That would be an e-mail worm. I doubt they are from my computer since my
computer was very much turned off when the messages were sent. The
attachments are infected (at least my virus scanner pops up and warns me
whenever I try to open one of those mails), so don't open them.

[videoblogging] Re: observations on the group

2006-02-09 Thread Ms. Kitka
That is BEA-U-TIFUL...

So, if this many people are making videoblogs about those who choose
to be A-holes on this message board, why aren't we doing something
more? Shouldn't the administrator set some boundaries and kick off
those who choose to attack others? I sure think so.

The reason these people are making videos outlining the frustration of
this group is probably because they feel as if they'd be attacked if
they brought it up in a post here.

I propose change... Vive la revolution, and all that.

Kitka

[videoblogging] snapz pro x issues on new macs

2006-02-09 Thread Markus Sandy

FYI, for those who use the popular snapz pro x to capture video on macs
...

I was in the snapz pro x FAQ and noticed the following item concerning
the compatibility of their software with the new Intel based macs (not
surprising for software that has to perform low level functions like
this).

I imagine we will see more issues like this arise (and hopefully get
resolved quickly).

We have found a few problems with the Snapz Pro X 2 and the Intel
machines.

The kernel extension Snapz Pro X 2 relies on to record Mac audio is not
compatible, so Snapz Pro X 2 cannot record Mac audio with movies. It
can record from a microphone or line in.

If the Use movie guides option is checked in the Movie palette, the
vertical lines of the guide will appear as a series of lines in the
movie. The workaround is to uncheck that option.

Cursors in movies are hollow. We do not have a workaround for this
problem.

Since Apple released the new Intel machines ahead of schedule, we are a
bit behind in updating our software for them.

We do not have a timetable on when the Intel compatible Snapz Pro X 2
will be released.

Sure, you could republish the same content on the same feed, but
that's not quite what I was pointing out - my videoblog from 2002
has been and gone. I'm fine with that, because it was meant to have
a beginning, a middle and an end. If I were to continuously loop
the content on the RSS feed, however, people would be jumping in
at random times. They might unintentionally start to watch from the
middle of the story...

(Aside: yes, my videoblogs do have a narrative that spans the
episodes. This alone sets them apart from the "canonical" form that
Rocketboom et al represent.)

I've got round this issue to a certain extent by offering feeds
which have a timestamp that is generated by my feeds page. If
people subscribe manually using this feed address, then I can
indeed serve up a feed of the archived content, based on the
subscription date. A problem arises, however, with portals such as
iTMS etc. They only have the facility to register a single feed
address, so that option becomes impossible. My only option is to
register the complete feed so that people can choose the video
episode they want to see. Again one runs into issues - apps like
FireAnt will go ahead and download all 85 files unless instructed
to do otherwise!

The above only really scratches the surface of why the current
canonical form of the videoblog raises problems for many content
producers - there are many others I'm sure, but these are already
enough to cause me concern about the assumptions implicit in it.

Cheers,

Christian

Re: [videoblogging] observations on the group

2006-02-09 Thread Stephanie Bryant

One can make (and post) a video of that nature every 2-3 weeks here on
the vlogging group. I remember before I took my 4-month hiatus, there
was discussion then about the critical mass and the problems of the
group, etc. It's not just since Christmas-- it happens on a regular
basis.

It might just be best for sensitive folks to avoid the group once a month. Like staying away from a woman with PMS.

Then the non-panywaists can get some work done.

[videoblogging] We need more vlogs about vlogging!

2006-02-09 Thread Randolfe Wicker

I'm surprised at how few videos are produced about
the techniques and technical hurdles encountered in vlogging.

I've seen some that give lighting hints, etc.
I've seen one or two telling how to use certain systems.  I did one which
is the first part of a short series about how to "Top Blip's 'Most Watched'
List"
http://www.blip.tv/file/13393

Actually, Rob Reedy's comment on my vlog (he was
featured in a way) explained something I did not understand as to why his vlog
failed to load despite my many tries.

The subject of vlogging, cameras, techniques, etc.
are especially interesting to vloggers and most of those viewing vlogs these
days are probably vloggers or vlogger want-to-be's.

