[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1874567] [NEW] Secondary (rotated) monitor configuration is not applied correctly in gnome settings

2020-04-23 Thread Matt Austin
Public bug reported:

I have two monitors, with the secondary one rotated in a portrait
orientation. Using the nvidia 440 drivers, the orientation is not
applied when configuring in gnome settings (the displays go blank for a
second, and then reappear in landscape orientation).

Using nvidia settings, I can set the monitor rotation and offset
correctly, however these settings do not persist on next boot (even when
selecting to save to xorg.conf).

When using the nouveau drivers, the orientation is applied correctly in gnome
settings, and is persisted.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1846398] Re: Fractional scaling has significant visible tearing in Xorg sessions

2019-12-07 Thread Matt Austin
Thanks for the feedback, but I don't believe I am using fractional
scaling. My scaling is set to 100%, but I have changed the font scaling
to 1.25.

If I set font scaling to 1.0, then I see the same tearing.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1849214] Re: "nvidia on-demand" mode does not support external displays

2019-11-13 Thread Matt W
After some more research I found out that this is actually due to an
unimpelmented feature in Nvidia's drivers.

On this model of laptop, the video output ports all connect directly to
the discrete Nvidia GPU, and Nvidia's drivers do not yet support the GPU
being used as a sink from the integrated GPU and piping the integrated
GPU's output to a display.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1839856] Re: Screen resolution on external monitor won't go above 2560 x 1080

2019-09-18 Thread Matt White
I went back pretty far, into the 4.x versions, and still had the same
results, so I'm guessing this isn't kernel-related. Any suggestion on
what else to try?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1839856] [NEW] Screen resolution on external monitor won't go above 2560 x 1080

2019-08-12 Thread Matt White
Public bug reported:

I have an external monitor capable of 3440 x 1440. I am using a Thinkpad
T480s. Up until about 2 weeks ago, I could set the resolution of the
monitor to 3440 x 1440 just fine. Now when I try, the screen goes black
and I have to revert to a lower resolution. The highest it will go now
is 2560 x 1080. Lower resolutions work fine as well.

I have built all 4.15.x releases and 4.16rc from source kernel.org and
confirm nvivia-304 will not build. Am looking at learning how to install
patch. This should be reported to kernel.org as well

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1597447] Re: vmmouse not functional (mouse pointer stuck, no auto-grab/ungrab) under Workstation 12 Player

2016-06-29 Thread Matt Sealey
Alternatively installing xserver-xorg-input-libinput seems to supercede
vmmouse and give me mouse back without uninstalling vmmouse itself. That
actually matches my experience with Fedora 23 in the past few days..

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1597447] Re: vmmouse not functional (mouse pointer stuck, no auto-grab/ungrab) under Workstation 12 Player

2016-06-29 Thread Matt Sealey
Installed VM is Ubuntu 16.04 x86-64 (UEFI) and the host is Windows 7
64-bit.

Are we missing a udev rule? Xorg log seems to report that the input1 or
mouse1 device is being ignored since no driver is specified. The current
udev rule only seems to match against "i8042 AUX port".

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1597447] [NEW] vmmouse not functional (mouse pointer stuck, no auto-grab/ungrab) under Workstation 12 Player

2016-06-29 Thread Matt Sealey
Public bug reported:

Having xserver-xorg-input-vmmouse installed in my virtual machine sticks
the mouse pointer to the middle of the screen.

Tried to use ubuntu-bug to report this, but since it relies on Firefox
(and there's no mouse..) it is frustratingly difficult to achieve.

Uninstalling xserver-xorg-input-vmmouse solves the stuck mouse problem
but we lose the grab/ungrab functionality.

Greetings retracing service! I tried to look at the other bug but can
not find the duplicate bug you reference. The link is dead, and when I
try to search that bug number in bugs.launchpad.net I do not find it.

Since I can not see the other bug I can not verify that it is correct.
Can someone please point me to the correct bug or tell me why I can not
see it?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1530500] [NEW] Desktop manager crashes to login screen without warning

2016-01-01 Thread Matt Restko
Public bug reported:

I would be happy to try to acquire more information to help track this
problem down but I do not know what to do on my own so I would need
directions.

