Smart Bulbs With Alexa?

2020-08-28 Thread Fazil
Hi, list.

I do apologize if admins think that this is not directly related to iPhone.

I live in an older apartment building in Vancouver, Canada.

I got Echo Dot and installed Alexa from the App-Store.

I have three questions,

1.

Can I use smart light-bulbs in old buildings?

2.

Can I use smart bulbs along with traditional bulbs?

I mean I want smart bulbs at a couple of places only.

3.

Does smart bulb work with mechanical switch too?

Thanks!

RE: Still no luck with Audible

2020-08-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I am in Canada and as somebody else already pointed out, this feature is not
yet available here. However, is this not an option which would disappear after
a while? What I mean is that I thought you can only return a book within a
certain time frame, not sure what it is, but I wonder if Mary checked this for
a book she purchased recently or one she purchased more than 2 or 3 months ago.

Mary,

I'm not usually a fan of what I'm going to suggest because it sounds like one
of those standard boilerplate recommendations but you might delete and
reinstall the Audible app. I'm only suggesting this if you're sure you have the
most recent version installed and you haven't downloaded a lot of titles to
your device. It just isn't right that the Exchange this title option doesn't
appear when you open the menu of one of your Audible library books.

Siri's volume is often different from VO. When
that happened to me the VO volume was turned down
even though Siri spoke at a comfortable

On your phone you should be able to dig deeper in to the POP 3 account

I can’t remember exactly but it’s off one of the mail box addresses in this

Have a look and see what you can find.

Sorry I no longer have a pop account to try this with.

flights are a couple of hours. I am happy listening to an album.
Honestly, it gets a little weird listening to an artist at different
ends of their career. The 1963 bob Dylan is different from the 1973
bob Dylan. Similarly, I don’t like the early Grateful Dead albums.
The same is true for Miles Davis first albums. I am told I am the
only or one of the few with Beats over the ear headphones on during a
cross country airplane ride.

I don't think anyone should have to pay $40 to sync music to their phone,
something any sighted person can do. And I have enough music that I can't
just keep adding stuff to my phone; I have to rotate it.

I do not currently have Apple Music so my library is not in the cloud.

RE: Still no luck with Audible

2020-08-28 Thread Alan Lemly

Mary,

I apologize if you already said you'd done this but have you checked your
profile which is the last option on the right of the Audible app bottomline
toolbar? When I check that, it states the various features of my Audible
account including a separate button for exchanges. I'm curious whether

Well, I did sign out of my Audible account on one of my phones and then sign

want to return something, i’ll just have to do it the old-fashioned way on the

Re: Syncing Music from iTunes Library to iPhone

2020-08-28 Thread Kelly Pierce
I have not tried making a playlist because I have never wanted to. I
don’t have a smart speaker so I usually do not listen to iPhone music
at home. The subway trip to downtown is just 20 minutes and most
flights are a couple of hours.

I agree the way you get dumped back to the top when trying to select

Some people say that Waltr2 is easier to use to sync music to your
 iPhone.
I think it around $40, but I think everyone should be writing Apple
and complaining about the problem when you would want to only sync a
 portion of your library.

I don’t know if this still works or not, but here’s a knowledge base page on

You can change these settings in Outlook Express under the advanced tab and the
servers tab while using pop 3.

As far as I am concerned, such setting does not exist from a mail client.
Things must be changed on the server side IE. Gmail.com if that is the email
provider.

I have seen settings in the past for pop3 where emails will be moved to the
mail client but keep the copy on the server side.

If you want emails to be deleted on the mail client and server side, imap
configuration is what you want. This can be changed on the server side via
settings.

I’m not running POP3 anywhere, so I can’t look for this setting myself, but
there should be a setting in your email client that says something like delete
messages from the server when I delete them on this device. Ditto when you move
a message to a folder. Until the messages are actually deleted from your
server, they’ll continue to be downloaded.

there anywhere on the phone that you can turn off to save a copy of messages on

Re: an email or gmail question

2020-08-28 Thread Kay Malmquist
Here is the strange part of the whole thing. On my computer I have, save
messages on the server for one day. That way if I look on my iphone, after
I have checked my messages on the computer, they will still be there. But
after that day is up, they will disappear from my iPhone because they are
off the server. If I delete the messages from my computer they go off the
server right away and I don't get them on my iPhone. But even if they are
still on the server, my iphone will not retrieve them again. Yes, I do
have a pop account and not an imap. I just want to know where he might go
to find a setting that will not let his iPhone retrieve messages he has
already read. I hope this makes some sense.

pop three is the problem here. If your email service provider allows you,
you may want to consider to switch to IMAP configuration. This will allow
the server to sync with your mail app

Alan is correct. I also have the exchange this title option if I
enter on the menu of an audible book. However, I always have to call

 Mary,

When I'm in my Library tab on the iOS Audible app and double tap the
Menu button to the right of one of my listed books, I get a list of
vertically stacked options one of which is Exchange this title.

