set my resolution to (total) 2048x768. Still getting compiz (core) -

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 591656] Re: scrolling issues using touchpad

2010-06-17 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
You may be right, simar. I thought the synclient output showed the raw
hardware output before the driver processes it, but it may be that the
xev output and synclient output shows essentially the same. Anyway, we
have enough data to forward this bug to the upstream developers. Would
you like to do that, simar? (I see you are new at bug triage) If not, I
will do it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 251107] Re: [Intrepid] nvidia_drv.so: undefined symbol: AllocateScreenPrivateIndex

2010-06-17 Thread papukaija
@Miro: Intrepid isn't any more supported. Anyway, this bug is fixed for
the nvidia 96 series. The Tnt2 is part of the older 71 driver which does
not support the new xservers (Jaunty and higher) but this bug report
isn't about xserver support (and don't open a bug about xserver's
compatibility, only nvidia can provide a fix). Nvidia isn't probably
going to release a fix for it in the near future. However, starting with
Lucid (10.04 LTS), Ubuntu uses by default the free (gpl) nouveau driver
which is better and faster than the nv driver but it doesn't yet provide
3d support.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 595252] Re: [radeon] screen corruption on resume from hibernate, then cycles between blank and corrupted screen

2010-06-17 Thread a.h()
The plot thickens:
When in the middle of normal computer use (i had just started flightgear,
which then crashed, I then started it again), the same corruption appeared,
with the same cycling behaviour, and similar error messages. I started the
xserver again which brought nothing (I did it semi-blindly through the
terminal) but that brought nothing (however that wiped the Xorg.0.log from the
crash). Attached is the extract from kern.log, which also includes the first
crash of flightgear, which might however have nothing to do with the graphics
errors.

2010-06-17 Thread Stuart
Igor Wojnicki wrote Take a lookat StuartN's post:

This might be a hint what causes the freezes.

Switching the root filesystem to writeback mode (instead of the default
ordered mode) will work with EXT3 or EXT4. It is not a solution, but it
is possibly a method of gathering further data. In my case, I have a
system that is functioning (almost) perfectly with kernel 2.6.34 and
freezing with kernel 2.6.32-22. The freeze now affects a single process,
all the inodes attached to that process and subsequently all processes
depending on those inodes - yes, the system does fully freeze after some
time, but I have no difficulty accessing logs after recognizing that a
process has frozen. (See
http://www.iol.ie/~stuartneilson/Bootup_fsck.html)

Following the first message, EXT4-fs warning (device sda4): dx_probe:
dx entry: limit != root limit (which would equally apply to EXT3-fs),
leads to a commit 3d82abae9523c33d4a16fdfdfd2bdde316d7b56a with the
title dir_index: error out instead of BUG on corrupt dx dirs -
http://mirror.celinuxforum.org/gitstat//commit-
detail.php?commit=3d82abae9523c33d4a16fdfdfd2bdde316d7b56a -
http://lkml.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0709.3/0208.html

I have not located the version where this is merged into the Ubuntu
kernel, or indeed if it is directly relevant. I am going to test
Paul.Drover's suggested test for affected systems from
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9471373postcount=496

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)

2010-06-17 Thread Julien Olivier
Brian: I spoke too soon. I found a reliable way to reproduce the problem
with 2.6.34-v9patch-generic:

 - if I start my laptop on AC or battery, then suspend it, it works.
 - if I plug my laptop on AC, then suspend it, it works.
 - if I put it back to battery, then suspend it, two things can happen:
 1) it tries to suspend, but fails, but I can go on working.
 2) it tries to suspend, but fails, and everything is frozen...
 - if I put my laptop on battery, then plug it back to AC, and then try to
suspend it, if will fail as if it were on battery.

In conclusion, it seems that whenever the laptop gets unplugged from AC,
something happens and makes it impossible to suspend it, even if I re-
plug it, most of the times even resulting in a freeze.

Sweet. That's the second DRI2 crash I've wandered into today.

I know there are a couple of DRI2 patches pending on 1.8.2. This is
easily reproducible for me, I'll see if the patches fix it.

We should move to 1.9 fairly soon, too.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 568988] Re: [Lucid][Ubuntu 10.04][ATI cards] Slow/freeze windows management (resize, maximise, .etc) with fglrx driver + compositing desktop.

2010-06-17 Thread DLohner
I'm running Lucid (x86_64) with the 2.6.34-020634 kernel from kernel-
ppa/mainline on a Thinkpad W500 (Radeon HD 3650).

