The laptop socket is HDMI out only. You need a HDMI to VGA converter.
They're less than a fiver on eBay or Amazon, but I found the one with
sound stopped the Pi from booting unless I unplugged the sound cable first.

Have you considered fixing the port? Chances are it's a standard part
and could be grabbed at Maplin/ebay and soldered in as it's only 19
contacts. Depends on the telly and your soldering skills of course :)

[ubuntu-uk] Video Redirection

2014-10-01 Thread Nigel Verity
Hi

I have a Raspberry Pi with which I use my TV as a monitor, or at least I did
until I trod on the HDMI cable and damaged the socket on the back of the TV.

The only other inputs the TV has are a SCART and VGA. My laptop running Xubuntu
13.10 has both an HDMI socket and a VGA output. I know I may be asking a bit
much but does anybody know if it would be possible to connect the HDMI output
of the Pi to the corresponding socket on the laptop and redirect the signal to
the VGA, even if it means running some conversion software in between?.

Thanks

I watched the first of these and looked at the associated website, but I

[ubuntu-uk] Video/Audio Sync Problems

2011-07-02 Thread Nigel Verity

Hi

Over the last week or so I've noticed that, when playing any kind of video
files, the audio track seems to lag around 0.25 - 0.5 seconds behind the video.
It's the same whether I'm reading from a DVD, a file on my hard disk or a file
on a USB memory stick. There never used to be a problem, so I'm sure it's not
my hardware, particularly as it's the same on each of my 3 laptops, which all
run Xubuntu 11.04.

I assume that it must be something in a recent update that's at the bottom of
this. Does anybody have any ideas how to rectify this?

Last night, I had a play with Avidemux. I really am impressed by the
edit facilities. In some ways it's fairly basic, but it does allow
exact positioning of the cursor on a frame-at-a-time basis, and very
accurate delete, cut and paste facilities. I've only tried it by
inputting and outputting AVI files, but I found it far easier to use
that Kino or OpenShot. Shame I have to use Kino to do the capture from
my video camera ... would be nice if Avidemux offered a capture
facility as well ...

Hello Barry,
I have been using PiTiVi recently, after a great course run at Fossbox. We
used an MP4 container with a DivX codec. Output of this was great and was
relatively quick to render and is accepted by Vimeo and YouTube. I really
liked the editing options in PiViTi and found it very easy to use. We were
using Ubuntu 10.10.

Thanks John - and we'll probably be doing another free PiTiVi workshop
(along with John's graphics workshops) in early Spring - I'll post to
the list when we finalise what sessions we're running :)

I had a play with OpenShot last night. It looks very good, but I have
to say that it did crash once, and getting the codecs installed is not
clear.[1] Once that was sorted, it does have a very good dialog for
setting the codecs where you just pick what the target is (YouTube,
DVD, Bluray etc) and it will then set some sensible defaults. You can
then click the advanced tab, and tweak if required. That is one thing
it does better than PiViTi. I have not actually tried to create a
video with it yet.

According to the Lombard website, some of the features in PiViTi are still
goals (Transition effect) but its interesting to note that its written in
Vala (to me anyway).

Looking at the recently created OpenShot website http://www.openshot.org/,
it is looking a really good option for video editing, with lots of
features. It also uses the Media Lovin Toolkit
http://www.mltframework.org/as opposed to the Gstreamer system used by
others.

I hope to try out OpenShot at the weekend. If anyone does a write up of how
they got on with OpenShot, please let me know.

Thank you.

Hi,

Have just done a mate's wedding video.

Agree with you about PiTiVi, excellent front end but poor rendering.

I ended up converting the footage to digital video using ffmpeg and then
used kino to edit and render into the end result.

I also changed the sound track a bit by using Audacity to throw together
a sound track and Avidemux to mix it into the video.

After all this I used the tovid scripts to make the dvd and mkisofs to
generate an iso file of the dvd disc so he could burn his own copies.

Hello Barry,
Easiest way to add a range of codecs is to add the (meta) package
ubuntu-restricted-extras although that installs a lot of packages, some of
which you may not want added.

