[videoblogging] Press pass advice

2006-04-03 Thread Scott Nicholson
Greetings!

I do the vlog Board Games with Scott, which is all about the world
of modern board gaming.

I'm hoping to film an episode at an event in Germany in October, and
am attempting to get a press pass. I was told I would need an
International Press Pass to do so.

I'm not affiliated with a larger organization; it's just me making the
vlog.

Have any of you dealt with this successfully? If so, how?

Thanks!

I included the link to Technorati as suggested and I even created a

not sure what else I have to do to make it show up on Technorati.

[videoblogging] Re: RSS feeds for videobloggingweek2006

2006-04-03 Thread Andy Carvin
I've been experimenting with creating an RSS digest based on both the
technorati tag and a technorati search term for videobloggingweek2006.

http://app.feeddigest.com/digest3/GRNY76OUZ0.html

Neither works well because it only displays a summary of each post,
not the post itself. The only way I could get it to work would be to
compile a list of all the rss feeds of bloggers participating in the
event. But that should work; I did it last year at www.wsisblogs.org
for the UN WSIS summit and we aggregated around 30 blogs onto one
blog. The max I can add to one feed is 60 vloggers.

2006-04-03 Thread Andy Carvin
Please add me to the list. But rather than asking people to announce
themselves and sign up, wouldn't it suffice to just have everyone
tag their videos for technorati, then collect a list of contributors
from that? I'm just concerned that asking people to register
themselves is adding an extra layer to this, and could exclude people
who just happened to miss your email, like I almost did.

OK, I realize it's already tomorrow in some parts of the world, so
 let's get started!

A lot of folks contributed time, space, announcements... it's turning
 into a bit of a hodge-podge of leadership. Nonetheless, I said I'd
compile stuff, and I am doing so.

 DATES:
April 3-9 Monday through Sunday. Post a vlog each day for all 7 days.
If you come in late, post a vlog each day and maybe catch up on the
weekend. If you stop vlogging halfway through the week, catch up on
 the weekend. No excuses!

 BLOG:

Not sure if this is just announcements or videos. Steve?

 BANNERS:
 http://michaelverdi.com/vbw06
 http://vlogmatic.com/vbweek2006.htm

 TAGGING:
It will make the project much easier if you tag your videos, at
 *least* with a Technorati tag.

Peter and Devlon: can we set up a (public?) Mefeedia feed with the
listed participants as the to be watched list? Is that possible? If
so, then folks could tag them themselves while watching in Mefeedia,
and it would set up the RSS feed quickly for me (another vlogger's
helpfully given a possible space for the public feed as well).

 On Technorati:
 http://technorati.com/tag/videobloggingweek2006

To tag your video, add this to your post:
 a href=http://technorati.com/tag/videobloggingweek2006; rel=tag
 videobloggingweek2006/a

[Yes, there are a gazillion ways to do this. This is one of them.]

If you like, you could also add a vloggingdangerously tag, if you're
specifically taking risks this week for your vlog.

 On MeFeedia;
 http://mefeedia.com/tags/videobloggingweek2006/

 To tag your video:
 Sign in to Mefeedia.com
 Subscribe to your own feed.
Go to Watch to view your video queue.
Click a video in your queue.
Click Tag this to tag the video.
Type videobloggingweek2006 in the field and click the TAG! button.

 Add yourself to Eyespot:
 http://eyespot.com/groups/videobloggingweek2006
[I'm not sure what the value is to this; if you don't add yourself
this week, is it OK to do so next week?]

 DANGEROUS!

During the week, I'll email the dangerous ideas to the list.
Everyone is welcome to contribute suggestions. No one is required to
follow any of the dangerous suggestions, or even to vlog dangerously.
You determine for yourself what is danger. The idea is to take a
risk of some kind with your vlog. Perhaps that's a risk that you take
personally and then videoblog, or perhaps it's a risk that you take
 involving your vlog.

