Easiest solution is to trawl eBay for an internet
router that supports connecting a modem to it.

Some companies still make them, but they aren't
cheap. :P

Four main varieties.

1 All in one with modem, router and hub or switch.

2 Two in one with modem and router and an ethernet
port.

3 Two in one with router and hub or switch and a
serial
port.

4 Just the router with a serial port for a modem and
an ethernet port to connect to your hub or switch.

Modems to connect to these must work with a PC, even
if you're connecting the box to an all Mac network.

I'd stay away from the few external modems that will
not work at all with a Mac. USR made some PC only
modems and there's a few others but I've never
actually encountered any but a couple of the USR ones
that won't work with Mac.

Swedish keyboard with US system?

2002-04-09 Thread Robert Lundqvist

Hi!

I've got this SE/30 and it would be fun to try to run older systems on it
(Systems 6.0.8, 7.0.1 and the like.). The problem is that I've only found US
versions of the systems. The language is no problem, but I do want to use my
Swedish keyboard. This particular keyboard layout is not one of the options.
Hints anyone?

The print cartridge has a wiper blade to scrape off
unused or excess toner from the OPC drum. There's
another roller that's heated and mashes the toner
onto the paper permanently. That's the fuser. The
fuser has a fuser cleaner. That's basically a bit
of heat resistant fuzz glued to a bit of plastic
and held against the fuser roller. Most of them in
older printers and copiers were soaked in a silicone
oil. Eventually the fuser cleaner gets clogged with
toner and/or the oil gets used up so you have
to replace the thing. Generally you should replace
the fuser cleaner at each toner change or refill.

It is possible to get a rebuilt print drum cartridge
or in some cases you can replace just the wiper
blade if the OPC drum and other parts are OK. It
depends on how the thing comes apart and whether or
not you need special tools to avoid damage while
taking it apart.

The fuser cleaner is most often easily user
replaceable, generally under a lid or a flip up
panel accessible after the printer or copier is
opened up. Look for a HOT warning lable. Under
there lurks the fuser. :)

this sounds to me as if the dot matrix is supposed to equal the dpi
pixel density of your screen--possibly? isn't 92dpi about median
avaerage that most people use for their screens, unless they have a
specialized reason for magnifying or reducing the density for better
reading?

i could be wrong here, but then again, wouldn't such a correspondence
place the cursor exactly in tandem to the screen layout, so that there
could be no 'slippage' with regard to where you are clicking and intend
to navigate to, exactly?

just struck me as possible by conception.

could test the theory by printing various grids to correspond with dpi
densities onscreen and see if you get visible correspondence at those
pixel grids.

only if you have the hardware with which to make the choices,
obviously. need monitors with those choices to try it out.

(possibly some further insight in my signature link below. look for the
section on differing dpi densities on different appliances.)

Easiest way for sure, just make sure you dont assign the same ip twice. :)
Let DHCP take care of any additions to your lan.
In this way you can route services to other machines and take the guess
work out of changing your uplink machine.

IPNR allows you to make configurations and bring them up as needed
for a available port. then route them through other ports. Using static ip's
and the right config for ipnetrouter should get Mark where he wont's.

A old pc with 2 nics and a flavor of linux can be handy also.

Re: Ripping Video

2002-04-09 Thread Gregg Eshelman

--- Marten van de Kraats [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Anyone around here know how to get the contents of a
 video tape on a
hard disk, preferably using some old Mac?
I know absolutely nothing about this stuff.

First off you'd need a Mac with AV or Audio Video
features that include AV _input_ and the ability
to actually capture the video and audio, not just
the ability to run it through the Mac's monitor and
speakers.

Given that, you're looking at capturing at best
320x420 resolution and using old codecs because
any video capture hardware built into NuBus Macs
either can't handle the newer ones or software
capable of using them doesn't exist to run on
them. Even the high-zoot NuBus video capture cards
that can do 640x480 at 30fps are limited to the
older codecs because of the software thing.

About the best NuBus video capture system ever was
the Media 100. That puppy took two slots, used
a custom breakout cable and the hardware was
serialized with each copy of the software keyed
to the individual board sets. So unless you get
the COMPLETE Media 100 NuBus setup it's completely
worthless. I think Media 100 had an upgrade discount
to the PCI version if you sent them the breakout
cable from your NuBus Media 100 system.