Someone in a WhatsApp group I am part of says that he is able to
exchange audible books from within the iOS audible app. If you go to
your library, get the list of books that you have downloaded, and double
tap on the menu next to one of those books,

you get a bunch of choices, one of which is supposed to be return or
exchange this book. I have tried this, not because I wanted to exchange
something, but just because I wanted to see if I have a choice. And I
dont. The books I tried it on or a couple of

recently purchased books. So they definitely met the criteria for
possible exchange. But Im not seeing this choice. Is anyone else seeing
 it?

2020-08-28 Thread Alan Lemly
Mary,

I expect you've made sure you're running the latest Audible app version so I'm
not even going to ask. I will say that when Audible introduced the ability to
purchase new titles using an Audible credit, I did not have that option
available when drilling down on a title I wanted to buy. I had to sign out of
my account with the app, sign back in, and then it was there. You might try
doing that to see if you get different results.

Well, Michael, I am in the states, and I don’t have that option. I have all of
the other options, including send this book and add to favorites, but exchange
is definitely not there. Multiple books on more than one phone show zip. Maybe
it’s because I get all my credits at once? Seems very odd.

Ever heard of Eudora?
And not that I can check it as I don’t use pop or imap,
I believe outlook lets you do this also.

Hi all,
I have a strange one for you. I am trying to figure out why when my husband
goes through his emails on his phone and deletes them and even empties the
trash folder, when he goes back in to read more, these emails come back. Is
there anywhere on the phone that you can turn off to save a copy of messages on

you have any other ideas? Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

I think a couple of those options, "sendd this book" and "exchange this

Re: Returning or exchanging audible books using the iOS audible app

2020-08-28 Thread Mary Otten
That is certainly interesting. I have two phones, both of which have my Audible
account on them, and I never see that choice for return or exchange in the menu
and I have tried for several books on each phone. It’s absolutely not there.
And as far as I know, my Audible is up-to-date. Very weird.

I just checked, and if you flick right once from the title of the book and
double tap on the button labeled Menu, The buttons are:
Book Details,
Rate and Review,
Mark as Finished,
Exchange this title,
Send This Boo,
Add to favorites,

Someone in a WhatsApp group I am part of says that he is able to exchange
audible books from within the iOS audible app. If you go to your library, get
the list of books that you have downloaded, and double tap on the menu next to
one of those books, you get a bunch of choices, one of which is supposed to be
return or exchange this book. I have tried this, not because I wanted to
exchange something, but just because I wanted to see if I have a choice. And I
dont. The books I tried it on or a couple of recently purchased books. So they
definitely met the criteria for possible exchange. But Im not seeing this
choice. Is anyone else seeing it?

RE: Syncing Music from iTunes Library to iPhone

2020-08-28 Thread Richard Turner
You'll get no argument from me.
Hence, everyone and their dog should be writing to Apple and/or Microsoft if
using itunes on a Windows computer.

I only have about 46 GB of music so I don't have to deal with this.

I don't think anyone should have to pay $40 to sync music to their phone,
something any sighted person can do. And I have enough music that I can't just
keep adding stuff to my phone; I have to rotate it.

I have sub-folders for bands and genres, such as heavy metal and jazz.
I have added music to my iPhone over time so the burden of adding
individual albums to my iTunes library is not too taxing at any one
session. Some bands are timeless. Now that my Grateful Dead and
Metallica albums are on my iPhone, I am not taking them off. I can
listen to these bands over and over again.

Re: Returning or exchanging audible books using the iOS audible app

2020-08-28 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Alex,
I don’t know about outside the United States, but here in the states, you can
exchange or return an audible book by accessing the purchase history in your
account, on either the regular website or the mobile website. This deal with
doing it in the iOS app is new to me, but this guy insists it works for him. I
just don’t see the setting anywhere where it supposed to be.

RE: an email or gmail question

2020-08-28 Thread Feliciano Godoy
As far as I am concerned, such setting does not exist from a mail client.
Things must be changed on the server side IE. Gmail.com if that is the email
provider.

I have seen settings in the past for pop3 where emails will be moved to the
mail client but keep the copy on the server side.

If you want emails to be deleted on the mail client and server side, imap
configuration is what you want. This can be changed on the server side via
settings.

And I
don’t. The books I tried it on or a couple of recently purchased books. So they
definitely met the criteria for possible exchange. But I’m not seeing this
choice. Is anyone else seeing it?

Re: Syncing Music from iTunes Library to iPhone

I don't think anyone should have to pay $40 to sync music to their phone,
something any sighted person can do. And I have enough music that I can't just
keep adding stuff to my phone; I have to rotate it.

I have sub-folders for bands and genres, such as heavy metal and jazz.
I have added music to my iPhone over time so the burden of adding
individual albums to my iTunes library is not too taxing at any one

Hello,
The only issue I have with kindle books is that you have to keep the screen on
in order to read the books. Other than that kindle books are great. If you find
yourself wanting to read a lot, there is a kindle unlimited subscription for
$10 a month. I just signed up for it today for six months to try it out.

