Sorry to side-step for now(I personally do not use LivePatch) - take a look
at some of the links thrown up by this google search.

Even if they don't help, at least you will have found some other resources
for help.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Samsung M2070 cups problem

2018-12-31 Thread David Goldsbrough
Michael - it is standard practice for you to respond to the list not direct
to your responder.
The reason for this is so others can follow the thread and perhaps learn
and/or contribute.

In what follows I have assumed your printer is connected direct to your
ubuntu device or across wifi. If your printer is connected direct to your
router then there could be router issues.

First, let us determine that your system is up to date. Inside a terminal
issue the command sudo apt update followed by sudo apt upgrade. Those 2
commands will bring us to the latest state.
Next establish whether cups is installed.
Best way is to issue this command inside a terminal session
sudo apt install cups

Your system will either respond "cups is already the newest version."
or it will say it is not installed or not at the newest version

If it is not installed then issue the command sudo apt install cups. If
you install cups - best to shutdown system and reboot. Try printing after
reboot.

If cups is installed then issue these commands

sudo apt-get install cups --reinstall
sudo service cups restart

Then try printing again.

If none of the above works establish whether you have a
/atc/cups/cupsd.conf file
and if not issue these commands
sudo cp /usr/share/cups/cupsd.conf.default /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
sudo service cups restart

Hope that helps.

It is possible the lack of an answer could be due to nobody knowing. I
guess the printer is quire a newish model? The link below does not seem to
have anyLinux printing drivers but does have the scanner drivers. Maybe
Kyocera support can help?

Many thanks Jim. I had forgotten I had raised that bug. I must have done
other things also but just cannot find them!
However, I just need to test this out which matches my recollection of
doing things from the command line:-

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface cursor-size 72

72 is the max I can get I think - and 24 is the default

[ubuntu-uk] Searching for messages - the archives

2018-04-17 Thread David Goldsbrough
My memory is not what it was!
I have a vague recollection that I may have posted sometime in the past
about mouse pointer cursors sizes with a solution that worked for me to get
a larger size.
It looks as if I am going to have to do a Ubuntu re-install and whilst I
can ensure my $HOME is backed up - I am fairly certain my mouse pointer
large size was changed somewhere outside of $HOME but for the life of me I
can't remember where and my attempts to find it have failed. I simply want
to be able to have my same cursor size when I re-install ( I have very low
vision )
The archives do not lend themselves to searching the whole lists by subject
or author - I can't even recall which year it was! Anyone help or give me
a few hints.

(BTW only my solution ever worked - all the others mentioned around the net
never worked - my solution was an updated one from a previous ubuntu
version - mine is 16.04 LTS)

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Real Ale Train this weekend

2017-11-01 Thread David Chatterton
If you are thinking of having food before the RAT, bear in mind that a good
choice of hot food is available on the RAT from the Buffet Car at reasonable
prices. Soft drinks, wine and spirits are also available. Real Ale is still £2
per pint and RAT glass tankards are available at £5 each.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Real ale Train poll closed

Hello All,

I shall probably be on bar duty on the RAT myself on 4 November. On behalf of
the Watercress Line Bar Staff, we shall be pleased to welcome you onboard with
real ale at just £2 a pint and RAT pint glasses to take away at £5 each. Hot
food and snacks, wine and spirits are also available from the buffet car. Make
sure that you are all wearing your Ubuntu T shirts so that we can look out for
you and ensure that you enjoy a memorable evening.

Looking forward to your visit.

I hope for one of two things at least:

   - some group of people will step forward and fork Unity as a Desktop
   Environment for use on desktop/laptops/notebooks
   - that GNOME is as easy to configure for Low Vision users as Unity
(large icons, large font, colours, etc)

Re: [ubuntu-uk] scanning problems 16.04

2016-10-12 Thread David Goldsbrough
I researched my own answer and whilst I do not fully understand "why" the
following resolved my problems,

At the time of writing this, these 3 packages need to be downloaded and
installed.

libsane-common_1.0.26~git20151121-1_all.deb
libsane_1.0.26~git20151121-1_amd64.deb
libjpeg62-turbo_1.5.1-1_amd64.deb

The first two packages can be found in the Debian experimental libs at this
link https://packages.debian.org/experimental/libs/

The last package I found in this link https://packages.debian.org/
sid/libjpeg62-turbo

In some cases you may need to navigate to an ftp mirror site to actually
download. Once downloaded, simply install each package as root i.e.

sudo dpkg -i *package*

I have tested with simple-scan, xsane, and scangearmp and all works fine.

[ubuntu-uk] scanning problems 16.04

2016-10-08 Thread David Goldsbrough
Brief description of problem:-

Unable to use “simple scan” or “xsane” to scan documents from Ubuntu 16.04
LTS

Hardware:-

3 devices:-

A. Lenovo T60 laptop running 14.04 LTS 32 bit fully updated

B Lenovo T410 laptop running 16.04 LTS 64 bit brand new install

C Mesh desktop running 16.04 LTS 32 bit – upgraded from 14.04 LTS

Multi-function inkjet Canon MG5300 connected wirelsessly through router.

The problem only occurs on the last 2 machines. Scanning works perfectly
well on the 1st machine.

Running simple-scan from command line with debug option on device B
produces this:-

simple-scan -d

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu Phone web browser broken

2016-08-31 Thread David King
I am still having a problem with my Ubuntu Phone, lots of it not working
now. No web browser, no text messaging, no Network Indicator and thus no
phone connection, no wifi connection and sometimes keyboard not working
when trying to type.

If I reset the phone, and lose all my data, would everything work again?

And how would I back up my data. This page has some info, but not sure
how to implement it:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/602850/how-do-i-backup-my-ubuntu-phone

Backing up /home/phablet will backup everything except the apps
which are in a number of places including /opt/click.ubuntu.com/ and
   /usr/share/click/preinstalled.

