[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1113454] Re: Artefacts with nouveau driver
Seems that it is a problem with Nouveau drivers that is known. Yesterday I discovered that in softwaresources I could now select the old Nvidia 173 driver. This solved all my problems instantly: no freezes, no artefacts and reasonable speed. For me the bug is purely 'academic' now. This is the dmesg just after the problem arises. I have found out that disabling in Compiz - Opengl the following items: - framebuffer object - Vertex buffer object - Always use buffer swapping Decreases the impact of the bug. At least the application windows are redrawn after artefacts show. It's however not completely gone. Unity bar is still heavily impacted. dconf reset -f /org/compiz setsid unity makes (most of) the artefacts in the Unity bar disappear although not for long. ** Attachment added: Dmesg just after artefacts show up https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/1113454/+attachment/3522381/+files/dmesg.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1113454 Title: Artefacts with nouveau driver To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/1113454/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1113454] Re: Artefacts with nouveau driver
it seems to be related to compositing. I have installed LXDE and I'm already working all morning without any problems opening and closing programs, browsing the web etc. In 'plain' Ubuntu I would already have had artefacts causing me to restart X. There a lot of problems with Nvidia and Nouveau run systems apparantly. It seems not to be related to the drivers though, but a problem with compositing. It all started for me in 12.04: this was totally unusable for me: complete freeze every 10 minutes or even less. 12.10 runs into problems as well. Nouveau shows artefacts, but I can at least restart X by myself. With Nvidia drivers installed (all versions tried out, including those of x-edgers and x-swat) my system becomes suddenly less responsive, fans sound like an aircraft going up in the sky and then X crashes and restarts. I truly hope that 13.04 will not have this problems anymore. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1113454] [NEW] Artefacts with nouveau driver
Public bug reported: On my laptop, Acer Aspire 7520 with a Geforce 8400m G graphics card I can't get the nvidia driver working correctly: this driver crashes my system (brings it to a total freeze, not abililty to start another session or reboot) totally at least 3 times a day. With Nouveau drivers it seems to work fine, but after some time, I get artefacts in programs, on the desktop and the unity bar. It gets unusable very fast. Restarting X solves the problem, but causes (obviously) a restart of all running apps. I have added x-edgers ppa instead of the regular source, but this brings only a very slight improvement (at least so it seems), Well, I have includes a screenshot of my messed up desktop. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1033263] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 freezes with nvidia drivers
@ Perre. Don't think it's Java related. I've got the standard java option installed that comes with Ubuntu and my machine crashes with Nvidia Drivers. My laptop runs almost without crashed on the 173 version of the Nvidia drivers, but seems to run completely stable if I disable Nvidia drivers completely (this will activate the open source Nouveau drivers). Nouvuau drivers aren't bad at all, as long as you don't plan to run 3D games in my opinion. Perhaps you can try this? I'm still running 12.04 on an external HD to test it and I have managed to get an almost acceptable stabililty with driver version 173, but I'm currently testing without Nvidia drivers, thus with Nouveau drivers and this seems to be completely stable. There are other bugs with Ivy bridge systems etc. that cause 12.04 to come to a complete freeze, but these bugs seem to be more kernel related. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1033263 Title: Ubuntu 12.04 freezes with nvidia drivers To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/1033263/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1033263] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 freezes with nvidia drivers
Nvidia just released new drivers. http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/linux-display-amd64-304.43-driver-uk.html Some of the bug fix descriptions look like a solution for the problems I have (playing youtube videos, or just starting firefox caused problems on my machine/ hangs). Just don't know how to (easily) install these drivers to test them: Fixed a bug that caused pre-release versions of X.Org xserver 1.13 to crash when certain GLX operations were performed, such as when starting Firefox. Fixed a bug that caused VDPAU to hang when expanding the YouTube Flash Player. Fixed a bug that caused gnome-settings-daemon to revert display configuration changes made by nvidia-settings. Updated nvidia-settings to use RandR per-CRTC gamma control, when available. When controlling an X server with support for RandR 1.2, nvidia-settings will display the color correction widget as a tab within each display device page, instead of a per-X screen color correction page. Fixed a bug that prevented the display palette from being updated immediately after an application called XStoreColors. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
