I think Gmail will work better in your shared mail box scenario - the
NetRegistry plans don't mention IMAP (required to have all mailboxes in sync).
Gmail has the best spam filtering I've come across, and it works on the server
side (so you don't need to download all the spam to your mail client before
filtering and deleting it).
The Standard Edition Google apps gives you 7GB of storage for free.
You're also not tied in to a contract (the netregistry plans all seem to
specify 1 year).
Sure, you may be giving Google all your trade secrets, but they've probably got
them by now anyway :)

Anyway, it works for me!
The other collaboration features like calendars and Google docs are the real
bonus in my usage - I can access everything I need from whatever computer I
happen to be on at the time...

Regards,

Steve

You can configure .Mac to host your domain and enable iWeb's one-

choose Set Up Personal Domain from the iWeb File menu, or go to

Hi Ken.

These steps should do the trick:

You can easily import contacts from Microsoft Entourage using vCard
format.

To import contacts from Entourage on the G4:
  1. Create a new folder in the Finder on your desktop named
"Contacts".

  2. Open the address book in Entourage.
  3. Select the contacts you want to export. If you want to
export all of them, choose Select All from the Edit menu.
  4. Drag the selected contacts into the Contacts folder that
you created. This creates vCard files for each of the contacts you
selected.

  5. Quit Entourage.
Copy the folder you created to the Powerbook
  6. Open the Address Book application.
  7. Choose View Card and Columns from the View menu.
  8. Drag the Contacts folder from the desktop to the Groups
column of the Address Book window.

The contact information should now be available in Address Book (and
therefore also in Mail).

Re: iTunes 7.1.1 problem

2007-05-29 Thread Steve Woods
Hi Jude.

>From the FAQ at gracenote:

"I put in an AC/DC disc, but the service says it's ABBA! Why?

This should be extremely rare. This would mean that the disc in your CD-ROM
drive just happens to have the exact same TOC as another disc in the database.
The TOC is the "table of contents", the list of song lengths stored in the disc
itself. Because of how the TOC is calculated it is extremely unlikely that two
unrelated CDs would have exactly the same TOC. It does happen sometimes for
discs with only one track, but the odds of this occurring go down with more
tracks. If this does occur, just enter the information for your disc and submit
it as a new disc. "

I guess you've found two examples of this "rare" problem...

Basically - the songs on the CDs have the same lengths as songs on a different
CD in the CDDB.
This info from Apple explains it as well:

Not sure how to get the Finder to display the correct modification and creation
dates - this seems broken for the Audio CD I just tried too...
My guess is the creation/modification dates are not stored as part of the Audio
CD format??

Jon,

I think the answer is in your question...

As far as I am aware, Bigpond charges for all traffic (other than
from their own servers), so Software Update downloads will count
towards the total.

Assuming that a bunch of Software updates were installed in the last
month, that could easily account for 750MB...

A number of other ISP's allow free traffic from Akamai's servers -
would definitely be worth a look!

Hope this helps!

iMovie 5 doesn't support USB cameras (which the built-in iSight is).
You need iMovie HD aka iMovie 6.

Alternatively, you could use Quicktime Pro (low cost) or Quicktime

When TechTool Pro 4 is properly installed on the active boot volume,
the eDrive mounts for a moment and then is automatically unmounted, to

OT: Re: CMS for web site

2005-09-05 Thread Steve Woods

Hi Chris.

Really depends on what you want to achieve, but yes a CMS is useful
for keeping a website current - and does have added overheads.
In general they require some sort of back-end database as well as
scripting support - so need a hosting package that provides for this.

The basic difference as I would explain it is that a CMS allows you
to add and edit content straight from a web browser, whereas a
"static" site needs an off-line editor (like Golive - or even Text
Edit:)
This makes life easier if a number of people are involved in
maintaining the site, or if edits need to be made from various
locations.
Integration with photo galleries, rss feeds etc etc are added
benefits of a good CMS.

Have a look at for details on some of the
different "free" CMS systems available - these particular ones rely
on PHP/MySQL so would need hosting that supports a MySQL database.

I personally favour Drupal or Joomla (was Mambo).

$360 a year sounds a lot - depends if that includes the domain too I
guess... I'm sure there are better deals out there

Hosting one of these CMSen on your Mac (of course:) through an ADSL
account may also be a possibility to consider.