How would I go about backing up these places? If I connect the phone to
my Ubuntu PC, these places are not all visible to the PC.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] ubuntu 16.04 fsck and display issue (SOLVED)

2016-08-12 Thread David Goldsbrough
Finally fixed the problem - not 100% but I'm now happy!

First of all including nomodeset in my grub config file had no effect
whatsoever - perhaps this is just one of the examples that defies the usual
fix. Remember my machine is a desktop with proprietary drivers(installed
during the upgrade) for a NVIDEA card

So I fixed it like this - taking all
http://askubuntu.com/questions/362722/how-to-fix-plymouth-splash-screen-in-all-ubuntu-releases/
the usual precautions to ensure I had a reversion path back should things
go wrong. I will not pretend that I knew everything I was doing, but took
things on trust as I say ensuring I could revert back.

I used these 2 links as my inspiration:-

http://askubuntu.com/questions/362722/how-to-fix-plymouth-splash-screen-in-all-ubuntu-releases/

http://askubuntu.com/questions/6033/enabling-nvidia-driver-messes-up-splash-screen

>From within a terminal screen:-

1. sudo apt-get install v86d
2. sudo vi /etc/default/grub (I am a vi man but other editors could be
used)
3. Added the following 2 lines in the appropriate place in the file -
commenting out any conflicting lines and of course saving the file
  GRUB_GFXMODE=800x600x32
  GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep
4. At the terminal prompt I then typed the following

 echo FRAMEBUFFER=y | sudo tee /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash
sudo update-initramfs -u
sudo update-grub
5. Exit the terminal screen, Shutdown and Reboot

Comment:-
There are ways of finding out the screen resolution capabilities of the
NVIDEA graphics card and I wanted 800x600x32 because of my low vision.
Read the second link above - but do not use hwinfo or install it - find out
the video capabilities inside a grub command session.

Added Bonus:-
This fix also fixed the fsck echo also - so that is no longer displayed
even though I suspect it still runs.

Remaining problems:-
Ubuntu logo is displayed on startup but after it disappears the flashing
dots remain for a while. No Ubuntu logo appears on shutdown. All well
known problems, but a fix for these will go on the backburner.

Thanks for your interest.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] ubuntu 16.04 fsck and display issue

2016-08-11 Thread David Goldsbrough
Many thanks for the links provided regarding how to temp change the grub
config file at boot and indeed permanently. Still the same though, no
splash screen on boot, although I have not attempted to change the
/etc/default/grub file. However, I did notice in there it said splash
quiet as opposed to quiet splash - which I did edit in the bootup along
with adding nomodeset - all to no effect.

I have researched further and last night even started the plymouth daemon
manually and managed to display the splash screen, so if it works manually
it should work auto also.

I am currently working on this
http://askubuntu.com/questions/362722/how-to-fix-plymouth-splash-screen-in-all-ubuntu-releases/

but before continuing I would welcome specifically some comment on the lines

echo FRAMEBUFFER=y | sudo tee /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash
sudo update-initramfs -u

I guess the first line creates that splash file as I don't have one
currently. The second line I guess invokes an up date which without
would render the first line a waste of time. The third line is there to
update grub as a result of previous changes mentioned in the link to
/etc/default/grub.

I thought it might be best if I appended my grub file so here is without
all the usual commented lines.

GRUB_DEFAULT=0

GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash quiet"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=None

As always help and comments most welcome.

Undaunted I researched further.
I thought this thread looked promising

https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2321997

and I checked a few things out but I suspect it was written before 16.04.1
and .1 has corrected the bugs in part. I noticed late it was for lubuntu
but guessed ubuntu was the same.

I am reading this at the moment
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Plymouth
but again notice it predates 16.04

I have not ruled out it is something to do with my graphics card nvidea but
the upgrade appears to have installed the latest driver.

If I understand things correctly the boot sequence goes something like
this:-
GRUB opens the kernal using certain parameters. The kernal(s) have been
pre-compiled during kernal updates and compilation includes ref to display
drivers so the screen post GRUB works. If this limited understanding is
true, I am unclear when "plymouth" is called - prior to kernal opening I
guess. If this is true, then "plymouth" can only display splash screen in
some form of monitor default mode. But I am guessing.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to try and fix please. I'm not
sure if it is still a formally recorded bug which I just need to await a
fix for.

[ubuntu-uk] ubuntu 16.04 fsck and display issue

2016-08-09 Thread David Goldsbrough
So, I bit the bullet and upgraded from 14.04 to 16.04 on an old desktop as
a pre cursor to upgrading my Lenovo T60 laptop - my sturdy workhorse for
now. One day I will get round to buying a 64bit machine.

Any way, all went smoothly - no real problems. I was glad that the upgrade
retained all my settings especially my extra large mouse cursor as I have
Low Vision - in fact the upgrade improved matters making my large cursor
visible outside of FireFox where it only seemed to work under 14.04.

To the point, when I boot now I no longer see the "Ubuntu" message in the
centre of the screen with the changing coloured dots underneath. No big
issue, but it was one of those reassuring things when booting up. I can
live without it, but should it be doing this? Do I need to tweak something
to re-instate it?

Maybe connected, I don't know, but on boot I see the remains I guess of an
fsck output flash up a few times. It says something like
 /dev/sda5: clean, x/xxx files, xx/
and then it proceeds to boot. Doesn't take long - hence the reason why
cannot see the exact numbers and jot down quickly enough. Again, I guess
its no big issue - the time to worry maybe would be if the output was
different. Again, do I need to do something to prevent this? (/dev/sda5
is the boot partition for ubuntu - Vista is on 2 other partitions and I
think sda3 and sda4 are allocated to two DVD drives in the machine)

Many thanks for reading and any responses you make.

