Re: Getting an iPod Shuffle *today*. Is it possible?
I have trouble swallowing that a corp. like Apple can do this sort of thing accidentally or through some oversight. I think they've must have been around long enough now to know how their stuff is going to sell, roughly. Is it just me but are there always folk who cant get their stuff for a week or more. If they indeed were up to something, what possible benefit could *not* selling your products ASAP. Sometimes I think I must have no business acumen at all ;) Which is better, to have a known quantity of orders to fill that you can plan and budget your resources for, or to build too many and then have to sell them at a discount (eroding your price point), and having to explain to your investors why you built too many of them... Re: Getting an iPod Shuffle *today*. Is it possible?
My school ordered a G5 iMac in December. It might arrive next week! Are they also in short supply? Rod Pretty much anything using a G5 processor is constrained by IBM's G5 production line. At one stage I believe IBM were hand delivering them to Apple. Various anecdotal reports on Macintouch seem to indicate that some G5 iMac's power supplies may be dodgy, which would require the supplier (Delta Electronics, I believe) to work out what's going wrong and fixing it... Which would then mean more production delays etc.. Re: Home network mystery
Does anyone understand why a mac should register on the network while 2 PCs don't? Did you try replacing the network lead with a crossover network lead (or non-crossover lead if you're already using a crossover lead). The PowerBook is likely to autodetect what sort of cable you've got, whereas the windows boxes may not. Alternatively the windows boxes are looking for services on the network (that aren't there) to determine if they're on the network. Whereas the PowerBook is looking for something different. Re: Pending Mainstream Revolution
If Apple becomes more mainstream to whatever level (and we keep crowing about our immunity from viruses), will Apple products become a target and what is the probability that they will have a similar success rate as with the disruption to MS products? Are Macs inherently less vulnerable due to better design or is no-one targeting them because there is no challenge in knocking out 5 - 10% of the market when you can knock out 90% with the same effort? Cheers, Alex Traditionally (in the pre Mac OS X days) Macs enjoyed some protection because they didn't have a commandline. Currently they enjoy some protection because they use a different processor to the Wintel machines, and thus exploits for Wintel don't work on PowerPC (although this is changing) In the future, the security will be reliant mainly on the 40 years of Unix software development which underlies the Mac OS X architecture, combined with the 'fresher' technologies borrowed from the NeXT, Linux and Open Source communities, regular security updates (provided Apple keeps those Security updates coming, everything should be fine :) and a move towards stronger security architectures and better use of encryption. There are three sources of security problems, Open Source code, Apple's code, and third party code. Usually Open Source security problems are usually rapidly patched, and frequently Apple rolls these fixes into the next security update. Typically these problems are also present on all the platforms, although it's not necessarily that the exploit for PowerPC is widely available. Apple's code has 'security through obscurity' (which doesn't help much), and Apple's internal security group are responsible for ensuring holes are fixed as soon as possible in the next Security Update. Apple also has a vested interest in insuring its OS is secure. Third party code, such as Microsoft's products are going to be hanging around for a while, and really, I suspect that's where most malware propogation is going to happen, as individual companies with a single product may have less experience, source code that is not open for inspection, and no real responsibility for overall security. Really, if the percentage of Mac users out there increases, then it's likely that the percentage of Mac crackers out there will increase. The thing is to limit the rate of that increase as much as possible. Re: Drag Drop Users Folder ???
Question : I can bak up the users file to another hard drive BUT can it be drag dropped back into place on a new user ? Deep in the underpinnings of Unix is a userid associated with each user. If you're replacing the folder and it has the same userid (and hence privileges), you shouldn't have a problem. The userid depends on which order you create your users in, and probably a few other things, which probably depends on how damaged the disk is that you're dealing with. Otherwise, it requires fixing the privileges. Either way I'd run Fix Permissions from Apple's Disk Utility. If that doesn't work you'd need to fix them from inside Terminal. Re: Backup Disk Ideas?
A cheapish idea would be to buy two 3.5 IDE drives and then buy external USB drive cases for them - I think a 120/160GB drive is about around 100 dollars these days and a USB case should cost around the same - I used one of these setups once at an old workplace - a nice cheap solution. Oh, and a piece of tape to mark backup drive X on the drive (: Only downside was the cooling fan for the drive case was a little loud - and since I was sitting near the server most of the day, it was a bit irritating. I usually turned it off all day until I left for the day to leave the overnight backups running. Personally, I'd suggest never using USB to connect hard drives. In my experience it's slow (yes, even USB2), can cause disk corruption, you can't boot off them (there may be a few exceptions to this), and really it's not the job USB was originally designed for. Re: laptop stand
sorry this screams gadget gimmick - so long as there is sufficient airflow any decent laptop stand should not need additional cooling and simply moves the fan noise from inside the case to outside the case. Any well designed laptop will have sufficient cooling by convection (simply air flowing around it) and/or by its internal fan to allow it to work on any flat surface so long as the laptop stands on it's feet. (This doesn't always hold true to things like using it on a bed spread or similar where the surface touches the back plate rather than just the feet). But a stand is definitely useful if you're going to use your TiBook or AlBook on your lap. I'm glad my machine appears sweat resistant so far... I don't want anyone finding the keys to have free access to my house to take what they like! Re: Re : Reverse lookup?
