[Wikimediauk-l] Movement strategy - UK update, including details of first meeting on 10th April

2017-03-24 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

I am inviting you to join in the ongoing discussions about the future of
the Wikimedia movement. As Chapters, user groups and individual
contributors we are being asked: What do we want to build or achieve over
the next 15 years? What role do we want to play in the world in 2030? Who
will have joined our movement? What work lies ahead of us?

There are various different ways in which individuals can voice their
ideas, including:

   - Participate

<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2017/Participate>
on wiki
   - Attend an in-person meeting
   - Participate in a live online facilitated discussion (e.g. through
   Skype or Google hangout)

There are three cycles during the first phase of the process (which
culminates at Wikimania 2017), with the first cycle coming to an end on
14th April. Wikimedia UK will be organising or helping to facilitate at
least one 'in person' discussion and an online live discussion during each
cycle, with the first meeting scheduled to take place on *Monday 10th April
from 3 - 5pm *in London. The first virtual discussion will also be
confirmed ASAP.

The meetings in cycles 2 and 3 will happen outside London and outside of
office hours, with details to be circulated when these events have been
arranged. In some cases, in person discussions will be organised at
existing local meetups (with the agreement of those communities) and in
others, specific strategy meetings will be arranged. Any interested
volunteers, members, editors or staff and trustees of the Chapter are
welcome to participate in any or all of these discussions; and I'd love to
hear from anyone who would like to take on a volunteer role in this
process, such as facilitating discussions, or taking and writing up notes
from meetings.

There is a lot of detailed information on meta about the strategy process,
with the main portal
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2017>
for
the project providing a high-level overview and orienting people towards
more specific areas of work. As the process unfolds, myself and others on
the Wikimedia UK team will contact you again with more details of the work
happening here and ways in which you can participate; however in the
meantime I would be grateful if you could email
nicola.furn...@wikimedia.org.uk if you are planning to attend the meeting
in London on 10th April.

Please note that as the Discussion Co-ordinator for the UK, I am
specifically concerned with the conversations happening within Track A
(organised groups) and Track B (individual contributors). Work is being
developed separately for Tracks C and D, which represent a broader audience
of new and existing readers and parters as well as experts in knowledge,
communities and technology. Wikimedia UK will support and contribute to
these discussions as requested by the Foundation, but they are not our
focus.

If you have any questions about the UK's role in the movement strategy,
please do ask. If you have comments on the movement strategy process in
general, or (crucially!) if you have ideas about where we should be heading
as a movement, please comment on meta
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2017/Participate>
.

With thanks for reading and all best
Lucy

[Wikimediauk-l] Possible documentary programme about the Wikipedia community in the UK - and how to get involved

2017-03-08 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

I've recently been in conversation with Red Sky Productions, a television
production company that creates factual television for leading UK and
international broadcasters, who are developing a programme about
the thousands of people in the UK who write and edit articles on
Wikipedia. This
came about as one of Red Sky's researchers heard my interview on the Today
programme as part of the #100womenwiki project late last year, which
sparked her interest in the structures, processes and above all the people
that make up Wikipedia.

Red Sky is particularly interested in the Wikipedian community and how
Wikipedia has brought people together both on and offline, and are keen to
talk to as many editors as possible about their work and involvement in the
community. There is no requirement to take part in any filming; at this
stage they are just researching and would like to have a friendly and
informal chat over the phone. They are also keen to hear about any social
Wikipedian gatherings that are coming up, which you may be happy for them
to pop along to.

If you’re interested in sharing your experiences, you can contact Yasmin at
Red Sky Productions on 0141 370 3486 or Yasmin.morgangriffiths@
redskyproductions.co.uk.

Please note that Ewan McAndrew, Wikimedian in Residence at Edinburgh
University, has shared Yasmin's message with the Scot-Wiki mailing list so
apologies for any cross-posting. Ewan has also spoken to Red Sky (who are
based in Scotland so naturally have a particular interest in activities
taking place there), and Ewan and I both feel this could be an interesting
opportunity to promote the unsung work of the Wikimedia movement's
community of volunteer contributors.

All best

Lucy

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Media spokespeople

2017-02-17 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Hi Gordo

I think for something like this issue, which was very much about on wiki
processes/community decisions, we would always want to put forward someone
from the community (i.e. not a member of the team). John and I have both
spoken to the media recently about issues that feel more relevant and
appropriate for the charity itself to comment on - such as my interviews
around the BBC partnership, and John's on fake news.

Cheers
Lucy

[Wikimediauk-l] Media spokespeople

2017-02-16 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

As promised I wanted to follow up about the Daily Mail story last week and
the need for the Chapter to be able to call on volunteers who would feel
comfortable talking to the media on behalf of the community. Thanks to
David Gerard for initiating this discussion on the list.

