[Videolib] Gently used Gemtracs media shelves

2010-12-02 Thread Laura Fu
**Please pardon cross-postings**

Anyone in need of some Gemtracs audio/video storage shelving? A friend of mine
from Towers Productions (http://www.towersproductions.com/), a Chicago area
production house, is renovating their tape library and transferring a lot of
content. They are selling their gently used and "in great condition" shelves,
and they need to get them out by January 31, 2011. Here are the details:

* "walk-in" type storage

* Gemtrac shelves: http://www.russbassett.com/gemtrac/gav-4mm.htm

* 7 units configured for small beta tapes, 4" deep (holds over 3,500
tapes each)

* 1 unit for large beta tapes, 7" deep (holds over 1,500 tapes)

* $15K-$20K brand new

* Asking Price: $6K each or best offer, especially if you take them all

* Buyer handles moving

* Ideally by January 31 but they can hold onto them for up to 60 days

If I had the budget and space, I would totally grab them, but alas. Perhaps
someone else out there would like these lovely shelves? If interested or if you
want some photos, please contact me.

Thanks!!
Laura

Stefanie,

We use a few music libraries, but the favorites among our producers are Omni

We don't own the rights, but we can purchases drops as needed. I know there are

Subject: [Videolib] Sound effects libraries

Hi,
I have a faculty member who is looking for sound effects libraries similar to
the BBC collection on 60 CDs but server or web based. The issue is that the CDs
are a little awkward to use and require a lot of searching. I have found that
the BBC collection is available on a hard drive. The question is are there any
libraries who purchase sound effect libraries on hard drives or web based and
then circulate/provide access to these to students? I have found many example
of media centers or digital centers at universities that make sound effects
collections available but not too many examples of libraries that are
circulating sound effects or stock video collections on a hard drive. My guess
is that there are licensing issues involved. Is anyone doing this? Does anyone
know of a sound effects or stock video/image collection that is online that is
subscription based and allows multiple user access?

Thanks,

Unless you've already checked, I'd go straight to the NBC Archive. Or ask the
Vanderbilt TV News Archive. They monitor NBC, but I don't know for sure if
Dateline is included, it may just be nightly news.

Depending on when it aired, check a monitoring company. I know from previous
employment that Video Monitoring Services retains copies for 1 year. Beyond
that, it's hit or miss.

Does anyone know where I might find an episode of Dateline about Jayson Blair,

It even appears that the full transcript of the interview is below the preview.

**Pardon cross-postings**
I'm surprised I haven't seen any postings on this yet. I am happy to share the
news that construction on the Museum of Broadcast Communications is finally
back underway! I have seen designs and layouts for planned exhibits and taken
tours of the space, and this place is going to be stellar. The location is
great and the collection really deserves the beautiful space they are building.
I highly recommend visiting once it is finally open. Their collection is
astonishing. They have Bozo's buckets!

Construction had been on hold for several years due to lack of funding. You may
have passed by the shell of a building at State and Kinzie. Please visit the
museum's website and read an article about the construction below.

And don't forget, the Radio Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is this Saturday.
Tickets are still available. Read more and learn about radio collection
digitization projects at their website (http://radiohof.org/).

Construction Resumes at the New Museum of Broadcast Communications
The new 62,000-square-foot national broadcast museum in the heart of downtown
Chicago at State and Kinzie Streets is back under construction.
The new MBC will include expanded areas for collection development, two exhibit
galleries and working radio and television studios. Over 240,000 visitors from
across the country are projected for the first year of operation.
The new MBC will also be a model of energy-efficiency, built to a Gold LEED
environmental standard-the first such Museum in Illinois. The "green" building
is designed and will be equipped to maximize energy efficiency, to minimize
waste and pollution, to reduce the consumption of resources, and to enhance
indoor environmental quality. The United States Green Building Council will
review and commission the building upon completion.
The Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation provided a leadership grant of
$1.4-million in 2005 that allowed the museum to set a high environmental
standard.

