Seagate Goflex Satellite
Hi All, A couple of weeks back we were working a string on the Seagate Goflex Satellite wi-fi external drive which has been specially developed for iPhone and iPad users (or other tablets... whatever they may be!) who find that up to 64GB is insufficient storage required to meet their needs on the go. As promised this is the follow up now that I have purchased and played. Firstly, I think everyone needs to understand this product is very much a work in progress and I believe as more and more people feedback to Seagate they will further enhance their software to make this product even more user friendly. Simply put for me anyway, it has been a great addition albeit a little frustrating as with all new devices to get to understand how to get the best out of the machine. The fact it works is great and you can store up to 480GB of information in audio, video, picture/photo and most document formats and then have this ready and waiting to be either downloaded or streamed to your weapon of choice in a few seconds or minutes depending on size of the file is great (for me it also provides the added bonus of a security back up in addition to my other external hard drive). The fact that it only uploads in set formats and you cannot upload things like playlists from iTunes or folders from iPhoto in their format, is a bit of a pain as you have to then rework the folders... time consuming and lots of duplication of effort. The app that accompanies the drive (download from iTunes) is also a work in progress and I think following a long list of complaints already the upgrades that have been made have helped but it is still prone to annoying error messages from time to time. All in all I am pleased with the investment. The best deal I managed at the time was from Officeworks, $199 plus free delivery. For those of you seriously needing to carry lots of extra info/date, music/video files I would say this is the best tool on the market I have found so far and hopefully will improve further and become even more user friendly. Re: iMessage Problem
Thanks Ronni I finally cracked it... and as usual it was because I hadn't followed instructions to the letter!! I have 3 Airport Expresses. the 2 old ones that I use for speakers and printer which are the old flavour and can only be tasked on Airport Utility 5.6. The Airport Extreme Base Station and also the recently purchased Airport express which I use to extend my network are of course 5ghz for some reason my iPad had decided to attach itself to the old Airport Express? Why? Anyway I went back and reset both of the old AE's and voila... all good! But it took 3 hours!! Thanks again as always for your invaluable help. David On 03/04/2012, at 4:07 PM, Ronda Brown wrote: Hi David, I won’t be back on WAMUG Mailing list tonight, I now have Clients work to finish. If your Airport Extreme and Airport Express are both 802.11N you would setup a 'Simultaneous dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi base station’ On the Extreme you would “Create a Wireless Network” “Allow this Network to be Extended”. On the Airport Express to “Extend a Wireless Network”. Some Wi-Fi devices use the 2.4GHz wireless band, including iPhone, iPod touch, and devices using 802.11b/g. Other devices can use the higher-speed 5GHz band, such as the latest 802.11n-based Mac computers and Apple TV iPad. Instead of choosing one of the bands, AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule, Airport Express 802.11n now operates simultaneously on both bands, and your multi-band devices automatically use the best available band. This means all your Wi-Fi devices get the fastest possible wireless performance and the best possible range. If you need more help setting up a Airport Extreme N Dual-Band Base Station Network , I did a Tutorial some time back which you can download at ronnibrown.net the page is: http://ronnibrown.net/Airport_Extreme_N_Dual-Band_Wi-Fi_Network.html I possibly will be around WAMUG Mailing list sometime tomorrow. But, if you feel wanderlust for new unexplored software -- a whim that I quite understand... There are some very good iPad and iPhone apps: in fact WeatherZone itself is popular. Or there is Pocket Weather Au HD which I use most every day. It, like WeatherZone, gets its information from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. For the Mac I use the standard weather widget in Dashboard which can be configured to point to Perth. I usually run multiple copies, one for each of the cities that I follow (at the moment Toronto, Melbourne, and Chiang Mai). There are also some offerings in the Mac App Store that I have not tried. Just bring up the App Store application on your Mac and search on weather. You'll see Weather Dock, Weather+, a free WeatherEye, and Weather HD among other. Of course unlike WeatherZone or Pocket Weather AU, these apps may not get their data from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. Re: IPhoto