First dangerous idea, inspired by Naked Verdi and others: Vlog your
daily shower or bath. How much you show or don't is up to you. If you
vlog yourself x-rated, PLEASE provide some kind of disclaimer. Cause,
you know, some people have small children or weak stomaches. ;)

 CURRENT PARTICIPANTS:
We'll have a single page feed for all of these, as soon as it's set up
(working on it). If you're participating but absolutely don't want to
be in a web-based feed, let me know.

Also, please check to make sure you are listed and I have your
videoblog's URL and your name spelled correctly. If I missed you, it
was not a deliberate slight, so speak up, please.

Hi Casey,

It sounds like you need to manually insert the enclosure tag.

Here's how you do it in wordpress:
1. Sign in to admin and go to the post in question
2. Scroll down to custom fields
3. for 'Key' type in enclosure. And, for 'Value' type in the direct
path to your video.
4. Save and publish changes. Your video should show up.

Honestly, though, finding dangerous material that can be done around
the constraints of a dayjob is pretty tricky. What other ideas have
 people had?

I totally agree. I own a small business in a small town where everyone
knows everyone. So, my 'dangerous' vlogging will probably be fairly tame.

But, if we think outside of the box we can come up with fun stuff. For
example if I were to sing and dance that would definitely be
dangerous, as I would look like a total AZZ for the whole world to see!

2006-04-03 Thread Stephanie Bryant
The sign up thing is just so I can add a list of vlogs to an RSS
feed. Yes, it'd be great if everyone tagged their videos. I
volunteered to collect everyone's videoblogs into one place so we
could all watch them. You don't have to sign up. It's optional, like
the dangerously part is optional or, for that matter, tagging is
optional.

  let's get started!

No excuses!

Not sure if this is just announcements or videos. Steve?

  BANNERS:
  http://michaelverdi.com/vbw06
  http://vlogmatic.com/vbweek2006.htm

  TAGGING:
It will make the project much easier if you tag your videos, at
  *least* with a Technorati tag.

Peter and Devlon: can we set up a (public?) Mefeedia feed with the
listed participants as the to be watched list? Is that possible? If
so, then folks could tag them themselves while watching in Mefeedia,
and it would set up the RSS feed quickly for me (another vlogger's
helpfully given a possible space for the public feed as well).

  On Technorati:
  http://technorati.com/tag/videobloggingweek2006

To tag your video, add this to your post:
  a href=http://technorati.com/tag/videobloggingweek2006; rel=tag
  videobloggingweek2006/a

[Yes, there are a gazillion ways to do this. This is one of them.]

If you like, you could also add a vloggingdangerously tag, if you're
specifically taking risks this week for your vlog.

  On MeFeedia;
  http://mefeedia.com/tags/videobloggingweek2006/

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Vlogging dangerously...brainstorming session

2006-04-03 Thread Stephanie Bryant
Monique, there are other dangerous ideas you can do, ones that
aren't risky for your business or reputation. Consider also some
technically dangerous vlogs, like use a commercially-biased product
placement in your vlog. Dangerous in the vlogosphere, but utterly
tame to your friends and neighbors.

On 4/3/06, gottadiva [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Honestly, though, finding dangerous material that can be done around
the constraints of a dayjob is pretty tricky. What other ideas have
  people had?

I totally agree. I own a small business in a small town where everyone
knows everyone. So, my 'dangerous' vlogging will probably be fairly tame.

But, if we think outside of the box we can come up with fun stuff. For
example if I were to sing and dance that would definitely be
dangerous, as I would look like a total AZZ for the whole world to see!

[videoblogging] Video Submission Service Idea

2006-04-03 Thread lishisman
Greetings... Vlogweek very cool... Our New studio did not get
finished over the weekend, and I am bummed, Such is life...

Warning - I am not a good writer, when it comes to me putting
something on paper, alot of time my thoughts get mangled, I am much
better in person... I think way faster than I type, so I will try to
convey and idea... discussing it here first before acting, and
hoping that I can get some constructive, open minded, feedback from
valued members here.