In the past the charity has offered media training for volunteers, and
whilst we haven't budgeted for this in the current year it's certainly
something to think about again in future. I attended CIPR's Media Handling
and Crisis Communications course earlier this week (with a free place
courtesy of Alastair McCapra) which I found extremely useful. As it
happens, I contacted six or seven people about the Newsnight request last
Thursday, but for various reasons we weren't able to provide a volunteer to
talk to the BBC...In several cases this was because the editor concerned
didn't agree with the decision, and so could potentially defend the process
but not the outcome. There will doubtless always be circumstances in which
a volunteer doesn't want to speak to the media about a particular story, or
is unable to do so because of work, travel, location etc; hence the need
for a 'stable' of people who can do this (sorry, I can't think of a more
appropriate collective noun!)

Either John or I will be in touch with those of you who have a) responded
to David's message about media spokespeople in the past few days or b) are
already on our radar as potential spokespeople, to create an up-to-date
list of names and contact details. Please feel free to add your name to
this list by replying to this message or dropping me and/or John Lubbock an
email.

With thanks and best
Lucy

Totally agree Sara! But given that the BBC are running with this as a
'story', it would be great if we could also educate people a bit about how
Wikipedia works ;)

[Wikimediauk-l] Wikimedia UK policy updates - consultation

2017-02-15 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

Many thanks to those of you who have inputted into the two policies I
circulated earlier this year for community consultation (about Diversity
and Safeguarding). I'm in the process of revising those draft policies -
according to the suggestions that have been made - for board review in
March.

As I mentioned at the time, I'm updating a number of board-level policies
and would welcome community feedback into the following working documents
by Wednesday 1st March:

Volunteers Policy

Safe Space Policy

Please feel free to add comments directly to the document or to email me
with your feedback.

Many thanks
Lucy

[Wikimediauk-l] Media enquiry from the BBC re editing/vandalism

2017-02-15 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

Firstly, many thanks to those of you who have said you would consider
responding to Wikimedia press enquiries in future, and I will be emailing
more about that within the next few days - particularly off the back of the
Media Handling and Crisis Communications course I've been on for the past
two days (and no, the irony of the timing wasn't lost on me).

In the meantime, we've had an enquiry from BBC North West online who
are working on a story about a music fan who apparently secured entry to
the VIP area of a gig by editing the band’s Wikipedia page to claim he was
a relative of one of the members. More fool the bouncers in my opinion but
anyway...the BBC has asked "we wanted to check that this change would have
indeed been processed this quickly and without being verified by Wiki
editors? Would Wikipedia be interested in adding a comment about users
making edits for their own means and what the organisation does to tackle
this?" Clearly the journalist in question doesn't understand exactly how
editing works and I think it would be most appropriate to have an editor
respond to this, and talk about processes in place to deal with vandalism.

The article is The Sherlocks <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sherlocks>
and the edit in question was made on 10th February at 8.28pm and reverted
by another editor at 4.15pm the following day.

Would anyone be willing to talk to the BBC about this today? If so, could
you let me know and I'll put you in touch.

Thanks
Lucy

Just to say that I've just had a chat with the nice man from Newsnight and
he's still really keen to set up an interview between the lovely Evan Davis

made. I'm making a few direct phone calls but if this is something you

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] BBC Newsnight want to do Daily Mail vs WP:RS tonight - editor on hand?

2017-02-09 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Hi all

Thanks very much for flagging this David. I think it would be great if
someone could talk about this from an editor's perspective - in particular
the process of consensus building within the Wikipedia community, as it's
clear many people working in the media don't understand this. If someone
does respond to you directly, please could you let me know?

The office has had a flood of emails and phone calls which we've been
fielding as best as we can. I'm hoping that when San Francisco wakes up and
comes online they will send me their statement on the issue, which would
help to deal with enquiries.

All best
Lucy

Hi Gordo (and all)

I'm not sure exactly when the name changed (certainly before Autumn 2015)
but we only produce one newsletter, which is currently called the Friends'
Newsletter. It's meant to indicated 'friends' in the broadest sense,
meaning allies, rather than the traditional voluntary sector use of
'Friends' which would tend to mean donors. The newsletter goes to paying
members but also a much wider group of subscribers.

[Wikimediauk-l] Feminism and Museums

2017-01-24 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

Over the next month I'll be writing a piece for a new MuseumsEtc.
publication, *Feminism and Museums: Intervention, Disruption and Change.* The
title of my chapter will be 'Closing the Gender Gap on Wikimedia' and the
focus will be on the work of Wikimedia UK and the wider global movement to
develop responses to the exclusion or misrepresentation of women and their
creative works. I hope to be able to draw on case studies of good practice
across the movement, showcasing partnership projects with museums or the
wider cultural sector including galleries, archives and libraries,
including those where the gender gap is compounded by geographic,
linguistic and racial bias.

I'd love to hear about any projects you've been involved with or are aware
of, however big or small, that might fit within the broad remit of
feminism, culture and open knowledge. I would like the piece to be as
inclusive and intersectional as possible so if you have examples of work
with or about particularly marginalised groups, such as (but not confined
to) transgender women, do let me know. I have contacted Art+Feminism, Women
in Red, the Executive Directors mailing list and UK-based Wikimedians in
Residence about this separately but again, feel free to suggest people I
should be talking to.

