installing the Combo update and attach the link for the rest who
follow the legendary guru like me.

Hi Susan,

I haven't had any problems since installing OS X 10.5.7. I did
install the Combo, I didn't install using Software Update.
I always install the Combo versions of OS updates. The Mac OS X
Update Combo is 729MB size. It installed without any hiccups and I
have not experienced any problems so far.
It took approx. 14 mins to install and does two restarts (so don't
panic when it seems to hang a bit after the first restart).

Cheers,
Ronni

Hard disk suddenly full

2009-08-06 Thread Barry Sexstone

For the last few months the available space on my HD has remained
fairly static at about half the total (~80GB). I have made no recent
downloads of any large applications or other files but suddenly my HD
is almost full (147GB). My remote back up disk which has done a full
back up followed by daily incremental backups under CCC only shows
70GB used.
I have done the obvious deletions of caches and trash and searched
through the main folders for very large folders with no avail.
Has anyone any thoughts as to what may have suddenly filled my hard
drive and is there an easy way to find large files or folders without
wading through them all?

Re: 10.5.8 Link to Combo Update

2009-08-06 Thread Ronda Brown

Hey Andrew,

My family and friends say Thank goodness there is ONLY ONE of me!

Seriously though, if you are following my advice don't forget to
Repair Permission after you have installed OS X 10.5.8 update
(whether Combo or through Software Update).

The install took about 15mins on my 17 MacBook Pro.
The Repair Permissions took 22 mins.
A very lot of Permissions Differ, so best to do the Repair
Permissions (you should always after an update to the Operating System).

Hello Barry,

Download a copy of 'disk inventory X' - it maps your HDD and shows you
in a visual sense what exactly is taking all of your space. If its
stuff that you don't need/want then you can delete it.

It's a good program to have ... and its free.

Re: Mail Address book

2009-08-06 Thread Daniel Kerr

Apple Mail doesn't have an Address Book as such. When you click Addresses,
you're only getting a glimpse from the actual Address Book.
Anything you want to delete/change/modify, you have to do from the Actual
Address Book.

Open Address Book. (From Applications folder, not from within Mail)
From All, highlight the name you don't want and then hit the delete button.
Similarly to add Groups, it's all done from the real Address Book.
That's it.

Hello Brett,

You can create Smart Groups in Address Book Application.
To create a Smart Group:
1.Choose File New Smart Group.

2.Enter a name for the group, and then specify search criteria.
Use the pop-up menus and entry field to set the criteria. Click the
Add (+) button to specify additional criteria.

3.Select “Highlight group when updated” if you want Address Book to
highlight a Smart Group’s name whenever it automatically adds or
removes a contact.

4.Click OK.

Addresses can come from either of 2 places

Under the Window drop down menu find Previous Recipients

and I think once you find one to delet , click once on it and hit
the Delete key

In Address Book Click once on the name adn Delete

ShareCard for iPhone iPod Touch

2009-08-06 Thread Ronda Brown

Hello WAMUG iPhone iPod Touch users,

If you are like me and need to send your contact details quite often,
you might be interested in this little App ShareCard.

http://www.doseido.com/sharecard
How it works:
Sharecard works by emailing your vCard containing all your contact
information.
Using your vCard, your contact information can easily be imported
directly into their Address Book.

Settings:
Sharecard allow you to define your contact information from the
Address Book and select what you want to export into the vCard file.

You can get it at the AppStore for a limited time for FREE.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hello Barry,

Download a copy of 'disk inventory X' - it maps your HDD and shows
you in a visual sense what exactly is taking all of your space. If
its stuff that you don't need/want then you can delete it.

It's a good program to have ... and its free.

WhatSize is another you can use to see what is using your HD space.

Can anyone confirm that tools such as DI X and Whatsize (both
excellent BTW) report on hidden files? It's my impression that they
only report on the files that the Finder can see under normal use.
Barry's problem may be tied up with with something deeper like a
corrupted Master Directory Block or somesuch.

It would be worth running Disk Warrior or similar disc-level repair
tool, or at the very least doing a file system check:

1. restart the computer, and hold the Command and 's' keys while
booting.
2. At the blinking prompt type fsck -fy (note the space! ) and let
it do its thing. This will fix any underlying directory problems.

3. Type reboot when finished.

Hi Peter,

WhatSize documentation says: Hidden files, cache files, directories
will all show up with their corresponding size. This application is
similar to the ancient NeXTSTEP, DarkForest. Once the measuring of a
folder has ended the user can also view the information by filtering
for particular file sizes or types. The user can also move unwanted
files and folder in the corresponding Trash bin similar to the
Finder's Delete button.

Disk Inventory X does seem to show hidden files also. I understand it
searches invisible directories.

Ronni

2009-08-06 Thread Robert Howells

No doubt using the software shown by Ronni will help

BUT am I missing something here ?

I would have thought that the very first simplest first check would be

double click on drive ( or use finder ) to show the hard drive index

Make sure you have the size column as part of the display
( if not showing go View - view options - check show size )

click on size at the head of the size column so you sort by size
( click size again if you want largest at the top )

and see what you have ! ?

If you can use Target disk mode to another mac
use that mac to run a new download of Leopard Mac OSX 10.5.8 Combo

if it allows you to instal to your G5

Otherwise it is probably an archive and instal from Leopard disk
followed by a new download of Leopard Mac OSX 10.5.8 Combo update

Hi Severin --

installation procedure went fine, giving me the Restart button. When I
pressed this, I just got the background picture with no top menu
(although the dock showed), no response to clicking anything in the
dock. Powering off and on my Intel iMac with the switch at the rear
gave the grey screen and spinning cog you describe.

-- I eventually got back on air by pulling out the power cord and
replacing. I don't know why I had the problem, it may be connected
with yours, maybe the same treatment may help?

the version 2 version to the version 3 version and it seems that every trace
of the version 2 preferences and what-have-you were automatically removed.
Fortunately I have a SuperDuper back-up and a Time Machine backup, but
before I attempt use either to recover bookmarks and passwords, are there
any traps for the unwary, the trusting, or the just plain foolish, Mac user?

Re: Hard disk suddenly full

Doesn't show the hidden files, hence why you need WhatSize (which is
great).

I'd put money on it being a log file in /var/log/asl

No doubt using the software shown by Ronni will help

BUT am I missing something here ?

I would have thought that the very first simplest first check would be

double click on drive ( or use finder ) to show the hard drive index

Make sure you have the size column as part of the display
( if not showing go View - view options - check show size )

click on size at the head of the size column so you sort by size
( click size again if you want largest at the top )

and see what you have ! ?

For the last few months the available space on my HD has remained

suddenly my HD is almost full (147GB). My remote back up disk
which has done a full back up followed by daily incremental
backups under CCC only shows 70GB used.
I have done the obvious deletions of caches and trash and
searched through the main folders for very large folders with no
avail.
Has anyone any thoughts as to what may have suddenly filled my
hard drive and is there an easy way to find large files or
folders without wading through them all?

Hello Barry,

Download a copy of 'disk inventory X' - it maps your HDD and shows
you in a visual sense what exactly is taking all of your space. If
its stuff that you don't need/want then you can delete it.

It's a good program to have ... and its free.

WhatSize is another you can use to see what is using your HD space.
