safety

2021-07-20 Thread Jim and Nancy Faivre
As a retired child protection investigator, I often commented on child rearing
then as compared to now. Opie, his friends and even Leon were not well
supervised at times and allowed to roam wherever they wanted. I also cringe
when I hear Andy say “That boy has got to get a whippin’”! it was a different
time back then, but things have definitely changed.

Andy smoking

2020-07-11 Thread Jim and Nancy Faivre
Andy smoked ( in bed) when Gomer was a house guest
Andy smoked while “courting” Mary ( Sue Ann Langdon)
I believe Andy smoked a cigar when he was visiting the father of Opie’s friend
when Opie went to camp.
Andy and Barney smoked the peace pipe while rehearsing for a play.

"Banjo- Playin' Deputy"

2020-04-04 Thread Jim and Nancy Faivre
I picked up on some curious things in this episode. First, Jerry goes in the
back room and is next seen wearing a perfectly fitted uniform. ( Guess they had
a uniform store in the back where he and Otis got their uniforms, as well as
Gomer). Andy then left the courthouse saying he was going to the carnival and
was not wearing his gun belt and gun. When he got to the carnival he had it on.
Then when he stopped the two purse robbers he told them to get moving,
presumably to the patrol car, but then he stood there talking to Jerry. The two
robbers could have been half way across the fair grounds by that time! Curious,
Curious.

Gun Safety

2017-08-24 Thread Jim and Nancy
Just thought of the episode where Andy shot at the counterfeiters who
were trying to flee in their car.  A law enforcement officer would not
have done that when there were people in the area.

Firearm safety

2017-08-21 Thread Jim and Nancy
I know Barney accidentally firing his gun was part of the humor, but it
definitely wasn't displaying gun safety. Today I was watching "Opie's
Medal" and observed Barney fire his pistol in the office with it pointed
to the ceiling.  I believe the Mayor's office was above them.  Then he
fired it in the air at the start of the race, but bullets that go up
also come down!

Another episode that bothered me was when the ex-convict gave Andy a
shotgun. When the lights went off, Andy tossed the gun on the couch.  It
would seem that since he was a sheriff and a hunter that he would not
have treated a gun that way.

Other than Barney accidentally shooting the floor or the ground, were
there any other examples of poor firearm handling on the show?

Animals and smells

Gomer heard a "Lake Loon" when he and Barney were lost in the woods
and then they "caught and cooked" a pheasant

Ernest T Bass went in the woods to kill a mockingbird
Opie raised three birds: Winkin', Blinkin' and Nod
Ernest T was going to live in a cave with chipmunks and squirrels
Dud Walsh went fox hunting
Charlene was going to cook some fish muddle
Andy "talked " to a hawk
A bear treed the prisoner Andy had released
Otis and Andy thought Barney's ink blot looked like a bat
Barney was concerned about going crazy from bats laying eggs in his hair
Andy talked about hunting geese when given the shotgun by an ex- convict

Andy, the mayor and others talked about catching carp

Politically Incorrect

2016-07-26 Thread Jim and Nancy
There was probably something politically incorrect, according to today's
standards, in just about every episode. One episode that stands out is
"Ellie Runs for Council" . In that episode Otis told Andy to "never
apologize to a woman" and "if you want results, hit her in the mouth
with a leg of lamb!" Andy also commented that they ( the men) control
the purse strings. In another episode, Barney was putting up wanted
posters and Andy made reference to seemingly petty crimes such as
"chicken thieves and wife beaters". The show often made light of such
issues as alcoholism and domestic violence for comedic reasons of course.

Other Shows and Other Things

2016-04-24 Thread Jim and Nancy
First of all, I want to say that I am (and always will be ) a huge fan
of TAGS. My wife I watch the show almost daily and we have gone to the
Mayberry Days in Mt Airy and in Westmeinster. I have also enjoyed
reading all the posts on this site, but have noticed a gradual change in
it lately. After I asked the question about fans least favorite show,
there was an outcry about negativity. The host even posted the rules
stating to keep it positive. I had meant no negativity and apologized
if I had offended anyone. Then the issue of what constitutes an "alumni
sighting". I threw in my two cents worth only to have it pretty well
pointed out that anyone who had appeared on TAGS was an alumni of the show.
Recently, I was enjoying fans telling of their other favorite shows
other than TAGS , but at least one fan took exception stating this site
was for discussion of TAGS and not other shows. Hmmm - did I note a
touch of negativity there?!
So am I to take from this that there are only to be strictly TAGS
related positive, happy posts on this site? That's ok, but remember
there were negatives on TAGS just as there is in life. Sure TAGS always
ended with a positive message, but didn't there have to be some type of
negative or screw up to get to that positive message?! How about when
Opie killed the bird, or all of Barney's misadventures or maybe Andy and
Helen arguing? Everyone makes mistakes but as TAGS showed, it's what we
learn and how we grow from them.
So if you want a site that has no tolerance for any negativity ( no
matter how slight or unintentional ) and are content to report what
"alumni" you saw on what show, then great! I'm just not sure that is all
in the true spirit of TAGS.