I wish Media 100 would release a version of the final
NuBus software that isn't locked to the hardware
serial
and plans for building a breakout cable. That would
not cut into their current market because 99.999% of
video professionals would sit around waiting for an
old NuBus PowerMac and old software without all the
latest and greatest FX to chew on their data. It would
definately be a big PR coup for the company. :)
(It would also make all those sets of NuBus Media 100
boards minus cables and software suddenly worth a
few dollars!)

On the cheaper end there were some other NuBus
video capture cards but I think they're mostly
restricted to working with System 7.1 through 7.5.5.
Radius made some, so did Cinepack but they dumped
the hardware end to concentrate on codec development.

Does the LEM videocard list have anything on NuBus
video capture products?

At any rate you aren't going to be using DivX or
MPEG2 or MPEG4 on any NuBus Mac. And it would be
very tedious going on anything pre G3 or even the
sub 400Mhz G3 range, though you _can_ install a
nice PCI capture card and OS 9.x.x on any PCI
Mac with a 603/604 and make things work.

If you have only one or a few tapes to convert, your
best bet is to have some shop do the capture and
either put it on DV tape or some DVD recordable that
will playback in a normal DVD-ROM or DVD player.

If you have a big box of tapes to do then it's
worth spending the money for a decently fast Mac
(or PC) with a 60+ gig drive and a DVD recorder.
(I've seen them hit the $200 mark recently!!!)
Or you can go the DivX/MPEG4 route and use plain
old CD-R. I've seen some DVD rips to DivX on CD-R
that look thisclose in quality to the original.
640x480 resolution is all you really need for
playback on a TV. Some people like to use 800x600
for PAL TV but the native resolution for DVD is
something like 720x480 for all the major TV systems.
DVD playback on a computer doesn't care if its for
NTSC, PAL, SEACAM or whatever and usually it's
possible to convert the video and shunt it to a
composite or S-Video or SCART (common in europe)
analog output to display on a TV or record on a
VCR wherever you are in the world.

On the PC side, the market of freeware utils
for ripping, encoding, converting, disabling
Macrovision etc, etc is HUGE. There's an app called
DVDx that can rip and compress a DVD faster
than realtime on an Athlon XP or Pentium 4.
It can also do other video files so it's not just
for ripping DVD movies.

I don't know what's out there for the Mac that
doesn't cost an arm and a leg. There just doesn't
appear to be much interest in non professional
video software for Macs. For a starter, pop this
search into dogpile.com
+DivX +Macintosh
And you'll find what's out there for use with the
DivX codec. Note that DivX has nothing to do with
DivX the scheme for renting encrypted DVDs that
you'd pay for then get to watch as much as you wanted
for 24 or 48 hours, then you'd have to pay again or
upgrade the Disc to gold which allowed unlimited
playing. (That is, unlimited until the DivX scam when
belly up and they'll be shutting down their server
soon if not already, which will turn all DivX discs
into instant coasters.)

So if you want to be _cheap_ AND up to date with
video, get a PC box. If you want to do this with
a Mac, contact someone who specializes in video
capture, encoding etc with Macs. :) If you decide
to go PC on this project, start with www.divx.com
and get their DivX 5.0 codec.

Re: auto painting macs-- is he that good?

2002-04-09 Thread flawed jai

the pickle asked if my friend up the street does work on a par with the
mac hack
mercury classic II on applefritter.

(here's the demo page, so you can all go look at the work, for
reference:)

http://www.applefritter.com/hacks/mercury/index.html

the answer is, yes, chris, he's *that* good.
he has an auto body shop of his own.
he brings mercedes' and lexus' [mercedii and lexii?} over to our back
yard and sets up his compressor and his mask and paint and brings these
poor gouged, wounded creatures back to their sleek, beverly hills fine
shine with spray and hand rubbing until they look like they just came
off the showroom floor again.

i've watched him work and asked him one day if he could repaint my bike
frame, and he said sure, any color i wanted..then the bike disappeared.
but on a further day, he said he could pretty much paint anything i
wanted. i was out there with a can of spray paint one night, retouching
a rusted and flaking case of a computer my kid found, and he came
walking thru on some other errand and saw me, and paused to remind me he
could do that for me on the compressor, if i didn;t want to keep having
to buy cans of spray paint.