Be aware that this is a "private" ip address - only accessible from

For others to see the pages you're creating, you'll need a static
external IP address (or a dynamic DNS domain name).
You'll also need to set up your internet connection (and any
firewalls/modems) to allow access to your machine on port 80.

This is not trivial, and you may want to consider using your
ISP's-provided web space (if available)

so my question is
1. is there an apache tutorial anywhere which explains setting up an
index pages then other pages for Mac OS X
2. how do I determine the web address for each html page I make, so I
can link them in the various pages I create

any advice on these matters would be appreciated.

This HTML tutorial should help - (Apache is just the web-server
software that your Mac is running, and the HTML pages are independent
of it)

The answer is to use relative links, so that the pages will work from
whichever folder or machine they're hosted on.

Hope this gives you a starting point.

Hi Reg.

The answer to this question really depends on what you want to do with
the document once you get it on to your Mac.
Publisher has a variety of options (depending on which version you've
got) and each option has it's own pro's and cons...
There is no easy way to get the "correct formatting" and resolution for
editing on the Mac that I'm aware of though... :(

Options (in my order of preference) are:

save as HTML from publisher
(most of the apps listed above will handle this pretty well, but the
formatting will be variable)

save as postscript (.ps)
(can be converted to PDF with distiller (or even Preview)) - not really
editable - but you could copy/paste the text out easily enough.
Graphics could be screen captured if you don't need high res.

Save a a .doc - though you lose all the graphics that way.

Pull the document apart into it's component pieces on the PC - text as
plain text, graphics as tiffs/jpgs - then reassemble in your favourite
Mac program.

Depends if you've got easy access to a PC with Publisher on it.

I'd be happy to have a go at converting it to something useful as best
I can if you email me the file.*

Hmmm !

I thought files ( as in documents ) just copied when you dragged them
from one drive to another ! ?

I suspect that Michael's new firewire drive is FAT / MS-DOS formatted,
which has restrictions on file name characters and length.
I'd suggest reformatting with Disk Utility (in your
/Applications/Utilities folder) as HFS+ and trying again. If you can
see the file in the finder, you _should_ be able to copy it wherever
you like...

Hi Michael,

Try turning off "Block Pop-up Windows" in Safari.

I guess there's a redirect in place on the login page in preparation

You don't mention the version of PowerPoint, but in vX and 2004 at

Definitiely a scam of sorts.

Important points with this particular one:

"Note: This listing is restricted to pre-approved bidders or buyers only.
Email the seller to be placed on the pre-approved bidder/buyer list. "

(ie: Please sign up for our spam list and get hassled to buy all sorts of
junk :)

and the Feedback shows that bob6960_0 apparently hasn't ever sold anything
on Ebay (but has bought an odd assortment of Xbox and elctronics gear).
Identity fraud on eBay is a potential problem to watch out for. (ie:
sellers hijacking someone's account that has reasonable positive feedback)

I've used eBay a number of times with no problems whatsoever, but you do
need to be able to spot a scam, and do your homework. I'd _always_
contact the seller prior to placing a bid, and prefer to "buy local", so I
can see the goods before parting with my hard-earned.

Firewire is your best bet (assuming both iBooks have firewire :).

You just need a standard 6 pin firewire cable.
Turn one iBook off, plug in the firewire cable to both, and restart while
holding down the "T" key on the keyboard.

The screen should show a firewire symbol, and the hard disk mount on the
other iBook.

Copy the files across as needed, and simply drag the hard disk icon to the
trash to eject the disk when you're done.

'POP account' in Eudora Pro 3 should include the full address of the
popserver.

Try putting '[EMAIL PROTECTED] .au" in that field.

I wish OE for the Mac has this facility without setting up a rule to

As Onno mentioned earlier - you can only block messages entirely by
stopping

them at your mail server.

Actually, the "blocked senders" list in the win version of OE is just a

It doesn't stop anything, just quietly moves mail from the specified
addresses

to the Deleted Items folder.

The same effect can be achieved on the Mac version by setting up a group
with the spammers email addresses, and setting one rule to move
everything
from that group into Deleted Items. You could create a script to
automate

adding addresses to the group from highlighted message(s).

Alternatively, I've found the built-in Junk Mail filter to work
reasonably well after

a little "training".

YMMV