Thank you.
Jim

***SPAM*** Alumni Sightings

2016-04-19 Thread Jim and Nancy
It would seem that a true "alumni" sighting would refer to someone who
was a regular on the show who appeared on another show. Let's face it,
many of the character actors who appeared on TAGS were on other shows.
You could watch old shows every day and likely see someone who appeared
on TAGS. So, I think, a true alumni sighting would be if you saw Andy,
Don Knotts, Francis Bavier, Ron Howard, etc on another show rather than
people like James Best, Joanna Moore, Alan Hale etc. on another show.
Alan Hale would technically be an alumni of Gilligan's Island rather
than TAGS. I know James Best appeared on Gunsmoke more than he did on
TAGS Would Andy starring on "Matlock" be a true alumni sighting, or Ron
Howard on "Happy Days or Don Knotts on "Three's Company"? Guess everyone
has his or her own interpretation of what an alumni sighting is!

Least favorite episode

2016-04-05 Thread Jim and Nancy
When I asked about least favorite episodes, it was not my intent to
offend anyone or bring any negativity to this site. My wife and I are
huge TAGS fans and we have always enjoyed this site. I was just curious
as I figured each of us has his or her favorite episodes as well as
least favorites. I enjoy hearing some discussion on different topics
regarding TAGS as well as the occasional trivia question. After all, if
we were all talking face to face wouldn't some of these issues come up?
It seems like there are a lot of "alumni sighting" posts which is ok,
but I like to hear opinions and discussion about other things that are
TAGS related.
Again I meant no disrespect to Mr. Newsome and all of the TAGS fans on
this sight.

Andy & Don

2016-01-14 Thread Jim and Nancy
It is not a matter of putting Andy and Don on pedestals as I have never
put any celebrity on one. I knew before I read the book that they had
their "darker sides". I'm just saying that it is not appropriate to
write such things when the main subjects can't defend themselves. In my
opinion this author was just out to make a buck at the expense of Andy,
Don and all TAGS fans!

"Andy & Don"

2016-01-13 Thread Jim and Nancy
I just finished reading "Andy & Don". I found the book to be
interesting, but at the same time somewhat disturbing. The author wrote
of Andy and Don's struggles and successes. He also wrote about affairs,
bouts with drinking, depression and fits of anger. In reading this
book, I'm sure neither Andy or Don would have wanted some of that
information known to the general public. I have a problem with authors
such as this one who write of such things when the subjects are no
longer around to defend themselves. It seemed evident that the author
was not gearing his book to TAGS fans as evidenced by the subject matter
and some of the terminology he used. In my opinion, this author was
opportunistic and did not have the best interests of Andy, Don, their
families and their fans at heart.

I would be interested in hearing others' opinions about this book.

Christmas Special

2015-12-26 Thread Jim and Nancy
I enjoyed watching the TAGS Christmas show. The color did look
different such as the brick around the cells.
I did make one observation regarding a calendar hanging in a cell. When
Andy and Ellie were singing, the camera panned to the cell window to
show Ben. Just under the window was a calendar showing the first 24
days crossed off as if to indicate the countdown to Christmas. I noticed
the particular month it was on had only 30 days and the 25th was on a
Wednesday. The only time I could find a 30 day month with the 25th on
Wed. was November, 1959. The picture on the calendar appears to be an
ariel view of Washington DC as you can see the Washington Monument.
In the Pickle story, the characters were shown biting a pickle 30
times. This included Andy, Barney, Aunt Bee, Clara, Opie and the two
judges. If Aunt Bee was such a good cook, why couldn't she make a good
pickle?! One of life's little mysteries, I guess!

Cheers & TAGS Characters

2015-07-03 Thread Jim and Nancy
In comparing, Norm to Otis, while it is true that both like to partake
of spirits, the similarity ends there.
Otis' character was more of a physical type of comedy with his
staggering, hallucinations and humerus comments. Norm was a working man
who had more of a dry sense of humor and you rarely saw him get off his
bar stool.
Cliff's know-it-all attitude is probably more like Barney that Howard.
Barney and Cliff acted like they knew a lot to make up for their lack of
confidence and knowledge. Howard was more scholarly and actually knew
what he was talking about even though people may have found him boring.