so the reminder comes back around, every so often, and I'm incubating
ideas for him.

my buddy fell into the dream with me, earlier today, and got himself all
excited with ideas of custom painting old macs and pc cases as a
novelty he could do down on the beach boardwalk. now he's off ruminating
on acrylics and textures, and patterns and where to get raw materials
and how to get the word out so people will come look. he viewed the
skinz site with me, and was irritated with what he felt was the
tameness and predictability of it. he's thinking much more passionate,
dark, intense expressions.

so maybe we've hit on a new pastime. arting up old macs. why the hell
not? if they're out of warrantee and saved from the trash, who's to say
we can't?

this is venice! this is expected, here.
and macs are for the right brained, creative types, no?

*that* network question

2002-04-09 Thread Mark Benson

OK, nobody seems to get my drift so I obviously explained it about as
well Donald Rumsfeld ;).

Heres what I have at the moment:

4 machines all using TCP/IP, 3 using OT, 1 using OS X.
All machines have static IPs assigned using the DHCP module in IPNR
All machines have a DNS name assigned through Mac DNS
All Machines are also setup to share via AppleTalk
All Machines talk fine over both AppleTalk and TCP/IP.

The only modem is attached (built-into) my iBook
I dial up to my ISP through this modem.

DNS DHCP are administered from my LCIII, which runs MacDNS and IPNR
*already*. This machine runs 24/7 and never is disconnected but will
probably be replaced by my IIci when I get it as the IIci has the option
of 2 NICs.

When I am at University I use my friends Linux server, which routes from
a Windows XP machine connected to ADSL (which Is how I know it can be
done), to do the above instead as it's already set up, I only set up
DNS, DHCP and stuff on my network at home to fill the gap while I'm not
at Uni, but I graduate in June so I will need it permanently after that.

I could buy a modem for my LCIII (a serial 56k that works shouldn't be
*that* hard to find right?) or the IIci I am buying (same thing really).
On the other hand I could work out how to do the following:

Using IPNSX I can broadcast the Internet connection over the network
with the following conditions:

DNS and Router for all TCP/IP clients have to be set to the iBook.
IPNSX has to be running on my iBook to run the services, I can run them
by hand but it's gotta be the world's largest mess about.

The way I see it I need to attach the iBook to a separate sub-net to
rout the internet connection to the rest of the network which means I
can't do it until I get my IIci and a couple if NuBus network cards (I
could do it on my Quadra if I bought one but I don't want to tie it down
and IIci machines make great servers). Is all this correct or can I do
it all on 1 hub and one NIC?

I'm wandering while staying strangely on-topic (what with the IIci and
all). I know it all seems like so much effort for on 56k network
connection on a bunch on Macs I'm not going to use it on but it's all
relative, if I get employed as an IT tech I'm gonna have to know all
this.

want DNS on the internal network, why are you trying to tell me I don't?

You can do 640x480 as well. The frame rate starts to drop off though. I
think it's 4-6fps for that size. 320x240 is fine, you can't really get
any more quality out of a VCR video if you make it any larger. The only
thing that would make it a problem was if you wanted to watch the video

Re: Internet jiggery pokery

2002-04-09 Thread Mark Benson

I've used DHCP to dynamically assign IPs on a LAN,
but I much prefer using all static IPs then going
through a router, either a dedicated router box or
a computer running internet routing software to
bring the internet to the LAN. That way I know
who's whom on the LAN and it's easy to troubleshoot
 with pings and route traces.

I use DHCP for convenience more than anything. I use DNS to identify the
machines clearly, I hat having to remember which machine has which IP.
I can't afford a router. I have several Macs so I'll use those instead,
they are substantially cheaper and I have the stuff I need already for
the most part :).

Using Win2K or XP Pro it's easy to turn on or off
internet sharing on any TCP/IP connection. I don't
think you even have to reboot. How does internet
sharing (took Apple long enough) do in OSX?

It's not yet in OS X. I am using a free beta software from Sustworks. It
does the job, crashes on occasions but is, as a result, just as good as
Windows XP ;). I think it is expected from Apple in 10.2, it's not like
it's hard if you wrote the OS.