This problem first started occurring after I upgraded to 15.10 and has
been happening once every few days since then. The system will without
warning crash to a console-looking screen which shows some of the
typical startup screen notifications about different services coming up
etc. The system automatically then goes back to the login screen after
about 10 seconds without user intervention. I log in and it seems that
everything works fine but anything I was working on is lost and there is
an error notification waiting for me.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1449560] Re: Cannot login with Nvidia Optimus hardware installed(Ubuntu 15.04)

2015-08-18 Thread Matt C
I have tried Aaron's patches myself and they do make the Failed to
claim DRM device. error messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log disappear and
the log looks like the NVIDIA driver is working fine, but I still boot
to a black screen.

So there is either another problem, or those patches don't quite fix
this issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1449560] Re: Cannot login with Nvidia Optimus hardware installed(Ubuntu 15.04)

2015-08-17 Thread Matt
I have the same problem and I always thought it was the NVIDIA drivers
themselves.

Tried all the newer versions from xorg-edgers, as well as the latest
upstream Linux kernels (4.x+) and none of it helped.

Finally came across the NVIDIA devtalk post linked in the description of
this bug report and then found this bug report itself.

The workaround mentioned by Rene works for me.

I want to help fix this, but I have no idea where to start.
So I'm just going to start with the X.org dev patch that Aaron made and maybe
get in contact with him.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1316873] Re: Left mouse button stops working

2015-08-11 Thread Matt Chapman
I filed a new report as requested.

Also, a tip to others suffering this bug -- some of the time, I can
resolve this without restarting Xorg by simply switching to another
console (e.g., CTRL-ALT-F2) and then waiting a moment, then switching
back to the Xorg Console (ALT-F7).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1099115] Re: Can't change brightness while screen is locked

2014-04-29 Thread Matt Rae
Is this a usability issue?

I'd like to be able to turn off the backlight to listen to music in the
dark. When I come back to turn the brightness up, the screen is locked
and the brightness control doesn't work. I have to blindly enter in my
password (yikes?). If I didn't realize that the screen was locked a
reset would be the only fix. That doesn't seem very user friendly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1313399] [NEW] nouveau GPU crash when launching Amazon app

2014-04-27 Thread Matt Van Gundy
Public bug reported:

I believe this crash is another instance of bug #1285713, but apport
encouraged me to file a new bug rather than add information to the
existing bug, so here it is.

With a default install of 14.04 Trusty, every time I launch the Amazon
App from the Unity toolbar the screen freezes, the keyboard becomes
unresponsive, and eventually portions of the screen disaapear.

Over a serial console, I see the following kernel error messages get logged:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1308126] [NEW] [xorg-edgers] When enabling xorg-edgers fresh X crack ppa apt get dist-upgrade wants to remove libsdl2, libwayland-egl1-mesa

2014-04-15 Thread matt davis
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 14.04. I have tried to enable xorg-edgers fresh X crack ppa for
the latest Nvidia proprietary drivers. After apt-get update and apt-get
dist-upgrade the latest mesa 10.2 git packages are pulled in which
apparently requires the removal of libwayland-egl1-mesa which libsdl2
depends on. This also means the removal of anything that depends on
libsdl2 which in my case are the game console emulators dolphin-emu and
pcsxr.

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  dolphin-emu-master libsdl2-2.0-0 libwayland-egl1-mesa
libwayland-egl1-mesa:i386 pcsxr pcsxr-spu-sdl
The following packages will be upgraded:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1308317] [NEW] applications in full-screen do not align properly after minimization

2014-04-15 Thread Matt
Public bug reported:

This is a problem with mouse-clicking sections of the firefox window
that are unresponsive.

I'll try to describe the problem. Firefox is open and set to
fullscreen/maximize. You press the minimize button to send Firefox to
the launcher. After opening firefox, by clicking on the launcher icon,
firefox returns to fullscreen/maximize and appears normal. However, the
tabs at the top are unclickable. The mouse button is an I-beam - or
text-editing cursor - instead of a pointer when hovering over the tabs.
Clicking changes the position of the I-beam in the text url below. This
happens without regard to which programs are open, or whether or not
anything else is open. There seems to be a 50/50 chance of clicking
firefox from the launch pad, and having this happen.

It seems as though the firefox window is adjusting to maximize and leave
room for the menubar at the top, but the GUI does not anticipate the
menu bar. There is about a 10 pixel discrepancy between where the mouse
points, and where it registers.

This happens to ALL applications set to full-screen mode after
minimization.