With thanks in advance, and all best wishes
Lucy

[Wikimediauk-l] Strategic Policy Review

2017-01-10 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

I'm in the process of reviewing and updating Wikimedia UK's board level
policies and as agreed at the last board meeting, this will involve
community consultation prior to amended policies being reviewed and agreed
by the trustees.

The first two policies that I have reviewed are the Safeguarding Policy
(formerly Child Protection) and the Diversity and Equalities Policy. I
think the easiest way to view my suggested changes against the original
policy is in a google doc, which I have shared below:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1R2WdCy2uILnmWXmzhfrEbgId862b6Ick5mfjdeGa6_Y/edit?usp=sharing
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1eIGcVTxhyeo1_sH0eOWqYJBgkiRzKLKNdU9Lc31lXa0/edit?usp=sharing

Please feel free to add comments directly to the document (ideally) or in
an email to me, by Friday 3rd February.

Many thanks
Lucy

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] BBC 100 Women and Wikimedia

2016-12-09 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Hi all

There does seem to be some disagreement as to whether copyright is actually
an issue in the case of the list of 100 women. I will be doing quite a lot
of follow up with the BBC over the next few weeks so am happy to add this
to my list of things to discuss, however I will try to seek legal clarity
on this question first.

Thanks
Lucy

Dear all

In the next few days I will be emailing more formal thanks to lots of
people involved in the events within the UK and further afield, but I've
just arrived home and before I open the wine I wanted to say how grateful I
am for so many people's time, energy, expertise and good humour today and
in the run up to today. More anon.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] BBC 100 Women and Wikimedia

2016-12-08 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Thanks Jonathan, that's a great idea!

At the training events we are of course reinforcing the need for
appropriate secondary sources, and lots of preparation work has been done
by Roger and other Women in Red editors, Stuart Prior at Wikimedia UK and
BBC staff to create lists of women to be added - with sources - on the
resources section of the meta page:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_UK/Events/BBC_100_Women_Resources

On the 'how to' video that the BBC made - basic as it undoubtedly is -
finding sources is point 4. Of course, this important point may get lost in
the ether so any support from the community in keeping articles up and
improving them would be HUGELY appreciated!

All best
Lucy

Dear all

As I know some of you will already be aware, Wikimedia UK, Women in Red and
Wikimedia editors and communities around the world are partnering with BBC
100 Women to raise awareness of the gender gap on Wikipedia, improve
coverage of women and encourage women to edit.

A multi-location, multilingual volunteer-led editathon will be taking place
in various locations across the world on *Thursday 8th December. *In the
UK, editathons will be taking place for BBC staff, presenters and special
guests in all four nations of the UK with events in Belfast, Cardiff,
Glasgow, London and Reading. Women in Red are also running a virtual
editathon to involve more established editors, particularly those who are
already working on the gender gap.

You can read more about this project on the meta page, which we will be
updating as the week continues: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_
UK/Events/BBC_100_Women

Whilst the events in the UK are primarily for BBC staff, presenters, VIPs
and other special guests, Wikimedia UK is collating a small guest list for
the Broadcasting House event. If you would like to attend, please email
nicola.furn...@wikimedia.org.uk (copied in above) and let her know which of
the following times would be best for you: 2 – 4pm, 3 – 5pm, 4 – 6pm or 5 –
7pm. Nicola is liaising with the BBC over capacity and will confirm your
space ASAP.

We are also exploring the potential for external guests at the events
in Cardiff, Reading and Glasgow, so please email Nicola if you are
interested.

All best
Lucy

2016-11-19 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Hi Charles

Yes, my reading of the FDC's comments is that they feel we could improve
the way in which we communicate and work with volunteers and I think we
would all agree with that. However, I don't think the successful outcome is
anything to do with the weak pound but rather a strong proposal based on a
good strategic plan, excellent partnership working and increased reach and
impact over the past year.

[Wikimediauk-l] FDC recommendations for funding

2016-11-18 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

As many of you will know, Wikimedia UK applies every year to the Wikimedia
Foundation for an Annual Plan Grant to support our charitable activities.
Proposals from the UK and other Chapters are considered by the Funds
Dissemination Committee (FDC) who make recommendations to the Foundation's
board for final approval.

Following our proposal submitted at the end of September, the FDC has
recommended that Wikimedia UK is supported with a grant of £297,500 for
2016/17, which is 96% of our total request and an increase on the amount
received for the current financial year. We are very pleased with this
recommendation, and I would like to thank all the staff, board members and
volunteers who inputted into the development of our plans for next year and
the funding proposal. The team and I look forward to working with many of
you on the delivery of our programmes next year!

