You can download your free copy of the latest version of OpenOffice here:

http://www.openoffice.org

It's absolutely free of charge. There are no hidden costs or catches. You
don't need to pay anyone for it, ever.

Hello,

Normally, odt saved in 2.1 can be opened without problem in another 2.xversion.

Are both your copies (HD and email) corrupted?
Can you put the odt on a server where we can download it from to
examine it (if it isn't too confidential)? Try
http://www.yousendit.com or http://www.mytempdir.com or such like.

It sounds like you may need to run the Windows Updater program to update your

[users] Improvements in OpenOffice

2007-10-27 Thread Lennart

I see a need for some improvements in OpenOffice and wonder where I can direct
my sugestions so the developers will get it. If someone knows?
For example, to have the possibility of having a different header on the first
page of a chapter (within one and the same pagestyle, without having to include
an extra page style just for that.) In Softmaker's Textmaker 2008 this
possibility has been added, and they make it great news. And it is already in
MS Word (of course.)
Another function would be, being able to globally change marigins in a document
with several chapters (page styles.)
So, where can I direct my suggestions so the developers will include it in OO?
It will never be a REAL success without these functions.

They can indeed. In many cases the name of a Free Software project is the only
part of it that you can't fork. (Trademarks and all that.)

It's not illegal. The LGPL allows anyone to do just that. They do have to
provide the source code, or a written offer to provide the same.

It would be nice if they did, but I wouldn't hold my breath "expecting it",
were I you.

Again, they do have to provide or offer the source code as part of their
product.

Cosmi, eh... There used to be a Cosmi that published "bargain bin"
software for the Commodore 64. One of their best games was a helicopter
simulation called Super Huey. In fact, I still play it occasionally.

This makes no sense whatsoever in the context of the OpenOffice.org

[users] still not spell checking

2007-10-27 Thread ocribin
Dan asked me
what is happening when you try
to spell check a word.
Try this:
1) Open Writer
2) Misspell a word
3) Click on the word so that the cursor in in it
4) Format > Character
5) Click the Font tab
What is listed under Language? Is it the correct language? Does it
have a tick with an "abc" in front of it?
When I checked, the language was "English(Eire), and there is no tick with
an "ABC". So I switched to English (UK), and the red line indicating an
error appeared under the word. However, other words remained the same, and
when I selected them they still came up with the english (Eire) setting.
How do I se openoffice to spellcheck each document without having to change
settings each time? This happened AFTER I downloaded another english
dictionary (English(Canada)), as I couldn't find one that said English(UK)
or English (Eire). I just want to be able to type and have the word
processor check as I go along. I'm sure it's dead easy, but i'm missing
something simple.
Thanks,
Colm

[users] Selling Open Office software

2007-10-27 Thread T.T.I. Your Way2eBay

I am using version 2,3.0 of OpenOffice.org. My problem is a question:

OK, I want or need to know if the Open Office software that everyone can
download for FREE on the Open Office web site can be sold on eBay as a
download. In the meaning of being distributed as a download and sold as a
download link.

The reason I ask this question is that I see so many people selling a link to
download what is Free to do at the Open Office web site. I do know that Open
Office can be sold by way of a CD or a DVD.

I just do not think it is right that many are selling your software as a
download that you always have offered for Free.

Please reply so I may follow up on this at eBay.

Re: [users] Open MSOffice docs in IE with OO ActiveX

2007-10-27 Thread Philippe Zwaenepoel
Hi James,

I am still not convinced this is a windows related problem. There is indeed a
checkbox 'always use this app', it was by default checked (as I have set OO as
default app for MS Office docs in windows).
The problem is not that it does not recognize OpenOffice as the default app to
open these documents. The problem is that it should open in the same window of
IE.

In attachment a screenhot when opening an ODT file and when opening a DOC file.
You will see that the ODT file is nicely openend in the window of IE, but not
the DOC file.