This video should help shed light on the problem:
http://tinypic.com/r/2jfcepi/8

I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 beta.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1299499] Re: kwin crashes on desktop startup with wobbly windows enabled

2014-04-04 Thread Matt Ruffalo
I had reverted to a btrfs snapshot once I saw KWin crash, so this
morning I added the PPA and did an aptitude full-upgrade. This updated
my kernel to 3.13.0-22 (as well as ~500MB of other stuff) and I am very
happy to say that KWin is working perfectly.

Thank you very much, Timo!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1299499] Re: kwin crashes on desktop startup with wobbly windows enabled

2014-04-01 Thread Matt Ruffalo
Hmm, I guess the answer to (all?) Intel video hardware is no.

I get perfectly consistent KWin crashes on a machine with a Intel
Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c),
even after add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers; aptitude update;
aptitude full-upgrade; reboot.

No crashes on a machine with a Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v2/3rd
Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09) though.

This bug has been found to be in the ACPI setup of my motherboard (I
believe).

I solved the issue by passing the noirqpoll kernel option

2014-03-06 Thread Matt Bunt
Tried 3.14.0-031400rc5-generic mainline kernel but the bug is still
happening.

It crashes sometimes before sometimes after modesetting but always
before plymouth splash screen (purple ubuntu screen).

I don't know what else to do to troubleshoot this problem. But I'll keep
working on it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1284296] [NEW] screen blanks (as if computer is off) after grub but only sometimes

2014-02-24 Thread Matt Bunt
Public bug reported:

First of all, I appologize if I filed this bug wrong, this is my first
time. I am also not 100% sure it is Xorg related, but that seemed the
most appropriate choice when I was anwsering the questions in the
ubuntu-bug utility.

$ cat /proc/version_signature
Ubuntu 3.13.0-12.32-generic 3.13.4
$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu Trusty Tahr (development branch)
Release:14.04

I originally tried to install 13.10 but had this intermittent blank
screen problem so I hoped 14.04 would have a fix but it did not and now
I'm troubleshooting in 14.04.

The problem is intermittently after I select ubuntu from grub my screen
will blank (no signal) as if my computer were off. Here is a link to my
forum post discussing the problem and what I've done to try to resolve
it http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2207624. I'm not sure if the
computer has crashed or its simply not outputing video, but the only way
to recover is to do a hard restart and cross my fingers that it wont
happen next time.

I know there are many bugs about blank screens, but this one seems to be
unique in that it happens seemingly at random (race condition?).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 666604] Re: Touchscreen unusual in multi-head system

2014-01-27 Thread matt
Bug is reproducable on current ubuntu development release!
It is also present on Kubuntu 13.10, which is what I work with at the moment.

I think this bug should get some priority, since touchscreens are pretty
common these days. The current state just makes the touchscreen of my
laptop useless, as soon as I attach an external screen an switch to
dualhead...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1273081] [NEW] Xorg crash

2014-01-26 Thread Matt Della
Public bug reported:

While viewing an svg I made in the stock photo viewer (eye of gnome), I
zoomed in to about 2000 percent (the max), at which point the image
became fully transparent, and displayed the grey and white checkerboard.
My screen then went black for some time and returned to the login
screen. After logging in, my fans turned on, and Apport began consuming
many gigabytes of RAM, as well as 100 percent of one cpu. I killed it
and everything returned to normal.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1222718] Re: Using fglrx, chromium tabs not displaying titles

2013-11-06 Thread Matt Giuca
I am happy to report that the workaround has been merged into Chromium
31. Tabs should display titles again from Chromium 31 onwards -- please
report on http://crbug.com/123104 if there are still problems after 31.

As a side effect, users upgrading to Chromium 31 will have a missing
fade effect on the right side of the tab (http://crbug.com/315915), but
this should be fixed when Chromium 32 comes out.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1222718] Re: Using fglrx, chromium tabs not displaying titles

2013-10-29 Thread Matt Giuca
Update from Chromium's side: I have a workaround for this issue
(tracking on this bug http://crbug.com/123104). I am hoping we can get
the fix out with Chromium 31, but I can't make any promises at this
stage (since we are very late in the Chromium 31 release process). But
it will definitely be fixed for Chromium 32.