You can read the FDC's assessment here:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:APG/FDC_recommendations/2016-2017_

Best wishes
Lucy

[Wikimediauk-l] Proposals for APG funding from the Wikimedia Foundation are open for community review

2016-10-14 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

As some of you may be aware, the closing date for proposals for the next
round of Annual Plan Grant funding from the Wikimedia Foundation was 1st
October. Proposals are now open for community review until the end of this
month, after which they will be assessed by support staff for the Funds
Dissemination Committee (FDC), then considered by the FDC itself, which
makes recommendations for funding to the Wikimedia Foundation Board.

The Wikimedia UK proposal for funding from February 2017 to January 2018
can be found here - please take a look!:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:APG/Proposals/2016-2017_round1/Wikimedia_UK/Proposal_form

Thanks and best wishes

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Could Wikimedia UK keep an eye on which museums are going to close and give us the heads up?

2016-10-14 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Such a shame when museums close. Staff here can certainly keep an eye out
for these kinds of closures and let you know via this mailing list - and
great if others on this list could do the same when/if you hear of imminent
closures. Cheers, Lucy

Well for the moment we're in London - the office is not likely to be moving
until December 2017/January 2018. Personally I'd love a move North - over
the border in fact - but not sure how viable that is!

[Wikimediauk-l] New post at Wikimedia UK

2016-10-12 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

As many of you know, Richard Symonds left Wikimedia UK at the end of
August. After some consideration of how to replace Richard, we have decided
to create two new roles; a part time Finance Assistant and a new *Membership,
Fundraising and Operations Assistant*, for which applications are now open.

The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator with a high
level of organisational skills and experience of providing administrative
support within a not-for-profit setting. An understanding of membership
organisations is desirable, as is experience of supporting fundraising
activities. The closing date for applications is midnight on *Monday 31st
October 2016*.

The job description and person specification for the post can be found here:

https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Membership,_Fundraising_and_Operations_Assistant

Any support in promoting this post would be much appreciated. If you are
interested yourself, but want to find out more about the role, please feel
free to send me an email and we can arrange a time to speak.

Thanks and best wishes
Lucy

[Wikimediauk-l] Saturday's planning meetings

2016-09-22 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

On Saturday, we have a meeting of the Evaluation Panel in the morning
followed by a discussion focused on education from 12noon to 3pm (with
lunch at around 1pm). We were going to hold a planning lab from 3pm,
however as we have had so few sign ups for that we are cancelling the
session. If you are interested in finding out about our proposed activities
for next year in the context of our Annual Plan Grant application to the
Wikimedia Foundation, please do sign up to the lunchtime meeting, where
there will be a more general presentation on our plans in addition to the
focus on education:

We have successfully purchased a new SSL certificate (for three years) and

sure exactly what's happened here. Will investigate but the person dealing
with this is taking a few days off for his birthday so it may take a few
days for us to get back to you/resolve any issues, sorry.

[Wikimediauk-l] Help shape Wikimedia UK's delivery plans for 2017 - 18

2016-09-14 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

Wikimedia UK will soon be applying to the Wikimedia Foundation for an
Annual Plan Grant (APG) in 2017 - 18. Longstanding volunteers, members and
other stakeholders will be familiar with this process but for those of you
who aren’t, an APG enables affiliated organisations around the world -
including country ‘chapters’ of the global Wikimedia movement, like
Wikimedia UK - to access funds raised by the Foundation through the
Wikipedia banner campaign.

The deadline for proposals is 1st October and we will need to submit our
draft delivery plan for next year as well as the proposal itself. On Saturday
24th September we will be holding a day of meetings to discuss and develop
our proposal and our delivery plans for next year alongside the wider
Wikimedia UK community. These include a meeting of the Evaluation Panel in
the morning followed by a discussion focused on education from 12 - 3pm and
a Planning Lab from 3 to 5pm.

The education meeting will give participants the opportunity to feed into
our emerging plans for education and help us to shape an education
conference in early 2017. At the Planning Lab we will share our plans for
partnerships and programmes in 2017, with a view to incorporating feedback
and ideas into our proposal to the Wikimedia Foundation, and enabling
volunteers to identify how they might get involved with Wikimedia UK over
the next year.

All meetings will take place at Development House near Old Street, London
and are open to all, but signing up in advance is essential (see below for
links). Refreshments including lunch will be provided, and support for
travel is available if Wikimedia UK is notified in advance by email to
karla.ma...@wikimedia.org.uk.

It would be great to involve as many people as possible in these
discussions so please sign up to one or both of the following sessions if
you can!

2016-08-15 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

Yes, Wikimedia UK does have to move as the building we are currently based
in has been sold by our current landlords (Ethical Property Ltd.) to new
developers (who are likely to knock it down and start again, apparently!)
We don't have a fixed date yet by which we will have to leave but the
latest update from Ethical Property suggest it will be by next September -
although if we find a suitable alternative before then we may move sooner.

Our Director of Finance and Operations, Davina Johnson, is leading on the
move and I will ask her to put together an update for this list. We will be
happy to receive your suggestions and input as we are currently in a
research phase in terms of options, although the board will make the final
decision. Davina works part time so will not be able to email you all
immediately, hence this message to let you know the situation in broad
terms.