On another note, I did see see Howard McNear in a scene with Elvis in
"Blue Hawaii" the other day.

Happy and safe 4th of July to all!

actors and actresses during his career. My wife and I were so fortunate
to have met him at Mayberry Days a few years ago and to have gotten his
autograph.

A few years ago we stayed at the Taylor Home Inn in Wisconsin shortly
after Mr. Best and his wife had stayed there. We stayed in the same
room the Bests had been in. I have kidded my wife that she and James
Best slept in the same bed!

As Andy sang: "We shall meet, but we shall miss him" . RIP James.

Elements

2015-03-23 Thread Jim and Nancy
Here is what I could come up with off the top of my head (didn't have my
bucket on!):

- oxygen: Barney told Andy to breathe in the oxygen after the cave rescue
- nickel: Opie said milk at school cost a nickel
- iron: the old iron cannon
- silver: Barney was protecting the silverware when Malcolm was "drunk"
- tin: Opie kicked a tin can
- gold: the gold shipment
- iodine: Andy put it on Opie's cut
- copper: it was mentioned that copper was used to make stills
Can't think of the other ones, Paul! This was one of your more creative

Hunting

2015-03-19 Thread Jim and Nancy
There was a mouse trap in the old freezer on the Taylors' porch ( Call
the man!)
Opie shot the bird with the sling shot but not sure if that qualifies as
hunting.
Opie hunted for Mr Frisbee's rooster when they were ready to bulldoze
his house.

On another note, we watched an episode of "Leave It To Beaver" in which
Beaver found a wallet full of money. He took it to the police station
and was told if no one showed up in 10 days the money was his. Beaver
looked for things he would buy with the money. On the tenth day he went
to the police station to get the money and wouldn't you know that a
woman showed up at that time to retrieve her lost wallet. Does this
plot sound familiar?! Opie found a wallet full of money; waited to see
if anyone claimed it; planned how he would spend the money and then on
the last day a man shows up to report a lost wallet. The "Beaver"
episode was aired in 1960 while the TAGS one was in 1964. Could Andy
have "borrowed" the story line from "LITB"?! Say it isn't so!

Hunting

2015-03-17 Thread Jim and Nancy
Barney and Gomer were hunting when they got lost while on the camping
trip with Andy and the boys. The caught the cooked pheasant! Andy went
crow shooting with Thelma Lou's cousin and also when Goober's
girlfriend, Flora, "hurt" her ankle. Goober was on a hunting trip when
he grew his beard, but don't know what he was specifically looking for.
In the reunion movie, Barney was hunting for the "lake monster".

Andy and the ex-convict who gave Andy a shotgun, talked about hunting geese.
Barney and the men also "hunted" for Andy and Helen in the cave!

Things That Don't Make Sense

2015-02-19 Thread Jim and Nancy
Ken, I agree with you regarding Andy and Barney driving the car back.
Why would they drive the car back and how were they going to get back?!
In "Andy & Opie Housekeepers", Aunt Bee was uppset over how messy Andy &
Opie were, but that was the only time we ever saw the house that messy.
Also in that episode, Clara cleaned up the entire house in the time it
took Andy & Opie to go get Aunt Bee at the bus station! Pretty fast
cleaning! And would a woman really get upset if the house was clean when
she got home?!
Also it never made sense that Andy would take advice on relationships
fro Floyd and Barney.
And of course, one of the biggest no sense makers was hanging the key
between the cells where any prisoner could reach them!

Bass tapped on the metal gas can when he serenaded Charlene. Drums were
played when Opie was in the rock band. Drums were played in the bands at

Suitcases and Hymns

2015-02-12 Thread Jim and Nancy
Well, Paul and Ken sure know their suitcase episodes! Nice job! Let's
not forget when Mrs. Mendlebright got her "valoose"!

As for hymns, "Leaning on the Everlasting Arm" was sung in the church
and also at Charlene and Dud's "official wedding". Andy & Barney sang
"One Vacant Chair" for Otis. Not sure if "We Shall Not be Moved" (sung
by Aunt Bee and a group of women at Mr. Frisbee's house) is considered a
hymn, but it is a spiritual song that dated back to the slavery era and
was often used as a protest song. Andy and Ellie sang "Away in a Manger"
but that is probably more of a Christmas song than an actual hymn.