The trick seems to be answering the phone quickly and then talking to a person to tell them you want to be off their list. Our major problem is the way our phone is set up there is a few second delay between when you pick the phone up ( ie the line becomes active) and you can talk to the other person, and the computer interpreted this as there being no one home, and so hung up on us. Once we were able to talk to a person we solved the problem but it took a while ( and some, in this case helpful, discussions with telstra) to work out how to stop it. Not sure if they work here in Australia, but you could try playing these three tones at the start of an answering machine message: http://privatecitizen.com/sit.html (Or playing them to everyone who rings you up, but it's probably easier to get the answering machine to do it). Re: Reverse lookup?
Does anyone know if there is a way to do a reverse lookup on a phone number in Australia? cheers Jude The Reverse White Pages were removed from sale after (amongst other things) Telstra won a court decision http://www.geocities.com/ssamam/reverse.html There may be copies out there still somewhere. Otherwise your best bet is informing the police, and the telecommunications company and the Australian Communications Authority if the call is harassing. (Safari and IE quits and Firefox does nothing) All other internet services work fine( email browsing software update and Ichat) I have reinstalled the OSx to version 10.3.3 and updated to 10.3.7 and trashed preferences. Using ADSL DSL 300 with iinet. Ibook G4 384MB All ideas will be greatly appreciated. Rob By 'Download' do you mean 'unable to view web pages'? Have you tried remote web pages (like www.slashdot.org) and local ones (like iinet's?) Check to see if you have a proxy set in System Preferences' Network Panel. Re: Tv on PB G3 pismo
Is it possible to watch TV on PB G3 Pismo? If so how? John That's really two questions: * Is it possible to get TV input into a PB G3 Pismo? Yes. The USB EyeTV is a solution for standard TV. If you need HD TV then you'd need the FireWire version (although technically that requires a G4 minimum), and most reviews seem to indicate that a G5 is necessary for HD TV playback. You can also watch live TV from the USB EyeTV on a Pismo. (You could also pass TV from a source with a tuner (such as a video recorder) in via a firewire video camera or other firewire converter, but this is much more involved). Note that EyeTV TV Guide solutions aren't the greatest in Australia (although this is gradually improving...) A review of the EyeTV 500 is at http://www.eff.org/broadcastflag/eyetv500.php Note that the better the resolution you want, the more disk space it takes. The EyeTV USB takes up abour 600Mb/hour. DV camera video is 12Gb/hour. HDTV video from the EyeTV 500 is about 6Gb/hour. If you want to purchase a HD TV recording solution you should do so before the US FCC mandated 'broadcast flag' comes into force, after which TV stations can determine whether or not you're allowed to record particular programs. Both EyeTV solutions are detailed at http://www.elgato.com/ or ask WAMUG regular Daniel Kerr at [EMAIL PROTECTED] * If the TV is pre-recorded (say, by an EyeTV or downloaded from one of the various sources on the net) you may be able to play it with QuickTime Player, or the free VLC, available from http://www.videolan.org/ If you just want to watch TV on a spare monitor you have lying around, you could try the AverMedia TV box http://www.scorptec.com.au/index.php?catid=0035order=manufactureroffset=30 Have fun, Shay -- === Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer Join Team Sungroper in the Opinions for hire [POQ] 2005 World Solar Challenge http://public.xdi.org/=Shayfnord http://sungroper.asn.au/

Re: Non Reply To Posts
I'm a bit confused about this. Can anyone please explain the reply system? Surely many off-list replies are sent purely because this odd system of not being able to reply to the list solely by just hitting reply. If you reply to all, then you are sending two messages, which I find unnecessary, and if you want to just reply to the list, which IMO is mostly what people want/should be doing, you have to replay to all, then delete the individual's address and then move the WAMUG address to the the correct box. This doesn't happen in any other list/forum I subscribe to and I find it a pain, what's the reason? Thanks, Matt. The problem with 'reply to sender' as the default is that many (particularly novice) users intend to reply to the poster, and don't realise it's actually going via the list. This of course is then usually followed by a post which says I'm sorry about that. And then possibly a post from someone else which says That's ok etc. This way it requires a little more thought (and effort) to send a message to the list, and it doesn't happen by default, hopefully increasing the signal-to-noise ratio. Re: Recommendations for a scanner please