Thanks,
Philippe

Hi James,

Yes indeed, all MS Office files are associated to OpenOffice 2.3, see
screenshot in attachment. The pop up I receive after

clicking on a *.doc link in IE is one that asks to open the doc in
OpenOffice.

I looked into the code of the ActiveX, in the so_activex.cpp file. I don't
extactly know if this could be the issue but starting from line 400

(this is the link to the source code
http://www.koders.com/cpp/fidAC2258223FD00A0152B7FF2C280F5996004295B8.aspx)

I see a mime type association to MS Office applications for MS Office file
extensions.

Here the procedure I followed to investigate this obstacle:

- Creation of an HTML file containing 2 links, one to an *.odt file, the
other to a *.doc file

- I associated the doc filetype (and othe MS Office filetypes) to
OpenOffice 2.3

- The ActiveX component has been installed together with the installation
of OpenOffice 2.3

- When opening the *.odt file from the HTML in IE, it opens in IE

- When opening the *.doc file from the HMTL page in IE, it provides a popup
to open the document in OpenOffice

This is definitely an issue with Windows and not OpenOffice. When you get
that popup, is there a check box to always use that app? If so, check it and
you should be OK.

[users] disappearing fontwork under Vista and other glitches

2007-10-27 Thread Colin Stuart
Some problems in order of priority for my purposes:

1. I am using OO 2.3 under Windows Vista Home Premium on an Acer AM5620-E1204A.
When I insert a fontwork "style" from the gallery into Writer (or anywhere)
and attempt to change its shape (fontwork shape button) the inserted fontwork
"style" disappears. The handles remain but they too disappear when one attempts
to select them. Annoying.

2. I am using an Epson Perfection 1250 scanner with OOWriter on the system
above. When attempting to insert a picture (using OOWriter
"Insert-picture-scan" dropdown) from the scanner with the Twain facility
provided by Epson (latest download for Vista), scanning fails and Writer
freezes. I have to go to Windows Task Manager to close OOWriter. When I do a
stand-alone scan and save the scanned file to the desktop, it can then be
inserted with no problem. Cumbersome.

3. I installed the Gallery extension downloaded from the site linked to the OO
site. All of the vector graphics will drag and drop or copy and paste into
OOWriter. The photos in the gallery, most of which I think are jpg, simply
cannot be dragged or pasted into Writer. Strange.

Keep up the good work. I love OO.
Colin Stuart

P.S. (You don't really need to know the following but here it is anyway) I
wouldn't be using Vista, but the power supply failed on my wonderful Ubuntu P4
thingy and there is some difficulty in finding a replacement. I tried
installing Ubuntu on this Acer machine and got royally out of my depth with
partitioning. In the world beyond GUI and clear instructions I am at a total
loss. I get slightly paranoid about the problems noted above and suspect
Microsoft of inserting all kinds of little landmines to make things difficult
for any software outside their own, and especially for OO. .docx feeds my
paranoia: what plans/strategy do you folks have to deal with it? How do I cope
if .docx takes over the world?

[users] Installing Java when installing Open Office

2007-10-27 Thread David Simpson
I believe that I have the most current version of Java. I checked the
Add-Remove Programs listing & this is what I have:

Java 6 Update 2
Java 6 Update 3
Java SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

I downloaded version 2.3.0.

When I install Open Office, will the installer install an older version of Java
or not install Java at all? Does the install program check to see if Java is
installed & what version? This is why I'm hesitant to install Open Office,
although, I'll admit, I'm anxious to try it out.

Thank you.

David

[users] product distribution by others

2007-10-27 Thread Quark496
Hi everyone,

I have been using OpenOffice for a couple years now, and truly love it. It
is a great replacement for ms Office, and I am delighted to find things I
need in the menus listings where I expect them to be.