Best

[Wikimediauk-l] AGM and trustee elections

2016-07-11 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

Many thanks to those of you who attended Saturday's meetup and AGM, and
also to everyone who voted by proxy. I thought it was a great day and the
feedback (from forms completed on the day) seems to be very positive.
Thanks again to Andy Mabbett and others for your involvement in the day,
particularly those of you who gave talks or ran training.

I'm delighted that the four trustees standing for election were all voted
onto the board! These are Greyham Dawes and Josie Fraser - both of whom are
existing trustees - and newcomers Lorna Campbell and Jordan Landes. I'm
sure they will all make a valuable addition to the board of trustees at
Wikimedia UK.

I also wanted to reiterate my congratulations to *Martin Poulter*, our
Wikimedian of the Year; *Lorna Campbell* and *Melissa Highton*, who
received our Partnership of the Year award, and *Nav Evans*, who received
an Honourable Mention. All were very well deserved.

I am on annual leave from tomorrow until Wednesday 27th July (inclusive)
and probably be won't be able to respond personally to any
comments/questions on the above over the next few weeks - so If you don't
hear from me, that's why.

Best wishes
Lucy

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] "Friendly and inclusive", and Brexit at Wikimania

2016-07-10 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Hi Deryk

Thank you for sharing such a personal response to your experiences at
Wikimania, and you raise a very valid point about different cultural
sensitivities and the possibility of feeling like an outsider IRL as well
as online. I'm so sorry you felt rejected and excluded at Wikimania. I
don't think I was involved in the specific discussion you mention but I can
certainly attest to the fact that emotions were running high that weekend
following the referendum. Your email is a useful reminder that we all have
a different perspective on issues that can seem like binary propositions.
It was great to see you at the WMUK AGM yesterday, and I really hope that
you felt welcome and included there!

All best

MozFest currently has a call for proposals for speakers/facilitators at
their conference in London this October. They have a number of strands that
I think could be interesting and relevant from an open knowledge
perspective, listed here:

https://mozillafestival.org/spaces-and-sessions

The deadline for proposals is 1st August. If you want to apply as a
volunteer for Wikimedia UK, we could potentially cover your expenses
(subject to agreement by daria.cybul...@wikimedia.org.uk). There are also
stipends available from MozFest I believe.

Thanks Stevie! We've been working closely with Dimi on this. As the
consultation deadline was Wednesday (just gone) I'm not sure what more we
can do for now but will see what emerges from the consultation...the

Yes, this is great!

The EU consultation on harmonisation ended on Wednesday. Wikimedia UK
responded, and also encouraged other individuals and organisations to do
so. I'm not sure exactly what the timescale is now though in terms of any
new policy or legislation.

[Wikimediauk-l] Speak up for open knowledge and a free internet: Freedom of Panorama Consultation

2016-06-08 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

As I know most of you will be aware, in the UK we have the legal right to
take photos of public art and buildings and share or publish them in print,
on social media, photo sharing websites, Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons.
This right, known as Freedom of Panorama, does not exist across Europe,
with restrictive laws existing in France, Sweden and a number of other
countries. The European Commission wants to harmonise the rules concerning
the sharing of these pictures across the European Union, and is consulting
on this until 15th June.

Wikimedia UK believes that the EU should replace the current inconsistent
set of laws with Europe-wide legislation allowing people to share images of
public art, buildings and skylines for all purposes. This includes
commercial use, which would enable people to share pictures on social media
and image sharing sites such as Facebook, Flickr or Instagram without being
in breach of copyright law. It would also enable images to be used for free
educational purposes on the Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia, and
reduce the time and money currently wasted on rights clearance issues, for
example in guidebooks to works of art or architecture in countries
including France, Italy, Sweden and Belgium. Please respond to the
consultation by next Wednesday 15th June, ideally using You Can Fix
Copyright's public answering guide
<http://youcan.fixcopyright.eu/limesurvey/index.php/591338?lang=en=Y>,
and ensure that the UK’s rights are preserved, whilst supporting the
extension of Freedom of Panorama across Europe. The Commission is also
consulting on Ancillary Copyright, which Wikimedia UK believes is both
unnecessary and unfair on ordinary internet users. We would encourage you
to respond to this at the same time as the Freedom of Panorama consultation.

If you use social media, we would be grateful if you could share this
message or tweet about the consultation, using the hashtag #saveFoP

Many thanks!

Lucy

[Wikimediauk-l] AGM and Meet Up on 9th July

2016-05-26 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

I'm pleased to confirm that this year's Wikimedia UK AGM and WMUK Meet Up
will be on *Saturday 9th July* at Impact Hub in Birmingham. We will be
finalising the schedule over the next few weeks but are planning to start
at 10.30am, with half an hour for tea, coffee and networking before moving
into talks, workshops and other activities. The AGM itself will be at 3pm
and is scheduled to finish by 5.30pm at the latest. We would encourage you
to come and stay for the whole day, particularly if you are a member and
can vote at the AGM, although all volunteers, editors and potential
volunteers and editors are welcome. We will circulate registration details
soon - please make sure you do register if you are planning to attend.