Hello, I am looking for scanner to work with my TiBook G4/800 with 10.3.6. (not worried about it being portable, this is almost totally deskbound these days. Predominantly most likely to used for scanning photo's - do not have a digital camera, do have a very nice SLR, and reckon a scanner is the way to go. Do not have a huge budget but would rather pay a bit more for a better version than the cheapest one around. Any recommendations/ideas or don't touch gratefully received. You get much better scans from scanning the negatives than scanning photos, as negatives provide you with higher contrast... http://philip.greenspun.com/panda/images Kodak offers to provide you with a PictureCD (not a PhotoCD) of your images for $10 extra at some outlets at the time of developing. I'm quite happy with that service. My experience with paying for batch negative scans at a photo shop for old negatives is that usually they'll scan them without any scratch reduction etc, which is much better done at the time of scanning. Having borrowed a Nikon negative scanner from a friend the images (and scratch reduction) were vastly superior to those I got from the person at the store (admittedly I didn't shop around for quality) who didn't really care. Of course the downside is you need to scan them yourself (or pay a flunky). I have no experience with flatbed scanners with slide adaptors, which seems to be what you're asking about. Re: mpeg file not openable
howdy, the other night a fired and I attempted to down load some film of Sunday School kids to make some clips to show on sunday morning, from a Canon mini dv camera. But alas for some reason the connection via firewire failed- we figured something wrong with the cable, because the same thing happened when we connected to his PC. We ended up borrowing a another camera and laptop form a golfing pro friend - (its good being in a church were so many people have modern computers cameras and the like - shame only 2 of use macs) any way we got the movie clip on the camera onto the lap top via fire wire via microsoft movie maker. dunno what format the file became, anyway as far as I know iMovie only accepts DV as the input file, so we used some DVD software to create a mpeg2 file hoping that would be openable on my mac. DV format isn't MPEG2. When I got home, Quicktime says that the 650MB mpeg file ins not a file format that quicktiem understands? - oh bloody hell mate so my question is, if a movie is made and loaded onto pc, how do we get it onto a mac, so that is useable and useful. MPEG2 is one of those evil patented standards which requires licensing. You can license the QuickTime en/decoder from http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/71206/wo/zy1SW4EEp8EN3VqQNpj1REitRi9/1.0.11.1.0.6.25.7.11.4.3 The reason it costs US$19.99 is because Apple is forced to pay royalties for it. Re: iPhoto disaster
Dear WAMUG, Just hit a problem with iPhoto. I ran it and imported from my camera, with delete after import checked. I went away and came back, it appeared to have done the importing and said the camera had no photos. I was a bit shocked when the import only showed the three oldest of the 22, and Last Import showed the same. I closed it and reopened - and even these photos had disappeared off iPhoto. Personally I never let iPhoto delete images from the Camera. I use Image Capture (as it also imports movies, whereas iPhoto ignores them). Thanks for any advice. Panicking, Download PhotoRescue and see if it can recover the images from the card http://www.datarescue.com/photorescue/ If you're really paranoid then do it from a machine other than the one you ran iPhoto on. Using the Finder you could do a search for each of 0.png,2.png,4.png,6.png,8.png and then drag those files off to a separate folder. Although I suspect the DSL300 doesn't work like that as it's a modem, not a router. If that doesn't work you may need an appropriate serial cable and USB-serial adapter such as a keyspan. Re: chmod +x on the executable
I just downloaded some BOinc software from SEti that says * Macintosh OS/X, Unix and Linux users: Use gunzip to uncompress if your browser has not done it for you. Then chmod +x on the executable and run it. Please excuse me. What on earth does this mean? The file says, there is no default application The client is Unix based, so you'll need to run it in the terminal. So you'd download it to somewhere and then open terminal and type gunzip then drop the file into the terminal window and hit return. This uncompresses the file Then type chmod +x and drop the now uncompressed file into the terminal window and hit return. This sets the file's executable bit. Then drop the file into the terminal window and hit return. This will run the commandline application and prompt you to answer some questions and enter your magic codes that SETI have e-mailed you. Personally I'd recommend waiting for the GUI version if this all sounds too difficult :) So, for example you might see machine: gunzip ~/Desktop/boinc_4.13_powerpc-apple-darwin.gz machine: chmod +x ~/Desktop/boinc_4.13_powerpc-apple-darwin machine: ~/Desktop/boinc_4.13_powerpc-apple-darwin Have fun, Shay -- === Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer Join Team Sungroper in the Opinions for hire [POQ] 2005 World Solar Challenge [EMAIL PROTECTED] fnord http://sungroper.asn.au/