Downloading the proprietary driver from
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-
installer-10-6-x86.x86_64.run and installing worked for me after adding
the attached patch to dkms and using the installer's option to build an
ubuntu package. I suppose, up to kernel version 2.6.33 no additional
patch should be necessary.

Windows now minimize and resize very smoothly. Also memory usage of X is
constant (after running X for 1,5 hours), although it is pretty high
with 360 mb.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 595458] [NEW] After installing Nvidia drivers and rebooting Admin account has no permissions to do anything

2010-06-17 Thread matt edmunds
Public bug reported:

After a fresh installation from the 64 bit alt CD onto a software raid0
configuration of two SSD drives everything works as expected. After
installing the NVIDIA drivers from the hardware manager dialogue and
rebooting i have no permissions to view and use sound, shutdown or
reboot (just logs out to gdm and refuses to shutdown from there too),
cannot mount any drives, or any system utilities requiring su
permissions. If un installation of the NVIDIA drivers is performed and
rebooted the problem disappears. This is repeatable on another system
using SSD drives and raid 0 vis software raid (mdadm). When not using
software raid and no SSD drives the problem doesnt exist. The problem
can intermittently exist when using either software raid 0 with ordinary
drives, or when using SSD drives and no raid.

You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber

Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: xorg

All goes to login screen when:
1.) FF with 10-50 Gif tabs open
2.) FF with 5 gif tabs open and a programm witch uses also a lot cpu is open

If Cpu is used a lot (for example the same gifs with chrome) then nothing
like that happens (chrome on overload works slower at motion start(switching
tab) but regains better speed then overloaded FF)

Apport i have made to start at start but when i log back in i dont get the
 crash report.

 Gif sizes:
 100x100 - 250x250
 1/2 mb-    3mb

   Cpu    Ram    Swap
 FF closed:  37       179        0
 FF Open :   43       207        0
 FF 10gifs:   74       247        0
 TabSwit:  99-100   247        0
(TabSwitch = switching from one gif to another ctrl+tab)
Now again reproducing crash happened when opened one more tab and switched
from one to random next tab.

Doing the same on google-chrome uses all the time all cpu and switching gifs
at start makes them laggy till they gain speed but gif speed in chrome is
better with a lot gifs then in FF with a lot gifs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 595177] Re: Screen Immediately Relocks Itself After Unlocking

2010-06-17 Thread Eric
as a workaround you need to go to
System - Preference - Screensaver
and disable
- Activate screensaver when computer idle
- Lock screen when screensaver is active

After this you do not encounter this issue anymore.
Bear in mind that you need to lock your workstation when you go to grab some
donuts in the kitchen :-)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 362359] Re: Focus gets stuck to a window - impossible to select other windows

2010-06-17 Thread Stephen Blackheath
Yes, this bug still exists on Lucid with latest updates, but it is now
much less frequent. On Karmic it would happen every 1-2 days. I've
been running Lucid for over a month and it has taken this long to happen
only once. (I use my computer all day every day.)

Exactly the same bug: Focus is stuck in a Window. Can get to other
windows only by closing the stuck window, then you're stuck in the next
window. Alt-Tab doesn't work (no effect whatsoever). I think the mouse
cursor is a resize one like -| but I'm not certain. Resize works so
you can expose other windows, but clicking on them has no effect.

2010-06-17 Thread Rosca Stefan
Also affects me , ACER EXTENSA 7620g with Ati Mobility Radeon HD 2400XT.
Desktop is very slow, slow minimizing, maximizing, open aplications.
With open source driver the system is very fast but open gl in games is
slow, I can play Open Arena only with minimal details and resolution.
Also I mention that Ati proprietary driver make system to raise from 170
MB RAM usage to 470 MB.

Given that it doesn't happen with the proprietary fglrx drivers, it's
definitely related to bug #373669. See comments 16 and 17 in that bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 595495] [NEW] Synaptics Driver doesn't load for Lenovo ThinkPad Travel Keyboard

2010-06-17 Thread Noel J. Bergman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

Reposting Bug 201253, since was requested to open a new bug rather than
re-open the old one that was never touched.

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

The Lenovo ThinkPad Travel Keyboard - US English (Part no. 31P9490)
does not work with the current synaptics X11 driver/evdev. When running
off of the boot cd, both the trackpoint and touchpad work, but only
through the mouse driver, so none of the special touchpad
functionality like scrolling works.

