AAC sounds better than mp3 at a lower bitrate so 196 would probably be equivalent to 256 mp3s. AAC has native support in the Ipod too. Vorbis excels at 64-128 but I wouldnt want to archive my music that way. One of the devs is working on improving higher bit rates, I think its called GT3 or
