I mean saying I know there are moderators with enough admin rights to add

If there is no longer such feature in the list management platform, it's a

On the other hand, if instead the politics of administration of this list

and I respect it anyway.

Of course, I know too a moderator cannot prevent a subscribed user to post
nearly everything he/she wants, neither a moderator can delete messages

Nevertheless, there should still be somewhere an option to exclude someone
after reiterated violations of netiquette, otherwise this list would be
prone to subscribed spammers and "vulgarities-sayers".

Thanks for your answer.

Many thanks for your feedback. I am being asked for the issue details,

[users] Re: can't find the program on my macbook

2009-09-16 Thread Michael Reich
After downloading software, you need to install it before it can be
used. You should download software to a particular location, like your
desktop or your Documents folder, so you can easily locate them. It
sounds like you downloaded the installer, but didn't actually install
the program. If so, use the spotlight feature (the blue magnifying
glass icon in the upper right corner of your desktop) to search for
something like OOo_3.1.1_MacOSXIntel_install_en-US.dmg (see below).

When you download the OOO package from the web on a Mac, you should have
an installation program which ends with a .dmg extension
(OOo_3.1.1_MacOSXIntel_install_en-US.dmg). Double-click this file and
it will "mount" as a disk image on the Mac desktop. It also should
automatically open a window which displays an OpenOffice.org icon and
another icon for your Applications folder. Simply drag the
OpenOffice.org icon and drop it on the Applications icon. The software
will then install in your Applications folder. This is the standard
way programs are installed in OS X.

After installation, you can launch OpenOffice by navigating to your
Applications folder and double clicking the OpenOffice icon.

If you need more assistance, let us know.

I am new to Open Office and to macbook. I downloaded Open Office
yesterday. When I went to use it today, I could not find it.

What did I do wrong?

Spell checking is linked to the language attribute of the text ...
You can see/set that in various ways:
 - Format|Font, tab Font > Langage
 - Context menu > Edit paragraph style> Tab Font > Language
 - Tools|Language ...
And of course you have to start spell checking. Can be done with the
"ABC-with red wave" Icon on the toolbar Standard.

If you need more information to answer this, please ask.

What you try to achieve, is searching in the field values - which the
numbers in a numbered list are.
I can see no way to do that. Other than writing a macro for it. But if
your need is great enough for that work ...
A dirty work around may be: copy the text, paste special>unformatted
text in a new document, and search there :-\

Sorry that I can't be of any more help on this,

sizable investment in supporting software. A friend suggested I save my
money an use Ubuntu. I got my feet wet with a Wubi install so all my
previous Windows stuff stayed in tact. About a month later, I blew out
windows on four machines and installed Ubuntu. I found it extraordinarily
easy to make the transition. I was just up and running with Ubuntu right
away. My printers were'nt very old, so the printer drivers worked "out of
the box". I've since been back to having fun with computers as I steer
deeper into what Ubuntu can do. I was amazed at the depth of help material
on-line and the extent to which users in the forums will go to help you fix
a problem. I'm by no means a Windows power user; so I wasn't that much more
proficient than most I guess. Linux just worked for me, and it does for a
lot of other people too. If you can tell us which drivers you need, perhaps
someone can point you towards what you need. I'm entering the world of
netbooks with a Starling from System76; it comes with Ubuntu installed (as
do all their computers). All reports are no driver issues of any kind so it
sounds like a lot of your problems may have already been addressed.

There's been an issue in the past with wireless networking, but it seems
that's been mostly taken care of on the Ubuntu side. There are, admittedly,
some problems on the Windows side turning the card on and off when exiting
the OS, but that's hardly the fault of Ubuntu, and there was recently a work
around posted for that.

Sounds like it's been awhile since you looked ... a lot has happened in the
18 months since I first started. Why not give it a go again? Let us know
what you need to make it work for you. You'll be pleased with the response,
I'm sure.

Actually, for a variety of reasons, Linux tends to be far more secure.
Are you aware, for example, that much of the security problems with IE
result from MS trying to prove a point in response to what they claimed
in a court case? Look up Netscape vs Microsoft, where MS claimed IE
couldn't be removed, as it was part of the OS. At the time it wasn't,
but with the next version, it was tightly intertwined with the operating
system, with the result that a security problem for the browser becomes
a security probem for the entire system.

In normal usage, Linux does not expose users to risk, as they're less
likely to run as admin (root). On the other hand, Windows users often
have to run as admin, in order to get the app to work.

Apologies - like many others, I've been ignoring this thread since its
devolved into a shouting, name calling flame war.

However, as in the past, let me re-iterate. Moderators of the OOo lists do
not have the ability to ban or censor posters.

However it would be good for everyone to review the guidelines (
http://www.openoffice.org/ml_guidelines.html) and in particular the 3rd
point on what should not happen:"Personal attacks (not criticising a
position, but slamming or flaming the writer)".