I have an Idea...

Trying to be a productive member and all, I would like to build or
be part of a new website/program dedicated to video submission. I
have *some* capital, resources and input, however I cannot do it
alone.

It is understood by me that there are already MANY services that one
vlogger can upload a video to and get seen... however, people like
me, who vlog daily could spend a great deal of time, just uploading
to the many services out there...

A service needs to be developed that you could upload your daily
video to once, and the service would broadcast your video the
other video services for which do not have RSS feeds, but force you
to upload ... What really gets me about the current group of
services for video distribution is that in order to gain the most
exposure you need to set up no less than five different user
accounts, and upload your video up to at least that many services,
my videos are around 40 mb, can you imagine how long it would take
me to upload to just 5 of them? Plus, compile, shoot, edit, create
webpages, post in a blog, ping the feeds that arent in feedburner,
and post to this board? It is just crazy...

Here are some possible solutions...

Choice one
ALL video upload services allow for linking to source video that is
already hosted somewhere. OR allow RSS linking to source vid.

Pros-
1. It would be easier for people like me to have content listed in
many services, quickly.
2. My daily video would only consume 30 mb of webspace TOTAL.
3. Video Services would have more content with less server overhead.

Cons-
1. Video services would not have as much exclusive content.
2. Video Services would not be able to control the availability of a
video or the bandwidth that each video's hosting could handle.
3. The abosolute tracking would be sketchy.
4. Those video services that currently CONVERT video formats for you
would be very limited by not having the source file in hand. Like
for Mobile phones, ipods, and such.

Choice two
Have a video broadcast service... this could be a web application,
Or more intriging, it could be a windows application like googles
video uploader.
You upload to one place... when this happens it is concurrently
uploaded to many other places...

Pros-
1. Less work for the content provider
2. This could be a paid service... make money$$
3. Maximum exposure could be obtained with minimal effort
4. Video service would still have the source files.
5. Video services would likely become allies with such service for
the content alone, and would likely allow a service to sign up new
user accounts.
6. In the above scenario this service would become a one stop shop
for new vloggers...Got a video?, get it out there! vlogblaster.com
sets you up with accounts for the most popular video submission
services out there, AND uploads your video for you, Blast your vlog
today!

Cons-
1. A 30mb would eat up a ton of server space on the WEB, in an
example a 30 mb file uploaded to
2. The machine running the application, the content providers
computer OR the server that the application os run on, would have
all it could do for the better part of an hour. OR the Vlogger
community could build a SETI type network to handle such tasks.
3. Script would have to written for each video upload service.

Personally I see choice two as the only option, I think that it
would be reasonable to suggest that 5 services could be targetted,
with more development slated for the future.

Now I know for a fact that I currently consume in the range of 150mb
of server space in lala land for just ONE 30mb video. Each and every
day. Because it has to get uploaded to so many places. This could be
bad in the long haul... Liberals against server space... video
wasteland... I can see the march on washington now.

Google video, akimbo, youtube, stupid videos, cnet, and MANY more I
am sure I a missing some big ones here... your help as to which five
could be targetted would be helpful.

I look forward to your thoughts, and suggestions on whether such a
service is feasible, or even if it already exists...

Now, I did not sign up as a vlog week 2006 participant, but I do
however, do a daily video anyway, I plan to in the spirit of this
week do a weekend edition of unzappedtv... you will not however see
me in the shower or bathtub.
Our First coorespondant from argentina is on the show today, with a
funny commercial that FORD is running...

PEACE OUT!
Jason

It's just too bad we can't get something that's not labor intensive to
work properly. Technorati's RSS feed has only summaries, not full
posts, so it gives crappy results when you make a digest or use the
RSS feed in FireANT or iTunes. Blip and Mefeedia are better, but they
require people to go in and tag manually, right?

Here's what I have so far from the aggregate rss feeds posted to the list.

I could make a better feed with individual vlogger's rss feeds added,
but can only do a max of 60 vloggers. (I might have said that already.