Hi Ronni, Thanks for this... great update for us. Interestingly I have found out why I did not receive the software update advice as normal. I purchased iPhoto Version 9.0 through the Mac Apps store. so when I downloaded the update from Apple Support the package would not load and the message came in The version of iPhoto installed on this Mac must be updated through the Mac App Store. Check the Mac App Store to see if an update is available. So... I reckon this means if you have purchased any Apps through the Apps Store you will not receive the message through the normal Software Update service as before but have to check on Apps Store Updates. The first version iPhoto was released in January of 2002. The first two versions of iPhoto, versions 1 and 2, were offered for free, and were available as individual downloads. Starting with the next version, Apple started bundling iPhoto with their new iLife suite, which also included other applications such as iMovie and iDVD. That release was called iLife ’04, since it was released in January of 2004. However, since iPhoto was only at version 2, they decided to skip a version number, so the version of iPhoto that came with iLife ’04 was iPhoto 4.0. There was never any such thing as iPhoto 3. Apple continued this naming scheme in 2005 and 2006, releasing iLife ’05 and iLife ’06 at the Macworld show in January, which included iPhoto 5.0 and iPhoto 6.0, respectively. However, in 2007, iLife was not ready in time for the usual January release, and was instead released in September of 2007. Since the year was already nearly over by the time they were able to release it, Apple decided to name this release iLife ’08. Unlike in 2004, they did not skip a version number with iPhoto, so iLife ’08 actually included iPhoto version 7.0. This version of iPhoto can be referred to as either iPhoto ’08 or iPhoto 7, depending on where you look. The next release of iLife was in January 2009. The bundle was named iLife ’09, and again, the actual version number of iPhoto only advanced by one, so iPhoto ’09 is actually iPhoto version 8.0. The next release was iPhoto ’11, which came out in October of 2010, and contained iPhoto version 9.0. In order for the store to locate the applications, the Spotlight index needs to be working properly. As a result, one approach to fixing the problem is to force a rebuild of the system's Spotlight index. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Go to the Spotlight system preferences. 2. Go to the Privacy tab. 3. Add your boot drive (Macintosh HD) to the privacy list and close the preferences. 4. Open the preferences again and remove your hard drive from the list. 5. Reboot the system. With the system freshly restarted, wait for the spotlight index to rebuild (the spotlight menu will have a pulsing dot in it while this is happening). Once Spotlight has fully indexed the drive, open the Mac App Store again and try updating your applications again, and if that was the problem then the updates should appear properly. Hi Stephen, Yep all true I am afraid. Mine crashed and burned 4 weeks ago. Out of warranty of course18 months old. Never had a problem with it then suddenly it just burnt out. Many people seem to be having a similar problem with the earlier models the claim is that there was not sufficient air space inside the unit and the constant overheating eventually meant the power function literally did burn out. Not sure if this has been corrected now? I opted for a new iOmega 1TB EGO BLACKBELT PORT HD FW8/U3 f/MAC - which came highly recommended from one of the reviews on a USA website so far so good, and I love the fact it literally can go in your pocket and take with you.. and then for wireless went back to buying an Apple Extreme Base Station which for some reason seems to be giving me a better coverage area than I had with the Time Capsule? Re: ISP's
Thanks Paul, That's cheered me up no end!! I live in Dunsborough and we are currently with Westnet and get max speed of 425 KB/s, most of the time because we are 3km from the nearest exchange we run at only 250 KB/s. takes 35 to 45 minutes minimum to download one episode of House! But it is the best service around here... or so I am told. Customer service with Westnet is the best I have experienced with any provider bar none. Download Managers
After all the recent mails on ISP's and speeds, I decided to phone Westnet Support one more time to see what could be done to help us poor folk out in the sticks. It seems there is little on offer. Where we are situated there is no ADSL2 available but they were helpful in downgrading my plan as I was actually paying for a speed that I could not attain... a saving of $20 per month thank you Westnet. During the course of the conversation the guy at Westnet did suggest I look at a Download Manager to assist with the speed, quoting that he had used one and improved speed by up to 20%. Does anyone have any experience of using a download manager or can make a recommendation? I have looked in the archives and could find nothing there and then Googled as usual and was hit with a myriad of offers. Any input on this would be much appreciated. Hi Chris, I also live just outside Dunsborough. My wife was seduced by a telesales company working on behalf of Telstra last year and signed up, having spent the previous 2 years very happy with Westnet. Within a week we regretted the decision and then had a real fight on our hands to get out of the deal/contract despite the prescribed cooling off period. Too many problems to note but essentially we have found Westnet to offer the best service at the most competitive price thus far. The problem in Dunsborough on speed related issues is the exchange and the distance you maybe from that exchange. We are over 2kms away and this without a doubt has meant we get issues at times with download speed. However, we are under the impression that Telstra acknowledge the issue and that an upgrade to the exchange is imminent whatever that may mean. Email Address at Apple?