Mark,

OK, let me see if I understand this correctly:
1- You have a bunch of LocalTalk-only Macs
2- You use IPNetRouter 68k to route IP to said LocalTalk Macs
3a- In certain situations, you use a Windows box to route from LocalTalk
to Internet (via IPNR)
3b- In other situations, you use an iBook running IPNetShareX to route
from LocalTalk to Internet (via IPNR)

Perhaps we should start with a question: What is your end goal? I would
guess that it is allowing your LocalTalk machines Internet access no
matter how they are connected -- i.e. via Windows or via OS X.

Since you have all of your machines already configured to access
Internet through IPNR, there's no need to reconfigure ALL OF THOSE.
Simply tell IPNR that its default route is your OS X box instead of the
Windows NT box.

Also, there's no need to reconfigure your machines to use your iBook as
DNS. Either run a caching DNS server on any one of them (and don't
change which one) or tell them to use ANY DNS server on Internet. ANY
one. It doesn't matter which. Just remember: the farther away the DNS
server is from your machines, the longer it will take to resolve names.
But... ANY one will work. Unless your ISP blocks outbound DNS queries,
but that's *highly* unlikely.

I think what you have is a very workable situation, but that you're
likely complicating it. As I said a moment ago, we should probably
start by answering the question What is your end goal?

Eagle

Indeed.

IPNR allows you to make configurations and bring them up as needed

I should think so. I take it by the below comment I *am* looking at a 2

Putting me next to a PC these days makes me flinch unless I'm being

Well, whatever. Substitute Ethernet where I wrote LocalTalk. Now
is it correct?

3a- In certain situations, you use a Windows box to route from

When did I ever mention Windows. Nooo, that's something entirely
different. Sorry, I'm on Rumsfled mode again...

at Uni, but I graduate in June so I will need it permanently after that.
That's where the Windows box comes from. OK so it goes through a Linux
box first. So... are you going from Ethernet (Was LocalTalk) THROUGH
IPNR THROUGH Linux THROUGH XP? Or just From Ethernet (was LocalTalk)
through XP?

Either way will require SOME amount of reconfiguration.

3b- In other situations, you use an iBook running IPNetShareX to route

No, you got the wrong end of the stick entirely, sorry. Should I give up
 now?

One problem is only that we do not yet understand what you want to do.

A further problem is that you want to have your machines in different
places and yet not have to reconfigure them. You will have to
reconfigure, at minimum, the DHCP server, which should provlde to the
clients an IP address, a subnet mask, a router address, and DNS
information (including DNS server and domain name). If any of those
pieces are hard-coded on the clients, then there is nothing you can do
except reconfigure the clients to use ONLY DHCP.

As I said earlier: what is your end goal? It seems that you want the
unlikely (not quite impossible): having a setup such that your
machines can be Here or There or Wherever... without reconfiguration.
Is that right?

But, again, when you're NOT connected to Internet, DNS doesn't matter!

Yes it damn well does (sorry). I have it set up internally, I don't

Again: what are you using IP addresses for? Are you running a web or
email server on one of your machines? If you are not running any IP

Your solely-Mac network can communicate sans IP addresses, so there must
be some other reason that makes you think you need those IP addresses.
What is that reason?

there was no GUI front-end configuration tool included with OS X. The

The cool thing about NAT in OS X is that it can be done over a SINGLE

BOTH be on a single ethernet port. Very cool.

Sounds a bit high tec to me... For my home network which can contain a dozen or so
IP-aware devices, I normally make a note of the static IP address in the paper
notebook that is reserved for recording crucial information. In addition, I stick a
piece of masking tape on the device and write the address there too. That way, even if
a device is off, non-functioning or in storage, it's trivial to check the address.

I couldn't agree more strongly with the advice to use static rather than dynamic
addresses on a small network. Static addresses make troubleshooting a lot more
straightforward. Be especially careful if you are plugging more than one dedicated
router or firewall box or server operating system (eg Win 2000 Server, Linux) onto
your network. Running more than one DHCP or NAT server is a great recipe for confusion.

Sorry. I didn't quite catch your drift... I have an HTTP server on the

DHCP and indeed TCP/IP at all. I also find that going from a 86k machine

Let DHCP take care of any additions to your lan.

This is why I use it, it's much less stress.