Independent Media Arts Preservation (IMAP)
Presents a Workshop on
Videotape Preservation
Friday, October 15, 2010
1 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
at Film Studies Center, University of Chicago

When videotape was introduced in 1956, the magnetic recording of a TV signal
was a technological
marvel. More than five decades (and 60 analog and digital formats) later,
videotapes have recorded
historic events, served as a means of artistic expression, and become priceless
personal documents.
Unfortunately, videotape has proven to be an unstable medium, and its recorded
images will eventually
require careful attention and well-planned action in order to survive. This
half-day workshop will serve
as an introduction to the issues and strategies necessary to tackle the
challenges of videotape
preservation. Designed to meet the needs of those with or without technical
experience in video
production, this workshop is geared to media makers and arts professionals,
archivists, conservators,
artists and other caretakers of media collections. The workshop will cover
videotape's development and
evolution, the basics of magnetic recording technology, formats, mitigation of
deterioration, risk
assessment, handling and inspection, preservation planning, best practices for
storage, reformatting, and
digitization.

Presenter: Jeff Martin is a graduate of New York University's MA program in
Moving Image
Preservation and has been working with archival moving images for more than a
decade as a
television producer, researcher, and archivist. He has taught workshops in
media preservation in
Chicago under the auspices of Midwest Media Archives Alliance and at the
International Center
for Photography, New York. He developed the content for IMAP's online
preservation resource
guide (http://www.eai.org/resourceguide/preservation). He is presently a Fellow

Randal,

I’m really interested in hearing the group’s response because my question has
always been the opposite: “How many production companies/stations have their
own library?” I’ve worked at various news stations (WFQX, WSMH, Sinclair
Broadcast Group) and production companies, and I’ve always been the first to
create and manage the video library.

Perhaps I can help answer any questions people have on introducing a studio and
production facilities!

facilities.

Could you please give me some idea of the kinds of projects you work on, what
you interaction is with campus faculty and a general idea of the mission?

We *do* have such a studio; it needs some upgrading but it is a nice facility.
But we are reviewing it's overall purpose given recent directions in media
making, and I'd like to get some comparative information from other colleagues
about their sites.

Even if some of you do not have a studio but have some opinions about the role
of libraries in producing video/electronic media -- I'd like to get your input.
Feel free to reply here if you think it is of group interest or reply to me off
list and I can summarize later.

Cheers,

Do you have any recommendations for something current in video for students of

Re: [Videolib] Appeal to producers and distributers on captioning

2010-08-12 Thread Laura Fu
All

We don't really do any educational productions, although I'm sure that if
anyone ever needed anything from our original programming, we could get it. (We
produce mainly Health and Food content) We have the capabilities to CC, but
it's not always requested. It also depends the format and production type. We
often do subtitles though, especially with all the Spanish content we're
producing. We have English with Spanish subtitles and vice versa.

I would think that production for educational and academic purposes would
automatically encode for CC. Perhaps it's just too cumbersome? I know that from
my work in local and national news, often our packages and live shots would air
without CC simply because the producer didn't want to type verbatim their pkg
that was edited in the field and sent back via the live truck. It was extra
work and too tight to make broadcast. I would always fill in the CC when I saw
blanks. It's unfortunate to know that non-news productions lack CC as well.

Best regards,
Laura

Subject: Re: [Videolib] Appeal to producers and distributers on captioning

Dear Scott,

I certainly understand your need to bring the captioning/audio description
accessibility to the attention of the producers/distributors.

BioMEDIA ASSOCIATES biology and human physiology programs were chosen for
captioning/audio description by the Department of Education Emerging
Technologies Grant that is implemented by Caption Max. Through this grant
all of our programs on DVD, for broadcast as well as our Digital Media Files
are captioned and audio described. We have learned a few things through
this grant as the technology has changed as we've gone along. Working with
Caption Max has been very easy and educational.

I'm happy to share our experience with any producer/distributor that is
new to captioning/audio description. We have always captioned our media but
the audio description as well as the creation of captioning/audio
description files for our Digital Media Files is new to us.

I'd ask buyers of media to consider that as distributors we are now
providing programs in DVD with captions that are Subtitled Enabled and audio
description, Broadcast formats with Closed Captions and audio description,
and Digital Media Files that are full play and chaptered in several encoding
formats with captioning and audio description files.

Never in the history of visual media have we provided programming in so
many formats with so many enhancements.

We also provide PDF Teaching Guide, Image Banks, and Posters plus
Interactive Learning Guides, curriculum correlations by state (K-12), and
Metadata for the full programs as well as the chaptered programs. We are
looking for a partner to create Spanish translations of our media for
inclusion in all formats.