Good serious vlogs about even interesting subjects
frequently tank.  That's exactly what happened to me today with an
interview I did with a woman who ran a farm sanctuary for farm
animals.
http://www.blip.tv/file/13342

So, let's all do more vlogs about vlogging.
We'll get more viewers.  We'll get better acquainted.  We'll learn
something!

[videoblogging] Re: We need more vlogs about vlogging!

2006-02-09 Thread Rob Reedy
Hello Randy,

Thanks for all the mentions and referrals back to me... and yes, I
have to admit that I am new to all of this and stumbling and
bumbling my way through... I did not realize that there were such
problems with my early VBlogs... but when I am posting video in the
300 - 600 meg stage... well... I have learned how to shave it down
some.

It would help to know what you all consider to be the best video
display size... and also please understand that I am working in
a "windows" based system, not on a Mac... so that may be another
disadvantage.

I am not too vocal as far as the written group, but I read all of
it, and as you have seen (maybe), I am not bashful when it comes to
sharing my thoughts.

As a reward for your indulgence, I actually did post a VBlog I hope
people will find funny today... to make up for yesterday's confusion.

Take care

Rob Reedy

That's a intense and personal video. I can see how Josh's video would
remind of Allegro.

When I was off in College the cat I grew up with as a kid, Skippy,
died at my parents house. It was sad and nostalgic for him to go.

I'm guessing they figure the $10 into the promotional costs of the whole
thing. Seems like a good idea. I'm sure it pulls in the audience, since
the kids seem to love them the iTunes Music Store...

And just think, if Rocketboom upped their daily costs from $20 to $30

[videoblogging] multiple "" in a video-blog?

A video-blog has a series of video-clips. Many just have a link to

I notice some video-blogs use . Suppose you
have like 30 entries on 1 page, then 30 tags will
download 30 videos for playback? This is a LOT of bandwidth, & is
not preferable. Is it possible to have an "embed tag" which doesn't
download the video (until the users hits "play")?

[videoblogging] Respect

2006-02-09 Thread Jay dedman
I am the lead moderator of the Videoblogging Group.

The last couple months Ive been reading this list, being quiet.
Its pretty amazing the amount of personalities we've brought together here.
I'm glad people take the time to discuss and philosophize Videoblgoging.
We even now have a pretty diverse world to gossip about.

When Peter and I started this group in spring of 2004, we just wanted
people to talk to.
It was a lonely time.
We were posting videos to our blogs...and only found a handful of
other isolated people doing it.
We needed affirmation and discussion on the technology.
Look in the archives and see when we were discovering RSS feeds and enclosures.
This is pre-Feedburner.
We were figuring out how to TALK about videoblogging.
The group quickly became a place to help people get started.
It was extremely exciting.

After 2 years, the technology of Videoblogging is fairly well
understood by the Blogosphere.
Now conversations seem to be on definition, intent, and format.
Good. In the beginning, we always wanted more talk on the CREATION of
videoblogging.

As a moderator, all i ask is that people respect each other.
Just as you should be doing in real life.
You hate that Rocketboom just made 40,000$ for a week of advertising?
Cool, but post constructive criticism about it.
I see a lot of complaints that seem more like jealousy.
Love it or hate itRocketboom is one of us.
we're too small a group to tear each other apart. Anything that helps
people learn to subscribe and watch videoblogs is good. This gets a
person(who is curently watching TV) one step closer to watching you.

To the consternation of my other moderators, I have always been
hesitant to curtail anyone's opinions in the Videoblogging Group.
I feel that its one of our strengths.
Unlike other tech lists that are extremely strict on subject matter,
we've always been able to weave our personal outlook on life into our
technology conversations...though I do email people off-list to chill
out.

>From the beginning, we realized we are helping create an alternative
media structure.
It has more to do than specific html code or RSS specs.
We are simultaneously having a conversation about how we, as people,
can create and distribute our own media. This has never been possible
with video/audio on this scale.
We are learning how to talk about ourselves and the world around
us...which is a challenge because we are so used to traditional media
over-simplifying complex issues. or lying.
The worst thing we can do is not respect each other and tear our
"movement' apart.

For me, http://vlogmap.org is the shining example of our achievement.
i still am waiting for the strong connnections to people in
non-western countries through videoblogs. I want things to get fucking
nuts.

Bottom line: put your passion in your videoblog.
You dont like one style...then make yours the "best" so it spreads.
Examples are what help us evolve.

