Re: 26 sleeps rumour

2009-12-31 Thread Brett Carboni

If it's the same size as my MP2000 Newton (or better still the MP130)
then I'm buying one. Small enough to toke around, big enough to see
without the eye strain of an iPhone.

My Newton was one of the handiest devices I owned.

Re: Change of email address bulk mail out

2009-12-29 Thread Brett Carboni

Thanks for that Ronni. Mail.app in Leopard is what we are using.

I was hoping to somehow access the database that Mail.app uses. I
thought there might be an app that does this (since virus programs
seem to do it all the time :-)

But thanks anyway,

Hi Brett,

Are you using Apple Mail & Address Book in Leopard or Snow Leopard?
If so:

You do need to put the individual addresses in Address Book. However
you don't have to go through all the fields.

I presume you have emails from these people in Mail. If so, you can
select an email from each recipient, right-click/control-click (on
the person's name/email address) to add the email address & name to
AB. When you have done this for each create a group in AB and drag
each name to it. You can then send the email to the group.

---
If you are using Mail & Address Book in OSX10.4, 10.5, 10.6 you can
send Group Mail.

1. Basically you first make a "Group" in Address Book.
2. Place who you wish to notify into the Group.
3. Then drag the group name from the Address Panel to an address
field, or type the first few letters of the group's name and let
automatic address completion do the rest.

To ensure that recipients see neither each other's addresses nor a
bogus "To" address, enter the group name in the Bcc field instead of
To or Cc.
The "To" field in the message each recipient gets will say
"undisclosed-recipients":

If you want all the recipients to see each other's addresses, click
the group name in the address field and choose Expand Group from the
pop-up menu.
(To turn on automatic group expansion for all new messages, on the
Composing preference pane, select the checkbox labelled When Sending
to a Group, Show All Member Addresses.)

Netiquette: When sending email to a group of people, use Bcc (or
turn off automatic group expansion) to keep addresses private and
minimise scrolling for the recipients.

Ronni

Re: Telstra Cable

2009-11-09 Thread Brett Carboni

I've been on Telstra Cable for around 10 years. I don't have any tech
problems any more. Downloads can be pretty fast but uploads are slow
which is bad if you Skype videoconference.

The major problem is the cap. 12 Gb doesn't allow much and I see deals
advertised everywhere even on the backs of buses with ISP's with more.

I would change for those two reasons. But an advantage is that it
doesn't require a phone line which I don't need.

Open Address Book. (From Applications folder, not from within Mail)

Similarly to add Groups, it's all done from the "real" Address Book.

Under the Window drop down menu find Previous Recipients

and I think once you find one to delet , click once on it and hit
the Delete key

In Address Book Click once on the name adn " Delete

Super Duper.

Running it now. Shareware version backs up everything and paid

Couple of hours to initially back up my internal 200Gb drive, after

The question : Is the performance hit with the 4500rpm 200Gb drive

I've got a 160Gb in my old 17" but half my ram died at the same time

Re: Old Drivers for New Printers / ramifications of bootcamp

2006-07-14 Thread Brett Carboni
I'm afraid the writing has been well and truly on the wall
regarding Classic apps for several years, and this current trend
with Canon to drop their Mac OS 9 drivers is just another sign that
the time to move on is becoming pressing.

As an example, an Australian software company, Jamsoft, have just
binned two years' worth of Mac OS X code for their medical billing
software, and now recommend that to get the beat out of their
latest versions you should use an Intel Mac running Bootcamp or
Parallels Desktop witn Windows XP, or to wait until they finish
their Java version, which will run under Mac OS X natively, of
course. While they still do provide a Mac OS 9 version, it is
becoming a shadow of the Windows version in terms of features.

Is this a good or a bad thing? I think it's a bit of both, but I do
think it's a strategy that a lot of smaller companies will adopt in
future.

I would venture that not only will Classic disappear but 'marginal'
Mac apps like MYOB etc will probably only come out in Windows
versions with the Vendors saying "Just run it with boot camp". Where
it will stop, I don't know.