For the divx support, I usually use the package libxvidcore4 - xvid is the
open source divx codec. This is great for online videos and for video
libraries. I have seen some good high definition videos using the Matroska
container which in PiTiVi gives you a large number of codecs to choose
from. The Matroska [matroskamux] container may be a good alternative to the
mp4mux if you want more codec choice.

Not sure what the best codec would be for creating a DVD as I never use that
format. I am assuming you would use the ffmux_dvd container - there are
only a few options for video and audio codec when I select this container.

Thanks

That's interesting. I really like PiTiVi - it's a lovely front end. If
my render problem is caused by a particular codec, I'll do something
about it! I have an mp4mux container available, but not the DivX codec
you mention. Any advice on where to get this and how to make it show up
in the PiTiVi codec list?

Hello Barry,
I have been using PiTiVi recently, after a great course run at Fossbox. We
used an MP4 container with a DivX codec. Output of this was great and was
relatively quick to render and is accepted by Vimeo and YouTube. I really
liked the editing options in PiViTi and found it very easy to use. We were
using Ubuntu 10.10.

Initially we were going to use Kino, but we had problems with playback of
the video camera files in Kino. Otherwise Kino looks a good project too.

I guess there are problems due to the hit and miss codec support across all
operating systems and devices.

I haven't found time to look at OpenShot yet, but that looks interesting
too.

Thanks

[ubuntu-uk] Video and DVD creation ....

2010-11-03 Thread Barry Drake
Hi there

Just thought others might be interested in my experience of video
editing. I tried PiTiVi and was disappointed in the output quality. No
matter what options I tried, the result suffered from pattern
interference introduced during the render.

Kino captures and edits just fine and there is no unwanted interference.
I am now using Kino to capture and edit but not to render. I am then
importing the result into DeViDe which is an excellent GUI that makes a
DVD iso out of any video file you've got. This app seems to render very
well. I've not been able to get a result like this from any of the
other offerings so far. It also has loads of options, and the ability
to make a quick preview to test options out.

Regards,Barry Drake.

Success! I installed the two missing sets (the multiverse variants) and
successfully made a little music video, uploaded it, and embedded it on
my blog, all without a hitch. First time I've ever managed that, and I
have been trying on and off for years. Thanks! Rowan

Ah yes.. I can confirm that you do need these, as I had the same issue
trying to add the 'Benny Hill' music to a video clip. Not exactly PC,
but was a good laugh..

I imagine you need the right codecs installed for mp3, as they are not part
of the default ubuntu install (due to distribution restrictions, patents,
yuck..).

You could try install the Gstreamer plugin that supports mp3, one of the
following should do:

gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse

Well I dragged and dropped and MP3 in and it worked fine, although I
can't figure out how to add titles (I'll have to play further).

I believe I have the ubuntu-restricted-extras package installed. Are
you able to play the MP3 files in the Ubuntu Movie Player? (I had the
issue where it wouldn't import videos from my video camera, and then
when I tried to play them in Movie Player it prompted to install the
correct codecs).

I haven't looked at the PiTiVi forums yet, I did post a bug response
about the unhelpful message about not being able to find a specific
codec rather than it prompting to install them but I was asked to
suggest it as a feature. Guess it was just a bug to me (thinking about
it, I guess it might be more of a feature request).

Well, I have never been able to get PiTiVi to work, and I have it just
as it comes, ready installed in Ubuntu 10.04. I should like to be able
to make simple music videos and put them on YouTube, so that I can then
paste them into my blog. But every time I drag and drop an MP3 file into
PiTiVi, it says it is unable to open it. I tried asking about this on
the PiTiVi forum but I didn't have any replies last time I looked. A
detailed list of necessary codecs would be welcome, and it would be
interesting to know whether the Ubuntu team at Canonical are aware of
any issues with it. Rowan

I hope to do some basic video editing later this month and was going to try
using OpenShot .

More advanced options include Blender or the soon to be
open sourced
*Lightworks*which
are aimed at video editing professionals.

I would be interested to know how people got on with these tools...