No one should get so cocky to crush someone else. We're all learning.
Eventhough I don't like everyone's videoblog on this list, I respect
the fact that each of you is putting out your own voice. Your vote is
what you subscribe to.

Remember that we are still at the crawling beginning, but the
revolution has happened.
We've won.
The creation and distribution barriers are open. No one can take this
away from us.
We all know that people are hungry for differing voices, so start exploring.
The way we lose is to marginalize ourselves and the work everyone is doing.
Work on storytelling, on showing more of the world, of your techniques.
Link to people you like. Talk ti up. The blogosphere is the chattering
class. We push stuff to the top.
And this only makes us better.

[videoblogging] anyone get a response from TIVO for their "Videoblog Project"

2006-02-09 Thread B Yen

A few months ago, someone posted a link to TIVO's "Videoblog Project":http://www.tivo.com/5.13.asp?messageType=videoblogI applied, but never got a response.  Did anyone get on board?  Obviously, Rocketboom is off & running.I noticed Rocketboom has several links for various "distribution mediums" for their content:quicktime | win | torrent | phone | psp | tivo | itunesThe "phone", "psp", "itunes" are of interest to me, because they are portable devices w/video capability.  I am interested in these new mediums as part of the Content/Distribution model.  For the iPod/iTunes is especially exciting, with 42 million out there (& counting).  It has an *established* distribution network of iTunes Music Store (w/revenue-stream).  It has a LOT of visibility, is popular with young generation (hip/fashionable/cool device).  Guess Jeans is making iPod compatible jeans, automobile mfrs are making their radios iPod compatible (Mercedes, Toyota, Chrysler, Ford).  What about:- cellphone (lot of activity, for streaming video: TV & Internet)- PSP (has WiFi capability, for Web access)Are these emerging "giants" as part of the "Video on Demand" revolution, where you can see video-content on a portable device?  Call it Agile/Mobile/Hostile (a term from Football, that describes a linebacker).

Re: [videoblogging] Respect

2006-02-09 Thread Ted Tagami

Many voices as one, yet each its own. Rock on Jay.

R E S P E C TOn 2/9/06, Jay dedman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

[videoblogging] Re: anyone get a response from TIVO for their "Videoblog Project"

2006-02-09 Thread Ms. Kitka
I never heard from them either. All I know is that Rocketboom
currently has an exclusive contract with them and that TiVo is using
them as an experiment. They are apparently testing everything with
Rocketboom (technologically) and once it is up and running, TiVo may
add more videoblogs. Andrew spoke about this in his interview with
Business Week (the podcast).

There is an increasing demand for Mobile content, but my show is too
large for people to download to their cell. My boyfriend and I are in
the process of mobile-ifying our web sites to make them accessible to
mobile phones, though. My new site design will launch this weekend.

I think the problem with PSP is the limited storage space. We have
considered making Kitkast available for PSP, but I think it also has a
16:9 screen and we don't have a PSP to test it out on, so the idea is
on the back burner.

iTunes is definitely a link to have if you want a broad audience...
more than 90% of my subscribers watch the show from iTunes. I was a
little surprised the other day, though, when RB added an iTunes link
under their embedded video... I wonder if other sites like FireAnt and
MeFeedia will be shaking their fists at the link.

My two cents,
Kitka

I completely agree. Knowledge is much richer and more accurate that
includes a diversity of views, experiences and perspectives. If
someone is mistaken 80% of the time they may still contribute vital,
unique and necessary information for the remaining 20%. Humans have
the ability to filter out what they consider superflous :)

For all its warts, I love this group. I joined late year thirsty for information on how to start videloblogging and got it in spades. I read daily...a lot. I expect both respect, and there has been plenty, and thick skins at the same time. I really like what most of you are doing and your generosity with knowledge.
So...here we are..the non-western videobloggers, or whatever you want to call our show. I got a camera and decided to put it in the hands of my smarter brethren in Kenya and we have produced a show for Kenyans to stay in touch with home - see
www.kenyamoto.com (basically because i figured that that was kind of videoblog I wanted to see most. So I created it).Peace.Vincent

Re: [videoblogging] multiple "" in a video-blog?

2006-02-09 Thread Joshua Kinberg
If you embed the videos in the blog entries, then you also need to
provide a direct link to the video file in order to use a service like
FeedBurner to create enclosures.