We will provide a light lunch and refreshments.

We have scheduled time for a series of '*lightning talks*' after lunch,
which will generally be short, five minute presentations on any subject
relating to Wikimedia, open knowledge or the open sector more broadly. If
you would like to give one of these talks, please email Richard Nevell on
richard.nev...@wikimedia.org.uk with your name and the subject you'd like
to speak about.

We are also looking for a *volunteer photographer* to lead a 'Wiki Takes
Birmingham' tour of the local area, along with Richard Symonds (as the
local area expert!) Again, please let Richard Nevell know if you would like
to do this.

Any member who wishes to bring forward a resolution for consideration at
the AGM must inform the charity, and supply a copy of the suggested text,
by no later than Friday 3rd June 2016. The suggested text may either be
sent by email to the chair of the board at michael.ma...@wikimedia.org.uk or
may be posted online at
https://wikimedia.org.uk/w/index.php?title=2016_Annual_General_Meeting/Resolutions

If you have any more general comments or queries, please email me at

With all best wishes

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Consultation on new draft strategic framework for Wikimedia UK

2016-05-11 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Hi Fae

Many thanks for the prompt feedback!

Firstly, I want to be clear that when we (or certainly when I!) talk about
'UK cultural heritage', we mean that in the broadest possible sense in
terms of what is *held* in the UK (which obviously includes knowledge,
information and assets originating in and/or relating to many different
cultures), and what is relevant to the people who *live* in the UK (again,
covering many different cultural, ethnic, linguistic backgrounds). But if
this is misleading we should certainly look at the wording.

I would argue that the objects of the charity are fairly broad, as they are
to promote and support the widest possible public access to, use of and
contribution to, Open Content of an encyclopaedic or educational nature or
of similar utility to the general public, in particular the Open Content
supported and provided by Wikimedia Foundation. Whilst the objects of
course have to be the driving force of our strategy, the purpose of the
three year framework is to identify which particular aspects of 'open
content of an encyclopaedic or educational nature' the charity will focus
on during this particular planning period. I therefore don't think that we
will be committing budget or staff time to any projects that fall outwith
the objects - and indeed, if we were planning to do so, we should certainly
look to amend the Articles as you suggest.

Thanks again, and warm regards
Lucy

[Wikimediauk-l] Consultation on new draft strategic framework for Wikimedia UK

2016-05-11 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

Over the past few months I have been leading the process of reviewing and
refreshing Wikimedia UK's strategic framework, and developing a new
business plan for 2016 - 19. The draft strategic framework sets out a new
vision for the charity and I would love to hear from volunteers, members
and other stakeholders about whether you support the proposed direction of
travel. The process so far has involved a board away day in December, a
planning session with the staff team, and a review of the draft documents
at the board meeting in March. Community consultation on the strategic
framework forms an important part of this process and will run until the
end of this month.

https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/2016_Strategy_Consultation

The planned outputs from the strategic planning process will be a clear,
concise strategic framework for the period 2016 to 2019, which outlines our
vision, mission, values, planned outcomes, strategic goals and objectives
and major programme strands, plus a three year business plan which puts the
strategy in context, articulating the external context and drivers, planned
priorities and programmes for the three year period and internal resources
including staffing and funding.

When considering the draft strategic framework, I would be particularly
keen for you to bear these questions in mind - although please don't feel
that you have to answer all (or indeed any) of them:

1. Do you agree with the overall strategic framework proposed? If not,
why/what changes would you like to suggest?
2. Is there anything missing?
3. How should WMUK prioritise activities?
4. How can we work with you on delivering the strategy?

You can respond to this consultation by *Monday 30th May 2016 *by adding
your thoughts to the talk page or by sending an email to me on
lucy.crompton-r...@wikimedia.org.uk.

With best wishes and many thanks
Lucy

[Wikimediauk-l] AGM to be held in Birmingham

2016-04-01 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

Well it's a close run thing but it looks like Birmingham is a slightly more
popular choice for the AGM on Saturday 9th July. We now need to find a
venue, which I'll confirm asap along with timings for the day.

Andy Mabbett has very kindly offered to be involved in planning and shaping
the day - if anyone else would like to volunteer, please let me know asap.

All best

[Wikimediauk-l] AGM location - please vote!

2016-03-19 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

I have previously emailed regarding this year's AGM for Wikimedia UK, which
will be taking place on Saturday 9th July. This is the point where new
board members can stand for election and where members of the charity have
the opportunity to express their views, raise ideas or discuss issues,
either in the formal context of the AGM itself or informally throughout the
day. We would also like to maximise the opportunity of having a
(hopefully!) large group of Wikimedians together, to deliver training
and/or facilitate discussion and workshops. The day is for volunteers,
editors and members and so it will be essential to involve volunteers in
thinking about and planning these activities.

