Re: Importing audiobook from CD into iTunes question

2014-12-07 Thread Colin Matthews
Hi!
OK in iTunes in the get info window under details having tracks and CD’s
numbered will result in you having those 01-1 and 01-2 on your file name!
So like track 3 of 20 then disc 1 of 11 and on another 3 of 20 and disc 2 of 11
you should end up with 03-1 and 03-2 at the beginning of your file name!
I’m not sure if changing them to the audio book in iTunes will solve that
problem!

Yu can only double on 9, 10 and 11,otherwise you cannot double. You are
hitting which usually at 20 will lose your hand. If you don’t stay on 21

You would be surprised how many fools here in Las Vegas will hit on a 20 if
the dealer is showing an ace face up. I have a friend of mine who has been
a dealer for many a year. He says you can tell it in their eyes if they are
going to hit that 20. It's a suckers bet. Even when I'm playing a game on

A free, vi friendly game, great time waster, easy to access and play,
 voiced, and endless mindless amusement.

Haven't got the link, but bored-at-work blackjack is the name and it comes
up. in fact, Applevis have a podcast on it.

Cuz recommend it to me, so after wasted a while, I'm passing it on to

Re: iPhone 3GS

2014-12-07 Thread RobH.
Well, the 3GS was certainly the first with VoiceOver, and all versions of
the device afaik.
There's someone on the lists with an 8Gb iPhone 4; so it's not anissue of
insufficient memory.

Don't update a 3GS past 5.whatever, not that they could now; but I did iOs
6 on a 3GS and it ground to a halt. A pity, it had been quite good up until
then. Fond memories hah?

RE: Restoring aps from Itunes to my new iphone

2014-12-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Denise,

Is your new phone already set up? Normally if you receive a new phone you will
be asked at the end of the setup process if you want to set up as a new phone
or restore from a backup. If your phone is connected to iTunes, you can then
select the backup and it will be restored. If your phone is already set up,
just connect to iTunes, then go to the File menu, find “Devices” and from there
select “Restore”.

Find My Phone

2014-12-07 Thread Harry Bell
I have just found a solution to something that had long puzzled me : if you
have turned on Find My Phone, then if your phone software gets messed up or you
get a new phone after losing your old one, you will not be able to restore from
the backup on your iTunes because a pop up will tell you that you must first of
all turn off Find My Phone on the old device - and this you cannot do if you
cannot get into your old phone! Well, the solution is to go Online and sign in
to your iCloud account and remove the old device from your Find My Phone list
of devices : http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2702
Whew! I've now turned Find My Phone on for all my devices! Harry

Air Canada rents out iPads for access to the in-flight entertainment system

2014-12-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello,

Just thought I mention this recent experience when I flew back from Las
Vegas to Vancouver with Air Canada. Before the flight took off it was
announced that people should download the free Air Canada app and that once
the flight was in the air, WiFi would be turned on and people with the app
would then be able to access the in-flight entertainment system. This
airplane had no video screens or headphone jacks in the armrest and the only
way to access the in-flight entertainment system was with an iOS device or,
I think, you could also download the app from the Google app store for
Android devices.

For people who did not have an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, Air Canada
offered iPad rentals for I think $8 for the 2.5 hour flight, no Android
tablets were offered - great advertising for Apple even though the ipads
were not iPad Air models.

I did actually not bother with the app since WiFi was restricted to
accessing the in-flight system, there was no connection to the internet and
I had some good books from Audible on my iPhone, but I thought it was
interesting that there were no built-in video screens/headphone jacks and I
wonder if this will be the way things will go in the future. I also never
realized they had the iPad rentals until the end of the flight otherwise I
would have liked to see if the staff knew about Voiceover and how to turn it
on or even if the ipads had triple click home enabled.

Regards,

Sieghard

The only adjustment would be the distance you have the phone from the box
depending on the size of the box.

It is worth a try, but it depends a lot on the clarity of the print on the box.

If you are looking for directions on the box, you may find it just as easy to
go to www.directionsforme.com

And search for the item once you figure out what it is. That way, you would
not have to worry about numbers or words not getting scanned correctly.

Good luck,

RE: a question about Prizmo

2014-12-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Martin,

Could you be a bit more specific and maybe give some examples as to what
exactly you are hoping the app to read? You mention “labels on boxes”, but does
this mean you want to just recognize food items/packages or do you want to know
what the product is and in addition to that get details about information such
as ingredients, instructions and so on?

