Adieu
I would like to say adieu to you good folks as 30 Jun is just about here. I have not contributed a great deal to this group partly because by the time I have got around to reading any email which I could have answered someone else has answered the question, most often of course the indefatigable and amazing Ronni. That in no way dimishes the effort put in by many others to contribute to the group. The other reason for the paucity of my contribution is that I see myself as a minnow in the Mac geekdom. As an Age pensioner I have to ration my memberships to social organisations and while the membership fee may be 'only' a small amount to you still working, I need to be careful. I am the List Admin and Moderator of the ACT Apple Help Email List which keeps me busy in observing the Mac webosphere. And as a paid up member of this august group, that cuts out my 'hobby' fees. I lived in Canberra for many years but now live in Albury. We do not require paid membership of our MUG to join our email Help List. Merely being a Mac enthusiast is sufficient. That said we don't have many non-Group members in the List and if any of you sought to send your electrons eastward we would make you welcome. The warning is that our List is nowhere as active or cerebral as yours. Athough we do publish a monthly Newsletter (for financial members). Best wishes, see you in the Mac cloud. Thank you for the camaraderie. Re: FRITZ!Box routers - sounds good??
Neil I also have had Internode as ISP and VOIP for several years and quite content. I bought the Fritz 7390 and two Ftritz phones from Internode when these were first released by Internode for sale about 12 months ago. Mine have been working satisfactorily for most of that time except for a few minor hiccups which I am prepared to explain. I suggest you first do some serious background reading in the Whirlpool forums: <http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/?action=threads_search&q=fritz&f=68&fg=-1> <http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1691529> <http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1846249> <http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1803653> <http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1704707> Those references are a bit mixed up/out of order I'm afraid. One of those threads runs to 6 parts although the last 2 or 3 are more important. One thread discusses the rental deal of which you speak and the financial values. One, 2 parts, discusses the issues users have with the Fritz. All is not and has not been smooth sailing. That said, I stress I am quite content with mine. The Fritz has generated quite a bit of spirited discussion on Whirlpool since its release, and unlike a lot of Whirlpool stuff there are serious posts aplenty. Now, I have no wish to bore the pants off the kind folk on this list with my commentary on the Fritz saga so I am quite happy to send you a more cohesive comment off list if you wish. Re: iphone 4s
Hugh All the international airports [Aust I mean] operate the same. You are able to have in your possession [purchase] and use the iPhone for 30 days prior to departure, so it can be either unopened in original box or opened. You need the original receipt showing GST. They will check the serial number. The Customs officer will refund you the GST on the spot, actually by credit card deposit or you may choose a cheque to be sent to you/paid into your bank. But instead of the 10 per cent GST you will receive only 9 per cent because Customs retains one per cent. But you do need to have the phone in your hand. I went through this last year en route from Sydney to Singapore. No problems. There is a special office in the departure area, after customs/immigration, I think it is called Tax Refund or something. But there will be good web site maps of Perth departure areas. I don't know if there is an Apple shop in the duty free area [you can check] but if so that may be your easiest way but I would ring them first to ensure they have an iPhone 4S available, the reports of stock shortage. If you buy from the Apple store on line their receipt will clearly show a GST amount whereas if you just buy from any downtown shop they may not provide a fully itemised receipt unless you make it clear why you want one. I had my iPhone 4 already loaded with apps etc when I departed and was lucky enough to deal with a Customs officer who also was an iPhone aficionado and we had a nice discussion. I might add I also once worked for Customs so we that made it easier. The Customs website also has detailed instructions. HTH ... Lion Clean Install-advice please