As happy as I am with your product, I am still a very curious sort of person
and am interested in trying other things, so I purchased a product recently
called "Perfect Pro Office System 2007". On the box, they mention the names
of the office compatible software in their package: Write, Calc, Impress,
etc. Sound familiar? Naturally, I searched over the entire box very
carefully,
and OpenOffice.org was never mentioned. It irked me that they used the same
names as you guys do, but then I guessed that products which are available
freely on the web according to a general public license probably do not
copyright the product names.

Despite my concern about the identical names, I attempted to install the
office component of the package. Imagine my surprise when nothing seemed to
happen. I then opened the CD and discovered, much to my dismay, that "Perfect
Pro Office" IS OpenOffice.org with the addition of a couple new goodies.
Aren't the people at Cosmi required to mention on the package that they are
actually supplying OpenOffice.org under their own banner? The name is
mentioned
absolutely NOWHERE on the package or inside the box either, for that matter.
Can they do that? Clearly the implication is that the software inside the
box is THEIR material when, in fact, it is not their property. If this is not
illegal, it is certainly unethical.

It does lead to an interesting question: Since Cosmi is selling
OpenOffice.org under their own banner, should we expect them to support the
product in
the future with updates to the community at large? And second, is there
something that can be done to protest this clear abuse of the general public
license, to force Cosmi to acknowledge this fact? (There is a new version of
the
software on the shelves at Fry's Electronics, and I don't believe that the new
package made any mention of the use of OpenOffice.org either.)

I guess what bothers me most about this is that Cosmi is clearly making
money off of the fact that they are "selling" an MS Office compatible product,
as
that is the product stressed most on the package (the items are highlighted
in red on the back of the box). The box is typical of modern software
distributions with a fold-open cover. Inside the cover it says, "With Perfect
Pro
Office System(tm) you will create professional-looking business documents,
instant databases, eye-catching presentations, full-featured
spreadsheets...even make, edit or enhance your own images!" But in fact, they
are simply
describing OpenOffice.org in all of the descriptions that follow. So how much
work did Cosmi actually perform in developing the products on the 4 CD's
inside
their box?

Have a good "Open" day!

Sincerely,
Bob Klimaszewski

If OOo locale is set to "default", then OOo should honour the OS
locale settings.
If the OOo is not set to "default", then OOo should use whatever the
internal (OOo) settings are.

IIRC, OOo offers support for more locales than WinXP does.

To add decimals, you have to have a different format code for each number of

Gordon's post of July 5th, 2005. I confirmed how to add decimals and
identified the 100 million limit.

I don't know Calc very well but it seems to me that if regular expressions
can be used in format codes there might be a way to build the format code so
it understands there needs to be a repeating pattern of 00, for numbers
greater than 99,999. e.g. 1,00,000; 1,00,00,000; etc.

In Windows (XP Pro, at least) there are Control Panel options to set the
"digit grouping" for numbers and currency, separately, to the pattern
the OP requires. However, OpenOffice 2.2 takes no notice of these
settings. Is this a bug? Should not OO honour the OS's locale settings?
I haven't tried in OO 2.3 because I haven't downloaded it yet.

Does anyone have a Writer (.odt) template (.ott) for a tri-fold-folded-in-half?
That is, for document made by folding an A4/letterhead sheet in half,
*then* into thirds, with the result of 6 little (2.85x3.67") "pages"?

Or, alternatively, for a half-letterhead (5.5x8.5") piece of cardstock,
folded into thirds, with three of those little pages *on each side*?

I had the same error message when I tried to install openoffice. I
discovered that the file mscoree.dll (C:/Windows/system32/) was the culprit.
I changed the name of the file to mscoreebak.dll and the install then went

it worked but it did.
I hope this helps

Joe explained it.

Basically date and time is really the same thing. The date/time on
the computer is is set/watched/stamped based on a date/time from a
starting point in the distant past (I think around 1900 or earlier
for *nix and later for Windows). Going back to the earlier example
21:03 marks a point in time that is every 24 hours and can be past,
present and future. Adding the date then says the time stamp is
only for one time period at that minute and not all of them past,
present and future.