This is why the video popup method is good. It preserves the direct
link to the video for FeedBurner, but also gives an embedded video
solution for playback in the browser (including IE, which requires
embedded video playback).

Not to mention, embedding the video requires more code and better
knowledge of HTML. I wouldn't want to have to write all that for each
blog entry... helps to automate things like this to make it easier.

Really appreciate the positive feedback regarding 88SLIDE

We, er - I, am providing the prize from out-of-pocket now, but would always be

We're getting entries from all over the country; its truly amazing!

Re: [videoblogging] multiple "" in a video-blog?

2006-02-09 Thread Stephanie Bryant
I need to provide a direct link for those without a video-enabled RSS
reader anyway.

Plus Blogger provides that as an option with the Link field. And
theoretically, FeedBurner can now just snag your first link and is
*supposed* to accept rel=enclosure (but I haven't gotten that to work,
and I stopped trying since the "link" field option works).

Here's what's wrong with the popup and link-through options:

1) POP-UPS. Am I the only person who still HATES POPUPS?!?!?!? I can't
stand them. Hates, hates hates. Maybe I should "get with the program,"
but popups suck.

2) Both of them require the user to make an extra click to get the
video. What's the point? I want the few people who actually view my
vlog in my blog space to just have a one-click option. Boom, you're on
my page? BOOM! There's the video! Click to play, you're done.

Since I know that means anyone visiting my vlog starts getting hit
with a big download, I don't embed more than one video in a single
page, and my videos don't auto-play when they download, so people can
stop them from downloading (click ESC), or just not play them if they
don't want to.

[videoblogging] Respect

2006-02-09 Thread Paul Knight
Well I left but came back. I was getting a bit narked with the
constant "We love Rocketboom" crowd with their over slushiness and over
the top, lengthy threads on how wonderful RB is and how much money they
are making, it was getting to be like the "Hello Celebrity news yahoo
group. " Tina is right in saying you can learn a hell of a lot from
this group, and learn we all have, the collective is such that you
should be only one post away from having your problems dealt with.
I know I can be a bit of handful sometimes, it goes with the
territory, most of the time when I post a quirky comment, it is
supposed to be taken lightly. Obviously I have offended quite a few
people in here just lately, my excuses are pretty poor I am affraid, My
wife Rachel (alternativekitten) has had the worst few months with her
Multiple Sclerosis and I am finding it difficult to cope, but I know I
love her and I have promised to look after her. I have had a hard time
at work due to my mind being on other things and just lately I have
come down with the flu. This I think may have upset my film making
side and therefore I am feeling a little under confident.

I don't intend any of you to respond to this, in fact I would be highly
surprised if any of you read it, but at least I have done my bit.

Well...

a) I wrote a book on HTML, so I don't have a problem with it.
b) It's not that hard. No harder than a hyperlink.
c) I use a Blogger post template and just replace the video file URL

Yes, this is a great solution and roughly what we did at Rocketboom...

It's fifteen times as much code as a normal link. That counts as being
harder. You need both object and embed elements to get full support in
browsers, so you also need to put in the video URL twice.

That main issue here it that the QT plugin will be loaded once for each
video. Just loading it once is a significant memory increase. The pop-up
is a great solution for many. It only loads the QT plugin when it's
needed. It's not perfect for everyone - I like having the player in the
same window so I personally use some javascript-fu to have an image that
it replaced by the QT player when someone clicks to play. Different
solutions for different people. My computer is over 4 years old, poster
frames or not a page with 15 embedded QT players brings my computer to a
halt.

Yes, I also use javascript to write the object+embed+href code into a
div when the image for the video is clicked. This is how my videos
appear on my vlog sites off http://www.cirne.com. I'm going to make
that code into a Wordpress plugin.

Oh, it can't be that hard. I'm not even talking about the blog
whole-site template, which is more advanced. I mean the Post Template,
in the Formatting section of "Settings"? Where you can save a single
template for your posts?

I can't be the only person who uses them.

I like your ideas.

Can you give us your video-blog URL, I'd like to check it out.

Can you tell me what "link" field option in Blogger is? Is it just
using my video, & Feedburner will pick it
up? That's what I've been using up to now..