I'm thinking that way myself because I've struggled for years with my
part-time 'Mrs Doubtfire' book-keeper saying 'it doesn't work like
that in Windows' and asking me to do most rudimentary Finder
operations. It would be easy to swap to MYOB Windows and leave her a
Windows booted machine for when she comes in.

Re: Using SuperDuper to Backup to Firewire Drive

2006-04-06 Thread Brett Carboni

I use Super Duper with an external FW drive.

I have bought FW800/400 combo drives but I don't think the speed
difference is worth it unless you are working with video in which
case there are better options nowadays.

I bought Super Duper (well worth the price) and it enables me to use
smart backup which only changes the changed files and lets me backup
an 80Gb external via FW400 in about 12-19 minutes. In that way it's
easy to do daily backups. Buy a 250Gb drive and partition it into an
80Gb backup partition and use the rest to store stuff.

The drives can fail (don't buy 'hard box') but you'd have to be very
unlucky to have both h/disks fail from normal means at the same time.
That said, I have 4 externals. For the extra price for a FW800/400
combo drive put it towards getting an extra cheaper drive. 7200rpm is
good.

Telstra Wireless is a pain in the butt. Nobody I've heard of with a

had any success getting it set up. If you must use Telstra Cable
just get

the standard Cable Modem Telstra supplies. They sent me a new Motorola
SB5101l-AU Surfboard Cable Modem a few weeks ago in preparation for
their
speed boosts as of March to 17MB/sec down 256K/sec up speeds. Use a
3rd
party Wireless/Router such as a Netgear WG614 or similar that can
handle
wired or wireless clients. It will work out cheaper and be far
superior.

If you can get other options other than Telstra consider that also
especially if you can get ADSL2+. Telstra is extremely Mac
unfriendly and

just about every ISP provides more value for your money.

I haven't had success with the self install yet. I got the SB5101l-AU
Surfboard Cable Modem yesterday but it won't work with the Linksys
Wireless G router that I was using before.

Re support, when I got through I was passed to someone who then
passed me to someone who was a Mac 'specialist' but they won't help
you if you have a '3rd party' wireless router.

So darned if you do and darned if you don't.

BTW, she *did* get me running after a while with a direct ethernet
connection but, hey, everything was working fine until they sent me
the new cable modem. And I'm kinda used to wireless now. And she was
polite :-)

They're not cheap. For the same money ($60/mth) my restaurant manager
is getting 12Mbit speeds and a 20Gb download limit (Telstra - 10Gb)
with Amnet.

Looks like it could be time to switch, although maybe my wireless
router needs to be magically reconfigured to talk to this new modem.
Who knows? I'm considering Highway1 and Westnet who have good
reputations.

Turns out that this week Dell are selling 20" LCDs for $899 and 24"

The web site is a bit misleading - under the 24" it says "from

Rumour has it they are bringing out a 30" next, probably with the

Umm... It's not the laws per se, it's how much content the

Steve's vision for Apple in the future may be to be an opposition to

That way his share of OS sales will go from 3% to perhaps 48%, a
1600% increase. Imagine being on-line buying a Dell and clicking a

question I would have is "can it be pirated?" And I'm sure there

What is Microsoft's traditional revenues compared to Apple's? Maybe

Mac OSX running on Intel processors?

Bring it on I say. I think there is a greater chance this time of it
happening.

We now have USB, standard hard drives, and can use standard monitors
and printers. Why not a standard processor? The Intel processors
always seem to be as fast (they have much more money to spend on R&D
because of the volume they sell) and maybe we could get something
fast in the next 17" Powerbook - they G5 looks like never making it.

It's all about the software & UI anyway and Apple could IMHO make
more money just selling OS and App software like Microsoft does,
although it would be a real trick to stop people pirating it and
putting it on their Tang or Wang :-)

In essence, I like my make because of the way it works and looks on
the screen - not because it looks cool on the desk (although it *is*

I can say that it scores 3 out of 3 regarding your requirements. But it
fails most people's 4th, that being price. A bit too pricey (I managed to do
a special deal). Other than that, it's a great phone. The reception is way
better than the P800. Opens pdf's and spreadsheets quite well. The camera
is, well, OK. Good for taking rough pics of equipment at auctions to show
the chef before you start bidding on it the next day, or how the new
cheeseboard looks as a guide to staff, but not much good for anything else.

