Enjoy.
Your law of nature is great for justifying continual tinkering with the
source. ;-)
I think I'll continue to favor allocating my financial resources to the
loudspeaker end of the equation though.

The very best way to improve the sound of ANY Squeezebox Touch is to use
better loudspeakers.

the competitions product and have it be an instant success.
Success requires good marketing and in the case of active
loudspeakers, you would have to change the paradigm of an entire market
of audiophiles who don't buy active designs.

Yes! The entire sentence was bad. Difficult to follow.

designs but I also understand an audiophile longing to
use a given amplifier. I have some 300Bs that are wonderful with the
right loudspeaker and I know that they alter the signal but at the end
of the day, I love how they sound.

.
The Genelec looks like a solid solution though. They wisely choose to
use it as a 3-way and the coax just effectively lowers the crossover
point that is non-coincident to 500Hz where the wavelength is long
enough to make it a non-issue.

but that is rarely how it works.
My perfect small monitor design would use a coax design where the
midrange is the waveguide for the tweeter. Genelec does this on their
upper-end product and if implemented right... should work like a charm.

may have a good loudspeaker from 20 years ago that is
respectable. Whether a marginal improvement in the design is worth a
$700 upgrade depends on your pocketbook and what you have now compared
to what you would buy, both of which could be all over the map in terms
of sound quality.

magazines and they get great reviews even though we know, beyond any
shadow of a doubt, that they would perform poorly in non-sited
evaluations. If you know what to look for... there are many more
examples of good design too.

It is one subject that is sure to create a buzz in an audiophile forum.
For research it is just good experimental procedure. You couldn't
publish anything with sited listening test.
For personal enjoyment of the hobby, pick your poison. Different
strokes for different folks.

Look at a pair of active monitors. The Genelec monitors are well
engineered. That way you are not tempted to spend more money on
cables, preamp, speaker cables etc...etc

a loudspeaker that is really very
decent. The better drivers will buy you more output, lower distortion
and sometimes some unique application flexibility but they will not
sound better unless the rest of the design is done right.