I would much appreciate some advice on my proposal to clean install Lion. I have not done an upgrade by clean install since so long ago I forget how to. I shall have adequate safety precautions: (1) I have had Time Machine daily backup on an external HDD for quite some time; (2) I have a daily SuperDuper clone on another external HDD, (3) and before I commence upgrading I shall do another clone [of some type] on another external HDD, this latter one to be the source for data to be transferred to the new Lion OS on my iMac internal HDD by FW. My iMac meets the requirements for Lion and I am running 10.6.8. I am aware that I can install Lion over my current iMac HDD 10.6.8. But I am considering taking the opportunity to leave behind the bits and pieces which have undoubtedly littered the current OS. All my drives have plenty of space. First step, I have read how to download Lion and make a DVD of Lion to be used for install purpose. So I shall do this. Option 1. Wipe the iMac HDD, reinstall 10.6 from the SL Install DVD, combo update to 10.6.8 (I have retained the pkg of this update), then install Lion (from my homemade Lion DVD) over that 10.6.8. That should give me a pristine Lion. Is that so? Option 2. Wipe the iMac HDD, then install Lion (from my homemade DVD) directly onto my iMac HDD. That will give me a pristine Lion. Is that so? Now I am unsure whether I can just do Option 2. I think I have read among the gazillion web pages on Lion that such procedure is possible. Is that correct? Obviously if so, there is no need to go the Option 1 route. Sorry if that all sounds convoluted but I am unsure of the best way to proceed. Next, having installed a pristine Lion on my iMac HDD, I now need to transfer various data from one of my 10.6.8 clones. And this is where my senior moments collide. Naturally I will have the Apple Lion software in place. If I use Migration Assistant to transfer the obvious data how do I get my other third-party applications into Lion. Can I just drag-drop each application from the 10.6.8 clone to Lion and if so will the application create its own prefs first time I start it up? I do have the necessary relevant serial numbers. I have not purchased any apps from the Mac App Store. I have not used Migration Assistant previously. So, for instance, does it transfer all my emails and preferences [I use Apple's Mail.app] from the 10.6.8 clone to Lion's Mail.app? Or is it better to not use Migration Assistant at all and just transfer by drag-drop any data, applications, etc as I find I need them. I guess I am not alone here in saying that I have over a long time downloaded many applications on a 'May come in handy one day' basis and have never used and forgotten them. So after a period of time if I have not transferred items to Lion I will feel comfortable in eliminating them. I would be grateful for any pointers on how to proceed. There seems to be any number of web pages on upgrading but none that I have found give the kind of Dummies level manual I am looking for. Perhaps someone here knows where I can look. I agree with Matt. I have been using Clicktoflash for a long while now and it works great. But it does not stop all image based advertising because a lot of advertisers now place their advertisements within the web page and don't use Flash. I don't know how this is done. I bet there is an army of geeks working on how to defeat Clicktoflash on behalf of the advertising industry or even within Adobe. But for now +1 for Clicktoflash. Personal Archive Format
I followed the recent thread on Retention of records with much interest as I am about to embark on my own project of creating a personal archive of documents [land title, birth certificates, etc] and family photographs. I have a 250 gb USB 2 external HD to use for this project with my iMac 24in C2D 3.06 ghz 10.6.2. The USB HD is new and is still formatted for Windows. I know I can easily format the HD for my Mac. This is what I propose: Divide the HD in two and format one partition to HFS+ Journaled so I can use it to store/retrieve/fiddle with short term current use stuff [iTunes music, photos, docs] from the iMac. Format the second partition so it can be read by Windows machines as well as Apple machines in the future if access is needed. In respect of the 'future' I am not talking more than 10-20 years, I am nearly 70 so this project is only a backstop if needed. I do not see any need for Windows access to this partition any time in my lifetime. And I realise that noone can foretell what formats/systems will be around in that future time frame but one just has to future-proof as best as one can. Am I correct in thinking I need to format the second partition to FAT 32? This format will permit me to read and write to the partition from my iMac? And at some later time if need be a Windows machine will be able to read files on that partition? If this thinking is wrong, what would be the best way to store the archive files on that second partition? Format that partition also as HFS+ Journaled, scan all the photos and documents in png format and transfer to that partition? Can Windows machines read png format? [I assume they can if that is the format being used by the National Archives.] But if I have not formatted the partition as FAT 32 can a Windows machine even access the partition [formatted for Mac] to see the png files? I have never burned a DVD, only audio CDs. So as a precaution I propose to burn the important documents and photos to DVDs to retain elsewhere. Can I burn these files as png format? Excuse me for a long post but I have tried to explain myself clearly! Would appreciate any advice. ..... Re: Problems installing ringtones