Where I work, it is Windows 7 throughout, although running from remote
servers.

The actual computers we log on from mostly run Windows 7, but a few of
the newer ones which have replaced older ones are running Ubuntu. So
some people use Ubuntu to log into Windows.

I thought I should update readers on this saga and thank people for their

All is now solved. I now have my 120GB drive in full use.
I ran the following commands and show the output.

sudo pvresize /dev/sda5

Physical volume "/dev/sda5" changed

1 physical volume(s) resized / 0 physical volume(s) not resized

$ sudo lvresize --resizefs --extents +100%FREE /dev/ubuntu-vg/root

Extending logical volume root to 109.55 GiB

Logical volume root successfully resized

resize2fs 1.42.9 (4-Feb-2014)

Filesystem at /dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-root is mounted on /; on-line resizing
required

old_desc_blocks = 4, new_desc_blocks = 7

The filesystem on /dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-root is now 28719104 blocks long.

Thanks Daniel.
 I have tried sudo lvextend -l+100%FREE /dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-root (I
think we did try this before).
I received the following output:-
New size (13736 extents matches existing size (13736 extents) Run 'lvexted
--help' for more information. I did do this but it still left me clueless!
I thought it best not to submit your second command until reporting back.
Outputs from fdisk -l, pvdisplay and parted -l remain as previously
reported.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Partitioning

2016-02-09 Thread David Goldsbrough
I am going to spare you Daniel all the details and other readers of this
post.
Briefly I had documented everything and that is now lost for reasons I can
only guess. I had chosen your Option 2 without success and then Option 1
with I hope is success. I did though suffer errors on re-boot and so
attempted another re-boot - this time it reported fsck issues which I
answered F to and all seemed fine.
I then rebooted from the 60GB USB drive to grab the documentation and
started up Firefox to get at my Google drve. Firefox started as if this
was the first time it had ever started - weird and accessing the google
drive and trying to find my documentation file - it was not there! Odd!

So I reboted into my 120GB and again Firefox starts as if brand new -
bookmarks and history have gone. Cpuld dd have done that?

But forget that I think I now have a full 120GB system but am starting to
have some doubts over some of the files. What command should I run to give
me confidence I have a full 120GB?
Thanks
DaveG

Re: [ubuntu-uk] partitioning

2016-02-07 Thread David Goldsbrough
Many thanks for your responses. I only get the daily digest of ubuntu-uk
so forgive me if there have been some responses that cross in the mail.
Since my original post I have been doing more research. TBH I cannot
recall ticking the LVM option when doing the original install some years
ago.

I followed Jim Price link
<
http://www.howtogeek.com/211937/how-to-use-lvm-on-ubuntu-for-easy-partition-resizing-and-snapshots/

I installed the LVM GUI and to be frank it leaves me just as confused as

I even researched some of the command line things for LVM - just as
confusing. Some outputs of some commands though may be useful here:-

As yet I have done no more and thought it best to post back these outputs
first.
Does the plan of removing the secondary partition and the extended
partition inside still good? How exactly do I do that - with a Gparted
livecd? Or a Ubuntu livecd?
Do i use a Gparted liveCD to resize afterwards? Or can I use the LVM GUI?

In /dev notation exactly what is the secondary partition and extended
partition?
My understanding, which I accept is likely to be wrong, is that I must keep
and not mess with /dev/sda1 - that is where my MBR and GRUB sits; .dev/sda2
and /dev/sda5 is just confusing me no end. I guess /dev/sda2 is what is
holding all my original stuff from the 60GB disc I cloned so it does not
make sense to me to delete it?

And you guessed right Liam - I do not run in my bare feet! ;)

As always I appreciate your help.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Partitioning

2016-02-07 Thread David Goldsbrough
Well something happened if not what was desired! But no twisted knickers!

I booted from a Ubuntu liveCD and then CTRL-ALT-F1 to get to command prompt
and ran all commands as sudo.

I scribbled down outputs following many steps/commands you gave but forgive
me if I cannot fully transcribe to here - my eyesight is so poor.
STEP 1
No outputs from 1 to 3 written down but all seemed within order (question
though - should I have been typing "5" rather than "3" as per your
instruction?) At 4. when pressing "w" the following outputs were given:-
The partition table has been changed.
Calling ioctl() to re-read partition table.
WARNING: Re-reading the partition table failed with error 16: Device or
resource busy.
The kernal still uses the old table.
The new table will be used at the next re-boot or after you run
partprobe(8) or kpartx(8)
Syncing disks.

After step 2 the following was displayed:-
Physical Volume "/dev/sda5" changed
1 physical volume(s) resized/0 physical volume(s) not resized

After step 3 the following was displayed:-
New size (13736 extents) matches existing size (137?6 extents)

After step 4 the following was displayed:-
The file system is 14065664 blocks long or nothing to do!

The fsck command seemed ok and just reported 387877/3522560 file
4976509/14065664 blocks

I re-booted - seemed OK - but see the following outputs of fdisk -l ,
pvdisplay and parted -l

[ubuntu-uk] partitioning

2016-02-05 Thread David Goldsbrough
Using Clonezilla I have cloned my 60GB disk to a 120GB partially
successfully..

It boots fine and all is well.

I was though a little surprised that I did not get the opportunity to fully
utilise the disk and it looks as if there is 60GB unallocated.

I have never been very good with Gparted but I booted up a live CD of it
and did what I thought would correct the issue but it would seem without
effect and I fear I may have mucked things up.

I need to explain that my eyesight has rapidly declined in the last year
but thankfully not to the point of registered partially sighted. My system
is highly configured Ubuntu 14.04 LTS to suit my vision – I have tried
other distros but configuring Ubuntu was always my best option but I
digress.