G'day All, I am wondering if anyone has an email address of someone senior in Apple management who I can write to directly either here in Australia or maybe in California? My beef is that I have an iMac G5 which has developed a known hardware fault ( -110) which requires the logic board to be replaced (cost to replace is $1,000 + labour). Apple extended it's warranty to three years to cover this known issue, but I fall outside of that by a matter of months. The argument I am making is that as I travel away from home 3 to 6 months each year the machine has not had normal use over the past 4 years and therefore the fault has not manifested itself until after the 3 year warranty has expired. I had two very nice conversations with Susan Kells who is a Senior Customer Service Agent for Apple in Australia (by the way, her service manner was excellent), who admits there is a fault with the logic board but the best they can offer as my machine is outside the extended warranty period, is a $125 E-voucher against the purchase of a new machine. I feel that is a little miserly?! Any advice or contact details that can be provided so I can plead my case to a more senior management agent/representative at Apple would be much appreciated. Re: Airtunes hardware?
Hi Paul, I use an Airport Express unit plugged into an electrical socket in my lounge then connected wirelessly to my iMac G5 and by an audio lead into my stereo system. All you have to do is plug an AirPort Express into an electrical outlet near those speakers, then connect them with an audio cable. Re: Time Capsule Time machine
Thanks Neil for the input. I have in fact been turning it off and on but wanted it automated as with age forgetfulness does reign!! Hopefully the info from Mark will do the trick. Still not sure though why the download speed is slower via Time Capsule? Thanks again, David On 07/10/2008, at 11:07 AM, Neil Houghton wrote: Hi David, Not an answer, per se, to your problem - but what I do is have Time machine set-up then switch it off. Then when I think it is time to do a back-up (usually once a day but sometimes an extra one or two if I'm busy!) I just turn on Time machine, do back-up now and then turn it off again. Of course, this does defeat the set forget advantage of Time machine and relies on you actually remembering to back-up - but this is not something I have a problem with and the Time Machine menu bar item makes it really quick to Open Time Machine Preferences, turn it on, Back Up Now and then turn it off. I have a couple of reasons for doing this: - Like you I think that the default hourly back-up is too frequent. - My external disks are fairly quiet but my iMacs are really quiet and I still find the disk noise distracting - so I tend to leave them switched off and just switch them on for my (manual) back-up. Since you are using a Time Capsule, I assume that your backup disk is always mounted - so if there is not an easy solution to actually schedule The Time Machine back-ups, I wonder if there is a way to automate the switch on, back-up, switch-off approach that I describe? I haven't done much with Applescript or automator so I'm not sure of the scriptability of all these actions but others may be able to advise whether there is a way to automate/script this? Re: Update 10.5.2
Just to update you all on this post: Thanks to Ronni again for her input - in the end the machine went to the local technician in Busselton. It appears that I was one of the select few who experienced this problem with the screen freezing after resetting once the update 10.5.2 had completed download. Nobody appears to know why?! It has something to do with the keychains failing to initialize and the machine can only be re-booted from the Leopard disc after a series of other surgical changes have been made to the operating system. Far more common apparently has been problems with graphics on certain machines after the update. Have a good weekend. Re: Update 10.5.2