@ Jeremy and all others here. It's important to split up this bug report/ file separate bugs for certain hardware configurations and concerning (suspected) problematic packages. This thread is too long and too fuzzy to be worked on by any developer. What should he / she test? Where to start? Which package is involved? I've reported a bug report specific for my machine and related to Nvidia graphics driver and I was being helped: I've got a much much more stable system now with Nouveau drivers. Also be sure to make the appropriate dumps etc. ( http://www.cebuntu.com/how-to/how-to-report-bugs-from- terminal-in-ubuntu/ ) Others here may have problems related to Ivy bridge and certain kernelversion/ kernelmodules, others may suffer from a problem caused by whatever. You really should stop screaming here and do what's right (post separate bugs against multiple packages). I really don't agree that what we see here is weak troubleshooting. My experience is that you'll get help if (and only if) you post a specific bug, with dumps from your sytem and against a specific package. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187 Title: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently. @ Brian Colburn Please see also bug # 1033263 related to Nvidia Drivers. My suggestion is to try the Nouveau drivers instead (deactiviting the Nvidia restricted drivers completely). I had this bug on my HP dm1 4xxx series notebook (AMD e-450 / radeon 6230m / BCM 4313). I had full system lockup with no other option but hard reset. It occurs in other linux distributions also but Ubuntu suffered the most by a long shot. I followed all the threads and tried many of the suggestions. Over two weeks I have tried 3.2, 3.4 and 3.5 kernel and had many many reinstalls. I have tried with/without proprietary amd catalyst drivers (as well as different versions) and with/without the proprietary broadcom drivers. I also tried various desktop environments. The problem persisted despite my efforts. Most often, the computer would crash at high system loads, when the fan was just kicking in and the computer was hot. However I believe I now have a workaround (working for 3 days without problem): Disable the kernel thermal module with thermal.off=1 1. sudo gedit /etc/default/grub from: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash to: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash thermal.off=1 2. sudo update-grub I found several sources for this workaround including: arch forums, ubuntu forums and the hpsupport forums. If you disable the OS's control of the fan with this workaround then I would be careful that the BIOS is doing it's job correctly without the OS by paying attention to the heat of your laptop and by listening to the sound of the fans. Also, ensure that any useful fan control options are enabled in BIOS settings. -- You received this bug notification because you are subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187 Title: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
Please not that this bug report seems to become a dead end. To many 'almost' the same problems. When reporting bugs, it's better to be as specific as possible about the bug and the hardware on which this bug shows. For those who have this: - Complete freezes with only mouse pointer still moving - Multiple times per hour - Easily to invoke by using Firefox or Chromium webbrower or playing video And having: - Nvidia proprietary driver installed (the one provided by Ubuntu as recommended) - A Nvidia Geforce card with shared memory, using a laptop - Standard kernel (3.2) provided by Ubuntu installed And: Not suffering from this bug when de-activating the Nvidia driver and using the Noveau driver instead. You are kindly invited to join me at bug # 1033263 if your problem is exactly the same as described above. All others are perhaps better off to exactly (re)formulate their problem as specific as possible and report their problem as a seperate bug. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently
Integrated graphics seems to be the problem: this takes some of the main RAM memory and this somehow causes the problem. This seems to be confirmed by what Kai Nickel reports. After putting an old Nvidia card in his system the problem is gone. This is most surely a card that does not share memory but has it's own dedicated memory. Kai, can you confirm this? The problem than still is, were exactly the bug is situated. Many (but not all) seem to find a (partial) solution by installing a newer kernel, others seem to find a solution with a different Nvidia driver (of course the latter only applies to those using Nvidia cards). However this is still a very serious problem as all newer low and mid end desktops and laptops come with integrated graphics these days. It is very hard to believe that no one at Canonical noticed this bug until now. Bug still unassigned. Bug heat already 560: more than twice the number of a security related bug, yet no one seems to bother. Weird, and of course not very healthy for Ubuntu. @ Yurx Cherio: I share you thoughts. Let us know if kernel 3.4 brought the solution for you. I have an acer 7520 laptop with 2 Gig of Ram, Geforce 8400M with AMD Turion64 X2: an older system, but until version 12.04 without (serious) problems. For my installing a newer kernel did not solve the problem: my system became a bit more stable, but still not workable, still hanging at least once an hour. @ Michael. That would have been just luck as this bug is still not picked up actively. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently
@ openmissoula and Martin Polden. I completely lost my faith in Ubuntu- bug fixing. I'm back running 11.10, but I'm seriously considering to switch to either another distro (Opensuse or Fedora perhaps) or even worse, back to Windows. Yes Windows! Windows 7 isn't bad at all: it does at least not crash several times a day like Ubuntu 12.04 now does and even my built in bluetooth would work on my laptop (something that Ubuntu fails to do even my laptop is almost 4 years old). The bug is not only Ivy bridge related, but surely related to laptops with integrated graphics using shared memory. And there ought to be lots and lots of those systems out there. How many of us still run normal desktops? So there must be lots of users that have this problem or potential users that would run into trouble when trying Ubuntu 12.04. Very unfortunate while Ubuntu gets more and more (positive) reviews in the press. A big bug like this could kill Ubuntu! I can't see why no one seems to be interested in this bug at canonical? What's going on? Did they forget about stability and that with an LTS release?!!! Bug heat is now over 400 and no one seems to bother(unassigned/ no importance set yet)! I even reported this to OMG-ubuntu and other Ubuntu friendly websites, but they even don't react! It seems the whole Ubuntu world is in denial mode somehow. Perhaps I should try ZD net? For me it's clear now that fast bug fixing is also not happening in the Linux world, although many Linux users (including myself) used this as an argument against the Redmond OS, as well as it's stability. Tried / tested kernel 3.3.6. Worked better, but I still get freezes. I'm back to 11.10 on my laptop. 12.04 is still unusable even with kernel 3.3.6. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 64bit completely freezes frequently
It doesn't seem to be related to the Atheros Network Adaptor as I suggested before. Though my system becomes more stable not using wireless networking it seems to be a problem caused by system load/ screen refresh. As soon as I start a video in Totem my system hangs after not more than a couple of minutes. Moving the Totem window when playing video even seems to invoke a system hang. Some of you solved it apparantly by using a different kernel. But when willl we get a real solution/ fix for Ubuntu? This bug still doesn't have any importance, nor has it been assigned to someone. Bug fixing seems to become 'Redmondish' in Ubuntu these days. Or perhaps we must wait for the next kernel-update and hope our problem will be solved??! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187 Title: ubuntu 12.04 64bit completely freezes frequently To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/993187/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 64bit completely freezes frequently
Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x / AR542x Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01) Network adaptor seems to play a role with this bug. Without the network controller activated my system seems stable, but as soon as a switch on my network my system reacts differently: when starting Firefox my mouse pointer freezes a couple of seconds, but it doesn't when my network controller is switched off. Screen flashes sometimes (with network off screen is normal) etc. Seems that the Atheros driver somehow interferes with Xorg and/or Compiz. Do others also have atheros network adaptors? Can you also try to disable your Atheros card? I have somewhere a USB network adaptor, but can't find it. As soon as I find it, I will try if my system is stable with this network adaptor. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 64bit completely freezes frequently
Yesterday I did test run Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit from CD without any updates or closed source drivers. That went perfectly well: no hanging system, good performance. I'd love to install 12.04 32 bit and see how it does after taking the closed source nvidia drivers and updates, but I'm affraid I have an completely useless system once again. Problems with 64 bit version were also not there when test driving it from CD as far as I can remember. Has anybody tried to test his/her system with a clean install without updates and then adding the updates one by one? This could track down which update breaks 12.04 (if it is related to updates installed after installation as I suspect). If we know which update breaks Ubuntu it should be a bit easier to track down the problem!? Unfortunately I will not be able to test this in the coming 4 to 5 days. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 64bit completely freezes frequently