Plus we are providing websites that have massive amounts of free content as
well as catalogs with previews, PDF Teaching Guides and Posters, and
curriculum correlations. Plus we are making IP Authentication seamless
linking our site to password protected websites of clients that license our
content that provides the client with user stats. Additionally, we continue
to send out a catalog.

Our production includes the top microscopes available to scientists and
digital cameras which now includes HD. Our animator of processes unseen
under the microscope or to enhance the illustration of a complex scientific
process must update computers and software on a regular basis as well as the
editors. Copyrights must be registered for each program. We are
continuing to produce new programs. As we update our biology collection,
those licensees receive the new program for the remaining life of the
license.

Our pricing is from 1999 with our Digital Media File licensing based upon
student enrollment so an institution with 1,500 students can afford the same
content as an institution 250,000. DVDs run $45 - 128 for single titles and
$99.95 - 400.00 for series on one disc. During this time of extreme budget
cuts we are working with each client as we believe that these students need
to have the science content we offer. After all these students will be
taking care of us!

Re-reading this it sounds like I've climbed on a soapbox but it is the
reality I face every day as a distributor that represents independent
producers. The Emerging Technologies grant has been extremely helpful to
us meet the needs of all students as captioning is a valuable learning
enhancement f

Re: [Videolib] audio transcription software

2010-08-10 Thread Laura Fu
Debbie and fellow videolibbers,

I have never used any software. My former employer, Video Monitoring Services,
had a proprietary STT (speech to text) software that was pretty top notch. But
it still isn't as good as the human mind. It couldn't always catch everything,
like foreign languages, proper nouns or slang. So I recommend hiring out. We do
our own transcribing in house. I've done my fair share.

I would check with local production companies or freelancers, who usually have
better rates. I think that using a software for that type of service will
result in errors that ultimately have to be checked by a human later anyways.

That's my two cents. Hope it helps!

Re: [Videolib] Free tapes to a better home!!

2010-06-30 Thread Laura Fu
I thought it best to respond to everyone who received this question. And thank
you for posing it!

I'm sorry I didn't provide that background information. It pains me to toss
some of these things, but it's happened before. When I heard that my former
employer of 4 years actually threw away my tape library after the operation
shut down, I was heartbroken! Thankfully a co-worker was able to salvage some
things. In this instance, I just don't have the legal rights to re-use. Almost
everything up for grabs comes from client projects. Once we've edited or
produced it, the client has final say on elements. Elements may include raw
b-roll of a long forgotten meeting, graphic reels and meltdowns or clones of
masters. Original programming is all kept, and ALL masters are saved, client
and in-house, for every project we've done.

I added a note to the page if you'd like further details. Thanks for bringing
this up JMSchwartz!

Dear All,

I applaud Laura for trying to recycle these materials, but I am perplexed:
"old and obsolete materials? new assets?" = an interesting twist when
materiality is privileged.

Surely the archival question is, "What is being destroyed when these materials
are wiped clean for re-use?" This we are not told. Imagine the "visual assets
manager" for Corbis selling glass or silver?

Laura - is it fair to ask what is the fate of the content? Before leaping to
accept your generous offer, I think archivists and others would like to know
whether historical footage is -- or should be -- preseved or whether the
materials on offer are more than "assets" in the material sense.

Laura is surely not the only one in this (uncomfortable) position and probably
there are others who are not trying as hard to recycle, BUT the larger question
in the space-strapped, short-on-staff digital age is, what is happening to the
archival record? And what is the "future" of the "past" when "space" -
physical or digital - is not allocated for archival preservation.

Thanks Laura for raising this issue and, of course, for making the materials
known and available.

Re: [Videolib] VHS cases

2010-03-11 Thread Laura Fu
Gail and fellow video librarians,

You may want to try donating them. Check local schools and artist. I was able
to donate several old films and canisters to area students and artists. Or
check other organizations to see if someone needs them. I had a tremendous
response for obsolete formats and cases from the Association of Moving Image
Archivists (AMIA).

I have been talking to Intercon Solutions (http://www.interconrecycling.com/)
just south of Chicago. We're planning a huge dump of obsolete formats in the
near future. And they said they'll take the cases too! I haven't actually done
so jet, but Jory, one of their reps, has been very diligent and helpful.