I am asking because if you are just looking to identify food products there are
better apps for that than either KNFB Reader or Prizmo. These include Camfind
(free), Talking Goggles (free) or Tap Tap See (requires you to buy credits for
taking pictures). There are, of course, also apps like Red Lazer (free) or
Digit eyes (paid) which are barcode scanners and where you need to find the
actual barcode.

I am pretty sure KNFB says that recognizing text on boxes/packages is less
successful than what you get if you scan a printed page, newspaper article,
magazine article and so on due to the various colours/backgrounds which might
be involved as well as font styles and sizes. I would, however, say that KNFB
Reader would perform better for a blind person for just about anything simply
because it will at least give you feedback as to whether you are holding your
phone straight and so on.

Regards,

Sieghard

You got me curious.
I got a box of Wheat Thins out of my cupboard.
I scaned one side knfb reader and got no text.
Turned the box over and got a bit of information, but nothing that would have
told me it was a box of Wheat Thins.
I then used Camfind, and in about 30 seconds, found out that it is a box of
Wheat Thins, low sodium, 250 G.
Then, I scanned the bar code on the bottom of the box with Digit-Eyes.
I double tapped on the more information button after also qlkly finding out it
was a box of wheat thins, and used VoiceOvers feature to copy the last thing
said to the clipboard and pasted the below into mBraille, which is how I'm
writing this.

Nabisco Wheat Thins Hint of Salt Crackers: A low-sodium choice 100% whole grain

If I want detailed food information off a box or can or whatever, I will use
Digit-Eyes, or the DirectionsForMe web site.
If I just want to know what it is, I will use CamFind.
But, I would not recommend using any OCR app since the font and color is often
a problem for text recognition.

The only adjustment would be the distance you have the phone from the box
depending on the size of the box.
It is worth a try, but it depends a lot on the clarity of the print on the
 box.

If you are looking for directions on the box, you may find it just as easy to
 go to www.directionsforme.com
And search for the item once you figure out what it is. That way, you would
not have to worry about numbers or words not getting scanned correctly.

 Good luck,

RE: digitize?

2014-12-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
No labelling required. For many products with UPC barcodes, the information
comes from a database just as with Red Laser and other barcode scanners.
You can, however, make your own labels for use with Digit eyes and they even
have clothing labels which can go through the washing machine. Thes of course
you need to setup with the information you want them to return when you scan
them.

Sieghard

Digit-Eyes is a paid bar code scanning app that has improved over time. It has

Here is the link in the app store if you want to take a look:

I have just found a solution to something that had long puzzled me : if you
have turned on Find My Phone, then if your phone software gets messed up or you
get a new phone after losing your old one, you will not be able to restore from
the backup on your iTunes because a pop up will tell you that you must first of
all turn off Find My Phone on the old device - and this you cannot do if you
cannot get into your old phone! Well, the solution is to go Online and sign in
to your iCloud account and remove the old device from your Find My Phone list

I think this threath originally referred to the app called Things which was
free for one day.
It is a good app, but I think it costs more than a lot of folks would want to
spend when there are other good ToDo apps that are free, including the built-in
reminders.
I got it when it was free, so I don't really know the price.

Duck Hunt Game

2014-12-07 Thread Jen Colley
Hi,
I have searched the app store but sometime ago, I thought I remembered someone
posting a duck hunt game. I mean like the one nintendo used to have as part of
its system.
I know there is a version for the pc but I thought there was one for the iPhone
as well.
Thanks.

Yes, Virgin Pacific, an Australian airline, has had the same sort of system for
the past year. Music and movie selection menus are accessible. Trip map, video
games, and reading materials are not accessible. Information about destinations

 Hello,

Just thought I mention this recent experience when I flew back from Las Vegas
to Vancouver with Air Canada. Before the flight took off it was announced
that people should download the free Air Canada app and that once the flight
was in the air, WiFi would be turned on and people with the app would then be
able to access the in-flight entertainment system. This airplane had no video
screens or headphone jacks in the armrest and the only way to access the
in-flight entertainment system was with an iOS device or, I think, you could
also download the app from the Google app store for Android devices.

For people who did not have an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, Air Canada offered
iPad rentals for I think $8 for the 2.5 hour flight, no Android tablets were
offered – great advertising for Apple even though the ipads were not iPad Air
 models.

I did actually not bother with the app since WiFi was restricted to accessing
the in-flight system, there was no connection to the internet and I had some
good books from Audible on my iPhone, but I thought it was interesting that
there were no built-in video screens/headphone jacks and I wonder if this
will be the way things will go in the future. I also never realized they had
the iPad rentals until the end of the flight otherwise I would have liked to
see if the staff knew about Voiceover and how to turn it on or even if the
ipads had triple click home enabled.

