Re: A morse Keyer to write sms and e-mail.
I'd like to hear more, but unless you're a radio Ham buff, not sure of it's benefit. And to think folk complained about all that tapping in the Type 'n Braille app. But I got used to that, I knew Braille, I don't know morse. I remember numeric digits took 5 taps each, so you could be working away at it for some time. Re: iPod Touch 5TH Generation battery issue
I know it is meant to auto-shutdown when power is low; but yes, I've had an old iPhone go as low as 7%, I put it on charge then, never left one long enough to see how low it would go. But it needs to retain some charge to hold settings, though it doesn't need a lot, it has to make a decision at some point. Be interested to see how this pans out. Strange Problem Downloading iTunes
Well, maybe the subject should read Strange Problem Trying to Download iTunes. Here's the vitals on my system: - Windows Vista - JAWS 10.??? - 465 GB System Disk, 358 GB free - Internet Explorer 8 - URL www.apple.com/iTunes - Selecting the Windows download. - Cable modem I'm not sure what else I should add so folks will know the platform I'm working with, so feel free to ask. Here's the problem; when I select the download link my PC loses all sound. I truly can't say if anything else bad is happening because I am totally blind, but I sure don't get much response via the keyboard. Questions: - Has anybody else encountered this problem? - Is this a known problem (community wide I mean)? - Does anybody have a solution? - Is there an alternative to getting iTunes installed on a PC? I've installed blind tunes, hoping that would make things easier, and I've read through all the guides multiple times. Frankly, the guides for blind tunes suck, and assume a level of understanding of the way it works that the new user simply does not possess. I've imported several folders of music into iTunes, and somehow was able to sync the music to my iPhone, but I'm frankly not sure how I did it, it only copied the music over after over an hour of trial and error, and I cannot replicate what I did. It seems it would be an easy thing to select an album, or create a playlist and copy it over, especially with scripts built specifically for this, but I must be missing the boat entirely somewhere. RE: accessible barcode scanner for iphone4s
Hi, Well, you don't really have to see to use this app. I am totally blind and tried it out last night. The trick is learning approximately where the bar codes are located which takes some patience and perhaps some sighted help at first. If it is a can, the bar code is usually close to the seam of the label. If it is a bag with a seam, it is also usually near the seam. Boxes are often on the bottom, or close to the bottom. You just have to be patient and hold the camera about 4 to 8 inches from the object and stay focused on one area for a while, probably 30 seconds then move slightly to focus on another area. Once you get a few correct, you will have a better idea where to find them and you'll get faster at it. RE: Notes question
If you don't mind sticking with txt files, PlainText is free and very good. It allows for creating folders and I don't know that you will run into a problem with length, though I haven't written anything that terribly long. NoteMaster is another very good text editor. I believe it runs about $4.00, but there is a light version you can try to see if you like it. They both sync with DropBox. Ralph, with Read2Go you can choose between Ryan or Heather. I suspect you will prefer them to Victor's BookShare voice. Books download very rapidly with this app and you can also read periodicals. I have come to think of Victor as my device for BARD books and storing recipes and my iPhone as the source for BookShare books and the newspaper. Re: Selecting, copying etc
In an edit field use rotor to go to edit and select all. Or, if you want just a portion of the text, you increase or decrease your selection by pinching with to fingers on screen in or out. It is a gesture I found a bit tricky. Vest to practice in VoiceOver practice mode. The increment of your selection depends on your rotor setting. In other words, if you have it set to words, touching screen with 2fingers and increasing the distance between them will select the word to the right of cursor. If the rotor was set to lines, the same gesture would select one line. Hope this gives ooh a starting point. After selecting, change rotor to edit and choose copy or cut. Good luck with this. Re: Notes question
yeah, I always think it's funny how people consider control+x and control+v to be intuitive, but control+w and control+y to be unintuitive, especially since many of those Unix editors were around long before you had any editors in DOS or Windows. Don't confuse familiarity with intuitiveness! :-) I personally always hate going back to a DOS/Windows style editor after doing a lot of cutting and pasting in Emacs! Re: iPod Touch 5TH Generation battery issue
Lithium ion batteries also can't reach a zero charge without causing permanent damage to the battery, so the electronics built into them will shut them down before they reach an absolute zero charge. I'd assume the meter would take this into account though. Have you tried recalibrating the battery? I haven't done this on my iPhone, but I did it recently on my netbook, which was automatically shutting down when the battery indicator was still saying I had about 30% charge left. After recalibrating, it's acting normally, although I haven't actually seen how far I can take the battery charge down before it shuts off, it is letting me know I have significant less charge in this old battery now than it did before I recalibrate. To recalibrate, just let the battery go down as far as it can and then plug it in and let it charge all the way up. I've seen people say you nay need to do this 2 or 3 times, but I've never done it more than once myself. On 26/10/12 02:53, Rob Harris wrote: I know it is meant to auto-shutdown when power is low; but yes, I've had an old iPhone go as low as 7%, I put it on charge then, never left one long enough to see how low it would go. In other words, if you have it set to words, touching screen with 2fingers and increasing the distance between them will select the word to the right of cursor. Looking for belt clip solution for iPhone.