So your base 4 machines all have static addresses assigned by you on
your intranet.
The ibook on dialup would have a second subnet (not the right word?)
that gets its
dynamic address assigned by your isp.
Since you run IPNR you can route the traffic from internet to your
intranet.
As you assigned your ip addresses on all your machines manually, the DHCP
module works fine with your intranet and you can plug other machines in
and be given
a dhcp address (dynamic) by IPNR.
As you know the static addresses of your base machines, configuring them to
run services, whether the ibook or the LCIII is the uplink, serving
should be easy.

If you said yes to these then I dont understand your actual problem. sorry.

I should think so. I take it by the below comment I *am* looking at a 2
sub-net system then

Yes you are running 2 subnets(?). Do it properly and IPNR on the LCIII
should be able to
serve over the modem/printer port to a nic-less classic while the the
ibook is doing the dialup.
You could run another classic server along side the LCIII. :-)
If the ibook had the ports to localtalk the classic you could do it that
way using a three sub-net
config. Good thing the classics only browsing text or you would not be
happy with the
speed on dialup.

A old pc with 2 nics and a flavor of linux can be handy also.

Sorry, haven't been on dialup for sooo long I forgot. ;) You should know
what I meant.
Besides, a mac is more flexible since you can tcp over localtalk for
older macs. .

Thanks, Mart. It actually reduced the greyness of the page, but didn't get

FWIW, the fuser tested okay with an ohm meter when it cooled down. I still
suspect the spongy black roller below the fuser assembly because is keeps
getting filled with toner dust. Someone pointed out (JEff G.?, Greg E.?)
that they might need replacing.

I got this at a bargain and just can't afford to pour anymore into it unless
I get another one to play with. Thank you all for your help.

2002-04-09 Thread charlie morrow

hey everyone, i was hoping someone could help me out here,
i think these are pretty general questions for those already in the field,
but im just started and im completely confused.

my father just found a MacIIcx at his office for me,
i basically grew up on a MacSE, a lot of whats left of my childhood memory
is comprised of Crystal Quest, Cosmic Osmo, and Shufflepuck Cafe. also
doodling
on MacPaint..

so of course im scrambling to assemble mostly games for my new old Mac.
ive already got a collection sitting on this Win98 PC, games and System
7.5.1 (what my Mac is using) -7.5.3 upgrade and 7.5.3-7.5.5 upgrade.

soo i just really dont know how to get started here. PC Exchange works
perfectly, but the stuff i have on my PC is in various formats- hqx,
sea.bin, bsq, sea.hqx, sit.hqx, shk, sit... on my Mac is Disk Copy 4.2, and
StuffIt Lite 3.5.

soo.. yeah. like i said im a mess, i dont even know what i need to ask, so
if anyones been through this kinda operation, any helpful hints you could
give me would be much much appreciated. i just want to relive my childhood
on this thing. thanks a lot.

Re: Ripping Video

2002-04-09 Thread kapnkid

The heatsink is to transfer the heat from the CPU to the air, and the fan
moves the air away and replaces it with cooler air. The heat transfer is
limited by the 'narrowest' part of the system. If the heat can't get out of
the chip it would soon look like a dim light bulb. If the air can't get out
of the case it will soon be like a small oven, and things will fail. Heat is
the enemy. Some of the Windoze machines have fans mounted on the chip
heatsink itself, as well as a fan to cool the box! Some even have Peltier
devices mounted on the chip, a very inefficient method, but it works. Keep
those fuzz bunnies clear of the fan opening ;-) Is it warm in here or is it
just me?

My 840av has a 40MHz 040 in it. It has a short stumpy heat-sink (it
needs to be to fit under the drive bay moulding) and it whacks out a
fair bit of heat. Having said that I got a nasty burn from the edge of
my LC040 in my 475 when I out it in but realised (as the machine sounded
unusually quiet) I forgot to re-attach the fan.