Several volunteers and members have suggested that it would be good to hold
the meeting outside of London. Without having a real sense of the extent to
which location will impact on people's decision to attend, and what
people's preferences are, it's difficult to fix on a specific location; but
we do need to confirm the venue asap. I think for most people (and I
realise there will be exceptions), London or Birmingham are the best
options and are generally well-connected in terms of public transport. I
would therefore be very grateful if you could complete the doodle poll,
below, as this will give us a sense of the majority view - and also start
to give us an idea of potential numbers. I'm away on holiday next week but
plan to confirm the venue in early April.

http://doodle.com/poll/222ebe9ypqdic47t

Also, please do let me know if you'd be interested in helping to shape the
day as a volunteer!

Many thanks
Lucy

present), where Lord Puttnam - producer of Local Hero, Chariots of Fire and
Bugsy Malone, among many others - was pushing for Select Committee meetings
and other Parliamentary proceedings to be filmed and publicly available.
It's possible that he might be a good internal advocate for you?

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Collating/editing information about the benefits of open knowledge

2016-02-26 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

Thanks for all your comments and input into this. I can understand why
those working closely within the open knowledge sector might feel there
isn't a need for information about why this matters, but the audience we're
aiming this at are people working in smaller organisations and societies,
or simply interested members of the public, who need an introduction to
open. The idea would be to signpost to other, more comprehensive materials,
rather than to reinvent the wheel. And I'm not imagining this would be a
very time-consuming exercise. I think despite all the barriers and issues
raised it makes sense that this information is contained somewhere on our
website (although of course, it could be shared and re-used by anyone who
wanted it!) In the first instance we are looking for some text, so your
offer is greatly appreciated Sara! I'll get in touch with you separately
about taking this forward.

All best
Lucy

[Wikimediauk-l] Collating/editing information about the benefits of open knowledge

2016-02-23 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Hi all

WMUK would like to provide better materials aimed at the general public
which explain the benefits of open knowledge. I have already been
signposted to some existing resources (provided by other organisations) but
if you know of any really good materials on this, please let me know.

Also, if anyone would like to take on the task of writing a short, simple
guide to open knowledge from a Wikimedia perspective, please let me know!
This will go on our website but will also be a document that we can email
to people as necessary.

Thanks
Lucy

[Wikimediauk-l] Wikimedia UK AGM - Date and suggestions for location/venue

2016-01-19 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

The 2016 Annual General Meeting for Wikimedia UK will be on Saturday 9th
July. As in previous years, we also plan to combine this with an
opportunity to bring people from our community together, in particular the
charity's volunteers and members.

We are starting to think about possible venues for the day and are keen to
look at locations outside London, if we can find somewhere suitable (by
which I mean an accessible venue with good public transport links that we
can ideally have for free or at a subsidised rate!) Birmingham and
Manchester would be obvious choices as they are relatively central, but
other suggestions are welcome, particularly if you are in a position to
help with securing a venue.

Regardless of whether you have any suggestions or preferences regarding the
venue at this point, please put the date in your diaries!

Best wishes
Lucy

[Wikimediauk-l] Photos from the party...and media coverage of the 15th birthday

2016-01-19 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

Many thanks to those of you who were able to make the 15th birthday party
on Saturday, your presence was much appreciated. Photos have now gone up on
Commons, and on our Facebook page here:

https://www.facebook.com/events/975864969140790/permalink/978696188857668/

Also, I thought that some of you might be interested in the media coverage
of the 15th birthday party in the UK, and particularly that which mentioned
Wikimedia UK and featured interviews with volunteers and staff. Martin
Poulter (currently Wikimedian-in-Residence at the Bodleian Libraries) gave
interviews for both Sky News and ITV News, while Robin Owain and Jason
Evans (WMUK Wales Manager and WiR at the National Library of Wales
respectively) spoke on BBC Radio Cymru; our Head of Programmes Daria
Cybulska spoke on the BBC World Service; and I was interviewed by Paul Ross
on BBC London Radio.

There was of course a lot of coverage of Jimmy, who gave a substantial
interview to the Telegraph and was on BBC Breakfast, as well as in other
broadcast and print media. The coverage mainly felt celebratory in feel,
and included some fantastically impressive statistics about Wikipedia
globally, as well as insights into the work of the UK charity.

All best
Lucy

[Wikimediauk-l] Reminder about the PARTY tomorrow!

2016-01-15 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

This is just a quick reminder about the 15th Birthday Party for Wikipedia
that WMUK are holding tomorrow evening:

Saturday 16th January
7.30 - 10.30pm
Newspeak House
133 Bethnal Green Road
London E2 7DG

The nearest station is Shoreditch High Street, just a few minutes away, and
Liverpool Street and Bethnal Green tube stations are pretty much
equidistant - about a 10 - 15 minute walk depending on your stride!

There will be speeches from several people involved in the movement,
including Jimmy Wales, who will also cut the (rather magnificent) cake.
Wine, beer and soft drinks are provided, along with some nibbles.