Note that I have not been able to address the root issue. I'm assuming
there's a new bug in Cairo but I don't know what is causing this -- it
is something to do with the subtle fade effect on the right side of the
tab text. My quick-and-dirty workaround for Chromium 31 simply disables
the fade effect, and my full fix for Chromium 32 switches to a different
text rendering engine for tab titles.

2013-09-05 Thread Matt Rogers
Same, still seeing it with exact symptoms and resolution (albeit archaic
and untrustworthy, not to mention an eyebrow raiser to an employer as
stated above).

Ubuntu 13.04 (64-bit)
Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500 (x3 different ones do the same thing.
Purple, Black Red in case you care)
AMD Phenom II x4 965 CPU
12Gb DDR3 RAM
AMD Radeon HD 5700 Graphics

Not sure what else could matter.

I use the same port, different ports... Even using USB3 (blue in the
rear by the 2.0 plugs) or USB1.1 (front) is the same result.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-02-19 Thread Matt C
I notice that this is filed under package “xserver-xorg-video-intel” yet
people report issues on various graphics cards. Mine is AMD chipset with
VGA controller Radeon AMD nee ATI RS880 [Radeon HD 4200].

Will this reduce visibility to those concerned with the radeon driver?

2013-02-19 Thread Matt C
Re. #713 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/993187/comments/713

I have ran for 24 hours on 12.04.1 with LTS Enablement stack from
Quantal installed (with kernel 3.5.0-23-generic and X.Org X Server
1.13.0 / 2:1.13.0-0ubuntu6.1~precise2).

Although the OS and graphics run smoother in 3.5 kernel, I just had a
crash. Different message but similar symptoms. Black and white dump
screen showing Kernel Bug message followed a few seconds later by
corrupt graphics on screen and a need to Emergency Sync + Reboot -
although system IS responsive to Num Lock this time, it's not entirely a
hard lock but as Ctrl+Alt+F1 doesn't work to get to a console it might
as well be.

This time error is:

Kernel Bug at slub.c Invalid Opcode

At the time I was copying backup data to a removable disk across SSH and
working in Unity as normal.

Trying Kernel 3.8 next, as per suggestion from Shayne on comment #673:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-02-19 Thread Matt C
A 3.8 kernel did not appear to be compatible with 12.04.1... Although it booted
to the login screen there was:
  (1) No grub menu, (2) No boot screen just purple, (3) When plugging in a USB
keyboard (none connected initially), nothing happens, (4) No network. I had to
boot into rescue media and restore the previous Kernel 3.5.

This comment is just in case anyone else having graphics stability
problems over the past 1-2 months is following this same path I am, on a
quest to restore desktop stability with an AMD/radeon chipset.

I just installed some new bugfixes to the 3.5 kernel from proposed.
There are a few radeon bugfixes listed in the changelog. I Fingers
crossed.

This may be my last post on this bug, as it has been marked as (yet
another) Won't Fix.

This past 6 months has been very poor for stability of both for my Ubuntu
Server and Ubuntu Desktop installations.
Then there is 12.10, which I downgraded immediately to 12.04 upon encountering
the Amazon lens, several software crashes and other gems.

I can't get through a single working day without some form of Ubuntu
crash. Yet my laptop at home is stable.

I think it's time to review Won't Fix policy. Yes, this bug has become
a hodge-podge. It is also High + Critical severity and a serious
stability issue. I would never close a serious system usability bug
like this as Won't Fix.

I bet many of the 428 users who have marked themselves as affected by
this bug would be willing to run whatever diagnostic steps the
developers need.

The reason why many posts are so vague could be because this is an
unrecoverable random crash, which leaves no logs to post.

2013-02-18 Thread Matt C
@slucas1979 : I will try Kernel 3.8. Thanks for the tip.

fglrx radeon driver is more stable more often but has it's own issues and
crashes. Overall is no better. Back to open source driver.
trying 3.8 kernel from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.8-rc7-raring/ as there is
mention of benefits for ATI chipset users.

(Mine is: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RS880 [Radeon HD 4200])

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-02-18 Thread Matt C
Woohoo! For 12.04.1 LTS users with constant crash problems as described here
and on-board ATI/AMD/Radeon graphics cards, this looks promising:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack
If you want the 3.5 kernel and xorg packages from 12.04.2 made available in LTS
for 'hardware enablement' purposes run:
 sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-quantal xserver-xorg-lts-quantal

Upgrading mine. Will report success here.