There is the PiTiVi Video Editor in Ubuntu 10.04. Not used it much but
it looks fairly reasonable, maybe not too advanced but it worked with

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Video Card

2010-04-07 Thread pa...@fossbox.org.uk
Most recent chips will at least work with the open driver. With gdm it
can be pot luck how much hassle you get as it sometimes doesn't pick up
NVIDIA chips correctly even when they have Linux drivers. On half a
dozen boxes with chips that actually are supported, I've still had to
faff about with different drivers and then turn off compiz to get some
of the on-board NVIDIAs to stop freezing GNOME on Intrepid and Karmic
and then more hassle with codecs on some AV apps and/or hassle with
screen resolution.

There's plenty of forums where people thrash out whether ATI or NVIDIA
have suckier drivers but it's neck and neck ;) It's getting better with
NVIDIA and ATI but slowly. I have relatively few problem with Intel
graphics chips though and, unless you want to game, I try to stick with
Intel on-board chips as they mostly work out of box.

It doesn't seem to be there anymore but I got a really nice little Intel
box from eBuyer a couple of months ago for less than £300 which
installed like a lamb. If it's just for office purposes, you could look
at FitPC http://www.fit-pc.co.uk/ which is designed to take Ubuntu.

yeah gma950 (pulsebo), stay far away from those. but the rest of the
intel line work great. Although the intel gpu's are rather weak in terms
of performance. They'll handle compiz fine but not really good for say
games or whatever. Intel gpus tend to have the best support for "out of
the box" linux features like the display manager.

So yeah if you want performance go for Nvidia (or ATI, don't have much
experience with ati so can't comment), if you want ease of use and to
not have to deal with closed source drivers, go for intel if you can get
a mobo with intel graphics onboard

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Video Card

2010-04-07 Thread John Stevenson
Hello Jon,
Why not just buy a PC with linux preinstalled? Or better still, keep the
existing hardware and run Ubnutu on it as it should work more efficiently
than what they already have, possibly using xbuntu if the hardware is really
old.

You can of course run Ubuntu live from CD, but its a better experience
(performance wise) if you create a usb drive with Ubuntu Live on it. (I use
unetbootln to create the usb sticks, or
you could just use the live cd to install Ubuntu onto the usb stick).

*Examples of pre-installed PC's*:
http://www.thelinuxshop.co.uk/catalog/index.php?cPath=30
http://crave.cnet.co.uk/desktops/0,39029426,49296161,00.htm
http://www1.euro.dell.com/uk/en/home/Laptops/laptop-inspiron-10/pd.aspx?refid=laptop-inspiron-10&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1&~oid=uk~en~20211~laptop-inspiron-10_n00b1001~~

Otherwise, the Eee PC's all seem to run Ubuntu just fine as do many of the
netbooks. If the charity is just using Office and Internet applications,
then you dont need anything vastly powerful, so a netbook could be more that
adequate. I do development on my Eee PC netbook and have no performance
problems.

If you do want to build your own kit, then anything you buy graphics card
wise with an NVidia, ATI or even Intel should work fine these days. Be wary
of buying a card that is just out though, dont go for the top end (after all
its a charity) and you should be fine. If you find hardware you want to
buy, a quick google and check in the Ubuntu forums will tell you if people
have issues with it

Thank you
John

That's interesting because recently I asked some opinions on #ubuntu-uk
about this

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/189241

and someone warned me the ATI graphics card was not supported.

If it just for the Compiz effects and user interface then almost any
modern chipset should work just fine and "out-of-the-box". There are
(were) some issues with one of the intel chipsets (gma950?) but I am not
sure if that has been fixed.

My personal experience has been with Nvidia mainly. And although the
driver is binary and closed source, they do, at least, seem to update it
regularly and it generally *just works*.

ATI have been making big moves toward supporting linux and also open
sourcing much of the driver code. They just recently announced a new
driver that will support the brand new OpenGL 4.0 specification
simultaneously across Windows and Linux.

The long and short is that for most modern systems with a built-in GPU
you should be just fine. It might be worth just posting a link to a
machine you like of just so anyone can comment and in case there is a
"gotcha".

You might want to recommend some of the newer ION based systems using
the Intel Atom Dual Core processor and Nvidia embedded GPU. These are
just fine for "normal" desktop use and use much less power than
traditional PC h/w so will save the charity a shedload in running costs
over the years.

[ubuntu-uk] Video Card

2010-04-07 Thread Jon Farmer
Hi

I have been asked by a charity I work with to recommend some new PC to
replace some of their older machines. They are keen to give Ubuntu a try
after hearing me evangelize about it.