OK Peter, managed to get the disc to eject. Have now tried to reboot with Leopard DVD but as yet no success. Thanks also to Lloyd - have followed info u sent but again at this stage no success as yet - going to keep trying, just maybe something will spark life into this machine! I have now realised that there already is an iPod Touch DVD in the slot and I cannot release/eject this disc as my wireless keyboard is not connected to the machine?! I have now tried removing all cables and turning off the power at the wall and then relaunching with the power button depressed as I plug back into the mains socket(as proposed on the Apple support site) but still to no avail! This is not looking too good! David How about if you hold down the Mouse button at startup? Startup Disk Full
Hi All, My iMac G5 with 150GB hard disk has produced a warning this morning that the startup disk is nearly full. I have run Whatsize on my HD and it confirms this but in the detail it only shows a total of 70Gb being used where has the other 80GB gone and how can I find out? Thanks, David -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Startup Disk Full
My Apologies.. I have found that my Maxtor external hard disk had created duplicate volumes on my iMac HD and therefore used up all the HD space. Phew. D. iLife 08 - HD Full
Hi All, I have this week installed iLife 08. I am not sure why but suddenly the disk space on my HD has become fully utilised?! I suspect it has something to do with iPhoto as when I check the iPhoto Library on my HD it says I have used 52GB but on the iPhoto screen when I check the library it says only 17.2 GB. I think therefore I have maybe 2 extra back ups that have been performed but no matter where I search I cannot find the folders/files. Can anyone please advise as to how I can easily look at the size of all files/folders to identify where the space on my HD has been utilised and how I can delete and get space back. I am using an iMac G5 with 150GB HD and 1.25GB DDR SDRAM on Version 10.4.10. Thanks in advance. Strange!
Hi all, My Powerbook G4 has suddenly decided not to let me access any files on my desktop or any applications by clicking on them in situ, unless I drop said files or application into my dock. Can someone tell me how I get back to normal please. Doing it while booted from the Install Disk would be good, if practical. Good Luck Paul Hi David, If you click once on the folder/icon to highlight it, then hit Command + O, do they open/launch. Check System Preferences under Keyboard Mouse and check your double-click settings. iTunes
G'day All, I am wondering if or how can I order from the US iTunes site? I am registered here in OZ with iTunes and when I try to order on the US site it says I can only order in Australia with my current email address. Is it as simple as opening a new email address? Any help/ direction will be much appreciated. Just for clarification, the products I want to order on the US iTunes site are not currently available in Australia. Thanks, David
Skype Connection
I have taken delivery today of a Netcomm V85 VoIP desktop phone. I have downloaded Skype but I am having problems connecting despite following the Quick Start Guide from Netcomm to the letter. Anyone have experience here? After completing the instructions the LCD display on the phone still says : SIP (Proxy OFF). When turning the proxy on by clicking the box I am asked for the IP Address or domain name address of the proxy server where do I get this from? Thanks in advance, David
Start Up
Hi all, I need help. I received a warning note today to say that my start up disk was full on my Powerbook G4. I checked disk utility and sure enough is says that the hard disk is all but full by 150mb?! I don't know how this can be as I have nowhere near the number of files that it says I now have. I have had some problems with iPHTO duplicating files and thumbnails and think this may have something to do with it but how do I check? I do not want to restart by using the Powerbook G4 install disc as suggested in case I lose all my treasured files. Also to add to my woes, following the software update I performed yesterday on my iMAc G5 to 10.4.7 all my personal settings disappeared!! All folders in iTUNES and iPHOTO also went and when I opened Mail it was back to start up? I don't know what happened after the download and restart but it seems to have reset everything and yet my files in my personal folders are all still intact. Any suggestions as to how I can retrieve my original settings or do I have to save all my folders all over again? Thanks in advance, David