Re: Battle on for next DVD standard
As a result, a Blu-ray disc is expected to have storage capacity of more than 50 gigabytes, compared with about 30 gigabytes for HD-DVD. A single-sided, single-layer current-generation DVD can store only 4.7 gigabytes. Which is why I'm hoping Blu-ray wins the battle. My Retrospect backups would just fit on one of those 50Gb disks :) Have fun, Shay -- === Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer Join Team Sungroper in the Opinions for hire [POQ] 2005 World Solar Challenge [EMAIL PROTECTED] fnord http://sungroper.asn.au/

Re: empty cache
Hi all, With respect to my previous posting regarding emptying Safari's Cache automatically. I have tried a script (found on the internet) that invokes the 'empty cache' option on Safari. I was going to put it as an application in the logout folder in the student's workspace. It seems to read well but comes up with an error. Here is the script: tell application Safari activate tell application System Events tell process Safari click menu item Empty Cache... of menu Safari of menu bar 1 end tell end tell end tell However it returns the error: System Events got an error NSReceiverEvaluationScriptError 4 A search on the internet reveals the error stating the object doesn't support the command that was sent to it Can any one put me on the right track? The ellipsis (...) after Empty Cache should be a proper ellipsis (ie option-:) You'll also need to tell Safari to click the Empty button after selecting that menu item :) Probably easier to just quit Safari and delete the cache files from ~/Library/Caches Have fun, Shay -- === Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer Join Team Sungroper in the Opinions for hire [POQ] 2005 World Solar Challenge [EMAIL PROTECTED] fnord thttp://sungroper.asn.au/
Re: PC vs Mac? No contest
If anyone knows of any Package for mac that is as good as Protel 99SE and can let me come over and have a play, I may be able to dump M$ windows for ever and turn my PC's into servers ;) Kat. I don't know about 'as good as Protel', but there was this on Macintouch the other day ADsoft released the first Mac OS X version of its EAGLE Layout Editor, a printed circuit board design tool. The software, which requires the use of Apple's X11 window manager, offers up to 16 signal layers, undo/redo for any editing command to any depth, electrical rule check, an integrated text editor, a full set of parts libraries, and much more. The EAGLE Layout Editor is available in Light, Standard, and Professional versions with prices ranging from $49 to $399. It runs on Mac OS X 10.3 with X11, Linux kernel 2.x and up, and Windows. http://www.cadsoftusa.com/info.htm I also tried out Darwine recently. Bizarre seeing the Windows RegEdit app running on your Mac under X11... Here is the scenario: 15 PowerBook and 12 iBook both running 10.3.6 both have file sharing turned on but can't put files in the drop box because message says do not have privileges. Can't connect to the other because message says password is incorrect. I would greatly appreciate if someone could do a step by step in plain English run down on how to get file sharing to work. Re: Video editing hardware/software
Hi all, Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations about video editing hardware/software to transfer VHS to Mac via firewire/usb. Any good and/or bad reports greatly appreciated - cheers. Depending on what level of editing you need to do, I find iMovie to be pretty good (and better at outputting to some DV cameras than Final Cut Pro :) Don't forget iMovie can be beefed up with third party effects plug-ins. For those not afraid to do some basic scripting to 'roll their own' effects I find VideoScript to be pretty useful too... http://www.videoscript.com/download.html QuickTime Pro is also useful if you want to cut and paste bits of movies together. There are a number of similar tools listed at http://www.versiontracker.com/php/search.php?mode=basicaction=searchstr=movie+editplt%5B%5D=macosxx=8y=8 A copy of iMovie 4 iDVD - The Missing Manual is also a good stocking stuffer :) http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/imoviemm4/ Have fun, Shay -- === Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer Join Team Sungroper in the Opinions for hire [POQ] 2005 World Solar Challenge [EMAIL PROTECTED] fnord http://sungroper.asn.au/

Re: ADSL Availability in Joondalup and Osborne Park
