtp.po -o merged_ddtp.po, for example), there will be a lot of 'fuzzy' translations for strings that are similar (for example, meta packages for different programs, debugging symbols etc). These fuzzy often only need a few small changes (eg program name) to be accepted, which can really speed up translations. And you don't have to worry about google putting in a weird translation, since it is all based on earlier translations done by a human. On a related note, if any of you work on ddtp-translations offline, I have written a python program that can sort entries in ddtp po-files based on the popularity of the package. This way, the most popular packages will be at the top of the po file, and you are always sure you are working on the most important packages first. You can get the code here: bzr branch lp:~redmar/+junk/ddtp_popsort It has a small readme file, please let me know if something is unclear or not working for you. Hi Hannie, Hi Redmar, Thanks a lot for the tips: we're interested in using your approach, and more generally it might be interesting expending the msmerge approach to all teams that are already underway for the DDTP, and the Google one to the teams that need to get started. - For the Google Translator Kit approach, I guess we could extend the mock project we did for fr_FR to other languages (and streamlining our process by using Bazaar) by creating a global team responsible for the DDTP Mock project and including in this team one member from each language team responsible for uploading the machine translated po for his or her language. - For the msmerge approach, do you already have a project to handle this ? Is there any advantage in msmerging raring against releases older than quantal to get more modified strings ? How many strings have you been able to recover using that approach ? It might be neat to generate the msmerged po for all languages ? Importing them as actual translations (not fuzzy) into a mock project like the Google Translate one would show them as suggestions for the actual DDTP as well. The translator would thus be able to pick the human translated one when available or to build on the machine translated one otherwise. Can we try to schedule some time to coordinate on this so that we can use both approaches and try to onboard all the other languages teams once we have a rock-solid process ? Hi, I don't quite get why ubuntu-docs translations is not synced and consistant either with LP ubuntu-docs nor with gnome-user-docs. If we take French as an example: - Upstream GNOME is 97% finished ( http://l10n.gnome.org/vertimus/gnome-user-docs/master/gnome-help/fr) - The package in Quantal is said to be 100% finished ( https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/quantal/+source/ubuntu-docs) - The Launchpad Ubuntu Docs project (that is supposedly linked with the former) is 86% finished ( https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu-docs/quantal) I've found the beginning of an explanation at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-docs/+bug/970890 but it's still not completely clear to me. When will GNOME and KDE upstream translations be imported ?
Hi, I was wondering when will GNOME and KDE upstream translations be imported. For the time being, new translators are making loads of translation suggestion on KDE and GNOME specific languages, in a waste of time. We thought that seeing completed translations could drive them on Ubuntu-specific packages.