Re: [videoblogging] Video Submission Service Idea

2006-04-03 Thread Michael Verdi

I understand that people like to put their stuff in places like YouTube because they think they'll get noticed there by the hordes of people looking for the latest cool TV clip. That's fine but personally I have 2 main reasons why I'll never be interested in that.
1. Check the terms of use: YouTube, Google Video, DailyMotion for example all require you to license your video to them in such a way that they can commercially exploit it. Why give this to them in exchange for hosting when you host your videos yourself or for free on The Archive and
Blip.tv without giving anything away? Also, if you intend to use anyone's creative commons licensed material and then upload it there you may be violating the terms of their licence (this is the case for any non-commercial and/or share alike license).
2. By buying into the idea that these places are portals you are helping to set up another version of what we already have in the TV and Film world - namely distribution controlled by a few sources. The revolutionary thing about the Internet and videoblogging is that YOU can distribute your own work. You don't have to rely on a middleman. If you want to be on TV or Film you have to play the TV or Film game. If you videoblog you don't have to put up with that shit. You have the power to do it yourself.
Here are my tips for building an audience:1. Make great content.2. Make great content.3. Make great content.4. Put your great content in a blog and add descriptions and links relevant to your great content.
5. Make sure you have an RSS 2.0 feed with enclosures so people can subscribe to your great content.6. Make great content regularly (you don't have to do it everyday but don't dissapear for months at a time).7. Interact with your audience via the comments on your videoblog.
8. Watch and comment on stuff you like (they might like your stuff too). That's it for now. That should get you started.-VerdiOn 4/3/06,

I have an Idea...Trying to be a productive member and all, I would like to build orbe part of a new website/program dedicated to video submission. Ihave *some* capital, resources and input, however I cannot do it
alone. It is understood by me that there are already MANY services that onevlogger can upload a video to and get seen... however, people likeme, who vlog daily could spend a great deal of time, just uploading
to the many services out there...A service needs to be developed that you could upload your dailyvideo to once, and the service would broadcast your video theother video services for which do not have RSS feeds, but force you
to upload ... What really gets me about the current group ofservices for video distribution is that in order to gain the mostexposure you need to set up no less than five different useraccounts, and upload your video up to at least that many services,
my videos are around 40 mb, can you imagine how long it would takeme to upload to just 5 of them? Plus, compile, shoot, edit, createwebpages, post in a blog, ping the feeds that arent in feedburner, and post to this board? It is just crazy...
Here are some possible solutions...Choice oneALL video upload services allow for linking to source video that isalready hosted somewhere. OR allow RSS linking to source vid.Pros-1. It would be easier for people like me to have content listed in
many services, quickly.2. My daily video would only consume 30 mb of webspace TOTAL.3. Video Services would have more content with less server overhead.Cons-1. Video services would not have as much exclusive content.
2. Video Services would not be able to control the availability of avideo or the bandwidth that each video's hosting could handle.3. The abosolute tracking would be sketchy.4. Those video services that currently CONVERT video formats for you
would be very limited by not having the source file in hand. Likefor Mobile phones, ipods, and such.Choice twoHave a video broadcast service... this could be a web application,Or more intriging, it could be a windows application like googles
video uploader. You upload to one place... when this happens it is concurrentlyuploaded to many other places...Pros-1. Less work for the content provider2. This could be a paid service... make money$$
3. Maximum exposure could be obtained with minimal effort4. Video service would still have the source files.5. Video services would likely become allies with such service forthe content alone, and would likely allow a service to sign up new
user accounts.6. In the above

with blip and tag it videobloggingweek2005 you can make sure those
tags get picked up by the other services by checking Include tags in

That will send out the tags you choose in blip to your blog in the

Technorati already recorded your blog post yesterday with the other tag,
after you changed it Technorati probably don't re-index your blog post.
That's why it's not showing up. To see if this is the explanation make a
new blog post - if that one shows up...