I can hardly believe that - this means that in the midst of an explosion of low cost ADSL marketing by all and sundry, Joondalup and Osborne Park are left out. Surely this can't be true. As you pointed out a) There's an explosion of ADSL and b) it's low cost. Hence lots of people will have been taking up connections, and they haven't had any money to spend/incentive to provision the exchanges with new rack space to plug everything into. Upgrade schedule info is at http://www.telstrawholesale.com/products/docs/access_broadband_adslre03.pdf http://www.telstrawholesale.com/products/access_broadband_reports.htm But it doesn't seem to list an Osborne Park exchange as far as I can see. Hi everyone, I acquired a eTrex GPS hand held and I have MacGPS. I zapped the pram booted the baby and after much swearing and cursing I am now in the state that I get a blank white screen , I cannot get the original software disk to come up, putting in Mac OS X.2 install disk will not load, I hear the disc spin up and then slow down. I have tried to start with shift held down and with T held down without any luck. I remember watching Matt start up in Unix but do not know how he did it and wonder if I did manage to do that whether I could navigate my way through to the 'nasty software which I suppose is causing the trouble. The ever helpful Dan is working his butt off and cannot get here until at least tomorrow. Can anyone make any suggestions immoral or otherwise ;-) Mac Try starting up with command v held down. This will display what's happening, which might display an error message. You might also try rebooting with the shift key held down for longer. Re: .wps
I have received a file from a novice computer user in France called: Document sans titre.wps Does anyone know what the extension .wps means? Look suspiciously like a virus but the sender has only been on the internet for a week or so. It takes under about 20 minutes for an unprotected Windows machine to get infected if it's connected to the internet. It takes longer than that for Windows users to download their security patches. It's probably a Microsoft Works document. I'd suggest they re-save it as text or RTF and send it again as Microsoft Works has gone the way of the dinosaurs. You should be able to open it with Microsoft Word and save it as something more useful. Re: Home permission repairs?
Now finding that I can't get the users permissions repaired correctly even from a backed up disk Not important right now as I'm just going to CCC the whole back up on to the internal drive but has anybody else noticed this or able to suggest a fix? I'd guess that it's possible (but unlikely) that something in the OS X update changed the UIDs. Alternatively, has the 'respect permissions on this volume' setting for the FireWire drive/iPod changed? There seem to be preliminary reports on http://www.macintouch.com/panreader43.html of possible weirdness with external FireWire devices under 10.3.6, so strange things may still be afoot. Re: Home permission repairs?
for the record the external firewire drive is a Yikes model G4 tower that was placed with the user while his G4 iMac was warranty serviced. iMac came back with a new hard disk and 10.3.6 installed I updated my iPods OS to 10.3.6 so that I could test 10.3.6 without installing it on my work mac (though I've had it on my laptop since it came out with out issues) As far as the computer is concerned when booted from iPod it doesn't seem to matter what respect/ignore permissions is set to. booting from the Yikes box which is still running 10.3.5 (which is a CCC'ed image of his iMacs disk prior to going in for service) and logging in as an admin user or root (which is what I tried first) and copying his results in the same end permissions issues when booting the iMac back to 10.3.6. As it is I've got his machine for only an hour or so late this afternoon (which is all he can spare it for) so I'll just image his old disk on to the iMac. WAMUG is powered by Stalker CommuniGatePro Sounds like the user ID's are different on the different boot disks. Try nidump passwd / When booted from each system and see if the user ID's match (The user ID is the number after the second colon) Have fun, Shay -- === Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer Join Team Sungroper in the Opinions for hire [POQ] 2005 World Solar Challenge [EMAIL PROTECTED] fnord http://sungroper.asn.au/

Re: Mac Malware / Spyware threat
Dear WAMUG members, I turn to you guys in this time of trouble as a regular reader of the informative posts to WAMUG. I have been lurking on this list for the last year. Well not quite a lurker, coz I did introduce WireTap when it first came out so I have contributed to our collective knowledge once!! I am in a hotel in Portland, Oregan USA and it has wireless access (US$6 a day). Yesterday I hexperienced something as a Mac user of 8 years as never b4. As soon as I logged to this network in the local hotel I have had problems with a VERY WEIRD 'popunder Javascript' (having looked at the source) which takes over my internet connection and thus I have been unable to load a page for the last 2 days. Have I experienced the first ever example of Mac Spyware or Mac Malware??? I accessed the internet at San Fran Airport no problem with T-Mobile (US$5 an hour). Sydney Airport was also no prob at all. All websites loaded produce the same infinitely reproducing popup windows ( actually a pop-under window). This is the page source: Does the hotel's wireless redirect you to a web page for you to enter a registration ID or username or something? (this is quite common with paid access wireless) If so I'm guessing it probably also pops up an ad (which possibly has faulty javascript). Did you turn pop-up blocking on in Safari (command-k)? Does the hotel's wireless require you to specify a proxy server for web access? If so, have you done so?