Gparted is showing the following:-

/dev/sda 111.79 GiB

Partition

/dev/sda1 ext2 Size 243miB Used 130.46 MiB Unused 112.54 MiB Flag boot

/dev/sda2 extended Size 111.55 GiB

/dev/sda5 lvm2 Size 55.65 GiB Flags lvm

unallocated unallocated Size 55.9 GiB

There is a yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark in it next to lvm2

What can I do now to make full use of my disk?

Very grateful for your responses.

[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu phone problems

2015-12-02 Thread David King
Since the latest system update a few days ago, has anyone else
experienced some problems?

Cannot connect to my Ubuntu PC on USB any more, PC does not recognise
phone being there, although it did previously.
Cannot read some emails in Dekko, they just appear blank, but were okay
before.
When clicking a link to a website from a webapp and the kind of web
browser lite window appears, it keeps reloading itself (problem since
last two updates).
Some apps seem less stable in general and more likely to crash,
including web browser and Podbird.

I now run a lenovo T60 running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS which I bought for around
£100 from Morgan compurers - a refurbished model. It was easy to install

technology needs that I need now and may need in the future.

Although they look like great laptops, and just what I am looking for at
present, Ebuyer no longer stock them.

My partner has a Dell Inspiron which is a few years old now, it came
preinstalled with Ubuntu, and today it will not boot. Might be just the
battery or the PSU, but if the whole laptop is dead, then she needs a
new one, so I am looking for a new laptop. The idea is to buy one with
Ubuntu pre-installed, or another Linux OS, as then we are certain that
the correct hardware drivers will be available and loaded.

Does anyone have any good recommendations, looking in the £300 to £400
price range? Dell still do Ubuntu laptops but they are way more
expensive than they used to be (the Inspiron only cost £300).

[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu update warning messages

2015-10-22 Thread David Goldsbrough
I am using 14.04 LTS.
I use the "about Computer" facility to update on a regular basis or when
reminded to do so.
I always like to display what is going on if only to half understand what
is going on,
Today during the big kernal, etc updates I noticed some warning message
with a suggestion on a command line that could be wrong but it was far too
fast for me to know exactly what it said especially with my failing
eyesight.
I tried looking around the logs in /var/log but found nothing that
resembled what I recall glimpsing.
What exactly is the best way for me to find out what I have missed - I know
its just a warning rather than an error but the curiosity is bugging me.

[ubuntu-uk] . Re: Twin DVD drives not mounting

2015-09-22 Thread David Goldsbrough
Many thanks for all the contributions to date. I have learnt a great deal
from these and my further researches.

When it comes to LUG I tried to involve myself years ago but sadly I live
too far away in Wiltshire to involve myself with that one which is largely
defunct now I think and the ones nearer to me in Somerset don't seem to be
too active either. In any case I cannot drive now due to my vision
issues. I am now in my early 60s and have vast IT experience including a
former HP-UX systems administrator - quite some years ago now.

Back to the problem. I failed myself here. My initial problem was my
failing eyesight. I tried a few things in Ubuntu including screen readers,
magnifiers etc but with little satisfaction. Then I came across Vinux
distro and thought I would give it a whirl. I downloaded the ISO onto the
machine previously stated and tried to burn it to DVD ROM.

This is when I discovered the 2 drives were not working yet they were fine
in Windows. I have then spent too much time trying to fix this rather than
my original problem!

My 2 drives are physically on top of each other in the tower case. All the
time I was trying the top drive because it was easier for me to feel where
the tray button was. I assumed(wrongly) the lower one was also not
working. From the contributions here and some of my own researches I
discovered the bottom drive was in fact working ( /dev/sr1 I think ) but it
only seemed to be recognised as a CDROM drive. I then woke from the
nightmare and placed the ISO image on a USB stick and then burnt Vinux to a
DVD-R disk on my Ubuntu laptop. Mistake number 2 or 3! When I then booted
it from my Ubuntu laptop I realised it was not a live-dvd and as such could
not access a writeable file system!

The funny thing is I don't expect the distro to be much better than I have
already tried. Sadly, I have found windows much better when it comes to
making changes to mouse pointers/cursors and ones which don't only work
inside a browser. And my android tablet is much better again enabling me
to do voice to text input and using gestures. IMHO Linux has a long way to
go to catch up with android/windows when it comes to assistive features.

I wrote the above on my android tablet, then went to the offending machine
so I could extract some of my findings and paste them. I don't know what I
did yesterday but they both now appear to be working but with some odd
results. If I place a music CD in either drive the system does not
recognise it as an audio CD. Whenever I eject CD or DVD with the right
click eject command it only opens the empty top tray even though its the
bottom tray that holds the medium.
Anyway here are sone techy extracts – thanks again for some tips on how to
obtain and make of them what you will.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Twin DVD drives not mounting

2015-09-21 Thread David Goldsbrough
I have tried what some contributors have said. Just to answer some
questions and issues raised.
I am trying to get my system to recognise (mount) my twin DVD drives. My
research had led me to believe that a cure would be to place entries in
/etc/fstab but that has not worked.
I am using 14.04 LTS and I installed it from a DVD ISO image I had lying
around along with other distros. I installed it alongside my windows vista
and yes I can boot into either through GRUB.
Deleting the 2 entries I made in /etc/fstab plus the ref to the floppy disk
drive, then rebooting had no effect. Placing a pre burnt DVD drive had no
effect and syslog showed nothing as far as I could see. (My vision is
really too bad at the moment)
At this stage do you think I should be changing /proc/mount instead. I
have a vague recollection that when booting /etc/fstab is not even
consulted.
Maybe I should just give up for now until my vision improves hopefully.