[videoblogging] Re: Video Submission Service Idea

2006-04-03 Thread mikehudack
Hey guys,

I'm following this thread with a smile on my face, because a lot of
what you're talking about is what blip is all about. We actually
already submit your video to a bunch of different places (Yahoo Video
Search, Mefeedia, the Internet Archive, your own blog, Flickr,
del.icio.us) and we'd like to add more.

The only thing keeping us from cross-posting to, say, YouTube, is
license restrictions. We're not sure if we can get away with it from
a legal perspective.

That said, we've been looking into cross-posting to Google Video
pretty actively and I think we may move towards that in the next
couple weeks.

What other services would you like us to auto submit to?

services will be excluded... The whole issue is simply that I do not

I am not buying into anything as of yet, one very distinct

may indeed be something viewed on a cell phone as a channel or on a
Media Center PC. I would like a service to upload and place my
content in these locations without much effort. Some services
convert this content and distibute it for you... The actual choices
on who to use and which portal will have to be left up to your
discretion, the resposibilty you have as a content provider to not
infringe upon someone elses copyright is still yours...

I may have different motivations than you, as a matter of I am sure

Also, btw, if you want your blip tags to flow through to Technorati

You can use either spaces or commas, it's up to you. Our software

Mike, do you guys still have an open OPML?and an RSS for latest videos?I like how blip does this spreading of media. very cool! very important! It is probably the best example to show that Blip is on your side.
They are not building walls... they are leveling the playing field... making your media 'very available' ;-)btw, on the channel level... your vlog and feed address if added to
vlogdir.com, then vlogdir pings google search engine so it helps you get discovered more easily (that plus the regular google/vlogdir ranking stuff). so its important to use a servic elike blip that helps to spread your media and it helps to list your actual vlogs and feeds in directories that also spread them outward.

a legal perspective. That said, we've been looking into cross-posting to Google Videopretty actively and I think we may move towards that in the nextcouple weeks. What other services would you like us to auto submit to?

Maybe because of license restrictions and policies some video services will be excluded... The whole issue is simply that I do not want to have to upload my video more than once to be listed where
the general viewing public will find it... Although, I do use google video, I am not yet concerned with anyone stealing my content and monetizing from my stuff. Not that I wont be soon.

truth, is that by adding your video to portals, you are not giving up your right to distribute your video yourself, your just extending your reach. The future for me is that one day UnzappedTV
may indeed be something viewed on a cell phone as a channel or on a Media Center PC. I would like a service to upload and place my content in these locations without much effort. Some services convert this content and distibute it for you... The actual choices
on who to use and which portal will have to be left up to your discretion, the resposibilty you have as a content provider to not infringe upon someone elses copyright is still yours...
I may have different motivations than you, as a matter of I am sure I do, and that is cool, that is what makes this so great! Thank you so much for your thoughts... As far as your suggestions go... I do all but 1,2,3 but I am working
on it... ;) Jason --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Michael Verdi michael@ wrote:

So, Amy and I are having a hard time coming up with dangerous vlogging
ideas that we can fairly easily do. We also don't want to do something
too asinine or juvenile (ala Jackass or Trigger Happy TV stuff) because
that's so farr of the usual vision of our vlog.

I'm sure there are others with a little creative block, too, so how
about a little brainstorming? What, to you, embodies vlogging
dangerously?

We're already doing a piece on a gay rodeo going on down here. That's
pretty inherrently dangerous. Other things we were thinking about...

...trying to evangelize the great Flying Spaghetti Monster.
...doing a glamorbomb and vlogging the results.

Honestly, though, finding dangerous material that can be done around
the constraints of a dayjob is pretty tricky. What other ideas have
people had?

[videoblogging] Re: Video Submission Service Idea

2006-04-03 Thread Bill Streeter
Yeah you can do this. Easy cheesey.