I'm sure everyone can have their say without resulting to the behaviour that
seems to have been going on in this thread.

[users] Datapilot error in Calc.?

2009-09-16 Thread James Elliott
I am president of an organisation and I am using a membership spreadsheet
sent to me by my predecessor, Peter, (who I cannot contact for the moment
to help me solve this problem).

I have 4 new members to add ... i.e. I need to use 4 rows at the bottom of
the spreadsheet to enter their data.

I have entered 2, but when I try and enter #3 I get this error message:

"You cannot change this part of the Datapilot table"

Peter did have the word "Filter" in that cell, and below it was a table
consisting of a short list of members he had obviously sorted according to
some criterion or filter, but I wasn't interested in this filtered list so I
deleted it all to make room for more records to be added.

It looks like Peter was using Datapilot (which I do not understand yet) to
do something and even though I have cleared those cells of all visible
content there is obviously some non-visible content or reference to those
cells that is stopping me from entering data into them..

How do I get out of this please? ... so that I can use these 'Datapilot
cells' to enter membership records.

Many thanks, James.

You can really twist statements to convey your desire rather than the

Not really, Cor. Matthias said much earlier in this thread that what
'renaissance' was about was the implementation (aka copying) of "The
Ribbon" in OOo, but called by a different name. So far, all the
arguments in favor of copying the failure known commonly as "The Ribbon"
go along the lines of copying it because it is from Microsoft. Again,
OOo is about providing productivity software not copying.

Base needs real UI work, Writer and Calc probably are the least
problematic. Fix Base up rather that waste time running to the back of

Hi Dave,

this is a known and still open issue that the sounds do not loop.
I bcc'ed the responsible developer to remind him that he may fix this
long standing issue better sooner than later :)

All fingers crossed we (the sun paid developers working on OOo) will

for the near/mid future, including better video integration and support
for narration.

Another user contacted me asking for advice about playing audio
throughout an entire Impress presentation with version 3.1.1. I referred
him to the relevant section of the current Impress User Guide, namely:
Chapter 9, pages 11-12, where it says it is possible to play a sound
throughout the presentation by:

1.Select the slide where you want the sound to start and go to the
 Slide Transition pane.

   2. In the Modify transition section, select the entry "Other Sound"
  from the Sound drop-down menu.

   3. Select the "Loop until next sound" checkbox if you want the sound
to restart once it is finished.

Cautionary Note: Do not click the Apply to all button, otherwise
your selected sound will restart at every slide

The other user followed the instructions to the letter and could not get
the audio to play continuously throughout the entire presentation. Being
unsure as to the cause of his issue, I tested this with 3.1.1 on 2
different OS, on 6 different machines, with both existing and newly
created presentations. Each time the result was exactly the same, in
that the audio (regardless of length) played to it's conclusion, but did
not loop until the end of the presentation.

Can anyone point me to an example of presentation where this works?
Unless I am completely overlooking something here (not impossible), I
propose to file a 3.1.1 bug report and request the Authors Project to
add a note to the user guide that point 3 (loop checkbox) above does not
work.

Please cc. any replies to: capf...@verizon.net

Within each separate template you can change it by changing the template
via File|Template|Edit.
Changing the "default" document can be done in two steps:
- create a document with the desired (page) settings and save as template
  (File|Template|Save)
- set that template as default
  (File|Template|Organize,
select the template in the list left,
   choose Commands|Set As Default Template)

Thanks for your input Harold. I have just put your suggestion to the
test with a couple of sample presentations. The main audio plays once to
it's conclusion, which is a little over half way through the
presentation and then silence until the [dummy] last slide triggers the
short audio correctly. Unfortunately, the main audio does not loop.

[users] Setting page number is un-intuative ??

2009-09-16 Thread William Case
Hi;

Just comparing notes.

I find setting or re-setting the page number un-intuitive. Every time I
want to start or re-start numbering I end up searching on all the menus
for a way of doing it. Then I have to once again use Help => Index =>
Page numbers. From there it takes three or four key strokes or mouse
clicks to make the number change. Yes, it should be easy to remember
"The new page number is an attribute of the first paragraph of the
page." but it is not -- at least not to me. It may well be logically
and appropriately an attribute of the first paragraph, but to me it is
an item on its own or properly belongs with stuff about page numbers.

If I gauge how many times I have been asked by others how to do it, and,
the number of times page numbering questions have been asked on this
list, wouldn't it be simpler to add "Page Numbers Start At:" to the
Insert => Fields => sub-menu.

Maybe a small dialogue that had the following:

Page numbering/re-numbering
A radio button choice for: Whole document, or From this page
A spinner for page number starting at: 0

Other formatting could remain where they are i.e Edit Fields, Format
Paragraph.