[ubuntu-uk] Twin DVD drives not mounting

2015-09-20 Thread David Goldsbrough
About 2 months ago I installed Ubuntu 14.04 on a win vista machine that was
lying a little idle. One reason for this was the large screen attached to
it and my failing eyesight at the time. I now know that was a little futile
of a reason.
My eyesight deteriorated significantly afterwards to the point of having an
op to reattach my retina and I am now on the long recovery path. I have
been experimenting with all sorts of accessibility aids with little success
and lots of frustration.
I explored Ubuntu like distros aimed at those with poor eyesight. It was
then I discovered my previous installation had not recognised my twin DVD
drives as I was unable to burn the ISO image after download. Early
research suggested an edit to /etc/fstab might cure the problem so i added
two lines. See this:-

Myfstab
# etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
# device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
# that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
#
#
# / was on /dev/sda5 during installation
UUID=76577e65-1d5c-4447-8e5a-df0b3df73d0c /   ext4
errors=remount-ro 0   1
# swap was on /dev/sda6 during installation
UUID=76bf638d-db15-4c38-a1ec-659b5b5fd5dd noneswap
sw 0 0
/dev/frw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
/dev/sr0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
/dev/sr1 /media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

Now the floppy drive entry is really weird as the system does not have one!
The hard drive is a SATA drive.
If I insert USB stick the system picks it up and I can see files. The DVD
drives work OK in Win Vista . Indeed I can boot from them before GRUB and
the MBR kicks in.
Any help to fix would be most appreciated.

I've been playing with this - if I load in safe mode with no add-ons,

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Problem with one mailbox in Thunderbird

2015-09-12 Thread David King

Do you have the settings set to leave messages on the server or not?

And where is the mailbox saved for the one that keeps losing emails? You
should be certain they are set in a location that is always going to be
writeable and not going to be unavailable at any time (e.g. USB drive).

I have not had this problem, lots of email accounts, all set up for POP3
access, messages left on server until deleted.

I wonder if there is a bug in Thunderbird that causes a problem with
pop3 accounts? If the problem account is your only one using pop3,
I'd be inclined to think that might be the problem. If you are fairly
sure it is a Thunderbird problem, check out if all your other accounts
are imap. If so, ubuntu-bug thunderbird, using the terminal would be
the way to go, I imagine.

[ubuntu-uk] Getting Amazon Prime videos to work

2015-08-12 Thread David King
I am having trouble getting Amazon Prime videos to work in Ubuntu. It's
Ubuntu Studio 14.04 with XFCE desktop.

I have tried it in Firefox, Chromium, Qupzilla, Opera, Vivaldi and
Midori -- it fails in all of them, including causing Midori to crash.
However I got it to work perfectly on a friend's laptop running Linux
Mint 13.

So I tried it in Linux Mint 17 in Virtual Box but that would not work.
And then in Linux Mint 13 in Virtual Box, which did not work until I
updated Firefox and installed Flash and then it worked perfectly.

I know that some people get it working in Ubuntu (someone said they did
in a recent Ubuntu podcast, episode 21 of series 8, but did not say how)
-- so how can I get it to work in Ubuntu?

I have got it working on my Raspberry Pi running OpenELEC/Kodi, but
would be great to have it running in Ubuntu on my PC as well.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] More phone problems/observations

I fixed the USB to PC connection issue. I had tried it in Ubuntu 12.04
and Mint, both installed on the same PC, but still no luck with
accessing the phone.

Then I went back into Ubuntu 14.04, and put the phone onto a long USB
cable into the PC instead of the USB hub and now it works -- no idea why
it would not work on the hub when other devices worked okay.

Overall, I am pleased with the Ubuntu Phone -- but today I was out and
using the phone, went online a bit, took some photos, and then it ran
out of power. The battery was fully charged before I went out, so
battery is quite weak. I shall have to buy a new USB portable power
supply -- I had one before but it stopped working.

away. First time I had it, I didn't even have voicemail set up for the
new number I put on the phone. Is it a bug, or a scam, or what?

2) Wifi doesn't let me choose what to connect to. My Moto G Android
phone gives me a list of Wifi networks in my locality - mostly
secure. But there is a BT Wifi and a BT Wifi with FON which are not
secured, but have a poor signal and will always give me a Network
error as I'm not registered to use them. Every so often, my Moto G
locks onto one of these, but I can tell it to disconnect and forget
it. Now my Ubuntu phone has locked onto one of them and I cannot find
any way to get it back to my home Wifi. Even turning Wifi off in
System Settings has no effect.

3) Battery Life is poor - between a day or two at the most. My Moto G
used to be as bad, but has improved a lot with Lollipop. I notice at
least one bug has been posted about this, so I hope it will be
improved for the Ubuntu phone.

4) Closing apps I find a real pain. Perhaps someone will tell me how
to do it easily. The only way I have found is to do a really precise
slow swipe from the right edge to about 2/3rds the way across the
screen to get it to show open apps, then swipe down the one I don't
want. The swipe from the right edge has to be so precise that it take
a few goes to get it right. What I would like is for the symbol at
the top of the app window to change to X on the home page and mean
'close'. See System Settings as an example of an app where this would
work. At the moment, only the browser has a greyed out on the home
page, but just doing it for this would help due to the way may apps
'offload' to the browser.

5) I've been tapping notifications to get to what they are telling me
about and nothing has been happening. Now I find that tapping the
icon, and only the icon, works. Not very intuitive, especially for
ex-Android users. Also, swiping the notification to the right, gives
me a 'Delete' option. It's not clear if this is to delete just the
notification or the object (email, for instance) it is telling you
about. Scary!

Those are the things bugging me at the moment. More to come, maybe.

Me too, not very intuitive at all. Eventually I managed to get them

But having a star icon on a scope suggests to me that if you press it

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Dell Linux Laptops in UK?

2015-03-14 Thread David Chatterton
For what it is worth, I bought a Del XPS13 developer edition laptop with Ubuntu
12.04 pre-installed last November. At the time, I chose to deal with a member
of the sales team as my education discount did not appear to be available via
the online purchase channel.

