While lake-watching through the rain and wind, I just had two Cattle Egrets fly
past my house on Crystal Beach Boulevard at Thickson's Woods. They headed west
past Thickson Point. They should be watched for at the Durham marshes.
Thickson Point is reached from the

I had a Magnificent Frigatebird fly past Thickson's Woods 20+ minutes ago going
west t,o east. Going to drive east to see if I can find it again.
Sighting was from Crystal Beach Blvd at the bottom of Thickson Rd. Exit 412 off
Hwy 401 and then 2 km south at the lake

As I was leaving the Archives of Ontario just now, while travelling south on
Keele Street I noticed a Great Egret flying west to east over Finch Avenue West
likely headed to a nightly roost (possibly G. Ross Lord Park??).
Without a doubt the latest I have seen a Great
Ontbirds subscribers,
Just after 11:00 a.m. I saw an immature Northern Gannet pass across Thickson
Bay going east. It was not doing any feeding dives at all, but was moving
strong to the east well out in the lake (more than a kilometre off my front
yard). I watched it until it was lost to

Less than an hour ago I had a flock of six American Avocets fly past my house
across Thickson Bay headed west past Thickson Point. These should perhaps be
watched for at the many Durham Region marshes to the west.
There have been heavy southeast winds over the lake all

The Hermit Warbler has not, to my knowledge, been relocated by anyone since my
last update when I had seen it this morning.
Many people have been searching, and although similar numbers of Yellow-rumped
Warblers are present today, I have had no luck this afternoon in
Ontbirds subscribers,
The Hermit Warbler is still here at Thickson's Woods. It was active at dawn at
the big cedars on the eastern side of my house, but soon flew off north through
the woods.
After not seeing it for several hours, I just saw it fifteen minutes ago at the
top end of Corbett

The male Hermit Warbler that has been present for the past two days is still
being seen in the large cedar tree on the east side of my house on Crystal
Beach Boulevard as of 6:30 p.m. and has shown no sign of going to roost yet as
a really good hatch of midges is making

The adult male Hermit Warbler is still being seen at Thickson's Woods. It was
last seen just south of the south trail of the woods a little to the southwest
of the sightings book about 10 minutes ago.

This morning at 8:49 a.m. I had an adult Black Vulture fly over me going west
to east over the parking area of the off-leash dog park at the top end of
Jeffery Street, just east of Lynde Creek and immediately northwest of Sobey's
Pond. The bird was flying along parallel

While scoping the lake for loons or grebes, I just had a Cattle Egret fly east
to west across the bay off Thickson's Woods until I watched it fly over
Thickson Point and out of sight to the west. This is the second time that I
have seen Cattle Egret here as a spring

While out front of my house unloading some boxes from my car, I just had an
adult Black Vulture with eight Turkey Vultures soaring over Thickson's Woods. I
watched them drift off to the east over the Corbett Creek Marsh.

I wanted to make a post to tell his many friends that today was long-time
Toronto birder Harry Kerr's 100th birthday.
I held off on posting this until now because when I spoke to his wife Eileen

one alcid there may sometimes be others around for patient searchers.
Yesterday afternoon Carolyn Van Goch found a very freshly dead Dovekie hauled
out on the barrier beach that separates

As of 4:00 p.m. today public access to see the Calliope Hummingbird in Goderich
has now closed. Congratulations to Linda Johnston and her amazing support team
of Deborah Johnston, David Lavigne and Liz Black-Petrie on hosting one of the
most universally positive birding

One last post to remind people that today is the FINAL day for public
visitation to see the Calliope Hummingbird in Goderich.
The bird, for its part, has maintained its perfect attendance record and is
showing well.

The Calliope Hummingbird in Goderich is still present and at roost in the
backyard as I write this. Hundreds of observers have now seen the bird,
photographed it, renewed old acquaintances among the crowds, and it has been a
very positive experience for all concerned thus

Those of you who can only get a chance to see this bird on the weekend will be
happy to know that the Calliope Hummingbird is indeed still present and
reported to be looking to be doing very well this morning in nice light with

As Cheryl has posted, the Calliope Hummingbird has survived the coldest night
of the fall so far at - 20C, and despite the feeders partially freezing
overnight even with the heaters, it is doing quite well this morning. The
feeders have been thawed out and set up again

I have received word again from multiple people that the Calliope Hummingbird
in Goderich is indeed present and producing scores of happy birders again today.

For some time now there has been a previously unidentified immature male
Calliope Hummingbird (Selasphorus calliope) coming to a feeder in Goderich.

Last night at about 7:25 p.m. I found a Eurasian Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus)
on Toronto Islands at Hanlan's Point. It was found on the grass just to the
east of the Billy Bishop Airport fence about 100 metres, near the southeast
limit of the fence. It was approximately

About 4:40 p.m. I had a juvenile white morph Gyrfalcon fly past me at Thickson
Point going due east over the lake. This late in the day one has to figure that
this bird was headed for an overnight roosting site and I watched it fly

With the passing of Douglas S. Miller at age 100, Ontario loses its birder with
the longest tenure in our province.
With his first birding in the 1920s, by the mid-1930s, 1940s and 1950s Doug's

This afternoon I had an adult Pacific Loon in winter plumage well out off
Thickson Point. Judging by the similarity of the plumage, I believe this is the
same bird that was in Thickson Bay directly in front of my house back on
November 15th (although I have not seen it

About 10 minutes ago I saw a Black Vulture slowly drifting west over the
intersection of Davenport Rd. and Walmer Rd. (immediately south of Casa Loma).
It appeared to be moving directly west.

Tonight I visited the pond at 3147 Morgans Road in Newcastle where the
Yellow-crowned Night-Heron has been present for the past 5 days.
I arrived at 8:35 p.m. and there was no sign of the bird near the pond or on
the surrounding grass or in the trees. After 20 minutes

Some lake watching off Thickson's Woods today produced a rufous morph male Ruff
migrating west past Thickson's Woods in a flock with 16 Lesser Yellowlegs and 3
Short-billed Dowitchers at 4:50 p.m. The flock was headed west out over the
lake and eventually lost to sight

At 7:15 a.m. this morning I was passing the corner of Victoria St. West and
Gordon St. in Whitby when I noticed an adult white morph Ross's Goose in among
a flock of Canada Geese on the playing fields on the south side. I pulled over
onto Gordon St. to have a good look

An update from Gerry Binsfeld who reports this morning that the male Lark
Bunting is present and singing across from 550 McGinn Rd. from the guy wires of
a radio tower.

This evening, before the rains began, I observed the male Lark Bunting on the
2nd Concession on Amherst Island between 7:10 and 7:40 p.m. The bird did sing
from the wires just east of the corner of the 2nd Concession and McGinn's Rd.

This morning, a little after 8:00 a.m., while watching for Whimbrel and Brant
flocks over the lake, I spotted an adult Arctic Tern flying past my front yard
off Crystal Beach Boulevard going east to west. It was in quite close to shore
providing an excellent view.

The three male Harlequin Ducks reported to the west of Thickson Point this
morning by Mark Kubisz were still present at 6:45 p.m. this evening. They were
a little farther west than where he described this morning. Take the Waterfront

The male Prothonotary Warbler reported earlier is delighting many birders today
and was still being seen when I left it about 15 minutes ago. It is being seen
adjacent to the Waterfront Trail in the far northeast section of the woods.