Re: how are people liking KNFB reader?

2014-12-07 Thread Kelly Pierce
I don’t need this app immediately. It still has some bugs that have
not yet been quashed. I have decided to wait to learn if another
company will be introducing another similar app at CSUN in March. If
someone else could deliver the quality and usability of the KNFB
Reader along with the ability to port business cards into contacts,
scan bar codes and display full product information as well as scan
and read out the entire text of a QR code, the other company would
have an ideal package of services to deliver on the app. The
limitation of the KNFB Reader is that it doesn’t do other scanning
chores and it has trouble saving to a cloud based storage system in a
widely used document format.

 Hi Joe,

The app is all access menus. This app can search by name, scan logos to
access business information, scan qr codes, automotive businesses ,
restaurants , entertainment, health related businesses, shopping, travel
related businesses , follow all access menus on twitter, visit all access
 on
the web, and review all access on the app store.

I just downloaded this app the other day and I decided to play around with
the app. For example I doubled tapped on the search by name and then
 theirs
a text field I doubled tapp on and the built in keyboard popped up and
 then
I typed in for example Bob Evans and tapped on the search button and many
different Bob Evans Restaurants showed up around 42 I think with the
different locations of each restaurant. Then I doubled tapped on the Bob
Evans location I wanted and it took me to another screen.

On this screen for Bob Evans theirs 5 options you can choose from and they
are menu, maps, phone, website and 4 square. Anyhow, I doubled tapped on
 the
menu option and hear is where you can read the entire Bob Evans menu.

I know I'm going to love this app with all the different things this app
 can
 do.

So I hope this helps you some. Take care.

Re: Restoring aps from Itunes to my new iphone

2014-12-07 Thread Gmail
In some cases, you need to restore from the iTunes backup twice in order to get
your apps to sync to your new phone. There's a section in iTunes that you can
see when you're looking at your iPhone. It's called the LCD area, and it will
tell you what's going on with your iPhone when it's being synced, backed up,
restored, etc. through iTunes.

an iTunes and Apple ID question.

2014-12-07 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, since the arrangement works for me, my work phone is the one I use, and
the Apple ID is one that the entire department uses, even though I'm the
primary user of the content most of the time. My question is, if I use iTunes
to load music onto an I device, will that register the songs so that another
user who logs into the Apple ID will get messages about the music I've loaded
onto my device? In other words, will it actually upload or reference from
device to device? There are a few devices from various coworkers on this ID,
and I don't get any info about what they may have on their devices, though they
may use their own Apple id. I hope I've explained this properly.
Thanks,
Matthew

Re: digitize?

2014-12-07 Thread Phil Vlasak
They have a web site too:
http://www.digit-eyes.com/

When at the super market, have your shopper put a piece of clear tape over the
bar code on packages. This even works on frozen dinners.
We can then feel the slight raised tape on the package and it only takes two or
three seconds to scan it with Digit-Eyes and get a report of what it is.
The app converts the bar code to a number then looks it up on its own data
base. If it doesn't find it the app looks it up on Google, or another search
engine and if that doesn't work it looks it up on your device to find if you
recorded the description.
Sometimes you get a more button that gives you ingredients and cooking
instructions.

RE: Transferring files to the iPad

2014-12-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Anne,

You can easily sync the files to any iPad. The problem, however, is that if
that iPad was synced with another library then all that content will be gone.
Even if there is no music on the iPad at this time and you sync a selection of
songs to said iPad, then if the owner ever wants to sync it with their own
computer whatever you put on it will be lost.
Which approach to take here would totally depend on what the owner of the iPad
plans to do in the future. If they never plan to sync the iPad with another
iTunes library then it's no problem. Otherwise it might be better to set them
up with a Dropbox account, put the music there (up to 2 Gb is free) and then
they could use the Dropbox app to listen to the music.
If the person has a laptop or computer, the best solution would be to copy the
music into their itunes media folder, add it to their itunes library and then
sync. This way they can always add more and resync.

Sieghard

I'll hazard: predictive text deals with what (iPhone, etc) thinks you're going
to type, while AutoCorrection deals with what you've already typed.

Re: Air Canada rents out iPads for access to the in-flight entertainment system

2014-12-07 Thread Christopher Chaltain
When I flew United a few months ago, they had a similar setup. I don't
recall them having tablets to rent though, and I don't recall it being
so Apple centric. I was also under the impression that wifi wasn't just
restricted to in flight services.