I have some thoughts about Verdi's comments about YouTube and
DailyMotion. I agree with everything he says about them. But I've
discovered that many users of YouTube and DailyMotion get pretty
defensive about their favorite services. Probably because they
aren't just places to upload and host video. They're communities,
much like Flickr, Myspace, and others. So people feel more
emotionally connected to them in ways that transend mere utility.
When you attack them (or even if you are just presieved to attack
them) they take it personally because these services represent the
places where they have a lot of friends. So it's good to keep this
in mind when discussing them. It's a little deeper than just putting
your videos somewhere where they are going to get a lot of views,
and free hosting. People are building whole networks of friends in
these spaces and it makes it hard for them to even think about
droping them for another service.

Just food for thought I guess. I don't have much more to say about
it. I do like the idea of posting teaser videos on there though. But
I agree letting these services become the definition of internet
video is dangerous.

[videoblogging] Press Pass for Citizen Journalists

2006-04-03 Thread Steve
Im a rookie vlogger, and am wanting cover a music convention here in
Nashville. How does a citizen journalist acquire a Press pass? Beyond
this convention, is there a governing body or association I should
become a member, that would make it easier for me to acquire press
credentials for future opportunities?

[videoblogging] Re: Press Pass for Citizen Journalists

2006-04-03 Thread Casey McKinnon
Steve,

As a citizen's journalist you should be able to get in to
conventions under most press pases. The best thing to do is to
contact the person in charge of dealing with press and ask if they
extend press passes to video-podcasters/videobloggers. If so, they
will probably want proof that you are who you say you are, so ask them
what sort of credentials/documents they would like you to bring upon
registration.

Communication is always the key... most of the people at these
conventions just want free promotion, so they would be happy to accept
new mediums of communication. Just be professional and ask questions
to clarify what you need to get in.

Good luck,
Casey McKinnon

Hmm... I HAVE a skateboard... I used to skate to work every morning...
In the heat of summer, I often did it in a mini skirt, bikini top,
knee socks and skater shoes... unfortunately, I don't do any tricks so
I doubt my stats would ollie too high!

Then again... we're supposed to do something dangerous this week...
perhaps I should work on my tricks and break my neck trying! Hell,
with this nice spring weather, it might be fun!

Hi Guys,

To contribute to the vlogging community I quickly put together

designed to inspire vloggers everywhere. Then participants will enter
the challenge by posting a comment with a direct link to their entry.

Site visitors will vote for their favroite entry, and the winner will
be honored with a Shout Out as Slammin' Vlogger of the Week.

Right now my voting system is low tech, but within the next week or
two I will have a fully automated, advanced voting system in place.

So if you want another place to strut your stuff, go to
http://www.vlogchallenge.com and enter the challenge. For the Week of
April 07, 2006 the challenge is 'WET'.

BTW - the whole 'vlog challenge' idea is inspired by the great

Number 8/9 (accidental double post)I was pissed, in that after 4 days of posting to this forum I got ZERO responses. ref. 36752 and 36754
Numbers 10 WAS the ONLY so-called test I did that was marketing related... I posted "DO NOT WATCH MY VIDEO TODAY" And you know what I figured out? This was the first time I got responses out of any of you. I don't even know if I would consider it a test. It was just.. "hey, I havent recieved any responses so what the hell? If I tell them not to watch will they?". Ref. 36916
Number11 was another introductary post, that I did simply because I had gained some attention and wanted people to know me a little. This was the infamous self admission of me being a spammer, a failed attempt at humor... Which obviously no one got. Ref. 36949
Do any you honestly think I dont know the difference between spam and not spam? If so, you are just plain STUPID. And wasting your time spelling it out for everyone here, is just STUPID too...

Yes ladies and gentlemen. This is how not to win friends

I am going to guess that you are the type of person that

As you are seeing, that kinda thing doesnt work too well and the more and

Re: [videoblogging] Fwd: Announcing RSS feeds on Google Video (alpha)

2006-04-03 Thread WWWhatsup
Thanks for taking the effort. I'll pass your comments
on to the folks at google.

They do, for ech video, offer higher quality downloads, somewhat
capriciously it seems, including iPod or PSP - it's possible that eventually,
but not too soon, they will get around to using mrss to allow multiple
enclosures..