I was involved with an "A+B" LiveWebCast last weekend for the Parker
425 offroad race:

A) Information (via IRC/Iritrack)
live satellite vehicle-tracking

B) Entertainment (via me/Jumplive.com)
live multimedai: pics/videos

See

http://e-track.fr/irc
[ click on the lower-left icon, it produces a pop-up screen with a
flash-gallery of LIVE pics/videost at http://www.jumplive.com/
parker425/index.html, which "reflects" the LiveWebCast over the
Textamerica.com moblog at http://parker425.textamerica.com ]

You could select 4 vehicles to track, & see their icons move on the
map. When you clicked on one of them, there would be a screen giving
driver name & other info ("Information"). There was also a link
"Click HERE for pictures", which produces a pop-up screen of a
Textamerica.com moblog for that driver. Like:

http://vildosolaracing.textamerica.com
http://mcmillinracing.textamerica.com
http://jonesracing.textamerica.com
http://tscoracing.textamerica.com

In this situation, with a lot of drivers, I think pop-up screens are
appropriate.

If you have any ideas along your line of "anti pop-up screen", I'm
open to suggestion. Our "test" at the Parker 425 attracted a LOT of
favorable attention, & the word is big-time funding is very
imminent. Something like Rocketboom hopefully, or even bigger.
Think NASCAR business-model: "a bilboard on 4 wheels", where every
advertiser on the planet wants in for product-exposure.

The above is a LiveWebCast using "Mobile Blogging" (aka moblogging)
servers. The 2nd medium is Video-Blogging, where I have content at:

http://jumplive.blogspot.com

that is *syndicated* over iPod/iTunes (& hopefully TIVO). There are
race-videos & audio race-traffic available over iTunes ("free"). The
niche-sports market I'm working in (Offroad Racing) has NO live-TV
coverage, only 1 month tape-delayed episodes on an obscure/niche
cable channel. I think video-blogging (syndicated as a video-podcast
over iTunes) could be the answer to Offroad Racing's longtime dilemma.

I have a website

http://www.jumplive.com/parker06/index.html

which summarizes the 2 mediums (LiveWebCasting & iPod/iTunes
VoD/"Video on Demand") I've been playing with.

My post was motivated by wanting a more polished Look & Functionality
("Substance & Appearance"), to make it easier for people to browse
the video-blog. Your UI philosophy of:

"Simplicity is the Ultimate Sophistication"
-- Leonardo da Vinci

is something I'm into. That's how cellphones, iPod have become mass-
consumer devices: they have become "accessible to the masses". I
think is a really KEY idea, on getting video-blogging to TAKE-OFF.
The "Standard Model" (passive-TV/Print-Media) is old-fashioned,
tiresome, slow..whereas the "Alternative Model" (technology-based
mobile media solutions) could make a charge.

I talked to Technical Director of a major software firm (RealViz), &
he told me 80% of their time is spent on UI..User Interface. It has
to be user-friendly to the target market.

That's not fifteen times harder. I think if you find it fifteen times
harder to press CTRL-V (paste) twice, then you're doing something
wrong.

I don't use an object tag. Embed works fine. There's a noembed option
for browsers that don't support embed. There's a link to the video on
every post for anyone without the plugin. Yes, this means I paste the
URL into my web browser four times. Perhaps someday I'll write a
script that connects to the Blogger API that will let me put the URL
in and post it for me without me having to click "Paste" more than
once. As it is, it takes me about 15 seconds to actually post a vlog
once I've finished uploading the video.

> My computer is over 4 years old, poster
> frames or not a page with 15 embedded QT players brings my computer to a
> halt.

Great. I agree with you-- multiple players on a page is ugly and a
resource-hog. That is why (I'll say it again) I ONLY POST ONE VLOG PER
PAGE. One. ONLY one.

I realize that everyone learns videoblogging from freevlog, which
encourages the clickthrough method, but I find it clunky and annoying,
so I don't use it. My RSS feed works fine. I don't require anyone to
go to my site to view my vlogs. I'm not pushing my web interface on
you. In fact, I am the #1 visitor to my own videoblog, so it should
work the way I want it to.

I do something DIFFERENT, something which works great for me. It is a
way to embed movies into the blog page without having a linkthrough or
popup or some other clunky workaround-- the original question was how
to do that and avoid the multiple movie loading issue. I offered how
to avoid it while still having embedded movies.

Re: [videoblogging] multiple "" in a video-blog?