I have a library approaching 3000 Kindle books and read them exclusively on my
iPHONE. The Kindle app has been accessible since around 2013. Some Kindle books
are too graphical to support VoiceOver but this is relatively rare. Typically,
it's because a book is a graphic novel or comic. Look in the information in the
book's entry on the Amazon site. You need to buy Kindle books from the Amazon
site local to your country. Also, you'll need to register the Kindle app after
installing it on your iPHONE. I have a section about this in the guide I wrote.
Enjoy the book.

RE: wireless charging pads

2020-08-28 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Casey,

I only have one device to charge so I prefer using cables and charging while
either plugged into my computer or in an outlet with a charging block. But I
also prefer the wired Apple earpods to any Bluetooth earphones I've used so I
might have a bit of a bias in favor of wires over wireless. I also have one of
those Anker 18W chargers that use a USB C to lightning cable and enjoy how fast
it charges my iPhone SE 2020.

I certainly understand why those with multiple devices would prefer a wireless
charging pad that can accommodate more than one device. But that's not me and
since the wireless charging pad also has to be plugged into an outlet, I prefer
to just use a cable.

Good luck with your research and charging.

Alan Lemly

RE: Question About the Newer Phones

2020-08-28 Thread chaffin102468
A couple of things:

When taking a picture, instead of trying to tap on the button on the screen,
after starting the camera app, you can take a picture by just pressing the down
volume button.

I have never used this myself, but there is a setting where you can adjust how
long you have to touch the screen before it recognizes it. Maybe someone else
might know more about this setting.

Go to Settings, Accessibility, Touch.
Swipe until you get to Touch accommodations and double tap.
If this setting is turned on, there is a hold duration setting on this screen
plus more.
It looks like the default touch duration is 0.1 seconds.
Again, I just found this by looking around in the settings, so I do not know
how it might change any other settings like for voice over.

Hope this helps.

Chris

She says tap to wake is off and she is still having trouble. She says this:
What happens is if I touch the corners for example when taking a picture it
will open multiple screens all at once that I have to close again to take the
picture . It happens from touching the corners or if I’m texting and I go to
hit the space bar and hit just below it will close it down which that part is
because of the touch on the bar. It’s just irritating. Not really sure why it
closes down when taking pictures but it makes me miss shots all the time. It’s
not the tap to wake button. I do have that off.

RE: wireless charging pads

2020-08-28 Thread Carolyn
I love having my wireless charging pads, yes, plural. One is by my computer and
one by my recliner. I do not think that they charge as fast as my cable, so do
occasionally charge with the cable. I got one at Wal-Mart for $19.99 and one at
the Salvation Army for 99 ¢. Both work. My phone does not over heat. I keep a
plastic cover over them when not in use to keep dust out.

Mine are five volts. I could have gotten a 10 volt one at Wal-Mart for $29.99,
but I'd rather a little slow than fast. Just my opinion, that the slower is
probably better for the phone.

It can also be found on the Applevis site. Thanks to a couple of very kind
people, it's available in Daisy Audio and electronic Braille as well as

Where can I get the guide you wrote?

I have a library approaching 3000 Kindle books and read them exclusively on my
iPHONE. The Kindle app has been accessible since around 2013. Some Kindle books
are too graphical to support VoiceOver but this is relatively rare. Typically,
it's because a book is a graphic novel or comic. Look in the information in the
book's entry on the Amazon site. You need to buy Kindle books from the Amazon
site local to your country. Also, you'll need to register the Kindle app after
installing it on your iPHONE. I have a section about this in the guide I wrote.
Enjoy the book.

I have hundreds of gigs of music, so that is impossible. The last version of
iTunes I had didn't do this but I don't recall what it was now.

Re: Are Kindle Books Accessible?

2020-08-28 Thread Ketan Kothari
Hi Dani,

Kindle books are very accessible on Iphone. You can navigate through
them very well and voiceover works with the Kindle app very well.
Please go ahead and read it.

Are Kindle Books Accessible?

2020-08-28 Thread dani pagador
Hi, Everyone.
I need to get hold of a book ASAP and am looking at my options for
reading it. I see from searching for the book on Amazon that a Kindle
edition is available. How VO-friendly is this app?

Thanks,
Dani

Re: Changing VO Voice on Apple Watch 4

2020-08-28 Thread 'Harry Bell' via VIPhone
On my watch 4 this feature has never worked. On my iPhone, I have always had
Siri female voice and my watch has resolutely stuck to Siri male, despite
having”use Siri voice” being turned on. I have reset all settings on both
devices and even erased all content and settings on both devices and yet the
problem persists.

Hello,
Yes, I use wireless charging pads once in a while. I got some from Amazon when

brand they are, but there were two for $23.
