It waited several months before doing so. And, when the phone was released, there was a major back up, so people waited weeks before getting their phones. That is fairly typical for Apple phone releases, and they admitted that they underestimated the demand for this particular phone. So, you have a case where people just purchased phone maybe in June or July, and here we are in September almost, traditional iPhone release time. If Apple releases a new SE now in sync with all of its other phone releases, I think the folks who purchased their phones recently are going to be upset. You know, Apple, why didn't you release this phone last fall with all of the others? Why did you wait over half a year, then release the phone, and right on top of it, release another one? That's why I figure people would not be happy. I'd assume anyone who knows Apple knows they release new phones in the fall, so I'd think anyone who bought an SE would know that there would be a chance Apple might include a smaller form factor phone in this fall's line up. I don't think Apple would ever promise not to refresh a phone model any more frequently than once a year. Exactly, the majority of users will not have a mobile phone for 4 let alone 5 years. Those who do and for whom the phone still works for the most part couldn't care less if they are getting another year or two out of their phone being on the older version of the software. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Christopher Chaltain Sent: Saturday, August 27, 2016 11:00 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Need opinions about waiting for iPhone 7 or getting SE Is this really Apple's rule? Christopher, It is four upgrades and the last upgrade lasts for a year so the iPhone 7 will likely stop being upgraded in 2021. sieghard, I have noticed that people use their iPads for far fewer tasks than iPhones. Many use iPads for games, videos, porno, and e-mail. These tasks don't usually benefit from much faster processors.Kelly On 8/27/16, Terje Strømberg <terjestrmb...@gmail.com> wrote: > Well, if a person have a working iPhone and are patient and care for > technology, there is no problem wait until iPhone 7 is launced. Is this really Apple's rule? I couldn't find anything on line with a quick web search. I remember everyone was surprised when Apple continued to support the 4S with IOS 9, which would have been four years and not five, if the 4S would have stopped at IOS 8. Whether it's a rule or not, and whether it's four or five years, Apple's support for older hardware is truly outstanding in the mobile space. I would agree that if you're worried about whether you get an IOS upgrade or the SE in 2020 then you should wait to see what the fall brings. As Sieghard says though, the SE will still work on the last version of IOS it supports even if you can't move up to the next version. Also, how many people hold on to their smart phones that long in the first place? I've seen us 4S users on this list get responses that we should just upgrade, even when asking questions that have nothing to do with the 4S and it's hardware. On 27/08/16 08:37, Sieghard Weitzel wrote: Knowing that this is Apple's rule at this point it doesn't mean this will change. Also, if somebody who couldn't care less about the latest features had an iPhone 4S which still worked well for what they are doing they can still use it for years to come with iOS 9.3.5. Of course the reality is that a device that is 5 or 6 or even 7 years old will most likely need a new battery and why pay for that if you could get whatever iPhone is free on contract. The exception here would be somebody who maybe is happy to use the iPhone 4S with a prepaid service or with a low-cost MVNO. My Mom has an iPad 2 from 2011 which also will not get iOS 10 this year. She already asked me if she could still use it and I said that of course she can since while it is a bit slow compared to new devices, it is still going strong. The SE is based on 2015 technology and likely cannot accept the new iOS in 2020. The iPhone 7 will likely not be able to receive a new iOS in 2021, based on past Apple practice. For example, the 4s will not be able to accept iOS 10 that will be out later this year. Anyhow, when it comes down to it Apple couldn't care less if they made 10% of their user base mad, after all, they did this with the iPad a few years ago. Also, for whatever it's worth, I don't think they are going to release a new 4 inch phone in September, at this point there would be many more rumours and some of which from sources who in the past have been very credible and there are no such rumours. It waited several months before doing so. And, when the phone was released, there was a major back up, so people waited weeks before getting their phones. That is fairly typical for Apple phone releases, and they admitted that they underestimated the demand for this particular phone. Re: Need opinions about waiting for iPhone 7 or getting SE
