I totally agree, I don't expect my pages to look exactly the same cross
browser/platform and at all screen resolutions. If a 3px jog ever drove me
to the point I needed to use hacks so it wouldn't be there on any browser it
would be time for me to find a new line of work.

Really, I was joking big time. I was going to say css_servant, but
felt more idiotic, so went with that.

I bookmarked the site you mentioned, and will visit when I have some
motivation going for me. Just spent 1 hour to find a stupid goof on a
page of mine. Still working on that set of pages with the UL list for
the menu, makes a lot of sense to use it because it cuts way, way down
on the loading time.

Need.more.motivation..to
work on my pages. Actually feeling better than yesterday, but still
not up to my usual active self or maybe it's just I'm sick of working
on my pages. That could be it.

2003-07-15 Thread Jan
Ahem...Uh.., etc.

Rudy,
How hard did you laugh when I told you I copied the import statements
right from the w3c specs? I hope it was a good one. It kept nagging me
because I knew you had to be right, so just a few moments ago, I
went to the w3c specs and yes, it was right there, BUT, it was showing
2 examples of how to do the import statement. I was in a hurry, and
just copied it as it was.

A thousand apologies oh king of css from this humble css_idiot.

I have Opera set to display a 'lovely' shade of yellow which while not

I don't have NN 7 to test with but it should display the same as Mozilla and
avoid even more AOL garbage to uninstall.

[wdvltalk] Re: Publish video?

2003-07-15 Thread Bankei

You have a few choices to make. The most important is streaming vs.
progressive download vs. download.

streaming: the video streams in real time from a streaming server (i
recommend www.playstream.com). Use Real or Windows Media

Progressive Download: Video starts playing during download when the
player feels that it can keep up. You can do this with QuickTime, Real or
Windows Media but you'll need to sort out MIME types and metafiles for
Real or Windows Media.

Dawnload: You can just download the file to play on the client machine.
This works for the big 3 but works very well using MPEG-1 (playable in any
player).

Most companies don't bother to embed Real or Windows Media. To get an
embed tag for QuickTime go to www.metroencoding.com/viewdemos.html and
view source on any of the QuickTime demos.

NS 7.2, IE6.0 800x600 DSL WinXP Pro at 1024x768 site expands well but
is not centered, all the extra space goes to the right, but it still
looks good.

Very good looking site, my favorite is the Royal Lux Arm Chair:
"This here is a fine example of a chair with which you rest your
arse and what not. Its quite comfortable and you will find no arse
creases in it, as it is also quite resilient. Add the attractive
exterior to this already arse-riffic chair and you have something
truelly not too bad"

It loaded fast, and links work well too. I like the colors you have
chosen for the site, very refreshing and professional looking.

There's only one problem and it's in NS7.2, there are 2 scrollbars on
the right side which looks funny. On IE there is only one right
scrollbar, as it should be.

Even though I checked out your page and css, I'm not experienced
enough to catch the problem. One thing did catch my eye though, you
have "overflow:auto;" in your css body section. What will that do?

Heh, I know the feeling. I just finished a project that was around 8 months in the
making (~4 or 5 weeks actual time). My first Web App with a full CMS/dynamic back
end. After looking at it for that long, I absolutely hated it and ended up completely
redesigning it just for my own edification. Of course, it's probably one of the
better designs I've ever done, so I guess it's for the best :)

Out of curiosity, what is it you messed up on? Just validation issues? I might be
able to help with some of that.

We use Abby Fine Reader 6.0 to scan our text through the scanner and it
does a pretty good job. Try the trial version and see if you like it. I
agree what Janet said about proofing it again but it makes it easy in
Abby Fine reader as it opens two windows where you can look at the
actual page as well as proof. It auto detects some spelling errors too.

Does your scanner have an OCR option? If so, I would try that so that
it
scans it in as text instead of an image.

You may have to make some corrections though. It's been a while since I

used OCR with a scanner, but I do remember having to make some
corrections

replaced
them with a different character or a number. I'm sure the technology

Drew,

Truth be told, DW:MX sticks it in there automatically when you tell it to
make xhtml compliant documents. It's not really doing *anything* useful at
the moment. But I believe were I writing my own dtd's and creating custom
tags in xml, that would be necessary to start the xml parsing service (wow,
that's a big assumption on my part, but that's the impression I get).

oh, a necessary addendum: that xml declaration throws IE6 into quirks mode. Drop it

Drew,

Truth be told, DW:MX sticks it in there automatically when you tell it to make xhtml
compliant documents. It's not really doing *anything* useful at the moment. But I
believe were I writing my own dtd's and creating custom tags in xml, that would be
necessary to start the xml parsing service (wow, that's a big assumption on my part,
but that's the impression I get).