@ Norm. That's bad. I wanted to try the 32 bit version as I encounter the freezes with the 64 bit version. But if the 32 bit version does the same than that's no way out. Did you try the 64 bit version as well? It's necessary for the solution of this bug to know if both versions (64 and 32 bit) have this bug. I will probably try the 32 bit version as live version and test if it does have the same lock ups. If not I will install it and test it further. I would still love to use Ubuntu 12.04 and I don't mind to use the 32 bit version as the 64 bit doesn't really have any direct advantages for me. Strange that the importance of the bug is still undecided and has not yet been assigned to anyone. 25 users that take the trouble to report this bug must imply that there are at least hundreds, if not thousands of users running into trouble with this bug. And this bug is a real show stopper as it completely freezes the system! I ask my self what the developers are doing? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 64bit completely freezes frequently
After a large update yesterday including Compiz I hoped we would have some solution. Nope. My system still randomly freezes and my screen flashes like a strobe light in the discotheque sometimes. What really bothers me is that if you google you see that lots and lots of Pangolin users suffer from this bug (over 200.000 hits) yet this bug hasn't been assigned yet. Solution to be far far away this probably means, or we must hope that some update will bring the solution accidentily. If this is the way Ubuntu works these days, I'd rather spent a hundred bucks and get that so called crappy Windows 7: it at least doesn't freeze a twenty or thirty time a day. Or I will move away to another Linux distro that takes it's users a bit more serious. For now to have a working system I will probably downgrade to 11.10. I think it's mainly due to the fact that Ubuntu has been moving away from mainstream development with Unity and multiple monitor support. Don't get me wrong: I like the Unity concept and I also hope for a good multiple monitor solution for Linux, but I'd rather see efforts bundled instead of forked. For now: please please please developers dive into this nasty bug. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 64bit completely freezes frequently
Hi, I also have these random freezes (Pangolin 64 bit on a Acer 5720 laptop with Nvidia Graphics and the restricted / Closed source Nvidia driver installed). I have noticed though that it is 'only' the screenoutput that freezes/ comes to a halt. Yes, the mouse cursor still moves, but nothing else seems to happen. But as I was copying lots of files and my screen freezed I did not touch my system until I was confident that the copy process should be ready: in fact the control leds of my HD worked! and my Wifi indicator also worked (I was also downloading a file). After a while (led of HD and Wifi returned to idle) I switched off my system and rebooted the system. The files were copied correctly and my download was saved properly in my downloads directory. I have also noticed that starting any browser (Firefox / Chrome) will hang the system more quickly. I have also noticed that other 'screen- intensive' software like e.g. shotwell or any fotoviewer will cause the system to hang if used heavily. This bug seems to be highly related to screen output and apparantly nothing else. As Pdparo reports this on AMD Radeon as well (and even without the closed source driver installed) it is most likely not a problem directly caused by those drivers. I have noticed that my screens sometimes 'flashes' (on/off, but then very very fast) as it seems to refresh the screen. If you google this subject you will find lots of posts in forums as well: this seems to be a huge issue! [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 682466] [NEW] Menus require mousing over twice before popup appears
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I'm assuming this is an XORG issue, but I could be completely wrong. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 553415] Re: mouse trapped in box for Open Motif
I would very much appreciate an update on the backport to 10.04 as well. We're currently running a custom-patched X server on 2 workstations, but it's basically preventing a company-wide rollout of 10.04 so far. We intend to upgrade to 10.04 and stay there until the next LTS release. If this fix will NOT be backported anytime soon, could we get a confirmation of that? -- mouse trapped in box for Open Motif https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/553415 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 553415] Re: mouse trapped in box for Open Motif
I something going to happen with this bug, and has it been filed for the x.org package properly? It's not related to the nvidia driver, but to the xorg package. The fix is to rebuild the xorg package xorg-xserver-base with the patch as discussed on the xorg upstream bug. I obtained the patch through here: http://lists.x.org/archives/xorg-devel/2010-February/005845.html (see attachments) rebuilt with - aptitude source xorg-xserver-base - prepared package according to http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/rebuilding-ubuntu-debian-linux-binary-package/ - applied patch manually (didn't pick it up automatically, but that's due to my lack of experience with debian source packages) - built packages - installed with dpkg -i This is a critical bug for anybody using motif applications (nedit and plenty of others). It would be nice if the patch could be reviewed and applied in an update quickly - it's preventing us from upgrading the office to 10.04 at the moment.
