Re: document recovery
Usually configuring openoffice the right way will help you prevent this. If you enable auto-save it will force you to save it as you go along. Also a backup directory should be configured to have an alternative copy that you can go if things happen to your Document folder. RE: document recovery
Alan (below) and Alexandro (previous message) offer great advice on how to locate a recoverable version of a document. There are also practices and options for limiting the risk of document loss in the future. For more specific advice on your immediate problem, there needs to be more information on how the document seems to have vanished. What operating system are you using, what version of Apache OpenOffice are you using, and how/where had you expected to find the document? Was there any unusual incident when you were last using the document? Also, if you open Apache OpenOffice directly, without opening a document, notice there is a pull-down (a little pointer) next to the Open... icon of a file folder. This will list the most-recent document you have been working with, including their locations on your machine. If you click on the folder icon instead, OpenOffice will open the last folder you were working on documents in. Inside applications, you can see that list in the File - Recent Documents menu selection. If any of the suggestions (above and below) work for you, please report that so there will be more knowledge on dealing with this kind of situation. - Dennis PS: You have reached a public mailing list on which volunteers contribute to questions from other users like themselves. Document Recovery Issue
I've checked in before with screen reader accessibility questions, and the problem that has popped up is aggravated by that. I have a little usable vision, which enables me to do only limited tasks with Open Office. Last night I opened a document in Writer. Since I couldn't read it with my screen reader, I attempted to copy the text into Notepad. For some reason, the text didn't copy. I can't remember what happened when I closed the Writer document, but now when I open any Open Office application, I get a message about document recovery. I've deleted the document I was trying to copy from. It's gone from Recycle bin deliberately as well. My screen resolution isn't set for optimal use with Open Office, so I can't see buttons at the bottom of the screen that shows the message about document recovery. However, I've figured out that by striking S, then N, I can open up the document or spread sheet I'm actually trying to work with. That led to other problems this morning. I tried to print out a spread sheet so I could read it with magnification apart from the computer, but I couldn't get it to print at all. I couldn't tab to whatever control I needed to make it work. I don't know how much of this is related to my lack of ability to access the programs with my screen reader, but is it necessary to uninstall and reinstall to resolve any of this? I'll see what I can do to make that work when I get the document recovery issue resolved. When I open the Open Office icon, I have to go through the steps (S N) as described before. Then it opens Writer, not the panel that lets me choose the program I want. By the way, I got 4 copies of your message. My email client had a spaz attack and sent it twice to both email addresses --ie yours and that of the mailing list! Apologies for that. I'm not really up-to-date with the Windows operating system, so I hope others will step in with suggestions for your document recovery issue. If you have a copy of the original .zip/compressed archive with the program, seems to me it wouldn't hurt to uninstall and do a clean install. Hope you can find a quick and good fix! :-) marina --- Italy or Australia MacBook Pro 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5, OS X 10.9.5 MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, OS X 10.6.8 www.mtadiello.com@martadiello - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.apache.org
Document Recovery Issue
This follows up on my earlier inquiry about the message I was getting every time I tried to start Open Office, which referred to a document recovery failure. It came about as a result of a crash, and the error reporting feature apparently doesn't work. In doing a little research, I found that it was necessary to change my user profile. Uninstalling and reinstalling wouldn't have worked. The article I found is at https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?p=58403#p58403 Look under the title Setting the user profile. I've been able to successfully fix the problem. What I don't know is whether I should delete the file now named user.old . And I don't know if I should try copying sub folders into the new User folder to see which one was causing the problem. Maybe I'll leave well enough alone for now. Very advanced users may want to copy some of their customizations from the old profile to the new one, but they are not completely independent, so if you don't know the internal details of a user profile I would simply rely on the new profile only, and delete the old one.