Hello, I have the otterbox commuter and I like it well enough. However, since it adds a bit of bulk and for general security reasons I dog don't like to put it in my pocket when I walk around the house. Does anyone know of a good, secure belt clip case that would fit the iPhone 5with it's case in it? Hope the question makes sense. Re: iPod Touch 5TH Generation battery issue
I realize your message was very wellintended, but I think you missed a step. As far as it will run down is 12 percent. twice now, I havelet it run to the point where it shuts itself off, which it thinks is as far as it can run down; twice I have brought it back to a full charge. If the battery was going to recalibrate, I think it would have done so. Hence, I think there is a hardware problem and I am going to take steps to get a replacement as soon as I can. Re: A problem with Siri
Hello to all who responded to my Siri problem. It is now corrected. Even though I did a complete restore of my iPhone using Recovery Mode, the problem still existed. So, I took things a little further. 1. I reinstalled the OS from scratch and ran the phone as a new phone. The problem went away. 2. I then restored the phone and ran the backup from icloud. The problem came back. So, I removed everything from my iCloud account and I do mean everything. 3. I then restored the phone as a new phone, manually put all the info back in place and the problem is now gone. When I discussed this with Apple support, they didn't say any thing about 3 digit numbers. So, in conclusion, I can now call numbers just fine but not those 3 digit numbers. Thanks guys for pointing this out, I sure appreciate it. Oh yes, one other thing, I also disabled Siri for a few hours and then re activated it. I am now also getting much better response while dictating or looking up stuff. So, that's the end of this little story. Hope this helps someone else if they are having similar problems. Re: accessible barcode scanner for iphone4s
David, Just use the /m3 switch Lol. Seriously, that is one of the drawbacks of using the iPhone as opposed to the IdMate. What you need to do is learn where the barcodes are likely located. The best app on the iPhone is probably DigitEyes. Bar codes are usually on the bottom or lower side of a box, and near the seam on a can. Hold the phone about six inches away. Re: Notes question
This is more or less my thing too. If I open a lengthy file, I want to get to my place quickly and easily, edit or modify quickly and easily, insert and import, or even export text to and from it; sort of normal editing features we've been able to do for years, until we got the pocket device. Anybody doing this like I describe? Using the cmd-arrow keys for block marking would have mileage, so would unix and wordstar concepts like block start and block end using ctrl-B and K respectively. The Wordstar one did try to be intuiative about it. RE: Selecting, copying etc
Ramy, It may help if you explain in a bit more detail what exactly you want to do. I think people are assuming you want to select text in this file, then copy and it and paste it somewhere else. From what you wrote it sounds to me somebody sent you this Text file and you want to copy the entire file and move it somewhere else. I am, however, not sure where you want to move it since the iPhone doesn't really have an accessible file system like Windows where you could take an attachment you got in a message, email, Skype etc. and save it in some folder somewhere. If you want the content of this Text file somewhere on your iPhone where you can get to it, it would probably be best if you open the file, then see if there is an Edit option in the rotor and tap on Select All, then Copy. This will copy the entire text to the clipboard and you could now go into the Notes app or any other editor you may have like List Recorder, Nebulus Notes, Elements etc. Here select Paste from the Edit Rotor and all your text should be pasted in and you can now save it, if you use something like Elements and you also use Dropbox the file will be available to you on the computer as well via Dropbox. problem quitting applications with home button
Dear Listers, I seem to have a problem trying to quit certain applications by pressing the home button. Similarly, I can't seem to be able at times to call up app switcher by pressing the home button twice quickly. I am talking here about the iPad 2. The trouble is that this behaviour is erratic. Sometimes the home button works immediately, other times I have to press it several times. Sometimes I can't quit an application and I can only do so by performing the five finger pinch that takes me to the screens with my applications listed. Has anyone else had this experience? vo talking during phone calls
Hello, I had the experience yesterday of making a couple of calls some with the wired headset and some without. In both cases, VO started talking in the middle ofthe call. It would say screen dimmed and phone locked, and on one of hte calls I made with the headset, it kept reading the time every few seconds. Obviously this makes it very hard to hear the person on the other end of the call. Any tips on how to get VO to stop talking while I am on a call would be appreciated. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: question about the lg hbs730 bluetooth headset.