I wasn't able to play with anything on my iPhone though, since I wasn't
able to keep a wifi connection up long enough to download their app or
access anything else. It was probably user error. I didn't persist with
it very long since I already had a book or two from BARD downloaded to
my iPhone.

Hello,

Just thought I mention this recent experience when I flew back from
Las Vegas to Vancouver with Air Canada. Before the flight took off it
was announced that people should download the free Air Canada app and
that once the flight was in the air, WiFi would be turned on and
people with the app would then be able to access the in-flight
entertainment system. This airplane had no video screens or headphone
jacks in the armrest and the only way to access the in-flight
entertainment system was with an iOS device or, I think, you could
also download the app from the Google app store for Android devices.

For people who did not have an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, Air Canada
offered iPad rentals for I think $8 for the 2.5 hour flight, no
Android tablets were offered – great advertising for Apple even though
the ipads were not iPad Air models.

I did actually not bother with the app since WiFi was restricted to
accessing the in-flight system, there was no connection to the
internet and I had some good books from Audible on my iPhone, but I
thought it was interesting that there were no built-in video
screens/headphone jacks and I wonder if this will be the way things
will go in the future. I also never realized they had the iPad rentals
until the end of the flight otherwise I would have liked to see if the
staff knew about Voiceover and how to turn it on or even if the ipads
had triple click home enabled.

Sieghard

Location tracking, some clarification needed

2014-12-07 Thread Jan Kleinhans
Hi

I am using Ios 8.1.1 on a 4S, and am trying to understand the location services
and tracking. There are 2 options, always on, meaning it can run even in the
background, and then the never option. Now my question: if you choose the
never option, and you use an app that needs to use the location services,
will it ask for permission to use location services, or will one be presented
with the dialog where you need to go into settings, privacy, and so on, to
enable location services for the particular app. I would have thought that
there might be an third option, saying something like when needed making it
possible for the app to get the necessary permission to use location services.
Am I missing something here, or will apps ask for permission and then, when you
close the app, will location services be switched off again for that app?

Any help appreciated

Jan Kleinhans

Re: Location tracking, some clarification needed

2014-12-07 Thread Tom Lange
Hi,
I've seen plenty of cases where the app in question asks you to turn on
location services by going into Settings, Privacy and Location Services, and
location services will thereafter be set to Always even when the app isn't
being used. And there are other apps, like some native Apple apps, which will
request location services and you'll notice that the setting for the app is
while using. Examples of the latter include Maps, Compass and Passbook.
Perhaps there's some special code under the hood which allows the while using
setting, but since I know nothing about app programming I can only speculate.
Seems to me that the while using setting would be the ideal.

I bet there's someone out there who can elaborate on this much better than I
can.

Tom

close the app, will location services be switched off again for that app?

  Any help appreciated

Re: Location tracking, some clarification needed

2014-12-07 Thread Jan Kleinhans
Hi

Thanks for that. Yes, I've seen this with maps. But, google maps for
instance, won't work unless you switch location services on in settings, and
sometimes location tracking will then remain on even if the app is not working.
It is a pity that apps just can't ask to use it when necessary, and that would
then make sure that location tracking is switched off again when the app is not
running.

Thanks all the same for the answer.

  Hi,
I've seen plenty of cases where the app in question asks you to turn on
location services by going into Settings, Privacy and Location Services, and
location services will thereafter be set to Always even when the app isn't

I bet there's someone out there who can elaborate on this much better than I
can.

Subject: Location tracking, some clarification needed

Hi

I am using Ios 8.1.1 on a 4S, and am trying to understand the location
services and tracking. There are 2 options, always on, meaning it can run even
in the background, and then the never option. Now my question: if you choose
the never option, and you use an app that needs to use the location services,
will it ask for permission to use location services, or will one be presented
with the dialog where you need to go into settings, privacy, and so on, to
enable location services for the particular app. I would have thought that
there might be an third option, saying something like when needed making it
possible for the app to get the necessary permission to use location services.
Am I missing something here, or will apps ask for permission and then, when you
close the app, will location services be switched off again for that app?

Any help appreciated

I have just found a solution to something that had long puzzled me : if
you have turned on Find My Phone, then if your phone software gets messed
up or you get a new phone after losing your old one, you will not be able
to restore from the backup on your iTunes because a pop up will tell you
that you must first of all turn off Find My Phone on the old device - and
this you cannot do if you cannot get into your old phone! Well, the
solution is to go Online and sign in to your iCloud account and remove the
old device from your Find My Phone list of devices :

Whew! I've now turned Find My Phone on for all my devices! Harry