In the world we have dates and time for recording the movement of
something from a starting point. We use time on a daily interval
without realizing that the time we are talking about isn't just
15:00 but it is 15:00 at 10/27/2007 UTC or 15:00 at 10/27/2007
UTC-* which is different from UTC. with the computer this short cut
that every one is used to using is ignored and recorded completely.

Because of the way Calc stores dates internally, as a real number where
the integer part represents the day (date) and the fractional part
represents the time (fraction of a day), every 'date' in Calc also
includes a time: 0:00.

I've read through the explanations and understand what you're saying. I
guess for me that leaves the question of why not create a UI artifice of
'read only' that would be understood by the average user? It seems the
effect could be achieved with signing but using different UI actions. I
don't believe the average user understands that signing would enable them to
detect if changes are made. However getting a Word document back that
doesn't prompt for the 'read only' password when opened makes it immediately
apparent that something has changed.

I've discovered the Writer interface has a visible indicator whether or not
a file is signed. It's in the message bar at the bottom of the application
window. For an unsigned document it is just an empty gray box. And signed or
unsigned it is tiny. Perhaps it could be made more prominent somehow and,
for unsigned documents, rather than being empty an appropriate status
message might be displayed.

I'm persisting with the idea, though it's now clear the name 'read only'
isn't appropriate, because of how I've seen the feature used with Word in
the office environments I've been in. Also it seemed the poster who wanted
to know how to do read only, and who got me started on this thread, was
really desperate to understand how to make read only happen in Writer. I
think at this point they believe they have no way of implementing 'read
only' when in fact there is a more robust feature available, signing.

However, I found the description of the cause of the problem
troubling: how can time zone calculations interfere with the
entry of a date?

As far as I can tell, Calc does not do any conversion of the date
(or time) as entered--all date/time values in Calc are stored and
displayed as local time.

So why is the time zone setting triggering these effects?

Maybe I misunderstood the developer's explanation.

Most apps that use the date or time use both because 21:03 is not as
specific as 21:03 05/12/06 The former is the exact minute of the
day of any day, any month, any year, but the later is the exact
minute of the day on a specific day, month and year. There is a
more technically correct way to say this. I will leave that to
someone else.

That makes sense, but I'm not sure it explains the situation that led to
the original post. That was a case of someone just entering a simple
date, not a date and a time. If one enters a date alone, does a time
somehow get tacked onto it, but not displayed? To me, that wouldn't make
a lot of sense. Or is there something I'm missing?

It is very unfortunate that Harry didn't communicate this result to 'users':

No.

I had not tried to use Oo since the bug was initiated. The other day I tried
to open a file and got the "what program" menu and I selected swriter for
the heck of it. It ran me through initialization and then into Writer. I
don't know what could have changed that would make it suddenly work

As far as I remember, I asked him, whether he tried to open an *.odt file,
but - looking back - there was no really reply ...
the main thing is, it's running now. ;-)

Two proposals @Scott:

(1) At first, adding file association e.g. 'ODT' (to swriter.exe of
your installation)
manually in menu 'folder options' (sorry, I don't have neither this
Vista nor English OS-UI)
of the 'Windows explorer' menu (or simlar menu of Vista).

(2) Then, as you remarked ...

My wife has the same brand laptop (Toshiba) as I.
Hers is an A205, mine an A215, both with Vista Home Premium,
and she was able to load OO 2.3 just fine.

... try as workarround:
Close OOo. ;-)
Copy the 'user folder' [..\AppData\Roaming\OpenOffice.org2\user] of your wife's
installation to your installation [..\AppData\Roaming\OpenOffice.org2\user] -
it should effectuate as having done the first initialization.
'Restart' OOo (please, try with all known possibillities and variatons)

Maybe it will work - but I don't want to raise false expectations ...