1. I understand you use a LCIII as a server, but you want to replace it
with a IIci because, you want to run 7.1. Why don't you install 7.1 on
your LCIII? It only needs a tiny enabler to run that.
BTW 7.1 won't make your server any faster. If you wanna have a faster
server, you can do two things: use a faster Mac (like a 68040 or higher)
in order to overcome the lousy I/O of system 7 or use that Mac IIci and
install system 6 and AS 2... Assembly coded I/O really pays of for a
server. I once used a IIci with system 6 as a file server. You won't
believe how fast it was. To bad it was rather noisy. Now I use a LC with
a disabled fan and a hard disk that falls a sleep as soon as it is
finished. It is not very fast, but I don't care about that. If I want a
fast connection I access the public folder of my iMac directly.

In general: I totally disagree with you on 7.1 being a bit limp for a
desktop OS because it has less crap. I consider that to be one of the
advantages of 7.1. Not that I use any kind of system 7 on my client
machines. I hate system 7 as a client OS. It is far to unstable. On
the 3 clients in use at home I run : 6.05, 8.1 and X.

I know it does. A 25 Mhz 68030 already runs quite hot.

Why don't you download the swedish version of system 6 from a well known
system 6 website? You ought to able to use that keyboard then.

your LCIII? It only needs a tiny enabler to run that.

I know that, it actually has a 475 board in it (and thus an 040) so it's
OK but it is too restricting because it only has room for one NIC. I
really want a dual NIC machine, the reason I'm using a IIci instead when
I get it, to do multi sub-net IIci so it will be very fast in 7.1 :). I
ran 7.1 on my LCIII(475) for about 2 days and decided I might as well
install 7.6.1.

BTW 7.1 won't make your server any faster.

Yes it will, it frees up lots of RAM by getting rid of stupid
unnecessary extensions I have found I can't turn off for one reason or
another in 7.6.1. It also uses less RAM itself and has less CPU overhead
when running idle.

If you wanna have a faster
server, you can do two things: use a faster Mac (like a 68040 or higher)
in order to overcome the lousy I/O of system 7 or use that Mac IIci and
install system 6 and AS 2...

I need 7.1 or later and OT 1.1.2 to run IPNR - sorry Marten ;).

In general: I totally disagree with you on 7.1 being a bit limp for a
desktop OS because it has less crap. I consider that to be one of the
 advantages of 7.1.

It is for servers but I like a full featured package for a
client/desktop OS, not one I have to botch and scrape to get stuff
working in, I only do that for 030 powered machines :).

Not that I use any kind of system 7 on my client
machines. I hate system 7 as a client OS.

So you aren't biased by that at all then ;).

 It is far to unstable.

My server runs 7.6.1 and goes and goes and goes nad.. you get the idea.
It ran for a week straight before I took it out to bring it back here
for easter and since I set up the DHCP services it has run for a further
8 days and I reset it tonight to reconfigure something (thought I'd take
the chance to reboot it and clear it's throat - I always do it when
I'm doing a major change on a server)/

On the 3 clients in use at home I run : 6.05, 8.1 and X.

I have 3 System 7 machines (LC - 7.0.1 from it's original install disks,
SE/30 - 7.1, LCIII(475) - 7.6.1 and solid as a rock) an iBook running OS
X and an 840av running 8.1 (it has a 40 GB hard disk in at the mo so
needs HFS+ :) ). I'm happy with all except the LC but it stays as it is
because it's in 100% original state.

System 6 makes a whole lot of difference. You won't believe how much

Yep, but in the text you were constantly talking about a server. The

router.

Re: my internet problem

2002-04-09 Thread Mark Benson

On Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at 01:55 AM, Marten van de Kraats wrote:

Yes but in that case System 6 won't do much for it either because it
ultimately depends on the hardware, a you rightly say. A 68k Mac
struggles to saturate 10baseT anyway (unless it's a late Quadra, that
can saturate it just) neither my SE/30 or my LCIII(475) come close.

System 6 makes a whole lot of difference. You won't believe how much
better it is than system 7 at I/O stuff. It is a totally superior
server OS. I can't help it. It is just the truth. System 7 is very
 inefficient.

Yes, you could say that. All that stupid new-fangled PPC code I guess.
Still, I need 7.1 or later so it's a bit academic. I'm afraid I'm stuck
with crappy 7.1 ;).

Erm, he whole internet thing in the title was a minor give away wasn't
 it ;).

Yep, but in the text you were constantly talking about a server. The
machine you are using isn't a server. It is a Mac running a software
 router.