Mayberry Spirit

2014-11-25 Thread Jim and Nancy
This morning my wife and I were watching news about the situation in
Ferguson, MO. We started talking about the condition of the world in
general and wondered what the world would be like in the future. I said
that at some point every parent wonders what kind of world his or her
children and grandchildren would grow up in. My wife commented "It sure
isn't Mayberry." Unfortunately that is probably true. True, complete
Mayberry has never existed. Even when TAGS was on in the Sixties, there
were problems such as war, protests, civil rights marches and leaders
being assassinated. Yet we tuned into TAGS every week to see a world in
which we all wished we lived. For a few minutes, we wished the world's
problems were as simple as they were on TAGS. Even now we still do the
same thing. Bits and pieces of Mayberry still exist in the world. We
hopefully try to live our lives in a moral and Christian way and spread
the Mayberry spirit. It is important that we pass on the life lessons
and values of TAGS to future generations. So as we prepare to celebrate
Thanksgiving, may we spend the day in true Mayberry fashion with family
and friends. ( Just don't heave the bread or taters during dinner!) May
we all keep the spirit of Mayberry alive and well.
So Happy Thanksgiving to all my TAGS friends and lotsa luck to you and
yours!

I agree with you Dave. There isn't much on the major channels that kids

Raising Kids; Theme park, etc

2014-08-06 Thread Jim and Nancy
The idea of a TAGS theme park is interesting, but not sure if it would
attract many people other than our current TAGS generation. There would
also be a risk of over commercializing TAGS and it might take away from
the true Mayberry spirit.
I agree with Ken about how much things have changed with the rearing of
children today as compared to TAGS. I worked as a child protection
investigators for years and often remarked that what was acceptable in
the days of Mayberry would not be acceptable now. Things like leaving
Opie alone at home; and letting him wander on his own without knowing
where he was would get Andy and Aunt Bee reported these days. And of
course taking kids out to the woodshed is definitely a no no now! The
show also made light of other problem's of society such as domestic
violence, alcoholism and the woman's place in society. They made for
funny story lines but compared to today's standards would not go over
welll. Granted today's shows are worse in many respects as nothing is
taboo especially when it comes to sexuality and moral values. If these
shows were on when I was a kid, I would not be able to watch any of them
due to their content. One could argue that the old fashioned methods of
parenting that Andy Taylor used were effective and kids respected adults
more. Parents are either afraid or too lazy to discipline their kids
now. If a kid acts out these days they are diagnosed with something
such as ADHD or Oppositional Defiance and put on medication. In a lot
of case it is likely a case of lack of good old fashioned Mayberry
morals and values! We need a good mix of Mayberry values, good
parenting skills, common sense and good moral judgement in today's world.

May the spirit of Mayberry live on in all of us!

Convertibles

2014-06-18 Thread Jim and Nancy

I have not seen the following mentioned:
Andy - when he met with Lee Drake, (the female attorney)
I believe Goober drove the car he sold to Aunt Bee
Andy gave the guy with the squeaky brakes a ticket and I believe that
was a convertible with the top up. ( Not sure if that counts!)

Andy courted Mary ( Sue Ann Langdon) in her convertible
Terri Garr was seen in a convertible at the gas station

Church organ

2014-05-08 Thread Jim and Nancy
Granted they should have gotten other donations for the organ or have
everyone help build the barn, but don't you love it when an "organ
transplant" is successful?!!

Bugs

2014-04-21 Thread Jim and Nancy
There were bats in the cave that could got in your hair, not moths.
Moths are very annoying though!

There was one episode in which Opie asked if he could outside and
collect fireflies.

Andy was also trying to swat a fly in the courthouse one day.

I think Aunt BEE should count!!!

Bugs

2014-04-17 Thread Jim and Nancy

I thought of the following "bug" referrals
- Fly - Andy was trying to swat one in the courthouse
- Spiders - There were spiders under the old bandstand and Gomer tried
to hit one with a hammer.
- Centipede - Barney didn't believe it when Andy told Opie about the
insect with one hundred legs.

- Aphids - Mr. Wheeler supposedly saw aphids on Aunt Bee's roses
- Bugs - Opie was trying to catch bugs and worms to feed his birds
- Fireflies - Opie would go out at night to catch fireflies
- And of course, we can't forget the most famous reference: Aunt BEE

Brothers

2014-03-26 Thread Jim and Nancy
First we have the Darling boy who were brothers to each other and to
Charlene. Then Bill Matthews was Lucy Matthew's brother in "Stranger in
Town". Mayor Stoner's bother happened to have a business where the new
road was being constructed ("The Loaded Goat"). Tommy Parker was Betty
Parker's bother in "Big Brothers". And let us not forget that Andy
pretended he was Opie's older brother in "Floyd the Gay Deceiver"! Also
Andy, Opie and Peggy were "blood brothers"!