But an alternative rss feed of aggregator-friemdly versions of the videos would
be a nice
feature

Thanks for posting this Joly.

I see from looking at your feed that feedburner is not turning any of
the media RSS elements into a standard RSS 2.0 enclosure, so I'm
guessing your feed won't work in iTune, Fireant or any other video
aggregator that doesn't support Media RSS.

Just for the heck of it I decided to try to put it through Mefeedia.
I would appear mefeedia does recognize the first media RSS specified
item which is Flash, but due to google's extremely long urls mefeedia
truncates teh url causeing it to be useless.

I'm recommending to Peter and devlon that we add support for google's
longer urls and in the future we will hopefully at some point in the
future mefeedia will have full support for alternative media RSS
specified formats like MP4 and WMV so that a user can choose their
preferred format.

[videoblogging] Vlogging exposure...

2006-04-03 Thread Ron Watson

Thanks for the reply, Andreas, Stephanie...Spamming vs ExposureI am happy that you two chimed in on RSS as exposure and the issue of spamming the list. Good points. I was unaware that there was any historical thing to Vloggers Unite, as I delete a whoe bunch of stuff from this list; no offense, all, but it is just too much. I look for things that are of interest to me and read about them, and check out things that sound as if they may beinteresting, or informative. So I just deleted his 'spam' emails because they were not of interest to me. Such is life in a 2000+ person group. But that doesn't change the fact that most of us noobs (I was a noob once, but I have been retired for a month or so, so I now am a veteran. Besides, I have seen a bunch of you guys on video for several months now and read your posts, and I feel as if I know you all.) are under the impression that asking people to watch your vids is bad.  The prostrations of people on this list when they so much as mention their own Vlog or a piece they did that they are proud of (...thanks Steph...) is really off putting and it teaches the new batch of noobs, the newest 3000 vlogggers on mefeedia, that you should not talk about your vlog on this list, or it should be a special occasion kind of thing. I know that most of us are on the same page when it comes to this issue, and we think it is alright to share our work with this group, which is great, but that is not the perception from the population of the list as a whole. As illustrated by the fear that writing about a piece of ours must give people to make them look at their shoelaces when they try to get exposure for their work by asking the videoblogging list to check it out. So, from now on I am going to bring out all stops when it comes to my pushing you all to my Vlog. Bells as whistles, ALL CAPS!!, SPLASH PAGE!  Flash! WOO HOO! When I want you all to see something, I am going to SCREAM IT! Marketing will be my middle name. Amway ain't got shit on me!And for all of you who don't like it, to paraphrase Jason, "Screw you!" Hit delete and don't watch it.What would happen if we all did that? I think it would be pretty cool. It sure would be more fun, and I think we would learn more. the MetaI train dogs, so I am always looking for ways to put the rotten behaviors on cue so we can then keep them in check. This is a good example of that kind of flexibility in group communications. So funny... what we learn from our dogs.Cheers,  Ron WatsonPawsitive Vybe Canines12 E Bridge St Suite GRockford, MI 49341[EMAIL PROTECTED]301.524.6670http://pawsitivevybe.comhttp://k9disc.comhttp://k9disc.blip.tv

 Subject: [videoblogging] Vlogging dangerously...brainstorming session
 Date: Sun, 02 Apr 2006 17:24:48 -0400

So, Amy and I are having a hard time coming up with dangerous
vlogging
ideas that we can fairly easily do.

What other ideas have
 people had?

replied to Ron's message, or should have replied privately, because I
was actually upset over something completely unrelated at the time and
unable to just drop it.

But then this vitriol.

Anyway, I've had to cut out a lot of my initial reaction to this-- the
last paragraph will explain why.

 Stephanie,
You are the epitomy of hipocracy... You potray me to be some evil
martketeer, yet you are marketing a product that anybody with half a brain
 could figure out for free.

