Airport issues

2003-06-30 Thread Keith Palmer, Zytech
Just in case anyone else suffers connection problems after installing
the most recent Airport updater I had the exact same problem as
listed below and here is the solution. Thanks to Robin Belford
and the Macintouch website for this -

[Michael Cashwell] Like Nick Perry and Henry Rexroad, I too installed
both the Airport 3.1 and the 2nd version of the June security update
on my 1GHz iMac last night to find that it totally trashed my
Ethernet interface. I also noticed that many (most) fonts were not
available. I tried fixing permissions, deleting receipts and
installing older versions of those packages, etc. all without >
success.
As I only use this machine to manage my Airport base station via
the wired network (it doesn't even have an Airport card) I don't
need the Airport kernel modules.
So I did two things: deleted (sudo rm -rf) all the Airport kexts
in /System/Library/Extensions/ and deleted the file
/System/Library/Extensions.kextcache knowing the system would
recreate it. Upon rebooting, all was well. I don't know which of
those two things really did it, but perhaps this will help the
others who are having this problem. It looks like Apple's slipping
back into the bad habit of releasing poorly-tested updates.

the above should read :

A e-tax is not compatible with Linux or Apple Macintosh computers.
However, if you have nobble your computer with Windows Emulator software

may be able to use e-tax."

I wish the tax office would get with the 21 centuary and support *nix (which
includes OsX) more and more PC users who have control over their PC are
switching to *nix, it costs less, is more reliable... less viri

This is usually a problem with the power supply, specifically if just
plugged in the mains, it could be a start-up issue with the SMPS driver. If
it happens both at start-up and drops out while running, it is either a
thermal fault (i.e. something getting too hot) a bad solder joint, or an
over current shutdown.

This raises an issue with designs, some power supplies are on their limit
when sent from the factory, you add a bigger HDD, more ram, a bigger battery
pack and the poor power supply suffers :o(

usually another power supply will fix the problem :o)

Easy mate, a hub will have all ports the same speed, usually 10Mbits/S.

A Switch will have the ability to CONVERT different speeds IE older switches
are 10 and 100Mbits/S while newer ones are 10/100/1000 Mbits/S

Hope this helps.

I always by switches, as you never know when a slow machine will come along
(older Mac, laptop etc)

Actually, packages/bundles ("a rose by any other name...") were supported
from Mac OS 9.0, and work much like they do in Mac OS X.

Apple has a page at
that describes OS 9's support.

In OS 9, I believe it is a flag in the folder information that determines
whether a folder acts as a folder or acts as a package. If the flag on a
package gets unset for some reason during a copy, then utilities like
ResEdit, Resourceror, or FileTyper (available from
) should be able to set it right
again.

Well, I just tried loading http://www.telstra.com.au/ in Safari 1.0 (v85).

I got the usual bouncing redirection between a few pages, and then Safari
stopped at a page named something like "SMIDENTITY" where Safari complained
it wasn't getting any data from the server (and therefore it's purpose as a
web browser became somewhat questionable). I'm guessing their scripts for
browser recognition aren't working quite right.

A reload later and it went right through.

Hi all,

Fran (my wife) is doing some audio transcription work. The audio
currently comes on VHS tape and the VCR user interface leaves to be
desired.

I'm running a PB1400 with OS 8.6 with gobs of disk space.

I could write a Hypercard Stack that records for 45 minutes, then offers
playback at xyz speed, has a rewind two seconds button, but I'd rather
not if I didn't have to.

I've gone through all my old development CD's but they seem to be
developed for ancient QuickTime under OS 7.x (7.5 at best I think).

Anyone got any bright ideas?

If you hold down the option button in QuickTime player (or some
option-shift-control combination) you should see a slider that lets
you control playback speed.

Alternatively you could try Amazing Slow Downer, lets you slow down
audio without shifting the frequency (no chipmunks :)

Re: Carbon App becomes a folder when copied...

2003-06-30 Thread Mark Secker
Vanilla Classic (hmmm sounds like a type of Coke (tm)) doesn't
support the concept of "packages" and it just sees it for what it is,
a folder. given that this is almost certainly an OSX only
application then there is no need to unstuffit on an OS 9 box so
purpose of copying is.?

If just to archive then stuffit then copy but don't unstuff until you
have copied it back to an OSX box.

