I am still running Sierra on a number of iMacs. No problems with what I do
with them.

In the early 1960s whilst teaching in PNG, I had several flights in a Catalina.
The only updates I could see was the removal of the weaponry. Beautiful
machine!

Just don’t expect to run it like Excel. It uses the concept of Tables within
Worksheets, so you can keep all your associated data nice and discreet. You can
have multiple worksheets, of course, but multiple tables within each worksheet.
You can also refrence data cells between tables as well as worksheets, just as
in Excel.

Numbers doesn’t support pivot tables, but it does have categories and summary
fields, which gives you the same effect. So many other differences.

Enjoy.

Ok thanks Peter. I see now two options available for the 32 bit check.
Will take a look to see what I have at risk of 32 bit programs.

The System Report in MacOS gives you a guide, but by far the best
resource is Go64 from St Clair Software
https://www.stclairsoft.com/Go64/ [2]
This program scans your computer and shows a list of all software on
your computer. You can clearly see which apps are 64 bit and which are
32 bit, but it goes so much further than that. It also shows a list of
software which is “mostly” 64 bit, but may have problems because
of some components which may be 32 bit. In other words, the programs
will launch, but certain activities may wither fail or even cause the
software ot crash.
Go64 bit also has a delete function, letting you remove 32 -bit
software on the fly, rather than having to make a note of it and look
for it afterwards. Handy as a clean up tool even after installing
Catalina.
These are just a few of its functions. Did I mention it’s free
(donationware)?
Well worth the download.

After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, I finally bit the bullet

although I do renew every year by buying Office 365 from Officeworks
(and just applying this to my existing account) which is always
cheaper than MS auto-renew price. I guess there are a few factors for
me:

* I use a LOT of Excel spreadsheets/workbooks and I really want/need
to stick with Excel rather than any spreadsheet alternative.

* Georgina is on the Albany Hospice board and still has to
collaboratively deal with Word documents.

* One subscription covers both Georgina and myself and we each get
our 1TB OneDrive storage included

* With just one subscription, It all integrates well between several
computers, iPads etc

* I don’t have to worry about whether I need to buy new updates –
they are included with the subscription

* Being retired, we no longer have work computer(s) as an alternative

I realise that is just what suits me and that your situation is
different, particularly if you rarely use Office programs, but I just
thought I’d relay my experience.

Righto, thanks for that link Ronni. For a number of reasons in
reading through the link, I can see no reason for me to update to
Catalina yet - if ever. Currently I have an old (but still
functioning) MS Office for Mac 2011 which is useful for whenever I do
have an Office file, but I don't use it often and have alternatives
with my Work Windows laptop. The removal of iTunes. I didn't explore
that but it seems pretty large in impact. Presumably there are
precautions to take. But for the moment, with my perfectly functioning
Macbook Pro 2013 running High Sierra, it is all good.

All I have to remind me is a constant red dot over App store saying I
have an OSX update I 'should' do.

Will look into the iTunes things some time.

I also think there is no longer available a localized installation
for Office 2016 or later and we now have to resort to the constant
funding model the software developers want us to use with annual fees
- Office 365 as an example. I may use Word or Excel up to 5 times in
any one year. It really doesn't make sense to fund an annual
subscription for one machine when I have alternatives. I know my case
is unique to me and others will be solely reliant on their Mac's, so
then it is justifiable for them.

Yep.

Click on the Apple Logo in top left of screen.
Then "About This Mac”
Then “System Report”
Then under “Software" click on “Applications”
Select each Application and look for “Kind”

A bit time consuming to check every one.
But I don’t know of a quicker way.

Does anyone have any guidance for a Once off purchased MS Office

Re: Horrible Catalina

2020-04-29 Thread Stephen Chape
Yes Peter.

I have not had any issues.
It is possible that Office 2011 may have because Microsoft stopped supporting
it about 18 months ago.
But I spent quite a bit of time (well before Catalina release) identifying all
my 32 bit software on my iMac.
Then set about either updating them or replacing them.

Re: Horrible Catalina

2020-04-29 Thread Peter Crisp
Hi Bill, thanks for that response. It triggered me into looking at the
availability of MS Office for a once off purchase. I see Office 2019
is also available for once off purchase. I don't want to go down the
Office 365 route. All I could see was the single user licence. Do MS
still do the 5 user licence for MS Office once off purchase? I thought
that Office 2011 would be incompatible with Catalina (being the 64 bit
requirement).
Does anyone have any guidance for a Once off purchased MS Office
(Multi licence) that is Catalina compatible?