I hope to see many of you there. There's still time to sign up here:

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/wikipedias-15th-birthday-
party-tickets-20509187532

Or just let us know you're coming via this mailing list.

Wikimedia UK would like to invite volunteers, editors and partners to a
drinks party from 7.30pm on *Saturday 16th January* at Newspeak House,

small, informal gathering to thank those involved in WMUK and the Wikimedia

however for now please save the date.

With many thanks to Ed Sapeira for kindly hosting us! We look forward to

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Should all open knowledge advocacy be paid positions?

2015-12-02 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear Fae

Many thanks for your email and you raise some very valid points. What I
meant in my message was that strategic responsibility for advocacy would no
longer form part of the communications role, as we are appointing this at a
lower level and will no longer have a Head of External Relations. I
certainly don't mean that I will be taking on or indeed controlling all
advocacy work, as volunteers are (as you've said) crucial in this. As I
mentioned, a working group for advocacy is being set up early next year and
this will be made up of volunteers, although I will be involved in these
meetings at least initially. Whilst this group is likely to focus on public
policy, advocacy happens at many different levels and in its widest sense
is about changing public perceptions and awareness of free and open
knowledge - in which the role of volunteers as advocates and ambassadors
is, of course, absolutely vital.

I totally agree that the staff team needs to focus on meaningful programmes
that have impact!

Best wishes
Lucy

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Should all open knowledge advocacy be paid positions?

2015-12-02 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Hi Fae

Just to clarify even further(!), the code of conduct you're referring to is
specifically for non-trustee members of Board Committees, which are
currently ARC (Audit and Risk Committee) and GovCom (Governance Committee).
Working groups (and the advocacy group will fall into this category) will
be much less formal than that and whilst I would obviously hope they would
primarily be made up of members of WMUK, I'm not actually sure whether this
would be a specific requirement. I will have to look into this and get back
to you.

Cheers
Lucy

[Wikimediauk-l] FDC recommendations for WMUK grant

2015-11-30 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

The Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC) has recommended that the Wikimedia
Foundation awards Wikimedia UK £277,300 towards our work in 2016/17. Their
comments on our proposal are here, along with the other organisations being
assessed in this round:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:APG/FDC_portal/FDC_recommendations/2015-2016_round1#Wikimedia_UK

This is around 12% less than we had requested, so we will need to look at
our plans next year in order to balance the budget, however it is still a
good result and I would like to thank Daria and the rest of the team for
all their work on the proposal this year.

Best wishes
Lucy

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Moving on

2015-11-30 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

Thanks for all your messages to Stevie, which I will forward to his
personal email address to make sure that he gets them. I'm sure they will
be much appreciated.

Andy, I totally understand your concern at the gap between Stevie's
departure and the announcement, however it was agreed with Stevie that he
would be the one to let everyone know. Plans for his replacement have been
on hold while we were awaiting the FDC's recommendations for our annual
grant from the Wikimedia Foundation; however I'm now hoping to advertise
for a new Communications Co-ordinator in the new year. This post will be at
a lower level than Stevie - mainly for financial reasons - and will have a
slightly different emphasis. The advocacy work that Stevie was managing
brilliantly will now be led by me, but will also involve staff from our
programmes team as well as an advocacy working group that is being set up.

I don't know specifically what your questions were about the restructure
and clearly that took place before I joined WMUK on 7th October, however I
can certainly try to answer these if you let me know your concerns? You're
welcome to contact me directly on lucy.crompton-r...@wikimedia.org.uk, or
via this mailing list if you'd prefer.

With best wishes
Lucy

[Wikimediauk-l] Looking for a volunteer trainer to deliver edit-athon for Disability Arts Online

2015-11-09 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Dear all

We are working with Disability Arts Online to develop better coverage of
disabled artists and the disability arts movement on Wikipedia, and are
looking for a trainer (or preferably trainers!) who would be prepared to
deliver these sessions and are available on at least one of the following
dates:

Thursday 3 December 2015
Thursday 4 February 2016
Thursday 3 March 2016

All sessions will be 11am - 4pm and are to be held at Goldsmith's
University in London.

Participants are being recruited by DAO and will all be disabled writers,
who are keen to develop their own research and editing skills as well to
improve Wikipedia coverage of disabled artists and the disability arts
movement. The idea is that it will be the same cohort of writers who
attends all three sessions but of course there may be some drop off, and
some additional participants at later sessions. As DAO has had a very high
level of interest in the sessions from their community, we are ideally
looking for two trainers for each session, but the urgent priority is to
find at least one volunteer for the session in December. There will be an
appropriate level of support from DAO including British Sign Language
interpreters, and experts on the disability arts movement, so trainers
don't need to be knowledgable about this field.

Richard Nevill is going to be working on this project so please let he and
I know if you are potentially interested/available. Volunteer expenses will
be covered.

Many thanks
Lucy

Definitely! It's a shame we missed it this year but thanks for flagging it
up Mike, would be good to be involved in future. Cheers, Lucy