Laura

While I'm at it, I have a few hundred DVD snap cases and other items if anyone
needs something. I posted information on my grad school blog here:

**Apologies for cross-posting**
Feel free to repost or share as you see fit.

I am again trying to get rid of tapes and DVD cases. All previous inquiries
never came through. I’ve put together a really basic information page on an old
blog site I created for my graduate school class last semester. Please
disregard other content on the blog. It was a fictitious dream library I
created for my collection management class. The photos of the fake WLFU
library are of my actual library though. You will find images and information
about the tapes for sale here:

Thank you!
Used tapes for sale
Thank you for looking. My name is Laura Fu, and I am the Video Assets Manager
at AnswersMedia in Chicago. Please disregard all other content on this blog; I
created it for my graduate class last semester, and it’s the only place I know
where I can openly post this information.
As the sole member of our library, I have the task of cataloging 15+ years of
old materials. In the process, I’ve identified many items we no longer need.
I’d like to get them recycled - anything but the dumpster - but without a
budget or staff, I have no means of financing the recycling. All proceeds will
fund my recycling project, and I also aim to support other organizations by
providing low-cost tapes.
Used tapes for sale:

 *   D1 and D2
 *   Beta Cam SP
 * Used 1″ Reels and cases
 *   Some metal film canisters
 *   Digi Beta
 * VHS, DAT, Audio Cassette Tapes, DVD/Data Discs
Most non-reusable formats will be recycled. If you are interested in anything
for historic purposes or for a prop etc, you’re welcome to them. A
Non-Disclosure form must be signed to receive films. You are responsible for
shipping or pick-up in Chicago.
Serious inquiries only please. I cannot hold items unless there is payment. We
have several used film strips. I am not familiar with film formats, so I cannot
answer specific questions. These appear to be large film reels, all
used/exposed. Some have metal canisters. Some canisters are empty. You may take
whatever you’d like, but please note that you MAY NOT re-use any footage found
on any of these formats. A signed NDA is necessary, and I will provide when
applicable.
We are changing the style of our DVD cases and are therefore clearing out other
styles. They are mostly the square with rounded edges. All are plastic,
snap-shut. Other styles include round, square, and round with one flat edge.
For the DVDs, I’m asking $0.25 each OBO for the entire lot. I’ll take any
offers for the tapes/films/canisters.
Any interested party may contact me at lau...@answersmediainc.com

[Videolib] DVD cases

2010-02-10 Thread Laura Fu
Good afternoon, and my apologies for any cross posting.

We're using new cases for our DVDs, so I've got a whole bunch of varying other
DVD case styles we're trying to get rid of. Most of them are the clear,
plastic, Jewel-type snap cases with rounded edges like this:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/475889-REG/Verbatim_93975_TRIMpak_CD_DVD_Clear_Cases.html

A few are circular. Some are square.

I probably have almost 200 cases so far, and I'll probably find more as we
clear through some files. I'd appreciate any monetary donation for some or the
whole lot. All donations will go towards a large recycling project
(http://www.interconrecycling.com/) I'm trying to fund. As the sole member of
my library and without any budget, your donation will help me stay green as I
clean up our library.

My sincere thanks,
Laura

Re: [Videolib] Streaming services offered by libraries

2010-01-21 Thread Laura Fu
David,

I’m a librarian at a production company. While I work in a library, in the
general sense, it’s not traditional. Our main product is streaming video. It’s
very important to have our products available online, live, for potential
clients and sales.

Just go to www.answerstv.com<http://www.answerstv.com> and pick a channel. Our
most recent work is in Women’s Wellness under the Health channel. All of our
original programming is available in streaming video. And we are currently
designing a new platform and CMS to manage our growing digital library.

Hope this unique sidebar helps!

Laura

Subject: [Videolib] Streaming services offered by libraries

[sorry for the duplication--I sent this to Videonews by mistake and it really
should go to this list.]

I am trying to get our Systems people to move on setting up streaming services
and the movement has somewhat stalled. Could members of this group simply let
me know if your library offers streaming services? I want to compile a list of
libraries that have stream delivery. I just need the name of the library and I
can then visit your respective library sites.