I was invited by Ubuntu to upgrade to 14.04 (LTS) which I accepted although it
retained the Dell proprietary drivers for the Bluetooth and WiFi chip (Intel
7260). I ran the machine using a “try-before-you-buy” installation of 14.04
from a USB drive which used the Ubuntu (non-proprietary) drivers embedded in
the kernel. Since this worked fine, I did a fresh install of 14.04 which I have
since upgraded to 14.10.

This appears to work exceedingly well although there is a minor issue with it
dropping the connection to the built-in audio from time to time.

The quad i7 processor works very well especially with the FlightGear flight
simulator where the scene rendering tasks are shared amongst all the processors
(once enabled). This is evident from the System Performance app.

I am comparing its performance with that of an Apple MacBook Pro using the
Intel i7 processor. IMHO the Apple is a far better machine in all respects and
runs the free and open source software (FOSS) apps such as Firefox,

Me too, looking forward to receiving my Ubuntu Phone. Til then on an

Re: [ubuntu-uk] How old is your computer?

2015-01-06 Thread David Chatterton
Dare I say, Ubuntu / Linux is just small fry for Dell who are intimately tied
up with Microsoft. The fact that they do supply some models with Ubuntu
pre-installed is at least a ray of light in the darkness but to expect some
meaningful support is being over-optimistic. The fact that Dell just
pre-install 12.04 is significant. As soon as Ubuntu runs, it offers an upgrade
to the latest version which is Dell’s let-out. They will probably claim that
they just support 12.04.

Who remembers the video recording wars? Sony Betamax was better than VHS
whereas the Grundig 2000 system put them both in the shade. VHS had the
“software” in terms of pre-recorded tapes. Grundig soon left the game and even
Sony ended up making VHS video machines.

One lesson Dell ought to consider. If Ubuntu does not work well on Dell
laptops, I am not going to buy any more Dell computers just to run Windows. I
shall stick to my Apple Macs. My Dell XPS 13 is a neat little machine with lots
of interesting features. The last thing that I would do to it is to install a
copy of Windows on it.

That’s an interesting viewpoint. I have used Macs since ~ 1990 in a work
environment which included PCs (initially running DOS 3.3) and a Vax network. I
even introduced Windows NT Advanced Server so that the Macs (using AppleTalk)
could share files with Windows for Workgroups users.

Having tired of Windows and its incessant security upgrades and bug patches, I
decided to make the Mac my main workhorse although I do keep a copy of Windows
7 running under Bootcamp on one of my Macs for those legacy apps that need it.

Our local Arts School has gone over completely to Macs although our local Sixth
Form College is still stuck with Windows and Novell Networks. As a believer in
FOSS, I have hopes for Linux / Ubuntu as I do for the Raspberry Pi - but that
is straying outside this topic somewhat.

If so, then try http://localhost/drupal/install.php. If that doesn't

[ubuntu-uk] PC slowing down and freezing after upgrade of hardware

2014-03-07 Thread David King

I am running Ubuntu Studio 12.04 on my PC which I built myself. I
recently upgraded some of the hardware, including the CPU, RAM and
motherboard. I am using the same hard drives and the same installation
of Ubuntu Studio.

When I boot up and if I press ESC during the splash text to see what is
going on (such as when it is doing disk checks), I see a
constantly-repeated error message as follows:

[first some changing numbers] hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB
device on port 2

and the same line appears below but the first number is 5 instead of 2,
i.e. hub 5-0:1.0:

Today I am finding after logging into Ubuntu, that Firefox is working
okay and then suddenly it freezes when opening a new tab, and then the
whole PC goes very slow and is unresponsive. Pressing ALT SysRq REISUB
does nothing. Other programs were running as well, and when it happens
the RAM usage goes to maximum (8 GB installed) and the CPUs get busier
(8-core 4 GHz).

The first time it happened I had to do a hard reboot.
The second time it happened the PC was still responding, but only just.
I pressed CTRL ALT F1 to get into a console, but that was showing the
hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2 message again
repeatedly, making it impossible to log in.
Going back to the GUI via CTRL ALT F7 I then managed to close each
window and reboot.

So is the USB device error something that could be causing it to go
slow? Or is it more likely to be a problem with Firefox or one of its
extensions? Or a problem with Ubuntu Studio? I plan to upgrade the new
LTS when it comes out in April or whenever.

When everything works it works well, with the faster CPU than before it
never goes slow, normally. I can have various programs open and lots of
tabs open in Firefox and it handles it smoothly.

So how do I fix this, and get rid of that USB device error and with the
PC running normally without freezing?

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Some installation pointers please

2014-02-16 Thread David Goldsbrough
Very many thanks to all those who have contributed responses to my original
post.
Regrettably, my technical knowledge is not as up to date as it should be.
The days of being a Systems Administrator on UNIX servers in the mid-80s
serve me well occasionally at command line level, and the days of using and
administrating Windows/DOS systems from the early 80s through to the 90s
are clearly not good enough for the Machiavellian plots that Microsoft and
their hardware partners have got up to in order to frustrate the
linux/ubuntu community.

I have done some further research, especially on UEFI. The
usual frustrations apply; viz. out of date articles on the vast range of
UBUNTU sources.

The strategies which responders made were very good. Suffice to say,
regrettably I will not be trying to create a duel-boot laptop. We will be
exploring other options that satisfies the prime need of having a backup
facility should the windows laptop fail. Favourite at the moment is buying
a cheap second-hand machine where windows does not matter and we can just
put a Ubuntu only configuration together.

Once again, thank you.

[ubuntu-uk] Some installation pointers please

2014-02-14 Thread David Goldsbrough
My experience of installing Ubuntu is limited to either a full install on a
virgin hard-disk or into a Win XP environment.