I am looking for the install process to go as smooth as possible and the
one area I am unsure of is the video display card. So can anyone
recommend a card that will work out of the box. I am looking for 3D
acceleration.

Any thoughts gratefully accepted.

[ubuntu-uk] Video capture card wanted

2010-01-06 Thread Colin Law
Hi

Apologies if I am not supposed to post this sort of thing here, there
seemed to be some similar posts in the archive so hopefully it is ok.

I am looking for an Ubuntu compatible video capture card for capturing
from a video camera and from a VHS recorder (to convert recordings to
DVD). I believe I want one with hardware encoding. Something like
the Hauppauge PVR 150 MCE I think, or an equivalent USB device would
be even better. If anyone has anything suitable surplus to
requirements that they would be prepared to sell I would be very
interested.

Many thanks

[ubuntu-uk] VIdeo recommendations

2009-10-17 Thread Stephen Garton
Afternoon All,

I have a hitachi HDD video camera that can record in 4:3 or 16:9
ratios. I can attach the camera to my PC via USB and browse the files,
they are .VRO file. I can copy these files to /home and they are
essentially mpeg files, which is fine. When I record in 4:3 format,
they come across fine, but there is a problem with 16:9 ones. The
thumbnails in Nautilus are correct (i.e. widescreen) but all media
players (and file properties) show the files as 4:3 ratio, which makes
them look odd when being played. Any ideas on how a) I can transfer
them across correctly (there is come windows-only software that comes
with it - I can't get it to work in wine) and/or b) some way to
convert them so they play in the correct ratio? I've tried ffmpeg with
the -aspect flag set to 16:9, but it didn't make any difference.

TIA,

Steve Garton

Personally, I'd install VLC and be done with it. Should play pretty
much anything you can throw at it. Codecs come with the package so
minimal arsing around.

Hi Farran,

Installing the 'ubuntu-restricted-extras' package should fix video
playback problems for proprietary formats. If you also want to play
restricted formats like .wmv then you can enable the medibuntu
repository and install the 'w32codecs' package. Instructions to add the
medibuntu repository can be found at

Hope that helps you out.

I've had this, are you on an ATI graphics card? There's something you
can do about the Xv layer or something, which seems to sort it out.

Just confirm for me that you use an ATI card, and I'll have a look for it.

Talked to my son who's a TV editor. Sounds like your friend has got
Avid's native OMFI files, for which there's almost certainly no
readily-available converter. Best bets are (a) get hold of the original
video source and capture it yourself to a format your editing software
uses; (b) find someone with Avid, and have them export the files in a
format you can edit (apparently professional editors would export to
QuickTime to swap files with each other).

WinFF?

It seems to be able to convert pretty much anything to anything.

http://biggmatt.com/winff/

It's GPL (based on ffmpeg) and cross platform.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] video editing

2008-01-22 Thread Javad Ayaz
ok heres what happened since my last email.

I put both my files on my mp3 player to carry to work where i would mess
around with it on Windoze Movie maker. Then at 6.18 in the morning i rose to
find another email by a Robert McWilliam. I read what he wrote and seeing
how it was almost time for me to get up anyway (Id been dreaming of joining
files too). So i read his instructions. Carefully going through his
instructions i found that the path i had put was not actually correct. So i
corrected it. and then i copied and pasted both command lines into terminal.
and behold there infront of me was the desired "joined" file.

Just wana say a BIG thank you to all who took the time out in helping me in
this!

Thank you :)

OK, quick command line primer. Each program you want to run should
either be at the start of the line or be indicated in some other way
that it is a program[1]. After the program name in a command line will
come any arguments that you want to give the program, these should be
separated by spaces. The fact that spaces separate arguments is one of
the problems you've got as there is a space in the path you want to
use as an argument. In this case you have to tell the shell that this
space is part of a single argument not separating two. The easiest way
to do this is to put double quotes round the argument.

What you have mentioned above is actually two commands, did you run it
as two commands or as one?

1st command (including fix for the space):
cd "/media/sda5/Nuzhet shadi/mehndi edited/"

This will change the working directory to the path specified.