[wdvltalk] Re: MS SQL help

2003-07-15 Thread Cheryl D. Wise
Thanks Jon, right now this is jus on our intranet/development server. I've
got the permissions working but am now getting other errors which may just
relate to the third party app but I was too frustrated yesterday to deal
with it. It is something we were evaluating.

After spending time on their support forums and seeing reports of others
with the same problems who couldn't get it resolved with the instructions
provided (tried 3-4 times) I decided that it wasn't the app for us. I made
an executive decision that if it was that much of a PIA to install I'd
either find another app or write it myself. Considering how much I *love*
writing real code it must say something about the product that I decided
that writing it myself would be preferable to trying to deal with getting
the app working correctly.

Sorry, I'm a bit late on this thread...

Setting up privileges isn't that difficult: you can right-click on an object
(a table, stored procedure, or whatever) and click the "Permissions" button
to edit who can do what with that object - if your app is *really*
well-designed, your web user can get away with having nothing apart from
"Execute" for stored procedures :-)

If you have lots of users, you can set up groups just like you can in NT
account management. You do this through the Logins applet, which you'll find
in the Security folder - double-click on a user and then open the Database
Access tab. From here you can control which users can access which
databases, and which groups they are in. Ideally, stick everyone who only
needs basic access into the "Public" group and then assign permissions to
that group rather than to individual users.

Creating databases is even easier:
- open the "Action" menu
- select "New database..."
- type a name
- click OK

As your host is running an earlier version, you may need to use a different
compatibility level - MS SQL 2000 defaults to level 80, but I think version
7 uses 70 (you might want to check this though). You can change this by
right-clicking on your newly created database, selecting "Properties" and
opening the Options tab.

You're probably best off asking your host about the best way to upload a
database - you can have Enterprise Manager write a script that contains all
the SQL statements necessary to rebuild your database structure, but I
haven't worked out how to include data in that as well :-(

Sorry this was long, but hope it helped a bit.

Cheers
Jon

Okay Jac,
I've set up a super simple example at:
http://www.mechavox.com/sandbox/overflow.html
the key is using the style:
overflow:auto;
in conjuction with a fixed height and width on the containing div. If the
content is long enough to require scrolling, it will do so automatically,
otherwise it will look just like normal content. As far as integrating this
with your site, you'd need to either include the content in the div
dynamically or place it inside the div statically. It looks like it'd be
easier to do it as an include, since you already have the content on
separate pages.

I don't need another book to turn my brain into tapioca. It is already mush,
I am so frustrated.

SQL the language isn't the problem nor is designing/understanding relational
databases. It is just that I've never had to deal with managing the SQL
server, permissions, etc.

I've been writing the sql statements, asp/asp.net code to use the databases
for a years (asp, about 16 months for asp.net) but I've never had to
administer the server. Now I have to administer, set privileges, that sort
of thing on both existing databases and new ones to be created. That's where
my problem arises.

The books I have available all talk about database structure, sql language
but not one of them even "MS SQL Server 2000 for Dummies" have much on the
actual administration of the server. For example under permissions, there is
one page that tells you in summary 'here's the dialog box for permissions,
check the boxes you need' no additional explanations.

I hate server administration but I've been stuck with the job because I know
more than anyone else currently here which is a sad commentary because while
I can adequately (barely) administer a Windows 2000/2003 server I have never
worked directly with a SQL server other than making a connection to an
existing database.

two books that I can recommend:

All-In-One MCDBA SQL Server 2000
SQL Server 2000 Design and T-SQL Programming.

Those two books '*should turn your brain into tapioca in no time!'

Have fun with it, the system is very powerful and for the most part...user
friendly!

http://www.sqlcourse.com/intro.html This is not MS SQL inclusive, but it
really helped me with some basics. There is some forums available as well
that may prove useful if this group is not able to get you out of a jam.

[wdvltalk] RE: date problems in conversion from Access to SQL

2003-07-15 Thread Van Der Westhuizen, Sonja
Hi Diane,

Why don't you create a stored procedure with your query in?, just pass the
paramaters through that you need to run it then. Maybe start with a simple
one first.

Also check what sql is using for a dateformat. Your server settings will
also influence it. Last time I had this error was becuase sql was set to
-mm-dd and I had dd-mm-.

The cast functionality is correct sql function to use to convert it to date

Like I said change the datatype to datetime or use cast or convert functions
for DOB fields.
Also Datevalue is not a T-SQL function it is VB-Script function.
SELECT [DATE OF BIRTH], [FIRST NAME], [LAST NAME] FROM members WHERE
(DATEPART(mm, cast([DATE OF BIRTH] as datetime)) = 3 AND
DATEPART(dd,cast([DATE OF BIRTH] as datetime)) > 20 ) OR
(DATEPART(mm,cast([DATE OF BIRTH] as datetime)) = 4 AND
DATEPART(dd,cast([DATE OF BIRTH] as datetime)) < 20 )