A slightly side question. When you use a blutooth earphones, do you have to pair them every time you want to use them? What happens if you don't want to use the earphones but listen to the internal speaker? How does the speaker know that you don't want to use the earphones? Is it just by turning the earphones off? Can one turn them off? I know it all sounds rather simple but I've never had a pair of bluetooth earphones, and I'm researching them with a view to getting a pair. Thanks for any tips. Re: problem quitting applications with home button
Andrew, I've noticed this on my iPad 3Gen since upgrading to iOS 6. I was thinking it was a problem with my home button! But maybe it's a VO bug. I usually go to settings and turn off back on VO (I have some usable vision). I was also thinking it may be a comflict of something, as since iOS 6 came out I have VO on and Zoom on as well. Prior to iOS 6 we couldn't do that. I don't have Zoom on my iPhone as the level of magnification I need is too big to be effective on the smaller screen, in fact I consider myself a VO user as my primary choice of using either of my iDevices. So, I'd be interested to see if anyone else has experienced this. Also, I'll have to check out the five finger pinch out I don't use any of the iPad custom gestures as of yet. Re: problem quitting applications with home button
Katey, THe home button ineffectiveness I have noticed more since upgrading to i.os. I'm glad I'm not the only one since I was beginning to worry that I had a faulty iPad 2 and would have to take it for repairs which is usually costly. Have you by any chance reported it to Apple? Also, do you know that you can reset Voiceover by pressing the lock button 5 times quickly? That might save you going into settings. The 5 finger pinch has to be enabled in settings/accessibility/voiceover. There is also a 4 finger swipe there which you may find useful on the iPad. Best wishes Andrew On 26 Oct 2012, at 18:51, Katey Glass katey...@gmail.com wrote: Andrew, I've noticed this on my iPad 3Gen since upgrading to iOS 6. Sometimes the home button works immediately, other times I have to press it several times. Sometimes I can't quit an application and I can only do so by performing the five finger pinch that takes me to the screens with my applications listed. Has anyone else had this experience? Re: question about the lg hbs730 bluetooth headset.