2006-02-09 Thread Stephanie Bryant
B. Yen,

When I mentioned that I just post one per page, here's how I do it:

Go to the main Blogger page and click the Change Settings icon (looks
like a cog). You'll be taken to the Basic section of the "Settings"
tab.
Click the "Formatting" link, still in the Settings tab.
The first field is "Show" and the number of days/weeks/months. Set
this to 1 day. Don't worry, when people download your feed, they can
get as many days as they want.

At the bottom of the page is the "Post Template." This is where you
can paste your embedded template in, so every time you go to post, you
will only have to change the URL and, if you want, the text
description, for your vlog.

Save your changes and republish your blog index.

>From then on, only post to the vlog once a day, if you only want 1
video to show at a time. You can backdate posts if you want, to put a
post on an empty day.

So, let's all do more vlogs about

Sure-- it's http://mortaine.blogspot.com

Here's my post template (I hope this comes through as text and not HTML):

It's actually easier than that, though you could also put a link at
the top of your entries (like I do in my post template) if you wanted
to do so.

In the other thread, I posted instructions for limiting Blogger to
showing just 1 day at a time. In the same settings (Formatting under
"Settings" tab), scroll down to "Show Link Field" and select Yes.

Then, in FeedBurner, turn on "SmartCast."

Make sure wherever you store your videos has the MIME type set up for
the video files correctly (needed no matter how you enclose them if
you use FeedBurner).

When you post your vlog, there will be an optional "Link" field in the
Blogger interface. Paste the URL of your video file there, in addition
to pasting it into your embedded tag.

Cool! I mean, racing isn't really my thing, but still neat!

Yeah, but my "post once a day" method might not work for you, either,
since you want multiple drivers available. One option would be to go
with your own blogging server of some kind, and then really just limit
it to one post per page, but then you're into blog servers and stuff.

One thing that you can do in your embedded videos is set the autoplay
to "no" so at least they won't all start playing when the page loads.
It still slows down the user's computer, but it won't also blare them
with sound and video unexpectedly.

I moblog at http://mortaine.typepad.com (all my blogs are in a page
listed in my email signature). My moblog is video from my cell phone.
Unfortunately, the cell phone had to go back to Nokia for replacement,
because a key feature (MMS) didn't work on it.

My husband doesn't do racing, but he's an offroader, and has mentioned
this lack of coverage in the past. Sadly, that's common with the less
"pro" sports.

[videoblogging] Re: Respect

2006-02-09 Thread Rob Reedy
Paul,

It sounds like you have had some challenges, and it is
understandable that you may not be at your best right now... but it
is my hope for you that this is only temporary... I do hope that
both you and Rachel will be feeling better soon.

I do not wish to offend in any way, but please know that in the
exercise of my faith, I will be asking for blessings to be given to
you and yours so that your heart will not be hardened to this group
or the world.

Your wife's M.S., and her poor health as a result, are in NO WAY
an "excuse"... but I would certainly say it is a "reason" that you
may not be as cheerful as one might hope.

You said "...but I know I love her and I have promised to look after
her. I have had a hard time at work due to my mind being on other
things and just lately I have come down with the flu. This I think
may have upset my film making side and therefore I am feeling a
little under confident."

Relax my friend (and I say that so easily even though we have never
before spoken), the time will come when things improve... till then,
just know that this community does acknowledge you and looks for
better times to come.

Thanks for your additions.

Rob Reedy

[videoblogging] Re: Respect

2006-02-09 Thread Gena
I think part of the problem is that Americans get all of the polite UK
comedy shows like "Keeping Up Appearances", "As Time Goes By" and all
the other high foo-foo stuff. The we don't know or understand about
non-pc humor or what real UK humor/joshing.

I saw the BBC video of one of Monty Python gang funeral. His friends
were grieving but they roasted him like a pig over coals. I was
surprised until I realized it was a loving back of the hand and full
mug of beer send off.

If you are open to it why not record three minutes of how you feel at
the moment. No one need ever see it. Not asking you to post it. But as
a diary of this moment in time in your life. Or write it in a note book.

On a more pompous and absolutely Californian inspired note: You are
learning life lessons you had no intention to sign up for; what does
true love and commitment mean, how to fight invisible enemies, and a
special tutorial session on the dark night of the soul.