It doesn't look very cool unless you're the type that's impressed by the
sunglasses they sell in Memphis.

The flip down keyboard is a joke but the HW recognition is OK although not
as good as Newton ‹ nothing is yet (had to put that in :-).

But the main thing is that it works perfectly in 10.4 (downloads a little
program to the phone initially), and you'll be able to easily sync

I have a friend who needs to convert his collection to run on his soon to be
purchased iPod Micro random wrigleys chewing-gum thingo.

Spam free free Email service/OT?

2005-03-19 Thread Brett Carboni
A while ago there was a discussion on free spam free email services, and
'MyRealbox.com' was mentioned (I think by Onno). It's a semi-testing site
run by Novell.

A few people would have liked to use it but it has been closed to new
members for some time (years?).

Just to let all know that it's open again. I've been using it for years.
It's handy, never let me down, and there's no spam.

It's a pity Apple's doesn't dp voice recording or radio like the ripoff.
That would be handy.

Specific Web Page inability to access

2005-02-26 Thread Brett Carboni
I've been trying to access a specific web page ( http://www.philbaker.net/ )
and everyone seems to be able to get it but me. Even contacted the webmaster
but am assured it is working.

Is this a conspiracy or is my Mac sick or both?

Using 17" Powerbook connected with Telstra Bigpond Cable running 10.3.8.

Tried Safari, Explorer and Firefox. I can get everything else, and my
friends can get this site ( i.e. you don't need to check it).

Also does anyone have a TiBook 15" 667MHz for sale. Condition not important
except the screen. (Broke a friends screen last night - arghhh - just moved
it one inch backwoods).

Don't they have things you can plug into on planes today?

Actually that's a good question. Is there an airline that lets you plug in
your laptop to some type of power outlet so you can keep working on a very
long flight? I heard a while ago that one airline did, but it may have been
business class.

Bungie Marahon

2005-02-11 Thread Brett Carboni
For those who remember Marathon, they have released all 3 as freeware.

You can get them here

Now we don't have to buy the action sacks Shay ;-)

Now if we can only get Bungie to release Halo 2 for Macs. Wish they weren't
owned by Microsoft.

More amazingly, on page 6 of today's West Australian!

All someone needs to do is get a battery pack that sits under the unit and,
with a slate-like LCD display, it will make a nice powerbook alternative.

Or at least handy to use the LCD screen as a 'sheet music' viewer on the
piano at Tsunami.

I'm interested in buying a new monitor. How does the new monitor pricing

I have one and yes, there seems to be a problem with iPods handling 12,000+
songs.

I initially synced it to 'mirror' all my songs but it choked on all that so
now I set up (a lot of) smart playlists and get it to sync with them. That's
the best fix at present. The iPod still may splutter a bit with a big
playlist.

Also making a smart playlist of all songs with a 4 or 5 star rating will
hopefully get the majority of your songs on.

A bit sad though because I wanted it to carry all my songs but I think it
can't handle it. Perhaps a future software update will fix it but I have a
bad feeling it's the internal processor of the iPod being overwhelmed. Hope
I'm wrong.

Also when you have 12,000+ songs it really really needs an input device like
a pen or keyboard to find them. Like a Newton . Even with the best MP3
player interface it is too hard to find songs with a big library.

But I can't ever see Apple doing that :-(

Of interest to notebook junkies.

Only, at that price, maybe a TV is good too. Or maybe El Gato's product.

Addressbook sms send by bluetooth

2004-12-02 Thread Brett Carboni
Looking to get a bluetooth phone that will send sms's by typing on the Mac
and sending using the phone. LOTS of people want us to phone them back with
bookings confirmations and we end up playing phone tag or they just don't
turn up. Turning into a lot of work and being able to use templates of
messages would be handy.

Apple's compat list not much good. My P800 is on there but it can't do it.

Don't want to use I/net service because they charge and I have space on my
cap to use up.

Anyone use this feature?
