I down loaded OOo2.4 and 2.4 is now the default to open saved email. I've tried to have Outlook Express as the default but when I click on the icon it just opens the program not the saved email. I have the XP operating system. Any ideas what is going on? I'm an old guy trying my best on the computer. Thanks, Bud

One specific thing I need to do is review a document someone has given me and without actually changing the content, simply label things and say Change this or This needs to say that This way when they read the document that I've added notes in, they will see those suggestions and be able to edit the changes in themselves. Any suggestions on how to easily do this? This does not answer your question directly - does OOo have an annotator -- but it may be relevant to your needs. I work in small group of dispersed sofware developers and writers. We exchange documents as PDF's, OOo can readily create a PDF, from any component - writer, calc, draw etc. We then use Tracker Software's PDFView to annotate the PDF with sticky notes and the like. I think Adobe have an annotator, but I believe the PDF has to created with Adobe PDF creation tools in order to use it.. One of us, not me, annotates in hand writing using a tablet. We prefer to annotate PDF's rather than the original document, whether it be Word or OOo, because of the version management problems inherent in editing the original form. Also annotating a PDF is universal, i.e. the document can come a design tool such as Visio or BOOUML or even your browser if you have a PDF printer installed, e.g. PDF Creator. Also has the advantage that the editor does not need the same tools as the writer. PDFViewer is freeware, there's a pro version now not sure what features it offers. I don't think PDFViewer is unique - i.e. there are other and possibly better tools that do a similar job. We all have large hi res and/or dual screens so we can readily look at the real document and the annotated one simultaneously. Have you looked in the OOo add ons, Writer's Tools may have something - which reminds me I have to get my instance working again. cheers phild - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Another way that is somewhat more successful is to create a default document and then save it as a template File | Templates | Save | My Templates and give the new template a name and click OK. Then make that template the default template File | Templates | Organise | select the template under My Templates | Commands | Set as default template However that only works when you create a new file under File | New | Text Document Or by simply starting Writer (swriter.exe) from a shortcut/icon. If you go to Windows Explorer (obviously only under Windows - I have no idea what the equivalent of this is on Linux or Mac) and go to File | New | OpenDocument Text to create a new document it will not only ignore any settings under Tools | Options | etc but will also ignore any default templates. This would appear to be a significant oversight. Neil This is an extremely unusual and cumbersome method of creating a new document and not one that many users would normally employ, but the document generated by this method does revert to the original Writer defaults, not to the user defined default template. I don't have time to pull up the source code and find out how the document is being generated from the Explorer menu. Re: [users] use of non-english spelling characters in creating data
Thank you kindly for the reply, and please bear with me, I did find understand the instructions for use of non-English spelling i Open Office - BUT, now I see that my original query would have been clearer had I used the terms symbols special characters My specific question relates to assigning shortcut keys to insert Latin Extended-A Polish letters directly from the keyboard in only one step, to avoid the cumbersome process of, for each letter, taking 4 steps by selecting Insert, then special characters, then choosing the character with the mouse, then input it in the document. For comparison, Microsoft Word, in its Insert menu, in addition to Special characters (of the like you have in OpenOffice) has a Symbols (non-english letters, distinguished there from Special Characters) option, allowing for the chosen letter to be assigned a key combination, eg. Alt+character from the standard qwerty keyboard (this method allows me uninterupted flow when typing in a non-english language). Can I achieve similar in OpenOffice? I did try to find it in OpenOffice, but perhaps I am missing something obvious . Hope this makes sense. I am having difficulty using this and go back to word and other programs because I have been unable to understand the operation and it is easier to use an old program than learn a new one, although I am always excited about using a new program. So, have you installed the dictionaries for the languages you want to use? FileWizardsInstall New Dictionaries. Then, for monoglot documents set the language you want in ToolsOptionsLanguage SettingsLanguages - either for all documents or for this document only. This is also where you can check what dictionaries you have installed: in the drop down list of possible languages, the relevant dictionary is only installed if the language has a little abc and a tick (check mark) by it. If the tick and abc are not there then you need to install that language's dictionary if you want to spell check in that language. For polyglot documents you need to read about Styles and create a set of styles for each language you want to use, or select the text and click the language button in the status bar at the bottom of the Writer window so that you can choose the language for the selected text. This last method, only available in the recently released version 2.4) is tedious if you write a lot of multilingual documents; the use of styles is recommended in this case. You don't give us very much information so it's hard to help you. The openoffice installation file is over 100MB in size. If you are using a dial-up connection to the internet this will many hours to download. If you are getting a message about the file being corrupted (this appears to happen on some Windows systems) you can easily find the solution to your problem by noting the exact text on the message and googling the error message along with openoffice. You will quickly find a solution that way. Cheers, Jonathan -- Registerd Linux user #445917 at http://counter.li.org/ Please do not send me copies of list mail. I read the lists. I got the idea from a previous email that mail outbound from the OP /to/ the list manager must have been getting lost, because he says he receives the unsub confirmation if someone else requests it on his behalf. It seems odd behaviour, as mail from the OP to the list itself is clearly getting through: the unsubscription address is just a different user on the same server. It seems unlikely that the OOo mail system itself would selectively drop mail in this way. OTOH AFAIK (aren't acronyms lovely!) the unsub system looks only at the sender address, not the message content, so a PGP signature shouldn't be likely to mess that up. To the OP: can you get replies from users-help@ ??? Might shed some light on where the problem might be. Oh, another idea which I've /not/ thought through fully: if your mailer can 'bounce' messages, maybe you could try setting mail filters to send back all list mail to the list return address. Regards Stan Ah. Different. You can customise keys via the ToolsCustomiseKeyboard menu but, unfortunately, OpenOffice does not allow the use of the Alt or Alt Gr key. There are various free tools available for entering non-English accented characters and ligatures. I use the Enhanced UK Keyboard at http://www.personal.leeds.ac.uk/~ecl6tam/http://www.personal.leeds.ac.uk/%7Eecl6tam/ . It uses dead (normally unused) keys followed by normal ones to produce a variety of non-English characters. So for example, when turned on (by selecting it in the taskbar), an ampersand () followed by an a produces the Scandinavian æ (ae) ligature and a percent sign (%) followed by an o produces ǒ (an o with an inverted circumflex over it). There's a nice printable chart in the Help file that you can keep by your keyboard till you've learnt the combinations you need :-) . You'll need to check that it handles all the characters you need: download the .zip file and look at the .pdf file within it which contains the nice printable chart. There's also the Quick Unicode Input Tool at http://www.cardbox.com/quick.htm which allows you to type the Alt key and the 3 or 4-digit number (on the numeric keypad) representing the Unicode value of the character you want. I've used this and it works but I find it less convenient than the Enhanced UK Keyboard. I think, though, that it has a wider coverage of characters and symbols. These both work in *any* Windows program. There's also http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/tools/msklc.mspx which allegedly lets you define your own keyboard layout. I've never used. Barbara Rodney Barbara, You don't have to worry about losing documents or other data files you have created when you uninstall the software/programs you used to create those files. Installing OOo (OpenOffice.org) will not delete, remove or otherwise interfere with anything you have created with any programs. That said, there are couple of things you might like to consider: * You do not have to uninstall MS Office, just because you are going to install OOo. There may be the odd occasion when it may be useful to have access to MS Office. You can uninstall it if you wish, but OOo will happily co-exist on the same computer with MS Office. * You should always regularly backup your data files (eg. writings, photographs, etc) to another medium (eg. DVD, external hard disk drive, etc.). Disk drives have a limited life and no matter how good their quality, ultimately they all fail. There are 3 golden rules in computing ;) 1, BACKUP YOUR VALUABLE DATA REGULARLY. 2. See rule 1, 3, See rules 1 2. Hope this helps. OpenOffice.org Base does not support the .wdb file format. To work the data contained within those files you must export the data, just open each and select save as, to a CSV, TXT or dBase IV file format, from within Works, first. Dbase is the best choice, IMO, and files will be named .dbf When you start Base then, select 'Connect to existing databse and in the drop down for type select dBase. On the next page select the directory where you saved the .dbf files and finish up. When the Base file is opened the files will each be listed as a separate table. NOTE - at this point the data is NOT in a native Base relational database, but simple dBase flat files. If you want to take the process to the next step and import these to a relational database that can be done also. The best thing would be to get the files to this stage first, then let the list know you are ready and one of us can help you with the last step. Instead, copy the cells from your spreadsheet and then use Edit | Paste Special... (or Ctrl+Shift+V), selecting DDE link from the options. This creates a table with your imported values, which you can then format as you require. Note that this technique actually creates a link to the source spreadsheet instead of a copy - so the spreadsheet file must continue to be available and any subsequent change to it will be reflected in your Writer document. If this is not what you need, after you have pasted the link, go to Edit | Links..., select the relevant link in the list, and press Break Link. You will now have an independent text document. I trust this helps. Brian Barker I did experiment briefly with the DDE option, but abandoned it at once, since it did not seem to be doing what I wanted. Thanks, Bud I don't