I can offer you that living in the current day is okay and somedays
you might want to take it in 60 minute chunks. As Janis Joplin say "as
we learn on the terrain it is all the same f***kin day" man." Find joy
in each day - especially the bad ones.

Either way - I like you stuff except for the dance naked plastic
women. Now when you have some anatomically correct dancing naked
plastic men let me know and I will put the word out. Size does not
matter but accuracy and craftmanship is appreciated.

Cheers,

Gena

You know, Gena is right. This is EXACTLY the time you should be
turning the camera on, this is what we're interested, you and your

Don't wait until you're stable again and shoot a boring cat video

[videoblogging] re: Respect

2006-02-09 Thread Carl Weaver
Jay:

Very well said. Very wise.

We as a group are subject to the same dynamics as any large group with lots
of different personalities. We have to make a very conscious effort to be
supportive and respectful, especially as we grow. As Jay pointed out, and as
we have seen, respect does not just come into being. It has to be nurtured
and developed.

For those who don't like the idea of advertising in vlogs, remember that
this is brand new. A $40,000 sale today does not mean that the price will
stay there. With the attention this is getting, we really don't know how
advertisers will value such a service. It may become more or less pricey to
advertise on vlogs. We may all be able to get a cut somehow someday. Maybe
not. Perhaps this is a one-time thing for Rocketboom. We don't know. But
let's wait and see what happens before casting judgments. And before saying
that advertising is negative, let's cut the swoosh off our Nikes and the "W"
pockets off our Wranglers. Nowadays most of us are walking advertisements
for something, whether it's what we wear, consume or what we say. The key
isn't whether to advertise, it's being conscious of what we are advertising
and how we do it.

Just my opinion.

Thanks,
Carl

[videoblogging] Re: Respect and respectfully submitting this....

2006-02-09 Thread Rob Reedy
Richard,

I HOPE that was said "tongue in cheek," but I do not know you, and I
shall not judge... but if it were YOU in his position... could you
so easily perform?

I actually did make a statement in one of my first video's that
could be applicable to this very situation... and I hope all will
bear with me and really look at what I am about to propose.

I believe that ALL of us that are able, should make documentary
videos, even if not for general view... perhaps just for documented
information for your descendants. Think about this... might you be
interested if you came across a book or diary, written by one of
your great great grandparents when one of their loved ones was dying
of Typhoid or diphtheria or some disease that we now have cures for?

Perhaps in 100 years, a great great grand child would find
tremendous strength and courage that they had never known after
seeing the strength of your convictions... to see that you had the
love and compassion for your wife to stick it out with her when all
the rest of our "disposable society" might more easily walk away
through divorce.

Yes, if you have the strength... make your VBlog... even if it is
not "the best"... no one says you have to share it right now... but
you may be making something that your future sons and daughters will
look back upon and say "WOW... what they went through back then"

I'm Rob Reedy, and those are my thoughts.

No, it was not tongue in cheek. I wasn't criticising Paul, or
trivialising his situation. I was simply saying: turn on the camera.

One of my favourite videos of the past year, was when Aaron lost his
little girl. He had the camera on at the time, and it was so
emotional. I couldn't stop crying watching it.

We all publish video of ourselves to the web, because we want people
to watch us. We all try to watch and narrate good stories, because we
like the emotional or thought provoking journey or outcome. We like
to cry, we like to laugh.

After a half dozen videos of someone doing what they do, I want to
see more of the real world in which they live, and learn more about
them. Most of us aren't actors, so by erecting a wall between the on
screen persona and the real you, or filtering anything remotely
personal, you're just watering down your end result, and probably
making people unsubscribe, because there's millions of other people
to watch doing the same thing.

I don't know if I could "easily perform", but I could easily invoke
my online persona, for sure, and as a videoblogger, I've learnt to
mostly ignore cameras being on around me. We're documenting history,
and I can't even begin to imagine my descendants in 100 years seeing
me on video, being emotional, being fragile, being me...

I can't speak for Richard but it seemed like a real suggestion to me. I agree that it's good to document stuff for the future and I also think that putting something like that on a vlog now could have real value for people (even strangers) if only to feel like they're not alone.
It's probably not easy for most people to do such a thing. Which is exactly why someone would appreciate it. People (even some in this group) have been vulnerable on their vlogs before and I'm sure people will continue to be.