See also: http://www.jan-steinhoff.de/linux/synaptics-usb.html (it's
06CB:0009, Synaptics Composite or UltraNav)

This is still present in Maverick, and (of course) present in Lucid,
Karmic, et al.

Yes please, do reboot.

1) Rename xorg.conf.
2) Reboot.
3) Configure monitors with g-d-p.
4) Reboot (or logout/login should work) to reproduce the issue.

If it's still broken, please attach the new /var/log/Xorg.0.log from
this attempt. Thank you!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 595177] Re: Screen Immediately Relocks Itself After Unlocking

2010-06-17 Thread Cerin
It's almost like there's a second routine running that's locking the
screen, and this is being applied over top of the value set in
Screensaver Preferences.

I just noticed my screensaver also seems to activate a bit too early. I
have the basic Blank screen set to activate and lock the screen after
1 hour of inactivity. However, my screen blanks after about 5 minutes of
inactivity and doesn't lock. I would expect the screen should not blank
until the time specified in the Screensaver Preferences dialog.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 555169] Re: [lucid] Keyboard and mouse freeze after grub, usb and PS/2 keyboard not working in X (after upgrade? bad-upgrade to lucid)

2010-06-17 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Unfortunately, the problem isn't solved after all. I still have the
occasional (and rather frequent, it feels) keyboard and mouse lag.
Moreover, which might be related, I sometimes don't get to the login
screen at all. I'm just left at the splash screen forever and am forced
to use the power button to get out. Looking through my log files, I see
these three types of warning repeatedly:

gdm-session-worker[1287]: WARNING: Unable to load file '/etc/gdm/custom.conf':
Filen eller katalogen finns inte
gdm-binary[880]: WARNING: Unable to find users: no seat-id found

Could this be a GDM bug?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 595335] Re: Computer shuts down on heavy CPU usage due to overheating

2010-06-17 Thread Flavio Capobianco
Yes, thanks for pointing that out. I saw that comment yesterday. I tried
installing the latest 2.6.35 kernel from the ppa (The maverick
backported kernel), but the problem persists. Although I get an extra
sensor for the video adapter, the fans are not turned on automatically
and I still get very high tempreature.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)

2010-06-17 Thread Jim Brumbaugh
Thanks Brian:

I'm one of those with an 855 Intel chipset.

I tried out your system patch on a completely clean 10.04 install.

Though the dots animation screen proior to the login screen is not
visible, log in proceeds perfectly.

Only problem is my Compiz graphics have been reduced to the Ubuntu
8.10 to 9.04 range where video playing in media player of VLC does not
track window dragging until the window is released. Additionally,
Windows-E does not resize the video playing in the window. This means
I'm back to playing one video at a time as the video playback is
locked to a hard screen region, not to a logical screen region.

Additionally the sleep problem fixed with 10.04 has reverted back to
9.04. If I close and reopen the lid while the system is running, the
system locks.

Regressing my system by 6 to 12 months is not the way to go. Sorry.

I should mention that aside from the sleep problem, I have full 3D
compiz graphics with no glitches in the default install of 9.10 I'm
still running as my main system on the same Dell x300 laptop.

Thanks for the effort. Hope this helps.

Now about the rumors.. is this maybe a problem in Intel's driver
supporting my older hardware, and are they doing any work? I think
I've noticed at least one Intel driver come down the pike so far..

I've posted this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-

have no power management with the ati open source drivers. The
difference is that in my case my fans are turned off and the computer
shuts itself down due to overheating.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 595335] Re: Computer shuts down on heavy CPU usage due to overheating

2010-06-17 Thread Flavio Capobianco
I must correct myself. It DOES happen too with the fglrx proprietary
drivers. I tried OCRing and using a clutter-dependant plug in for
Banshee and the temperature rose nevertheless and computer had to shut
itself down again.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

When I'm doing a demanding CPU activity (ripping a CD, doing OCR, etc),
the computer shuts itself down due to overheating (more than 99 C).

I've tried running sudo sensors-detect but no modules were loaded.

I've also tried booting with option acpi.power_nocheck, but to no use.

I've also tried adding options radeon modeset=1 to /etc/modprobe.d
  /radeon-kms.conf.

Lastly, I updated my BIOS from the vendor's webpage, but it didn't help
  either.