2nd command:
cat mehndil1.vob mehndi2.vob > mehndi_joined.vob

This calls cat on the first two files, and redirects the output to
mehndi_joined.vob. cat conCATenates multiple files together and
outputs the results to the standard output. The > symbol redirects the
standard output from the preceding command to somewhere else, in this
case the file specified.

> still resulted in nothing! :(

I'm willing to bet money it didn't ;) It probably didn't do what was
desired but telling us what did happen (Were there any error messages?
What were they? Was the computer busy for a while? ...) makes it
easier to figure out where things went wrong.

All that being said importing the two files to whichever video editor
you were using is probably an easier approach if you're not
comfortable with the command line.

Robert

[1] e.g. what follows a | symbol is another program, this means that
the output of the command in front of the | is the input for the
command following the |
If that made no sense don't worry about it too much.

Managed to get that working here, merged 4 .vob files into 1. Just need to
find something that will all me to edit them, have tried avidemux, but that
needs the file to be put through projectx so that the audio and video are
synced together.

I am not a video editor myself, but can't you just drag the 2 scenes into a
video editor and export them together as one file? You can in MS Movie
Maker, I don't see what difference it would make in apps such as kino, where

Yeah this is a command to be run in the terminal. You need to specify
the paths to the files, I was assuming you were in the directory
containing them. You could however do this:

cat /path/to/file1.vob /path/to/file2.vob > /path/to/output.vob

The output file will be created for you be the shell.

VOB files are just MPEG streams so you *should* be able to just do:

Javad,

It pains me to do this, however:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=kino
+tutorials&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=com.ubuntu:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

There are a huge number of Kino tutorials out there, and I humbly
suggest that if you search for the Kino internet site, it will probably
have instructions to achieve what you want to do.

Please understand that although I am keen to help where possible, the
dreaded phrase "Google is your friend" does stem from posts similar to
this one where the information is out there, it just hasn't been
searched for.

Kind regards,

Matt

Javad,

The size increase is because Kino converts everything into DV format so
you can edit it first.

Once you have edited it and exported it, the size will decrease rapidly.

May I advise you to look up the term top posting, and why its not
recommended on lists, before someone, unlikely to be me, but someone wearing
a slackware shirt kills you slowly with a USB Hacksaw (watch Hak.5 if you
dont know what that is).

Anyway, the best way to find the best editor is to try them, I would give
kino a try seen as it is a good replica of Winshite movie maker.

Hmm, I appear to have hit send too early. My apologies.

Video editing under linux can be done in lots of applications. Here's a few
you might try:-

Kino, cinelerra, avidemux. All of which work to a greater or lesser degree.

If you're brave also try:-

Pitivi, Lives (neither of which "work") [yet].

If you're foolhardy also consider:-

GNEVE.

However if you tell us what you want to do, then we might be able to help.
However I suspect a significant amount of advice will be of the "try the
ones listed above and see how they work out for you".

Cheers,
Al.

I don't mind using multiple different apps for different things. That
kinda makes sense in a way. If a video editor tried to be an audio
editor it might end up being crap at both. At least on Linux we have
tools like Avidemux and Audacity which are "good enough".

I wonder if enough people got a few quid together we could sponsor the
development of a decent non-linear video editor? I'd certainly put my
hand in my pocket for it.

Cheers,
Al.

I agree with you up to a point... However, I don't know that the Windows
world of video editing is so much better...

At the moment my (work-related) video editing / DVD mastering is done in
the Windows world... and I've worked out that I actually use _4_
different applications to make the average DVD.

- Adobe Audition for the audio tracks
- Adobe Premier for the Video editing itself
- MS Paint (kid you not) for rendering simply JPGs for use as titles :-)
- Adobe Encore for generating DVD menu structures

- Oh, and theoretically I use Adobe Media encoder to do the rendering,
but it's so well integrated with Premier these days I don't think of it
as a "separate application" as such, just a popup options box within
Premier.

At the moment, I see good free / OSS alternatives to Audition and MS
Paint... but stick with what's there because I know them well, can drive
them very, very, quickly, and there's still one area (fourier noise
reduction) where the proprietary software has an edge technically.

Mark

Ohh... yeah... maybe it's a bit hard to use three diffrent... anyway you
should use one for the effects and one for the editing.. there's a lot of