I have been helping a friend recently with problems on their HP 64bit AMD
laptop regarding user profiles, corrupt registry and AVG. Long story,
short - all is now sorted.

Being an evangelical Ubuntu user, after them using a spare Ubuntu 12.04
LTS machine of mine and a quickish tour around a live CD plus some rather
nice textbook I picked up for a £1 I convinced them they should at least
have a duel-boot machine.

I downloaded and burnt the 12.04.4 iso 64 bit version. I then proceeded to
install but it bombed out having chosen for it to install itself alongside
Windows. I thought it would simply find the Windows partition and roughly
half the available space still left on the drive.

So, I tried again thinking I would choose the third and final option of
Other thinking it would simply allow me to manually partition. As I
type, I am now working from my recollection - the machine is now some
distance from me. I seem to recall there was a coloured graphic display (I
am colour blind) showing the existing partitions - but I can't recall
exactly how many it showed - but my friend suggested there were only 4
different colours - that might be wrong. Below that, was a table
describing it would seem the size of the partitions and the free space
available. I seem to recall there was /dev/sda but with no size info
against it. Below this there were 4 indented descriptions; /dev/sda1,
/dev/sda2, /dev/sda3. and / dev/sda4. Three of these were described as
NTFS and one FAT32. Can't remember the sizes, but I'm guessing the largest
was the one with Win7 on it.

At that point, I had no idea what to do and was not confident that no harm
would take place if I proceeded. So, I aborted the installation.

From what I can recall, Windows and the machine seemed to have the
following partitions
* where the windows original installation files were
* where windows was installed
* an HP partition for something or another
* and another which I can't recall.

When I used a USB stick at one point it was allocated G: Drive so I'm
assuming the others mentioned above were C, D, E and F (not necessarily in
the same order above) - four in total.

I have been reading http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Multiple_OS_Installation and
other references. If I understand correctly there is a maximum of 4
partitions allowed on a hard disk. But I am utterly confused as to how to
proceed. It is very important no damage is done to the windows
installation - far too much investment has taken place in terms of time,
customisation, software installs etc has taken place. The data is safe on
sticks or in the cloud. There is also a Ubuntu reputation issue I believe
- I have convinced my friend Ubuntu is so easy and simple compared to Win7.

Being a great believer in the adage you mustn't do anything that can't be
easily undone and you must always have a credible reversion plan, I would
welcome both a forward strategy and some detailed pointers on how I should
proceed to achieve a duel-booting machine.
Many thanks in advance. Sorry about the long post.

tweaking) what you mentioned of 'as if it was an individual computer'.

Then there is the virtual machine stuff that I know even less about.

For virtual machines, I recommend using Virtual Box, although you have
to do stuff to compile the Virtual Box extensions into the kernel -- it
comes with the commands you need to enter and is quite easy to do.

But with that comes the option, if you have enough RAM, to have a
different virtual machine on each workspace maybe 2 or 3, and your host
on another. Then you switch between virtual machines by switching the
workspaces.

The great thing about virtual machines is being able to try out
different versions of Linux without rebooting the PC, or even running
Windows so you can run a Windows program that will not otherwise run.
And you can save the state of the virtual machine when closing, so you
do not even have to shut down that OS, and when you restart it, it
carries on from where you left off.

I wonder if this is Flash/Gnash related? I recently found that Firefox
was running extremely slowly on any site with Flash elements, so I
removed Flash (I have heard it is very troublesome at times to some
Linux users) and installed Gnash instead. Firefox works much better, and
also with Flash-blocking add ons so that I only allow certain sites to
use Flash.

I am not sure if the GLX problem occurred before or after this.

My Desktop is XFCE on Ubuntu 12.04

Of course it might also have been a recent update that might have
knocked out GLX.

In using Synaptic I see that the GLX stuff is still installed. I tried
reinstalling some of it, but it made no difference.

I am using the Linux open source graphics driver for my graphics card,
nothing proprietary. It is an AMD card.

So how do I get GLX working again?

Re: [ubuntu-uk] GLX problem (solved)

2013-12-07 Thread David King
I just tried booting an older kernel and all my GLX
screensavers/programs are working again.

I was using Kernel Linux 3.2.0-56-lowlatency and then it was updated
yesterday to Kernel Linux 3.2.0-57-lowlatency and then the GLX problems
started, so I have now booted into Kernel Linux 3.2.0-56-lowlatency again.

Could there be a bug in the later kernel?

[ubuntu-uk] dpkg error on libgmp10

2013-11-08 Thread David King

I am having a problem with updating any software on my Ubuntu Studio 12.04

There are various updates listed, but when trying to install them I get

I removed this from the status file and ran

sudo apt-get -f install

I am still getting errors, and libgmp10 is installed, and is the latest
version, but Synaptic cannot list its installed files, and dpkg is
getting an error reading its files

I have tried just reinstalling libgmp10 but it fails, I have tried
updating the list of updates, I have tried updates via Update Manager,
Synaptic and apt-get on the CLI.

Whatever I try to do I get an error with dpkg, and it is something to do
with libgmp10. I am loathe to remove it as so much else depends on this
vital software.

If I try
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgmp10

Re: [ubuntu-uk] dpkg error on libgmp10

2013-11-08 Thread David King
Thanks for the suggestion. I did this, and when it rebooted, it did disk
checks, but then failed to mount anything, so I rebooted into Linux Mint
(also installed on this PC) and did a disk check of Ubuntu from gparted,
which did not find any errors.

The good news is that when I rebooted again and booted into Ubuntu, it
booted okay, and it offered the libgmp10 file in the Update Manager, so
I installed it that way. I also did a sudo apt-get autoremove in a CLI
and that worked too, so no more problems with dpkg it seems.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Virgin broadband from 20 to 60 megas

2013-07-20 Thread David King
In part it will depend on the speed of your wifi, it is slower than 20
Mbit/s then upgrading your Virgin broadband will make no difference.