- This only happens while I'm on the open-source ATI drivers. When I tried
- the proprietary fglrx drivers, I wasn't able to reproduce it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 595623] [NEW] Screen does not refresh properly on ATI Radeon 9800 since Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 on pre-existing user

2010-06-17 Thread W. Prins
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I've got a slightly strange problem that I'm filing as a bug since it
might potentially hit other users. Basically the desktop is not
updating/refreshing properly when I log into my pre-existing user after
re-installing with Lucid from scratch. (I have a seperate /home
partition and usually upgrade by nuking the system partition and
reinstalling while retaining my /home partition and user files. This
has not been a problem until now.)

Things I've tried:
1.) Created a new test user with no prior history. This presents no problem.
2.) User my original user as is. Doesn't work -- desktop displays but any
further clicks/windows are not displayed unless you switch displays in some
fashion (VT switch, Super-E and back to zoom out and zoom in again) or such, at
which point the display does update as expected, but is then stuck again as
before.
3.) I've tried overwriting/copying the clean-state test user's profile files on
top of my existing user account files. Behaviour is same as reported in 2.)
This implies that the problem is possibly caused by a remnant or setting taken
over from my prior install that's not been overwritten by the copy from the
test user.

Any suggestions on how to track down what might be wrong and/or which
configuration folders I should nuke to try and rectify this problem
would be appreciated.

 [updated]
Since the new version of ubuntu/kubuntu (9.04 jaunty) a new bug occurs with
ATI cards and desktop effects enabled.
With fglrx driver, the unminimizing of windows is really slow ... it can take
 from 1 to 3 seconds.
Also, the maximizing, unmaximizing and Alt+Tab present the same problem.
The opening of a window present the same bug, freezing the system for 1sec.
This bug is under both gnome and kde (4.2.1)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 555169] Re: [lucid] Keyboard and mouse freeze after grub, usb and PS/2 keyboard not working in X (after upgrade? bad-upgrade to lucid)

2010-06-17 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
I used gdmsetup to change to automatic login, then rebooted, changed
back to multiuser again, and rebooted twice more. I now have the
following warnings in my log files:

gdm-binary[902]: WARNING: Unable to find users: no seat-id found

gdm-simple-greeter[1376]: Gtk-WARNING:
/build/buildd/gtk+2.0-2.20.1/gtk/gtkwidget.c:5636: widget not within a
GtkWindow

gdm-session-worker[1378]: GLib-GObject-CRITICAL: g_value_get_boolean:
assertion `G_VALUE_HOLDS_BOOLEAN (value)' failed

I.e. the warning about /etc/gdm/custom.conf are now gone. The two other
warnings I've had are the same, and I now have a new one; the GLib-
GObject-CRITICAL message. I'll keep my eyes up for the mouse/keyboard

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 564122] [NEW] lost dual monitor support after upgrade

2010-06-17 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: ttf-indic-fonts

Asus 1000 HE, Atom 280. After a recent update, I have not been able to
configure the external monitor (LG W2252TQ). It will not permit
shutting off the laptop display and turning on the external monitor. At
the moment, desktops 1, 2, 3 are on the external monitor; desktop 4 is
laptop only.

Also, I cannot set visual effects above none, whether using the
external monitor or not. This results in cairo dock appearing with a
large black block around it because there is no compositing.

I'm sorry. I reported a few different bugs, and don't remember what problem I
was having. I think I remember something about going into monitor preferences
and overlooking something dumb and obvious. I do not have a problem with my
monitor being detected.

Thank you very much for checking up.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 560570] Re: fglrx fails to identify attached monitor, displays blank screen

2010-06-17 Thread Manuel Sanchez
Just to report that the behaviour experienced after updating flgrx to
the latest version (2:8.723.0ubuntu4) is identical (brief flash in
Plymouth, then Xorg hangs with 100% CPU load on boot). The outputs for
all logs all the same (nothing meaningful, AFAIU).

I reiterate my offer to the developers to help retrieving any debugging
information that may be relevant.

Regards, Manuel

issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 595282] Re: Mouse pointer invisible after upgrading to 2:2.9.1-3ubuntu5

2010-06-17 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hm. Does adding “blacklist vga16fb” to the kernel command line make the
pointer work for that boot? We had problems early in the 10.04
development cycle which got triggered by the interaction of vga16fb and
lshw -C.

Please give that a try and post your dmesg log.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 524774] Re: xmodmap failure BadValue error, 118 (X_SetModifierMapping)

2010-06-17 Thread Gerard
I got this error as well, but I kept messing with my script that changes
the key modifiers and it seems to work for me now. The script is
attached in the hopes that it may help someone else until this is
resolved/better understood.