It's a for Dummies book. If the folks reading it wanted to figure it
out by digging around the Internet, they would, and in many cases do
anyway. But they also would like to have someone else dig around for
it and print the information for them in a handy package. I don't hold
a lot of illusions about my book, here. It's not Hemingway, for god's
sake.

I sure it will make a wonderful refence three
years from now when every point in the book is moot.

Computer books don't have a long shelf life. That's not really news.

While I am on the subject of your useless banter... who died and left you
boss of this group? Who asked you to determine what this group is, what it
likes and dislikes? The difference between spam and not spam... it is all
YOUR opinion you have no right to speak for a group of over 2000...

[Careful, Jason. Godwin is watching]

I believe in the post to which you are replying, I even said I do not
personally have a problem with... Actually, I think there's only one
point where I didn't preface my comment by stating that it was my
opinion, but since the previous remark had been stated as opinion, I
figured it was obvious.

By the way, I believe we both have supporters here. I'm sure you've
been emailed privately with as many hang in there''s, as I've
received go get 'em's, so perhaps neither of us can claim to speak
for more than ourselves?

your book is probably great... and on impulse
I probably would have bought it, I certainly would veer completely in the
opposite direction... at this point I might even burn it on site.

Well, books aren't sacred. Actually, I secretly hope you hold a great
big book-burning party for it. I could use the press.

Oh and for the record, I emailed Steve Garfield from his vlog long before I
knew he was even a member here or who any members here were to be honest.

As stated earlier: I'm sorry I even mentioned that. I did not,
however, feel it necessary to drag Steve into this by name.

Thanks to those who understand, and a big fuck you to those who offend or
are offended, I am just tired of this shit and want to move on.

Then move on already.

I should have vlogged this... by the way hold my beer while I go vomit, I'll
 be back in a moment.

Yeah, you probably should have vlogged it. That would have been
interesting. Not unique, but interesting.

Jason, I will make you a deal, if you've even read this far, and I'm
going to ask that everyone else who's engaged you adversarially in
this discussion to consider the same deal. I'm going to stick to
posting about vlogweek more or less until after the 9th. And I won't
reply to anything you say, and you won't reply to anything I say (erm,
though if you're in vlogweek, let's just keep it civil), for a 10 day
cooling off period (of course you could reply to this, cause I know
you want the last word and anyway, how can you accept a truce if you
don't reply?). I know I, for one, would rather cool off and come back
and meet on less hostile footing in a week and a half than have to
muddle through more flamewars.

Re: [videoblogging] Travelling with the camcorder

2006-04-03 Thread Jen Simmons
Typically, security wants laptops pulled out to ride through the x-ray machine by themselves. All the other electronic equipment says in their bags.

I went through one time (post 9-11) with a set of mid-size speakers, a digital still camera, a dv video camera, and an external harddrive all piled in a stack in one bag. They just looked at it for a bit, and then moved on. I've never heard of the x-rays hurting any of the electronics involved, and never had any problems myself.

Last summer, I wanted to them to hand check 15 hours of mini-dv tape I'd shot and not have it go through x-ray (I mean 3 weeks and 6,000 miles of travel for those 15 tapes -- didn't want to be too careful...) but they wouldn't hear of it (in Central Europe), so the tapes went through. No problems. I'd actually forgotten about it until now.

So -- send it all through the machine I much prefer to carry-on all my equipment rather than check under the plane since luggage-lost / item-theft / getting-dropped-too-hard all worry me more than the x-ray machine. When I've got too much equipment to check it all, I take it in super-strong locked cases that could be dropped off the back of a truck and still cradle the equipment safely. Have you ever watched the way they luggage gets handled? Besides, these days much of the checked baggage is x-rayed too.

Have a great trip!!

Anyone know the airport rules about camcorders on the airplane? Do we
check them, do we carry them on, and most importantly, what is the
protocol when it comes to the x-ray machine? Do I let it go on the
belt or do I hand it to a guard and explain that it's video

 wasty radioactive rays

Thanks in advance for the input!!