Also consider the speed of the devices themselves, you wrote that HD
does not always work well, so it might be that your devices cannot
handle HD video well.

Increasing the speed of your connection is unlikely to make much
difference to the videos you download/stream. I have about 4 Mbit/s on
my broadband and can stream videos online okay, although HD videos not
always so smooth. Looking at the actual download speed for the video it
shows something less than the 4 Mbit/s.

I think that a faster internet connection will only allow you to do more
at once rather than making videos play better.

20 Mbit/s is already 5 times what I have and should be good enough for
streaming video. Even to more than one device at once.

I would suggest you only upgrade to 60 Mbit/s if it costs the same,
otherwise you are wasting your money, in my opinion.

Do you think I would notice a significant improvement from going from

Bonus question: the upgrade will come with virgins wireless router

show a significant improvement as well? Most of my gadgets are wireless.

[ubuntu-uk] Home folder keeps disappearing

2013-05-31 Thread David King
Sometimes my home folder is missing. When I boot up and get to the login
screen, I enter my password to login and it does not load the desktop,
but goes straight back to the login screen. And just now my home folder
literally just disappeared. I can see other user folders in /home but
not for my current user, although I am still logged in.

I am using Ubuntu Studio 12.04 XFCE and it is up to date, the last
updates were applied this morning, although the problem has persisted
for a while now. Although today is the first time I have lost my home
partition while logged in.

This is a real nuisance. I can see home folders in the same partition
for other users (from other distros I have installed on the same PC) but
not my own.

Any ideas why it keeps getting hidden and how to prevent it getting hidden?

Before that everything worked fine. So I do not know what happened to
break the system and OpenGL.

The only thing I can think of is I had a small problem with Crossover
running Photoshop, and I had to install the libjpeg (or similar)
library, 32-bit, to get that working. And I updated Crossover from
11.3 to 12.0.

Any ideas on how to get OpenGL working again?

I used to use Gwibber, and then a few months ago it seemed to stop
working properly, so I uninstalled it.

You might find one of the apps at
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/10/omg-5-five-facebook-apps-for-the-linux-desktop
helpful if Gwibber still gives problems. I have not tried them (other
than Gwibber). ALthough it could be a problem with the Facebook API
meaning that Gwibber is not receiving Facebook updates because of
Facebook, maybe even Facebook changed something in the way their feeds
go out to software through their API.

[ubuntu-uk] Problems with OpenGl and libGL

2012-12-15 Thread David King

I am running Ubuntu Studio 12.04 64-bit version.

I have OpenGL and libGL stuff installed, but recently things that
require it no longer run and I get an error message when trying to run
from the command line like this:

cairo-dock: error while loading shared libraries: libGL.so.1: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory

I have libgl1-mesa-glx installed, which provides libGL.so.1

I have Codeweavers Crossover 12.0 installed as well, and this has a
diagnostics program cxdiag which gives the following output:

   ~$ /opt/cxoffice/bin/cxdiag
   [MissingLibGlu]
   Level=Recommend
   Title=Missing 32bit libGLU.so.1 library
Description=This may be needed by some games or CAD applications.

   [MissingLibGsm]
   Level=Suggest
   Title=Missing 32bit libgsm.so.1 library
Description=Lets Windows applications use the GSM codec for audio
   compression and decompression.

   [MissingLibNss_mdns]
   Level=Require
   Title=Missing 32bit libnss_mdns.so.2 library
Description=This library is needed for network and Internet
access. Installing it is strongly recommended.

   [Properties]
   display.depth=24

   [MissingLibGL]
   Level=Recommend
   Title=Missing 32bit libGL.so.1 library
   Description=Provides hardware-accelerated Direct3D and OpenGL
support. This is used for games, but also for CAD applications.

   [OpenglNotWorking]
   Level=Recommend
   Title=OpenGL does not work
Description=OpenGL did not work in our simple tests. This means
OpenGL and DirectX applications, including most games, will likely
not work. Other applications should be unaffected.

I already installed the 32-bit libraries required by Crossover. Although
if it still needs the ones listed above, then how can I install those?
i.e. instead of the 64-bit versions, what command do use to install a
32-bit version? I tried sudo apt-get install libgl1-mesa-glx:386 and
similar but nothing got installed as it could not find the package.

Things like Cairo Dock which was the first thing I noticed had failed to
run yesterday needs OpenGL libraries and so will not run, although I do
not know if it is 32- or 64-bit.

Before that everything worked fine. So I do not know what happened to

Should have added use DeVeDe to make the DVD file from the mpg/mp4. This
saves an iso file that can be burned to disc. Works well for me. D

I have downloaded and used proprietory anti virus from well known AV companies,

Subject: [ubuntu-uk] OT Linux based anti virus cds

Hi
I am looking into LInux based anti virus cd's and found the following site

http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/linux-av-cd.html

just wondered if anyone had an experience in this area and perhaps some
suggestions.

I would assume cd's being read only makes them more immune from the type
of virius that may try and infect a flash drive type device that are
generally read / write.

Basically looking for something like the system rescue cd, but for anti
virus.

This may benefit others here too, esp those with friends who use
Windows but also complain of getting viruses.

Paul

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu not booting up

2012-11-22 Thread David King

I can now boot into Ubuntu Studio okay.

The only thing I did was, when in Linux Mint, to update GRUB. Maybe it
was trying to boot into an old kernel in Ubuntu Studio that was not
there? I am not sure why it was not working. Or it could be something
else was wrong.

But it is booting okay. I even updated the kernel and rebooted and it is
still okay.

How much free space do you have? e.g. what's the output of

$ df -h

?

It has 16 GB free space on that partition.