If I'm not mistaken a server is defined a computer that provides one or
more services to a network. Routing being a service I think it
qualifies. Besides it is also serving DHCP, DNS and HTTP to my internal
network so it is a server not just a router.

No it wasn't solid. Maybe compared to 7.5.

You mist do nasty things to it - it crashed one and it was a bad
extension. I admit I only ran Word 5.1 and FMPro 3 on it most of the
time but it was solid for me.

M... I take it you are not the one paying the electricity bill in
your household. Otherwise you might think a bit different about it...

Naah, I live with my folks :). I pay it at University but we have gas
heating and so it is relatively cheap even with 15 computers going at
once (including 2 servers). I won't need my IIci's services at Uni
though so it won't be on all the time.

It doesn't even come close to Mac OS 8.1. And if you like, I can also
give you a not so modern comparison... I happen to know this OS that
is much stabler still than 9.1, but I guess you already know which
 system I'm talking about.

Sys 6 is all well and good if you have a 1990 or earlier machine. It
won't run on most machines made after 1991 though so that rules out all
but 2 of my machines. The LC would run it but it's my shiny 'as is'
original 1991 LC with Claris Works 1.0 and a stonking 512MB VRAM and 4MB
RAM.

M... I take it you are not the one paying the electricity bill in

Mark, he has a point here. The IIci sucks electricity like nobody's business.

What I still don't get is where the heck the need for IP addressing on an
internal, not-connected-to-the-Internet, LAN is coming from. If you need
to do file sharing in the absence of the iBook, you can - just not over
TCP/IP. But file sharing over TCP/IP is outrageously slow (especially
compared to just AppleTalk over Ethernet) anyway, so there's *no advantage*
to it.

Any other use that's been mentioned so far in this thread would require an
Internet connection, thus necessitating the placement of the iBook *back*
into the network.

So where the heck is the problem?

Well I solved that - IPNR talks MacIP :). I found a bit in the docs for
IPNR (which I have read but to no avail) on sharing to LocalTalk
Machines, pretty cool :).

Remember I suggested that you read Amber's site about networking?
That's why - she covered this in her pages. :)

http://archaic-apples.shauny.de/index.php?category=Macintoshsubcategory=Intl+S
ystem+SW

About 2/3 the way down the page, has pictures and all.
Far better description than the gibberish I type.
IPNR's tools for doing this did not work for me but
I was looking at the network the wrong way.
Configuring it by hand helped me work it out. Doh.
Only being able to route appletalk over one port at a time
is a limitation stopping you from using the modem/printer ports
at the same time One MacIP config in IPNR covers both ports
and you choose which through the appletalk CP I. forgot sorry
You dont need MacIP when using IPNR over Ethernet so
you can point appletalk else where.

You shouldn't be running VM if at all possible anyway. Yet another reason

Yep. Just get an Ethernet card for the IIci and hook it up to the router.
Install Open Transport 1.1.2 (linked in the FAQ) and set up the TCP/IP

Why are Asante network cards so cheep. Is it one to stay away from?

The only difficulty I have encountered is that some models are unable
to auto-negotiate with auto-switching 10BT/100BT hubs or interfaces.
For instance, I have three Asante MC3NB interfaces in my IIci and
they are all unable to communicate with the auto-switching 10BT/100BT
interface in my iMac. This has been confirmed by Asante.

You should have no problem in your router is strictly 10BT.

I have 3 System 7 machines (LC - 7.0.1 from it's original install disks,
SE/30 - 7.1, LCIII(475) - 7.6.1 and solid as a rock)...

Is that 7.6.1 with or without PPC code? I have a PPC-stripped version of
7.6.1 running in an LC575 and like its behavior so far.

You have any *idea* how much a good quality A-D

Checked macwarehouse.com ? TigerDirect.com has some
too but for some reason only their printed catalog
tells which works for Win and Mac. I think Dazzle
has one with a firewire passthrough plus all the
analog video hookups for doing DA/AD conversions and
it ain't near $250.

Re: Swedish keyboard with US system?

2002-04-09 Thread Robert Lundqvist

Thanks for the suggestions, and yes, I've found these old system at the
suggested website. However, the files I receive after download are not
possible to open. They are listed as *.hqx files on the website, but nothing
happens when StuffIt is started. I get no disk images as I suppose they
should become in the end. Have I missed anything here?