Smoking

2014-03-11 Thread Jim and Nancy
Smoking was one negative about Andy. Of course it was much more common
then. It is weird now to watch those old shows and see so many actors
smoking. It occurred on almost every show such as TAGS, Dick Van Dyke
and Lucy to name a few. Andy smoked in different places- on the porch,
in bed ( bad Andy!), at the court house and at Quiet Sam's house after
he delivered the baby. Barney smoked a cigar. Otis, Mr Goss and man in
a hurry all smoked as well

.
While on the subject of smoking, on what episode was there a reference
to marijuana? I know that is probably an easy one for many TAGS fans,
but is kind of curious that such a reference would have been made on the
show.

Here is another unrelated trivia question. What actor, who later became
famous on "Laugh In", appeared on one episode of TAGS?

Andy, Opie and Aunt Bee were very hospitable and always had the welcome

Languages

2014-03-03 Thread Jim and Nancy
I believe Barney spoke Spanish and German. Andy counted in French. The
colonel spoke a Native American language. Sam Jones' friend and the
friend's family spoke Italian. The gypsies might have spoken a foreign
language. The Russian dignitary who stayed at Andy's house spoke
Russian. Aunt Bee's restaurant business partners spoke Chinese. Barney's
Judo instructor spoke Japanese. The only other one I can think of was
Malcolm. He spoke English but it often sounded like a different language!

Modes of transportation

2014-02-16 Thread Jim and Nancy
I guess the red wagon could count, but it's a stretch! Aunt Bee must
have "roasted" pulling that wagon in the heat, but after all she had a
lot at "steak" as she had to "meat" the butcher. Andy had a legitimate
"beef"when he told her to "call the man!"
While we are on the subject of modes of transportation, name two that
Barney operated that did not have motors.

Modes of transportation

2014-02-15 Thread Jim and Nancy
I was thinking of the following vehicles: Andy - squad car, Barney's
"lemon", Mary's ( Sue Ann Langdon) convertible and Aunt Bee's car.
Barney - squad car, his "lemon", the station wagon pulling the trailer
and I believe he drove or gave the impression he had been driving
Floyd's car when it ran out of gas. I forgot that he drove Bailey's
T-bird. Aunt Bee drove her car, took flying lessons and was on the
tandem bike. I don't think she drove the truck. I am at a loss as to
what the fourth mode was.
Now how about other modes of transportation (besides cars) that they
rode in or on?

People who wore uniform

2014-02-13 Thread Jim and Nancy
I can recall the following people who wore the uniform: Andy, Barney,
Warren, Goober, Gomer, Otis, the man from the D.A's office, Ernest T.
Bass, the criminal who was holding Andy and Barney hostage and Jerry Van
Dyke. Judd and Floyd were deputized but did not wear the uniform.

People Andy did not like

2014-02-05 Thread Jim and Nancy
I believe Andy was not crazy about Mr. Frisbee, Ben Weaver, Aunt Bee's
old flame ( Roger) and there was a sheriff from another county that Andy
also did not like. He also did not like the cow thief who put shoes on
the cows!

The Darlings Are Coming

2013-09-03 Thread Jim and Nancy
I just watched this episode and heard Aunt Bee say something I had not
caught before. When the Darlings had eaten in the jail cell and Aunt
Bee was picking up the dishes she referred to Mr. Darling as "Mr.
Briscoe". Maybe she "specializing" on him then!

Color episodes

2013-09-01 Thread Jim and Nancy
I agree that the colored episodes were not as good, in large part to the
supporting cast. Emmet, Howard, Warren and Goober were not asgood as
Gomer, Barney and Floyd. Another factor was Opie was getting older and
was not as much the cute little adorable kid that he had once been.

Hats

2013-08-03 Thread Jim and Nancy

I recall the following times Andy wore a hat:
- Andy put on Barney's motorcycle helmet
- Andy had on his sheriff's hat when Malcolm helping out
- Andy put on a fishing hat that Opie brought him when an inspector was
there
- Andy had a newspaper over his head and face when he was resting when
Gomer stayed with him.
- Andy had a night cap on when he first tried to married the son and
daughter of the feuders

Experienced Meat Cutter

and Gomer replied " Do you think they will ask me that?". I wondered if
I applied if I would be asked that!