I wouldn't require any changes to the current commands; just easy access
to the page numbering part of the dialogue on the paragraph formatting
dialogue.

Or, I guess I could write a macro. That would solve the problem for me,
but not for others.

Like everyone else here, I'm tired of your stupidity. You have been told over
and over and over how to make your voice heard to the Rennaisance project.
You're apparently too dumb to follow the advice. It's time someone spoke up
and told you in less than polite terms that you're an idiot.

Shame on you for being too dumb to follow that advice... shame on you for not
listening to the polite responses.

I'm done with you and you're foolishness. Do you know what a "Plonk" is?
You've been plonked. You're the weakest link.. .goodbye.

Hello Cor,

For what I've seen, I agree with what Harold Fuchs wrote on Sept. 1st:
My main objections are:
1. The UI shown in the example took far too much screen space.
2. The UI is far less important than many other things in OOo. If
there are resources available they should be deployed fixing major
bugs and/or implementing popularly requested enhancements.

I might add that communication about this project hasn't been too
clear and informative, so rumour tends to take over, which is a bad
thing for Open Source. I think we agree on that

[users] FYI: Math related OpenSymbol font changes

2009-09-16 Thread Thomas Lange - Sun Germany - ham02 - Hamburg

Hia all,

I created issue 105084 in order to address several Math related problems
with the OpenSmbol font. If anyone likes to know about what is planned,
please have a look in the document attached to that issue.

It would be especially nice if someone could review the new planned
unicode points in case there might me a problem/error.

Regards,
Thomas

This Tommy idiot doesn't understand.. Internet petitions do absolutely ZERO!!
They have ZERO influence. They achieve absolutely nothing. Show me ONE
Internet petition that had ANY impact at all on the topic it was supporting.
There isn't one.

All that is happening is people are getting annoyed by all this SPAM about
signing the useless petition. Tommy is all excited because in the past month
50 people have signed this mindless useless meaningless petition. The petition
does nothing but make him look like a total troll.

Tommy, you can rant and rave like this as much as you want, but you're only
making yourself look more and more and more like a total fool - as Cor was
politely trying to point out. You rant and rave on the forum, to the point you
got a ban warning, and threads you participate in are locked... you just don't
get it. You're only looking stupid. If you bothered to join the Renaissance
project and contribute there you could influence the direction the project is
going... propose something better promoting a useless petition on a site
full of scam links will do ZERO.

A lot of us, myself included do not like the proposal. The smart ones among us
provided feedback to the Project explaining in rational terms what we saw was
wrong with the proposal. The dumb ones rage about here like an annoying 2 year
old with Attention Deficit Disorder.

I've had enough... and I know a LOT here have had enough of this petition
nonsense. Shut up about it already! Let this mailing list return to what is
was designed for.. users helping users. Stop polluting the list with your
idiocy and your misleading and false accusations.

Amen! :-)

Customization is the magic word, I suppose. Of course, as far as that
customization really can reproduce the previous user experience for those
people that don't like the new one.

[users] Re: Petition against OOo Renaissance

2009-09-16 Thread Joe(theWordy)Philbrook

It would appear that on Sep 15, The Beaver did say:

That might depend... While I'd like to think they aren't actually going to
copy MS, in order to explain my feelings, I too am going to point at
something MS did to their office product some time ago. Do you remember
when they introduced that "paperclip". At the time I had MS Office on
my assigned PC at work. All I wanted was a way to tell it to stay hid
unless I ask for help. But to keep it from waving at me whenever it
wanted to suggest something, I wound up disabling so much of the help
system that the F1 key became useless... (that was when I first looked
into Star Office, which soon led me to Open Office... And I've been
choosing it ever since.)

If they provide a way for an OOo user who feels that some or all of the
old UI was more intuitive than the new one, to selectively turn off the
new features and restore the old appearance and behavior, then your
probably right about that "Nobody with a brain" bit...
But if they just cram something down their existing user bases throats.
Especially if it effectively says: "We have decided that this is more
intuitive than the what your already used to, so like it or not, you will
have to 'just get used to it'..." Then, even if they "did" actually make
it more intuitive, at least SOME of us, even some of the ones with brains,
will look elsewhere. Personally I don't care what they do to the "out of the
box" default UI. Just as long as they keep the changes a user configurable
choice. Then, I'll keep choosing to use it.

Caveat: this is my very own opinion and it's just a friendly suggestion in
order to calm this discussion down.

Pay attention, Larry, that the sentence I quoted above *may* be pursued
according to criminal law in my (and Tommy's) country.

Seriously accusing someone of a crime, without evidence, it's a crime too.
It's libel, when written in an email.

Many people in flame wars of any kind usually don't understand when they
have trespassed the border of legality with their words.

So, please, try to formulate your wordings by taking care of their
possible consequences in a public space like this mailing list.

Then, migrating the petition to a less questioned website is not a bad
idea. :-)