Generally, you never have to re-pair headphones, unless you pair them with another device. So, if you do not want to use the headphones, turn them off. Since the microphone seems to be the shortcoming of most Bluetooth devices, I will often turn off the headphones if I want to use Siri or dictate. Eric P. S. In an earlier post describing the Plantronics 903 Bluetooth headphones, when I read the post I had already sent, I noticed some glaring errors. Be assured I was not talking about the headphones and one's butt. It was a case of dictation and not clearly hearing what was said when I proof read the post. I would highly recommend that your friend get a Google voice number. Then you can use multiple apps to send and receive text messages from the iPod touch. Never tried Gv conect, I've been using talkatone for a while. Get with me when you have time, and let me know what the quality of calls and such are with gv connect and if it's worth the price. I'm trying out the premium account for talkatone butg I'm always keeping an eye out for something that works good on both the iPad and iPod. This seems to be getting a lot of attention of late, and I'm actually using it more and more as my cell, it serves a lot of different purposes so it's nice. If you tap on that edit field and fill it out there is a new one appearing below it ready for you to enter an other email. Hope this makes sense. Note that this is the way it works for me in icloud contacts. In other words, if you have it set to words, touching screen with 2fingers and increasing the distance between them will select the word to the right of cursor. Re: Twitter Notifications
It may be necissary to take a look at settings in the twitter app. I noticed after updating that there were slight changes to the way notifications were handled. An example of this is mentions. You now have the option for no notification, only if the mention is from people you follow, or from anyone. RE: problem quitting applications with home button
Hi Andrew, When I had my iPhone 4 the Home Button worked very poorly and sporatically. This didn't happen right away, it was after about 8 months or so. I literally could not get anything done with it at times and eventually just took the phone to an Apple Store. Of course when I tried to demonstrate it it worked fine, but they took my word for it and gave me a new phone. There is a fairly simple procedure which is supposed to fix the Home Key in some cases, but I can't remember the steps and don't have time to look it up right now. You can google Fixing Home Button on iPhone or something like that and I know it's been discussed on here maybe a year or so ago, so the archives might produce something. RE: making calls
Hi Donald, What Jenny said is sort of what should happen except that the keypad could be hidden in which case you have to locate the Keypad button, double tap it and the keypad will appear. Now, if you are running iOS 6 some people have a problem where Voiceover volume is very low and hard to hear over the call volume. However, I assume that for a conference call you probably use a headset since it's more comfortable anyways and if you are not I highly recommend you do so since entering the numbers is much easier than if you try to do it in speakerphone mode. HI, I use plaintext for long documents. On iphone 4 it was getting slow after it became longer. Have not tried on the 5. I have not found a good way to find a specific spot in a file other than arrowing with the keyboard. Hi Graham, I'd connect your iPhone and iPad with the cable and then make sure that the syc via WiFi option is indeed checked and didn't somehow get unchecked. Before you can use WiFi sync you have to make sure it's checked and if it is not, check it and then click Apply. Also, make sure your devices are definitely connected to WiFi and to the same network as the computer. Sorry if you may think these are obvious things and if you checked, but I don't know the level of your knowledge and even for an advanced user sometimes you assume something and later find out it's not the case. Lastly, if WiFi sync still doesn't work, reset your computer as well as reboot your iDevices and possibly even the router/WiFi access point. I personally use WiFi sync sometimes, but I find it unreliable at times as well and it's also a lot slower so if I have larger amounts of data to sync I just plug in the cable. IF a baby uses the iphone it is useful for ex to lock the home button or specific parts of the screen so it stays in the app you intended. Re: Guided Access
Hi Sandy, Guided Access can be used in situations where you are letting someone use your device, but you want them to use only one program. For instance, you could keep a small child from accidentally leaving the app and opening other ones. Or you could prevent a student taking a test from switching to other apps to get answers. Or it might help a student with poor coordination who needs to use a particular app stay in the app. You can block controls within the app as well, but I would imagine this has to be done visually, because as I understand it, you draw a line on the screen around the controls you want to block. Re: Notes question
Try clearing out your app switcher and then turning your iOS device off and then on. Before opening anything else, run notes and see if you continue to have the same problem. This is to test if there is a memory issue occurring for you. A memory issue is extremely likely if you are running an iPhone 3GS. It is also somewhat likely on an iPhone 4. Apple added new features to iOS 6 which require more RAM memory use by iOS. Running an app on my iPhone which displays amount of memory being used by different running apps, it becomes obvious that VO uses a substantial amount of RAM. Re: vo talking during phone calls
VO reads whatever is in the area you've highlighted with a touch. If it starts reading the call timer and did not do so before, this is because you touched, no matter how lightly, the call timer. Take the iPhone away from your ear to activate the touch-screen and move VO to another field either by touching a different area on the screen, or using a right or left flick. If you have headphones on, the touch-screen always remains active. To silence VO, you can either do a three-finger double-tap to mute speech, or you can use a triple-tap of the home button to unload VO. Just remember to use the same gesture when you are finished with your call to get VO talking again. Re: Going to Dates In Calendar
If you are trying to go to a date to set an appointment, first set to all day. Then you have sliders to choose the month day and year. You can switch to month view and find a date that way, or move to the next or prior month and then look for a date. But there is not a way to quickly jump to a certain date, unless some advanced user knows something that I don't know, :) I do wish this were available, but oh well.