Rod I had a similar problem some time ago altho they were not purchased ringtones, I made them. I THINK this is what you have to do: double click on each ringtone and it should then appear in the ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Ringtones folder as a quaver couplet inside a dark square icon. I think you need to quit iTunes if it is still open, wait a few minutes and open iTunes and the new ringtones should appear in the Ringtones Library. I just last week bought one of these altho model ATT022U to begin processing my collection of LP records 33 [remember those] to my iMac to burn CD. Some of my collection is over 50 years old [I'm nearly 70]. I convinced my wife the purchase of $230 was worth it because I was going to digitally remaster the records!! You transfer the music direct to your computer by USB. I am assuming your model is much the same as mine. I have so far only done a test transfer of one record. The software you will be provided with is Audacity which I think is rather good but you should download the latest version as the one provided will probably be quite old. That app is all you will need I think. It is a bit tricky setting up but once you do all is good. You can export the download music from your records to iTunes and then burn or play. The software help is quite good. I presume there are other apps and no doubt someone will say so but I don't know of any. Re: iPhone Help
To return to the original questions, my understanding is that nobody can purchase an iPhone by itself, locked or unlocked, in Australia. I think you can only buy an iPhone on a contract for phone + data/call usage. Of course the contracts vary enormously in complexity, deliberately so, and you need to look at several to determine the best deal. Unlike in the USA where I think it is only AT&T which has the initial sale+contract deal, here just about all mobile phone carrier companies sell the iPhone as part of a contract. The major carriers are: <http://www.vodafone.com/index.AU.html> <http://www.virginmobile.com.au/> <http://www.optus.com.au/home/index.html> <http://www.telstra.com.au/> There many others and I am certain other members of this group will be able to contribute names and recommendations. A most important factor is the degree of phone coverage for the Pilbara by the various carriers. Telstra has the best coverage in Australia but I do not know of the others coverage. Their web sites should show. None of the iPhones you obtain by contract are provided unlocked. You either have to pay the carrier to unlock the phone or do it yourself [and there are many helpful folk available to point you in this direction]. An alternative is to obtain an unlocked iPhone in the USA and bring it with you. That way you can join a carrier with a pre-paid connection which is the cheapest phone call system if you do not make many calls. Doing this with a small up front pre-paid amount would allow you to get a start and then you could further explore your requirements and solutions. I followed this route wherein I was given an unlocked iPhone by my son who bought it in Singapore, I brought it home and I simply joined a pre-paid connection with Telstra. Bear in mind that all the companies have specials every so often so you may be lucky. I think at the moment there are some good deals here with iPhone + contract because all the carriers know there is a new model iPhone close to release. If you do bring an iPhone with you, you will need a plug adapter to fit the USA plug into our 3 pin electricity wall outlet but one costs only a few dollars here. Also be aware for your other household appliances that our electricity is 240v. Sorry if that's telling grandma how to suck eggs as you're an electrician but I thought it as well to mention it. I have often been caught out with purchases overseas. Sorry if this is a bit long winded. I am sure members of this group will provide corrections where appropriate. New iPhone
I have been given a used 16gb 3G iPhone by my son who bought and used it in Singapore where he lives. He retained the SIM card for use in his new phone. I have never before looked at iPhone discussions as I had no interest in buying one [still don't, I think they are too expensive for my very moderate phone usage, but hey I got one for free, may as well use it] so I am a complete newbie with this. So my first questions are: 1 Can I insert the SIM card from another [non Apple] phone into this iPhone to see if it works and if so will it be just recognised by the telco as the other non Apple phone and operate as any normal phone. Boy, hope that makes sense. 2 Can I just go to the telco I decide upon with my empty iPhone and purchase a SIM card from them and my iPhone will just work. 3 I have seen the terms "jailbreak" "unlock" etc referring to iPhones but I glossed over them. I gather it means that my iPhone may/would be "locked" onto a particular provider/telco. How do I ascertain if this is so and if so how do I make it work with an Australian telco. See how newbie I am. Any advice appreciated. Music CD catalog app
I am looking for a simple app to catalog my music CDs. I do not play any music on my iMac [24 in/3.06/10.5.6/4gb] as my computer is located in my study where I have a superb stereo music setup so I only play CDs on that. But I do want to be able to make a catalog of all my CDs [so far only about 150] and load all my CDs in an app which will show CD name, each song title, singer, etc. And enable me to search on song title, artist name, CD name. etc. I don't want to load the songs into iTunes as that's a waste of space. I thought I would just be able to import the CD into iTunes and save the CD title, contents, etc in iTunes and then eject the CD/delete the songs but apparently I can't. Is that possible? Any bright ideas out there pse. I have looked at a number of shareware apps on Version Tracker but I have no real opinion on their quality. Thanks .... Re: Email not deleting from server ?