know why OOo is opening your saved emails unless you've set it to do so and I don't even know if that's possible. Or; Are you saying that clicking on the OE icon opens OOo? It sounds like either a file association has been changed or the link for a shortcut has been damaged. Neither should have been a result of installing OOo but strange things to happen now and then. Try explaining the problem again but replace the words it and the program with specific names, etc., so it's a lot clearer what you mean. Hi; Just saw a reference to WriterTools for the first time in one of today's threads. http://nothickmanuals.info/doku.php/writertools I visited the site and liked some of the tools advertised, especially the foreign phrase translation. I suspect it is just a link to a translation site. That's OK - but does it work? For example, will it translate Latin phrases? Are the other tools well integrated into OOo? Is it worth the download and installing trouble, or am I just getting toys? I wonder if the problem on 2.3.1 SO8/9 and 2.4.0 (see below) are related to the fact that the document is basically a 21 page table. I also found that if I select the table in 2.4.0 and give it borders, I get a cpu overload (this is a 2.4Ghz/1GB system). I do not have the same problem with 3.0M6. If I delete the sound file, or move the .odp to another system where the sound file does not exist then the sound stops working. I want to distribute the sound when I distribute the .odp. On the other hand if I add sound using 'Insert/Object/Sound' then the sound does not play at all. open suse 10.3. Question is there any way to get 'Insert/Object/Sound' to work? Are there any Linux distros where 'Insert/Object/Sound' works out of the box? The way 'Insert/Object/Sound' is supposed to work, is the sound supposed to be included in the .odp or is it a link again? Also with either of the above two methods, if I export to .swf or to .html there is no exported sound. The exported Sound does not appear in the .html files and the .swf file is silent when played with firefox. Are there any Linux distro in which this is not the case? If you have Works, you can use it to save the data in dBase format and then use OpenOffice Base to access it. Below is a quote from Brian Barker (hope you don't mind, Brian) on the same subject: begin quote === Go back to your copy of Microsoft Works, open the databases in that, and save copies in dBase (*.dbf) format. (Works will do this.) Then create a new Base database, in the first panel of the Database Wizard select Connect to an existing database, scroll down to dBASE, and browse to your database copy. Your new Base database will be able to access the data from your old database. Alternatively, save the data from Works as Text Commas (*.csv). You can then either connect to this document from Base or else open the .csv file in Calc and then copy and paste the data into the Tables panel of Base, creating a new table in the process. === end quote === If the files really were not created by Works then either just download and install OpenOffice (it's free) and try, or upload one of the files to a web site somewhere and provide us with a link. Re: [users] Re: Spreadsheet to word processor table
Thanks, Niall. Yes, it does, and I think we may be getting closer here. If you click *below* the table you're working with (I generally add an empty paragraph before my paste point), rather than inside the table, then do the Paste Special for formatted text, you should get an independent table that looks pretty much like what you had in Calc. If you want to append the data from that copy to your existing, nicely formatted table, just add an empty row at the bottom of the formatted one. Then click somewhere in the copied table, Table Select Table, and Ctrl-C. Now you have all your spreadsheet data in a good form for normal pasting. Click in the first cell (or whichever one is to be the top left of the appended data) of the empty new row of the formatted table, then Ctrl-V. Your data should populate the formatted table in the appropriate columns, adding all the rows it needs. Now you can delete the copied temporary table. That should do it, I hope, though you may have to do a little more to get the copied data to match the existing table's format. I do a very similar thing getting data from Base tables and queries into Writer tables. Unfortunately, the clipboard formats for Writer, Calc, and Base seem to be incompatible without the intermediate step. (By the way, let's keep all this on the list so others can help, too.) Niall Martin wrote: Thanks for your message.. Initially I created my table, then did paste special on to it. No go. I then explored the other options. DDE seemed to give the wrong answer. Paste special taking the formatted text option put everything in a single column of the table, instead of distributing the items in the appropriate columns. What succeeded was paste special, taking the unformatted text option, highlighting the pasted text, followed by table/convert to table. It does seem a roundabout way of doing things, particularly if having set up the table you then want to add more data to it. I hope this clarifies the process. I find this rather long winded and awkward. Have I missed something? Possibly. I think that, in Writer, this is even easier than you hope. Don't create any table first. Your second paragraph I regard as a workaround which I will try some time, but still regard as rather clumsy. Thanks for your comment. Niall Martin Niall, have you done the Paste Special as formatted test? That seems to preserve more of the formatting than the DDE link, whether later broken or not. You should end up with a table immediately after doing the Paste Special that comes pretty close to what you had in Calc. When you say turn what I have pasted into a table what kind of steps are you going through? Maybe we can help with that part.