Hi Rose, what phone do you have? Which network are you on? Those bar readings are not all that accurate. There is another way where you can actually get the true signal reading. But of course, I don't remember what it is, and it may very from carrier to carrier. If you have an older phone with an older radio, and your visitors have newer phones, that may account for the difference, or at least some of it. If I can I will wait and see what the 7 has that I might want, then I will decide which phone I wish to have, if I get a new one. Four years worth of upgrades for a phone is pretty good in my opinion, given that even with Nexus devices, you're only guaranteed to upgrades. And many other android devices don't give you that many. RE: 5 years? Re: Need opinions about waiting for iPhone 7 or getting SE
The iPhone 5C was indeed released in 2013 alongside the 5S, but from a technology view it is more like iPhone 5 technology since it does not yet have a 64 bit processor. Anyhow, iOS 11 will come out in 2017 (next year) not in 2018, that would be iOS 12. Therefore it is the iPhone 5 which still gets iOS 10 this year, but not iOS 11 next year and as I said, I wouldn't be surprised if next year support for all non-64 Bit devices would be dropped, the 5S would still get iOS 11 but probably not iOS 12 in 2018. RE: Need opinions about waiting for iPhone 7 or getting SE
Knowing that this is Apple's rule at this point it doesn't mean this will change. Christine and listers I'd take your daughter's 5C for a few weeks or months, wait for the comments on how the new iPhone 7 is working, and based on those, and as some of the others have said on here, depending on what screen size you want/prefer to work with, either upgrade to the SE, or the 7. Re: Need opinions about waiting for iPhone 7 or getting SE
Missing from this discussion is that Apple stops providing upgrade ability to iPhones after five years. The SE is based on 2015 technology and likely cannot accept the new iOS in 2020. The iPhone 7 will likely not be able to receive a new iOS in 2021, based on past Apple practice. For example, the 4s will not be able to accept iOS 10 that will be out later this year. I just wonder what Apple's long term plans are. Are they going to eventually sync the SE up with the rest of the IOS products or are they going to continue to have multiple hardware releases in the year? I can see where a spring release might take some of the thunder away from the other smart phone manufacturers who line their product releases up with the show in Barcelona, but I also know that operating system development is more complicated when you have to support different hardware schedules. Re: Need opinions about waiting for iPhone 7 or getting SE
I suppose, but wouldn't this also be true for someone who just bought an iPhone 6S? I guess someone might have bought an SE recently thinking Apple wouldn't refresh it this fall, because as you said, Apple didn't release the SE until the spring, but Apple doesn't make guarantees, and if you were going to be upset in this case then you probably should have kept waiting to make sure, at least IMHO. I should confess that I'm not a proponent of waiting myself, although I did hold on to my 4S for over four years. Of course it depends on the situation. If you've got a phone you're not unhappy with and a new release is right around the corner, then sure go ahead and wait. I bought my iPhone 4S in the summer, and sure, I could have waited four months when the iPhone 5 came out, but then I would have been using my old Nokia, which I loved when it was new, for another four months. The iPhone 5 was a nicer phone when it came out, but my 4S served me well for over four years, and I have no regrets. That being said, I did make trips to AT twice yearly to check out the new batch of iPhones in the fall and the new batch of Samsung phones in the spring. Each time, I decided I'd wait another six months to see what would come out next. My wife was convinced I'd never get a new phone until my 4S fell apart. Of course, in this situation, I had a phone I wasn't unhappy with, so I had no problems waiting. With the rumors swirling around about what the fall might bring, and given how old my 4S was and that it wouldn't be seeing another IOS, I finally decided I didn't need to keep waiting, so I took the plunge and finally upgraded my 4S this summer. Some people may be mad, but as Christopher said, it's up to everybody to do their research. There will also be a lot of users who are not super technical users who couldn't care less if a new smaller form factor phone were released. They may hear about it in a news article from a major news outlet, but the fact is that a large majority of people are users who do not necessarily follow each Apple Event. RE: Need opinions about waiting for iPhone 7 or getting SE