I have noticed this behaviour, different ISP, same Mail.app and same preference settings. If you select any of your mail boxes in the left column, do a Get Info [CMD-i] and you will see an Account window with three tabs. Click on the Messages on Server tab. You can then select residual messages listed there and delete them. I find that a little easier to do than going to my ISP webmail page and deleting messages, you don't have to start up your browser and navigate to the mail page etc. However everyone's MMV. As to why some mail messages get left behind, I don't know. This is not a new phenomenon [ref your new iMac], I have a TiPB 867. I just try to remember to clean the messages out every few months and there are usually only very few, 2 or 3, there to be disposed of so it's not something I worry about. I just checked and I have one message there and it is at least 3 months since I last checked. I receive about 200 emails a week and just about all are automatically removed from the server as per the preferences. However if all your messages are still on the server that is cause for concern. It may be that another mail app will not do this. No doubt someone using another app will be able to tell us if this occurs for them. Re: Your usage has reached 301MB [Reference Number: 070511-004254]
It may be worth checking if all her email [assuming using Apple's Mail.app] has been removed from the server. Control-click on any of the blue mail folders in the folders list [in the left pane] then open 'Get Info', then select 'Messages on Server' which gives you a list of all the messages still resident on the server, then select them all [assuming you don't wish to keep any altho I can't see why anyone would want to] and then delete them. The other suggestion of ensuring messages are deleted from the server as soon as read will prevent such a build up again. I check that Messages on Server every few months or so and always find some messages still there even though they should have been removed. Don't know why this happens. How do I find my sync speed [using a Sipura 3000 ATA]? Thanks On Tue 2 Jan,, at 5:56 PM, Adam Hewitt wrote: Sorry Glenn, I didn't mean to get stuck into you...as it turns out I am a network/systems engineer (well I am a project manager now, but have been an engineer traditionally), so I will try and leave that hat off for the time being :P When I said 20Mbps, what I should have said was that I am on the 24Mbps ADSL2+ Plan, but my ADSL syncs at ~20Mbps. I happen to live about 400mtrs from the exchange and according to the line tests I have ~700mtrs of cable between my modem and the DSLAM (yes, that means ~300mtrs of cable is sitting inside the exchange for some reason :S)...so my sync speeds are really really good. ..... Re: iiNet Changes and Internode
I have not used any of the other ISPs mentioned in the replies except I have been with Internode for several years now. I can enthusiastically recommend them. I am on 1500/512 for 10 GB a month for $60. I also am connected to their Nodephone for VOIP which is a bit more expensive than many/most other VOIP providers but the reliability makes up for that. If you follow the comments at Whirlpool you will see where many of the VOIP providers are having trouble. . Peter Sealy Thurgoona AUSTRALIA

Scanner for slides and photos
I wish to scan and burn to CD my home collection of personal 35mm slides and photos. Any recommendations for a scanner? This is not a highly professional operation, just home use. I have tried to look at the archives but I am unable to find anything at all within the last 18 months. Obviously I am incompetent at using the archives! Using OS X 10.4.7 on a TiPB 867 [which means USB 1.1]. Thanks for any pointers. . Peter Sealy Thurgoona AUSTRALIA
Re: Need help with Terminal
Your friend needs Disk Warrior 303 for 10.4.7. It is a free upgrade from Alsoft's site. I would then run DW and I guess that will fix the problem. ..... Peter Sealy Thurgoona AUSTRALIA
Flash drive