Kind Regards

Peter Crisp

Re: Horrible Catalina

2020-04-29 Thread Alan Smith
Hi Pat

Some suggestions:

1. Ensure you have the latest Catalina version (macOS 10.15.4) installed.
What was your previous OS? Did it update from Mojave or Sierra or ---?

2. Are you using USB or Bluetooth for the Wacom tablet? There may be a common
USB issue if tablet and external drives are all affected. Can you access data
on both external drives?

3. Check external disks visibility is turned “on” in Finder > Preferences >
General to show items on desktop.

4. Check external disks visible in Finder Sidebar via Finder > Preferences >
Sidebar.

5. Use Disk Utility with “View - show all devices”. This should show all
mountable drives and their status.

6. Have you tried SMC and NVRAM resets? And the good old computer Restart has
fixed many odd problems.

Cheeers

From a Finder window, have you checked Finder > Preferences > General? Not
having Catalina yet either I’m not 100% sure of my ground here, but I’m
assuming things haven’t changed THAT much, but there should be a checkbox
allowing you to show a number of items on the desktop. You’ll see Hard disks at
the top of the list.

Things have been extremely quiet on the Catalina from ever since it was
released. I don’t know whether this is because nobody is downloading it or
everyone who has is happy with it. I do know that Adam Engst from Tidbits was
forced to move to Catalina after a recent SSD failure. Like the rest of us he
was waiting for the “right” time, but since upgrading he seems to have no
complaints.

Still thinking about it, but my Mojave frying pan is working so well I don’t
want to go jumping into any fires...

Re: Horrible Catalina

2020-04-29 Thread Tim Law
Peter I was initially nervous about ditching Word and Excel; and certainly was
never going to pay for them. I have found Pages and Numbers to be perfectly
suitable for the rare occasions I need to open a word or excel file.

I’ve found alternatives to the other 32 bit software that I really needed, and
realised I never used most of them anyway when they died with Catalina.

I know I’m an early adopter and enthusiastically embrace the next big new
thing. Then troubleshoot my way around whatever that rash decision has
presented.

I know that’s not for everyone

Regards
Tim

Like you Peter, I’m keeping both my Mac computers running High Sierra and I see
no reason for me to upgrade at this time.
High Sierra is a very secure and stable OS.

2020-04-29 Thread Peter Crisp
Righto, thanks for that link Ronni. For a number of reasons in reading
through the link, I can see no reason for me to update to Catalina yet
- if ever. Currently I have an old (but still functioning) MS Office
for Mac 2011 which is useful for whenever I do have an Office file,
but I don't use it often and have alternatives with my Work Windows
laptop. The removal of iTunes. I didn't explore that but it seems
pretty large in impact. Presumably there are precautions to take. But
for the moment, with my perfectly functioning Macbook Pro 2013 running
High Sierra, it is all good.
All I have to remind me is a constant red dot over App store saying I
have an OSX update I 'should' do.

Will look into the iTunes things some time.
I also think there is no longer available a localized installation for
Office 2016 or later and we now have to resort to the constant funding
model the software developers want us to use with annual fees - Office
365 as an example. I may use Word or Excel up to 5 times in any one
year. It really doesn't make sense to fund an annual subscription for
one machine when I have alternatives. I know my case is unique to me
and others will be solely reliant on their Mac's, so then it is
justifiable for them.
Kind Regards

‘Apple’s latest Mac update, macOS Catalina [2], was released
earlier this week, and with it came a flurry of complications both
minor and major.

For one, this update is the first for Apple to drop 32-bit
application support, which is causing all sorts of headaches for users
of smaller apps, plug-ins, and other software that may not be updated
for quite some time or may have been created by a company that no
longer exists. There are also a fair number of other issues with
Catalina, like Adobe software incompatibility problems and unforeseen
hurdles related to the removal of iTunes.

That leads us to a series of important questions for Mac users who
may be at risk of having important workflows disrupted by Catalina.
What exactly might go wrong if you do upgrade? Should you upgrade now,

Hi Pat, sorry to hear this. I had heard of some troubles from people
on the WAMUG upon the initial release of Catalina but nothing of late.
Your note comes out of the blue for WAMUG I think. Can you be specific
about the issues you;re having?  I am holding off doing my update to
Catalina simply because I hadn't had the time to research if the early
issues had been resolved or not. Do others have any first hand user
experience about it's use and issues they have had.
Is there anyone else recommending to NOT install Catalina at this

Hi Pat

Sorry to read that you dislike Catalina. It will be replaced - one day! In
the meantime - - -.

AppleUsers dot org website lists five MUGs in Queensland.

  https://www.appleusers.org/mug-listings/

Most appropriate would seem to be Apple-Q in Brisbane:
