You can set keyframes and all that good stuff.
I'm not sure if Elements has this or not though.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: question about shameless self promotion...

2006-01-21 Thread Markus Sandy

it seems that this thread has gotten off point and the original remark
may have been misinterpreted.

first, the main question was regarding another group. I think the
group michael asked about is
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/videoblogging_content/

second, i think michael may have taken his own point off track by
mentioning the signature (perhaps in friendly jest). I don't think the
issue is really the signature as much as it may be with the constant
and (often repeated) "I posted another video" emails.

While it's true that Paul self-promotes more than most, lots of people
plug their new vlogs and posts here (just search for the subject line
"shameless self promotion").

[videoblogging] Re: accurate count of viewers per episode

2006-01-21 Thread Bill Streeter
There is no way to know for sure what the real number of views you are
getting. All you can gage is downloads. You have to assume that some
people download videos and never watch them and some download and save
it and show it to their friends, neither one can really be accounted
for with web server stats.

Most video sharing services provide download stats for you. Actually
Blip TV does a really good job (if their numbers are accurate) better
than the program my web host uses to display my server statistics. On
my web host I can track how many times a file is downloaded in a day.
But there is no way (that I can find) to track the numbers over a
longer period of time. But Blip does.

[videoblogging] Re: camera suggestions ?

2006-01-21 Thread Rich Hand
Bill-

When is a rant a rant and when is a rant an education?

Perhaps the latter applies here. Points well taken.

In addition, I researched what I would need to post process the 24p as
24p. Not all NLEs can handle the native format. The ones that do
tend to be on the high-end.

Thanks for the education.

--- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Bill Streeter [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

This is kind of an issue with me. The DVX 100 has 24p but I find 24p
to be over rated when it comes to getting a film look. When people
talk about getting a film look on video they're talking about
getting a film transfered to video look. The best ways to achieve this
is A) to de-interlace which actually reduces your resolution because
de-interlacing involves removing or blending in every other horizontal
line. And B) to make fine adjustments to the gamma curves in your
footage. If you know Photoshop or are a Photographer you'll know what
I'm talking about. Video tends to have a harsher more evenly
distributed gamma curve and film tapers more in the light and dark
 parts of your image.

24p tries to mimic the frame rate of film which is almost
imperceptible if the footage is kept in a video format. And when you
are capturing 24 frames per second you are capturing less information.
than you would capture in 25fps (pal) or 29.97fps (ntsc). I want to
start with the maximum image information posible and then have the
choice to throw out stuff later if I want.

One other reason some people think they need to shoot in 24p is
because they think it helps when they are bumping up to film. It
doesn't. When video is bumped up to film the process works the same if
you shot 24p or 60i. And I don't care what kind of camera you shot
with or how you shot it, MiniDV footage will never look like you shot
on 35mm once you've bumped it up to 35mm.

There all kinds of conversion issues you have too before you can even
 edit the stuff as well.

So it all boils down to this: 24p is an unnecessary gimmick that is
really just a pain in the ass.

If you want a more 'filmish' look deinterlace (and a lot of web level
compression already does this for you) and adjust your gamma curves if
you can (one nice thing about the DVX 100 is that it can do this for
 you in camera).

 End of rant.

I know I must be off my nut to respond to a general comment like that,
but here goes...

The comparison I was doing was they are about the same size and have
similar abilities. I wasn't getting into a my cam is better than your

Both are rather point and shoot; easy to carry and if desired can be
put into auto mode for casual use.

Neither is on the level of the DVX100B.

But thanks for the comment, it made me go look up the details on the
HC20 (nice cam). I used http://www.camcorderinfo.com/ratings.php as
suggested earlier in this thread to see details about several cams.

one other method you might want to look at is the mike figgis 'bicycle wheel' mount, gives a really different feel to a steadycam and can lead you to some great camera movements you may not have thought of before.. now known as the 'fig rig' it seems
URL:http://www.dvguru.com/2005/12/06/camera-support-the-fig-rig/you can make them fairly easily and there seem to be quite a few 'how-tos' if you look around.

Thanks for the new resources. I had seen the

To give you (and perhaps myself) a better sense of what I want the cam
for, take a look at the F.E.M. site/project
http://www.foureyedmonsters.com/ .

That is the documentary style I am hoping for. It is crystal clear
(at times); the lighting is tremendous and the angle/shots/cuts are
done with effectiveness. It is a combo of in the field and in a
controlled environment shots that really seem to work.

So it may be that I am not looking for the film look but rather a
cam that can record with sufficient technical quality and that I can
adjust/set so that I can do whatever I need in the post process.

Does any of this makes sense?

[videoblogging] Re: camera suggestions ?

2006-01-21 Thread Chris Daniel
Again, it depends on how you plan to use the camera. If you want to
only use it for videoblogging, you may want to choose a saller/less
expensive camera. However, if you plan on using it for
projects/short films, the DVX is a great choice.

wrote:

Tell that to George Lucas :)

When people
talk about getting a film look on video they're talking about
getting a film transfered to video look. The best ways to achieve
this
is A) to de-interlace which actually reduces your resolution
because
de-interlacing involves removing or blending in every other
horizontal
line. And B) to make fine adjustments to the gamma curves in your
footage. If you know Photoshop or are a Photographer you'll know
what
I'm talking about. Video tends to have a harsher more evenly
distributed gamma curve and film tapers more in the light and dark
 parts of your image.

You can adjust the gamma curves in camera w/ the DVX.

24p tries to mimic the frame rate of film which is almost
imperceptible if the footage is kept in a video format. And when
you
are capturing 24 frames per second you are capturing less
information.

You're shooting in the same frame rate as film.

than you would capture in 25fps (pal) or 29.97fps (ntsc). I want to
start with the maximum image information posible and then have the
choice to throw out stuff later if I want.

One other reason some people think they need to shoot in 24p is
because they think it helps when they are bumping up to film. It
doesn't. When video is bumped up to film the process works the
same if
you shot 24p or 60i. And I don't care what kind of camera you shot
with or how you shot it, MiniDV footage will never look like you
shot
on 35mm once you've bumped it up to 35mm.

Agreed, I think the DVX footage looks more like 16mm film.

There all kinds of conversion issues you have too before you can
even
 edit the stuff as well.

So it all boils down to this: 24p is an unnecessary gimmick that is
really just a pain in the ass.

Not a big problem if you have a NLE that handles the conversion for
you. Just a matter of clicking on a few buttons.

If you want a more 'filmish' look deinterlace (and a lot of web
level
compression already does this for you) and adjust your gamma
curves if
you can (one nice thing about the DVX 100 is that it can do this
for
 you in camera).

 End of rant.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: accurate count of viewers per episode

2006-01-21 Thread Devlon
If it helps any, Mefeedia reports how many people are subscribed to a
feed (in Mefeedia) and how many time videos from a feed have been
viewed (again only viewed in Mefeedia). But I agree this is a hard
stat to track since a user night be watching their queue in other
applications (FireAnt, iTunes, DTV, PSP, etc.) and the hit goes to the
actual media.

This is one stat that would be great to get a handle on somehow...how
many videoblog watchers there are, how many (total) are watched a day,
etc.

On 1/21/06, Bill Streeter [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Most video sharing services provide download stats for you. Actually
Blip TV does a really good job (if their numbers are accurate) better

What happens when I have it hosted on a third party, or perhaps

there was something someone suggested ages ago (i think it may have been andreas),quicktime allows you to embed linked content into a movie.. so you could place an invisible image near the end of your movie, one that has to be downloaded from your site. the amount of hits for that image file should roughly equal how many times your movie has been watched. the viewer has to be online when they watch the film for it to register a hit... i also think there may be some ethical issues with this ;)

Downloads and not views would be an old wet newspaper on the doorstep,
magazine delivered that just gets recycled. Also, someone may share a
downloaded video with a friend or two on their portable device so how
would you track that?

