2011-08-21 Thread Peggy Brenner
You must feel better at 40 pounds lighter, gotta keep moving, stay as
lite as possible, and don't smoke!

I think everyone has cut back, the real problem isn't the crash of 2008,
but if you look at your income for the past 10-12 years it's maybe the
same or darn close to it, but the cost of stuff has zipped right up
there. The reason fly shops aren't doing well is they carry just the
high end stuff so all the new comers go big box.

One of my students just outfitted his family of 4 to FF and they did it
at Cabelas, his budget was 300 per person and they fished all season,
locally out of a tent. Our local shop wanted close to 1000 per person
to outfit the same family. When you are funding retirement, college and
a mortgage there only so many peso's to spread around.

Don I'll have to look through my Indian/British cookbooks so we can
trade some recipes

As far as the VFB is concerned, Windows Mail Inbox is still my
screen-saver, and I always look for new VFB posts each day, as I work at
my computers much of the time.
Getting old is no fun (just turned 60), and although I'm not as old as
some here, I always say it's not the miles, but the off-road abuse.
Being able to log on and share anything is still enjoyable, and after
having TN and the surgery for it, anything that is not abject misery is
a good thing. It's helped alot losing 40 lbs. this spring, so I'm a lot
more active, but still not highly motivated. Ride my mountain bike more
now than ever- Trek Top Fuel 8- nice bike.
Because of the poor economy, especially in my field, I can't afford
fishing trips- not just for gas- but the incidentals, like miles on the
truck counting towards oil changes, brakes, tires, break-downs, etc.
Gotta make everything last as long as possible.
So I tie a lot and work around the yard, and spend the work days trying
to turn a buck or two. Tying is my therapy when I can't fish, and then
comes cooking. After cajun cooking, I got into Indian/British curry, and
started making my own Major Grey's style mango chutney for the curry.
Getting pretty good at it, too.
DVD sales were pretty brisk this winter and spring, but have dropped
off. Chris Helms says that's normal. I got to chat with him an hour or
so the other night, as we haven't crossed paths at a show in years.
So, just plugging away, waiting for better times, whatever they might
be. Hopefully the VFB can revive to something of its former days. I
don't know what it will take to restore it, especially if everyone is
just 'burned out' by life and pressure. Too bad Buggs, Dr. D, and
'Ronnie aren't here to keep me company any more.
Been conversing with Tony a lot off list, and that's been nice. He's
going through a lot, so I always think about him.

2011-08-21 Thread Wayne Blake-Hedges

Hi All;

In my case, I spend much more time online in winter and early spring, can't do
as much outside and I do most of my fly tying during this time of year.

I've been fishing at least a dozen times this summer, all warmwater.  I've had
tremendous success, each outing out my local pond I've caught at least 25 and
as many as 100 fish, bluegill, crappie, and Bass. Nothing huge but all on
topwater, a size 10 guglepop, and using my SirD bamboo flyrod that Tony and I
built together this spring.  I find I enjoy this flyrod more and more each time
I use it.

I still read all the postings, just don't spend as much time online.  Really
enjoy DonO's flies, always a suprise as to what DonO's going to post next.

Joyce (and all),
I, too, am getting older, but it is dubious that it's also 'wiser'. Can't be
wise when I'm forgettin everything.

As far as the VFB is concerned, Windows Mail Inbox is still my screen-saver,
and I always look for new VFB posts each day, as I work at my computers much of
the time.

Getting old is no fun (just turned 60), and although I'm not as old as some
here, I always say it's not the miles, but the off-road abuse. Being able to
log on and share anything is still enjoyable, and after having TN and the
surgery for it, anything that is not abject misery is a good thing. It's
helped alot losing 40 lbs. this spring, so I'm a lot more active, but still not
highly motivated. Ride my mountain bike more now than ever- Trek Top Fuel 8-
nice bike.

Because of the poor economy, especially in my field, I can't afford fishing
trips- not just for gas- but the incidentals, like miles on the truck counting
towards oil changes, brakes, tires, break-downs, etc. Gotta make everything
last as long as possible.

So I tie a lot and work around the yard, and spend the work days trying to turn
a buck or two. Tying is my therapy when I can't fish, and then comes cooking.
After cajun cooking, I got into Indian/British curry, and started making my own
Major Grey's style mango chutney for the curry. Getting pretty good at it, too.

DVD sales were pretty brisk this winter and spring, but have dropped off.
Chris Helms says that's normal. I got to chat with him an hour or so the other
night, as we haven't crossed paths at a show in years.

So, just plugging away, waiting for better times, whatever they might be.
Hopefully the VFB can revive to something of its former days. I don't know
what it will take to restore it, especially if everyone is just 'burned out' by
life and pressure. Too bad Buggs, Dr. D, and 'Ronnie aren't here to keep me
company any more.

Been conversing with Tony a lot off list, and that's been nice. He's going
through a lot, so I always think about him.

All,
I have been a member of the list for years but rarely do I ever post. I used to
participate in some swaps but I haven't in a few years. But I always look and
read. I am not a big poster. I am not a big computer person. But between work
and all, in these days, its a must to work with computers. So I have a
computer, use it, subscribe to lists, etc. But I just do not post much. But I
do read and learn. So I hope the list is around for awhile..

Seems there are several of us that open the list first thing in the morning and
put it to bed at night. As you do Joyce, I do the same. I wish there was a way
for all of us to get together. The closest we have come is at the Sowbug show
when we had 37 members there. We had a get together at the show one afternoon.
I was presented with a box of flies.

I think you are so right. Since I have had my medical problems I really don't
feel like doing any tying or even posting cause I have nothing to say. Maybe I
should push myself a bit.
I have a rod to get finished for a list member that was ordered almost a year
ago. I just can't find the energy to work in it. It is just about finished but
I just can't seem to get to it.When I get one of these spells, I am not good to
do anything for several weeks. I had one a few weeks ago.

Just like your WRD's, It would only take me a few minuets to get them tied but
I just keep forgetting about it. When I get them sent to you, I will trade you
for a popper.

whatever, I have not seen anything out of the way, no flamming, plenty of good
natured banter, via DonO and Nick and a few others  Good stuff all
around.
Even Byard has put in his 2 cents wort several times. Good to
see
he's pleased with the Re-invented VFB.

Re: [VFB] VFB "The Phoenix Rises"

2011-08-21 Thread Niclas Runarsson
Better re-invented and re-growing than dead and forgotten. A quick
gathering of the troops into Googlegroups was a good saviour when the
Troutnet domain suddenly died on us. We did lose quite a few members
though. 3,5 years later we are 209 of us - a third of the former list.
But I don't think it made a big change in traffic. "The Big Four" (as
described by the About Us list) - Don, Tony, JimmyD and Jimi, were
quickly back on track and started to generate replies from the rest of
us. My Outlook post file never noticed a difference. LOL

1: DonO - 1393
2: Tony - 1221
3: Bigtroutman - 1150
4: Deserttrout - 1036
(with Allan as no 5, with a humble 657)