If wanting to run application on OS 9 then install from original installer.

Look at it the same way as the old 580x0 software V's PowerPC only
software V's Fat software back in the mid 90's (if you're a mac user
from that far back)

Some Programs like say "Bryce" will run native under both OSX and OS
9 and install exactly the same on both platforms - that is, without
packages, these programs will copy between OS boxes no problems (look
out for stuff added to librarys and/or OS 9 "System Folder") and will
run on both OS's from a single install.

Other programs install a separate OSX _or_ OS9 version depending on
the choise you make in the installer.

So instead reinstall from original installer.

Others have separate OSX or only mac Classic installers.
check original media for classic installer or download the classic
installer from web site.

I have an application (prog.app) that I am trying move to another machine.

When I copy it over the network (or stuff/copy/expand it) it becomes a folder!

Both machines are running OS 9.2.2 (or one OS X / the other 9.2.2.)

Any ideas people?

Cheers, Antony.

Sendmail is installed by default in OS X, you just need to a) turn it
on (), and b)
understand it (many people have wasted their lives trying to do this).

If you're going to install an SMTP server I'd recommend fink installing postfix

You can always use the fink describe command to tell you what

Using iChat AV over personal ADSL in Oz

Hi,

I had these problems with the bricks. The two bricks ended up in 3
parts instead of 2 and I replaced an extra in the product recall.

I also had the soundcard replaced when the solder on the powerport
went due to the jiggling required.

The yoyo's have been going great though. My last one lasted 2 years.
Luckily I had a spare and now in need of a new spare.

The things are pains. Apple seems to have alot of problems designing
a power supply for the long term.

Back to the repair store.

G3 power supply question

2003-06-30 Thread Susan Hastings

Keith I meant my question to go to everyone.

When ibook goes to sleep 'cos battery is low, I'm not getting the
warning that gives me time to plug in power. Seems since 10.2.6
installed this has gone. Is there a way to restore it?

Cheers, Susan.

Nothing more to offer at this stage as I have loaned by battery to a

get my battery back on Wednesday so I'll see if the problem persists.

Wondering if any other G4 PowerBook owners have noticed this little
issue that I've had with mine and if so have any ideas?

Some times when setting up/powering up the Powerbook when on mains
supply there is no light on the (powerbook side) plug of the charger.
while it is easy enough to fix by removing the mains side plug from
the adaptor and plugging it back in again it doesn't seem to be
caused by a loose connection been broken then remade as some times
the problem arises when I switch off the power-board and switch it
back on.

The issue is not major in and of it's self but given that the
resulting battery discharge is cumulatively diminishing my
PowerBooks total battery life this could be an expensive issue in a
year or so.

I have not been able to find anything via Google or Apple tech site
(though my search criterea might have been off)

Re: Battery Not Charging?

2003-06-30 Thread Mark Secker
This is a curious issue and I wish I had an answer for you but only
more "weirdness"- I have on my desk two "dead" YoYo power supplies
from two G3 powerbooks. None of my users have had issues with these
before Friday so I've never had a close look at one until Friday.
Both YoYo units were stone cold showing that they were non functional
and I replaced both units with brick power supplies from our loan
PowerBooks. My first thought, seeing the unshielded wires at the base
end was that the insulation on the units had shrunk exposing the
wires to friction and that there was contact between the shield
negative and the core positive. However a Google search seemed to
suggest this lack of outer covering is normal.

However I plugged the two YoYo supplies in to the loan computers and
left them over the weekend with the computers switched on but asleep.
This morning both units have full battery charge (they would have
drained over the weekend on battery even in sleep mode) and both
supply units are warm to the touch.

So sorry no answers just more of the same question.

FYI have a look at
which may help though not this is a legal not technical site.

Hi,

Something strange has happened to my g3 powerbook.

My yoyo powersupply stopped working tonight and when I got my
spare out (I have now managed to go through 2 bricks and 2
yoyos) I noticed that the battery wasn't charging.

No problem - fast forward an hour an it still isn't charging. I have
reseated the battery and restarted the computer and no joy.

It has also been in the shop recently to have the hinges replaced
(this probably has no link at all)

Anyone have any suggestions as I don't want to leave it hooked
up to mains in this weather.

Help?.please?

Aurora