I think it is safe to model readership or viewership based on downloads. Is that a fair assessment?

This is in the head tag:

script language=JavaScript type=text/JavaScript
!--
function MM_goToURL() { //v3.0
   var i, args=MM_goToURL.arguments; document.MM_returnValue = false;
   for (i=0; i(args.length-1); i+=2)
eval(args[i]+.location='+args[i+1]+');
}
//--
/script

And this is in the body:
a href=http://www.jensimmons.com/blog;
img src=card.jpg
onload=MM_goToURL('parent','http://www.jensimmons.com/blog');return
document.MM_returnValue /
/a

I put the manual link code there in case someone's browser misses the
javascript, then they can click on the image and get to the new site.

If you make a plain-jane html page and use this code, you can make that
your template in blogger, and blogger will post it to index.html. It
just won't have any blogger tags in it, so nothing from your blog will
show up. This does take a bit more knowledge of how to create an html
page from scratch, so the other solution is easier for people who only
know how to use blogger. Here, I'll paste the full html into the end of
this message, so you can see the whole thing.

Thanks to Verdi!! (all hail!)

It is better to video your elderly relatives doing something. This is not a remix, it must be brand new.

2006-01-21 Thread Stephanie Bryant
OK. See, your initial post didn't say what the project was. I think I
understand now:

The student wrote the music.
The student (or class) will be mixing footage from the vlogging community
Subject matter: Elderly people in action.
Format: raw, or H256 encoded at 1000bps at least 640x480, no wide screens!
Usage: Educational, non-profit.

The subject matter and what was wanted (besides footage) was missing
in the original email. I hope I get it now.

My only living elderly person lives on the other coast, so I won't be
able to help out.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: accurate count of viewers per episode

2006-01-21 Thread Harold Johnson

For now, it's going to have to be that, until the Nielsens of web video figure out how to register the brain activities of audiences or something (to make sure they're watching, and are aware). I can live with the number of downloads; it certainly beats counting on diary cards (as the Nielsens still do)!

would you track that?

I think it is safe to model readership or viewership based on downloads. Is that a fair assessment?

All schemes like this fail when played on a portable player, or on any
quicktime player which doesn't honour such daftness (VLC, for
example), or anyone who watches a transcoded version, etc..

And just like every other circulation count, it fails if more than
one person watches a particular showing.

In practice you'd probably get more useful results simply counting
downloads. The bottom line is that trying to force a model based on
this sort of thing being countable is barking at the moon.

I dont care how much you promote yourself (within reason) but I really
dont like to see anybody having a pop at someone else in their
signature. Its quite normal for people to react if they feel they have
been attacked, but to reference it in every unrelated post you make
seems a bit over the top to me.

I thought if you were happily declaring yourself to be promoting
yourself without shame, that you wouldnt mind if ocassionally a human
or 2 had a moan. Thought you were unashamed so had nothing to get
defensive about. Instead you are trying to shame or bully someone into
apologising?

[videoblogging] TV/radio covering blogs

2006-01-21 Thread Jay dedman
I was listeing to the radio in the car yesterday and heard a whole
show about blogging.
The host had guests who debated about what was going on with certain blogs.
something about how coverage was affecting politcs etc.

then i realized, what if blogs got so popular that TV and radio just
became places where people discussed what was going on in the
blogsphere?
like Hollywood or the Beltway, people would discuss certain
personalities, the in's and out's of coverage, nuances of certain
posts.

as more people turn to the web during their off time, traditional
media will be forced to cover what people are talking about.

just a interesting idea.

For the geeks out there... if you've got Greasemonkey installed, here's a

I got a lot of responses to a few Greasemonkey scripts I wrote a while back

Since then I've gotten a lot of requests from people asking if I can write
scripts to download videos from this site or that site. Someone recently
asked if I could write a script to d/l videos from
 http://today.reuters.com/tv/ eh, why not?

awesome.
i would love to see a Reuters video feed i could subscribe to...
be like having a news ticker in my aggregator.
anyone want to take this hack farther?