I have purchased a new Sony 512mb Flash USB Drive so I can transport files from my Ti Powerbook 10.4.7 to a PC with Microsoft XP and Word 2003 [I think]. When I open the Flash Drive it shows contents as: Decompression.exe Readme 1.02.02 Virtual Expander_flashdemo 1.02.01(WW).exe VirtualExpander_v102.exe I realise these (except the Readme) are Windows files. My question is, never having using a flash drive before, do I need to format this drive as Mac HFS+ so I can copy my files from my TiPB on to it? If so, should I trash the Windows files? [Actually I guess reformatting the drive to HFS+ will in any case delete the Windows files. How can I transfer any Mac formatted files from the flash drive to the PC? Or do I need to format the drive to the Windows format using Disk Utility? The file on my TiPB I wish to transport is in RTF. Sorry if this not clear enough. This is my first flash drive. . IF NOT , and you have emptied the trash with thumb drive disconnected , you will now need to erase & reformat the Thumb Drive to clear them.. That's a bit like those old floppies [1.44 mb weren't they]. Anyone else remember those? If you did not empty the trash after deleting data from the floppy and before ejecting the floppy, the data remained on the floppy. ..... Peter Sealy Thurgoona AUSTRALIA

Safari speed
I did not wish to hijack the other thread so am starting this one. There have been many threads and solutions [or at least, suggestions] posted on numerous Mac discussion boards and lists for quite a while on the matter of Safari slowdown. It must be said of course that for many users there is no obvious slowdown. These include: fiddling with DNS numbers, emptying Java caches, emptying Safari's caches, blocking the favicons, deleting History, restart and reset Safari, deleting RSS feeds and on and on. One problem which has been regularly reported is Safari's memory leak which can push your Virtual memory use into the GB range in a few days if you leave your Safari open [even tho not in use] for any length of time. This is what I have done/do: 1 Set the Icons file permissions to Read only. This is in ~/Library/ Safari/Icons. This prevents a build up of the favicons from web sites you visit. 2 Clear the java caches every week or so 3 Restart Safari every two days or so to release the memory 4 Empty Safari's cache every day 5 Clear the history every day 6 Disable RSS I still occasionally see a SBBOD but I think my Safari now is as fast as I can get it. Then launch Safari, go to the Debug menu, then select Turn Off RSS Support, and follow the instructions. Optionally, go to your bookmarks and select RSS feeds from the sidebar. Delete them, or copy them to an alternative RSS reader. I agree with Ronni's idea that disabling RSS feeds is worth a try in speeding up Safari. I have done so and believe it has made some speed improvement. However I have enabled the Debug menu through a terminal command. I would always rather use the OS's own apps where I can than add a third party app which is basically only a GUI wrapper for terminal commands. AFAIK Safari Enhancer is just such a GUI wrapper and has itself been suspected of causing some slow down of Safari by some users. No, I can't give you exact references but if you search the Apple Discussion boards you will find many references where Safari Enhancer is suspected of such slow down. But, as usual, if it is working fine for you, then OK. To enable the Debug menu here is the Terminal command: defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1 You need to quit Safari, type in the command, hit Enter, then relaunch Safari. To remove the Debug menu; same procedure but change the 1 to 0. I think you can also do this with Tinker Tool but I do not have that app. To Bill Cole: Thanks for the info about the multiple messages. I don't have IPv6 turned off so that can't be the reason. Lately there have been a few instances where I have received duplicate emails [same date, time, from address] on a few lists including this one. Only occurs sporadically. Undoubted voodoo. Cheers .