I doubt the form factor of the iPhone 7 will be different from the 6/6 Plus and 6S/6S Plus. Hi. 16 gig is large compared to what I used to have. I had a 5c with 8 gig of storeage. Earlier this year I got a 6s plus with 128 gig of storeage. A couple of weeks ago I gave my old iPhone to my Niece. I'm thrilled with all the extra storeage that I now have. Have a blessed day and don't work too hard. Given there's a choice, I'd borrow the 5C and wait. Using upgrade and regretting it next month would be a bummer. You could still have an sE or the new equivalent, or even find it reduced in price once it wasn't a front line product. don't think we ever had a phone at launch, though did have the iPqad Mini when it first came out. Also, if you want the home button, which from what I read they could be removing it… don't quote me on that, you might want to consider one of the older models. Re: Need opinions about waiting for iPhone 7 or getting SE
That is a one off in my opinion. I could be wrong, but given the fact that the SE came out what was it, spring? It's still selling well. If they come out with a new one now, with no good reason to do so,… Well, we'll see. No, I agree with you there. Although, again that's personal preference. I'd either use my braille sense or a stream for it, but if anything, I prefer books in text. Still, if we find out more about what the phone could be used for, we may be able to help more accurately. Hi, it depends on what you use it for, though. I still have plenty of room on my 16 GB 5S, and that even has the beta, which, as we know, takes room to even install, but would rather not say too much. Hi, It depends on if you have a family member or another person who needs a phone. At has a buy one get one free until the end of the month. Re: Need opinions about waiting for iPhone 7 or getting SE
I've read rumors that there will be a 32 GB option of the iPhone 7. We will see in a few weeks when we know more, but that was one of many rumors of the new iPhone. I hope they do though, since 16 GB is extremely small. Good for those on a budget, but not much else. This may also depend on whether you want the larger screen, more than likely, the iphone 7 will have a larger screen as the 6 and 6 plus do, not sure if Apple will have a newer SE version with the iphone 7 specs, so if you want the smaller screen, the iphone SE might be a good choice, should be interesting to see what Apple introduces though. Re: Need opinions about waiting for iPhone 7 or getting SE
The SE is a really good phone with awesome battery life. Sound quality is nice as well. If you like the smaller screen, go for it. The phone is also much cheaper than the other at $399. Re: Need opinions about waiting for iPhone 7 or getting SE
Hi Christine, Here is another possible point in favor of getting the iPhone now rather than waiting. If you are the type who does not like to rush out and get the first version of a new OS that comes out, getting the phone now will mean that you can keep iOS 9 until you are satisfied that I OS X is going to work for you. If you don't care about that, or perhaps you've been using the beta or you know people who have, and they told you that it works great with voiceover, and this is not a consideration. Otherwise, getting the phone now will alleviate the need to jump right in when the new OS is first out. Mary Sent from my iPhone > On Aug 26, 2016, at 9:14 AM, M. Hello Christine, Were I you, given the situation as you have described it, this is to say, you have access to an interim phone to use until the release of iPhone 7, I would recommend that you wait until iPhone 7 is released before using your upgrade privileges. Re: Need opinions about waiting for iPhone 7 or getting SE
Well, since you said you like the small screen, that would be a definite point in favor of the SE. As you probably know, the se does not have thethe 3D Touch feature, and that is going to have more use in the new OS. But if you don't care, go for the SE. Why not? Also, if you care about the headphone jack, chances are very good that the new phone is not going to have one. If you are OK with 64 GB of storage, that would be another point in favor. The newer models are said to have more storage capacity. Re: Need opinions about waiting for iPhone 7 or getting SE
If it were me, I would use the old phone until you see the 7 and what it has to offer. You could still get the SE at that point if you want and maybe get a better price after the new phone comes out.
